CELEBRATING 50TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY OF ELLIS AND CLAUDETTE POWERS

BY RICHARD LOVE LONG BEACH, CA - Saturday, April 30th was a joyous and blessed day for Ellis and Claudette Powers, and many, many, relatives and friends, celebrating the 50th Wedding Anniversary of Ellis and Claudette Powers. The joyous affair took place outdoors under a lovely white tent at the ?Carson Park?in Long Beach. How they met, according to Claudette was they both was on a bus traveling west on Santa Barbara Blvd. When the bus turned left on Broadway both of them got off the bus walking south on Broadway. Claudette didn’t know where the bus stop was for her transfer. Claudette says she got off from the back of the bus and Ellis got off the bus from the front, both walking in the same direction, placing Claudette in front of Ellis, but Ellis walked fast to catch up with me and said something like, “What’s happening” and Claudette said “I don’t know where the bus stop is?” Ellis said, “Don’t worry, pretty, I’ll show you where to catch your next bus”. According to Claudette, Ellis waled her to a bus stop which turned out to be the wrong one. We eventually got to the right bus stop for me and as I got on the bus Ellis shouted out to me, “Too bad you didn’t have time to give me your phone number!” As the bus doors were closing, Claudette shouted back to Ellis, “Oh, I’ll take time. Webster 52530.” According to Claudette, I laughed because I was not interested in ever hearing from him again. He did not have big hair. All of the other boys were wearing full afrofrows. His hair was very short. According to Ellis, his story is the same until we got to the bus. I was kind enough to show Claudette, who was a real country girl, to the bus top; the right bus stop. She got on the bus, ran to the back of the bus, flung the window open and with half of her body hanging out of the bus window, Claudette yelled, “!Please call me, my number is Webster 52530!” Ellis dated Claudette for three years, they got married and have lived “Happily Every After.” Program leader for their 50th wedding anniversary celebration was Sandra Moss with welcome by Jimmy and Francis Lee with the occasion given by Patricia Brent. Prayer and blessing of the delicious foods by Pastor Bonnie Radden. Later, Claudette sung the song, “Through the Years” and a special song presentation “You are So beautiful” from Ellis to Claudette. Great comedy presentations by Susie Green and Carlota Adams that was enjoyed by more than the 300 relatives and friends present. A special presentation was made by Vondi Villalba with closing remarks from Family and friends. Great music was offered by ‘Music Most Wanted Band’. Ellis and Claudette Powers offers their special thanks to Carlota Adams, Rachel Axel, Tambra Axel, Ebony Bozart, Lakeisha Bozart, Patricia Brent, Thurza Davis, Susie Green, Lori Grace, Corey Hill, Morishia Hollyfield, Jimmy & Francis Lee, Vincent Lamont Morris, Courtney Patterson, Bonnie Radden, Cynthia Stuart, Vondi Villalbi, and Carolyn Smith-Watts. Vendors included Circle C Printing, Coast Party Rentals, Osiel’s Party Supply and Union Ice. Closing the Ellis, Claudette and Family said: Thanks for “through the Years” Many of you have been with us Through the Years. You’ve smoothed our sorrow and dried our tears. Encouraged us to continue to stay the course. And we’ve lived to celebrate this day. “Thank you” is just a simple start as we appreciate all of you with all our hears. For the blessing we are enjoying today, your presence is the most. All we ask is that you continue to pray for us. Black Pride, Black Survival

