MASS-1 updates aviation command, control system

October 24, 2013

MWSS-274 Marines take off to ITX

LANCE CPL. JOSHUA R. HEINS MCAS CHERRY POINT

Communications between warfighters on the ground and the wing Marines who support them just got better thanks to a upgrade to Marine Air Support Squadron 1’s Common Aviation Command and Control System earlier this month. “Previously, the equipment that individual units used was not standardized,” said 1st Lt. Andrew W. Estko, Data Platoon officer-incharge. “Units used basically an amalgamation of various laptops and different software which varied from unit to unit.” The upgraded system is a cohesive suite of computers, software and support equipment that will be standardized throughout the Marine Corps. The system was first fielded to MASS-1 in August 2012. The update is being conducted Marine Corps-wide to standardize the equipment. Other Marine Corps units scheduled to receive the update are Marine Air Control Squadron 2, Marine Air Support Squadron 3, Marine Air Support Squadron 6, and Marine Tactical Air Command Squadron 28. Many of the functions operators conducted manually are now made automatically with the new update, said Lance Cpl. Kolby M. Phorp, a systems administrator with MASS-1. MASS-1 has and will be opening their doors and hosting training for Marines in the aviation command and control electronics maintenance, air control and support, and air traffic control military occupational specialties. The units that will be receiving the training include MACS-2, MTACS-28, MASS-3, MASS-6. “The training was monumental, it made it so we knew more than just the basics of the system making us more proficient,” said Phorp.

Throughout the week, MWSS-274 has sent approximately 250 of their Marines to support the training evolution.

PFC. CAYCE NEVERS MCAS CHERRY POINT

Approximately 250 Marines from Marine Wing Support Squadron 274 departed Cherry Point Oct. 15-17 for Integrated Training Exercise in Twentynine Palms, Calif. The squadron will spend approximately five weeks training for future deployments. “The unit is pushing out a detachment to Operation Enduring Freedom in the early part of next year,” said Lt. Col. Sean C. Killeen, commanding officer of MWSS-274. “This ITX is an opportunity to go out and do a mission rehearsal exercise in preparation.”

The training will encompass five major areas. One area of focus will be basic warfighting, consisting of shooting, moving and communicating. Another will focus on aviation ground support, consisting of air field services, engineering and transportation. The third focus will be air base ground defense, where Marines will provide security for a forward operating base or a Fuel, Arm and Refueling Point. Another focus will be base recovery after attack, where Marines will rebuild an airfield and get it back up and operational after an attack or incident. The final focus will consist of command and control for all of the previous focuses.

“ITX is geared toward training in each of those areas to make sure we are proficient and ready to go to the fight,” said Killeen. “The Marines have a chance to conduct their basic warfighting skills.” For the Marines who are a part of ITX but not going to be deploying next year, this training helps them to build their proficiency in their job. “We can do similar type of training here on the East coast,” said 1st. Lt. Seth M. Prior, communications officer with MWSS-274. “But we don’t get a lot of time with the level of integration See ITX page A3

Lance Cpl. Zachery C. Schram receives the 1st place award from Col. Chris Pappas III, the commanding officer of Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point during the Chef of the Year competition Oct. 18.

Marines with Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 252 conducted aerial refueling of a CH-53E Super Stallion with Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 464 Monday. The aerial refueling was conducted using the extension of hoses from a KC-130J Hercules to which the CH-53 connected through precise aerial maneuvering. The KC-130J is capable of holding 60,000 pounds of fuel in its main tank and an additional 24,000 pounds in an auxiliary fuselage tank. The training allowed HMH-464 pilots to practice getting close and hooking up to the KC-130J, and for VMGR-252 to practice joining up and getting their flight timing more precise. The aerial refueling was part of a training build up in preparation for the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Units upcoming deployment. “This training was really important for both squadrons,” said Capt. James Rivais, a KC-130J pilot with VMGR-252. “HMH-464 was focused more on flying and we are the controllers in the sky. We say where to be, when to be there because we supply the fuel.” For more than 50 years VMGR-252’s KC-130J aircraft have provided aerial refueling and aviation-delivered ground refueling of various aircraft, armored vehicles, and Humvees. Marines compete, crown Chef of Year LANCE CPL. UNIQUE B. ROBERTS MCAS CHERRY POINT

Throughout the year, chefs have battled in the Chef of the Quarter competitions for a chance to participate in the annual Cherry Point Chef of the Year competition. The four winners of this year’s quarterly competitions came together Oct. 18 to once again put their skills to the test and try to walk away with the honor of named Cherry Point’s top chef. Louisiana seafood gumbo and coconut cake were the dishes prepared by Lance Cpl. Zachery C. Schram, the winner of this year’s competition. Schram stated this is his second time in the competition, and he is thankful for the opportunity to show the skills he has learned over years. Usually in a competition, the contestants have to adhere to the recipe of the Armed Forces recipe index, but for the Chef of the Year Competition the contestant can put their own twist on the recipes. The competition allows the Marines to exhibit their knowledge on their Military Occupational Specialty. “The contestants can actually branch out and use some creativity when they prepare their meals unlike previous competitions,” said Staff Sgt. Joseph E. Raccio, a food service specialist with Marine Wing Headquarters Squadron 2. “They are allowed to use other recipes they find on the internet, or their favorite recipe they saw on a television show.” See CHEF page A3

