Global milk production is falling

Normal market mechanisms are currently invalidated in the global dairy industry. While market prices for dairy products have risen at record rates over the past two months, dairy farmers around the world have scaled down production. - So far, farmers have always increased milk production shortly after market prices have been boosted. However, this time the exact opposite has happened – prices have gone up, and production has gone down, and I don’t remember that this has happened before, says Niels Ole Nielsen, Chief Consultant at the Danish Agriculture & Food Council on mejeri.dk.

Danone transforms dairy to be entirely dedicated to plant production

By 2023, Danone’s dairy at Villecomtal-sur-Arros will produce only plantbased products. In this way, Danone is further investing in the new food segment, which has tripled in France over the past seven years and is expected to grow by a further 50 percent by 2025. The information is provided by the FødevareWatch (food media) referring to the Dairy Reporter (dairy processing industry media). Francois Eyraud, Managing Director of Danone Fresh Products France, estimates that the transformation into plant-based production will reduce the dairy’s CO2 emissions by 70 percent.

Starbucks and Arla UK in carbon emission trials

Arla is partnering with coffee chain Starbucks in the UK to trial a new sustainable sourcing blueprint on 14 Arla farms. The project is expected to take 3 years. The future blueprint will eventually be used for all Starbucks’ dairy suppliers in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. The trials will be financially supported by Starbucks as part of Arla’s UK 360 scheme. Starbucks says 22% of their global emissions come from dairy.
