AWT QUATRO DESERT SHOWDOWN. MAUISAILS ON TOP AGAIN! The 2013 AWT Quatro Desert Showdown in Punta San Carlos will go down as the most epic Pro/Am wave events in history. Day 4 saw more waves and even more wind with competitors competing on sail sizes from 4.5 down to 3.5. Plus the long heat lengths and super fair “second chance” bracket system has kept a smile on every riders face. Let’s check out the final action.

PRO HIGHLIGHTS

With the wave rolling through at the point and tons of wind it was time to get going with round 3 of the Pro division. The pressure was on as from now on only the top two riders from each heat would remain in the contest. Taking the top spots in this round were Camille Juban, Levi Siver, Morgan Noireaux and Keith Teboul, while also advancing with 2nd place scores were Russ Faurot, Jake Miller, Bernd Roediger and Kevin Pritchard. The quarterfinals started with a heat featuring Juban, Siver, Faurot and Miller. Siver took the heat laying down some massive gouges in his set waves and landing some huge aerials. The battle for the other advancing spot was close as Faurot and Miller both hit some massive aerials while Juban crashed going for a couple extremely late hits on a couple huge point waves. But Juban scored big on a nice set wave late in the heat giving him enough to advance. The second quarterfinal was an absolutely stacked heat featuring Noireaux, Roediger, Teboul and Pritchard. The semi-final heat was possibly the best heat of the entire contest in terms of talent and conditions. The wind was up, the set waves were rolling through and the heat featured Juban, Siver, Pritchard and Teboul. And what a show they put on! Teboul battled hard but didn’t quite find the waves the others did and finished the heat in 4th position; The fight to advance was extremely close between the other three riders. Part way through the heat Siver landed an insane Air Taka on a nice wave that seemed to clinch his spot in the final. It came down to Juban’s huge head-dip aerials versus Pritchard’s powerful roundhouse turns. Pritchard even stuck a one-footed aerial right in front of the judges, but it just wasn’t enough to take down Juban. So the final was set: Siver versus Juban! The final started with both Siver and Juban catching some moderate size waves and putting down similar scores. It looked like Juban was searching for massive aerials while Siver was concentrating on his powerful wave hacks. Part way through the heat Siver caught a nice scoring wave but couldn’t hold on to his Air Taka attempt in the Chili Bowl. Juban took advantage landing a nice one-handed aerial at the point with another clean aerial in the Chili Bowl. It was definitely a tough heat on the judges… who would come out on top? No one knew until the awards ceremony. In the end event announcer/beach marshal Tony Litke called out Camille Juban as the winner of the 2013 AWT Quatro Punta San Carlos Desert Showdown. Congrats to both riders on an insanely close and entertaining final heat!

WOMEN FINAL HIGHLIGHTS

no.99. July ’13

It was once again time for the battle of Ingrid Larouche versus Fiona Wylde in the Womens division of the 2013 AWT tour as they met in the finals both at Santa Cruz and Pistol River. Unfortunately it wasn’t the best heat for set waves and both riders were seriously overpowered, but still both made the most of the conditions. Larouche started the heat off with some slashy cut-backs on a couple smaller waves that were just a little more complete then Wylde’s. However, Wylde’s turns and wave selection improved as the heat went on making it extremely close. Following the heat neither rider nor spectators on the beach knew who won. In the end Larouche scored just a few fractions of a point more than Wylde to take the title. Congrats to both riders on an extremely close battle!

MASTERS FINAL HIGHLIGHTS

This was a highly anticipated final of the AWT’s overall Masters division leader, Ferdinando Loffreda, versus Norm Roediger. Both riders have been also been competing in the pro division and have been ripping this week. Loffreda started the scoring off catching some smaller waves on the inside of the point and laying down some decent turns and aerials, but Roediger’s strategy of waiting for the bigger set waves on the outside seem to pay off. Roediger took the heat with some massive rides with powerful cut-back turns all the way from the point through the Chili Bowl. Congrats to Roediger on the win and Loffreda on a great final heat.

IN BETWEEN CONTESTS Usually in the summer I never stay in Guadeloupe because there is no more condition. This year my step brother and a couple more friends who study in France and who I never have the chance to see came in Guadeloupe in July. So after my good trip in California and Oregon, I decided to stay in Guadeloupe to spend some time with them for a little less then one month. I actually sailed one time because we get those kind of hurricane in summertime until September. I was with the 4.2 Legend full power.. It was cool to stay at home and just cruising, go to new waterfalls that I just discovered and stuff like that. Of course I was training physically with Jimmy, the guy who train me when i’m home. Photo by AmericanWindsurfingTour.com

Around the 24 everyone was living the island and that was the perfect timing because i had to go in san carlos (baja mexico). I drove down to Mexico with Marc Bitoun who I met in Santa Cruz and who won the AWT Amateur in Pistol River. We got there one day before everyone came and I have to say, it was a good idea because waves were there already and we could train on the spot without so much people. Then the AWT crew arrived and the first couple days of the contest the waves dropped a little but it was way enough to have fun and start the contest with the first round of Master, Amateur, Women etc..