News Briefs Competition-In-Arms Program The Marine Corps is seeking Marines to participate in the 2014 Competition-In-Arms Program. The primary objective of the Competition-In-Arms Program is to stimulate interest and desire for self-improvement in marksmanship and to enhance proficiency in the Marine Corps in the use of individual small arms. Participating units may send individuals or entire teams to division matches. In order to compete for team trophies, units will enter teams comprised of a minimum of one firing officer, one sergeant or below who has never shot division matches before, and two Marines of any rank, at least one of which must be enlisted. Participants may also fulfill their annual rifle and pistol qualification training requirements. For more information about the FY14 CompetitionIn-Arms Program, read Marine Administrative Message 547/13.

Uniform board seeks input The Marine Corps Uniform Board is seeking feedback from active-duty and reserve Marines’ about three uniformrelated issues. A survey was sent to sergeants major across the Marine Corps on Oct. 14. This survey was to be distributed to Marines with feedback sought through Oct. 25. The three issues to be evaluated include the adoption of universal, unisex dress and service caps; authorization for females to wear partial multiple braids, or microbraids, in uniform; and a modification to the existing supplemental clothing allowance. Completed surveys will be consolidated and sent to the Uniform Board by designated command representatives by Oct. 25. The board is scheduled to meet Oct. 29.

OxyELITE Pro pulled from shelves The Department of Defense has ordered the removal of OxyELITE Pro products from base exchanges after an outbreak of acute hepatitis and liver failure was tied to the dietary supplement in Hawaii this year. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration advised consumers to stop using any supplement product labeled OxyELITE Pro in health advisories Oct. 8. OxyELITE Pro is distributed by USPlabs LLC of Dallas, Texas, nation-wide. The company voluntarily stopped distribution and is cooperating in an FDA investigation, according to the federal agency. OxyELITE Pro has been identified as a common link in 29 non-viral hepatitis cases in Hawaii. Symptoms of hepatitis may include fever, fatigue, joint pain, yellow eyes, jaundice, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dark urine, and clay or gray-colored bowel movements. Sailors, Marines and their families who believe they have been harmed by using a dietary supplement should contact their health care practitioner. Healthcare professionals and patients are encouraged to report adverse events or side effects related to the use of this product to the FDA’s MedWatch Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting Program: www.fda.gov/MedWatch/ report.htm.

Plain truth: God does exist LT. CMDR. CHARLES W. JOHNSON MARINE AIRCRAFT GROUP 14

If I started this article by writing: “God exists,” I’m pretty sure someone would mentally respond: “Well, you’re a chaplain; of course you’re going to say that. Chaplains have to believe in God.” It’s true. I am a chaplain and a Catholic priest. Nevertheless, I don’t have to believe in God. By that I mean, it’s not an absolute necessity for me, because I know he exists. And I can prove it. I’m hoping that by the end of this article you’ll be able to prove it to yourself as well. You won’t need any expensive scientific equipment. I only ask that you look out the window, glance at a tree with some leaves on it and notice one thing: the leaves are moving. Why do they move? It doesn’t take long for anyone to figure out that it’s the wind blowing by that makes the leaves move. Which brings us to the next step: why is the wind moving? Now here I admit it might take a little more observation and thought to see our way forward, but still it becomes clear the wind moves because of the changes in certain other things: for instance, the temperature of the air, the phase of the moon perhaps, the presence of water molecules and dust, and so forth. So, thanks to the movement of the earth and the things on it and around it, we get movement in the air. Why then does the earth move? Mainly because of the sun and the other heavenly bodies. At this point, to spare you the tedium of expanding

this line of thought in too much detail, we can arrive at one very important conclusion: starting with a leaf, everything is moving. All these things are moved by something else. However, there cannot be an infinite chain of these things. Why? Because if it was an infinite chain, there would be no beginning to it. If there’s no beginning, then there was never anything to start all this moving of one thing by another. But we know that it did begin, right? How so? We just looked out the window and saw the motion with our own eyes. So, my dear readers, it is impossible to escape the conclusion that there must be something at the beginning of all the things which we can see or know that moved them all in the beginning, but which is not moved itself. We are left, at the end of all these thoughts, with this marvelous thing: a mover of all things that is itself unmoved. Wouldn’t that mean something completely unchangeable, completely formed and perfect? Something that every other thing in existence depends on and is infinitely inferior to? Why, yes it would. You see, the unmoved mover is just a strange version of an otherwise very familiar name: God. You didn’t even have to go to an expensive university, buy a microscope, or anything like that to prove to yourself that he exists. You merely had to look at See TRUTH page A3

