HIGH SPEED MAY As 2014 continued to roll on at high speed May came and went at the same click. Maui trade winds started off well in May but then went a bit wonky in the middle but I still had some of my best sailing days in quite a while. Training and prepping for Costa Brava was again my main focus but it was Maui Sails photo shoot time and as usual this forced me to get out at Hookipa again, and this was a very good thing. I was making even more progress with my fine tuning of the TRX’s, finding all the right settings making a few small tweaks to try and make my rigs as light as possible and finding the best masts for each sail size. The new masts were working great, a very good improvement over last years mast both in performance and durability. I was also working with my new JP slalom boards finding all the right settings with footstraps, mast base position and all the right fin combinations. Even though it was not the best month for wind for the average sailor it was very good for what I wanted to do and I had a number of good days on all sizes of sails and boards. When the time came for packing I felt very good about what I had with the new Maui Sails and JP’s and I new exactly what was what heading to Costa Brava and the first race of the year. The highlight of the month, besides mother’s day and my wife’s birthday of course was the Maui Sails photo shoot. Even though it had been longer than I can remember since I had been out at Ho’okipa(not saying much since it seems my memory gets shorter and shorter each year)needless to say I was a bit nervous on the first day of mast high waves at lanes. The wind was light for Ho’okipa ane there were still to many surfers out so Bogo sent us down to Lanes. It was difficult for me as I only had a 5.4 Global on my 93L JP Single Thruster and it is quite hard to get out at Lanes in light wind but I still managed to catch a few very nice waves. I haven’t ridden the Global much and I was very pleasantly surprised with the performance of the new one, even though it was only a 5.4 I still made it around very easily and had plenty of power on the waves.

It is rare to get a swell this good this time of year but they are usually very good when they do show up. The next day at Ho’okipa it was a bit smaller around 4’ but the wind was a bit better. I was again assigned to the Global 5.4 and had an even better session than at Lanes. These two days gave me a great reminder about how much fun it is to sail Ho’okipa and how lucky I am to be able to do so. The rest of the photo shoot was a bit dull compared to these two days but I still had some fun slalom sessions for the cameras with Phil, Tammy and Taty as well as some freeridin’ with Bogo swimming around at camp one on the new Blaze. I also got to watch Taty on the new Loco, it is truly amazing what he can do with the freestyle and what a talented sailor he is. My family and I were also fortunate to have Taty and Bogo join us for dinner one evening, my kids were in awe of the famous Taty and he was also kind enough to sit and watch some of my girls favorite movie Frozen, I am not sure who was enjoying it more Taty or K.C. and Dakotah!!!! Well once all the photos were taken and the training in the books it was time to get back on the road and head to Costa Brava, I had to leave on the eve of my wife’s birthday so I hope to make it up to her when I get back. Even though I had to get on the long flight to Europe I was very much looking forward to getting back on the race course to see how good my new Maui Sails TRX’s and my JP’s Slaloms really are!!!! PHOTOS ON MAUI AND TAHITI TRIP May was a busy month cause our Maui Sails photographer arrived on Maui on May 3rd. We got lucky cause we got good waves condition the following week, so i got to try the new 3 batten "epic" and The new mutant wich are really good and will be perfect for all kinds of condition i’m gonna have thru m’y season.

I was so stoked cause we finished to shoot the waves Sails in couples days so i just booked a plan ticket, took the epic sails and went for 2 weeks in Tahiti with m’y friend Antoine Martin. I planed this trip a few month before but those two weeks there was the perfect timming cause 3 days after we scored Teahupoo with the perfect condition

for windsurf: the waves were opening a little more then usual with some mast hight+ sets and the wind was sideoff and i was perfect with the 4,6 epic. Kevin Pritchard come with us too film so you gonna see those incradible footage beginning of July when we gonna release the video. We sailed two days after with smaller waves (mast hight in the big sets) but nothing compair to thise unbeleiveble day we’ve had two days before. After those day we had no time to reste because the surf was pretty much perfect every other day so the 2 weeks on Tahiti went super fast. We got back on maui on the 25 and were leaving to the first AWT event in santa Cruz on June 3rd. Condition were not happening so i just dirt bike, run and got the gear ready for the whole AWT and PWA season. Camille Juban

Finalizing design details and testing on the 2015 wave sails. Final CAD designs sent to factory and sails are in production. Some exciting new models and developments for 2015 and we have the most complete wave sail line up ever. Technical new materials, including our custom, lightweight metallic scrim Our multiple AWT champion, Guinness record holding, high performance 4 batten wave sail range, the Mutant has experienced such popularity that we decided to add some sizes, a 4.8 and a 5.3. We also worked on the shaping and outlines, expanding upper wind range and improving responsiveness. The Mutant’s lethal combination of insane maneuverability on the wave together with excellent drive, power and wind range, make it the ultimate weapon for those looking to destroy waves like never before. One of our most refined and technically advanced sails is the new “Ghost-CS”. Built with maximum use of the finest ultra-light and strong Technora scrim and eliminating any “fluff”, the Ghost CS is designed for pure performance and incredible light weight. The 5 batten skeleton and refined shaping evolved from Legend development, give you maximum control and wind range but with weight lighter than most 3 and 4 batten sails on the market and comparable to a sail 1.5 m smaller. The Legend is our super versatile, 5 batten sideshore wave sail constructed with an emphasis on durability and light weight. The Legend’s great control and wind range make it feel at home whether sailing in mast high Hookipa or overpowered Columbia River Gorge. The Epic is our exciting new 3-batten wave riding sail. The Epic combines the quickest sail handling with light weight and responsiveness, making it perfect for new school, freestyle inspired wave maneuvers.

