WINDY YEAR When I came back home after Maui i was waiting for one thing, to have the nice 10 foot north swell that we got the years before to sail the outside reef and surf those sick rights. But we got unlucky with the swells this year and didn’t get any of those, but it was windy pretty much every day. So some day we had 2,5 m of windswell on the south and north shore. Then I won the first wave contest of the year in Guadeloupe on the south point of the island. Conditions were pretty good and my friend, Antoine Martin, was pushing the level so it was a really good contest and also a good training for the next contest. And not so long after, I went to St Barth to make the "St Barth Fun Cup". That was really fun because I never race with good guys like Bjorn, Taty, Antoine Quetel and some good guy’s from Guadeloupe.

Motivated to do better I have been doing really good. I am so motivated. Motivated to do better from now on and in the future. FITNESS January I spent a lot of time Windsurfing, so much that I only spent probably six days no sailing due to taking days of no wind and also some days of rest because I can not overdue my muscles as I am doing personal training in the fitness. working on the whole body but doing more of self weight is getting me a really good feeling. Being on the gym gave me more energy and i have already been seeing improvement but for sure there’s more work to be done. but everything is coming along great. WINDSURFING I have been windsurfing so much, mostly training my freestyle on both Tacks and i really did improve most of the big move i can do in both directions and this makes me feel good. We have had good wind the whole winter and january just kept getting better, sailing most of the days on my 4.8 loco pro and few days on my loco pro 4.4. i have been posting a lot of video on my FACEBOOK ATHLETE PAGE which you can see at www.facebook.com/TatyNB9

Slalom I have also had 3 days of slalom sailing on my 5.5 TR9 sail and I have rigged the 5.5 on the RDM 100%. It sure feels better in handling and super light in yout hands compared to the normal SDM 75% mast. And with my ISonic 86 I managed to do great speed and really I can’t wait for the TRX. Most of all the motivation I have makes my windsurfing improve each day compared to last year. For now i’ll just keep training on and off the water and whenever the season begins I would like to see the results. Aloha Taty Frans NB9

back in Maui full time It was great to be back in Maui full time again. January 1 I arrived back on Maui after some holidays in Utah and it was great to be back in the warmth and wind. It hasn’t been a very good winter in Maui for wind and I was really hoping that it would turn around so I could get some good training and tuning in on my new TRX and new JP slalom boards. As soon as I got back I picked up the new sails and unpacked all the new gear and got it ready to go as soon as the wind was back.

I had to wait a little while though as the strange weather conditions continued the first few days and then strung out to the whole month. I don’t’ think I have ever seen so many Kona wind days in two or three months let alone in one month like I did in January. In the end most of the days that I did get on the water were over in Kihei with onshore Kona winds. The strength was good, lots of time on the 7.7, 8.4 and 9.3 which are the three main sizes it seems like we race on anyway. I also got in one ok day at camp one on my new Mutants, although the wind didn’t last long and after only about and hour I was underpowered on the 5.1 and then it died completely. There was also one crazy North windy day, just after mid day the wind shifted from light Kona’s to straight onshore at Kanaha and picked up to about 30knots. I really love sailing in these conditions but unfortunately I had some meetings that I had made already and missed this day altogether. Well with such little sailing last month I guess I am lucky that the first race of the season which was supposed to be in March in Margarita was pushed back to June. So now the first event is going to be Korea in May so I will have some more time now to get ready and make sure all my new TRX’s and JP slalom boards are going to be ready to go. That is if this strange weather ever straightens out and we do get some regular wind on Maui again and more than just a little bit here and there. Aloha Micah Buzianis USA34

