On Oct. 15, Staff Sgt. Wesley E. Helms, a career planner with the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wings Marine Air Control Group 28 was recognized as the Commandant of the Marine Corps’ Career Planner of the Year for the 2013 fiscal year. The Career Planner of the Year Award was established to recognize exceptional performance within the active duty career planning occupational field and to identify and award the Marine that displays the highest degree of leadership skills and ability. Whether he is processing reenlistments, processing special duty assignments or preparing quality citizens to enter back into the civilian world, Helms holds the careers of Marines in his hands. The career planners were selected to compete on a board held by Headquarters Marine Corps for a trip to an award ceremony in Quantico, Va., a meritorious promotion and the coveted title of Career Planner of the Year. “A unit career planner is a principle staff officer and he or she must be enthusiastically recommended by their

Marines with Marine Attack Squadron 223 departed from Cherry Point for the USS Bataan Oct. 24 and Oct. 26 in preparation for an upcoming deployment with the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit. VMA-223’s mission is to provide offensive air support, armed reconnaissance and air defense for Marine expeditionary forces. “Our mission for the work up is to provide fixed wing tactical air assets for the MEU commander and augment the (Air Combat Element) with mission-essential tasks such as armed reconnaissance and air defense,” said Maj. James D. Banton, the Air Combat Element supply officer, with Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 263 (Reinforced).” The squadron completed training in preparation for the MEU. The pilots trained for this work up by conducting flights in AV-8B Harrier simulators, completing approximately five hours of flight time each week. Capt. Craig W. Air station to test new emergency alert system CONTRIBUTED ARTICLE MCAS CHERRY POINT

A new emergency mass notification system will soon send alerts to all personnel on the air station who have “usmc.mil” email addresses as part of a Corps-wide program to improve emergency communications on Marine Corps installations. The AtHoc Emergency Mass Notification System, which was first fielded last December, was loaded to Cherry Pointbased computers on Oct. 3. Anyone here, including air station and tenant organizations such as the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, with a “usmc.mil” account in the Global Address System will receive computer pop-up alerts during qualified emergencies that could affect Cherry Point-based personnel. Plans are in place to add other addresses to the alert system, such as “navy.mil” and those for other tenant organizations. Additionally, notifications may be sent via work telephone, work email, text message, cell phone and personal email. Based on this capability, end-users have the ability to receive critical emergency notifications or instructions anywhere at any time. The first test message will be sent to end-users on Nov. 6 between 9 and 10 a.m. The pop-up test message on your computer desktop will require you to push “Acknowledge.” An audible alarm will accompany this pop-up on all computers. F-35 reaches significant milestone The 33rd Fighter Wing and the F-35 Lightning II program reached a new milestone when Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron 501 completed its first short takeoff and vertical landing mission at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla., Oct. 24. Maj. Brendan M. Walsh flew the hour-long mission in which the aircraft remained in the STOVL configuration for the entire flight. The aircraft flew pattern procedures around the base before gliding in, stopping in mid-air about 100 feet off the Eglin runway, performing a stationary right turn and slowly landing. Walsh is the only pilot at Eglin qualified to fly in the STOVL configuration, but he said the flight paved the way to locally train F-35B instructors and new students in STOVL operations. The STOVL operation also marks a significant achievement in the program for some partner countries. VMFAT501 hosted three pilots and 13 maintainers from the United Kingdom’s Royal Air Force and Royal Navy.

TRICARE role in health care law Beginning Jan. 1, everyone residing in the United States is required to have some type of health insurance or pay a tax based on household income that could go as high as 2.5 percent. Anyone not insured through their employer must use the new Health Insurance Marketplace to find a plan that best suits their needs. Military personnel, veterans, civilians and their families covered under TRICARE will not see a change in their plan or tax status. No additional action is required. If you’re enrolled in or a beneficiary of a veterans health care program, you’re condsidered to have the minimum essential coverage required. Service members who separate from the military are eligible for 180 days of TRICARE for free after they separate. Prior service members can also purchase the Continued Health Care Benefit Program for an additional 18-36 months of minimum essential coverage. Once that runs out, it’s important that the minimum essential coverage is obtained through other means to avoid the fee. Starting Jan. 1, if someone doesn’t have a health plan that qualifies as minimum essential coverage, they may have to pay a fee that increases every year: from 1 percent of household income (or $95 per adult, whichever is higher) in 2014 to 2.5 percent of income (or $695 per adult) in 2016. The fee for children is half the adult amount. The fee is paid on the 2014 federal income tax form, which is completed in 2015. And if you don’t fork over the cash, the IRS will deduct the amount from a future tax refund. The Health Insurance Marketplace opened Oct. 1. To obtain coverage, visit www.healthcare.gov to get started. For further guidance on the new healthcare laws, visit https://www.whitehouse.gov.

