Marines with 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing returned home to Cherry Point Saturday and Sunday after an eightmonth deployment with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit. The Marines were attached to Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 266 (Reinforced) for the duration of the deployment. The Marines and Sailors began their pre-deployment training in the summer of 2012 to prepare for the many exercises they would participate in during the deployment. In March the Marines left their fami-

lies and friends and sailed east. The 26th MEU took part in Exercises Agile Spirit in the Republic of Georgia, Eagle Resolve in Qatar, Eager Lion in Jordan, Sea Soldier in Oman, and Eager Falcon in Kuwait. “The Marines did an absolutely stellar job,” said Faught. “They performed every task with passion and amazed me daily.” Over the weekend, families of the returning Marines waited patiently at the squadron’s hangar in anticipation for their arrival home. “We’re ready to do whatever he wants to do,” said Mary Baker, the grandmother of Lance Cpl. Chase

Baker. “His wife, sister, mother and grandfather are here to welcome him home.” The Marines who returned with Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 467 gave waiting family and friends a show, conducting a fly-by with AH1W Super Cobras before landing and marching back to their loved ones. “The hardest part is going to be coming back and getting adjusted to civilians and garrison life again,” said Baker, an aviation mechanic with VMM-266 (Rein.) who returned to Marine Attack Squadron 231. “I’m glad they give us some time to decompress. A lot of the guys could really use it.”

Members of Marine Attack Training Squadron 203 conducted aerial refueling flights with Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 252 Nov. 1. VMAT-203 is responsible for training new AV-8B Harrier pilots. The Harrier, one of the Marine Corps’ primary expeditionary aircraft, is capable of having an external reservoir of fuel. With such properties, having the ability to conduct air-toair refueling increases the aircraft’s range and versatility. After attending 48 weeks of flight school new Harrier pilots are assigned to VMAT-203 for additional training, including aerial refueling. The training consists of classes covering fundamentals, safety precautions and use of safety equipment. “Every time you get to do something new, it’s pretty cool. The training provides us with another opportunity to do something different,” said 1st Lt. Tristan A. Wickersham, a replacement pilot with VMAT-203. Upon successfully completing the required classes, the pilots headed out to the flight line to get hands-on training. The pilots geared up with anti-gravity suits and survival vests and linked up with a KC130J Hercules to begin the refueling process. In the air, the KC-130J pilots with VMGR252 extend a flexible hose that trails from the tanker to the receiving aircraft. Maintaining constant communication, the Harrier pilots move into position to begin the refueling process. See REFUEL page A3

Members of Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 366 conducted aerial refueling training with a CH-53E Super Stallion off the coast of Atlantic Beach Oct. 31. HMH-366 provides transport for combat troops, supplies and equipment during expeditionary, joint or combined operations. “[Aerial refueling] extends our combat range so we don’t have to stop on the ground,” said Capt. Eric B. Phil-

lips, the instructor for the training. Phillips took a new pilot, Capt. Robert S. Zetelski, with him to teach him how to properly conduct an aerial refuel. During the training the team received more than 10,000 pounds of fuel in less than six hours. “Since it was my first time, the first time I connected was the best part of the mission,” said Zetelski. To properly conduct the aerial refuel, the pilot had to follow behind a KC-130J Hercules from Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 252. Zetelski, through pre-

cise maneuvering, connected the helicopter to a hose extending from the back of the Hercules. “The hardest part is staying in a position to get the gas,” said Zetelski. “You have to be able to maintain that particular position in order to continue to get gas, and if you fall out of place, it starts all over again.” Philips said it is vital to stay relaxed throughout training. The techniques will become muscle memory, he said.

New emergency notification system A new emergency mass notification system activated Wednesday sending test alerts to all personnel on the air station who have “usmc.mil” email addresses as part of a Corps-wide program to improve emergency communications on Marine Corps installations. The AtHoc Emergency Mass Notification System was loaded to Cherry Point based computers on Oct. 3. Anyone here, including air station and tenant organizations with a “usmc.mil” account in the Global Address System will receive computer pop-up alerts during qualified emergencies that could affect Cherry Point-based personnel. Plans are in place to add other addresses to the alert system, such as “navy.mil” and those for other tenant organizations. Additionally, notifications may be sent via work telephone, work email, text message, cell phone and personal email. Based on this capability, end-users have the ability to receive critical emergency notifications or instructions anywhere at any time.