On the forecast, the peak of the swell was in the middle of the week so we also did one or two Pro’s round to have the final on the best day. First days the wind was good for my 4.2 but on the day of the final the wind was picked up and I was kind of overpowered with the 3.8, but that was the good call. Keith told me it was really close in the final but the choice of my wave was better and that’s a part of why I won. Now I have a good ranking in the overall and I just can’t wait to sail in Peru, where i’m gonna go for a little less then one month. Camille Juban

A SLOW START TO A GREAT FINISH! Stitches through the palm of one hand, and a sprained thumb on the other hand from my biking accident at the end of June kept me on the sideline for the first 2 weeks of the month. With the Freestyle Frenzy scheduled 17th-21st, and with the wind blowing everyday in July in the Gorge, it wasn’t easy to sit and watch, and I had a few very short (and painful) sessions on my 2.9. July was probably the windiest I have ever, I mean EVER seen. Every day seemed to be a 2.9 day!!!

The hands felt ok enough to compete in the Frenzy, and I manage to win the freestyle and big air parts of the competition. The conditions were typical of the Gorge and, despite the forecast, we saw 35-40 mph wind the whole window of the event. I used my 69 L quad and my legend 2.9 for most of my heats and threw moves like shovets, forwards, pushloops and grubbys! The event was a real success with tons of great action, good energy and fun! Check out the video: http:// vimeo.com/70658957 Then off to Mexico for the 3rd stop of the AWT; Baja desert showdown. It had been over 3 years since I last came to Punta San Carlos, and this trip reminded me how this place needs to be yearly destination for me. It is such an amazing spot for wavesailing; long, clean, uncrowded waves. We had firing conditions for the event! Logo+ high waves in the sets and wind!!! Too much wind even for the sails I brought; 3.7 legend and 4.2 mutant. I really missed not having my 3.3 especially in the final against Fiona Wylde who had been sailing some solid heats through amateur and youth division on her 3.2. It wasn’t easy to sheet in and make turns being so overpowered but thanks to my great sails and to Camille Juban’s awesome custom 68L quatro board, I finished on top. Oh yeah, did I mention that my board got stolen on the way down for the contest? In San Diego somewhere there’s a 69 L Fanatic quad that has my name on it… Not easy to come back home from such a fun week of sailing, hanging out and competing. Thanks again to Sam Bittner and the AWT and Solosport for putting up such a great event!! Next stop, Peru (??) Ingrid Larouche

GORGE AND SAN CARLOS It’s hard to believe July has already come and gone, but just like that another awesome summer month on the west coast has come to a close. This month was jam-packed for me, running and competing in contests in the gorge, heading down to San Carlos for the AWT event, and getting ready for the launch of our flagship product at Xensr, the XensrCase!!! The month kicked off with a bang in the gorge with solid winds to celebrate the 4th of July, with days on end of 3.7 Legend/4.0 Loco sessions! It also provided perfect conditions for us to test the latest batch of XensrCases before our first big event of the summer, a kitesurfing big air contest out at Rufus. The 1st annual Huckfest went off without a hitch, and was the perfect warmup for the following weeks’ revival of the Windsurfing Freestyle Frenzy and the Big Air at the Hatchery.

After 5 year’s without a freestyle event in the gorge, Sam Bittner of the AWT, Greg Stiegel of the CGWA, and myself, along with a solid crew of local sailors, came together to bring back one of the premier Windsurfing events in the US with $1500 cash prize from Xensr. Sam had asked me to be head judge, and I was honored and thrilled at the opportunity. Of course the forecast was far less than ideal, and with a forecast of wind for only 6-11am on the first of our 5-day window, I made the call for a 6:30am skippers meeting on Day 1 with the hopes of at least getting through a single elimination of the Freestyle Frenzy. As I pulled into the Hatch at 6:15, the fog was stacked in the corridor and the wind was fully filled in, and, as Richard Hallman predicted to me, it fired! By 7:30am competitors hit the water with 2.9s-4.2s for an epic showdown. I was able to run in from judging just in time to grab my 4.0 loco for my heat, but was unable to advance against Wyatt Miller, who went on to take 2nd place. On the women’s side, Ingrid Larouche absolutely killed it on her 2.9 legend, showing off her high-wind expertise with big forwards, clean shoveits, nice spocks and grubbys on the inside, and a push loop attempt that had the crowds on the rocks screaming! For the Big Air, it was Gorge-Air Master Dale Cook taking home the win with an 18.81ft jump in rapidly diminishing winds.