The Oath of Office LT. CMDR. DAVID SLATER DEPUTY WING CHAPLAIN

As veterans ourselves, how do we view Veterans Day? Is it just a reason to enjoy another 96-hour liberty or does it hold for us a deeper meaning? As we approach another Veterans Day, I think there is a need to recall its origin. On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, the guns fell silent across Europe and WWI came to an end. Since then, Veterans Day has been set aside to remember all those who have served honorably in the military; whether during war or peace. It is a day for the nation to honor and give thanks for all the men and women who signed on the dotted line to “support and defend the Constitution” and protect our nation. It is a privilege to serve a citizenry so eager to honor those who defend their freedom. As today’s veterans, we are heirs to this magnificent legacy and glorious cause. However, with the privilege to serve also comes great responsibility. It is a responsibility we all agree to accept the moment we raise our hand and swear to uphold our Oath of Enlistment or Oath of Office. Without minimizing the importance of the body of

the oath – to support and defend the Constitution, bear true faith and allegiance, obey orders – I think the most critical parts of the oath are the first and last lines. They say, “I do solemnly swear, so help me God.” It’s no small thing to swear an oath, to make a solemn promise. Our word must be our bond if we are to be people of integrity. However, it is all the more serious when we swear an oath in God’s name! The “Good Book” says, “When you make a vow to God, do not be slack in paying it; for he takes no delight in fools. Pay what you vow! It is better that you should not vow than that you should vow and not pay,” (Ecclesiastes 5:4-5). It’s too late to back out now because we’ve already sworn an oath, “so help me God.” Now it’s more than just a solemn oath but also a sacred one. The only thing left to do is our absolute best to fulfill our vow because we haven’t just made a promise to the Marine Corps and our nation, but to God himself. May we all celebrate this Veterans Day as service members and families of integrity determined and committed to “pay what you vow.”

Lance Cpl. Donta J. Canty thinks most Marines get a good idea of whether the Marine Corps is for them or not, during their first enlistment. The Chesapeake, Va., native said he has grown to love the Corps and hopes to advance through the ranks. Upon entering the Marine Corps, he had challenges, but thanks to leaders giving him guidance and leading him in the right direction, he will compete on an upcoming meritorious corporal board. Canty, who serves with Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 467, is not only an aircraft maintenance administration specialist, he is also a desk sergeant and a leader of Marines. He maintains law books such as assembly service records and maintenance records for all the aircraft operated by the squadron including the AH-1W Super Cobra and the UH-1Y Venom. Canty is currently serving in a sergeant’s billet as a lance corporal and teaches those in his shop the fundamentals of aircraft inspections and record keeping. On a more personal note, he gives advice to Marines to deter them from heading in the wrong direction. Maintaining records for more than 10 aircraft is a tedious but fufilling job for Canty. “I would have to say my favorite part of my job is the fact that it’s complicated and very much needed,” he said. “Without the records there would not be a log of what needs to be replaced or fixed, which could hinder the mission.”

While going through their daily routines, a search and rescue crew with Marine Transport Squadron 1 got a call May 20 to aid a boater stranded approximately three miles off the coast of Atlantic Beach. Within a few minutes, the crew fired up their HH-46E Sea Knight and were ready to respond. As they visually located the vessel from inside the aircraft, they hoisted down rescue swimmer Lance Cpl. Benjamin D. Bargar into water to retrieve the boater who was weak from heat stroke and dehydration. After hoisting the victim into the aircraft, the crew transported him to Carteret Hospital to be treated. Similar scenarios can occur any time, any place. In preparation for such real-life scenarios, Marines and Sailors with VMR-1 train to rescue stranded casualties. A search and rescue crew with the squadron conducted hoisting training in Hobucken, N.C., to recieve their qualifications Oct. 24, with a SAR team and utility boat from Coast Guard Station Hobucken. For the Marines and Sailor on the flight, the training

served as an opportunity to improve their proficiency and work with the Coast Guardsmen they often work with to accomplish their mission of saving lives. “At anytime we have to be prepared to rescue people on boats,” said Bargar. “This training is vital because it exposes us to things we may encounter and helps us stay on top of our game. In case of an emergency, we need to be able to perform under pressure.” Although the techniques rehearsed during the flight were just for practice, the members aboard the aircraft performed as though it were the real deal. Bargar, who has been a rescue swimmer for more than a year, also received search and rescue crew chief qualifications during the training. To pass his evaluation, Bargar had to execute hoisting techniques with personnel and gear in a safe manner. While training, Bargar said the only thing going through his mind was making sure everything went smoothly, especially for the pilots who often have a hard time seeing what is happening below the aircraft. Becoming a SAR crew chief and being a rescue swimmer is important to Bargar because he wants to be a well-

