FIRST AWT’S After having a sick trip in Tahiti and one week in Maui it was time to start the contest season. Antoine and I took advantage of this week in Maui to prepare the gear for the all the contest and and trips. It means we arrived in Santa Cruz with lots of bags. We got there just one day before the contest but we were unlucky with the condition because there was no wind, as well as during the whole event! There were still some little waves and it was sunny, way enough for Sam Bitter to make everyone happy by organizing a SUP contest which I did and I made one heat and was super close to get in the semi final. After Santa Cruz we had a couple days to drive up to Pistol River so we went to cruise in San Francisco for 2 days. Normally I don’t like big city and big city life but San Francisco is different and I really like it. We got in Pistol River on time to sail one day before the contest and get used to it. The first days of the contest the conditions were not at their best so the head judge decided to go thru the amateur, women, master. Then later in the week it became really good and we competed a little bit farther up north and it was side off, logo high in the sets. I was so happy that they made the call to move because it was real wave riding condition and that’s what i prefer :) The wind was perfect for the new Epic 4.3 which i like more and more. It allowed me to really go in the pocket of the wave but with a better control of the power of the sails. We made it until the semi final this day, but next day we had to compete in Pistol River, the real spot because it was better there. I was against Levi, which is a killer, Kevin Pritchard who has way more experience then all of us in contests, and Marcillio Browne, and it was kind of his favorite condition. I knew i had to give my best, especially in jumping cause it was strong wind and I was with the 3.9 Epic. At the end of the heat i was pretty happy because i landed a double water start and had some good

jumps but only one good wave. If I could find a second one it could give me a good score to be on top of the podium. I finally got third but i’m still happy with this result because it was a really hard heat. After that we head it to France to have a lite chilling time and do my birthday with my sister that I don’t see often. Next step is gonna be Pozo to do the trials because i didn’t get a wild card. With the new format of the PWA (only 32 rider and one wildcard) there is gonna be pretty much all the young locals who rip, plus Jeager Stone, Graham Ezzy and some more good riders so it should be fun and lot of action. COMPETING, TRAVELING, TRAINING
from slalom competing in Costa Brava with a 13th place finish with my TRX sails that are just amazingly fast and easy to use, and being finally competitive with the bigger guys feels so amazing to be on the slalom tour, then traveling back to bonaire to compete in the King of the Caribbean freestyle competition to get a not deserve 10th place as i know there was something not right with judging but well i can say that the new loco pro 4.8 & 5.2 that i use during the event is magical i could get better lift and easy planing and getting around is just magical, i love these sails.

After that i got back on the plane and was back to Europe to catch the next flight from Amsterdam to Turkmenistan. Getting there was a long journey but getting to know new location and meet people is a great experience. I remember landing in Turkmenistan and as i saw this sand storm for the first time in my life i always thought this was only on t.v but now i experience it in real life and the best thing was it’s amazing seeing people with shiny gold teeth. Gotta love that. GREAT TO GET BACK ON THE RACE COURSE June started with a long trip back from Costa Brava, Spain back to Maui after the finish of the first PWA event of the year. It was great to get back on the race course and Costa Brava really delivered this year for conditions. With good solid racing and good winds I was happy with my finish, even with a couple of mistakes my gear felt very good which is a great way to start the year. Back on Maui it was back to high wind sailing and getting ready for the Maui Slalom Series, two scheduled races in the month of June I was looking forward to some solid racing in epic Maui conditions on my small TRX’s and JP’s. The first race delivered with strong 6.6 winds it was a great day of racing and race practice. Going good on my small gear I was able to win both morning and afternoon sessions and had some great battles with Phil on the start line and at the marks. The second race we had a rare no wind day on Maui. Early on it looked like maybe it would pick up but it never came around, I maybe could have raced on my 9.3 but it was a very light day and the race was cancelled. The rest of June was spent working on gear and getting ready for the second PWA event in Turkmenistan. I did a lot of work on new fins especially small and medium sizes in early preparation for Fuerte. I found some really good new fins from Tectonics, great speed and great control a perfect set up for Fuerte. I also started to play around with some new ideas for starting on the new race sails for next year, some small changes but good ideas from Art already. Then it was time to head of to Turkmenistan, this was one of the longest hardest trips I have been on. It took six flights to get there, Maui-LA-NY-London-Istanbul-Ashgabad-Turkmenbashi. I was absolutely hammered by the time I got there, not even sure how many total hours it was but it was three red eye flights so I slept a lot once I finally got there. Did not know what to expect going there and figured it was going to be mostly light winds but the days before we started we saw everything from 5-40knots and all directions. So it is going to be an interesting week in this new and distant PWA stop. Aloha Micah Buzianis