The Loco Pro, with 4 battens from 4.0 to 5.6 has been tuned up this year for better tension distribution and responsiveness. We compared the balance and tension throughout the range and worked to bring all sizes in line with the ones that were performing the best. Designed with testing feedback from Taty, this sail is tuned to freestyles cutting edge. The Global returns for those that just can’t get enough power. It will satisfy your power-hunger, pulling you over onshore white water and onto a plane like a tractor. The Switch is the perfect sail for high speed bump and jump blasting. The 6 batten outline and tube rod battens give it great high powered stability, while the outline keeps it maneuver friendly. Aloha, Artur Szpunar

THE END OF AN UNFORGETTABLE MAUI SEASON! Stacked with photoshoots, SUP contests, Xensr testing, and packing up to get ready for the summer, May was another killer month on Maui! After an arguably ’disappointing’ April in terms of typical springtime conditions, May started off in a rampage quickly making up for lost sessions at Hookipa, just in time for our photoshoots. Taty and Bogo came in right before the first weekend, and on Saturday Camille, Sarah and I decided to do the Bluesmiths’ Paddle IMUA race from Maliko to Kahului harbor. The waves hadn’t quite come in yet, but the weather had turned in time for the race, and we took off in blue skies and enough wind to pass by Taty as he was blasting around and flying out of perfect spin loops on the 5.6 Switch just above Hookipa. By the evening you could start to see the distinct lines of a new NW swell filling in and I went to bed more excited than I had been for awhile in anticipation for what tomorrow would bring.

Sunday was packed at Hookipa with surfers despite the wind filling in early, but Lanes had some of the cleanest waves coming through of the season. With a van full of fresh 2015 wave gear it was game on to pull out the new toys and see what was in store for next year! While Ferdinando and Art grabbed the Legend and Ghost CS for the first day and Micah the Global, Camille and I went straight for the 4.6 Mutant and Art’s latest creation, the 3 batten Epic. Camille took the Mutant first and I had the privilege of taking the Epic on her maiden voyage to Lanes. Aptly named, the Epic is a ’surfer’ wavesailor’s dream sail. I can’t just say "Oh, it was the lightest sail ever," because, well, our range is already incredibly light weight and light feeling. The Epic is no different, however it’s feel is truly unique. Where the Mutant has a light, agile feeling, it also retains a bit of grunt in the back-hand. Very controllable, as you slide your hands back in the bottom turn, you can harness the Mutant’s extra torque like downshifting into a turn, and fly up to the lip. The Epic has a one of a kind neutral feeling in your hands. In the bottom turn, both down the line and backside, when you sheet in, the sail effortlessly drops and it feels more like you’re surfing than actually wavesailing. Off the top the release is so light and quick that Camille and I both noticed that it almost automatically reorients itself back down the wave as if it’s on autopilot and you’re just along for the ride. The profile feels great and the sail maintains good stability in the stronger gusts, while still somehow has enough low end to the point that even with 15 pounds on him I was able to almost plane as often as Camille with the 4.6 Mutant, almost.. :)

For the rest of Sunday and the following week we spent our time hitting the water at Hookipa and Camp One going through the range of 2015 gear. Photoshoots are always a blast for me as it feels like an annual family reunion. It only took two more days of epic wavesailing at Hookipa on the Epic, Mutant, Legend, Ghost CS (no, apparently it doesn’t stand for Casey’s Sail), and Global before switching over to the flatwater lineup. On Wednesday we headed down to Camp one and blasted around on the 5.6 Switch and Titan GS 7.5. Though you’d assume I’d prefer the wavesailing days to flatwater, it’s actually the opposite. Growing up blasting around on the lake with my parents and friends, flatwater blasting is how I fell in love with this sport and what sucked me into making a career and lifestyle around it. And it’s a lifestyle I have absolutely no regrets about. As May came to a close, so to did my 3rd season on Maui, I can’t believe it! Marrying the girl of my dreams, qualifying for the PWA JP Aloha Classic at Hookipa, as well as so many more incredible days, sessions, and memories with amazing friends all obsessed with this crazy sport, it was a season I will never forget! TO THE W

May brought good wind and much windsurfing which is always good. First two weeks on Bonaire sailing everyday combining fitness in the morning, freestyling in the mid day, and with afternoon slalom training with the local boys using everyday my TR9 5.5 and Isonic 87. It was just so amazing how many days of windsurfing I got in. After that, in the middle of the month I flew to Maui for the annual Mauisails new products photoshoot where I spent 10 days, sailing 8 days out of the 10 days I was there. Luckily we got the great conditions to do all the freestyle/wave & freeride sails. The new sails, graphics, colors and that new 3 batten sail is amazingly what you should get your hands on.