rounded asset to his unit. “At anytime I can be put into any situation because I will know how to handle it,” he said. Also receiving SAR qualifications was Seaman Justin M. Jones, a search and rescue medical technician trainee. After hoisting down into the Coast Guard’s utility boat, Jones practiced working with different types of search and rescue equipment from aboard the vessel. Jones said his training complemented Bargar’s perfectly. “I was learning how do to the same types of things he was, just from an opposite perspective,” said Jones. “While he was inside the aircraft working with the gear, I was working with our equipment from the boat.” Although the trainee said he was nervous about how he would perform at first because he had not had the opportunity to practice from a boat, Jones said he felt more confident as the training progressed. Since coming to the squadron five months ago, the Sailor said he looks forward to future opportunities to make a difference and potentially save lives.

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Marines with Air Delivery Platoon, 2nd Marine Logistics Group waited anxiously in the cool weather for an MV-22B Osprey to arrive at Tactical Landing Zone Pheasant, here, Oct. 21. The parachute riggers with Air Delivery Plt. were renewing jump certifications and maintaining mission readiness. Air delivery reduces the hazards associated with moving supplies by ground, such as improvised explosive devices. Planes can fly in without detection, then drop a payload to a drop zone, allowing troops to be resupplied with minimal time on the ground. “As part of the logistics [military occupational specialty] it gives us the capability of putting fewer trucks on the ground and in harm’s way,” said Sgt. Milford Anthony, a Kaneohe, Hawaii, native, platoon sergeant and air delivery chief with Landing Support Company. “We can fly supplies over and parachute those supplies to the ground without endangering any vehicles, and the people who rig up the supplies also have the capability of parachuting, so we can parachute in and secure the equipment until ground elements arrive on site to put the equipment to use.” More than 15 Marines jumped from the Osprey, some with packs and rifles, others with just their [personal protective equipment] and parachutes. To continue performing at peak levels Marines with the military occupational specialty must complete jumps every three months. Lance Cpl. James Lewis, a Canton, Mich. native and rigger with Air Delivery Plt., said he loves the initial exit out of the plane, but isn’t fond of landing. To prepare for this job field, Marines attend a three-week course at Fort Benning, Ga. During the course, students learn how to exit an aircraft, maneuver with gear, emergency procedures, and how to land properly. They test these techniques during four daytime jumps and a final jump, which is performed at night. Students also learn hand and arm signals that are crucial for communication during the jumps.

Space-A flights offer free travel with DoD aircraft to service members, families, retirees CPL. SARAH DIETZ MARINE CORPS BASE HAWAII – KANEOHE BAY

KANEOHE BAY, Hawaii - Space-available flights is a service offered by the Department of Defense which provides unused seats on military flights to service members, their families and retirees looking to travel at little to no cost. Although the flight is free, there is no guaranteed spot. The seat assignments are made on a space-available basis. “It’s certainly a money saver if they have the time and patience to use it,” said Ron Abernathy, flight chief with passenger services at Joint Base Pearl Harbor – Hickam Air Mobility Command. “As an example we typically move approximately 90,000 passengers annually through our facility and much of our business is

through the education process of other services.” In Hawaii, the nearest Space-A is Joint Base Pearl Harbor – Hickam AMC Passenger Terminal. Flight schedules for Space-A are released three days ahead of the planned departures. Seats available are listed as early as two to three hours before the flight. Passengers are also ranked in order of priority, depending on the importance of the travel. Vacations on leave are accepted reasons for Space-A travel, but service members with emergency leave receive priority. Registration for the Space-A flights are only valid for 60 days with the exception of active duty. The earlier a passenger is

registered, the higher priority they have in their travel group. Passengers can register for a flight in five ways: In person, fax, email, Internet or mail. Space-A occasionally flies with commercial contracted flights. In this case, there will be a fee between $15 and $30 depending on the airport. There would also be a fee for meals served aboard those flights. Flexibility is key when flying Space-A, Abernathy said. Space-A, though efficient and financially beneficial, is risky. There are no guarantees to or from the intended passenger destination. “If you have to be at a destination on a particular date and are relying on a SpaceA flight I would advise against it as there

are too many variables affecting military flights,” Abernathy said. “Having said that, our system is perfect for retirees who have time and flexibility on their side. For active duty who can’t sign up for Space-A until their leave is in effect, there is always the possibility of burning leave while waiting for their exact destination.” Travelers may carry two luggage items up to 70 pounds a piece at no charge. Space-A travels all over the world. Some exotic places the flights go are New Zealand, Australia, Singapore, Japan and the Philippines. Family dedicated to service, each other PFC. GRACE L. WALADKEWICS MCAS CHERRY POINT

