Marines of Marine Air Support Squadron 1 welcomed a new commanding officer Nov. 7 as Lt. Col. Alfred M. Sanchez relinquished command to Lt. Col. AnDroy D. Senegar during a ceremony at the parade deck here. Senegar assumes command of MASS-1 after serving as an operations planner with 1st Marine Aircraft Wing. Senegar, a graduate of the Korean Naval Command and Staff Course, is excited to take command and build on the success of Lt. Col. Sanchez. Senegar is not only ready to lead his Marines but stand beside them as the squadron re-

fines its combat readiness, he said. Sanchez, who assumed command in May of 2012, is slated to assume duties as the executive officer of Marine Air Control Group 28. Addressing the Marines, Sanchez reflected on his tenure at MASS-1. “I feel blessed to have been surrounded by such good people,” said Sanchez. “What I have enjoyed is sharing in [the squadron’s] successes and being a part of their development and, quite honestly, they have been a part of my development as well.”

Cherry Point’s Marine Corps Community Services began renovations to the Roadhouse bar Oct. 28, hoping to give the establishment a completely new look and feel. The goal of the Roadhouse is to provide a local place where junior Marines and Sailors can relax in a comfortable environment. The Roadhouse, under used by residents of the air station over the past several years, saw its last facelift in 2008. By the end of February 2014, the facility will feature new amenities designed to cater to Cherry Point’s junior service members, according to Mike Largent, MCCS chief executive officer. “It looked like a place for 50-year-olds,” said Largent. “Over the past five years or so, this facility has started looking quite worn.” The renovations will come in two phases, with final improvements completed early next year, according to Largent. Workers at the Roadhouse hope the improvements will help draw a larger crowd. Planned additions include new high-definition televisions, new furniture and an improved sound system. The Roadhouse will look and feel brand new, according to Alishia Zuniga, a bartender at the Roadhouse. “We were outdated,” said Zuniga. “It really could use a good sprucing up, and from how it’s going, it’ll look great once it’s finished.” Zuniga, who has been working behind the bar for the past two and a half years, hopes to see Marines frequent in the Roadhouse after See ROADHOUSE page A7

ECU honor students tour unmanned aerial systems, rescue squadron unteers who wanted a first-hand look at the military. “I felt honored that the Marines took time out of their day to show us around,” said Emily Brooks, a junior year nursing student. “It’s been a great thing to see.” The first stop on the tour was VMU-2, where the students got a close-up look at the RQ-7B Shadow and additional equipment involved in its employment. “The main reason I came was because we were going to see some UAVs,” said Matt Earley, an engineering student in his freshman year at the school. “They explained everything about them perfectly and it was pretty cool. I absolutely loved it.” Brandon Watson, a junior studying mechanical engineering, received a glimpse into his potential future when he sat in the pilot’s

Eleven East Carolina University honor students toured Cherry Point Nov. 1 as part of a program offered by the university. The students visited Marine Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Squadron 2 and Marine Transport Squadron 1 where they were able to view unmanned aerial vehicles and see inside VMR-1’s HH-46E Sea Knight rescue helicopter, dubbed “Pedro.” “We’ve never done a trip like this involving the military before,” said Kindal Shores, a faculty member with the university. “The students were really showing an interest in the military so we arranged this trip and made it happen.” ECU offers a program for their honor students that provides an opportunity to explore and learn outside of the classroom. Members of Marine Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron 4 conducted aerial refueling training with their EA-6B Prowlers here Nov. 7. The squadron supports Marine Air-Ground Task Force commanders by conducting airborne electronic warfare capabilities in an operational environment. Maj. Ruben Marin, an electronics countermeasure officer with VMAQ-4, says the training will enhance the squadron’s combat readiness. “The training provided pilots and crew members from VMAQ-4 the opportunity to practice one of their many mission sets which make us more proficient and combat ready,” said Marin. Marin acted as an exercise “right-seater” during the refueling, navigating his aircraft and maintaining communications between individual pilots. Scout sniper awarded Navy Cross The Honorable Ray Mabus, Secretary of the Navy, awarded the Navy Cross to Sgt. Joshua L. Moore at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune Nov. 1. Moore received the Naval service’s highest award for his extraordinary heroism while serving as a scout with 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 1, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, March 14, 2011. While in a hide-site, all of the shooter-observer teams with Moore’s section were compromised and had to return to a nearby compound they previously occupied. The section came under attack again after only a few hours. During the attack, Moore encountered two grenades, which he quickly threw back over a wall. Taking heavy machine gun fire, Moore then left the compound to aid the wounded and provide security before rescue arrived.

