MARCH APRIL 2019

THE AFTERMATH | FIGHTING WITH MY FAMILY | MAIDEN CAPTAIN MARVEL | BEN IS BACK | DUMBO | RED JOAN AT ETERNITY’S GATE | THE SISTERS BROTHERS | MISSING LINK WILD ROSE | FISHERMAN’S FRIENDS | AVENGERS: ENDGAME

HI FILM FANS, So, I’m writing this the weekend before the Oscars, so still don’t know what film won the big prize… There’s loads of great films crammed into the next two months, I’m frequently surprised about just how many different films we manage to screen in our lovely two screen building. Our line-up for March and April has documentaries, award-winners, cult films, anniversary screenings, Live film events, blockbusters, dramas, family films. If you can’t find something you want to watch in here then get in touch with us on facebook and let us know! We do our best to respond to customer film requests. Disney are dominating this Spring with two comic book movies CAPTAIN MARVEL with Brie Larson as the titular superhero and then AVENGERS: ENDGAME, the culmination of Marvels incredible 22 film run. It promises to be the biggest superhero movie of all-time. Then Tim Burton is back with his live action re-imagining of DUMBO, which looks absolutely delightful. But it’s not just big releases, we have films like RED JOAN with Judi Dench as the longest serving British born KGB spy, AT ETERNITY’S GATE with Willem Defoe as Vincent Van Gogh, WILD ROSE with Jessie Buckley as a wannabe country singer and Julie Walters as her mother. We have some great Q&A’s coming up with Director/ Star Jessica Hynes for her film THE FIGHT and the band FISHERMAN’S FRIENDS dropping in to chat about the film based on their life.

MY PICK

I really enjoyed WILD ROSE but cannot wait to see AVENGERS: ENDGAME to see how the whole thing wraps up. I’m also very keen to see the documentary MINDING THE GAP after ending up on a lot of US critics end of year lists and gaining an Oscar Nomination.

AFTERMATH

DIRECTOR James Kent | STARRING Keira Knightley, Alexander Skarsgård, Jason Clarke | SPECIFICATION (15 tbc) USA/UK 2019. 108 Mins (tbc) SYNOPSIS Set in postwar Germany in 1946, Rachael Morgan arrives in the ruins of Hamburg in the bitter winter, to be reunited with her husband Lewis, a British colonel charged with rebuilding the shattered city. But as they set off for their new home, Rachael is stunned to discover that Lewis has made an unexpected decision: They will be sharing the grand house with its previous owners, a German widower and his troubled daughter. In this charged atmosphere, enmity and grief give way to passion and betrayal. BUZZ Keira Knightley continues to impress with some amazing performances recently and this being no different. From director James Kent, who previously helmed the excellent TESTAMENT OF YOUTH. Based on the best-selling novel by Rhidian Brook. We love a bit of Alexander Skarsgård as well, he was fantastic in TV’s BIG LITTLE LIES.

PAMELA KENT

Marketing Manager This looks like a really exciting period drama in a time that is rarely covered, post war Germany, I am loving the revived presence of Keira Knightley who seems to be everywhere at the minute and brilliant in everything too and always excited to see the wonderful Alexander Skarsgård who is just delicious!

BUZZ This is an absolute crowd-pleaser of the highest

order! Ignore the fact it’s about wrestling - it’s about love, relationships, family and fighting against the system. Director Stephen Merchant (Ricky Gervais’s co-writer/director on THE OFFICE) pulls an absolute smasher out of the bag with this delightful comedy. Also starring Nick Frost and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson as himself alongside an amazing Florence Pugh in the central role. This is a guaranteed laugh and cry along.

BEN MENDELSOHN

BUZZ As usual for Marvel films, little is known in advance as

they keep their secrets close to their chest. This adventure heads back to the 90’s before any of the other Marvel heroes have surfaced, making Carol Danvers the first Marvel superhero. This is also Marvel’s first film with a female hero in the lead, with an Oscar-winning actress no less. Expect the usual mix of pitch-perfect humour, thrilling action and revelatory secrets.
