FEBRUARY

WAS TOO COLD TO GO WINDSURFING

Unfortunately February was too cold to go windsurfing. Nowadays the wetsuits are much better than 10 years ago but at a temperature of 0 degrees and snow on the ground I better stay at home on my couch or prepare my stuff for the new season which means changing worn harness lines for example or repairing dings on the deck of my board after hitting the rocks. After February I have to admit that it would have been better to spend the whole February in Cape Town as always. But this year I wanted to save money to try something new at the end of the year. For the moment it is not clear which trip is on the agenda but it will be sick for sure. March started very promising. Meanwhile, I was several times on the water and could score nice freestyle sessions. The pictures in the attachment are from my last session in Schausende. The Spot Schausende is located on a fjord near Flensburg. It is a typical freestyle spot in the Baltic Sea and easy to reach after work. Although freestyle is always fun to me I prefer riding waves on the North Sea. At this stage of the year you have to take what you get and I do not want to complain too much. After an exhausting day in the office it still provides a perfect balance.

During my last session I was sailing the new 4.8 Mutant. I was surprised that you can fly through the moves so easily. The excellent on/off behavior which you can feel on the wave before initiating the bottom turn has a positive effect on ducking the sail which is always the hardest part if you want to bust out a new school move like a burner or kono. In addition it is commonly known as a light and compact sail. All of these are characteristics that I wish for good freestyle sail. Nevertheless I would like to sail it in its usual environment: Waves!!! Spring is coming! All the best, Holger Beer

FOR THE FIRST TIME WHIT THE NEW TRXI 7.0 Today I sailed for the first time whit the new TRXI 7,0. It’s gone be the first year for me sailing as a national teamrider for MauiSails and F2. I used to ride the TR-4 series from MauiSails last year, when I first sailed with the new sails today it feeled awesome. The sails have so much more power and much more stabel. Also the cambers rotate the first time that i pull the sail. This year I want to join all the national competitions in The Netherlands, and im going to try to get the most out of it. See you on the water, Thom van de Sandee

AMAZING SPOT NORTH IN BRITTANY

.17

Maui Monthly

I am fortunate to have a foothold in a small Brittany village on the north coast. A few kilometers from the famous walled city of SaintMalo, Lancieux is a popular sailing spot thanks to its perfectly swept bay and prevailing winds. At this point the odds are jagged with large and fine sandy beaches, islands, small cliffs and large bays. It is a beautiful place with very varied landscapes. They are highly popular among French and foreign tourists. Famous crêpes, seafood, including tasty blue lobster‌for les Gourmets. And to complete this idyllic picture, I am a member of the nautical center of Lancieux, which is a very dynamic sportive club. It organizes windsurfing championship rounds of Brittany and many dinghies and windsurfing races. We gather a group of passionate windsurfers so that each time there is wind - in winter or summertime -, we get to tack together, often towards the island of Les Ehbiens, the most beautiful location!

Another high interest of the spot is the amplitude of very high tides which modifies the water, with more or less waves, more or less power but more or less tricky rocks too! It allows moving quickly and having very varied sailing conditions, in one full day: waves and slalom runs. When it is set to Lancieux, we are almost ready to navigate all the spots in France. Furthermore, there are many young windsurfers in the area, who are highly motivated for compete and do not hesitate to launch trainings and test matches as soon as they can. Last February, I was pleased to receive my new boards, RRD X-fire V7. This is of course in Lancieux I did my first tests in a very gusty wind but quite comfortable temperatures. The RRD and Maui Sails TR combo seems to work very well, to make the board lifting properly. Finally, I met very good average speeds through and upwind. Maui TR XI should arrive in France at the end of March. Spring months will therefore be mainly devoted to the preparation of Le Défi Wind, the biggest windsurfing worldwide event. It will this year deal with 1200 windsurfers whose best riders of the PWA. Each year Le Défi Wind highlights the season and meets a growing success. 40km races in a wind between 30 and 50 knots for 4 days. You need to be well prepared since it is surely one of the toughest competitions. Anyway if you want to sail on one of the most beautiful spots in France and try Sails Maui ... you know where to come, you are warmly welcome! WEIRD WEATHER FOR FEBRUARY Last month was pretty strange here on Maui, as we were plagued with multiple days of clouds, rain, and onshore wind, making it tricky to find any conditions on the North shore. Though typically we expect a certain amount of rainy days and not much wind in February, this was something else. Towards the end of the month we got two good days, and with a new board from Keith Teboul, I was beyond stoked to get on the water. Despite the ‘colder’ temperatures, Maui was still Maui, and any good day here felt like another epic day in paradise. We had solid size swell for both days, and I was able to try out my new board in both 4.6 and 4.3 conditions. When the swell died for the third day, Uncle Phil, Tammy and myself snuck out at Kuau on the TR-XI’s for a quick videoshoot session. The winds were a bit east that day which makes it pretty gusty, and since they were still strong I opted for the 6.3. Compared to the TR-X I was immediately blown away with the wider range of the 6.3 this year, and how it breathed much more like the 7.0 and 7.7 TR-X. Looking forward to a change in the weather for March! Cya on the water, Casey Hauser US-634

MY EXPERIENCE WITH TR-X RACE SAIL I do really like the TR sails as they are becoming more and more refined each year. The sails have become great in handling and in controling at the upper range and in gusts. There seems to be lost some of the low end and I’m hoping this will return with the TRXI.

As I am eagerly waiting for the new sails to come I have been trying and tweaking the TRX sails. As we have winter in Slovenia there is not a lot of time to go slalom testing.

I went to the seaside with a 6.6 TRX and as always the top end is phenomenal and can easily handle 35kn with the sail. Using the K masts the sail is working properly. But then I started changing some fins and that worked good. But still I was lacking some low end power. I have to be completely fair and just praise the top end of the sail which is amazing! If I think that it is sailable (windsurfable) then 6.6 is small enough.

Our Experience, Your Reward

After changing fins I have tried some other mast (CC 100%) which gave a completely different view on the ground. And then also on the water. The whole thing is visible on land as well - if you check the leech on the K masts you can see that the middle section is bending more than the top section. It is not really going according to the seam. If we are to be following the seam then we need to change something. This was tried with an older version of a softer mast from a different brand. The leech was following the seam more thoroughly and there was deeper draft and the cams fitted well. After that I went on the water. I must say that I have been pretty impressed by the softer and easier sail which opened more at the top and gained more profile down. It felt more forward pulling and I liked it. I gained the low end but can’t really say about the top end... It is still to early to tell since my friend has already went out of the water and he is a good sparring partner. It might be that I’m a little lighter at 76kg than the guys for which the development was planned and that could be why I liked the softer mast. As I am waiting for the new sails to come I am wondering whether the changes in the sails will favor more the K masts or will the softer mast be a better option... Anyway I really like the trx and can’t wait to get the new TRXI. Also looking forward to any replies from Phil. Marko Kavcic