Corps tests new patrolling system Top Marine commanders have been worried about the amount of weight each of their troops carries for years, now the Marine Corps is looking at ways to reduce the water and battery weight carried by testing a concept called Marine Austere Patrolling System. At a base in California this month, Marine and Navy researchers are testing a system with a built-in solar panel and a water filtration system. The solar panel charges and recharges a central battery whenever the sun is out. Then, when the Marine needs power, even at night, the battery provides it. The solar panel weighs only 13 pounds and can be used repeatedly.

Chaplain’s Corner A holiday tree or Christmas tree? LT. CMDR. DAVID SLATER DEPUTY WING CHAPLAIN

The holiday season is again upon us and most of us are already salivating over the thought of the Thanksgiving meal we are about to enjoy. Turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie, even as I sit here and write this I can’t wait to give thanks to God and dig into the feast. But Thanksgiving will be over before you know it as Christmas decorations and “Black Friday” Christmas shopping signal the beginning of the Christmas season. As Christmas approaches, I have no doubt we will see another round of stories in the news stirring up controversy over whether to call the tree a “Christmas tree” or a “holiday tree.” The opponents of Christianity will no doubt play the “separation of church and state” card to try and turn people away from recognizing Christmas as the distinctly Christian holy day it is and has always been.

What is with these people who hide behind the phrase “separation of church and state,” to vilify Christianity as if it’s the noble, constitutional and patriotic thing to do? The words “separation of church and state” do not even appear anywhere in the Constitution. Did you know that? Here’s what the first amendment of the Constitution really says, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” The word “law” is the key. The Constitution forbids making any law to establish a national religion or any law that forbids the free exercise of religion. Erecting a Christmas tree on government property has no force of law to make Christianity a national religion. However, making that tree illegal does have the force of law to prohibit the free exercise of Christianity. Our Founding Fathers did place a “wall of separation See CHAPLAIN page A7

November marks Native American Heritage Month LANCE CPL. VICTOR A. ARRIAGA MCAS CHERRY POINT

November marks Native American Heritage Month, a time to recognize the history and contributions Native Americans and Alaska Natives make to the nation. Native Americans make up a small portion of our nation’s armed forces today totaling roughly 22,000 American Indian and Alaska Native active duty personnel, according to a 2012 Pentagon estimate. “It is important to acknowledge the contributions of American Indian and the Alaskan Native communities,” said Staff Sgt. Laura E. Johnson, equal opportunity representative with Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron. “They have made a great impact in not only the Marine Corps but the U.S. military as a whole.” This year’s Native American Heritage Month theme is “guiding our destiny with heritage and traditions.” The Society of American Indian Government Employees, a nonprofit organization representing American Indian and Alaska Natives, as well as federal, tribal, state and local government employees, selected the theme. Native American Heritage Month, which began as a day of recognition for Native Americans in 1915, is now an annual recognition.

“For over 200 years they have fought with courage,” said Johnson. “They participated in the War of 1812 and the Civil War.” Native Americans and Alaska Natives played a role in each major U.S. conflict of the 20th Century and beyond. In an interview with American Forces Press Service, Joe Sarcinella, the Department of Defense’s senior advisor and liaison for Native American Affairs, said that the department is more than happy to celebrate Native American contributions to the military. “The [Department of Defense] is really committed to celebrating all sorts of diversity,” said Sarcinella. “I really feel that [diverse groups are] leading the charge, and November just happens to be that time of the year when we can focus on Native Americans.” Observing and recognizing the contributions of different cultures throughout the year also helps service members understand the impact different cultures and groups have on the capabilities of each military branch. “By observing these different races and cultures it gives Marines and Sailors a chance to see and understand the different cultures we have in our service,” said Johnson.

