The gauntlet has been thrown for this year’s Cherry Point Area Combined Federal Campaign … and it will be settled by nothing less than war. That is if organizations here can muster up a tough-enough team to drag the prize from last year’s champions in a contest of tug of war. The tug of war tournament, officially known as the CFC Cup, will kick off the 2013 Cherry Point Area Combined Federal Campaign at the Roadhouse at 1 p.m., Sept. 20. The prize trophy, which is currently held by Marine Transport Squadron 1, will go to the strongest, or perhaps the savviest, 10-person team on the air station. Ten people – including at least one male and one female – will face their opponents over a seriously heavy rope, a short piece of real estate and a test of wills. “While most are dreaming of success, VMR-1 wakes up and continues to achieve it,” said Sgt. Maj. Larry J. Harrington. “Keep dreaming while we continue achieving, as we will for this year’s repeat. Joe Namath said, ‘If you’re not gonna go all the way, why go at all?’ VMR-1 will go

all the way, again, continuing to take it all. We recommend you stay at home.” Once the dust settles and a winner is named, the real challenge will begin for military and civilian personnel to ask themselves if there is a CFC charity they would like to support. The annual CFC fund drive gives federal employees, including military members, an easy opportunity to make donations to eligible non-profit organizations. The drive includes more than 2,500 charities ranging from charities that seek to cure a host of different medical conditions to those that benefit wounded warriors. “This campaign is the only authorized solicitation, other than the annual Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society fund drive, that helps raise money for charity,” said Bobbie Whitbeck, a CFC coordinator and human resource specialist with the air station’s Civilian Manpower Office. Over the next three months, personnel aboard the air station will have the opportunity to donate to charities of

Eight members of the Civil Air Patrol and members of United States Northern Command visited Cherry Point Aug. 26 for joint departure and arrival testing with Marine Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Squadron 2. The Civil Air Patrol is an official auxiliary unit for the Air Force that began in World War II as civilian pilots volunteering to guard the shores and border from enemy boats and submarines. USNORTHCOM partners to conduct homeland defense, civil support and security cooperation within its area of responsibility to defend, protect and secure the United States and its interests. Participants conducted the testing using two RQ-7B Shadow unmanned aerial vehicles. The UAVs were used to provide indepth information taken from their high-tech cameras and infrared equipment while relaying real-time video and images to a ground control station to help the ground control station assess situations and make important decisions quickly. During this testing the UAV’s provided surveillance while operators tested departure and approach procedures. Participants also evaluated the Shadows’ ability to track and follow larger aircraft like the Cessna 182 Skylane. “The intent of these tests is to simplify and prove that a standard procedure can and will work for the entire military,” said Maj. Joshua G. Boomer, the director of safety and standardization with VMU-2. The Civil Air Patrol departure and arrival testing is taking place within the Marine Corps, Army, Air Force and the Federal

Eight Marines with Marine Air Control Squadron 2 returned to Cherry Point Friday after a fivemonth deployment to Spain. For the duration of the deployment, the Marines were attached to Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 365 as a Marine air traffic control mobile team. The team’s mission was to provide air traffic control capabilities for expeditionary operations. As part of their mission, they had to detect and identify possible enemy combatants while providing continuous navigational assistance to friendly aircraft in an austere environment. “The Marines were awesome,” said 1st Lt. Matthew S. Jozaitis, the assistance operations officer with MACS-2. “They were ready to go, proficient at their jobs and did great things.” Marines got to enjoy Spanish culture and visited Italy for a short time while accomplishing their mission. “Getting to see areas like that was really cool,” said Cpl.Benjamin Thackrey, an air traffic controller with the squadron. “It was exciting because this was my first deployment.” Family members gathered at the MACS-2 headquarters building to meet their loved ones. “This was his first deployment but the fact that we got to email and make some phone calls made it easier while he was gone,” said Jennifer Donaldson, wife of Cpl. More than 120 Marines from Marine Attack Squadron 231 are preparing to depart Cherry Point next week to Naval Air Facility El Centro, Calif., so pilots and Marines can train in low-altitude conditions. The Marines departing for El Centro will conduct air-to-surface heavy weapons training and routine maintenance for about one month. “It is imperative that VMA-231 be prepared to deploy at a moment’s notice and the training afforded at NAF El Centro allows the squadron to train and fly with live ordnance, just as it would during an Expeditionary Operation,” said Capt. Eric A. Scherrer, quality assurance officer with VMA-231. Capt. Andrew M. Thronberg, VMA-231 pilot and operations officer, said the Marines are prepared and enthusiastic for the evolution. “Every single Marine in the squadron will get (military occupational specialty)-specific training and proficiency out of this.” Said Thornberg. The training will allow the Marines to focus on low-altitude training in a desert environment. “It is important because we got back from Afghanistan about three months ago. We had a lot of personnel turn over and we were executing very specific missions out there which were medium and high-altitude support,” said Thornberg. “With that being said a lot of us are not current and proficient in low-altitude work and general purpose munitions.” Squadron Marines are already focused on making the most of the opportunity, according to Scherrer. “VMA-231 has been focusing on basic air-to-surface sorties as well as maintenance department qualifications to ensure that our

