mauisails takes it all

With my last travel on the agenda I realized that it’s one month away to the end of 2012. November is in the past and looking back on what has happened and trying towrite about it seems to be a piece of cake, but at times your head can’t get in the zone to do so. Each day I open www. mauisails.com just because I want look at those TR-9 sails and the Mutant. I wonder How Art and Barry created such sail with stylish graphics and design I just have to wait couple months before I can get my hands on them. For sure it will be worth the wait. I receive my renewal of contract for 2013 so I am pretty sure that I will be on tour another year with MauiSails so how great is that:)??. My colors for the TR-9 would be the red/white combo and for the LOCO probably I will switch to the green/white/blue combo. This month I made my last trip for 2012 where I flew to Thailand "Bangkok" where I will again take part on the Starboard R&D project. Litteraly a 2 days travel from Bonaire to Bangkok was just tiring. I had10 days that I couldn’t get in the time zone but after that it all became normal.Spending 10 days in Pataya city waiting for the wind, where there were days of rain, thunder, and lightning but I can’t complain because it was warm so that’s good.Remi and I tested the Phantom board in Pataya. We had 2 good days to test that board and some great results.

W O W W O W WO

After that we went back to Bangkok city on the 26th of November to pick up my Starboard freestyle Flare boards and got on the flight to Vietnam to arrive at Mui Ne beach and stayed in a super hotel, the Moon Village Resort. The wind was 25+ everyday where I sailed the whole 4 days on my Loco4.8 and was great conditions to test the 8 prototype freestyle boardsand had time to help Tiesda test the 16 prototype Kode. So in total Itested 24 boards and with such great conditions we had great results. Sailing in all wind and sea conditions with the LOCO’s, from Bonaire, Maui, Sylt, Vietnam, Austria, Fuerteventura and many more places. I can say that these sails really do work, and they can handle it. You just have to push your limit:). I am back in Thailand at this moment for the modifying of the freestyle boards and then I’ll fly back to Vietnam in December with Remi to do the final test on the freestyle boards, plus begin with the 1st testing forthe light weight formula boards. Take care ya’ll, enjoy windsurfing, and make sure to order your MauiSails, you will 100% regret not having one. :). All the best Taty Frans NB-9

MAUI TIME

As you know, in the beginnig of November the Maui Makani Classic was still on in great conditions. My familly and friends from Guadeloupe was still there too so we had the AWT prize giving and all enjoy to the max as I was in the first place in the overall ranking. So after this we all had time to hang out and sails together. And then little by little they all left so I was feeling kind of lonley, just one 19 years old kid from Guadeloupe that I know since longtime Antoine Martin stayded to train, and we got lucky because right after the contest we had like 3 consecutiv swell in two weeks but then the two last week was a little bit slow cause it was raining and the wind was too light to sails. But it’s cool and I’m happy because during this month I improve and I got used to the Mutant sail even more, look’s like Antoine Martin improved a lot too. While I’m writing this I’m on my way to go home and want to thank’s all the MauiSails crew who helped me so much this year. Aloha Camille Juban

Most the real work has been completed for the TR9 and once again we have pushed to the last moment and made good progress on all aspects of the design and quality. A new look logo, refinements of shape and twist to enhance speed and handling. It’s a never ending process but at some stage you have to say “we have achieved our goals for this race sail”, and send off the final designs for production. In fact our first production run has just finished and will start to get shipped out all over the World. Wind conditions for November have been usually light, but we have been able to get on race gear and some wave sailing days. So lots of X training has kept me sane and in shape ready for the winter swells. Aloha, Phil McGain

MONTH OF RELAXATION November is usually a month of relaxation and recovery and some extra fun out side of windsurfing. We had just finished off the TR-9 development and very happy with our final results I had some well deserved time off plans. It was hunting time of year and I had my annual trip to South Dakota and Utah planned for November 1-14. I wasn’t really looking forward to more travel but this sort of trip made it pretty easy plus it was a very short flight to Utah compared to what I normally am used to. Right off the plane my brother picked me up in Utah and after unpacking and organizing I went out for some ducks with my friends Duane and Elliot. The weather was way to nice to think we might get something but it turned out to be pretty good. With only one night in Utah it was off for the long drive to South Dakota, we actually only made it to Nebraska and after about 13 hours of driving and not quite recovered from the flight it was nice to get into bed. But it was hard to sleep knowing that we would be hunting tomorrow morning. It was a great week of hunting in South Dakota, we had all kinds of different weather from low 60’s to driving snow. We didn’t have quite as good a year this year since they had a drought this summer and there wasn’t much cover for the pheasants and grouse we were hunting. I also saw quite a few nice big bucks that I would have loved to take, maybe next year. While I was there we even took some time to look at some water front property on Lake Oahe which I have been told many times is quite windy all year round and has some good windsurfing. Who knows maybe a hunting/ windsurfing trip next year, will certainly have to pack some warm wetsuits though!!!