Cpl. David P. Osborne joined the Marine Corps as a tropospheric scatter radio multi-channel equipment operator, but after becoming a corporal, he volunteered for a job to challenge himself to the deepest depths of his abilities as a Marine Combat Instructor for Water Survival. Osborne is now the assistant chief instructor at Cherry Point’s combat pool where he teaches Marines water survival basics. He also teaches the intermediate course, which prepares Marines for amphibious situations in garrison and combat environments such as helicopter casting, beach storming tactics or open water training in the deep sea. Having to teach so many Marines at once leads to high levels of stress for Osborne and other water survival instructors. “The most challenging part of the job is keeping accountably of all the Marines on the pool deck at all times,” said Osborne. “Having eyes on everyone is key. You have no way of knowing who or when someone will go down.” Helping Marines advance their careers by passing higher levels of swim qualifications is a benefit of the job, he said. There is a great sense of pride that comes with being an MCIWS instructor. Osborne looks forward to the chance to re-enlist, and the opportunity to pick up sergeant and further lead Marines. “Being a corporal allows me to have an effect on Marines,” said Osborne. “Being able to become a sergeant will allow me to have a greater impact on more Marines.”

we get from ITX.” This training will help prepare Marines to perform their job in the field while under pressure of possible attacks. “Nothing can really prepare you for what it is to get hit by an (Improvised Explosive Device) or an ambush except to recreate it as best as you can” said Lance Cpl. Nathaniel P. Richardson, a water support technician with MWSS-274. “In ITX, you basically have to live what you are going to live inevitably when you deploy. It puts you in situations that are unfavorable.” With five weeks of training ahead, Marines will practice their military occupational specialty skills as well as retrain their basic warfighting skills and solidify the statement, every Marine a rifleman, said . “This will be the first time the Marines execute the missions that they have been working hard for over the past year on,” said Killeen. “The Marines will use this as a capstone advantage to pull everything together and train one last time before we push the detachment out.”

“Aerial refueling flights are important because they help extend the combat radius of rotary and fixed-wing aircraft,” said Master Sgt. Jared Stillwell, a KC-130J crew chief with VMGR-252. This training is conducted 2-3 times per week, said Rivais. But training with helicopters is only conducted every other week so it is vital to the squadron’s readiness. Stillwell said this training was a success. There were no problems and all scheduled tasks were completed.

UPDATE from page A1 “The foundation for the current training is the new equipment training that occurred in 2012 when CAC2S was originally fielded,” said Estko. “This training will increase Marines proficiency with the system and provide enhanced knowledge they can then teach to their Marines. In addition, this training will serve as a refresher course for some members who recently returned from Operation Enduring Freedom.”

CHEF from page A1 After thorough planning and determining the meal they want to prepare, the contestants begin meal preparation on the day of the competition. “The work that it takes to prepare a meal is much more complicated than it seems,” said Gunnery Sgt. Galia N. Cook, the galley captain of Cherry Point’s Mess Hall. “There is a lot of blood, sweat and tears that goes into what they do.” After the judges indulged in the meals they gave their thoughts on the food. Lt. Col. Charles J. Basham, the commanding officer of Headquarters and Headquarters squadron, said the food was well prepared. “They put in a lot of hard work and a lot of long hours overall,” said Cook. “It was an awesome feeling watching them perform their art and I am very proud of my Marines.”

VMR-1 C-9s fill multiple missions

LANCE CPL. JOSHUA R. HEINS MCAS CHERRY POINT

Marine Transport Squadron 1 keeps two aces in the hole giving them the advantage of speed when transporting very important passengers. The C-9B Skytrain is a military version of the McDonnell Douglas DC-9-32; and VMR-1 has the only two in the Marine Corps. The squadron began using the aircraft in 1976 when its primary mission was the transportation of the Marine Corps Band and other VIPs. Since then, these aircraft have transformed and adapted to meet the unique needs of today’s Marine Corps. Modifications made to the aircraft include updates in avionics and an extra center fuel tank to increase the range of the aircraft. “The C-9 is a regional jet that we have morphed into a global jet,” said Maj. Edward J. Jorge, the C-9 branch officer in charge and pilot. “With these modifications and extensive planning these jets are doing a lot more than their designed to do.” The C-9s have kept their initial mission

of VIP transportation but recently have expanded their duty with supporting many other operations such as supporting the school of advanced warfare and the black sea rotational force. In the past year the squadron has used the aircraft to travel anywhere from Houston to Vietnam and countless locations in between. Only active duty military handpicked and board-selected pilot the aircraft, said Jorge. They all come from different backgrounds and usually hold the rank of major or above. It is not widely known that the Marine Corps maintains these two converted civilian aircraft. The fact that VMR-1 maintains and flies these aircraft is unique to the squadron. “The C-9 still keeps its original purpose of transportation, but now it fills the gap that the KC-130J Hercules cannot as a faster transport,” said Cpl. Garrick W. Pelletier, a C-9 crew chief. “We can’t take as much as a C-130, but we will get there faster,” said Cpl. Philip J. Lefever, a C-9 loadmaster.

The aircraft supports the Marine Corps’ need for faster transportation, said Lefever. There are different configurations of cargo and passengers that the C-9 is capable of carrying. The C-9 is also a much more comfort-

able and smooth ride for its passengers, according to Pelletier. VMR-1 has upheld the reputation of the C-9 for the last 37 years and plans to do so as long as the aircraft is in service.