Hard alcohol out of troop store Liquor was removed from the troop store located in building 293 on E St. here Friday as part of a drive to encourage healthy lifestyles for Marines and their families. The removal also reinforces current alcohol sale limitations and alcohol abuse prevention policies contained in Marine Corps Order 1700. Additionally, alcoholic beverages will only be sold from 8 a.m.–10 p.m. in all Marine Corps Exchange facilities. The changes were announced in a white letter released Aug. 26 and will be incorporated in the next revision of Marine Corps order 1700.

COMMANDANT OF THE MARINE CORPS

“For 238 years, the United States Marine Corps has proudly served our great nation with unfailing valor - bolstered by the enduring fortitude of our fellow Marines, our families, and our friends. This is why each year on November 10th, Marines from all generations gather together, in groups large and small, to celebrate the birthday of our Corps and to reflect on the proud legacy and warrior ethos we share. This is what unites us as Marines. From our first battle at new providence to today in Afghanistan, Marines have always shown that they were made of tougher stuff - that when the enemy’s fire poured in from all angles, and the situation was grim, Marines unequivocally knew that their fellow Marines would stay behind their guns, fight courageously, and drive the enemy from the battlefield. We have always known hardship, fatigue, and pain ... But we have never known what it is to lose a battle! “Marines of generations past built our reputation as the most disciplined and honorable warriors to ever set foot on a battlefield, and we have triumphed in every battle because our Corps has always focused on iron discipline and combat excellence. This is who we are...this is what we do! It matters not whether you carried an M-1, an M14, or M-16. It matters not whether you fought on a lonely island in the pacific, assaulted a citadel in the jungle, or marched up to Baghdad. It matters not whether you are a grunt, a pilot or a loggie. What matters is that, when the chips were down and things got tough, your fellow Marines could count on you to stand and fight ... And fight you did! “This year, we celebrate the anniversary of several epic battles in our celebrated history: the 70th anniversary of the 2nd Marine division landing on Tarawa, the 45th anniversary of the battle of Hue City, and the 10th anniversary of the “march up” to Baghdad. Marines who fought in these legendary battles each made their mark upon the history of our Corps. They have passed a rich and illustrious legacy on to us - a much heralded reputation. It is ours to jealously guard, and it is up to us to make our own marks and thus proudly pass it on to the generations of Marines who will follow. “Sgt. Maj. Micheal Barrett joins me in congratulating each of you. Because of you, your selfless service, and your many sacrifices, our Corps remains strong and ready to respond to any crisis. Throughout history, Marines have faced tough times and there will be tough times ahead, but there is no challenge we cannot overcome if we remain honorable and always faithful to our nation, our constitution and each other. Happy birthday Marines and Semper Fidelis.”

The origins of Halloween LT. CMDR. DAVID SLATER DEPUTY WING CHAPLAIN

By the time you read this, Halloween will be over, and we’ll be well on our way to Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. According to http://www.facts.andomhistory.com, Halloween is the second highest grossing commercial holiday after Christmas. I’m sure dentists everywhere have mixed emotions about this little factoid, due to the amount of tooth-decay that is initiated as a result of this time of the year. So as we enter this holiday season, I thought I would take a look at the origins of the somewhat enigmatic holiday known as Halloween. Ireland is typically believed to be the birthplace of Halloween. Some records indicate that the observance began in Irish Celtic traditions that date back over 2,000 years. In the years pre-dating Christianity’s arrival in Ireland, Roman rule dominated the region from 43 to 410 A.D. The observances on Oct. 31 were influenced by the ancient Roman festival known as “Pomona,” which celebrated the harvest goddess of the same name. Many Halloween customs and games that feature apples and nuts are thought to have originated from this time. For that reason, in the past, Halloween has been called San-Apple Night and Nutcrack Night. Other names by which Halloween has been known are: All Hallows’ Eve, Witches Night, Lambswool, Samhain and Summer’s End. It is believed that trick-or-treating evolved from the ancient Celtic tradi-

tion of putting out treats and food to placate spirits who roamed the streets at Samhain, which was a sacred festival that marked the end of the Celtic calendar year for the ancient Irish religious sect known as the Druids. Christianity came to Ireland in the 5th century, when St. Patrick introduced it in the year 432 A.D. In the Christian context, Halloween is short for Hallows’ Eve or Hallows’ Evening, which was the evening before All Hallows’ (sanctified or holy) Day or Hallowmas which occurred on Nov. 1. In an effort to convert nonChristians, particularly those who practiced the beliefs and rituals of ancient “nature-centered” religions like the Druids and Wiccans, the Christian church decided that Hallowmas or All Saints’ Day (Nov. 1) and All Souls’ Day (November 2nd) should be observed on those days in an effort to assimilate sacred pagan holidays that fell on or around Oct. 31. All Saints’ Day is a day when Christians of various denominations (not only Roman Catholic), pray for the souls of the dead who died as confessing Christians. All Souls’ Day is a day when the people of the Church pray for the souls of all who have departed this life, that God will have mercy on them and allow them to enjoy the benefits of heaven. Whichever observance you and your family prefer, I hope that you had a safe and fun Halloween, and are looking forward to the rest of this year’s holiday season.