The drive back to Utah took us much longer than planned as we had a very windy and heavy snow storm that came through the afternoon that we left so driving was very slow and slippery. But we made it back to Utah safely and we were met by two feet of new snow in the Salt Lake valley, much different from when we left a week ago. With a few days in Utah before heading back to Maui it was more hunting. I was going to try and hook up with old powerex founder Pete Carney and my buddy Elliot Dalton to do some archery deer hunting but with all the snow we never managed to get it together. I did get some more good duck hunting in with Duane but I was ready to get back to Maui. Back at home I still had a couple of weeks to play around and catch up on work around the house and celebrate my oldest daughter K.C.’s sixth birthday. I also got my new JP wave boards and with my Mutants all set up and ready to go I took advantage of the waves and wind and had some fun days back on the wave gear. We also did some racing pics with Phil of the new TR9’s and I took some time to get some new videos with my onboard gopro. It was nice to be back in the warm and wind on Maui. I did bring back some pheasant and duck and my lovely wife cooked up a beautiful and delicious meal for my birthday as I celebrated low key with the family.

By the end of the month though I was itching to get back into some serious training and prep work for next year. So it was time to get back together with Scott and get back in the gym, get back out on the road for some running and I have even gotten some extra water time with some race SUP training. Again it was another great month, with some good sailing and some good times with the family and friends.

FROM MAUI TO HOOD RIVER TO LA TO BAJA November was a truly special month for me. Following the AWT Hookipa event, we scored great conditions until I had to leave Maui on the 15th. Though we didn’t get another epic swell like in the first two weeks of the trip, there were still plenty days of head-logo high waves up and down the north shore. The winds backed off a bit, which typically back in the gorge would have me frustrated, but for wavesailing I often times enjoy the lighter wind, more surf-style, sessions. With these conditions I was again just blown away with the performance of my 5.1 Mutant. So light and agile, the mutant really makes getting out effortless, even on the bigger days with hardly any wind. Whether just schlogging or finding that one and only tiny gust to get going, I always find myself blown away at how quick I can get out in marginal winds. Turning around and dropping into a wave, the Mutant easily adapts to the added speed of the wave, and it’s compact shape makes that 5.1 move like a 4.2! It’s safe to say that the 5.1 is my absolute favorite light-wind wavesail of all time!

After an awesome month on Maui, it was time to pack up and head back to Hood River to grab my van and start my journey down to La Ventana, Baja for the winter. It’s been a couple years now since I’ve been down there, the place is absolutely majestic, offering warm weather and consistent winds through most of the winter for slalom and freestyle. Bryan Metcalf-Perez and I left Hood River and took off for LA through one of the first big storms of the winter to hit the NW, and as we passed through flooded sections of the freeway we became more and more stoked that we were heading south. After a few day pit-stop in LA, including thanksgiving with the parents and a couple business meetings for EpicSesh, we re-packed the van and headed halfway down Baja to a set of point breaks that have names, but shall remained unmentioned. We saw an incoming NW swell deadset on central baja, and knew a friend of ours from Hood would be in the area. By luck, we navigated in the dark through 20 miles of dirt road along a beach to run into our friends camp, and when the sun came up the next morning, I peered through my tent 10 ft out to the water to watch perfect, double overhead waves come reeling through one of the longest point breaks I’ve ever seen. For the next three days we scored the best surfing of our lives at a few different point breaks up and down the coast, coming off the water each time saying "that was the best wave of my life." On the 2nd to last afternoon of the trip, the NW afternoon trades picked up enough to get Bryan and I out on the water, and we scored the longest waverides of our lives, with rides up to 1:45min long- perfect side-off, down the line, and all to ourselves. We just got out from the desert of paradise and back to civilization, so it’s time to sign off and get ready for the 2nd half of our journey down the peninsula to La Ventana! NOVEMBER FOR INGRID November was a short month for me windsurfing-wise. I had to wrap up my Maui trip and head home and get back to reality. For my last few days on Maui (and my last few days wave sailing for a while), I was really hoping for bigger waves ; it didn’t quite deliver, but nonetheless, after getting back to Hood River, it made me realize how fortunate I was to still be on the water, sailing in my trunks, this late in the season. After the contest (AWT), I was more fired up than ever to progress and work on my wavesailing technique. Thanks to Ferdinando Loffreda (fellow MauiSails riders and hookipa regular)’s pointers, Casey Hauser’s filming, and with the help of my amazing new Mutant sails, I really felt like things were finally clicking. The 3.8 mutant is my all-time favorite sail in the waves. It is so light and agile, and works so well in light wind. I can’t wait to come back in the spring, and hopefully, continue right back where I left off. In the meanwhile, here I am in Hood River. The town and weather has for sure turned to winter mode, but for sure a great time to to cross train, hit the indoor bike park, work a bunch and save up for my next adventure. Aloha Ingrid Larouche