Whether it was basketball, football or their all-time favorite, wrestling, the Hullenbaugh siblings could always be found horsing around and hanging out together. Growing up, the children of a retired Navy master chief who served 20 years as a cryptologic technician always had the military in their blood. The oldest of the four Hullenbaugh children, Cpl. Lisa Hullenbaugh, also known as Charlie, said her three younger brothers always looked up to her. “They copied me a lot, but I always felt the need to protect them and make sure no one hurt them,” said Charlie. Charlie’s brothers, George, 21, Nathaniel, 20, and Samuel, 18 have all followed her lead with regard to their choice to serve as Marines as well. Spread across three states and two separate countries performing jobs in the ground electronics maintenance field, the siblings bond remains as strong as ever. Charlie, the first to enlist, was dual enrolled in college and high school courses for literary arts during her high school career. “My brother George and I were known as Goth kids growing up,” said Charlie. “No one, not even I, could have imagined this is where I would be now.” Charlie is a telephone systems and personal computer repairer working as a switching technician with Telecommunications and Information Systems Directorate and station telephone at Cherry Point. She is responsible for installing and repairing telephones and providing around the clock technical support for callers. Lance Cpl. George M. Hullenbaugh II is serving with 3rd Batallion 5th Marine 1st Marine Division at Camp Pendleton and Lance Cpl. Nathaniel J. Hullenbaugh is currently deployed to Spain with 2nd Recon Batallion. Both brothers are actively serving as ground radio intermediate repairers, while Pfc. Samuel R. Hullenbaugh is currently attending Marine Combat Training at Camp

Geiger. Samuel is on track to become a ground electronics maintenance Marine upon graduation of his Military Occupational Specialty School. “I am proud of my brothers for serving, but it is hard knowing that they could be in danger and I can’t help them,” said Charlie. Charlie described her brothers as intelligent, hard working, fast learners. “There is definitely a competition for rank among all of us,” said Charlie. “George is looking at the warrant officer route and Nathaniel wants to serve for 20 years. We are all competing for the highest rank before any of us get out.” Samuel is the youngest and has been given all the keys to success, said Charlie. All three of the older siblings met the challenge, so Samuel should have nothing to worry about, she said. Charlie described the day she told her father that she was joining the Marine Corps and his shocked reaction when he found out she would be serving in the same job field to which he devoted 20 years of his life. “My father is very proud of all of us,” said Charlie. “I was a Navy brat all my life. I was stubborn and knew I wanted to join the Navy as a Corpsman, but after a few things in my life changed I finally told my father I was joining the Marine Corps in the signals intelligence field, and he just shook his head and laughed.” Having a whole household of successful children in the same job field is something he can always be proud of, she said. Although the Hullenbaughs are separated by geography, their bond remains strong. “It is really difficult at times because we are all split up,” said Charlie. “We can’t always talk on the phone due to training so we often settle for texts or sneaks of short phone calls.” Charlie said she feels honored that she gets to serve alongside her brothers but just can’t wait until they are all together again and knows that they are all safe.

Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 467 celebrates their fifth anniversary Oct. 24, at the squadron. The squadron activated in October of 2008. Since the activation, the squadron gained more than four times the number of aircraft than when they activated. The Sabers were the first HMLA activated since the Vietnam War.

Marines and UH-1N Hueys with Marine Light Helicopter Attack Squadron 467 attached to the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit to conduct a damage assessment of areas in New York and New Jersey affected by Hurricane Sandy Nov. 3, 2012. The Sabers not only provided aid in the Hurricane Sandy incident, but they provided humanitarian assistance and disaster relief efforts in Haiti.