Beloved Conductors, Many of you don't have don't have time to do research. I do. In addition to that I have thousands of eyes on the Modern Day Internet Underground Railroad as Conductors who are the eyes and ears for us and they send us valuable information to liberate and empower ourselves. If you do not know who Harriet Tubman is, I urge you to look her up on the web. Harriet, our Black Moses, is our heroine who set the example for us to follow today. Harriett said, "I freed a thousand slaves and could have freed thousands more, if ONLY they had known that there were slaves!" Today, we are still slaves whether we want to acknowledge it or not! When we have a Donald Trump who is a hate filled racist demanding that OUR PRESIDENT must present his birth certificate in order to prove his right to be president, when he refers to us as "The Blacks," and then when the birth certificate is presented, he then asks for the transcript to prove that OUR PRESIDENT, as a Black man had the smarts to get into Columbia and Harvard, then you know that we are still slaves not to be respected by white folks. Donald is a phony. He never doubted OUR PRESIDENT'S citizenship. This was just an attempt to alert, alarm and arm the grumbling racists to the fact that a Black man was in "their White House" and don't let him continue to maintain occupancy for a second term." It was just like Paul Revere sounding the alarm "from every middlesex, village and farm." "Don't vote for that Black man and let him continue to dwell in OUR WHITE HOUSE WITH HIS WIFE AND CHILDREN BECAUSE AS BLACKS THEY DON'T DESERVE TO TRAVEL ALL OVER THE WORLD IN AIR FORCE 1 AND AIR FORCE 2 AT OUR EXPENSE WHEN THIS IS A RIGHT RESERVED EXCLUSIVELY FOR FOLKS THAT LOOK LIKE US. WE ARE GOING TO TAKE OUR COUNTRY BACK. Back from whom, from the Indians whom they slaughtered, filled with venereal diseases and whisky in order to steal this land? This is not their land, This land was not discovered by Columbus. This land was occupied by the Native Americans and there is anthropological evidence that shows that we were here, too. Also note the imperialist views espoused by Trump. Many of you may be to young; but, there was a time when the British who were among the original thieves of this land, bragged to say, "the sun never sets on the British Empire." Why? Because they had colonized many of the darker countries in the world! ...' We should just go into a country and TAKE THE OIL' according to Trump! In other words, white men don't have to respect the sovereignty of nations when they are occupied by people of color, just go in kill off their leaders, subjugate the people and take all the natural resources and claim them as their own! I can't remember the name of the legislator that said about Ghadfi, "Just cut off the head of the snake." Unfortunately, I don't always have a pencil and paper handy to jot down the names of these savage war hawks who feel they have the right to run over, take over and colonize all nations of color. Ask yourself, why do we always take up for Israel over Palestine? Which of the two groups has more color in their skin? I am setting stage for something. I am letting you know how important the flyer above is for you. We, as a people, need to start uniting and looking out for ourselves. If you don't realize that if a man as brilliant as OUR PRESIDENT doesn't get the respect and fair treatment from the majority of white racist in this country, what hope is there for you? Yes, I know that some of you, with or without affirmative action, have acquired college degrees, you've move into the middle class, you've bought expensive homes even in exclusive formerly all white neighborhoods, you've bought expensive foreign cars, you've been able to send your children to college; but, most of you did this working for white folks. Once they ship your jobs overseas, once they ask you to take a pay cut, once they delay sending you your federal funds for services performed, once they eliminate the large numbers of people who employ your services because they have lost their jobs, then the income from your medical practice, your law practice, your grocery store and your rental income, you will eventually find yourself in the same sinking ship along with them. you following along the logic with me? Can you understand what is happening or can happen to you in this picture? Are you really and truly in control of your destiny? Do you know about Black Wall Street? Do you know about Rosewood? Do you know about other uprisings where Blacks prospered and jealous whites burned their businesses down and killed hundreds of innocent, successful Blacks out of envy and jealousy? Do you know why you don't know these facts? [Editor’s Note: You have been programmed NOT to read Black Newspapers.] Do you know why this is not taught in American classrooms when we study American history? Think about it? If you are kept in the dark and only read and learn what white people want you to read and learn, then you have incomplete knowledge and you don't know about the successes of your people, conversely, do you know about the savagery and brutality of this white man who grins in your face while sticking a knife in your back? How has he accomplished this? He accomplished this because he controls information: the text books, the radio and TV stations. [Editor’s Note: Black newspapers are controlled by BlacksHe gives you a FOX news outlet that feeds white racists 24/7 with hatred and contempt toward Black people. They give people like Donald Trump, Sarah Palin and a few token n e g r o e s, like Armstrong Wiliams, Alan Keyes, Thomas Sowell, Walter Williams, Ron Christie, Starr Parker, Frances Rice, J. C. Watts, Alan West and a few other of their flunkies a platform to further divide people of African descent. These n e g r o e s are the poster children who are used as the apologist for white racists and try to sell other people of African descent on the notion that racists love you and are fair to you but you vote Democratic because you don't know any better. I don't want to paint all Black Republicans with a broad brush because there have been some civil rights activists who are members of the Republican party. Indeed, all white Democrats are not pure; and, many of them are ready to demean OUR PRESIDENT and all other Blacks as well. It was the noble laureate, Linus Pauling who stated that Blacks had inferior intellect to whites. The main reason for this discourse is to wake you up. To apprise you of the factors dividing us in this country. The reason is distrust and or mistrust. we don't trust each other because we have been programmed that way. We were encouraged to spy on each other during slavery. We were often the ones to mete out the punishment by lashing Black slaves who did not please the master. Those house negroes were asked what the field negroes where thinking and talking about. All of this was to dominate and to control. Are we satisfied with that? Are we ready to unite and trust each other? We may be disappointed from time to time. That's life. Look how many white people trusted Bernie Madoff and how that turned out. We have been betrayed by both whites and Blacks, so what's the difference. We have been supported by both Blacks and whites. There was a time when we first started the northern migration when we had to depend upon each other. We were more trusting of each other. Can we get back to that? When we trusted each other more, we were a freerer people. We were able to open and support or own businesses. We were able to hire our own people when they could not get jobs in the larger community. This is a new day, but the old formula is working. We've got to throw out that old formula and start trusting each other again and that is why I'm sending you this flyer. This is a venture that can start us on the road to emancipation and freedom. Please look into this venture and support it. This is in Chicago; but, there is no reason why nationwide we should not support or form our own credit unions to make funds available to finance our own mortgages when white banks turn us down, when we need start up funds or operating funds to keep our businesses operating, our own credit unions are the answer! I do not feel I'm wasting my time because I feel that you are thinking people with open minds who are willing to listen to reason and to think for yourselves and are not brainwashed into believing that you are valueless and no one who looks like you can have any value. Am I right? Helen

Officer-involved shootings reflect the hazards of police work By LAPPL Board of Directors The 2011 year-to-date number of LAPD officer-involved shootings is higher than comparable periods for the last five years. This increase serves as a stark reminder of the inherent dangers of the profession. The LAPD figures are part of a disturbing and tragic nationwide trend. Over the past year, numerous officers have been killed across the country. As we have been warning for months, after a two-year decline in law enforcement fatalities, 2010 was one of the deadliest on record for police officers nationwide. A total of 162 officers died in the line of duty last year, up from 117 in 2009. So far in 2011, 63 officers nationwide have lost their lives. The recent LAPD shootings all involved armed suspects. Officer Steven Jenkins, who was shot in the face and chest, and nearly murdered by a domestic violence suspect earlier this month, was our most recent and closest reminder that these men and women really do put their lives on the line every day. We cannot, however, fail to note that there are always self-appointed “community leaders” ready with a quote and criticism whenever police officers use deadly force to protect the lives of others and their own. The latest example of this criticize-early, facts-be-dammed “activism” comes after the shooting of Brenda Williams, who was pointing a gun at a neighbor and refused to drop it when ordered to by three officers. Anyone should recognize that threatening another person with a gun, not to mention refusing to drop it when commanded to by uniformed police officers, forces them to use deadly force to stop the threat. But apparently, one “community leader” managed to bluster his criticism of the shooting all the way into the paper, questioning the “use, level, and type of deadly force” against Ms. Williams because it happened when “she was in her home.” Yep, we aren’t kidding, that truly was the assessment of a so-called “community leader.” Does this mean there should be different rules for people who threaten to kill others in their own home? Some things will never change. Police work will remain dangerous and there will always be a few noisemakers and opportunists who criticize police no matter how justified a shooting may have been. But we trust that the vast majority of Los Angeles residents will appreciate both the dangerousness of police work and the professionalism with which the LAPD carries it out.

Statement from the Office of the Governor SACRAMENTO - Governor Edmund G. Brown, Jr. has undergone an outpatient medi-

cal procedure to remove a growth from the right side of his nose after tests revealed the presence of basal cell carcinoma. The procedure was conducted yesterday with local anesthetic and Governor Brown returned home afterward. All of the basal carcinoma cells were removed, but some reconstructive surgery to the nose was required as a result of the procedure. Governor Brown is at home and has continued to conduct state business today. He will not attend the State Democratic Convention in Sacramento, CA this weekend. In addition, he does not plan to attend public events until the stitches are removed.

Schipske donating her salary increase and Calling for travel Cut Stop me if you heard this one before: These are such hard times financially that our elected officials should lead by example.

