POZO > (PERU?) > OMAN July was different then the two last years because I went to Pozo after three years doing the PWA. I was so motivated that I won my trial’s heat. I didn’t sail so bad in the first heat of the man event but I was against Ricardo Campelo who was just on fire, and finished 2nd in the contest.

So after this result I decided to go to Peru and try to make a good result there for the overall AWT ranking. But between Pozo and Peru i had this trip planned in Oman. So after two days traveling without much sleep I arrived there in the middle of the day, time to eat something and 1h later I was already on the spot. The waves are coming from a wind swell over there, so they’re small and really close from each other and there is this really strong (40 knots +) side off wind which allowed me to jump frickin high... like 15M. So this motivated me to jump higher and higher until I saw this good ramp and arrived full speed on it to make one of my higher jumps (around 17M) but the ramp was finally to small and to stiff for the speed I had. So on the take off I hade this short but intense shock that dislocated my shoulder so easy, i couldn’t believe it. I had a really hard time coming back on the beach and I was already thinking about if I could make it to the other contests and how bad it could be. Luckily this doctor who was there for vacation sailing helped me and put back my shoulder in the right place in the 20 min after.

Maui Monthly

From there all my plans changed, so I decided to come back to Guadeloupe to a really good doctor who knows a lot about knee and shoulder injury. I have an appointment beginning of August with him and he will tell me how bad is it and if I need a surgury. But I can tell you one thing: sometimes you pay the price when you take risks as I do and this time it was painful. Even if I need I surgury I hope it’s not too bad and no matter how long it’s gonna take, i’ll be back stronger. I will keep you upated next month.. enjoy the rides for me... Camille Juban

MICAH’S MONTH

no.110. June ’14

Well it certainly was an interesting week in Turkmenistan and the start of July. Turns out that crazy storm we had before the event was the five year storm and messed up the weather pattern and the wind. With some very early mornings and long days it was a fun event even though we weren’t able to finish it. I had two mornings in a row where I was on the water before sunrise, a nice place to watch the sunrise from but unfortunately I was not planning much so watching the sunrise was about all I could do. These early mornings led to long days as well final calls at around 8pm meant a long day of standby. After it was all over the trip back to Maui seemed even longer as the first night was spent in the airport checking in gear with forty other sailors in a very small cramped airport with tight security. Needless to say there were some short tempers and some tired unhappy guys but finally I got out of there and back to Maui.

Once back in Maui it was back to work testing, tuning working out and getting over the jet lag. Somewhere mixed in here I also had another Maui race series. I had missed one while I was in Turkmenistan but they only did half a day of racing as the wind died in the afternoon. Well this race was going to try and do the regular two divisions and throw in another division in the afternoon to make up for the ones that had no wind. The wind started off very good in the morning and after the first four heats we went back out straight away and right as we got to the start line the wind shut down. We waited for a bit but then the remnants of a tropical storm came through and brought the rain so it was called off. I did manage to win my morning division but it was unfortunate that the race series suffered another no wind hit.

Back to getting ready for travel to the next event in Fuerte, tried to sail as much as I could in windy conditions to get ready for the wind and chop in Fuerte. I also had to fit in moving house with my family from Camp One to Kuau. No more living on the beach on Stable road but closer to Ho’okipa now. I did manage to get it all done and get ready for travels to Fuerte. The trip over to Fuerte went pretty smooth and all my bags showed up in Fuerte on time. I had a nice day of sailing the day before the event, a good tune up to refresh the memory of the Fuerte waters. The event didn’t go quite as I had planned, with some lighter winds I had some tough heats being underpowered and some bad results made it hard to focus and fight like I wanted to. Once it was all over it was back to the airport and rush home to make it for my youngest daughter Dakotah’s third Birthday, if all goes smooth I will make it just in time for presents and birthday cake, please no delays...... JULY WAS ALL MOM July was damn hard work. The design whirl’d is always wanting more and more and Art has been tasking along with the exciting and the mundane to make it all look good and be ready for the fall. It’s been windy and a bit wet generally so there is always something going on at the beach, and the reward this month has been seeing Taty and Micah pushing each other into the top ten (five soon ????). It’s sad to hear of Camille wrecking himself in the middle of the season, but there is no gain without pain. All of them will be sure to keep MauiSails in the news, even though seriously outnumbered always. Lots of satisfaction in that. July is the birthday month for Mom. She was turning 99 !!!! We had a long list of partying to do and all the grandkids were in attendance. After a few days of reconnecting and doing fun stuff, we had a big party that took over a great small local restaurant. Mom was glowing from all the attention, but the icing on the cake (birthday version, of course) was getting her out on the Cornelia for a full day on the water, just the family for crew. She was a trooper all the way, climbing aboard over the bowsprit railing, off the dock, and then getting off the same way. I know 50 year olds who would struggle with that. She said that the day after her 99th birthday, sailing with her grandkids, was just the first day of her second childhood. I guess that’s what keeps her going and always looking for more... and more... and more... I sure hope I will be reporting a similar event in a year. Oh yeah.... I turned 68 in July. And wonder whether I’ll be climbing aboard in 31 years Barry Spanier