DIDN’T TURN OUT LIKE I EXPECTED It started out great, we had a few mast high days at Ho’okipa, then it happened. On my 3.8 Mutant, the wave roughly logo to mast high, I went for a late hit, I figured I could try to pull a wave 360. Wrong. I hit the lip with all my mite but it hit me three times harder. My sail flew off the back, my board and I fell backwards down the face with only my back foot in the strap. I did two backflips with my board on the way down before the wave threw me around like a rag doll, I heard a pop from my hip and my ankle hurt so bad all I could do was scream. I managed to sail into the, beach where I fell over. I had popped my hip out and sprained my ankle really bad, the doctor said I was really lucky not to have broken my anything. For the better part of the next two weeks I spent my time training, rehabbing in the pool with my coach Ferdinando and friend Morgan. This month I sailed 4 times, but the last session was epic. The Pit was logo high with some of the cleanest sets I have seen. I went out on my 4.2 Mutant while other guys were on 7.3’s. This was my first real session since I hurt my ankle and hip and it did not disappoint. Although I was not 100% I was still able to have a few big airs and some great hits.. I can’t wait for more waves! Aloha Casey Rehrer

EL NINO HAS BEEN PROVIDING US WITH PLENTY OF SURF

Our Experience, Your Reward

Maui Monthly

With the TR-9 in production, we focused this past months effort on finishing off it’s little brother, the Titan-GS. This season, the TitanGS has experienced a full overhaul, based on our experience with the race sail development. Aspect ratios have been reduced and outlines have evolved to the point that the free-race Titan-GS is now even more reminiscent of our full-race sails. The mast sleeve has also been widened and a light weight laminate x-ply has been added to reduce weight and add a more locked in shape. The wider sleeve also facilitates the ease of snapping the cams on during rigging. All these improvements to the Titan-GS line have lead to better overall wind range, while maintaining excellent low end power. On the water, El Nino has been providing us with plenty of surf and generally lighter winds. My Mutant 5.1 and 5.6 sizes have been getting plenty of time on the water, turning the “too light to sail” days into perfect, glassy wave sailing sessions. I’ve had many afternoons of solo wavesailing and sometimes I wish that the wind would stay light and keep the crowds away. Being able to enjoy these conditions is a good testament to gear that works efficiently. It seems that the word is spreading, as we’ve been selling a lot of Mutant and Ghost-XT quivers this season. These sail lines are a great representation of MauiSails philosophy of designing uncompromised, ultimate performance gear. A combination of daily on the water RnD, the best quality materials and intelligent design. The other stuff is just hype. Aloha, Artur Szpunar

BLACK FRIDAY NORTH November 23rd turned out to be a great day on the north shores of Lake Erie. A handful of Canadian sailors decided to don thick neoprene instead of heading out to a big box stores to get the next mega deal on a big screen tv or the latest handheld tablet. The winds that day must have peaked at 40knt or better, with

water and air temps hovering around 45 degree mark with the sun popping its head out every once and a while. Those temperatures are considered warm for the end of November up here in the Great White North. Everyone had a blast that day. Some of us were survival sailing while others where charging hard

H OF THE BORDER with monster airs and killer back loop attempts. The winds just seemed to get stronger and stronger as the day went on with some guys starting the day on 5.3s and ending on 3.7s. By the time afternoon rolled around, everyone was exhausted. We gathered around the back of a truck with huge smiles and enjoyed

some hot chili, a few cold ones, and stories about the epic day we just had. It was the perfect ending to another great season. Kevin Backus Photographer: John Grant

NOVEMBER...

THAT’S THE ONE WITH TURKEY At least around here anyway. But there have been no turkeys lined up with our work lately. The TR-9’s are in bed and gestating nicely, ready to get out there and rip it up for 2013, and Art is well on his way to having some new Loco and Legends in the works. We had a great meeting with out cloth suppliers, the fellows from Connecticut who come here every year and make sure that Dimension Sailcloth is able to give us something new and interesting. In the works is a version of our gradient light weight XPly(tm) that should be even tougher and maybe a bit lighter as well, and a possible improvement to our use of ODL04 Technora that is currently in the Ghost-XT and the Mutant. The production of sample laminates is in the works and we sgould be able to build wave test protos by the end of the year. Work on Cornelia shifted to the deck for the month. Remnant steel screw points were left stuck in the fiberglass deck. They were the leftover from fastening a teak deck overlay that was removed by the previous owner. They were only buried under a glob of epoxy though and had serious rust issues that were eating at the plywood core of the deck. The repair involved grinding the non-skid pattern off, then finding the screw points and digging them out. Repair epoxy was injected into the hole, then filler, and grind smooth so it can be recoated with new paint and non-skid. All just part of the never ending fun of rebuilding an old sail boat.

The besty thing was to get the real Cornelia on board for a Sunday sail, when she drove the boat with full genoa up doping seven konots. And she did it pretty darn good for about half an hour. We are never too old to love sailing, of any kind. And finally.... how about Paul Larsen and the SailRocket doing 65 ktgsw official! An eleven year effort chasing a dream, rewrded with success beyond the dream. Congrats Paul from an old speed addict. Aloha Barry Spanier
