Two of SPX FLOW’s most critical pilot plants are Innovation Centers located in Soeborg and Silkeborg. These state-of-the-art, collaborative spaces, help customers – particularly food and beverage companies – reach a range of goals. Some want to quickly introduce new products. Others want to cut energy costs, increase production volume or meet new environmental regulations. And with the rapidly evolving demands from today’s consumers, some customers must make their operations more flexible.

The Danish facilities are part of SPX FLOW’s worldwide network of more than 25 Innovation and Design Centers. Each offers support from food technologists, product specialists, process and production engineers, electricians and fitters. They perform full-product testing and analyses in laboratories, temperature-controlled storage rooms, mobile tanks and service facilities for water, ice water, glycol, power and steam.

The Innovation Centers help customers develop technologies, creating and testing recipes and then perfecting critical manufacturing processes. SPX FLOW’s work helps customers quickly and profitably find the breakthroughs they want while protecting the individuality and quality of their brands.

New product examples

In Soeborg, for instance, SPX FLOW recently helped a major manufacturer who needed to optimize the color profile of vegan food that substituted for meat. SPX FLOW has also used the facility to help customers craft recipes that save energy, reduce the numbers of ingredients in their products and switch to refrigerants that are more environmentally friendly. The work with refrigerants required a safe laboratory to perform tests.

In Silkeborg, SPX FLOW has vast experience in Ultra High Temperature (UHT) technology and can tailor production solutions to match customers’ specific goals. The company works with customers R&D and product management departments to develop solutions and generate new business goals.

For customers conducting pilot tests, SPX FLOW just introduced two new innovations.

APV® Pilot 4T Homogenizer

One is the APV® Pilot 4T Homogenizer, which helps customers test recipes with a new level of versatility in a compact unit. The pilotscale homogenization validates processes before companies invest in full lines, helping customers scale up from their initial laboratory tests to production.

International Flavors & Fragrances (IFF) recently began testing the compact homogenizer to develop recipes for food and beverages, including dairy products and plantbased food, such as peas and oats. The company reported the 4T’s control system with variable speed drive made it easy to control the flow rate accurately.

APV Flex-Mix™ Pilot Mixer

The latest edition is the APV Flex-Mix™ Pilot Mixer. Customers can use just one unit to develop a wide range of products and recipes, testing mixing processes from low to high viscosity. Customers can use the Flex-Mix at their own facilities, replicating real-life conditions without shutting production lines.

In the Innovation Centers, SPX FLOW also uses several other processes, from wet to dry powder, and from heat treatment to homogenization. All those processes can be interconnected with raw materials handled by batch or continuous operation.

Food and beverage producers in Denmark and around the world face a growing number of challenges and must remain competitive in a fast-moving market. Customers can conduct trials remotely or on-site at one of SPX FLOW’s many Innovation Centers or in their own time with a wide range of pilot plants that customers can buy or rent for tests in their own facilities. This flexibility helps customers find their desired solution as quickly as possible – reducing both time to market for new products and risk when moving to full scale production.