r i a e h t n i s e l more mi a n i e n o d r e v e than I’ve single month January was an incredible journey for me, logging more miles in the air than I’ve ever done in a single month, safe to say I’ll be happy if I don’ t see the inside of a plane for a very, very long time! After a few glassy days back on Maui for the New Year perfect for surfing and SUP, I packed my gear bag headed off to Las Vegas. Not the typical place to bring a 3.8 Mutant, but it wasn’t for on the water action. After almost 2 years of development I went to Vegas to join the rest of the Xensr team to launch our wireless, real-time, 3D motion tracking product, the Xensr+. It was a very special trip for me, I was so stoked to show the tech world what we had produced just because we wanted to know how high we and our friends jumped while windsurfing.
We had hoped that the technology required to answer this question would prove useful to other industries, but none of us ever expected the feedback we received. Not only were CEO’s, engineers, buyers, media, and others from some of the most respected tech corners around the globe BLOWN away with the windsurfing action and contests we’ve generated around the globe in the last 3 years, they had never seen a device like ours yet to date. Turns out, windsurfing isn’t easy to accurately track, and if you can do that, well, you can do a lot of other things too! Needless to say we were all pretty stoked after a weeklong product launch at CES, and are looking forward to hitting the market this summer with our new family of wireless products. Wrapping up CES it was back to Maui for a quick week to recover, film some epic surfing at Jaws, then off to Cape Town, South Africa, for the Red Bull King of the Air. I was contacted by RedBull over the summer to head down with our XensrCases to provide real-time height and airtime measurements for this incredible event, where the top 24 kiters wait for the windiest day to try and do the craziest tricks they can think of, as big as possible. excited about the 2.5 week waiting period for a one day event, and packed my windsurfing gear up. The longest trip of my life, after arriving in Cape Town I was stoked to see a ton of my windsurfing friends there who were training for the upcoming season. Unfortunately on my first day on the water, I sprained my left foot landing an aerial, and was unable to sail for the rest of the trip. working at King of The Air, when they finally made the call for the contest, was incredible! Also, I was fortunate enough in CapeTown for a paddle out for Andre Paskowski. I met Andre back in 2009 when I went to Jericoacoara. He loved the idea of real-time 3D motion tracking since I first talked to him about it in 2009, and was one of my biggest advisors and supporters throughout the years, as well as a good friend. January got it all covered in the rush to Chinese New Year January is always the month where everything gets ready to come to a climax of production before the Chinese New year shuts down the whole country. Basically all manufacturing and commercial activity is over for around two weeks and then there is a months long lag after that so having the details and plans ready is a challenge for anyone making things in China. The fact is well known by now to all who are doing this and action is the the way around it.

Meanwhile, Art is banging on the wave door again with new ideas and experiments with using the new materials we developed over the last season. Conditions have been sort of yucky most of the month, lots of stormy wet days and plenty of contrary winds, but he still finds a way to get wet regularly to get the fine details worked out in his mind. He and others have been able to use the toughened version of our SRS mast lineup also with good result. Now I’m waiting for the return to the single head batten ’trend’ from the early 80’s to reappear (it worked pretty fine back then) and be treated like something new. And I love seeing Taty’s report about being super competitive in a "fun" regatta that includes a host of top pros getting to use their new 2014 stuff, while he gets by quite fast on his older sails and boards. There is huge talent in Taty and I’m sure we will see more and more of his racing skills as time goes on. Cornelia got a load of new covers this month. With Samantha still out of action (but getting better all the time), I have been concentrating on making covers for hatches, life rings, the windlass, and best off all, a unique deck bag for the big genoa we use all the time for Lahaina sailing. I have never been fond of the roller furling gear idea and like to be able to more easily change headsail size. The sail in the new bag is so easy to manage now, just a few clips and it’s put away and ready to go again. Other smaller sails can be set above the stored genoa, so it can stay in place when the wind comes up. On the less attractive side, I changed the engine oil and filters and cleaned the engine bilge. Somehow this job always got pushed back in favor of more fun things, but finally I had to concede. There’s nothing quite as fun as pumping hot oil in a tiny engine space :) I expect February to be a great month for sailing and whales now that the most unpredictable weather of winter has passed. The whole West side mountains are green and lush looking from the large amount of rain we have been getting over there... and if we don’t get big winds there should be a bumper crop of delicious mangos by late April, something we can really look forward to.