In 2008, the commandant of the Marine Corps proposed to “grow the force,” from that idea arose Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 467. HMLA-467 was officially activated October 23, 2008. The squadron celebrated its fifth anniversary Thursday, by hosting a birthday party in its honor. More than 100 people attended the event. Maj. Lee Hemming, an AH-1W Super Cobra pilot with the squadron, said he remembers flying an attack helicopter to Cherry Point when the squadron stood up. “It was a great feeling to start flying an aircraft that were ours and be able to hold the call sign of Saber on the radio,” said Hemming. “To go from nothing to finally flying aircraft our maintainers worked on with the squadron call sign gives everyone a sense of identity and accomplishment.” The squadron, now consisting of AH-1W Super Cobra attack helicopters and UH-1Y Venom helicopters, received their first aircraft in September of 2008. Today ‘467 has nearly 20 aircraft. “It’s hard to believe it has been five years,” said Hemming. “Great feeling to come back to the squadron you helped stand up. For the guys that never left, a definite sense of accomplishment, seeing the unit from the very beginning until now.” In January 2009, the Sabers supported Marine Aircraft Group 31 during Exercise Southern Fury. During September and October in 2009 the Sabers supported Enhanced Mojave Viper at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twenty-nine Palms. “From 2010 to 2011, HMLA-467 provided humanitarian assistance and disaster relief efforts in Haiti and participated in combat operations in Afghanistan while attached to the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit,” said Capt. Shane J. Vigil, a pilot with HMLA467. In 2012, the squadron participated in drug interdiction operations and provided Hurricane Sandy disaster relief support. Aside from participating in exercises and supporting training for Marines and joint services across the world, the Sabers were the first East Coast HMLA squadron to support the 31st MEU. “What once was a few reserve aircraft on a jet base tucked in the side of the hangar is now a fully operational war-fighting unit with dedicated, hard-working Marines ready at a moment’s notice,” said Vigil. Over the past five years the sabers have thrived to make the mission just as every squadron aboard the base, and this year wasn’t any different. “Currently, HMLA-467 has a detachment supporting the 26th MEU for the second time,” said Vigil. The squadron has successfully completed previous goals and strives to complete even more. “A goal for the squadron is to continue to improve and maintain our Combat readiness,” said Hemming. In remembrance and celebration of all the squadron has accomplished in conjunction with their seasonal fall festival, the squadron hosted a birthday party for its Marines and their families. “The purpose of the event was to tie together a squadron event with this fall festival for the families and kids,” said Hemming. “It was a good chance for the families to have fun and see other squadron families.” Some of the activities the Marines and their family members participated in were, pumpkin decorating, Trunk-or-Treat and a cake cutting ceremony. “It looked like a successful event from my end,” said Hemming.

Before departing on a flight, pilots must review their aircraft’s maintenance records for previous malfunctions to ensure they take proper preventative measures during final walkthroughs to prevent similar malfunctions. During the deployment, the Marines supporting 22nd MEU will augment Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 263 (Reinforced). “The training provides the VMA with an opportunity to exercise its mission-essential tasks while integrated with the VMM in support of the MEU commander’s mission,” said Banton. While on the USS Bataan, the squadron intends to participate in work ups. The squadron will complete workups presented in different levels ranging from all complexity levels. “The squadron will be completing day and night carrier qualifications, landing sign officer training and qualifications and training and readiness progress for junior pilots,” said Banton Although these Marines are venturing off in support of a new mission, showing more excitement than fear, said Freeman. “The Marines are ready to prepare for tactical missions, wherever they are needed,” he said. While Marines supporting the 22nd MEU are out training, the other VMA-223 Marines are preparing to support the 31st MEU according to Freeman. The squadron deploys approximately every 18 months and is looking forward to another successful deployment. “I have full confidence in the training and readiness of the Marines and know that they will perform exceptionally for both the workup and the MEU,” said Banton.

Helms said that the most challenging aspect of being a career planner is making deadlines because all the material and paperwork they handle is time-sensitive. Helms said he emphasizes to all Marines that submitting paperwork early and often is the key to success. “The fact that he was selected speaks volumes about what he has already accomplished,” said Robinson. “It speaks to the expectations we all have of his future impact to our Marine Corps enlisted force shaping efforts.” Helms said his job won’t change just because he won the award or because he is being promoted. He said all career planners are there to take care of the Marines and to provide retain quality Marines and inserting valuable citizens back into the community. Although he was previously nominated for the award in the past Helms said he did not do anything to prepare for the board. “I live by what the commandant once said, ‘always bring your ‘A’ game everyday’,” said Helms. Helms stated he will continue to take care of Marines in every way possible, and will continue to guide them on the path of success.

The corpsman’s list of accomplishments extend far past his primary duties of working in the physical and occupational sections of the hospital and include working as the Single Marine Program representative for the clinic, the SMP treasurer, and the assistant safety representative for his section in the clinic. Kieff provided hands on training to at least five junior corpsman, kept accountability for medications and supplies and kept track of where money was being spent within his section as well. Kieff and the two other award recipients were presented with their awards by members of Carteret County MAC. Local community members, organizations and small businesses showed their appreciation by donating gift certificates, products, tickets and cash. The service members recognized also received a letter of recognition. “So many of the military personnel are far from home and it is encouraging for them to see that they are loved and welcomed in the local community,” said Diane Warrender, the program director for Carteret County’s Military Affairs Committee. “It is really important for them to see that they are appreciated by the community and this is just a small way that we can demonstrate this to them.” “The way I look at it is, if you’re going to be in a community, why not be a part of making the community better,” said Kieff. “Volunteering is something easy that anyone can do. I can’t wait to continue working in the community.”