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Marines and Sailors with Combat Logistics Battalion 24, 2nd Marine Logistics Group participated in a field exercise here Oct. 16 to 18. The exercise gave different sections of the battalion the opportunity to bring their specialties together as they trained in preparation for an upcoming Marine Expeditionary Unit deployment. “This is our first field exercise as a brand new staff for the CLB,” said Maj. Chad E. Roberts, the executive officer of CLB-24. “If you use the ‘crawl, walk, run’ analogy, we’re still crawling. We’re trying to establish a battle rhythm for a deployment as a [logistics combat element], but that’s still about a year away.” The battalion operations included water purification, vehicle convoys and helicopter support team, or HST, exercises. The operations tied in directly with each other and were held together by the Marines at the command operations center, who tracked the movements of the

platoons and kept constant communications with them. “This is step one, so to speak,” said 1st Lt. Thomas J. Heemer, the commander of Landing Support Platoon, CLB-24. “It gives us the opportunity to get out here and start integrating all the things we do as individual platoons. The work we do is pretty impressive as landing support, engineer and communications Marines, but we make our money when we bring it together.” The water purification specialists produced 500 gallons of clean water, which the motor transport section moved to LS Plt. to be airlifted along with an 8,000-pound beam to simulate supplies during an HST. “It’s definitely an equipment and [personnel] test,” said Sgt. Parker S. Radcliffe, a combat engineer with CLB-24. “Being first response to natural disasters around the U.S., we have to know that the Marines know how to use the equipment and that the equipment works.”

A remembrance was held Tuesday and Wednesday at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune’s Memorial Gardens to honor Marines, Sailors and Soldiers who lost their lives during bombing of the Marine barracks in Beirut, Lebanon. Oct. 23, 1983, at approximately 6:20 a.m., 241 Marines, Sailors and Soldiers were killed and hundreds wounded during the devastating terrorist attack. Two trucks filled with explosives ran through the fence of the barracks before detonating and causing one of the

deadliest days for the Marine Corps since the battle of Iwo Jima. “There are many lessons to be learned and passed on to future generations of Marines,” said Sgt. Maj. David G. Eldridge, Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron sergeant major. “You can never let your guard down or take anything for granted, regardless of your status or the rules of engagement,” said Eldridge. After the initial attack, then President Ronald Reagan made a televised address to the public about the incident. He spoke about why Marines were in Lebanon and why

A thick, black cloud rises from the shattered headquarters of Battalion Landing Team 1st Bn., 8th Marines, the ground combat element of the 22nd Marine Amphibious Unit. Only seconds before, a suicide bomber drove an explosive-laden truck into the building, killing 220 Marines, 18 Sailors and three Soldiers. “There are many lessons to be learned and passed on to future generations of Marines,” said Sgt. Maj. David G. Eldridge, Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron sergeant major. “You can never let your guard down or take anything for granted, regardless of your status or the rules of engagement.”

“Marines went on guard duty that day in heaven and will not be forgotten.” — Dave Madaras, attack survivor. such an attack happened. Reagan went on to say there were approximately 1,600 Marines that were part of a multinational force in place to help the people of Lebanon restore order and stability to the land. Dave Madaras, a private first class at the time of the attack, said he remembered waking up to get breakfast when the explosion happened, according to an interview with Marine Corps Combat Service Support Schools in October. “Words in the English language can’t even begin to describe the magnitude of the blast,” said Madaras. “I woke up and immediately felt the concussion and was completely blasted by a wave of heat that came over me.” The memorial at Camp Lejeune was set up to remember every single victim and to ensure that they are never forgotten. “One thing that is amazing is that in the Marine Corps hymn it says that Marines guard the gates of heaven,” said Madaras. “A lot of Marines went on guard duty that day in heaven and will not be forgotten.” Eldridge says it is important for Marine noncommissioned officers to learn about the incident to ensure something like that doesn’t happen again. “Many things could have been done better by all levels of leadership involved that could have possibly prevented the catastrophe,” said Eldridge. “We owe it to each other as Marines now, and we owe it to the Marines who experienced it and mostly importantly we owe it to the memory of all the Marines who gave their life for their country on foreign soil that day.”

U.S. Marines display aircraft for Philippine Air Force families LANCE CPL. ANNE HENRY III MARINE EXPEDITIONARY FORCE / MARINE CORPS INSTALLATIONS PACIFIC

A family views U.S. Marine aircraft at Clark Air Base, Pampanga, Republic of the Philippines Oct. 6 during Amphibious Landing Exercise 2014. Aircraft on display included the KC-130J Hercules, MV-22B Osprey and AH-1W Super Cobra. PHIBLEX 14 ensures Philippine and U.S. forces are capable of integrating effectively to conduct humanitarian assistance and regional security missions. The aircraft are part of 3d Marine Expeditionary Brigade’s aviation combat element. 3d MEB is part of III Marine Expeditionary Force.