JULY WAS A ROLLER COASTER OF A MONTH! I’m starting to learn slowly that in life, as in windsurfing, sometimes you think you’re in complete control and everything is going as planned, then in a heartbeat you’re flat on your face after getting catapulted and everything isn’t quite as it seemed. But just like that you’re back up and going again, and it’s up to you to decide whether your session will end in smiles or tears. Sarah and I were booked to go to New Caledonia on July 9th to celebrate our wedding with her family and friends, and sail some epic conditions that I’ve been dreaming about since before we even met. But prior to our departure from the West Coast there were still some epic days to be had as Oregon was FIRING! The month started with a quick day-trip from Hood River out to Oceanside for some insane wavesailing. Perfectly powered on my 4.6 Mutant, the swell delivered and 6 of us were blessed with warm weather, warm water, overhead+ waves, and epic down the line action! It was the cleanest day I had ever seen at Oceanside, and I was stoked to get back in the waves! First run out I stuck a back loop, tacked, and caught a 5-turn wave, grinning from ear to ear! Last on the schedule before leaving Hood River was the AWT Freedom Frenzy on July 4th to celebrate my good friend Whit Poor’s, and of course our beloved nation’s birthday! Probably the most fun event I’ve been to, Sam Bittner put on a fantastic day of competition, and more importantly, hanging out at the beach with friends, celebrating the true joy of windsurfing!! It was the perfect way to end our quick trip to Hood River as only two quick days afterwards we were packed up and on our way south to LA to catch our flight across the Pacific.

Then disaster struck. Though we had filed all Sarah’s paperwork for immigration and travel authorization well in advance, there was a mistake by our immigration lawyer, and it cost us precious time to get her docs approved so we could leave. We had to risk hoping they’d come in before we left and drive anyways, but about halfway down to LA (that’s 9 hours of driving later) we spoke with the travel agency, and since her papers still hadn’t arrived, had to cancel the trip. Bummed beyond belief, we turned back around and headed to Hood River. Though we were pretty bummed not to be able to go and see Sarah’s family, we had some awesome days on the water for the rest of the month in the Gorge with our friends. Out east The Wall fired for two days, I mean blasted, just silly windy. I was lit on my 3.7, and the river swells were massive! We had a few epic sessions at the hatchery, from 3.7 jumping conditions to 4.4 freestyle, and also were able to make last gorge cup race of the month! The wind was all over the place, making for an epic rigging frenzy. Starting with my 6.3 in the morning for 2 races, I quickly moved to my 7.0, then 7.7, and finally the 8.4 before the wind lightened up in the afternoon. Of all the sails the 7.7 was my favorite! The new size for this year, the 7.7 has the perfect blend of low-end grunt to coast through the lulls or come out of crowded turns at the mark, yet still has the light handling and top-end speed that you’d find in the smaller sizes, making it so fun to ride all around!

Next month we plan to head to LA then hopefully New Caledonia if Sarah’s papers arrive, but as we’re starting to learn, sometimes you just gotta go with the flow! Either way I’m looking forward to spending part of the summer back in LA just in time for the Leo and Cabrillo season! Cya on the water, Casey Hauser US-634