Career intermission program Marine Administrative Message 418/13 announced the implementation of the Career Intermission Pilot Program. The new career sabbatical program allows Marines in good standing to pause their careers for up to three years without penalty while they pursue something entirely outside the scope of their Marine occupational specialty. The long-term intent of this program is to provide greater flexibility in career paths of Marines in order to retain valuable experience and training of Marines who might otherwise permanently separate. Marines can get a temporary reprieve from their duties for a few years, plus a one-time expenses-paid permanent change of station move to the location of their choice and a small monthly stipend of one-fifteenth of their active-duty salary. While Marines in the program are assigned to Individual Ready Reserve, they are exempted from reserve training requirements. Marines on career sabbatical will still have access to a few key military benefits, including TRICARE and the GI Bill. For more information, refer to the MARADMIN.

DOD kicks tobacco campaign The Department of Defense introduced “Fight the Enemy,” a video campaign aimed at helping service members kick their tobacco habits. Service members who wish to participate are encouraged to submit videos about how they are fighting tobacco use. Entries will be accepted from Aug. 15 – Oct. 15. Corps seeks uniform input Marine Corps Systems Command is conducting a survey to ask Marines what they think of a black all-weather coat, or AWC. The coat would replace the current pewter AWC. The survey began Saturday and will continue through Sept. 27. The survey consists of five demographics questions followed by four AWC survey questions and should take no longer than 10 minutes to complete. I once heard a tale about a man lost in a blazing hot desert. He’d been without food for weeks and without water for the last two days. His lips and tongue were swollen and he was down to skin and bones. If that weren’t bad enough, he was also blistered and bloody from his over-exposure to the sun and sands of the desert. He clearly didn’t have much longer to live without rescue. Crawling over a sand dune, he came upon a small plant and propped himself up on his bloody elbows to look it over. Disappointed that it had no value for food or shade, the lonely man said to the plant, “You know, if things keep going like this I might be tempted to get discouraged.” In view of the daily news, perhaps we could share the same sentiment. Each day we’re bombarded with reports about violence in the Middle East, terrorism, looming state and federal debts, high unemployment and one government scandal after another. I’m sure many of us could add our own list of personal trials

and setbacks that make the prospects of a better future seem even gloomier. How can we fight the temptation to get negative, cynical and retreat into the shadows of discouragement? I suppose we could point to the need to count our blessings. Indeed, most of the time no matter how bad things seem, we can still find more good in our lives than bad, but the reality is that even that doesn’t always help when you’re tangled in a bramble of problems and trying to get out. Perhaps we could also point to the need to just be patient and remember that things rarely “keep going like this” for long, and if we tough it out, things are bound to get better. But let’s be honest – that doesn’t usually make us feel much better either. The Apostle Paul was in a Roman prison, not sure if his future held freedom or execution when he wrote, “I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content See CONTENT page A7

When someone says they’re a mechanic, it could imply a range of skills from changing the spark plug on a lawnmower to building high-performance racing engines. When Cpl. Joshua B. Dyer says it, he means that he inspects and maintains an engine that produces more than 11,000 pounds of force to propel the Corps’ premier tactical electronic warfare aircraft to exercises and operations around the world. “As powerline mechanics, we maintain the engines of the Prowlers, launch aircraft and oversee the safety of all personnel on the flightline,” he said. Dyer enjoys being a powerline mechanic because of the busy work schedule. “I enjoy my job because we are always busy,” he said. “We have a lot of responsibilities and not much down time. There is always something new to learn.” VMAQT-1 was redesignated as a training squadron June 14. The squadron is now the sole source for training Marine Prowler pilots as the Navy prepares to retire its fleet of EA-6B aircraft next year. Dyer believes the squadron’s pride in making sure the job is done correctly helps build the unity within the squadron. “We have a very tight unit,” he said. “The Marines are motivated, enthusiastic and have a lot of pride in what they do, which builds the morale and brings us together as a unit.”