Following the freestyle frenzy we packed the van and headed south to my parent’s house in LA to regroup and head down to San Carlos for the AWT Quatro Desert Showdown. I’ve been heading down to San Carlos since 2007 and this was by far one of the cleanest swells I’ve ever seen. A solid south combined with blasting winds provided epic conditions for the entire week. I spent most of my time on my 3.8 and 4.2 Mutant, as did Camille and Ingrid. By Tuesday the call was made to start the contest, and conditions couldn’t have been any better. My first heat was against Levi Siver, Jake Miller, and Jonah Lepak, a west coast legend. I had some solid waves during my heat, and finished third behind Levi and Jonah. Keith Teboul, head judge, tried a new bracket system where everyone except the 1st place finisher immediately competed again, combining a double/single elimination format into one. In my 2nd heat I was able to advance with my 3.8 Mutant to end off the 1st day of competition. Day 2 was even windier, and my first heat was against Russ Faurot and Camille Juban. Both sailors killed it, and I was unable to advance out of my heat, but happy to end in 9th. Camille went on to take 1st place, with some of the sickest wave-rides I’ve ever seen down there! Also sailing out of her mind was Ingrid Larouche, who held down a 3.7 Legend in blasting winds to link together smooth turns and powerful hits to take another 1st place finish- congrats to both!

A LOT OF TRAVELING AND COMPETING I have been up to much traveling and competing in both National and PWA event this whole month. No time to rest. First things first… Aruba Hi-Winds was the first event I did this July. That happened from the 2nd till the 9th of July. It was just great to go back to Aruba and compete and meet great people there. The wind had been good strong and the only sail I used the whole time was the TR9xt 7.0 with my Isonic 107. You can also watch all of the races on Youtube on the name of kuma aruba hi winds part1-10. I really love the TR9xt 7.0. This sail works really good in those choppy and windy conditions of Aruba and even when the strong gusts hits I was going faster and with such great handling. Good Job Art, Phil, Barry and Micah. I finished 1st slalom, 1st long distance, 2nd freestyle. In the freestyle I was on my Loco Pro 4.8 and my Flare 9, perfect gear even though I was a bit underpowered but made the best out of it. But even though Kiri won, I still felt like I was really sailing good. Fuerteventura PWA Freestyle. I went there six days before in order to train and get used to the conditions. We had five days before the event very strong conditions. I was always on my 4.0, and with good swells. As soon as the event started the wind got lighter and the whole previous days conditions changed. So this made an effect on me, as all the things I wanted to do like double loops, and pushloops, wasn’t possible anymore :(, too bad…. but I was sailing very carefully and I guess this made me lose my heat as I was in going into the top 5. I finished 7th which is okay, for now, I sit now in 7th overall we still have two more events to go and I want to make my last two results better. The loco pro 4.0 is now one of my best sail size, this sail really worked perfect in high and low wind and I have been sailing with this size in all of my heats even when most guys were on 4.5. Back on Bonaire on the 29th for just two days and I made a quick packing in for my slalom gears and headed down to Curacao to compete in the 2013 Endless Summer Sport & Festival event. ON MAUI ALL MONTH Wow it was great to be back in Maui for a whole entire month, and good thing because there was a lot going on for me!!! First of all it was the 4th Of July always a big celebration in the USA and boy did we have a good time with my family. We went over to the Maui Country Club where they had all kinds of food and games for the kids. They also have an annual fishing tournament in the pond on the golf course and my boy Lance managed to catch a big old carp and won with a 24" long lunker. Next was the Maui Race Series and the Maui County Championships on July 13th. I unfortunately had been feeling sick most of July so far and was on some pretty strong antibiotics so I wasn’t really feeling 100%. No excuses though as it was a tough fleet with a couple of guys from the PWA tour here and Peter Slate completely on form won the Pro Division handily. I did manage to come back in the age groups and win so wasn’t such a bad day after all. The next and final Maui Race Series was on July 27th and I was back to 100% and completely focused and ready to go. I managed to get eight bullets and win both the Pro and the age group a good feeling as it is getting close to time to head out to Turkey for the next PWA race.