FROM STAFF REPORTS LONG BEACH, CA - That's why I am donating my upcoming salary increase as a City Councilwoman to a non profit organization -- The Long Beach Rosie the Riveter Foundation. The Foundation was established to develop and maintain improvements in the Long Beach Rosie the Riveter Park and Interpretive Center. The salary increases amount to 1.3% of the council salary (which translates to @ $300). Other elected officials are receiving a much higher increase because frankly they make quite a bit more than City Council. The increases are mandated by the City Charter Section 203 which was voted into law by the residents of Long Beach. I am also introducing a council agenda item calling for the elimination of non-essential travel, conferences and professional development courses by the Mayor and City Council and City Manager departments. This would follow the lead of Gov. Brown who just ordered the elimination on the state level for the Executive Branch. Yes, we need to do more to reduce the deficit -- including pension reform, which by law needs to be negotiated. But it is important that elected officials cut where we can and set the example. FROM LBT REPORTS A St. Petersburg attorney says Facebook and social media are used in 90 percent of her divorce cases. "You get a little bit of everything that happens on Facebook," said Carin Constantine. "Everything from clients coming in with pictures of the opposing party doing a keg stand with high schoolers... to teenagers drinking alcohol served by a parent... to a picture of a husband at a nightclub dancing with a babysitter." A recent survey by the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers found that Facebook is cited in one in five divorces in the United States. Also, more than 80 percent of divorce lawyers reported a rising number of people are using social media to engage in affairs. "There are times when my paralegal and I sit in this office and laugh because people are stupid. They put things out there on the internet that can last forever," Constantine said. Divorce attorneys are becoming internet gurus. Because websites like Yahoo and Google cache images as soon as they're put online, Constantine says she can find pictures from Facebook accounts that have been deactivated. Boycott The Celebrity Apprentice and all Donald Trump Ventures To All, Our streams appears to mostly ‘spit out’ what we dislike about individuals and organizations that are or want to dis-credit blacks as individuals or organizations and these ‘haters’ are mostly wealthy. It appears that most of the writers who respond in our group may have been ‘mis-educated’ as to not focusing on encouraging black unity for the group’s own economic and political development. Specifically, where in the group are we supporting the establishment of and continued success of black businesses? How much energy are we spending on suggesting mentoring youth in areas for the betterment of ourselves and future black generations? Don’t fall for the easy of responding to this and making another excuse for not ‘working to attend’ our upcoming HHEW conference in June! Richard Love I agree Mr. Love. Was it the late Fredrick Douglas who said that "power concede nothing without demand". If we ignore vain voices like Mr. Trump they will turn to dust and go quietly away ....just as long we make sure that our political demands through participation ---economics demands through personal spending and social demands through collective and cohesive organizations are strong and effective. If HHEW were to only inspire one thing it has to be that one voice can make a difference in our community becuse it promote the courage to speak up and speak out about our communities need and the power in unity. Percy Okay, full disclosure -- I don’t care for Donald Trump either, however, as a journalist, I do know the power of the press. Many powerful people like Donald Trump believe the following about the media: “I really don’t care what bad things they say about me, just as long as they spell my name correctly.” The Donald Trumps of the world love publicity. Now with that said, two “Donald Trump” things; 1) I just got off the phone with a political scientist who surprised me by saying that he actually believes that Donald Trump is going to be the Republican candidate because the media will not destroy Trump, and even hide a lot of his dirt -- why? Because although he is the GOP candidate, insiders know that Obama is still going to win. Trump will walk away from this bigger than ever and now a part of U.S. history. And still plenty of time to make even more money. Hmmmmm? Thoughts about that? 2) My second Donald Trump thought (and this time I am including Oprah :). A few months ago I watched Oprah (yes I did :), and she had Donald Trump and his entire family on. She praised him and he got a lot of mileage out of this just before he announced. Hmmmmm? So I am asking a) why would Oprah feature such a “bad” person who is also leading the “birther” Obama madness when she claims to love Obama? b) Is it possible that Oprah also misread Obama, I mean, Trump’s character :) and c) why are the Trump haters not also criticizing Oprah for opening the flood gates? Orlando in Stockton, CA I’m a Trump hater right now. I’m drinking gallons of hateraid with his name on it. He’s a joke. Damali You are likely right regarding the ‘firing up the black base’ comment. Unfortunately, it is sad that we have to have someone fire us up in the 1st place. Milt I Concur! However, I’d like to say that Donald Trump’s ignorant displays are doing a great job firing up the black base. Maybe we’ll be able to thank him later. Rhoda I don’t like Trump to begin with so watching his “self gratifying” show was never an option for me. I am actually glad he is letting his true self be known by the masses. Milt To All, This email is going around. I think this is a great idea to send it to everyone we know to send a message to Trump and the rest of the Tea baggers. Bruce Bill Cosby slammed Trump on the Today Show regarding his ridiculous actions and remarks about our President. Lawrence O’Donnell the host of the Last Word a program on MSNBC noted tonight the ratings for The Celebrity Apprentice have been dropping since Cosby slammed Trump and also because of the statements he made regarding Obama. Also, NBC the station that televise the Celebrity Apprentice will decide whether or not to pick the show up for another season. The date NBC decides to pick up the show for another season is May 16th. Let’s band together and show Trump he’s not as great as he think he is. I am pleading with each of you to forward this email to all in your address book and ask them to forward it to everyone they know. We should also boycott his casinos, hotels, etc., anything with Trumps name on it. This man does not respect our President so let’s show him just how important he’s not. Trump needs to pay for his outrageous antics. Please pass this along to everyone you know. Thanks! Richard Love

Happy Mother’s Day to All Mothers! R. Love, Publisher

City of Long Beach The City of Long Beach is pleased to announce the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the Rosa Parks Park, 10:00 am, Saturday, May 21st, at Alamitos and 15th Street. Please, mark your calendars for this iconic ceremony.

Mother's Day: May 8, 2011 The driving force behind Mother's Day was Anna Jarvis, who organized observances in Grafton, W.Va., and Philadelphia on May 10, 1908. As the annual celebration became popular around the country, Jarvis asked members of Congress to set aside a day to honor mothers. She finally succeeded in 1914, when Congress designated the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day.

Census Bureau Reports the Number of Black-Owned Businesses Increased at Triple the National Rate FROM GOVERNMENT REPORTS From 2002 to 2007, the number of black-owned businesses increased by 60.5 percent to 1.9 million, more than triple the national rate of 18.0 percent, according to the U.S. Census Bureau's Survey of Business Owners. Over the same period, receipts generated by blackowned businesses increased 55.1 percent to $137.5 billion. “Black-owned businesses continued to be one of the fastest growing segments of our economy, showing rapid growth in both the number of businesses and total sales during this time period,” said Census Bureau Deputy Director Thomas Mesenbourg. These new data come from the Survey of Business Owners: Black-Owned Businesses: 2007. The survey provides detailed information every five years for black-owned businesses, including the number of firms, sales and receipts, number of paid employees and annual payroll. Data are presented by geographic area (nation, state, county, city and metro area), industry and size of business. Preliminary national and state data were released in July 2010. In 2007, nearly four in 10 black-owned businesses operated in the health care and social assistance; and repair, maintenance, personal and laundry services sectors. The retail trade and health care and social assistance sectors accounted for 27.4 percent of black-owned business revenue. Additional reports from the survey highlighting other minority- and veteranowned businesses will be issued over the next year. Subsequently, separate publications will be issued highlighting additional characteristics of all businesses and their owners.

