JAN FOR TATY http://on.fb.me/Xdn25g First of all I would like to say I hope everyone who is reading this had a great new year and that they ate a lot because this year will be a lot of time in the gym to get that belly slimmed down... hahahaha, no more of that turkey and wine and all that December eating. January is the time to sail and sail and get the mind in the windsurf scene. I had a great month, spending most of my time freestyle training and at times jumped on the slalom gears so that I can help Kiri Thode tuned up with his slalom gears. My little time that I am spending on slalom gears TR8 makes me enjoy sailing at the most and when i get back on the freestyle gear i really don’t feel like using my slalom

http://on.fb.me/126FMmw gear, those Loco freestyle sails and my Flare are so good and each day I enjoy sailing my Loco’s it’s just amazing how great this sport is :). After all that training and enjoying the freestyle Kiri, Amado and I spent two days filming with the Go pro, and we got some Sick moves which I put on my Facebook wall - http://www.facebook. com/taty.frans The first day we had powered up 4.4 conditions in Kralendijk and the 2nd day of filming was at Sorobon Lac bay where I was using the Loco 4.8.

Y LOCO FRANS http://on.fb.me/XsxkuN

http://on.fb.me/W33zDc

All that freestyle excitement changed to some serious Formula racing for the 2013 Heineken Curacao regatta. As far the Formula equipment being transported to Curacao from Bonaire, that was an issue but got solved as I had to send my gears 2 days before I fly as the flight from Bonaire to Curacao are small planes. In the end the gears arrive okay and the competition was on.

In the end I finished 1st place and I was feeling pretty fast as I am so slow in going upwind with Formula board, but had some small tips from Remi Villa that helped a lot :) thanks.

On Open water formula sailing with wind blasting 15-18 knots on the first day and 18-20 knots the second day, it sure was a rough regatta race. I had my TR8 10.0 with my Starboard Formula LWR Board and my ZFin S-70 :) great combination but could have been better if I had a 68cm Zfin.

Overall i had a lot of sailing this month and I feel good with the amount of time i spend on the water..

Well writing this report I am taking my flight to St martin together with the Curacao Crew in order to compete in the 2013 St Barths Fun Cup.

Take care Ya’ll Taty Frans NB-9

CAMILLE JUBAN KIDS SHOW

January has been a great month for me because I organise the "Camille Juban kids show" in Guadeloupe. I had this idea because there were no competition for the kids in Guadeloupe when I was young and that something I was happy to do. So I was like ok, I’ll organize one myself now with the help of a windsurf center of some friend, I also ask all my sponsors if they could support this event too and almost all my sponsors gave some little gift for all the kids. It took me a bit of time to organize it well but in the end we had just enough condition to do it and all the rest was going better then I expected. We could manag to have a result and I was really happy to see all those kids sooo motivated and so happy that I could make it for them. That gave me the power to think about organizing one even better for next year, on top of that all the local media was really suportive... Thanks all the sponsors who support me on this event. Here is the video from the event http://bit.ly/VLc6xZ Beside that we had couple windsurfing sessions but not as good as December and some amazing surf sessions. Camille Juban

JANUARY IS THE NEW BEGINNING Here we are already well into the new year and already lots is happening. There are TR-9s getting out to the world and so far the reaction has been very good. Some excellent results in FW in Australia from Steve Walsh and Remi Dunoyer along with outside reports of their excellent upwind speed are making us feel we have gotten onto something good with the latest evolution of the lower aspect outlines. We have also heard from France that testing is showing very competitive speed in slalom as well. Meanwhile Art has been hammering away on the new versions of Mutant, Loco, and Legend for the Spring development and testing. Taty has been after us for some time to take our understanding of four batten shaping so successful with the Mutant and apply it to the Loco, so we have some prototypes ready for testing next week. In addition we are always continuing our search for unique materials that we can call our own. To do this we work with our supplier, Dimension Sailcloth in Connecticut, and do our best to give them ideas they can execute on their laminate machines. As always, the goal is to bring the weight down, keep the stability and strength up, and if possible, lower cost to the end user. As most of you already know though, there are three things... weight, strength, and cost... and