Capt. Earl Shaw explains the capabilities of the AH-1W Super Cobra to a family at Clark Air Base, Pampanga, Republic of the Philippines Oct. 6 during Amphibious Landing Exercise 2014. Aircraft on display included the KC130 Hercules, MV-22B Osprey and AH-1W Super Cobra and gave spectators information on what the aircraft have to offer. PHIBLEX 14 demonstrates the commitment of the U.S. and Republic of the Philippines to mutual security and their long-time partnership. CLARK AIR Base, PAMPANGA, Republic of the Philippines - U.S. Marines with Third Marine Expeditionary Brigade’s aviation combat element showcased aircraft at Clark Air Base, Pampanga, Republic of the Philippines Oct. 5 during Amphibious Landing Exercise 2014. PHIBLEX 14 demonstrates the commitment of the U.S. and Philippines to mutual security and their long time partnership, while also ensuring that both forces are capable of integrating effectively to conduct humanitarian assistance and regional security missions. Third Marine Expeditionary Brigade’s ACE during PHIBLEX 14 consists of Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 167, Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron152, Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 262, Marine Wing Support Squadron 172 and Marine Air Control Squadron 4. Third MEB is part of III Marine Expeditionary Force. The display allowed Philippine Air Force members and their families a chance to view the KC-130J Hercules, MV22B Osprey and AH-1W Super Cobra. Guests were allowed to tour the aircraft while U.S. Marines gave them information about their capabilities. “This gives the members of the PAF the opportunity to bring their families and members of the community out here to see what the U.S. Marine Corps has to offer,” said Col. John M. Peck, 3d MEB chief of staff. “We want to give back to a community that has been wonderful hosts over the years.” The display offered time for the Marines and spectators to exchange ideas as well as goals. “I feel that because of this training and the exchange of ideas, that our two countries will be prepared to work together,” said Jean-Paul Boquiren, an event spectator. “I feel that through PHIBLEX, our two countries will (continue to) work very well together.” It is critical that both forces be able to respond rapidly to natural disasters, according to Peck. “We are in our 63rd year of our alliance with the Philippines,” said Peck. “By routinely working with the Armed Forces of the Philippines, we increase our interoperability, allowing us to rapidly respond to regional contingencies. “Training in different areas exposes us and our counterparts to the unique capabilities that each of our services provide, thereby increasing the overall capability of our forces should we be called upon to work together in the future,” he added. The day left the spectators happy, looking forward to future experiences throughout PHIBLEX 14, according to Capt. Sean Walker, an AH-1W Super Cobra Pilot with Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 167. “We have been flying in this area for the past few weeks, so it was a pleasure to show the local population what we have to offer, up close and personal,” said Walker. “PHIBLEX 14 has been a positive experience for me and has definitely been something to learn from.”

Kissie Sykes haunts Cherry Point PFC. VICTOR A. ARRIAGA MCAS CHERRY POINT

A popular legend among personnel at Cherry Point is the ghost of Kissie Sykes, a woman who was buried here with her two children long before the air station existed. Some believe they now haunt the air station. According to the most popular story, early in the construction of Cherry Point’s flight line Kissie’s gravesite was moved in order to make room for the project. The legend states that she was separated from her children in the process and she is now said to be forever searching for them. Early one morning in 1986, Jeff Styron woke up to start his day and headed to work like he had been doing every day since he started his job in the Resident Officer in Charge of Construction Office in 1984. Styron said it was around 3 a.m. when he and his coworkers were replacing the center mat of the flight line, the intersection where the four runways meet, when they heard something eerie and out of place, something that couldn’t be real. “It sounded like kids were playing at a playground which was the oddest thing,” said Styron. “We brushed it off at first because we thought, ‘Why would there be kids playing this early on a flight line?’” Styron said he dismissed the laughter and forgot about the whole incident for almost 30 years, never thinking twice about it, until he read a blog online that made the hair on the back of his neck stand up. “I was reading about a woman named Kissie Sykes,” he said. “It said that she haunts the flight line and when she is around you can hear children playing or laughing. I had never even heard of Kissie Sykes until then and it knocked me back.” But did Styron really experience a visit from Cherry Point’s infamous Kissie Sykes? Or was the laughter he heard that of her children, who are rumored to haunt Cherry Point while their mother, Sykes, endlessly searches for them? Brie Lehew, the air station’s historian, says that the Sykes’ were among three families the air station purchased land from prior to its completion. “The Sykes, the Bryants and the Buys were all families the air station purchased land from, so the tale of Kissie Sykes has been around for quite some time,” said Lehew. “I’ve been to her gravesite myself and it’s chilling to look at.” Syke’s grave is located in one of 13 Cherry Point graveyards. She is now buried in the graveyard closest to the gas chamber aboard the air station. She is said to roam the flight line, housing areas and other parts of the air station searching for her children. “A few years ago we had reports from Marines at Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting who were pretty shaken up after

they said something jumped on their truck that resembled a woman,” said Lehew. “The fact that these were grown Marines who were terrified makes me believe it was her.” Lehew says that most reports regarding the unexplained have come from Marines at ARFF who work night shifts. Cpl. Charles Mefford works as a rescue man at ARFF and claims to have experienced a visit from Sykes in September of this year when the trucks started turning themselves on. “Me and a few other Marines were out near the flight line during our shift when the trucks started turning on and the doors started opening by themselves,” said Mefford. “We went to check it out and when we turned them off, others started turning on. It really freaked us out.”