Throngs of spectators gathered to show their appreciation for veterans and active duty military Saturday during the annual Carteret County Veterans Day Parade in Morehead City. Maj. Gen. Robert F. Hedelund, commanding general of the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, was the parade’s grand marshal. Hedelund, who assumed command of 2nd MAW in May, feels all Marines owe a debt of gratitude to those who have served our country throughout the years. “It’s simply an opportunity for us to celebrate, honor

and recognize all veterans and their sacrifice — especially those who gave the last full measure of devotion,” said Hedelund. “All of us in uniform must honorably represent those who have gone before us. If I am able to do that through participating in this event, then it is in fact a sacred privilege for me to do so.” Serving as the grand marshal for the first time this year, Hedelund is honored to follow in the footsteps of those who came before him. “By participating in this grand event, we give a little back to the veterans, their families and their communities,” said Helelund. “Veterans Day and our Corps’ birth-

day are times to reflect on the sacrifices born by all veterans – especially veteran Marines.” In its 19th year, the parade and its participants honored all veterans of Carteret County. Ret. Maj. Gen. Michael P. Sullivan, former commanding general of 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, has participated the last 11 years. “Every year it just keeps getting better and better,” said Sullivan. “The length of the parade was a sight to see this year; It just keeps growing. Soon it will no doubt be the biggest and most enjoyable parade this state can offer.”

OKINAWA, Japan — At the request of the government of the Philippines, Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel has directed U.S. Pacific Command to support U.S. government humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations in the Philippines in the wake of Typhoon Haiyan. Approximately 90 U.S. Marines and Sailors from 3rd Marine Expeditionary Brigade and two KC-130J Hercu-

les aircraft from 1st Marine Aircraft Wing departed Marine Corps Air Station Futenma Nov. 10 en route to the Philippines, according to Col. John M. Peck, chief of staff, 3rd MEB. A forward command element and humanitarian assistance survey team, led by Brig. Gen. Paul Kennedy, the deputy commander of III Marine Expeditionary Force and the commanding general of the 3rd MEB, are deploying to the Philippines from Okinawa to provide an initial assess-

ment of the support required. The initial focus of U.S. relief efforts includes surface and airborne maritime search and rescue, medium-heavy helicopter lift support and fixed-wing lift support. This includes requests for the Marine Corps’ KC-130J cargo aircraft and MV-22B Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft. The Osprey provides a unique capability and is ideal in this type of operation. With its vertical take-off and landing capabilities, it can operate in austere environments. Its ability to convert quickly to fixed-wing configuration gives it greater speed and range than traditional rotary wing aircraft. Typhoon Haiyan has impacted more than 4.2 million people across 36 provinces in the Philippines, according to the Philippine government’s national disaster risk reduction and management council. Philippine officials will have a better idea of the damage and death toll in the coming days as transportation and communications systems are repaired. Since 1990, the U.S. Government has responded to more than 40 disasters in the Philippines at the request of that country’s government, including volcanic eruptions, drought, and population displacement. Cherry Point is home to three different flight simulators – the AV-8B Harrier flight simulator, the EA-6B Prowler flight simulator and the KC-130J Hercules flight simulator. In-service engineers maintain the Aviation Training Systems and install modifications to the devices to improve the realism of the training and keep the devices current with today’s aircraft technology. The availability of accurate, realistic training increases naval aviators’ proficiency and readiness.