Asked at Martinsville who he would like to call — if he could — to talk about the win, Wallace mentioned the NASCAR Hall of Fame nominee who was among the first African-Americans to race in NASCAR. “If Wendell Scott was alive, I would like to call him, but I can call Wendell Scott Jr.,” he said. “He sent me a text after Talladega and said just please just send a letter or a text or word back to make sure, to let me know that you’re all right, because he said he had déjà vu of his dad at Talladega.”

Nearly 50 years ago, on Dec. 1, 1963, at a dirt track in Jacksonville, Fla., the late Wendell Scott made history by becoming the first African-American to win a major NASCAR race. On Saturday at Martinsville Speedway, Darrell Wallace Jr. became the second by winning the Kroger 200 in the Camping World Truck Series. Wallace, driving a Toyota for Kyle Busch Motorsports, started third and led 96 laps, including the final 50, to get the victory in his 19th career start in the series. Like any other first-time winner, Wallace was overcome by emotion when the checkered flag came into view. “I’m speechless,” he said as he climbed from his truck. “God, I couldn’t even hold it together coming off (Turn) Four with the checkered. I still can’t.” The 20-year-old driver from Mobile, Ala., said he was proud to have scored his first win at a track not far down the road from Scott’s hometown of Danville, Va. “To do it here in the backyard of Wendell Scott means so much more, and like it’ll take tomorrow for this to finally hit me, so I might be crying again tomorrow, but this is an emotional win and a big win for all of us,” he said. Wallace is now the second member of NASCAR’s Drive for Diversity program to win a major event, joining Kyle Larson, who is part Japanese and who won a Truck race at Rockingham Speedway in April. And Wallace knows and embraces the fact that as such, he’s now in the position of being a role model for other up-andcoming young racers. “I want to be a role model and inspiration to the younger kids, and just change the sport as a whole and change it for the better; bring in a new face and just new activity into the sport, and winning helps

Darrell Wallace Jr. gives the crowd a burnout after his victory on Saturday. Wallace’s team owner Kyle Busch was proud to be a part of Saturday’s historic accomplishment. “I’m happier for Darrell than for anybody, but this is certainly a monumental day, and hopefully one that he’ll remember for a long time and can cherish,” Busch said. “The first one is always the most important one because it seems like they can just come right after that pretty easily. “We’ve seen great things out of Darrell this year, and he’s really come a long ways throughout the season.” Despite his success, Wallace is still uncertain about his 2014 racing plans, but a major victory could change that. “Winning definitely helps out with sponsorship,” he said. “I’d love to be back in a Toyota Tundra for Kyle, competing for wins each and every weekend, especially now after this. We’ve learned a lot and we’ve still got three races to learn, and to do that again next year, we should be going for that championship and a hard one to beat.”

The history-making at Martinsville Speedway, which started with Darrell Wallace Jr.’s win in Saturday’s Truck race, continued Sunday when Jeff Gordon, one of NASCAR’s all-time great drivers, broke a season-long winless streak and ran his career total to 88 Sprint Cup victories. Only Richard Petty, with 200 wins, and David Pearson, with 105, are ahead of him in all-time Cup victories. Gordon’s win also put him in a tie with his teammate Jimmie Johnson for most Martinsville wins among active drivers. They now have eight apiece, but Jeff Gordon celebrates his first win of the trail Richard Petty, with 15 wins, and Darrell Waltrip, with 11, on the all-time season in Victory Lane at Martinsville. NASCAR announced last week that beginning next season, the sanctioning body will require drivers to undergo preseason baseline testing as part of its concussion prevention and management program. “NASCAR made this decision because we think it is important to drivers’ health for doctors to have the best information and tools available in evaluating injuries,” Steve O’Donnell, NASCAR vice president of racing operations, said in making the announcement. Baseline testing will be done with an ImPACT (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) test. Drivers were encouraged to have the tests this year, but they will be required next season.

Bill Elliott finishes fourth in Late Model Veteran Sprint Cup driver Bill Elliott, who hasn’t raced in Cup since July 2012, was back behind the wheel of a race car a couple of weeks ago in a Late Model race at South Alabama Speedway in Opp, Ala., where he finished fourth in a 125-lap race won by his son, Chase Elliott. “Chase and the guys on the crew talked me into it,” Elliott said. “It was a lot of fun.” Elliott finished just ahead of Harrison Burton, the 13-year-old son of Sprint Cup driver Jeff Burton. “It felt kind of weird racing someone that young,” Elliott said, “especially when you’re 58.”