Will Radio Honor Singer David Ruffin On June 1st? By Larry Buford We are now into the month of May 2011. In Pop culture, the phrase “…the month of May”, has to be on par with Shakespeare’s line in his Julius Caesar play “…the ides of March.” Smokey Robinson’s legendary songwriting canonized the former in what has to be one of the most recognized Pop songs of all time, “My Girl.” Somewhere on your musical journey; in America or around the world; inevitably you are going to hear that evergreen song by one of Motown’s finest groups, The Temptations, featuring the late great David Ruffin. Sadly, Ruffin died in 1991. Will today’s radio/media remember and acknowledge that June 1st of this year will mark the 20th anniversary of his death? If you were tuned in; especially living in Detroit during the sixties; you would know the impact Ruffin’s voice made on our culture. In addition to “My Girl”, Ruffin was featured on many other songs including “It’s Growing” “Since I Lost My Baby,” “I Wish It Would Rain,” and “(I Know) I’m Losing You.” In his book “Too Be Loved”, Motown founder Berry Gordy said “David Ruffin oozed with artistry and talent.” Gordy also stated after songwriter/producer Norman Whitfield brought him the final version of the hit record “Ain’t Too Proud To Beg”, “David’s voice came jumping off that record begging like I’d never heard before…” As an acknowledgement of Ruffin’s talent, in the re-release of the book “Brother Ray: Ray Charles’ Own Story”, Charles mentioned Ruffin first in a list of favorite singers, stating, “I liked many of the so-called soul singers – David Ruffin with the Temptations…” Records show that when Brook Benton’s song, “Rainy Night In Georgia” was released in the Winter of 1969; Ruffin recorded an outstanding version of it a few months later in 1970; but it was vaulted. It was not released until almost 40 years later. Fans will be happy to know that a lot of the previously unreleased songs that Ruffin recorded are now available and may be found on the internet. His older brother Jimmy Ruffin (“What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted”) says he and the Ruffin family hope that David will get the proper recognition he deserves. He says it was “my insistence that got David with The Temptations…there’s not a day that goes by that I don’t think about him”. Radio stations are being asked to mark their calendars and declare a “David Ruffin Day” segment in their programming to honor and celebrate the June 1st anniversary. As an aside, when Sam Cooke died in December 1964, David Ruffin’s voice came on the national and international scene a month later in January 1965 with “My Girl.” The timbre in his voice (similar to Cooke’s) seemed to say that he picked up the baton where Cooke left off in Pop music. It was perfect timing to help get through what we refer to as those “turbulent sixties”. Larry Buford is a Los Angeles-based freelance writer. GOODWILL INDUSTRIES SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP ROLE GROWS

THERE ARE FEWER PEOPLE IN JAIL Nonprofit Celebrates 60th Annual Goodwill BY: BOB MORRISON Local jail inmate population in the U.S. declines for the second year, in a row. That, according to the U.S. Justice Department’s Bureau of Justice Statistics, announcing that the jail population went down 2.4 percent in the 12 months ending June 30, 2010: Kara McCarthy, with the U.S. Justice Department, also saying the jail incarceration rate in 2010 dropped to 242 jail inmates per 100,000 U.S. residents―the lowest rate since 2003. A DOJ statement notes that “local jails, unlike prisons, are confinement facilities mainly operated by a local law enforcement agency. Jails typically hold inmates while they await court action or serve a sentence of one year or less.” The announcement goes on to say the decline in jail inmates was mostly concentrated in large jail jurisdictions, or those holding 1,000 or more inmates. Among the 170 jail jurisdictions with 1,000 or more inmates on an average day, two-thirds reported a decline. Six jail jurisdictions reported a drop of more than 1,000 inmates, accounting for 46 percent of the decline nationwide.

STUNNING, KILLER STORMS & A BAD NEWS AFTERMATH, for some FROM LBT REPORTS The nation is stunned by the stormy weather horror stories coming from Alabama. An unusually devastating swarm of storms. Not unusual, unfortunately: After every storm, fly-by-night repair companies do their version of the swarm: Randy Johnston is a lawyer who makes his living going after con artists. The Better Business Bureau offers several tips to avoid being scammed. You can, of course, check out the company’s rating and complaint history at www.bbb.org. Angie's List has been a sort of modern techno-update of the BBB concept. Make sure to hire a company that is properly licensed to make repairs. Ask for references. Do NOT hire someone going doorto-door or claiming to do work for your neighbors. Get a contract in writing before they start work. And you're advised to work with a local company with a proven track record and a good reputation.

Industries Week FROM LBT’S REPORTS

LONG BEACH, CA — Established in 1902, Goodwill Industries® has taken its social entrepreneurship role to new heights through expanded partnerships, the use of new media and a renewed commitment to stronger families and communities. From May 1–7, Goodwill® agencies across the United States and Canada are celebrating the 60th annual Goodwill Industries Week, reflecting on how the nonprofit has grown with the times yet kept true to its founding values. A recent and dramatic example of Goodwill’s growth was represented through the launch of the Donate Movement, which united people around a common cause of protecting the environment through socially conscious donations. Goodwill’s groundbreaking Donation Impact Calculator (donate.goodwill.org) demonstrates the value of donations to the planet and to the people Goodwill serves through critical job training and career services. The movement has also garnered highly visible partners like television network Planet Green and retailers Hanes and Levi’s — organizations that share Goodwill’s vision. “Edgar Helms couldn’t have foreseen how his vision of social entrepreneurship would unite so many diverse entities around a single goal,” said Janet McCarthy-Wilson, President & CEO, Goodwill, Serving the People of Southern Los Angeles County. “Shoppers and donors, as well as our new cause-marketing partners, now see the real value in our work and how each person plays a role in creating a cleaner planet and stronger communities.” There are 165 independent Goodwill agencies in the United States and Canada that tailor job training programs and career services to meet the specific needs of employers in their communities. In Southern Los Angeles County, Goodwill provides a wide range of training programs such as our Health Care Training Program, Loss Prevention, Medical Terminology & Medical Billing, and employment preparation and job placement services. Our Sign Language & Interpreting Services, LiNKS, launched its Video Remote Interpreting service providing even more communication access for members of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community. Goodwill also keeps toxic materials out of our landfills through our e-waste recycling program, Shred-4-Good, secure document shredding business, and our Waste Reduction Task Force, which oversees our recycling program including plastic bottles, glass, cardboard and textiles. “This Goodwill Industries Week, we thank you for the part you’ve played in our history and the part you will play in shaping our future,” said McCarthy-Wilson. “Your continued support keeps alive a century-old vision that work transforms lives.”