After completing obstacle runs and half marathons, Gunnery Sgt. Juan R. Laureano feels ready to push himself to the next level – a full marathon. Daily runs and physical training sessions are how the maintenance chief with 2nd Low Altitude Air Defense Battalion and his twin brother, Juan A. Laureano, are preparing their bodies for the 38th Marine Corps Marathon. Juan R. started training for the marathon just hoping to finish the race. Soon after beginning his training, he realized his goal had changed. The brothers have been intimately affected by diabetes. As young boys, they saw its detrimental effects materialize as their grandfather’s body slowly deteriorated, leaving him blind, paralyzed and eventually killing him. Their father, also a diabetic, faced eye surgery and a kidney transplant as the disease’s long-term effects grew more serious. He now has to monitor his health very closely. Other members of the Laureano’s family are affected by diabetes and have suffered amputations, nerve damage, heart disease and blindness. “I always knew I was at high risk for diabetes because it runs in my family,” he said. “But it wasn’t until my twin brother was diagnosed that I really started to change my life.” The brothers plan to run as members of a diabetes research and wellness foundation team in an effort to raise awareness of the disease and the constant search for a cure. They want to let people know that although there is no cure yet, a healthy diet and exercise can deter the disease. “When I was diagnosed with diabetes in 2005, I knew I had to change my bad habits,” said Juan A., an insurance claims adjuster. “It is a big adjustment, but anything is possible.” After Juan R. completes the marathon and experiences the satisfaction of helping a deserving cause, he plans to continue running to aid diabetes research organizations in their search for a cure. The brothers want supporters to know that, even with a disease like diabetes, people can do anything they set their minds to; there are no limits. “Everyone has a cause, and I think this one is mine,” said Juan R. “It is the beginning of a new journey and this is my opportunity to make a positive change.”

Actor and musician Gary A. Sinise was named an honorary U.S. Marine during a ceremony at the Home of the Commandants, Marine Barracks Washington, D.C., Aug. 29. Sinise shares this title with other notable people including actor Chuck Norris and Pulitzer prize-winning photographer Joe Rosenthal. “This was one of the most extraordinary nights. I was totally surprised by what the general gave me tonight. I’m humbled, shocked, moved and motivated to keep standing up for our men and women and giving back to them,” said Sinise. Gen. James F. home at the barracks. “There is little I can say to enhance the rich reputation Gary Sinise has earned, both in the spotlight as an immensely talented actor, and less conspicuously as a tireless advocate for our men and women in uniform. Sinise, 58, has acted in movies and TV shows including “Forrest Gump” and “CSI: New York” and performs in his own band, The Lt. Dan Band. Sinise is also the founder of the Gary Sinise Foundation which supports veterans and their families through programs meant to entertain, strengthen and educate.

MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP S. D. BUTLER, Okinawa – Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 262 was redesignated as Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 262 during a ceremony Friday at Marine Corps Air Station Futenma. HMM-262, which is assigned to Marine Aircraft Group 36, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, was originally activated Sept. 1, 1951 as Marine Helicopter Transport Squadron 262 at Cherry Point and redesignated to HMM-262 Feb. 1, 1962 when the unit began using the CH-46 helicopter. “Since your activation nearly 62 years ago, on Sept. 1, 1951, you have served with distinction as a continuously forward deployed unit for over half of your existence,” said Brig. Gen. Steven R. Rudder, commanding general of 1st MAW. “With a long and proud history which includes combat operations in the Republic of Vietnam and Operation Iraqi Freedom, as well as humanitarian operations on the island of Kauai after Hurricane Iniki, tsunami disaster relief in the Republic of the Philippines, Indonesia, East Timor, and mainland Japan during support of

Operation Tomodachi, you constantly demonstrated undaunted versatility. I have no doubt that you will continue this exceptional legacy with this new chapter in your history. I wish you all the best in this transition and expect nothing less than the continued operational excellence for which the tigers are known.” The squadron was redesignated to reflect the change to the MV-22B Osprey as the squadron’s primary airframe. The U.S. Marine Corps on Okinawa is replacing CH-46E helicopters with MV-22B Osprey aircraft on a one-for one basis. The Osprey is able to fly twice as fast, carry three times the payload and has four times the range of the Sea Knight. Basing the Osprey in Okinawa significantly strengthens the United States’ ability to provide for the defense of Japan, perform humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations and fulfill other alliance roles. “As our country and Corps shift strategic focus back to the Pacific region, I take great pride in knowing that the Tigers will continue to be at the forefront of 1st Marine Aircraft Wing’s response capability.”