Growing up in Escondido, Calif., Seaman Leticia Garza always said she wanted to be a doctor. When she struggled to stay in school for financial reasons she turned to her husband for help. “My husband who is in the Marine Corps suggested that I join the Navy and become a corpsman,” said Garza. “I wanted to be a doctor so I took him up on the offer and here I am now.” Garza, a corpsman with Cherry Point’s Naval Health Clinic, works in the Woman’s Health Clinic ensuring that all women are healthy and ready to deploy. “I make sure that all female Marines, Sailors and spouses are taken care of medically and are healthy enough to go on a deployment,” said Garza. “If they aren’t healthy or haven’t had their proper screening then deployment may not happen.” Garza says the most challenging part of her job is learning numerous things in the medical field and having the ability to switch between departments such as moving from the WHC to “sick call.” However, she says that her diversity in her job is a great thing. “Being flexible is a good quality to have which is what this job is all about,” she said. “Learning everything, switching areas and just overall being able to adapt to change is great.” With the opportunity to diversify herself in the medical field, Garza says she doesn’t regret the path she chose. “I love being a corpsman,” said Garza. “I never thought I would be where I am today.”

Military Family Month Throughout our Nation’s history, an unbroken chain of patriots has strengthened us in times of peace and defended us in times of war. Yet the courageous men and women of the United States military do not serve alone. Standing alongside them are husbands and wives, parents and children, sisters and brothers. During Military Family Month, we celebrate the families who make daily sacrifices to keep our Nation whole, and we remember a most sacred obligation -- to serve them as well as they serve us. Military families exemplify the courage and resolve that define our national character. For their country and their loved ones, they rise to the challenges of multiple deployments and frequent moves -- spouses who care and provide for children in their partners’ absence, kids who make new friends and leave known comforts behind. They are the force behind the force, patriots who support their family members in uniform while enriching the communities they call home. While our Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen are defending the country they love, their country must provide for the families they love. Through First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden’s Joining Forces initiative, my Administration has worked tirelessly to engage American citizens and businesses in this cause. Joining Forces encourages the private sector to hire veterans and military spouses, helps schools become more responsive to military children’s needs, and expands access to wellness and education programs for military families. Since the initiative began in 2011, businesses have hired and trained more than 290,000 veterans and military spouses. My Administration is also taking action to improve mental health care and education for veterans, service members, and their families. Last year, I signed an Executive Order directing the Federal Government to increase access to these vital services. And this year, as a result of the Supreme Court decision striking down Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act, the Department of Defense moved swiftly to extend benefits to legally married same-sex couples. Time and again, our service members and their families have sacrificed to protect the promise that defines our Nation -- life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. As we work to repay this enormous debt of gratitude, I encourage every American to do their part. Together, let us support our military children as they learn, grow, and live their dreams. And let us keep our military families strong and secure. Now, therefore, I, Barack Obama, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim November 2013 as Military Family Month. I call on all Americans to honor military families through private actions and public service for the tremendous contributions they make in the support of our service members and our Nation. In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this thirty-first day of October in the year of our Lord two thousand thirteen, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-eighth.

MARINE CORPS AIR STATION MIRAMAR, Calif. – High above the clouds, two MV-22B Ospreys fly in need of fuel. Luckily, there is a KC-130J Super Hercules flying with them to provide aerial refueling so they can continue without stops. Ospreys with Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 161 and a Super Hercules with Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 352 conducted an exercise to practice aerial refueling aboard Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Calif, Oct. 24. “[Being able to refuel in flight] gives us a lot of time in the air,” said Sgt. Jacob Luksha, a crew chief with VMM-161. “We could be flying in Afghanistan on an eighthour mission with about three hours of gas and without landing anywhere, we can refuel and go back to continue the mission.” The two squadrons worked together for pilots to practice aligning the aircraft for connecting and to hone their communication skills.