Courage to Never Feel Sorry For Yourself Again The key to dismissing the parts of us that love pity parties is to blow out the match that lights the candles of bitterness before they become inflamed. Here are ten truths about self-pity to help strengthen your wish to be free of all dark, self-compromising states. It Makes Things Worse The only thing feeling sorry for yourself changes about your life is that it makes it worse. It Fosters Persistent Resistance to Healing No matter how you look at it, you involve yourself with whatever you resist. It Repels New Opportunities Being wrapped up in self-pity completely spoils any chance of being able to see new possibilities as they appear; besides, no one likes sour milk! It Nurtures Bitterness The only thing that grows from cultivating any dark seed of sorrow is more bitter fruit. It Enables the Negative in Everyone Feeling sorry for those who want you to feel sorry for them is like giving an alcoholic a gift certificate to a liquor store. It Steals Your Possibilities Your thoughts can no more tell you what is true about your possibilities than can a set of stream-side boulders know the nature of the waters that rush by them. It is a Poison in the System Feeling sorry for yourself is a slow acting poison; it first corrupts, and then consumes the heart...choking it with dark and useless emotions.

Moving Past Self-Pity

It is important to realize there lives nothing real in our past – regardless of how disappointing or painful it may have been – that can grab us and make us its captive anymore than dark shadows have the power to keep us from walking into the sunlight. Now, add to this fact the realization that there is never a good reason to go along with feeling bad about yourself, and you’re on your way to living in a world without self-pity. Compiled by Richard Love

3+ Minutes with the Bible PAUL, THE PATTERN by Richard Love

Many religious people take the Lord Jesus Christ as their pattern in life. They call Him "The Great Example". When problems arise, they ask themselves: "What would Jesus do?" They seek salvation by "walking in His steps". While our Lord's moral and spiritual virtues are indeed worthy of emulation, there were many details in His conduct which we should not imitate. For example, none of us would be in a position to pronounce upon the religious hypocrites of our day the bitter woes which our Lord pronounced upon the Pharisees of His day -- simply because we all have so much of the Pharisee in us. Certainly we cannot be saved by "following Christ," or striving to live as He did. His perfect holiness would only emphasize our unrighteousness and condemn us. He came to save us, not by His life, but by His death. "CHRIST DIED FOR OUR SINS" (ICor.15:3), and sinners are "reconciled to God by the death of His Son" (Rom.5:10). But God has given us a pattern for salvation. It is none other than the Apostle Paul, the chief of sinners saved by grace. Hear what he says by divine inspiration: "This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, THAT CHRIST JESUS CAME INTO THE WORLD TO SAVE SINNERS, of whom I am chief" (ITim.1:15). Paul, as Saul of Tarsus, remember, had led his nation and the world in rebellion against God and His Christ. He was "exceedingly mad" against the disciples of Christ and "breathed threatening and slaughter" against them. Why then, did God save him? He goes on to tell us in the next verse: "Howbeit [but] for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might show forth all longsuffering, FOR A PATTERN to them which should hereafter believe on Him to life everlasting" (Ver.16). The moral: Take your stand with Paul. Admit you are a sinner and his Saviour will save you too.

COMING HOME, HELPING VETS GET JOBS There's an extensive new online program to help American military personnel, their spouses, dependents, and caregivers in quickly and efficiently finding employment. It's a system designed, in part to bridge the gap between civilian lingo and military jargon: Chad Sowash is with DirectEmployers Association, a non-profit consortium of over 600 leading U.S. employers. They announced that over 5,800 dot-jobs (.jobs) domains are meant to create employment services for returning veterans and their families. The domains help military personnel in transitioning from active duty to employment opportunities in the civilian workforce. The main gateway web site is www.veterans.jobs.

Donald Trump But the focus on Trump’s adoption of this issue has done more for him than garner publicity: It has obscured the emptiness of his political agenda. Trump’s solutions for the country’s problems range from incoherent to fallacious — and cause far more concern than his relentless birther hype. His attempt to exploit the visceral emotion surrounding Obama’s origins is just the leading edge of a sweepingly demagogic platform. Trump seems either completely unprepared, or is basing his potential candidacy on crowd-pleasing platitudes, xenophobia and fantastic claims – which, frighteningly, he sounds like he believes - that he can solve problems through the force of his

personality. He has no serious plan to reduce the deficit. It’s all a matter, he says, of putting foreigners in their place. “What I really would be strongly in favor of is having countries that are ripping us off contribute hundreds of billions of dollars back into this economy,” Trump said in a March interview with the conservative newspaper Human Events, “and you wouldn’t have to worry so much about cutting too much out of the budget.” The centerpiece of his deficit reduction program appears to be a 25 percent tax on all Chinese imports. He has little to say about whether Americans would end up paying the tax themselves in higher prices or whether this would start a trade war with China — our third largest export market. Trump said, in an interview with NBC’s Savannah Guthrie this week, that, once we enforce this, China will have no choice but to fall into line. But the Chinese leadership is famously obdurate and opaque, and its response can have consequences that are impossible to foresee. The trade relationship with China is a complicated, carefully played game that has ramifications far beyond exports and imports. Chinese cooperation is often crucial to U.S. foreign policy in the U.N. Security Council. It can help us or hurt us with respect to North Korea and nuclear arms proliferation. It considers a sovereign U.S. ally, Taiwan, to be part of “One China.” A president must take an integrated approach to international policy, not just brandish threats. Trump also sees no need to reform entitlements, which will magically attain solvency on their own. “When this country becomes profitable again, we can take care of our sick; we can take care of our needy,” he told Human Events. “We don’t have to cut Social Security; we don’t have to cut Medicare and Medicaid. We can take care of people that need to be taken care of. And I’ll be able to do that.” And he says we won’t need to raise taxes either. Trump is suggesting that, as our economy improves, it will expand to cover trillions of dollars in future deficits, an assumption held by no one else that I’m aware of. And his specific plan to spur the needed growth in the first place seems to be haranguing foreigners.