We also managed to get some sail testing in with some masts and battens to get ready for the full on development of the TR-10. While we mainly were just playing around with different configurations of battens to get better performance out of the sails we were also trying some different battens and different set ups to try and save some weight. I think we found some very positive alternatives to what we have now we will still continue to work on it with the new TR-10"s. The biggest thing for me this month though was having to pack up my entire house/ property to move. We sold our house and it is a big job to move out a family of five who has lived at a house for over eight years. This took a lot of time to organize all this and luckily I had my mom and my brother come out to help other wise we wouldn’t have pulled it off. I am pretty excited about a new adventure for me and the family. With this big project and fitting in a few days of work at Second Wind it was a quick month but I did manage some very solid days of testing and training and am looking forward to going to Turkey a few days early to get even more tuned up. I CAN’T WAIT FOR WINTER! July was an interesting month, I got back to Maui acer being on the main land for a month, the waves weren’t to great and the wind was crazy. I ended up surfing more than I windsurfed. I had a few really good days completely maxed out on my 3.8 mutant. I landed 2 up wind 360s on the wave, that was a first and i perfected my stalled forwards as best i could but the high wind isn’t my favorite. Its amazing how i was sailing my 3.8 while guys that weigh twice as much as I do were on 4.0s. The range on the mutant is a complete mutation from the normal 4 batten wave sails, it actually has range and putting downhaul on the sails works and de powers the sail. Im starting to get ready for the winter, I’ve been training for the past month or so, trying to build up my strength. Winter seems close but it feels like its been a century or two since I’ve been on a real wave. I can’t wait for winter! Casey Rehrer

JULY ALMOST BLEW US AWAY What a great summer month July is here in Maui. We always have tons of wind and there are two usually two good Maui Race Series events so we can test the new TR race sails for 2014. We have been making some small adjustments to shaping in several sizes and getting into trying some more aggressive things with some others. In addition, there are some new materials that hopefully will be developed successfully that will enhance the performance and durability. Micah has been testing some of the things already and is very positive about the results and the changes are easy to execute and offer excellent weight savings. One of the new projects on an older theme has been to bring the best RAF slalom sail ever, the Pursuit, in line with the latest thinking in aspect ratio, essentially taking what we have been learning from the TR and Titan GS to bring the balance and handling in line with what we know to be working well now. Art has already hit the magic button with the shaping and luff curves on the first protos so we are excited to get the entire range working like a dream. Lucky for him, there has even been enough wind throughout the month so he can get plenty of afternoon time on the water and be thinking about Mutants and Locos and the like. This has also been a good month for Cornelia, both the boat and the old gal, my Mom. Seems like the Maui Monthly was also seeing a big milestone as well, since this is the 100th edition of our little newsletter. July saw Cornelia turn 98, me 67, and my old friends from Tahiti, Patrick (71) and Leslie (60) Humbert also got in on the party, a real Leo affair. As for Cornelia the boat, she got sailed some more and then received a brand new set of Dyneema double braid lifelines, an experiment with modern materials that should prove to be another upgrade, saving lots of weight and cost, since we can use simple splices and lashings to do the attachments, so no we look just like the most contemporary ocean racers. And I love the look and feel of the rope in your hands when on the water. Finally, just at the end of the month we got a visit from Flossie, a nasty little tropical storm that came right up our southern exposure and gave us a night of flashing lightning, vicious winds, and buckets of rain. I was on board and keeping things under control most of the night as Flossie roared through, thankfully doing very little damage other than some chaffed lines and a damp feel down below. Aloha Barry Spanier

FOCUS ON RACE AND FREERIDE SAIL DEVELOPMENT Summer on Maui is the time to focus on Race and Freeride sail development and with plenty of wind and the local Maui Race Series we have plenty of opportunity for testing and development. We are focused on all the variables that make our Race sails perform, from the luff curve and seam-shaping relationships to developing and testing new sail and batten materials. We are also putting great effort into our mast program with the goal of maximum bend consistency and product durability. As we develop new concepts and prototypes, we have the ultimate Maui based race sail testing crew of Micah Buzianis and Phil McGain to put them through their paces. We also appreciate the feedback that we receive from our riders around the globe and it is all taken into consideration during development. Following in the footsteps of the TR series race sails our RAF slalom and Freerace models are getting considerable attention this season in an effort to provide a taste of MauiSails performance pedigree to a wider audience. Many windsurfers get jaded living on Maui and get in a habit of sailing only the “better days”. Personally, I spent enough of my teenage years staring at glassy water that I recognize that a below average day on Maui is still epic by global standards and for this reason still enjoy a marginal summer windswell day on the northshore. And though it may not compare to the epic mast and a half sessions of winter, once in a while the windswell will crank up a bit and achieve the level of “above average”. The most worthwhile experiences of summer have been with the family and when our 8 year old daughter said she wanted to learn to windsurf this summer, she didn’t have to twist my arm. So far she has been stoked on it and is already requesting custom sails. Aloha, Artur Szpunar