Mefford said that he believed it was Sykes after hearing stories about her prior to his experience. “There are a lot of stories about Sykes and pilots refusing to land after seeing a woman walk across the flight line,” said Mefford. “The one that really freaked me out was the story about the lance corporal who was admitted into a mental institution after they found him curled in a ball by her gravesite saying ‘She wants her kids.” Tales of Kissie Sykes continue to haunt the air station as one of its most famous urban legends. “Cherry Point has a lot of history and continues to make it,” said Lehew. “The tale of Sykes is pretty freaky because we just don’t know.”

New Bern hosts 23rd annual GhostWalk PFC. GRACE L. WALADKEWICS MCAS CHERRY POINT

The ghosts of New Bern will come to life Oct. 24-26 for the 23rd year in a row to tell their stories and the tales of the city’s rich history to anyone brave enough to listen. The New Bern GhostWalk is an annual event hosted by the New Bern Historical Society. The walk offers patrons the chance to tour 17 locations around the city, at the same time learning the history and hearing stories of the ghosts who supposedly haunt those sites including homes, gardens and cemeteries. This year’s “Haunted Housewives of New Bern” theme will be acted out by more than 50 actors and actresses while the tours will be conducted with the help of more than 180 volunteers. “This theme was chosen because it felt current and it gave a lot of material to draw from the characters,” said Lynne Harakal, the executive director of the New Bern Historical Society. ”The event is family friendly and in addition to the ghost venues, historic churches and a synagogue are open to tour.” The event began 23 years ago as a night time tour of the city’s historic homes. Over time, the tour has evolved and ghosts have been added to

create the frightful tour focused on the town’s ghosts and their stories, said Harakal. Rev. Ethel Belle Sampson, an actress in the event, is a descendent of Mary Ann Starkey, a freed black woman who worked with Abraham Galloway and the United States Colored Troops in an effort to gain freedom for slaves. “I am so excited to be involved in this historical event, volunteering is in my blood,” said Sampson. “It is so important for people to learn the history and to experience a taste of those who came before them.” Some of the ghosts who will return to life include Josephine Bradham, Fanny Taylor and Bayard Wootten along with many more distraught and unsettled souls. Ghostwalk tickets can be purchased at participating locations or online at http://newbernhistorical.org/ghostwalk/. Adult tickets are $20 on the day of the events, active duty, dependents and students with current identification cards are $10, children 3-12 years old are $5 and children 3 and under are free. Ghostwalk tickets are redeemable for any of the three evenings. Tours will begin tonight and will be conducted from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. and on Oct. 25 and 26 from 5:30-9:30 p.m.

National Teen Driver Safety Week LANCE CPL. JOSHUA R. HEINS MCAS CHERRY POINT

For most teens, receiving their driver’s license is an exciting and sought after experience. However, for concerned parents it can be a hair-raising and anxiety packed next few years. According to teendriversource.org, teens are four times more likely to get into an accident than older drivers, and the leading cause of death among teens is motor-vehicle accidents. This week is National Teen Driver Safety Week. It promotes safe driving and passenger behavior, and provides information for parents to teach their children safe driving practices. “The most important thing that parents can do is teach their teens the basics, said John M. Ruth the safety and occupational health specialist for the air station. “Every time you’re in the car with your kids, take the time to teach them something new. A step parents can take to keep their teens safe is leading by example, turning every car ride into a learning experience, and pointing out how they handled a driving

situation is essential to their development. Parents are typically their child’s prime influence regarding driving practices. “Practice, practice, and practice until it becomes almost automatic, said Chief Warrant Officer James H. Von Plueren, father of two teenage children and the telephone communications officer of G-6. “Experience behind the wheel is the best thing for newer drivers. Allowing time for a teen to practice while a parent supervises is another great way to prepare them for the road. The amount of experience junior operators have behind the wheel is a key factor in their safety once they begin driving on their own. According to teendriversource.org, 89 percent of teens have reported seeing other teen drivers on cell phones, 71 percent have seen teen drivers driving upset on the phone, and 53 percent have seen others using other hand held devices such as music devices or texting while driving. “While driving with someone else in their car, teens need to understand that they are not just responsible for themselves, said Von Plueren. “Drivers have the lives of their passengers in their hands.