NEW RULES TO PROTECT AIR TRAVELERS BY: BOB MORRISON More protections for air travelers – when things go haywire. Like the horror stories you may have heard of – planes sitting on the tarmac, for 9 hours in one case: Tiki Trips President/CEO Dena McDonald, at a travel agency in Dallas, talking about expansion of the ban on long tarmac delays to cover foreign carriers at U.S. airports, also limiting tarmac delays on all airlines’ international flights to four hours. Fines apply to violations, although longer delays are allowed under certain conditions. This is one among a number of new regulations, and some broadening of existing regulations, announced by the U.S. Dept. of Transportation. They also require a refund of checked baggage fees if the luggage is permanently lost. Some measures apply to how travelers shop. Airlines will be required to include all taxes and fees with advertised prices and allow customers to cancel an advance reservation within 24 hours of making it without penalty. The rules also boost compensation to fliers who are involuntarily ‘bumped’ off overbooked flights. Most of the new regulations take effect Aug. 23. Even travel agents can learn something, when airlines decide to – as Dena McDonald sees it – hold passengers hostage on planes. She thought she had her trip – to see a friend get married – all planned, just right. When something went wrong: Although she was still able to enjoy the wedding reception, McDonald, who is president & CEO of the Tiki Trips travel agency in Dallas, says she learned the hard way that one should always travel with plans to arrirve at least one day in advance of important events, like a wedding. Publisher’s Statement on Death of Osama bin Laden LONG BEACH - Long Beach Times Newspaper Publisher Richard Love issued the following statement after President Obama announced late Sunday night that Osama bin Laden was killed in a raid by U.S. military and intelligence personnel: “The death of Osama bin Laden, almost a decade after he orchestrated the murder of 3,000 innocent American citizens and foreign nationals, is a significant milestone and a welcome development in our fight against al Qaeda. “President Obama, members of the Administration, and the men and women of our intelligence community and our armed forces are all to be commended for their leadership in bringing the mastermind of the devastating September 11th attacks – as well as the U.S. African embassy bombings, the attack on the U.S.S. Cole, and other deadly acts of terrorism against innocent people around the world – to justice. “This is a significant day for people who believe in freedom, justice and peace around the world, but it should not diminish our efforts to focus on real security threats to our nation and our interests, or from bringing our men and women home from war in a timely manner.” “In the past and under the watch and administration of President George W. Bush it was reported in major media that several opportunies to kill Osama bin Laden was not authorized.” “With President Barak Obama as Chief Military Command, seeking justice, the authorization was given.” “May God continue blessing America.” Richard Love, Publisher Long Beach Times Newspaper

DONALD GETS TRUMPED

After weeks of allegations, led by Donald Trump, that he was not born in the U.S. and, as a result, not legally able to serve in the nation’s highest office, President Obama released his long-form birth certificate to the public. According to the official document, the President was born in the U.S., Hawaii to be exact, and not in Kenya or Indonesia, as his critics would have you believe. Fringe groups have been alleging that Obama Judge Greg Mathis wasn’t born in the U.S. since he announced his run for the presidency three years ago. At the time, he submitted an official record of birth, a document most states give to anyone seeking a copy of their birth certificate, as proof of his citizenship. But the birthers–those who maintain Obama was not born in the U.S. - didn’t accept that document; they wanted to see his original birth certificate. The President, who chose to rise above the foolishness, said it was finally time to dispel the rumors because the media was giving more attention to this non-controversy than it was to important national issues, such as the economy and public safety. When Obama released the document, he pointedly compared those who were making an issue out of where he was born to side shows and carnival barkers…and he was right; that is exactly what Trump has become. No one outside of the fringe is taking Trump seriously as a presidential candidate. Instead, people tune in to see what shocking thing he’ll say next. Americans aren’t looking to Trump to leadership – they are looking to him for laughs. Now, Trump wants to see the President’s school transcripts, saying he doesn’t know how the President, who admitted to not being the most studious youngster, was accepted into Harvard Law. Trump maintains the President got into Harvard because of affirmative action. We don’t know how Obama got into Harvard Law…but he did. And he went on to edit the Harvard Law Review at the end of his first year and became president of the journal in his second year. Even if affirmative action opened the doors of Harvard to Obama, he made the most of the opportunity given to him and excelled. And that is all that matters. The President should not bow to these latest demands…he should treat Trump like the clown he is: trapped in a big media circus of his own making. Judge Greg Mathis

YOU MAKE THE CALL BY WILFRED M. PHILLIPS JR.

From his forthcoming book Over 40 and still Single… So you’re single, over 40, and you’re still looking for a mate. You passed out your cards, gave out your cell number numerous Wilfred Phillips times to people who you may have interest in you. You even told family and friends that you are interested in dating. You stand in front of your bathroom mirror and ask yourself, “I’m a well dressed sexy spirit. I’m no Thug, or Hoochee Mama, why no calls?” Maybe it’s time for you to make the call. Women! It’s ok to call men; they will appreciate your call, even if they don’t call you. How well do I know how tough it is sitting at home alone on a beautiful Saturday night by the telephone and watching reruns on TV. In order to have action in life, you must make a reaction in your life. Make the call; what do you have to lose! When you decide to make that call, pay close attention to the conversation. If it’s exciting maybe the two of you may want to meet. Use common sense; try not to call after 11pm. Any call after 11pm can be considered as a BOOTY call. I was like the above person sitting by the phone debating should I call and wondered at the same time what “If’s”. You won’t know until you make the call. It’s also a quick way to find out if the person of your interest is married or is with someone. Your call will surprise the person of your interest that you haven’t forgotten them. Who knows it may take a second call that may bring the two of you together. Be open minded that something good will arise. Please be polite, even if the conversation leads to nowhere. In today’s telephone communications, there are blocked calls and answering machines. “What do I do if I run in to this encounter?” Don’t leave a message if it’s your first call. You want a live voice. If you call a second time and get blocked, or an answering machine comes on, leave a message that you did try to contact them, and let them handle it from there. If you do decide to leave a message, Think of what you’ll say before you make that call, and don’t be afraid of failure. Remember these calls are painless.

Freedom Riders Reunited On Oprah FROM STAFF REPORTS

CHICAGO -- On Wednesday, May 4, the 50th anniversary of the Freedom Rides, “The Oprah Winfrey Show” honored the brave and determined group of 436 Americans – men and women, black and white – who joined together in a peaceful demonstration against racial injustice and segregation and risked their lives to change a nation forever. In a powerful and historic hour, Oprah welcomes 178 surviving members of the Freedom Rides in one of the largest gatherings of riders since 1961. Said Winfrey, " “As an African American woman born in Mississippi in 1954 and raised in the south, I owe a deep debt of gratitude to the Freedom Riders, as do we all. I know my life would be different were it not for them."” During the episode, Congressman John Lewis is face-to-face again with Elwin Wilson, the man who brutally beat him in South Carolina while he attempted to enter a “Whites Only” waiting room at a bus station. Joining Congressman John Lewis are other Freedom Riders, who were among the 300 who were jailed at Mississippi’s State Penitentiary (Parchman Farm) to help overthrow segregation, sharing their personal recollections. Also, Janie Forsyth McKinney, who was just a 12-year-old girl when she braved an angry mob to help the Freedom Riders, recounts the harrowing story of the bus that was set ablaze in front of her father’s grocery store. Plus, U.S. Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy’s then assistant, John Seigenthaler, talks about the beating he received while he tried to protect protesters. Winfrey added, " “On behalf of all of America, may I say you make us proud to call ourselves American. …We stand in reverence for what you have done… as we look at the courage that you all showed at such a young age.”"