Federal employees help aviators stay mission ready LANCE CPL. UNIQUE B. ROBERTS MCAS CHERRY POINT

Maurice McDonald, the lead engineer for the Harrier flight simulators, stands with Cherry Point’s Aviation Training System Nov. 7

Civilian employees at Cherry Point’s Marine Corps Aviation Training System play an integral role in maintaining 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing’s combat readiness. The engineers and technicians work to maintain Aviation Training Systems and the individual devices that make up parts of the system. The employees are skilled with installing modifications to the devices to improve the realism of the training and to keep the devices current with today’s aircraft technology. The engineers are a part of the In-Service Engineering Office, which is a part of the Field Division of Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Division Command. The ISEO personnel provide on-site engineering support for training systems. Maurice McDonald, an in-service engineer for AV-8B Harrier flight simulators, assists pilots who train on the simulators by updating the software and hardware pilots use to keep their skills sharp. During training McDonald and his team are able to make near-instantaneous changes to simulators’ programming, presenting pilots with challenges they did not plan for. Sometimes by request, pilots are given separate and unique situations in the simulator that help sharpen combat readiness, McDonald said. Through recent advancements in technology, pilots are now transitioning from a stand-alone training system to an integrated training environment. Simulators in separate locations can now link data, allowing Marines

to train together on the same scenario though they may be geographically separated by thousands of miles. “This [new] technology allows Marines at Cherry Point to fly with Marines in Yuma in a virtual reality,” said McDonald. “It’s virtual because it’s here on a computer system but it could very much be a mission where the two have to fly together in a real-world operation.” The simulators provide Marines with numerous training scenarios and can be used 12 to 14 hours a day, five or more days a week to help pilots train and refine their combat efficiency. The simulators provide the Marine Corps a low-cost alternative to actual flight operations while presenting pilots with the closest version of reality available. Johnny Truett, the lead engineer at Cherry Point, started as an in-service engineer supporting the KC-130 flight trainers in 1986. Now in charge of all engineers east of the Mississippi, Truett has been around to see the technological development of the systems and the advantage they provide pilots at Cherry Point. “I’ve seen amazing advances in technology that have enabled us to greatly expand the types of training we can accomplish in the flight simulators,” said Truett. The amount of space, energy, and manpower required to operate and maintain a simulator have all decreased over the past several years, according to Truett. “The simulators today consume significantly less space and power, and the fidelity of the simulation, especially the simulated visual imagery, has improved tremendously.”

Pilots stationed at Cherry Point use the Instructor Operator Station to control scenarios for those training in flight simulators. The control station allows simulation of a variety of conditions pilots may face in real-world scenarios.

Final landing marks end for aviation icon CPL. KYLE N. RUNNELS 26TH MARINE EXPEDITIONARY UNIT

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. – A UH-1N Huey landing aboard Camp Lejeune, N.C., is not unfamiliar for the area, but the one that landed on Nov. 5 marked the end of an era for the iconic aircraft. Senior leadership of the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit ended their 2013 deployment in the 5th Fleet and 6th Fleet areas of responsibility by flying into Camp Lejeune on the last Marine Corps UH-1N to deploy, completing the transition to the new UH-1Y Venom. Assigned to Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 266 (Reinforced), attached to the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit, the older model of aircraft has been deployed the last eight months supporting crisis response and theater security cooperation missions in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. The Huey is a multi-role utility helicopter, comfortably meeting requirements to accomplish all six functions of Marine Corps aviation, from assault and close air support to casualty evacuations and aerial reconnaissance. Its flexibility makes it a perfect fit for the Marine Corps – a multimission airframe capable of operating across the spectrum of modern military operations. Fittingly, the last flight for the UH-1N was also conducted by one of the oldest aircraft of that model.

“Aircraft 30 was built in August 1970,” said Capt. Andrew Kingsbury, UH-1N Huey pilot assigned to VMM-266, referring to his helicopter. “There were one or two that were older, but they were stricken from the record about 15 years ago. This aircraft has seen every major conflict the Marine Corps has been involved in since the 1970s.” Manufactured by Bell Helicopter, the UH-1 Huey was first introduced to the Marine Corps in the late 1960s and early 1970s. A quick, versatile aircraft, it rapidly became a symbol for the Vietnam War, an iconic image of that conflict. According to www.bellhelicopter.com, the Huey has received a number of upgrades converting the UH-1Y. “The Yankee provides an upgraded engine, an upgraded transmission and an upgraded avionics suite, so it really brings us into the 21st century of flying and fighting aircraft,” said Kingsbury, a six-year Huey pilot. “Where we could before only lift four to five guys, we can now be equipped to conduct any mission and still lift 12 Marines.” To prevent wasted assets, the Marine Corps will give the retired aircraft to different sources that can make use of the older style helicopter. “More than likely, when we get back to Cherry Point, the helicopters will be towed to Tucson, Ariz., where