Jamie McMurray takes checkered flag at Talladega — second non-Chase driver Sprint Cup victory in a row

Harold Hinson for Chevrolet

Jimmie Johnson, driving the No. 48 Chevrolet, moved to first place in the Sprint Cup standings with his 13th-place finish at Talladega.

hardt Jr., with plenty of drafting help in the form of Austin Dillon, was about to make a move on McMurray off Turn Two, thirdrunning Dillon and fourth-running Ricky Stenhouse Jr. wrecked. That brought out the caution flag and sealed the win for McMurray as NASCAR set the finishing order by how the drivers were running when the yellow flag was displayed. Behind the leaders, Jimmie Johnson, with a 13th-place finish, took the points lead from Matt Kenseth, who finished 20th after leading 32 laps earlier in the race. Other than the last-lap crash, the race was far from typical for Talladega. There was no “Big One” crash, and instead of running in a big pack in the closing laps, the leaders wound up running single-file in the outside groove, and essentially finished where they were running when the race was flagged for the Stenhouse-Dillon crash. Earnhardt, who finished second, said he didn’t make a move earlier because he feared no one would go with him and he’d drop to the back of the pack. “I was in perfect position to be patient and wait as long as I wanted to,” Earnhardt said. “So that’s why we didn’t go any sooner than that. I just can’t anticipate a caution coming out every single time we run at Talladega race on the last lap, so I just assumed it would go to checkered, and was planning my move on the back straightaway.” McMurray said he was doing all he could to keep Earnhardt at bay. “When I got to the lead, I was trying to enter [the corners] a little bit lower so we weren’t using so much race track, so that if everyone behind me would follow, maybe the bottom line wouldn’t develop and move up as fast,” he said. “Every time I entered lower, I would get away from [Earnhardt],

Jamie McMurray celebrates his victory in the Camping World RV Sales 500 at Talladega. and I feel like he was getting more of a run on me off the corner. “As those laps counted down, I was kind of trying to do something different each lap so that he couldn’t prepare for it.” When the running order was sorted out, Stenhouse finished a Cup-career-best third, followed by Paul Menard. Chase contender Kyle Busch was fifth, with non-Chase drivers David Ragan, David Gilliland and Martin Truex Jr. taking positions six through eight. All told, six of the top eight spots went to non-Chase drivers, a reversal of the usual scenario in the Chase.

‘Wild card’ oval tracks challenge drivers with back-to-back Sprint Cup races A standard deck of playing cards has two jokers, much like the typical Chase for the Sprint Cup has two “wild cards” in the form of back-to-back races at Talladega Superspeedway and Martinsville Speedway. Those two tracks — one the longest oval on the Cup circuit and the other the shortest — have little in common other than their propensity to set the stage for crashes that can quickly scramble the finishing order and thereby bring about great change in the Cup points standings. Two Chase leaders — Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon — are among the best ever at Martinsville, with Johnson owning eight wins, including one there in April, and Gordon seven. On the other hand, Matt Kenseth, who lost the points lead to Johnson at Talladega, has never won at Martinsville and has an average finish of 15.8. His best Martinsville finish came back in 2002, when he was runner-up to Bobby Labonte. But since moving to Joe Gibbs Racing for the start of this season, where he’s a teammate to four-time Martinsville winner Denny Hamlin, he has an all-new outlook about the tricky, paper-clip-shaped track nestled in the picturesque Virginia foothills. He’s particularly encouraged after his run there in April, where he wound up 14th,

Martinsville Speedway track map but felt he was capable of a much higher finish. “We got off a little bit in the middle of the race, and then we pitted at the end and lost some spots, but I thought we were going to finish sixth or seventh if we wouldn’t have pitted,” he said, pointing out that he led more laps in that race (96) than he had in all of his previous Martinsville starts (73). “I thought we had a good car there.” Kenseth said that while he’s not generally considered a short-track specialist, his results this year are showing that previous performances while he was driving for Roush Fenway Racing are no indication of the way he’ll run this year at Gibbs.

Crew chief Todd Parrott suspended indefinitely

Harold Hinson for Chevrolet

In winning the Camping World RV Sales 500 at Talladega Superspeedway on Sunday, Jamie McMurray became the secondstraight non-Chase driver to win a Sprint Cup race this season. It was the first time since 2006 that non-Chase drivers won back-to-back Chase races. In ’06, Tony Stewart and Brian Vickers won at Kansas and Talladega, respectively, then Stewart won another two straight, at Atlanta and Texas. McMurray’s win, his first since 2010 at Charlotte and the seventh of his career, came a week after Brad Keselowski surged to victory at Charlotte Motor Speedway. McMurray won at Talladega from an unlikely position — holding the lead halfway through the final lap. Just as it looked as if eventual second-place finisher Dale Earn-

NOTEBOOK

“You look at tracks that you feel are some of your worst, and then you look at some you feel are your best, and if I just look through the last five weeks, I think we’ve had our best finishes at the two tracks I thought would have been our worst,” he said. “And some of our worst finishes so far are at the tracks I thought would have been our best. “You don’t know what’s going to happen. It’s been a fun year because [Joe Gibbs Racing] has made me run a lot better at tracks where we usually don’t run good at. “Hopefully, Martinsville will be one of those.” Gordon, on the other hand, said he believes his past performances at Martinsville are an indication that he has the potential to shine on Sunday, if he and his Hendrick Motorsports team can fix a few weak spots. “I’m excited about Martinsville,” he said. “I love that track. We always run well. “We’ve got to figure out how to lead as much in the second half of the race as we do in the first half. That’s where our focus is. You know there are going to be some classic battles there. It’s short-track racing, hard-braking, side-by-side; it’s probably one of the toughest places that we race at and certainly plenty of contact.”