you can have usually only two :). So that challenge is now getting real with sample materials being delivered for production and the rest of the testing to come (this is the part that Art LOVES!!). As always we will not go to anything that doesn’t meet the standard of our normal performance and durability. Art also designed a slick ’adaptor’ that will compensate for any SDM mast that is slightly smaller diameter. This part will be available soon.

January is also the month of crazy whale sightings both on the North shore and the South side. The big happy fellas and gals are busy having babies and more spectacularly, mating. Sailing around off Lahaina is like a strange game of hide-and-seek with huge bodies that just pop up when you least expect them to, or they perform rituals of fin waving, tail slapping, and giant leaps in the air. When you are just sliding along doing four or five knots and suddenly twenty feet away something as large as your boat comes completely out of the water, landing with a splash that looks like an explosion, it can be pretty exciting. As normal we went out on New Years Day to set the tone for the year and were treated with perfect wind, a good crew, and plenty of Cetacean fun stuff.

On the ’reconstruction’ side the deck grinding and preparation are now partially done and those sections are ready for the application of our new Raptor Deck developed by Dan Kaseler of Quantum Sails in Seattle. Basically, Cornelia will feel like an SUP underfoot, with this soft EVA foam covering, so grippy and comfortable at the same time. No more skinned knees and elbows and a pleasure to sit or lay on. It should be on the bow and stern areas by next month and I’ll report on how it works for us. It’s a bit of a gamble for a cruising yacht, but if you never try, you never learn. Aloha till next time. 2013 STARTED OFF WITH A BANG IN BAJA

With solid winds nearly everyday of the month, and great sessions to be had, slalom, freestyle, and even wave! That’s right, I was surprised too, but the weather forecast held and I got to experience my first true ’el norte’ in Baja. With the solid North winds blowing all the way down the Sea of Cortez, they can produce some serious swells that hit the sandbars here and form some fun, long waves. On the day the Norte hit, I found myself lit on my 4.2 Ghost by 8am with solid overhead port tack waves for the entire day.

On the 2nd weekend of the month we headed down to Los Barriles for the 3rd annual Lord of the Wind Showdown. It was a packed weekend with Course, Slalom, and Freestyle competing to be had. On the first day the call was made to start with course racing, and we had 3 solid races where I was perfect on my TR-9 8.4. The new TR-9 is really incredible, so light with easyhandling and amazing upwind/downwind performance. I was truly blown away with the angles I could hit with speed. Unfortunately, I made a couple tactical mistakes with my lay-lines, and wound up taking 2nd behind training partner Tyson Poor. After the Showdown it was back to La Ventana for another week of solid winds. I was able to get in another wave day, blast over to the island and back lit on my TR-8 5.9 for the double cross, and sneak in another 3 slalom races at Playa Central in perfect 7.0 conditions before having to get on a plane for Salt Lake City and the winter Outdoor Retailer. A change of climate, it was great to get to Salt Lake City, where we officially launched the XensrCase, a 3D motion tracking accessory for any action sport- windsurfing, kiteboarding, SUP, moto, ski, snow, mountain bike, and more. Stay tuned for more updates in the newsletter as we start utilizing the XensrCases back on Maui this spring! Cya on the water, Casey Hauser US-634

UNEVENTFUL JANUARY Once the New Year was over it was back to some regular training in the gym and some on the water testing and tuning. I was still trying to decide which boards I will be registering for 2013 racing season but I think I finally managed to figure out which ones it will be. I was only really trying to decide between the JP Slalom 66 or 68 with the 59 and 80 going in the mix for sure. In the end it looks like the 66 is going to be the one. I also spent some time trying out some new fins and trying to dial in the sizes and models I will be using for this season. Fins are always an ongoing process but with the new sails and boards decided on I like to try and get some ideas and feeling well in advance to maximize testing and training.