The 26th MEU finished their eight month deployment to the U.S. 5th Fleet and 6th Fleet areas of responsibility aboard the Kearsarge Amphibious Ready Group, serving as a sea-based, expeditionary crisis response force capable of conducting amphibious operations across the full range of military operations.

they will be stripped of anything Marine Corps or anything the federal government isn’t selling to the next customer,” said Kingsbury. “The United States Air Force still uses the [UH-1] November, so we will send them their way, and they will get

repainted and will be accepted by the Air Force as their aircraft.” He said the aircraft still have a little fight left in them and will continue to be flown around Cherry Point for approximately a month as the pilots all look toward the future and the Venom.

the fleet,” said Maj. Andrew Paynter, aircraft maintenance officer, Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron One. WTI involves more than 200 instructors, 91 aircraft and more than 3,000 personnel, including a small number of troops from Britain, Australia and Canada. The school utilizes all aspects of aviation and includes every type of aircraft used by the Marine Corps. “This is a higher level of learning,” said Paynter. “The [operational] tempo is three times higher than a normal squadron; the [number] of aircraft is much higher than a normal squadron would ever see. This is the most action any squadron will see outside of combat.” This course is broken into two parts. First, students spend three and a half weeks in the classroom receiving instruction on

Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 452, Marine Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Squadron 4, Marine Air Support Squadron 6, MAG-49, Marine Air Control Group 48 and MAG 41, Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 41 and 49, provided vital equipment and support from aerial refueling, flight line ground support, aircraft maintenance and aircraft to the exercise. “The Reserve force is integrated into every major evolution at WTI,” said Peterson. According to Master Gunnery Sgt. William Lloyd, maintenance chief with WTI, the benefits of this training are mutual between the participants and the support, specifically for the Reserve. “The training is very good for those who participate in better preparing them for combat operations from a front line and rear support perspective, said Lloyd. The Reserve has the opportunity to get that added flight time and utilize some new equipment Peterson agreed on the mutual benefit of the training; however, he saw it from a more intangible viewpoint. “We are a unique Reserve entity. Because of that, we have a number of very experienced guys who can bring a lot to the table on all levels, specifically teaching younger, learning pilots,” he said. “But, also by participating, we are always learning from each other. Every time we come, we learn something new, which better prepares us to teach our units in the future.” As the seven-week marker passes, another evolution of WTI comes to an end. When the aircraft land, the missions are completed and the dust settles, a force of more than 3,000 active and Reserve Marines return to their home stations better, stronger and more capable to act as a combined force to complete any mission set before them and teach their Marines to do the same.

their respective military occupational specialties, basic weapon systems and tactics. After the classes, the action begins as the students embark on a rigorous three-anda-half-week flight curriculum designed to build their Marine Air-Ground Task Force support skills by subjecting them to a variety of simulated real-world missions, such as transporting troops, providing close-air support, evacuating non-combatants and various combat action operations. “It’s an all-out brawl,” said Maj. Robert Peterson, operations officer, Marine Fighter Training Squadron 401. “This training integrates both components, active and Reserve, to effectively execute all MAGTF capabilities.” VMFT-401 is a Reserve fighter squadron known as the “Snipers.” The squadron’s mission is to provide instruction to active and Reserve fleet Marine forces and fleet squadrons through dissimilar air combat training. The majority of VMFT-401’s workload is their work-up and participation in WTI. They provide adversary work in offensive anti-air warfare and anti-air warfare exercises or “Red Air” support during each training cycle. They are the only adversary squadron in the Marine Corps. “We replicate tactics and pilots of threat countries. We start with the basics and then move to larger operations. We start with [fewer] aircraft and then we move to more and more intense operations,” said Peterson. “We even surprise them during their set missions.” In addition to direct aerial support and participation in the exercise, the Reserve played a key role in the logistical support of the training as well. “The Reserve provides an extreme impact on the training: providing aircraft, active refueling, maintenance and administration,” said Maj. Clint Weber, operations officer, Marine Aircraft Group 41. More than 160 Marines from multiple Reserve squadrons such as VMFT-401,