Kevin Harvick sounds off after Martinsville crash In the heat of the moment during the Kroger 200 Truck race at Martinsville, Kevin Harvick shed some light on the reasons behind his decision to leave Richard Childress Racing and move to StewartHaas Racing next season. Harvick and Ty Dillon — one of two racing grandsons of his current car owner, Richard Childress — wrecked on the track, banged fenders several times under caution and had another incident on pit road. Harvick sounded off to the media afterward, saying Dillon was a “rich kid” who hadn’t earned his place as a NASCAR driver and blamed him for the wreck. “The 3 (Dillon) just dumped me,” Harvick said. “Exactly the reason why I’m leaving RCR, because you’ve got those (Dillon) kids coming up and they’ve got no respect for what they do in this sport, and they’ve had everything fed to them with a spoon. So, I cut him slack all day and he just divebombs me in there; dumps me.” Dillon, a Truck Series regular, said Harvick had it coming. “He got sideways and then he hit the brakes and tried to brake-check me,” Dillon said, adding that he “just finished (Harvick) off.” And he was disappointed that Harvick wouldn’t discuss the incident afterward. “Can’t even face me after,” Dillon said. “I’m pretty disappointed in the things that just went down. I used to look up to that guy, but I guess he doesn’t understand the circumstances of what’s going on.” Series points leader Matt Crafton was also involved in the incident, but he said he didn’t blame Dillon. “He was just trying everything he could,”

Crafton said. “I don’t blame him.”

With win at Martinsville, Gordon finds himself within striking distance of Chase points lead Points standings and race results following the Goody’s Headache Relief Shot 500 at Martinsville Speedway:

1. MATT KENSETH (finished second) 2,294 points; leader

He went to what had been one of his worst tracks and one of Jimmie Johnson’s best, led the most laps and erased Johnson’s fourpoint lead. Now he and Johnson head to Texas Motor Speedway tied atop the standings.

2. JIMMIE JOHNSON (finished fifth) 2,294 points; leader

The odds-on favorite to win going in to Martinsville had an off day, but afterward, he was already looking ahead. “It’s going to be a dogfight to the end — the way that I would want to go racing for a championship.”

3. JEFF GORDON

(finished first) 2,267 points; behind –27 It’ll take some bad luck on both Johnson’s and Kenseth’s part, but he’s still in the running for the championship with three races to go, which is an accomplishment in itself given the fact that he was a last-minute addition to the Chase field and started out 13th in the standings.

4. KEVIN HARVICK (finished sixth) 2,266 points; behind –28

He was involved in several incidents, but survived to stay in the running for the championship. “We fought all day; got the nose banged up there and had a little leak in the radiator, so kind of nerve-wracking there.”

5. KYLE BUSCH

(finished 15th) 2,258 points; behind –36 He started third and led 12 laps early on, but wasn’t in the hunt for the win when it counted. Still, if not for a crash at Kansas — his worst track — he’d have an average Chase finish of 5.7.

6. CLINT BOWYER

(finished third) 2,239 points; behind –55 His best Chase finish so far this season probably came too late to help him win the title, but he was really hoping for a win. “I was really looking forward to this race. I thought this was one that we’d have a legit shot at winning and just come up a little short.”

7. DALE EARNHARDT JR.

(finished eighth) 2,238 points; behind –56 It was another good — but not great — Martinsville run for the popular driver. “I would rather win the race, and I have missed a lot of opportunities to win here. We finish all right; we run all right. I am really happy for my teammates when they do well, but right now we are just worried about ourselves.”

8. GREG BIFFLE

(finished ninth) 2,236 points; behind –58 His profanity-laced confrontation with Jimmie Johnson after the race left no doubt about his level of displeasure over an on-track incident between the two of them, and it came on a day when Biffle was having one of his best Martinsville runs ever. “We had a top-5 car.”

9. KURT BUSCH

(finished 18th) 2,219 points; behind –75 The winner at Martinsville in the fall of 2002 wasn’t even close this time. “We didn’t qualify well, didn’t practice well

and obviously didn’t race well. For a Chase team, we should have been much better. Our Furniture Row Chevrolet got banged up early ... but no excuses; we just didn’t have it.”

10. CARL EDWARDS (finished 12th) 2,218 points; behind –76

After some early race struggles — and incidents he took the blame for — he recovered to post a fairly respectable finish. “We were terrible, and then we actually made it back up and we were OK there at the end, but it just wasn’t good enough.”

11. JOEY LOGANO

(finished 14th) 2,209 points; behind –85 He was unable to capitalize on the chart-topping speeds he posted in Saturday’s opening practice. After a strong third-place run at Dover, followed by a fourthplace at Kansas, he’s finished outside the top 10 for three weeks straight.

12. RYAN NEWMAN

(finished 38th) 2,188 points; behind –106 A wreck with Harvick on Lap 319 doomed him just as he was getting in position for a good finish. “We didn’t start out the day too strong, but once we had track position, I felt like we had a chance to come out of it with a good finish.”