Siegel, the test chief with USNORTHCOM, said these tests are setting the foundation for a standard operating procedure that will be proposed to the FAA. “Everyone is imperative in the success of this training,” he said. “The Marines are assisting with setting up the site, launching and recovering aircraft, ensuring all gear is operational and sitting in as observers on flights with the Civil Air Patrol.” “This testing has been very successful so far,” said Boomer. “A lot of preparation went into it beforehand, and so far, we have been 100 percent successful.” The testing is scheduled to continue through Sept. 12. IE SHIMA, Okinawa - Pilots of CH46E Sea Knight helicopters and KC-130J Super Hercules practiced their threat reaction flight techniques using simulated missiles Aug. 27 on a training island off the coast of Ie Shima. The CH-46E pilots are with Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 262 out of Okinawa, Japan. The KC-130J pilots are with Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 152. The simulated missiles were GTR-18 surface-to-air missiles, otherwise known as “smokey SAMs,” which are small rockets used to simulate surface-to-air missiles, according to Sgt. David S. Chang, an aviation ordnance technician with VMGR-152. “The pilots have to react to that smoke and perform threat reactions and evasive maneuvers,” said Chang. The threat response and evasive maneuvers make the training defense-oriented, meaning the pilots are trying to keep their crew, passengers and cargo safe, as well as the aircraft. “The main goal of (the pilot) is to safeguard the crew and passengers,” said Capt. William F. Lipstreu, a KC-130J pilot with VMGR-152. “We take a lot of Marines where they need to go and that includes combat zones, if necessary. Marines should know that they’ll be safe in our hands because of training like this.” The Smokey SAM training also keeps pilots prepared in the case of a significant

ground-to-air threat during a combat situation. “Some of the new pilots who arrive to the squadron have no combat experience,” said Lipstreu. “It’s more difficult to get combat trained now, due to the fact that there are very few combat missions at this time. “This training simulates a combat environment, which keeps us better prepared for tactical missions in our area of operations,” said Lipstreu. MCIEAST hosts dynamic driving course

Marines and Sailors from various military installations in North Carolina enhanced their driving skills through a dynamic driving course at Marine Corps Auxiliary Landing Field Bogue Aug. 27 and 28. The Richard Petty Driving Experience, along with Clemson University Institute for Global Road Safety and Security, provided participants with realistic situations and tested their driving knowledge and skills. Participants learned breaking, control, reaction time and obstacle avoidance techniques. Each skill was tested under wet and dry conditions and interwoven with distractions such as passengers and texting. The two-day event offered groups of 16 Marines and Sailors four hours of classroom training in tent modules and hands-on training behind the wheel. “We teach things that apply to all drivers,” said Ken-

neth B. Rogich, chief financial officer with the Richard Petty Driving Experience. “Many drivers become complacent and forget the basics. This course is a great way to teach drivers how to be actively engaged in what they are doing and avoid distractions.” Some of the techniques taught in this course were break-stop-break, break-turn-break, obstacle avoidance and speed-stop. “We want to teach them driving skills that help them learn the physical and mental aspects of driving,” said Rick C. Fedrizzi, the president and chief of operations with Richard Petty Driving Experience. “They are learning the basic risks involved with driving as well as car control skills and regaining control safely and quickly when it is lost.” Students were selected by their units based on their willingness to participate and desire for further instruction and knowledge about driving and road safety.

The landing support specialist with Marine Special Operations Logistics Battalion at Stone Bay in Camp Lejeune said it makes him feel more comfortable knowing that if a situation arises while he is driving, he will know how to handle it properly. “The most common mistake that is seen in accidents is not a lack of reaction,” said Rogich. “It is overreacting.” The instructors of the course said they hope the students leave with a better understanding of the risks and consequences involved when mistakes are made while driving. They want drivers to know that there is a huge risk involved with driving, and therefore, driving should be taken as seriously as any other activity involving risk. “Don’t miss out on this opportunity,” said Cloutier.” Take this time to experience things, learn and have fun.”

It’s that time of year again. Here are some interesting facts as you send your children back to school! The academic success of America’s youth is strongly linked with their health. Health-related factors such as hunger, physical and emotional abuse, and chronic illness can lead to poor school performance. Health-risk behaviors such as early sexual initiation, violence and physical inactivity are consistently linked to poor grades and test scores and lower educational attainment. In turn, academic success is an excellent indicator for the overall well-being of youth and a primary predictor and determinant of adult health outcomes. Leading national education organizations recognize the close relationship between health and education, as well as the need to foster health and well-being within the educational environment

for all students. Scientific reviews have documented that school health programs can have positive effects on educational outcomes, as well as health-risk behaviors and health outcomes. Similarly, programs that are primarily designed to improve academic performance are increasingly recognized as important public health interventions. Schools play a critical role in promoting the health and safety of young people and helping them establish lifelong healthy behaviors. Research also has shown that school health programs can reduce the prevalence of health risk behaviors among young people and have a positive effect on academic performance. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention analyzes research findings to develop guidelines and strategies for schools to address health risk behaviors among students and creates tools to help schools implement these guidelines.