It was a pretty uneventful January in Maui this year. With most people still on holiday the New Year was pretty quiet and relaxed. I spent most of the time hanging with the family getting on the water either wave or slalom sailing and when there was no wind on the SUP’s.

I also started my travel planning for the season and it looks like my season isn’t going to officially get under way till May with the first PWA slalom in Korea. It is also looking like quite a few trips from Maui to Europe again as most of the events are pretty spread out. I don’t really mind this as it usually means more time in Maui so I will probably be able to do most of the Maui Race Series but it also means a lot more airplane time which isn’t quite as fun as it used to be. With plenty of wind so far this year in Maui this later start will mean I will have some extra training and testing time to fill up the tank before I start the real season which is always good!!!

The little bit of down time that I did have due to no wind in January I used to get my new Maui Sails booms and masts ready for this year. With the new adjustable outhaul kit for the 170 slalom booms I had to get them all dialed in the right spot and get the rope lengths correct for each sail size so as to not have to much excess rope/ weight hanging around. Same on the 190 booms always trying to get them set up as clean and efficient as possible. Now that most things are in place it just comes down to doing the work and putting in the time to be ready. So far so good for 2013!!! Aloha Micah Buzianis

We have been in full winter mode on Maui, with North swells rolling in, turning the ocean into the playground that we all love. Our goal is always to create the ultimate tools to make the most of the experience. Wave sails like the Mutant, Ghost and Legend are dreamt up, designed and refined through our daily pilgrimage to the surf and the ideas that form both on and off the water. Wave sailing combines such a balance of subtle elements that can only be understood through the experience. The smooth and instantaneous transition from driving power to effortless release. The softness to pump and give comfortable power in light wind while remaining totally balanced and stable in the most unruly gusts. Outline contours shaped to fit neatly in the pit, stay balanced sailing along and also maneuver smoothly through the air. It is no wonder that sail and board designs continue to evolve as we continue to refine our interface with the air and water. We have also been steadily receiving news from customers around the globe about their first experiences with the new TR-9 race sails. Results of local competitions, racing with friends and speed sessions have inspired a flood of positive feedback and excitement about the new race sails long before the PWA tour begins. The most common comments have referred to “excellent balance”, “tremendous speed” and “more locked in stability”. This year especially with the complete redesign and recent release of the Titan GS, we expect to conjure more excitement from the freerace ranks as well. With a lower aspect ratio and wider, laminate sleeve, the new Titan GS has more in common with the TR race sails than ever before. Aloha, Artur Szpunar

JAN AT KAHANA January was a slow month. We had great waves but little wind. Despite the lack of wind, I had a few good sessions. I sailed for the first time in Kahana with Ferdinando, Morgan and Kauli, the wind was side off and the waves were around head high it was super fun and a great experience. 3.8 Mutant, as always was perfect. I have heard Levi and Ferdinando and many other pros talk about how good Kahana is and I can’t believe that I have been sailing here for almost 10 years and have never sailed there. It is an awesome spot. Anytime I get the opportunity to sail a new spot I take it because not only do you gain experience but you see so many new things and its always an adventure. It was an incredible view, sailing in looking at the back side of the West Maui Mountains and sailing out looking at the island of Lana’i. A few days later, I scored "The Pit" and saw Micah Buzianis killing it on a Mutant. That was the first time I’ve seen Micah not on a race sail and he shreds! The waves were really fun, around logo high with an occasional mast high set, my favorite. Everyone was on 4.7’s and 5.0’s but I was powered up on my 3.8 and getting some good airs. I had another few days at Ho’okipa but they were pretty small. I spent most of the month swimming and surfing. I am so ready for next month and some strong trade winds with big waves!