seat of an HH-46E for the first time. “I signed up for this trip because I am looking into joining the Navy,” said Watson. “I saw some corpsmen at VMR-1 and thought it was really cool because this could potentially be a part of my life in the future.” The students had a great time and they are looking forward to participating in similar events in the future, said Shores. “When we first got here it was a bit intimidating but the Marines really broke the ice and made us feel welcome,” said Shores. “Now that we understand how this kind of thing works, we are definitely planning on doing something like this in the future.”

the improvements are completed. “The place is going to be completely modernized and have plenty space for everyone to enjoy themselves,” she said. With all the new furniture, new 1080p high-definition screens, and a heart-pounding new sound system, the atmosphere will reflect more of a night club feel, according to Largent. “The place is going to look and feel great,” said Largent. “And I say ‘feel’ because you’ll know this place is meant for you the second you step through the door and the music pounds you in the chest.”

between church and state,” but it was a wall meant only to keep the government from trying to run the church; it was never meant to keep Christian principles out of government. Don’t fall for this ridiculous ruse. Speak up and rebuke those who seek to twist the facts and deceive people into believing their lies. There is nothing unconstitutional about erecting a Christmas tree on public grounds and calling it exactly what it is. It’s not a “holiday tree,” it’s a “Christmas tree.” As you bow to give thanks before your Thanksgiving meal, remember to also thank God for inspiring our founding fathers to protect our freedom of religion and recognize the need for the influence of his holy word and prayer upon our government. With all the turmoil in Washington, D.C., we need God’s help more than ever.

based on the amount of fuel passed between aircraft, Marin said. “The actual refueling process time varies depending on how much fuel is being requested in the exercise,” said Marin. “Today we linked up twice taking 2,000 pounds the first time and 4,000 the second.” During a normal refueling exercise, pilots vary their roles and assignments. Swapping roles gives all Prowler pilots and navigators hands-on experience and enhanced mission capability, according to Maj. Bart E. Macmanus, electronics countermeasure officer, VMAQ-4. “The point of the swap was to get the most out of the training as possible,” said Macmanus. “The different seats have different codes to practice for assisting in the navigation and communication of the pilot, and to make the pilot himself better in airmanship.” During a refueling exercise or mission, a Prowler pilot follows behind a refueling aircraft, communicating with the refueling pilot, to make midflight refueling possible, according to Macmanus. Through a series of maneuvers, both pilots guide their aircraft into position before connecting through a hose stretched between aircraft, Macmanus added. “It’s like anything else you do, the more practice you have, the easier it becomes,” said Macmanus. “The last thing you want to happen is to be over a combat zone and not be able to plug into a tanker.”

Hancock Yacht Club renovated, prepared for future

PHOTOS BY LANCE CPL. UNIQUE B. ROBERTS

Ted Goetz speaks about the history of the clubhouse during a re-opening ceremony at Cherry Point’s Hancock Yacht Club Nov. 7. Goetz, an active member of the Yacht Club since its founding in 1956, recalled the growth and continued improvements to the clubhouse over the years and hopes it will continue to serve members who call Cherry Point and surrounding communities home.

LANCE CPL. UNIQUE B. ROBERTS MCAS CHERRY POINT

Members of Cherry Point’s Hancock Yacht Club met to re-launch and re-dedicate the organization’s clubhouse Nov. 7, after nearly 50 years of continuous use. Over the years, due to normal use and exposure to the elements, the clubhouse has endured some wear and tear. The organization completed renovations to the clubhouse Thursday in an effort to keep the building functional for group meetings. The Hancock Yacht Club brings together Cherry Point boating enthusiasts, promoting boating knowledge and safety while promoting activities on the sea. Newton Collyar, the commodore of the Hancock Yacht Club, leads the volunteer force within the organization. Collyar, along with members of the yacht club and other Cherry Point residents, spent more than five years renovating the clubhouse. The members began renovations by removing carpet and moving the bar to the opposite end of the building several years ago, said Collyar. “Members sanded the floors and applied sealer and now we have beautiful hardwood floors.” Volunteers contributed countless hours of work to restore the old building, from restroom improvements and rewiring to repairs of damaged paneling and structure repair, he said. Collyar, who began his fifth nonconsecutive term as the Club’s commodore Oct. 5, saw the beginning of the renova-