“We communicate initially,” said Capt. Patrick McCammond, a pilot with VMM161 and a Morehead City, N.C., native. “They control us as we’re moving around them. The exercise helps us to have brevity. You tell them what you need, they give you what you want and you move out of the way for the next person.” Although the Ospreys can not connect at the same time, it was important to have both flying together so the Super Hercules’ pilots can practice communicating with multiple aircraft at once and to make the training as realistic as possible for all involved, explained McCammond. “I think it allows Marines to maintain proficiency,” said McCammond. “If pilots and air crew don’t work together you might lose [skills]. You have to be in the environment frequently to maintain what you do and to improve.” The pilots and air crew train as often as it takes to ensure everyone is proficient and qualified.

“Fire in the hole, fire in the hole, fire in the hole!” is heard followed by the deafening sound of several pounds of explosives detonating on the Explosive Ordnance Disposal range during the Commander’s Incentive Program event Oct. 30. Sgt. Johazais K. Wyble and Lance Cpl. Abdiel J. Moralesramos of the Installation Personnel Administration Center were selected by their section leadership to step out of their office for a day to take part in ordnance familiarization on the EOD range as a reward for their continuous outstanding performance. The Commander’s Incentive Program was implemented by Lt. Col. Charles J. Basham, commanding officer of Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron, as a way to award exemplary Marines in a unique way for going above and beyond their daily duties. Marines are selected for the program quarterly based on their ability to efficiently complete daily tasks, as well as showing they have a desire to improve themselves personally and professionally. “I believe I was selected because I expressed interest in the program and stayed out of trouble in addition to the basic requirements,” said Wyble, the personnel noncommissioned officer in charge with IPAC. Marines who are selected for the program are sent to the EOD range, the pistol range for a pistol shoot, to the

flight simulators, or to Marine Transport Squadron 1 to participate in a scheduled training flight on the HH-46D Sea Knight helicopter known as “Pedro.” As their reward, Wyble and Moralesramos, along with several EOD techs, performed a basic demolition day which consisted of instructional periods, practical application and basic demolition techniques utilizing a variety of explosives. Some of the explosives the Marines used were C3, sheet explosives, TNT and military dynamite. “This is the second set of Marines who have come to the EOD since the start of the incentive program,” said Master Sgt. William Walker, the station EOD chief. “It is great getting to show them something most Marines will never get to see and it gives us a chance to show off.” Wyble is happy she got the chance to be a part of the Commander’s Incentive Program because she is showing her Marines that hard work does pay off and that there is something fun they can work toward. “This experience was awesome; it was nothing like I would have expected,” said Moralesramos. “It was so cool actually getting to help build the bombs and set them off.” Walker said the program is great for the Marines participating on both sides. It is important for Marines to get out of their proverbial box and to be rewarded for the hard work that they do, he said.

Sgt. Johazais K. Wyble, left, and Gunnery Sgt. Bernard J. Coyne plant an explosive in the ground at the Explosive Ordnance Disposal range Oct. 30. Wyble was one of two Marines selected to participate in the Commander’s Incentive Program, a program made to award exemplary Marines. Coyne is an EOD technician.

way was refitted. “It was incredible,” said Sgt. Patrick G. Tosetti, a heavy-equipment operator and a project supervisor for the runway with MWSS-172. “It was nice for all the Marines who worked hard on the project to actually get out here and land on something they (repaired).” The Seabees provided their unique expeditionary expertise while instructing the Marines in methods to strip and resurface the coral runway. “The runway is compacted soil with a top layer of crushed coral,” said 1st Lt. Justin Y. King, the commanding officer of Engineering Operations Company, MWSS-172. “With water and compaction, it becomes a smooth surface; it’s not the same as asphalt. Coral is just an easily-accessible, natural material in this area, and if there’s any run off, it won’t have any negative effects on the environment.” Brown knows his Marines and the Seabees worked tirelessly during the reconstruction, and they should be proud of their accomplishment. “Every Marine in the squadron takes a lot of pride in the work that they do to keep Marine aviation expeditionary,” said Brown. “The countless hours they spent working on the runway has paid off. They are keeping Marines and aircraft safe and capable to deploy anywhere in the Pacific.”

Marines pass air space control to Air Force

CPL. AUSTIN LONG

Chief Warrant Officer Martin Hood turns off the TPS-59 radar during a deactivation ceremony for the Tactical Air Operations Center at Camp Leatherneck, Afghanistan, Nov. 2. Turning off the radar symbolized the end of deployment rotations to Afghanistan for Marine air control squadrons and the end of an era for the radar. Hood is the maintenance officer for Marine Air Control Group 28 (Forward).

