TOLKIEN | GRETA | THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS 2 | HIGH LIFE EIGHTH GRADE | WOMAN AT WAR | ROCKETMAN BOOKSMART | ALADDIN | SUNSET | GLORIA BELL LATE NIGHT | TOY STORY 4 | BRIGHTBURN | YESTERDAY

HI FILM FANS, The summer season starts here! We kick off May with AVENGERS: ENDGAME on release and some big blockbusters on the horizon. Taron Egerton stars in ROCKETMAN, the story of Elton John and his rise to fame. Keeping with a musical theme we have YESTERDAY, directed by Danny Boyle, about a young songwriter who, after a bizarre blackout, is the only man on earth who remembers The Beatles! There’s epic movies for families as well with Woody, Buzz and the gang back in TOY STORY 4 as well as Disney live action remake of ALADDIN starring Will Smith as the genie. Then there’s THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS 2, a sequel to the 2016 smash hit. It’s not all blockbusters though as we also have the best in world cinema and festivals. EIGHTH GRADE is one of my personal favourite films of the year, and WOMAN AT WAR is a fantastic environmental activist comedy. Isabelle Huppert and Chloe Grace Moretz star in GRETA from director Neil Jordan. From Oscar winning director Laszlo Nemes (Son of Saul) there’s SUNSET about a young woman struggling to earn back her family’s inheritance in war torn Budapest. Amongst that there’s great performances with Nicholas Hoult as JRR Tolkien in TOLKIEN, Emma Thompson as an over the top Late Night TV show host in LATE NIGHT and Julianne Moore as a free spirited divorcee searching for love in GLORIA BELL, from Oscar Winning director Sebastien Lelio (A Fantastic Woman). Don’t miss our classic movie screenings, this season we have BATMAN, SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, KIND HEARTS & CORONETS and DR. STRANGELOVE. Some fab movies!

MY PICK

I absolutely loved EIGHTH GRADE and would recommend it to anyone who will listen to me long enough for me to mention it. I can’t wait for TOY STORY 4 to see what Pixar have up their sleeve. Also, as an 11 yr old boy I saw Tim Burton’s BATMAN in the cinema and will 100% be seeing it again and regressing to the excitement of an 11 yr old!

SYNOPSIS Tolkien explores the formative years of the orphaned author as he finds friendship, love and artistic inspiration among a group of fellow outcasts at school. This takes him into the outbreak of World War I, which threatens to tear the “fellowship” apart. All of these experiences would inspire Tolkien to write his famous Middle-Earth novels.

COLETTE

BUZZ This is the English language debut of acclaimed Finnish

director Dome Karukoski, and it’s always interesting to see international talents take on English topics. Most will know JRR Tolkien as the author of Lord of the Rings, so this will be a fascinating peek into the life of the man who created the classic that still enthrals readers and audiences to this day. It’s great to see Nicholas Hoult step up to a lead role and also Lily Collins return to film after a short absence. The visuals look fab, incorporating elements of middle earth into Oxford and Tolkien’s experience in the trenches.

SYNOPSIS Set in a place beyond the solar system in a future that seems like the present. A group of criminals accept a mission in space to become the subjects of a human reproduction experiment. They find themselves in the most unimaginable situation after a storm of cosmic rays hit the ship and must rely on each other as they hurtle toward the oblivion of a black hole. BUZZ Acclaimed French film-maker Claire Denis makes her

English language debut with this eerie sci-fi thriller. Robert Pattinson has been instrumental in getting this adult film as high a profile as possible. It explores issues of sexuality and sensuality, with Denis saying that the sci-fi element of the story heightens the isolation in space. The film won rave reviews from critics at festivals but also proved hugely divisive. A true cinematic original that demands to be seen on the big screen for the full experience.

SUPERBAD

BUZZ This is the debut film from actress Olivia Wilde, who said

that she took inspiration from films such as THE BREAKFAST CLUB and CLUELESS for this high school coming of age comedy. Flipping the usual male driven stories on their head, our two central characters here are female best friends trying to cram in as much experience as they can into a short period. Wilde uses her great comedy contacts to bring in a huge cast of cameos and supporting roles including Lisa Kudrow, Will Forte, Jason Sudeikis and Carrie Fisher’s daughter Billie Lourd. After being accused of hating women she hires Molly as the one woman in Katherine’s all-male writers’ room. But Molly might be too little too late, as the formidable Katherine also faces the reality of low ratings and a network that wants to replace her. Molly is determined to help Katherine by revitalizing her show and career - and possible effect even bigger change at the same time. BUZZ Emma Thompson is a national treasure turning almost

everything she touches to gold. This role sees her playing against type as an unpleasant late night host. This has a feel of THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA about it with Thompson relishing the scenery chewing performance. But the film wouldn’t be anything without heart and Mindy Kaling brings that in excess.

SPOTLIGHT Mindy Kaling shot to prominence in the U.S. The Office, and went on to have her own acclaimed show The Mindy Project. With Brightburn, the visionary filmmaker of GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY and SLITHER presents a startling, subversive take on a radical new genre: superhero horror.

SLITHER

BUZZ GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY director James Gunn,

executive produced this horror tale and you can see his post modern comic book style all over it. A simple yet effective premise makes for an easy pitch - What if Superman wasn’t a nice guy? After a freak bus accident during a mysterious global blackout, Jack wakes up to discover that The Beatles have never existed. Performing songs by the greatest band in history to a world that has never heard them - Jack becomes an overnight sensation with a little help from his agent. BUZZ You can’t go wrong with this one.