The sun is setting on summer fun and thoughts are turning toward a new school year. TRICARE beneficiaries will be scheduling physicals and making sure their kids get their shots. Most primary schools in the United States require students to have an annual physical and to be up-to-date on immunizations before starting the school year. Parents should check their school district’s enrollment requirements. TRICARE covers necessary physical exams children ages 5-11 need to enroll in school, and age-appropriate immunizations recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Immunizations are the most effective way to prevent disease and complications from disease, especially among young children. August is Immunization Awareness Month, the perfect time to make sure children get immunized before heading back to school. TRICARE covers immunizations at no cost to beneficiaries if they get them at a TRICARE-authorized provider or participating TRICARE network pharmacy. To find a pharmacy or provider that participates in the vaccine program and to see a list of covered immunizations go to www.tricare.mil/immunizations. Parents should keep in mind that immunizations aren’t just important for elementary school-aged children; babies and teens also need to stay fully vaccinated. CDC’s website has information about which immunizations are recommended up to age 18, and why. Harvick dominated the last half of the race, leading 132 laps, and held off Kyle Busch in the closing laps to secure his first Nationwide victory of the season, the 40th of his career and his second at AMS. Busch was the runner-up ahead of Sam Hornish Jr., Kasey Kahne and Kyle Larson. Hornish’s finish allowed him to push his points lead from six to 10 over second-place Austin Dillon, who finished eighth at Atlanta.

Ganassi betting on Kyle Larson’s talent over his seat time in appointing him driver of No. 42 Chevrolet in 2014 Sprint Cup team owner Chip Ganassi has a track record of taking chances when he hires race drivers, and that was the case again as he’s picked the relatively inexperienced Kyle Larson as the new driver of his No. 42 Chevrolet beginning next year. In choosing Larson, a 21-year-old racer who has just 24 Nationwide Series career starts and six more in the Camping World Truck Series, Ganassi is betting that the youngster’s immense talent will overcome his lack of seat time in vehicles similar to the ones he’ll drive on the Sprint Cup circuit. Larson has a win and a second-place finish in Trucks this season and six top-five finishes in the Nationwide Series, but he’s a regular winner on short-track circuits. And in teaming up with Ganassi, Larson, who has been under contract with the veteran team owner since last year, also is gambling that Ganassi, who hasn’t won a Cup race since 2010, can deliver him a car capable of continuing his upward career climb. Fellow racer Ryan Newman said that while Larson is short on NASCAR starts, his experience in sprint cars and other forms of motorsports has him prepared to take over the car now driven by Juan Pablo Montoya. “I think Kyle has definitely proven across the board he can drive absolutely anything — anywhere, anytime,” Newman said, adding that the real tests will come off the track. “I think the biggest challenge he’s going to have ahead of him is not what happens outside of this [media] room, it’s what happens inside of this room — the media part of it; the publicity part of it,” Newman said. Allmendinger to return to Sprint Cup full-time in 2014 A.J. Allmendinger, whose racing career appeared to be in great jeopardy when he failed a drug test in July 2012 and lost his ride with Penske Racing, will return to the Sprint Cup circuit full-time next season as driver of the No. 47 Toyota, the same car he’s been driving on a limited A.J. Allmendinger basis this season. He said during a press conference at Atlanta that the one-car JTG-Daugherty Racing team suits him fine. “Everybody’s got such good family values,” he said. “It’s been great for me to be a part of the race team so far. It’s a good, little race team ... I feel like we can really build this race team and make it stronger.” Allmendinger has made four starts already in the car this season, with a best finish of 10th at Watkins Glen. The hiring of Allmendinger means that the car’s longtime driver, Bobby Labonte, will be looking for a new ride in the future. He was set to drive the No. 51 Phoenix Racing Chevrolet this weekend at AMS, but broke three ribs in a bicycling accident last week. He was set to share the No. 47 with Allmendinger in the remaining races this year, but whether he’ll return to the car is uncertain. Allmendinger said he won’t be a part of pushing Labonte out of the car. “That’s not my decision, and I’m not going to push for that either,” he said.
