NOVEMBER - DECEMBER 2018

HI FILM FANS, We love Christmas at the cinema! A chance for us to play a few festive favourites alongside some big new releases. We also like to look back over the year and maybe play a few films that people might have missed. There’s a great mix of movies for November and December including cult horror SUSPIRIA from director Luca Guadagnino, the return of Mike Leigh with PETERLOO, Robert Redford’s swansong THE OLD MAN AND THE GUN and Disney films RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET: WRECKIT RALPH 2 and MARY POPPINS RETURNS. For drama audiences we have THE WIFE, DISOBEDIENCE and some great previews in our first collaboration with CINECITY FIlm Festival. The big drama for the new-year is THE FAVOURITE starring Olivia Colman and Rachel Weisz. Thrill seekers can enjoy THE GIRL IN THE SPIDER’S WEB, FIRST MAN and the new adventure from the world of Harry Potter - FANTASTIC BEASTS: THE CRIMES OF GRINDELWALD.

MY PICK

I’m a huge fan of the original MARY POPPINS and it looks like they’ve kept to the spirit of that masterpiece with MARY POPPINS RETURNS. Being a fan of 80’s action I’m also chomping at the bit to see DIE HARD on the big screen!

delivering thought provoking films with amazing performances from homegrown talent. The story from 1919 has eerily prescient echos of modern society bringing this dark chapter of history to life in a relevant way. BUZZ Paul Dano, best known as an actor for his performance

in THERE WILL BE BLOOD, has created an astounding directorial debut. A subtle and emotionally powerful drama. Mulligan gives an astounding performance as a woman trapped by her own expectations of life and Gyllenhaal matches her as the husband who watches his family spiral away from him. Festival reviews have already highlighted the performances here as ones to watch out for during awards season.

DIRECTOR David Lowery | STARRING Robert Redford, Casey Affleck, Sissy Spacek | SPECIFICATION (12A) USA 2018. 93 Mins

SYNOPSIS Based on the true story of Forrest Tucker, from

his audacious escape from San Quentin at the age of 70 to an unprecedented string of heists that confounded authorities and enchanted the public. Wrapped up in the pursuit are detective John Hunt, who becomes captivated with Forrest’s commitment to his craft, and a woman, who loves him in spite of his chosen profession.

BUZZ This is the last screen performance of Robert Redford

after he announced his retirement earlier this year. He dominates this film with an astounding presence, although Casey Affleck and Sissy Spacek more than hold their own against the screen titan. Director David Lowery has proved incredibly versatile after bursting onto the scene with his debut AIN’T THEM BODIES SAINTS and then family fantasy PETE’S DRAGON.

SPOTLIGHT

If this is to be Robert Redford’s swansong then he has left a legacy of amazing performances from The Sundance Kid to Bob Woodward via Out of Africa and Three Days of the Condor. His directorial career is also littered with gems including Quiz Show and The Horse Whisperer. A true hollywood legend bowing out in style.

This year we are very excited to be collaborating with long-running film festival CINECITY. Primarily based in Brighton and dedicated to bringing audiences previews of acclaimed new films and titles from off the beaten track. Make sure to see these previews ahead of their official release!

SPECIFICATION (18) USA/UK 2018. 153 Mins

1977 masterpiece and a horror film like no other! A darkness swirls at the centre of a world-renowned dance company, one that will engulf the artistic director, an ambitious young dancer, and a grieving psychotherapist. Some will succumb to the nightmare. Others will finally wake up.

BUZZ This is an odd choice for the director

of CALL ME BY YOUR NAME as a follow up. Guadagnino has taken the source material and expanded it beyond just a horror film. This is an intense melodramatic thriller with relationships at it’s heart. It completely polarised festival audiences with some lauding it a masterpiece and others denouncing it as silly. Either way it looks as if Guadagnino has created a fascinating conversation piece similar to Aronofsky’s MOTHER!

DIRECTOR Rob Marshall | STARRING Emily Blunt, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Ben Whishaw, Emily Mortimer SPECIFICATION (TBC) USA 2018. TBC Mins

SYNOPSIS In Depression-era London, a now-grown Jane

and Michael Banks, along with Michael’s three children, are visited by the enigmatic Mary Poppins following a personal loss. Through her unique magical skills, and with the aid of her friend Jack, she helps the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives.

BUZZ This sequel looks absolutely delightful with Emily Blunt

really capturing the feel of Julie Andrews in the title role. Disney have been respectful of the original film and source novels with the style and look of the film. Lin-Manuel Miranda has written songs as well as starring. It’s wonderful to see Dick Van Dyke return as well as Disney favourite Angela Lansbury. Fingers crossed this is as fantastic as the trailers have made it look so far.

JAMES

Campaigns and Film Manager As a huge fan of MARY POPPINS, the news of a sequel made me a little scared. But so far Emily Blunt looks brilliant in the lead. The songs from HAMILTON creator LinManuel Miranda also look pretty exciting. There’s a magic about the blending of live action, animation and song that feels absolutely wonderful.