CPL. AUSTIN LONG REGIONAL COMMAND SOUTHWEST

CAMP LEATHERNECK, Afghanistan – The Tactical Air Operations Center operated by Marine Air Control Squadron 2 at Camp Leatherneck was deactivated during a ceremony Nov. 2, marking the end of four years of successful operations. Since 2009, the operations center has coordinated more than 320,000 fixedwing, 80,000 aerial refueling, and 7,000 rotary wing operations in support of coalition forces throughout Afghanistan. Marines with MACS-2, serving under 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing (Forward), handed over responsibility for airspace control to the U.S. Air Force’s 71st Expeditionary Air Control Squadron based in Qatar, marking both the end of the unit’s deployment and the end of deployment cycles for Marine air control units. Controlling the air Serving in Iraq in 2009, MACS-2 was sent directly to Afghanistan to provide mission-critical airspace surveillance and control capabilities in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. The 2nd Marine Expeditionary BrigadeAfghanistan established the Tactical Air Operations Center following the redeploy-

ment of the British Royal Air Force Number 1 Air Control Centre. The operations center has functioned around the clock to deconflict airspace in Regional Command Southwest, an area consisting of more than 70,000 miles of airspace. During the last two years, Marines with MACS-1 and 2 have supported more than 1,200 troops-in-contact missions; 3,400 priority-tasking missions; and 4,800 surface-to-surface fire missions. Keeping radar in the fight During the ceremony, the Marines retired the unit’s TPS-59 radar, which had been used by the operations center since November 2009. The radar is key to the air command and control mission, providing positive control of friendly aircraft, detection of enemy aircraft and missiles and situational awareness to higher headquarters and combatant commanders. The TPS-59 was essential to the operations center and allowed Marines to update pilots with flight pattern information, providing them exact information pertaining to aircraft separation. “The radar is a vital piece of gear,” said Staff Sgt. Serapio Lara, the senior air traf-

fic director. “It gives us peace of mind, and the pilots peace of mind that we have positive control of the situation, which gives everyone comfort that we are relaying good information without human error.” Maintaining the radar The TPS-59 radar was designed to operate for short periods of time in expeditionary settings; however, due to the mission requirements in Afghanistan, the radar has operated continuously since its installation. During the deployment, the maintenance section worked continuously on the radar system to ensure proper functionality. The Marines performed preventive maintenance regularly, keeping the radar functioning at its peak ability. The few times the radar needed corrective maintenance, the Marines were able to quickly and effectively correct the problem, said Staff Sgt. Jack Linke, staff noncommissioned officer in charge. “What’s significant about this equipment is that we’ve taken expeditionary gear and sustained it for 24-hours a day, seven days a week, for the last four years,” said Lt. Col. Charles Smith, the commanding officer of Marine Air Control Group 28 (Forward).

The future of Marine air control units To end the ceremony, Chief Warrant Officer Martin Hood, the maintenance section officer in charge, turned off the radar, symbolizing both the transfer of responsibility and the end of a technological era. Afghanistan will serve as the last deployment for the radar. It has been used by the Marine Corps since 1985. After 28 years of service, the radar is being replaced with a new system. Due to the change, air control units will have new equipment, new operating procedures, and new readiness qualifications. “It’s going to be a huge transition for us,” said Master Sgt. Herbert Smith, the unit’s senior air director. “But it’s going to be a good transition for us, moving in a new direction.” With equipment retrograde and the redeployment of MACS-2, air control units will return to preparing themselves for the next expeditionary mission. “This deactivation marks the end of this chapter in our history; however, it is also a step forward for Marine Air Command and Control, the Marine Corps and our great nation,” said Linke. “The operations have been tallied and the logs have been closed. [The Air Force] has the watch now.”

