RACING IN FRANCE After surgery received last December, I tried to go back in racing at French AFF slalom championship, IFCA Master European championship and Defi Wind. Bad attempts at that time, I did not recover that much and felt not that confident with my body. I’m feeling better from few days now and decided to try again on a long distance race in Six Fours on June 20th. We had to be patient struggling with gusty wind between 15 and 28 knots and choppy water. I decided to go with my 7,7 TRXI, playing on up haul with wind strength change. TRXI 7.7 was the perfect choice allowing me not to collapse in wind holes and with full acceleration in gusts. In the end, after 4 races, with rabbit start and the whole fleet (40 people) racing all together, and full afternoon of pure fun, I finished 2nd between Steve Laubanay (quite above me with a better sped, that’s life J) and Pierre Moretti. I did oscillate between 2nd, 3rd and 4th place on first 3 races. Last race was made fo bad choice for me with 7,0 TRXI and smaller board; I was sinking in upwind tack. Aloha, Fabien.

PWA COSTA BRAVA! Hi all! In June I went to my first PWA event on the Costa Brava with my TR-XI machines. My goal during this event is to pass the first round as much as possible and get hopefully a top 40 rank. I arrived 2days before the event. In these days I had the opportunity to fine tune my 9.3 because I used that sail only twice till then. I was happy that I had the time to tune because I knew that I had to use the 9.3 a lot in the light thermic wind. After these 2 days the event starded. Day 1: I really did’nt know what I could expect from myself. I was pumped up and full energy but there was not enough wind for racing. Day 2: After a long wait there was finally some sea breeze just enough to race. I was in Heat 7 with for me some big names. I was looking forward to race. I took my 9.3 and big board for the race. Only I got nervous just before the start. The result of that was a crash at the first mark and went straight out. I was super disappointed in myself. After some talk to my dad my focus was on the next round.

The next round came right after the first. Again in Heat 7 with big names. This time i was less nervous but made a too wide jibe at the first mark. Finished in 6th position so out in the first round again. I was disappointed again but my racing was better accept the start and first jibe. I knew I had to focus on those points to pass that first round. During day 3, 4 and 5 there was not enough wind to race so I could imagine how to race well the next time, relax and swim in the pool. The Final day. Day 6: The forecast was not that good but finally some stable sea breeze showed up! Time to race again. After finishing the 2nd elimination there was time to do a 3rd. Starting in Heat 8. After a good start at the boat and a good first jibe I finally passed the first round! Super happy with that I went for the quarters. After again a good start at the boat and a proper first mark rounding I was in forth position in front of Micah Buzianis. I was a bit scared but somehow managed to stay in front! Passing to the half final! In this half final I had a bad start and was already in the back at the first mark. I knew it was impossible to end up in the top 4. I kept trying and hoped for miracle but nothing happens. On to the losers final. After nailing the start and a good first mark jibe I was in 3rd position for almost the whole race. Until the last mark. I got stuck on a wave in the jibe. Could not get planning early enough. So Gonzalo and Bennie and Adriaan passed me. Finished 6th. So my rank for the 3rd elimination is a 14! Back on shore a lot of guys where super happy for me but I had mixed feelings. I was not happy with my last jibe. But hey! This is my first PWA I need to learn a lot and making mistakes is part of that. After this third round they decided to try and finish a 4th round. I was in Heat 3 and passed again to the next round. I was full energy

again! Sadly enough the wind dropped after that. End of the event. In the end my rank was place 46. I was happy about my last racing day. Sadly enough I messed up my first 2 rounds. Otherwise I would end up in the top 40. On to the next competitions: World slalom Championships in Sylt and the PWA Alacati event! Tomas van Zelst

DA KINE CLASSSIC AT KANAHA JUST GETS ENOUGH WIND Finally some racing at Kanaha Beach Park this past weekend with the Da Kine Classic. Light winds plagued the first week of racing two weeks ago and it wasn’t looking good for a while on Saturday but the competitors were keen to get on the race course and give it a go even if it wasn’t ideal Maui Conditions. Most competitors were on their big sails ranging from 6.6 to 7.8m and even at times it wasn’t enough if you were unfortunate to park into a "no wind zone" on the race course. With 40 plus racers showing up to race we got under way with the age group racers around noon followed by the skill groups in the afternoon. Tamara Bockius lead all her heats to comfortably win the womens division. Tamara has been training most of the year so she was looking sharp on the race course carrying a TRXI 6.3 most of the heats. In the Juniors it was the younger Bockius, "Sailor" who continues to surprise us all, sailing the battleship galactica and pushing the big board around using a Legend 3.7m....but she did it again and WON. The mens 50-59 was hotly contested by Phil McGain and Mike Yasak both using TRXI, 7.0 and 7.7 respectively. Phil being a little underpowered on the 7.0 had to push for clean starts and sharp jibes to remain ahead of Mike. Mike was able to string together a bunch of seconds in the light winds to secure his spot on the podium. Season veteran Todd Macfarlane was able to sail well in the Mens 60 and over division to secure a well deserved third place. We had a visit from San Francisco native Sean Kelly who arrived on Maui for slalom training and was able to put together a very good day by winning the Semi Pro division and placing 3rd in the Mens 19-39 division. Sean recently won the local San Francisco slalom races put on my by the St. Francis Yacht club. See you all in a few weeks at the next series. Photos : Madi McGain

ANOTHER MAUI RACE SERIES WITH PERFECT WINDS WITH MCGAIN WINNING THE DOUBLE The Meanline Fins open was the race this weekend at Kanaha beach park for the third of the Maui Race Series. The winds kicked in to about 20 knots with most sailors changing down from the previous event to there 6m and 7m sails. The age group racers were the first to be run with phil McGain dominating again in the Mens 50-59 scoring all bullets ahead of Mike Yasak and Geoff Pease in third. McGain has awesome board speed and sailed consistent off the starts to take control of each heat by the first buoy. The womens heats were hotly contested by Tamara Bockius and the Japanese racers Mai Mitsuishi, Yuki Sunaga and Chizuko Takano. Tamara and Mai had equal points but Mai won with the a better discard. Todd Macfarlane put together some solid heats to finish second in the Mens 60 and over division, while Sailor Bockius once again proved she’s the one to beat in the Juniors winning all of the four heats. In the afternoon the skill divisions got underway in 15-20 knot trade winds. Tom Peterson fresh off the plane would put together some good heats to finish second in the expert division. Phil McGain in the pro divsion put down his stamp by winning the first heat and placing second in the next heat. Heat 3 proved to be a blunder for the majority of the fleet with only 3 competitors being finished while the rest of the fleet were DSQ for premature starts. It was all down to heat 4 to see who the winner would be. Micah Buzianis got a clean start as did McGain and they would come across the line one and two, but it was the board speed and consistency from Phil McGain that proved too much this time and he would win the pro division ahead of a stacked field. Phils was quoted at the end of the day..." There was great breeze out there today and I’m happy with my speed....the sails were feeling awesome and steady in these conditions. It’s always good to beat the young guys".