SUMMER TIME ON MAUI Summer time on Maui, means that we are back in race sail development mode. The more consistent trade winds, flatter water and Maui Race series, provide perfect opportunities for testing and tuning. We are busy hatching ideas, building and testing prototypes, working to evolve what are already some of the most devastatingly fast sails, to the next level. It’s always an interesting and creative time that I look forward too at the loft. Summer also means kids outta school, and it’s been great having some fun family time. We’ve been keeping busy with Maja, doing soccer tournaments, surfing, sailing with Barry, gymnastics, camping and of course windsurfing. Starting to get creative with the kid windsurfing and I ended up “jury rigging” a tandem set up on an old beginner board that surprisingly worked OK. We even got planing with Maja holding on to a little 1.2 sail, while standing 2 feet from the nose. I’m not surprised that she said it was “a bit scary when the water started bubbling behind her” as she was completely up in the air during that moment. Aloha, Artur Szpunar

BACK TO THE WEST COAST! After an unforgettable Maui season it was time to head back to the west coast just in time for the start of the summer season! 11 oversized bags and two suitcases later Sarah and I were off Maui and San Francisco bound, where my beloved van had resided for the winter in the hands of Sunset Sailboard’s owner and good buddy Kevin Kan. Back on the mainland and back in the van, the only thing logical to do was, well, drive! First off was Santa Cruz and the AWT Goya Windsurfing Festival at Waddell Creek. After a night at Kai Katchadourian’s place decompressing from the trip and re-organizing the van, it was off to Santa Cruz for the first weekend of the month. As you probably know by now the wind never showed, but the weekend and event was amazing nonetheless. Glassy conditions provided epic surfing and SUP all weekend, and it was great to hang out on the beach with my parents, old sailing buddies, and all our friends from Maui out for the competition. More than just being on the water, it’s bringing all these windsurfers together for the weekends that make these events so special, and for that, Waddell more than delivered! Following the first weekend of the month in Santa Cruz we headed back to San Francisco for Xensr meetings as Dave was in town for a couple conferences that week, then it was back on the road and north on the 101 for Pistol River.

This was Sarah’s first time heading up to Pistol, and my first time driving the 101 up from the bay, so it was cool to experience the beautiful drive together for the first time. Though after so many hours, trees are fu&#$in trees if you know what I mean, and we were ready to wavesail. After almost two weeks of being on the road and no sailing, the blasting sand and head high waves looked like heaven to Sarah and I as we pulled off the highway at Pistol River. To top it all off, the weather and water was unusually warm, making Sarah’s first experience at Pistol a quite more pleasurable one than mine 5 years ago! We had a sick session, I was loving my 4.2 mutant in the side-onshore conditions, especially with the strong sideshore current I always had awesome power especially for backside riding. Camille was out on the 3.9 Epic just destroying it, I saw him throw a sick wave 360 right as the wave hits the sandbar and jacks up, and he landed it clean! On the 2nd day of the competition window the conditions turned on. We showed up at Pistol around 9am and there were already pretty good size waves rolling through, even some logo high ones on the outside. The wind was light so the call was made to launch the youths first, and Casey Rehrer and the rest of the groms got to business making the conditions look pretty fun and made the rest of us eager to hit the water. Unfortunately, the wind refused to build, however, rumors of Cape Sebastian firing caused us all to pack up and check it out. Contrast to the rock, the Cape was blasting with solid overhead+ waves rolling through for some down-the-line action. I was in the 2nd heat, and sailed my 5.1 quickly before immediately rigging down to my 4.6 just before my start. I