Walters, a former commanding general of 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, salutes the colors as they pass by at the Carteret County Veterans Day parade in Morehead City, N.C., Nov. 10, 2012. On Saturday Maj. Commandant’s Veterans Day message Since the creation of Armistice Day in 1919, we have paused on 11 November to remember all members of our armed forces who have risked their lives in defense of our nation. Officially redesignated as veteran’s day after World War II, we have used this time to honor our Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines for their courage and sacrifice. Veterans Day continues to resonate close to many of us as we reflect on the brave men and women who have given their all in countless battles on foreign soil. Today, many of our brothers and sisters remain forward deployed in Afghanistan and around the globe. During this holiday, take time to remember our distinguished veterans, honor their service and sacrifices, and celebrate the freedoms our nation provides. Semper Fidelis! Commandant of the Marine Corps

National Native American Heritage Month From Alaskan mountain peaks to the Argentinian pampas to the rocky shores of Newfoundland, Native Americans were the first to carve out cities, domesticate crops and establish great civilizations. When the Framers gathered to write the United States Constitution, they drew inspiration from the Iroquois Confederacy, and in the centuries since, American Indians and Alaska Natives from hundreds of tribes have shaped our national life. During Native American Heritage Month, we honor their vibrant cultures and strengthen the governmentto-government relationship between the United States and each tribal nation. As we observe this month, we must not ignore the painful history Native Americans have endured a history of violence, marginalization, broken promises and upended justice. There was a time when native languages and religions were banned as part of a forced assimilation policy that attacked the political, social and cultural identities of Native Americans in the United States. Through generations of struggle, American Indians and Alaska Natives held fast to their traditions, and eventually the United States Government repudiated its destructive policies and began to turn the page on a troubled past. My administration remains committed to self-determination, the right of tribal governments to build and strengthen their own communities. Each year I host the White House Tribal Nations Conference, and our work together has translated into action. We have resolved long-standing legal disputes, prioritized placing land into trust on behalf of tribes, stepped up support for Tribal colleges and universities, made tribal health care more accessible and streamlined leasing regulations to put more power in tribal hands. Earlier this year, an amendment to the Stafford Act gave tribes the option to directly request Federal emergency assistance when natural disasters strike their homelands. In March, I signed the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act, which recognizes tribal courts’ power to convict and sentence certain perpetrators of domestic violence, regardless of whether they are Indian or non-Indian. And this June, I moved to strengthen our nation-to-nation relationships by establishing the White House Tribal Council on Native American Affairs. The Council is responsible for promoting and sustaining prosperous and resilient Native American communities. As we observe Native American Heritage Month, we must build on this work. Let us shape a future worthy of a bright new generation, and together, let us ensure this country’s promise is fully realized for every Native American. Now, therefore, I, Barack Obama, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim November 2013 as National Native American Heritage Month. I call upon all Americans to commemorate this month with appropriate programs and activities and to celebrate November 29, 2013, as Native American Heritage Day. In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this thirty-first day of October, in the year of our Lord two thousand thirteen, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-eighth. Barack Obama President

Jimmie Johnson dominates AAA Texas 500; credits test sessions two weeks prior to race for team’s success

Ty Dillon delivers command performance in Camping World Truck Series victory at Texas

Harold Hinson for Chevrolet

To hear Jimmie Johnson and his crew chief Chad Knaus tell it, the start of their dominating run in the AAA Texas 500 at Texas Motor Speedway on Sunday can be traced to a test session at the track two weeks prior to the race weekend. “After two days, we really honed in on the balance of the car and comfort of the car,” Johnson said in his winner’s interview after leading the most laps, winning the race and moving seven points ahead of Matt Kenseth with just two races left to run. “We felt really strong about things, but at the same time, we’re here testing, as all of our competitors were as well. So it was tough to leave here overly excited, because your competition is here getting better and getting data and all of that as well. “So we came back and just kept our blinders on and focused on our team, our race car and got the thing pretty dang awesome.” Knaus pointed out that Kenseth, who entered Texas tied with Johnson atop the points standings but finished fourth in the race, didn’t have such a good Texas test. He crashed his No. 20 Toyota after blowing a tire during the session. “I know if I was [Kenseth’s team], and I came here and on my last day of testing I

Jimmie Johnson led the most laps and took the checkered flag in the AAA Texas 500.

Johnson said that testing at Texas two weeks earlier helped the team with the balance of the No. 48.