Higher HIV Risk In Black Gay Justice Department Moves Men Linked To Partner Choice, Against Miss. School District Risk Perception In Desegregation Case FROM STAFF HEALTH REPORTS FROM STAFF REPORTS BALTIMORE — Young black men who have sex with men (MSM) get infected with WASHINGTON – The Department of Justice has asked the federal court overseeing a HIV nearly five times more often than MSM from other races, even though they don't have longstanding desegregation case against the school district in Cleveland, Miss., to enforce more unprotected sex. the previously-entered desegregation orders governing the district and compel the district’s compliance with federal law. In a motion filed with the court, the United States alleges that the school district has failed to dismantle the vestiges of segregation in its schools, and that schools that were racially segregated by law in 1969, when the district was originally ordered to desegregate, remain so today. Prior to 1969, schools on the west side of the railroad tracks that run through Cleveland were white schools segregated by law. More than forty years later, these schools maintain their character and reputation as white schools with a student body and faculty that are disproportionately white. Similarly, schools on the east side of the railroad tracks – originally black schools segregated by law – have never been integrated; and remain all-black or virtually-all-black schools today. In most cases, the schools on the east side and west side of the railroad tracks are less than three miles apart. After unsuccessful attempts to work with the school district on this matter, the United States has asked the court to rule that the school district has violated the existing desegregation orders and federal law, and order the district to devise and implement a desegregation plan that will eliminate the vestiges of the district’s former dual school system in an expeditious manner. “It is intolerable for school districts to continue operating schools that retain their racial identity from the Jim Crow era,” said Thomas E. Perez, Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division. “If school districts are not willing to work collaboratively to eradicate the vestiges of de jure segregated schools, we will ask the courts to take the steps necessary to ensure that students of all racial backgrounds have the opportunity to attend The discrepancy has long mystified public health experts but a new study by investigators diverse, inclusive schools.” at Johns Hopkins and elsewhere now offers a possible explanation for it. Enforcement of the court orders mandating the desegregation of school districts formerly The study found that young black MSM -- a group that includes openly gay and bisexual segregated by law is a top priority of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division. For men, as well as those who have sex with men but do not identify themselves as gay or example, on March 23, 2011, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Missisbisexual -- select partners and judge these partners' HIV status in a specific way. sippi entered an order modifying the 1969 desegregation order governing the operations These men show a clear preference for masculine men, while also equating masculinity of the school district in Leake County, Miss. with lower HIV risk. The most notable findings include an overwhelming preference for masculine partners, who attended a community meeting, the Department of Justice and the school district accepting masculine partners as dominant in the sex act and leaving to them decisions about jointly requested the closure of two schools as well as the reassignment of students and condom use, perceiving masculine men as low risk for HIV and feminine men as high risk. faculty, and improvements to the quality of education and extracurricular activities at the "There may be no difference in HIV prevalence between masculine-looking and feminine- remaining schools. In other words, even though young black MSM have unprotected sex just as often as others, they may be having unprotected sex in riskier ways with partners whose HIV status they often miscalculate, the researchers explain. LONG BEACH TIMES NEWSPAPER

Victory in Jeremy Marks case People's movement keeps Jeremy out of jail as case concludes

Supporters push back police and D.A. pressure FROM CRIME REPORTS The Jeremy Marks Defense Committee is happy to announce a major victory in Jeremy’s case. Under pressure from the growing people's movement to defend Jeremy, the Los Angeles County District Attorney was forced to offer Jeremy a plea deal that results in no jail time. The court accepted the plea last week. His case is now over. Under the plea, every charge was dropped except one count of “resisting arrest.” This count will be dropped to a misdemeanor and expunged from Jeremy’s record once he completes three years of probation. Not only is there no jail time for Jeremy, he also will not have a felony “strike” on his record. The conclusion of Jeremy’s case is not full justice. We know that Jeremy is innocent of all charges. He is not guilty of “resisting arrest” or anything else. Full justice would have required all charges to be dropped and no further legal obligations for Jeremy and his family. But given the extremely hostile attitude of the police and D.A.—who wanted to send another 18-year-old Black youth to jail for almost a decade—the outcome should be celebrated as a victory. In a message thanking supporters, Jeremy’s mother Rochelle Pittman said, “The movement is the reason that Jeremy did not end up in jail for seven years with a ‘strike’ against him. I am proud to have been part of this campaign. Thank you to everyone who helped keep my son out of jail.” ‘We can fight back and win’ The only reason Jeremy is not in jail today is because of the actions of the movement to support and defend him. This is why he is no longer facing any jail time. If the D.A. “When I saw the look of relief on Jeremy’s face as the case ended, had his way, Jeremy that’s all that I needed. The word ‘expungement’ is a victory, even would be behind though I don’t like the word ‘probation.’” bars, wasting years -Rochelle Pittman, Jeremy’s mother (pictured above) of his young adult life. But, right now, Jeremy is exactly where he should be—at home with his family and finishing high school with his friends in Los Angeles. It was only the actions of the people’s movement, with the full support of Jeremy’s family that forced the D.A. to back down and end the case with no jail time. Inside sources told the Jeremy Marks Defense Committee that the D.A.’s office “wanted the case to go away” because it was “getting to much media attention.” The case of Jeremy Marks proves that justice movements are at the center of real change. People’s movements can fight back and score important victories for working and poor people, even when faced with seemingly insurmountable odds. How we got here

Charity Projects Scams My name is Mrs. SARAH King,

Jeremy and his brother at a fundraising event.

Jeremy was arrested in May 2010 on trumped up felony charges of “lynching,” resisting arrest and, later, phony gang “enhancement” charges were added. What did he do wrong? Jeremy attempted to protect another young, Black high school student who was viciously beaten by L.A. School police.