tion and has stuck around to see the finished product. “Everyone came together and worked to make something that was nearly unusable into a fully functional [facility], and it shows in the final product,” said Collyar. “We’ve extended the life expectancy for the building, hopefully, for another 15 years”. Founded in 1956, the Hancock Yacht Club is the oldest club on Cherry Point. Ted Goetz, an active member since its founding and the club’s historian, recalled the growth of the club since its founding. Goetz remembers when the original building was occupied in 1942. At the time there were only squadrons on the base but no airplanes. He said the clubhouse was a recreational building in the 1920’s. With the renovation of the clubhouse, members hope to bring in new members from Cherry Point community to share their boating enthusiasm. The facelift provides the organization with time to grow and branch out to more residents of Cherry Point, according to Goetz. Today’s members and those who have served in the past are dedicated and committed elders who have watched the Hancock Yacht Club bloom into what it is today, said Collyar. With the renovations complete, the club is looking forward to adding more members and increasing the awareness of boating knowledge and safety within the community.

Ted Goetz delivers a speech about the history of the Yacht Clubhouse during a reopening ceremony, Nov. 7.

Members of the Hancock Yacht Club listen to Newton Collyar’s brief during a re-opening ceremony, Nov. 7. Collyar is the commodore of the yacht club, overseeing club membership and informing members of upcoming events. The yacht club promotes boating knowledge and safety to the Cherry Point residents and boating community. During the meeting, Collyar spoke about the completion of the clubs renovations and upcoming goals for the club.

G. WAYNE CYRUS HAVELOCK CHIEF OF POLICE

The holiday season is quickly approaching. Across the country law enforcement agencies may see an increase in the number of reported break-ins and theft related cases. The Havelock Police Department would like to remind everyone of some basic safety tips for the holiday season though these basic safety tips can also be applied year round. Crime can occur because of opportunity. Please help us reduce the amount of opportunity criminals have to commit crimes in the following ways: 1. Lock and secure all windows and doors in your home or business and vehicle(s). Do not leave valuables in your car. Ensure all firearms, electronics, gifts, purses and wallets, phones, laptops, etc., are taken inside or locked out of view. 2. When shopping in a store and pushing a shopping cart, do not walk away from the cart leaving your valuables unattended. Be mindful of your personal belongings and zip your purse closed at all times. If possible, secure it to the cart. 3. If you purchase electronics or firearms, please record the make, model and serial number or take pictures of the serial number and secure those numbers or photographs in a safe place. Should you become the victim of a crime these numbers or photographs can assist law enforcement

in identifying your property. 4. If it sounds too good to be true, it likely is. Be cautious of any correspondence (text message, email, letter, or phone call) claiming you have won a lottery or any monetary or item prize that requires you to send money prior to receiving your prize. One hundred percent of these are fraud. If you have any concerns about this type of correspondence, contact a family member for advice, research it on the internet, or contact your local law enforcement agency. 5. If you live within the city limits of Havelock and you plan on leaving town for vacation, please contact us about completing a residential check form. This form, once filled out, informs us you are leaving and a police officer will stop by your residence at various times to check that all doors and windows are secure while you are gone. Please contact Havelock PD at 447-3212 for more details. If you live on the Air Station, be aware that the Provost Marshal’s Office conducts roving patrols of base housing though there is no individual residential check process. If you need to report suspicious activity on the air station, please call PMO at (252) 466-5123. If you have any information about any type of crime that has already occurred off base, contact your local law enforcement agency or the Craven County Crime Stoppers tip line at (252) 633-5141.