“I think it paid huge dividends for us from a lot of different levels, and it was good.” Kenseth shouldered much of the blame for his team’s inability to come up with a winning setup at Texas, which historically has been one of his best tracks. “We’re just a little off,” he said. “I just couldn’t help [the crew] enough to give them the information they needed to get in the car what I needed to run a little bit better. “It’s all on me. We just worked hard that first [Texas] race, came and tested, worked hard through all the practice sessions, threw a lot of stuff at it and just never had it quite good enough.” But Kenseth said Johnson’s points lead can be overcome. “It’s not insurmountable,” he said. “It’s still in your hands. The math works out if you win the last two races. “If we go out there and can outrun everybody for two weeks, then it’s ours.”

blew a right-front tire, I’d be nervous coming back,” Knaus said. “So that had to have been looming over them.” Knaus said he believes his No. 48 team also came out ahead in a test session last week at Homestead-Miami Speedway, in which teams prepared for the season-ending Ford 400. “Quite honestly, based on what I saw at Homestead, they’re probably pretty nervous about that same thing happening there,” he said. Knaus said there were several things learned at the Texas test, which was rained out and then rescheduled, that helped his team score its first victory on a 1.5-mile track this year. “I think it was very beneficial for us,” he said. “We were able to really kind of break down what the race car was doing. Jimmie was able to go out there and kind of explore a little bit and find the nuances of the race track in kind of a more calm environment.

The news of Martin Truex Jr.’s loss of sponsorship from NAPA Auto Parts after his Michael Waltrip Racing team’s involvement in the race-altering scandal at Richmond in September couldn’t have come at a worse time for the veteran Sprint Cup driver. By early fall, most team and sponsor deals for the upcoming season are already in place, and the looming shutdown of his No. 56 team could have put him without a quality ride for the 2014 season. But Kurt Busch’s surprise departure from the No. 78 Furniture Row Racing Chevrolet team opened the door for Truex to take over as driver for that team, which, despite its single-car status, has proven that it’s a legitimate Chase contender. Truex and Furniture Row made the official announcement of their pairing last week at Texas Motor Speedway. “As unlucky as I got at Richmond a month or two ago, I got just as lucky when this deal turned up,” Truex said. “What can you say? I guess all things happen for a reason; hopefully all this happened for a reason, and we will be able to do some great things together.” He said there were some anxious moments after NAPA announced that it was dropping his current team after he was removed from the Chase by NASCAR as

Martin Truex Jr. signs 2014 Sprint Cup sponsor deal with Furniture Row Racing

Martin Truex Jr. announces his new sponsor deal with Furniture Row for the 2014 Sprint Cup season. part of punishment for MWR’s actions at Richmond, none of which directly involved Truex or his No. 56 crew. “The biggest thing for me as a driver is, a few weeks ago when dominoes started to fall, I wasn’t sure where I would end up,” he said. “To have an opportunity like this — this late in the season — I just feel really blessed. I feel really lucky and definitely excited and looking forward to the future with this team.”

In joining Furniture Row, which has an alliance with Richard Childress Racing, Truex will get to work with his close friend and fellow racer Ryan Newman, who is moving to RCR to drive that team’s No. 31 Chevrolet next year. “We will kind of be teammates next year, which is really cool,” Truex said. “I’m looking forward to working with him and hopefully helping each other.” And he said he doesn’t believe the singlecar operation is as much of a disadvantage as some might assume, because single-car teams can make changes more quickly than multi-car operations. “When they want to build a part and put it on the race car, they do it,” he said. “There is no five, six weeks of it going through a system to get it on the race car. I think that from a technology standpoint, I think it’s a great thing. There are a lot less channels for things to go through.” Furniture Row’s general manager Joe Garone also announced that his team has hired the current crew of Truex’s No. 56 to service his No. 78 next year. “We’ve been able to secure Martin’s pit crew; actually bring them on board in fulltime positions for 2014,” he said. “I think that is going to really help that part of our program.”

A week after his soon-to-be former teammate Kevin Harvick called him a “rich kid” who got his ride only because his grandfather was a team owner, Ty Dillon put on a command performance in the Camping World Truck Series race at Texas Motor Speedway. He led 130 of 147 laps to get his second Truck win of the season and third of his career. The victory marked the 100th in a major NASCAR series by a No. 3 Chevrolet fielded by Dillon’s grandfather, Richard Childress. The late Dale Earnhardt got the majority of those victories. Dillon’s crew chief, Marcus Richmond, who was fined by NASCAR after a pit crew member tossed a mallet at Harvick after he and Dillon crashed at Martinsville Speedway, said Friday night’s win was especially rewarding, in light of the events of the previous week. “We’ve had some bad luck the last few weeks and after everything that happened last weekend, this was a great way to show how strong this Bass Pro Shops team really is,” Richmond said.