He simply videotaped the cop beating his classmate. But the D.A. and the police were out to get Jeremy from the beginning. They wanted to “send a message” that youth, especially youth of color, have no right to videotape police misconduct. They wanted to intimidate others from taking action and asserting their constitutional rights. This is why the D.A. kept Jeremy in adult jail for nearly nine months without cause. This is why the D.A. raised Jeremy’s bail to an insurmountable sum and pursued the maximum possible sentence. Because of these outrages, and his family’s tireless work, a people’s movement to defend Jeremy formed. Grass roots organizations and activists came together to form the Jeremy Marks Defense Committee, a coalition that was anchored by the ANSWER Coalition (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism). The main demand was, “Drop all charges now!” and the main slogan was “Videotaping police misconduct is not a crime, it’s self defense!” In just a matter of months, thousands of people in all 50 states and more than 26 countries signed the petition to drop all charges against Jeremy. The JMDC also held protests, meetings, and media conferences, sold t-shirts, mobilized for every court hearing and sponsored a major statewide speaking tour for Rochelle Pittman, Jeremy’s heroic mother. The case gained media coverage in many newspapers, radio programs and major TV news channels. Before the movement took action, D.A. Steve Cooley wanted Jeremy to accept a plea deal of three years in jail. Inside the courtroom, the D.A. and judge put up one legal roadblock after another. It was a lopsided legal battle where important evidence in the D.A.’s possession was not shared with the defense team. The prosecution presented lie after lie about the existence of an additional video recording of the incident that would have strengthened Jeremy’s case. The cops and the D.A. took their aggressive campaign to Jeremy’s family home. In January, the police executed a Gestapo-style raid, drawing guns on Jeremy’s family and neighbors and illegally seizing attorney-client privileged documents. In the face of so much foul play, there is no telling what direction the case would have taken in a courtroom. But one thing is clear: Jeremy was facing a frontal assault on his basic rights. The authorities wanted to lock him up and throw away the key. The Jeremy Marks Defense Campaign pushed back hard against this assault on Jeremy and his family. Grassroots activism spread the word about the injustice to hundreds of thousands of people. The victory in Jeremy’s case is an example to all people who fight for justice. If we unite and move together without fear, we can push back against the police, prisons and all institutions of inequality and racism. This experience, along with the steadfast courage of Jeremy and his family, has shown us that if we fight back, we can win. -From all of us with the Jeremy Marks Defense Committee The Jeremy Marks Defense Committee is a campaign of the ANSWER Coalition in partnership with other social justice organizations.

My Sister, The Honoree

Long Beach Times Newspaper

BY KIM T. JONES The Soroptimist Women Who Make A Difference Awards Luncheon was held on Saturday, April 9, 2011 at The Grand located in Long Beach, California. The excitement in the air could be felt the moment I stepped into the lobby of The Grand. It was apparent that something extraordinary was about to take place. There was even a buzz in the ladies room. The guests and honorees mingled in the hallways and patio area while the members of the oganization prepared for the big event. Soroptimist International of Long Beach has been recognizing the achievements of women in the Long Beach community for over 19 years with the Women Who Make A Difference Awards. The Awards were presented in the following categories: Ruby Award for Women Helping Women, Businesses and Organizations Advancing the Status of Women, and Women of Distinction. A Women of Distinction was described as someone who has achieved distinction in their career or field of interest. She is considered a role model for other woman and meets the following criteria: Has made outstanding achievements in her profession, business or voluntary activities during a period of at least 10 years Demonstrated exemplary Robin S. Thorne character and integrity along with outstanding ability and leadership, Distinguished herself in one of the Soroptimist program areas, Contributed beyond the scope of her profession or position. This year was extra special because my sister, Robin Thorne, was one of the eight women honored at this year’s luncheon. She was recognized as a Woman of Distinction as CEO of CTI Environmental, Inc., an environmental construction and engineering consulting services firm. CTI made it to the big leagues among hard-hat firms of its size with its first major sub-contract, a $3 million project cleaning up lead-contaminated soil for the ten-mile extension of the I-405 diamond lane as far north as US 101. Robin is also a Commissioner for the Sustainability City Commissioner of Long Beach and immediate past Board Chair for the YMCA Downtown Community Development Branch. Robin gave a rivoting talk about her life and likened her speech to that of a flower. She stated the importance of a flower needing good soil for its roots and water, sunshine, anchoring, and pruning to grow. She discussed the struggles and triumphs experienced and the various stages of growth throughout her career and personal life. Robin also talked about the importance of her faith and family support. When all was said and done, Robin received a standing ovation! Robin had an array of guests in attendance; her son Ryan from Long Beach, mother, Barbara Thorne and sister Kim Jones traveled from Philadelphia, PA, and her sister Shannon Johnson traveled from Atlanta, GA . Also in attendance were a group of ten aspiring teenage ladies from the area who were sponsored by various individuals and organizations within the community. In addition, Robin’s business partner, John Talbot , and a host of other fellow business owners and friends were in attendance to support her. The women honored were very accomplished and I was impressed by all. Another that I felt was very courageous and impressive was Cindy Allen, President of ETA Advertising. Cindy was a former Long Beach police officer who was injured in the line-of-duty after a 12 year career. When Cindy got back on her feet, she made a dramatic career change, and renewed a long-time interest in graphic design. She soon established her own marketing company which grew and became very successful in a very short period of time. She currently has a staff of 15 and offers a full range of basic marketing services, event planning, email marketing and web design. Other honorees included Anita Gibbons, Long Beach City College Women’s & Men’s Resource Center; Margauz Kohut, California Conference for Equality and Justice; Jody Cormack, California State University Long Beach; Dr. Kimberly Bedell, Miller Children’s Hospital; Arlene Mercer, Food Finders; Dr. Teri Tan, Work in the Cambodian Community. There were over 250 people who attended the awards luncheon. The event was successful and enjoyed by all.

Daniel Avila

Avila ran for the Thousand Oaks City Council in 2004, and was charged with hacking into the Verizon wireless system and sending bogus text messages to thousands of residents between midnight and 4 a.m. in the name of a fellow candidate. The District Attorney's office filed charges including computer fraud and identity theft against him. While he was in jail on those charges in 2008, Avila threatened in a phone call to kill one prosecutor, and wrote letters to five female prosecutors threatening to rape them, kill them with a fishing knife and burn their bodies with lighter fluid. Avila has been in custody continuously since March 2006, including two stints in mental hospitals. The sentence gives him credit for 279 days served on the current charges, which means he must serve more than five-and-a-half additional years.

Avila was convicted of six counts of making criminal threats and six counts of threatening public officials on April 4 in Ventura County Superior Court. He was sentenced yesterday. The case was prosecuted by Deputy Attorney General Jonathan Kline. "As the chief law enforcement officer of California," Attorney General Kamala D. I was appalled to see thousands of Americans on national television celebrating "Honor your father the death of a man. What does this say about "Americans?" -Elizabeth This country was founded on violence from Day One and its hands will forever be stained with the blood of the indigenous people who were here before the Mayflower, the millions who perished in the Ma’afa, two World Wars, the hundreds of my people who were lynched, Hiroshima and Nagaski, the Korean War and Vietnam, the riots of the 1960’s, the un-videotaped Rodney Kings and the carnage associated with the miseducation of a people in a public school system that is operating just as it was intended to also from Day One. Did I leave out anything?! Due to this sordid past, I am not surprised that these jubilant Americans are dancing in the street because one man has been killed. Who really are the terrorists?! -Debra