13. KASEY KAHNE

(finished 27th) 2,170 points; behind –124 Another week of misfortune, including a laps-losing wreck, seemed to cement his spot at the bottom of the Chase chart. A two-time winner in the 26-race regular season, he has just one top-10 finish in the Chase — a runner-up run at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Anyone can run, but everything changes when running for your life through an obstacal course with zombies at your heels during Cherry Point’s All Terrain Unit Competition Oct. 25 at the Piranha Pit. Eighteen teams of Marines and Sailors gathered to maneuver through the various obstacles including sled pulls, squad pushups, mud pits and, to the runners surprise, zombies. “The zombies added a new way for everyone to get into the run,” said Berna Crosby, the Marine Corps community service Semper fit special event coordinator for Cherry Point. Each team received four flags that symbolized a times bonus, that is of course if they could make it out. For every flag that crossed, the finish line was intended to cut off a minute from the teams final time, but the zombies did not make this easy. “We weren’t trying to protect any flags,” said Sgt. Joshua L. Jones, the team captain of “Suits and Boots.” “We were trying to get out of the way.” Competitors also dressed for the costume contest that coincided with the race.

Taking home the gold for the best costumes were “The Dental Sentinels”. The all-Navy team comprised of dentists from bases all over the East Coast. “We figured we’d make fun of ourselves,” said Lt. Inga M. Keithly, team captain of the Dental Sentinels. “At one point we we’re standing in the front the line and someone said we had the scariest costumes, being dentists.” In regards to the actual course competition, taking home all first, second, and third places were the Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training fielded three teams and took home 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. “The course was fun, challenging at some points, but overall a completely great time,” said Pfc. Ian Kelly, a CNATT student aboard Cherry Point. “When we had to bear crawl through the water was the best part of the course.” The CNATT instructors keep the students in top physical condition, said Pfc. Vincent R. Moschelle, a CNATT student on the first place team. The course built some esprit de corps with our brothers in arms, said Jones. “The best part was the camaraderie,” said Keithly.”We have males and females, both

officer and enlisted, from different dental clinics coming together, just making it a fun event.” Even before taking all three award places, CNATT felt very confident in themselves

and their ability to win. “The (Commanding Officer) said he wanted gold, and we said ‘not a problem’,” said Moschelle.

Halloween is a day for children to be whatever they want for one night. It is an exciting day of tricks, treats and sometimes scares, but one cannot forget about safety while trick-or-treating. Cherry Point’s 2013 Halloween trick-or-treat night, will take place tonight from 5-9 p.m. in housing areas aboard the air station. Candy, decorations and costumes are all potential hazards for children on Halloween that are often overlooked. Child safety is essential when trick-or-treating. It is the responsibility of parents or guardians of trick-or-treaters to make sure that the experience is safe and enjoyable. To ensure the safety of all trick-or-treaters aboard the air station, Cherry Point Police, the Provost Marshall’s Office Operations Division and Cherry Point Fire Department will be on hand providing security, candy distribution and candy screenings. The Security and Emergency Services directorate personnel will be at the event as well with “McGruff the Crime Dog to hand out and screen candy from 5-7 p.m. Screenings will be conducted by the SES with an Incident Command Vehicle, at the Fitness Center on Alexander Drive in Nugent Cove and by the Fire Department in a Fire Truck at the playground on Jefferson Drive in Grants Landing. Walking patrols will be roaming the communities as well for extra support. With safety as the main priority this Halloween, parents are instructed to only allow trick-or-treaters to carry props

that are flexible and not allow them to trick-or-treat with anything that resemble real items such as weapons. Before allowing children to trick-or-treat, parents should inform children to avoid strangers and poorly lit areas. Children should always carry a light source and be accompanied by an adult and travel in groups. Well fitting shoes, flame-retardant and non dragging costumes are recommended and trick-or-treaters are advised to walk on sidewalks at all times and cross roads at designated areas. Community members are encouraged to look out for each other and report any suspicious behavior. Visit the Halloween trick-or-treating section of http://safetycenter. navy.mil/ for more safety tips.

Policy for free classified ads

Providing free advertising for business ventures is prohibited by government printing regulations and conflicts with the civilian publisher’s advertising (which pays for printing and distributing The Windsock.) Therefore, as stated on the free ad request form, free classified ads “... must not be of a commercial or business nature.” Examples of commercial or business ads include baby-sitting, property for rent by owner, and yard work. Such advertisements may only be run as paid ads. Likewise, ads promoting fund raising, activities sponsored by any organization, or events for which a fee is charged, are also not authorized under the free ad provision.