caught a few good waves and had a blast lining up some nice bottom turns and couple aerials, but couldn’t advance over legend Josh Stone or current PWA champion Brawzinho, so got ready for my next heat in this dingle-format bracket system for a 2nd chance. Josh sailed amazingly in our heat and beat Brawzinho, so I had the good fortune of sailing with Brawzinho again in my 2nd round heat, along with one of the best wavesailor/freestyler out of Brazil, as well as a good buddy of mine, Ian Mouro. I got lucky and caught a few sets in the heat and was able to keep it together to sneak past Ian, and with Brawzinho, advanced to the 3rd round. I raced back up to rig my 4.2 as it just kept getting windier and windier, and ran back down to the beach for my next heat with Kevin Pritchard, Josh Stone, and Brawzinho. Let’s just say I was pretty honored to ride with those 3 guys, two of my childhood heroes, the current wave champ, and all friends, I was smiling ear to ear as we were all standing at the water’s edge getting ready for the heat, but knew what my chances were, haha! The first wave I had was my best, and I was just upwind enough of Josh and KP to get it, which put me in a great mood to start my heat. But then I had a harder time finding waves, and at one point just found myself watching Brawzinho put on a show out there, nailing every trick in the book. I had one more decent wave and almost stuck my wave 360 at the end, but was unable to advance. The next day the comp headed back to the rock, and I had a blast freesailing and enjoying the almost majestic scenery. Ted at Inn of the Beachcomber was the ultimate host yet again in Gold Beach, and though I was a bit disappointed in how the head judge decided to run the heats, had a great time nonetheless with the AWT crew and epic conditions!

As Sarah and I were about to head north for Hood River, we got a call from KP that it might be good at Cape Mendocino, so we decided to head back south to check it out. It was blasting, but flat, so we made the call to turn around and drive straight to Hood River, all in a day- as I said, a LOT of driving! The feeling of coming back to where I’ve called home for the last 6 summers was indescribable, especially at 4:30am, and I was overjoyed to share this special place and friends here with Sarah for her first time. And let’s not forget about the conditions, our first three days back were 3.7 Legend at the Wall, 3.7 legend at the Hatch, and 3.7 legend at Dougs in a row, yew! Looking forward to a little more summertime here in the Gorge before taking off for a completely new adventure for me next month, back to Sarah’s home in New Caledonia! JUNE... THE MIDDLE ALREADY AND IT FEELS LIKE WE HAVEN’T EVEN STARTED YET. June treated us to being able to watch the results of a few competitions, both local and global, and considering our otherwise pretty tiny footprint in the industry, I am happy that there have been some great results. Two things really stand out to me... Taty on the race course, constantly showing awesome speed and planting the seed for ten more years of top level competiveness, and the growing voices of approval for the Epic wave sails and their perfectly tuned performance capability. Oh yeah, and Micah’s mountain man look. here’s to wild fur! On my home front there have been some challenges this month, (and last) with my mom’s health. She has needed lots of special care, even a week in hospital for a bout with pneumonia, but with extra focus she is now on her way back, and gearing up for her 99th birthday (which she shares with Mick Jagger ) near the end of July. This has kept us close to home and allowed a big spurt of gardening that is now paying off with lots of herbs and veggies from the new house. We also managed to get out on Cornelia with Art and his family two times. Both days were slow and relaxing and a sort of celebration to get Amanda back on the island full time now that her EMT training on Oahu is over. And Maja still has the enthusiasm for driving the boat, and especially stopping in the deep water and having a swim. I still have an idea that someday Maja will turn into a great helmsperson. She has the concentration and focus to keep the line and with a little schooling she could be great.