AMS publicity director dies after cancer battle The NASCAR community lost one of its most tireless and dedicated workers last week. Marcy Scott, who managed publicity at Atlanta Motor Speedway, and prior to that worked as a publicist for drivers including Matt Kenseth, Jeff Green and Ward Burton, died of cancer at age 42. “We will all miss her charisma, her penchant for detail and her way of making any task fun and enjoyable,” AMS president Ed Clark said in a statement. “To people throughout the NASCAR and the Atlanta media communities, she was a great friend and a consummate professional.” Martin Truex Jr. said Scott’s struggle with cancer and her death helped him realize that career uncertainty like he experienced in recent weeks, and NASCAR racing in general, are not always the most important things in life. “You think about people like Marcy Scott — losing her,” he said. “You know, life is not fair. As big of a deal as this is to a lot of us, sometimes it’s not the end of the world.”

Sprint Cup victories at Phoenix by Chevrolet, the most of any manufacturer.

Johnson takes the lead in Sprint Cup points standings with two races remaining Points standings and race results following the AAA Texas 500 at Texas Motor Speedway:

1. JIMMIE JOHNSON (finished first) 2,342 points; leader He dominated the race, leading a whopping 255 of 334 laps to score the maximum 48 points and break a tie with Matt Kenseth, the only driver with a reasonable chance of stopping him from winning a sixth Sprint Cup title. “It’s hard to get points in this championship battle, and we got a couple [Sunday].”

2. MATT KENSETH (finished fourth) 2,335 points; behind –7 He overcame a penalty for speeding on pit road to score a top-5 finish and remain in the running for the championship. “Honestly, the 48 (Johnson) had us from the time they unloaded until the time they put it back on the truck. They were just dominant all weekend.”

3. KEVIN HARVICK (finished eighth) 2,302 points; behind –40 Another steady performance kept him clinging to an outside chance of winning the championship, but it won’t happen unless both Johnson and Kenseth experience major setbacks in one of the next two races.

4. KYLE BUSCH (finished 13th) 2,290 points; behind –52 He battled back from an early wreck to run up front, only to be caught speeding on pit road late. “[Busch] was giving us all he had to give us — the best finish possible, and we took a little bit more than what was there,” said crew chief Dave Rogers of the speeding penalty.

5. DALE EARNHARDT JR.

9. JOEY LOGANO

(finished second) 2,280 points; behind –62 He scored his third runner-up finish in the past six races, but he hasn’t been able to overcome a 35th-place finish in the Chase opener. Otherwise, he has an average Chase finish of 5.4. “We feel like we’re doing a lot of good work and getting really close to probably breaking through and getting a win.”

(finished third) 2,251 points; behind –91 His Ford was fast, but not nearly as fast as Johnson’s No. 48 Chevrolet. “Overall, we can’t be disappointed with a third-place finish, but the 48 car was just ridiculously fast.”

6. JEFF GORDON (finished 38th) 2,273 points; behind –69 After entering the race with an outside chance to catch Johnson and Kenseth, a blown tire led to a crash that essentially took him out of the title hunt. “You just can’t have things like this happen if you are going to make a run at a championship.”

7. CLINT BOWYER (finished 10th) 2,273 points; behind –69 He’s had six finishes of 11th or better in the eight Chase races to date, and a worst of just 17th, at New Hampshire, but he started the Chase with no bonus points and has just one top-5 finish, a third at Martinsville.

8. GREG BIFFLE (finished 12th) 2,269 points; behind –73 He hasn’t had a top-5 finish since the second race of the Chase, at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, where he finished third. He never seemed to really get going at Texas. “We just weren’t where we wanted to be. It was a tough day.”

10. KURT BUSCH (finished 17th) 2,246 points; behind –96 After a runner-up run at Kansas, he’s had four straight finishes outside the top 10 and has been mathematically eliminated from title contention, as have the drivers below him in the standings. “We need a turn-around in the final two races, because it has been too good of a year to end on a struggling note.”

11. CARL EDWARDS (finished 37th) 2,226 points; behind –116 He started on the pole, but fell out with a blown engine and now finds himself outside the top 10, which is the cutoff for being on stage at the annual awards banquet in Las Vegas. “We will just go on to Phoenix and, hopefully, get another win there and go to Homestead.”

12. RYAN NEWMAN (finished ninth) 2,224 points; behind –118 Despite a loose-handling car, he scored his 17th top-10 finish of the season and his fifth in the Chase. “We just couldn’t get it to where I needed it to be. But in spite of how much we struggled today, to finish ninth was good.”

13. KASEY KAHNE (finished fifth) 2,209 points; behind –133 He’s still at the bottom of the Chase standings despite his second top-5 in the past four races. “I’m glad we were able to have kind of a flawless race, and race all day and make a little bit of ground at the end.”