Veteran Sprint Cup crew chief Todd Parrott faces an uncertain future after he was indefinitely suspended from NASCAR last week for violating the sanctioning body’s Substance Abuse Policy. Parrott has 31 career victories and was working as crew chief for the No. 43 Ford driven by Aric Almirola at Richard Petty Motorsports before his suspension. Sammy Johns, the team’s vice president of operations and competition, took over the crew chief duties of the No. 43, which started on the pole at Talladega and finished 22nd. Johns said in a statement that he and his team support NASCAR’s substance abuse policies. “We have an expectation of all RPM employees to conduct themselves at the highest level of professionalism and within the competitive confines as set forth by NASCAR,” Johns said. “We are very disappointed that one of our employees did not meet our expectations, and we completely support NASCAR, their policies and final decisions when it comes to the substance abuse policy.”

Sauter victorious in CWTS Fred’s 250 at Talladega While 12 of his competitors were wrecking behind him on the last lap at Talladega Superspeedway on Saturday, Johnny Sauter had clear sailing at the front as he sped across the finish line to win the Fred’s 250 Camping World Truck Series race. It was Sauter’s third win of the season and the ninth of his career, and it came in a race that saw a track record 29 lead changes for a Truck race. “I had a pretty good idea what was going to happen (at the end),” Sauter said. “Everybody was fighting for the same real estate. I’ve always wanted to win at [Talladega], and to be able to do it today was big.” Justin Lofton was the only driver to suffer an injury in the crash. He has a fractured left thumb, according to his team.

Jimmie Johnson takes over Sprint Cup points lead after Camping World RV Sales 500 Points standings and race results following the Camping World RV Sales 500 at Talladega Superspeedway:

1. JIMMIE JOHNSON (finished 13th) 2,254 points; leader The new points leader admitted that he spent much of the race keeping tabs on his Chase rivals. “Thirteenth isn’t the best finish, but with what we are trying to do and win a championship, we beat the competition today and that is good.”

2. MATT KENSETH (finished 20th) 2,250 points; behind –4 He said the disappointment of losing the points lead won’t linger for long. “I feel like we can go everywhere else and race with anybody when we’re at our best. Hopefully, we’ll be at our best the next four weeks, and we’ll give them a run for their money.”

3. KYLE BUSCH (finished fifth) 2,228 points; behind –26 After wrecking hard in Saturday’s Truck race, he was happy to finish without incident on Sunday. “It’s God’s grace that allows us to finish one of these things, especially coming home with another top-5.”

4. KEVIN HARVICK (finished 12th) 2,228 points; behind -26 His team’s best-laid plans went awry at the end. “We got ourselves in position to be where we needed to be at the end of the race ... then lost everything that we gained on the last pit stop again. We were just last off of pit road.”

5. JEFF GORDON

10. CARL EDWARDS

(finished 14th) 2,220 points; behind –34 He remains within striking distance of the Chase leaders despite a mediocre Talladega finish. “We didn’t really gain anything, but we didn’t really lose anything, so it was sort of a wash ... and we just move on to the next four (races).”

(finished 17th) 2,186 points; behind –68 His No. 99 Ford was at the head of the pack with less that 20 laps remaining, but he couldn’t keep it there. “I thought we were in a really good spot, and it just did not work out. I tried my hardest, and that is what we got.”

6. DALE EARNHARDT JR. (finished second) 2,202 points; behind –52 He said his car was as good as he’s had in a long time. “Our car was a rocket, and we were able to be aggressive, and I just tried to lead every lap of the race.”

7. GREG BIFFLE (finished 11th) 2,201 points; behind –53 Like many of his peers, he was happy to still be running at the end. “We made it through. That is half the battle at this place. It was typical Talladega ... at the end of the day, we missed the wreck and that is all I really care about.”

8. CLINT BOWYER (finished 10th) 2,197 points; –57 His third top-10 finish in the Chase wasn’t enough to help him gain much ground on the leaders. He shaved six points off his deficit, but has only four races to make up the rest.

9. KURT BUSCH (finished 18th) 2,193 points; behind –61 He was in the lead pack for much of the race, leading twice for three laps, but not when it mattered most. “When it counted at the end, we weren’t there. I tried to make something happen, but couldn’t get there.”

11. RYAN NEWMAN (finished ninth) 2,182 points; behind –72 It was a relatively quiet race as far as he was concerned. “I rode around in the back all day, basically just trying to keep my nose clean. I was waiting for something to happen the whole race, but it never really did.”

12. JOEY LOGANO (finished 16th) 2,179 points; behind –75 He blamed the shark-fin-like spoiler NASCAR mandates for the cars for his inability to move up at the finish. “That is why the bottom lane doesn’t work, and it is never going to work until they change that.”

13. KASEY KAHNE (finished 36th) 2,153 points; behind –101 His disappointing Chase continued as his plans to drop back and play it safe at Talladega backfired when he lost the lead draft and was penalized for speeding on pit road. With just three caution flags all day, he never got a chance to get back on the lead lap.
