Snoop Dogg Tribute for Hip-Hop Artist Nate Dogg Funeral will be Saturday at the Spruce Goose

Photo by Kim Webster LONG BEACH CA - As a child Nathaniel D. Hale began singing gospel music at Life Line Baptist Church in Clarksdale, Mississippi and New Hope Baptist Church in Long Beach. But, Nathaniel was destined to become known as Nate Dogg; a Hip-Hop artist, pioneer and legend. “His career started here at VIP Records as a member of the group 213,” said Kelvin Anderson, owner of VIP Records in Long Beach. The group recorded their first demo at a recording studio in the VIP Record Store. “The group consisted of Snoop Dogg, Warren G, and Nate Dogg. This threesome brought a unique style of music with rap lyrics and singing. Nate Dogg was the singer of the group and never before had a rap song been performed with someone singing the hook. This is something commonly heard today which is a style created by Nate Dogg,” added Kelvin. In addition to his own recordings, Nate Dogg sung hooks for numerous artists including Snoop Dogg, Warren G, Tupac, DJ Quik, Eminem, Ludacris and Dr. Dre. Collaborations with Eminem, Ludacris, Dr. Dre/ Snoop Dogg, and Warren G earned Nate Dogg four Grammy nominations. When Death Row Records’ Dr. Dre heard the tape at a party, he was instantly hooked on Nate Dogg’s uniquely soulful voice. Snoop Dogg tweets says: “We lost a true legend n hip hop n rnb. One of my best friends n a brother to me since 1986 when I was a sophomore at poly high where we met” “I love u buddy luv. U will always b wit me 4ever n a day u put the g n g funk u put the 1 n 213 n u put yo stamp on evrybdy u ever didit wit” “I miss u cuzz I am so sad but so happy I got to grow up wit u and I will c u again n heaven cuz u know d slogan” Nathaniel Dwayne Hale, better known as Nate Dogg and regarded as the soulman of G-Funk, has died at the age of 41.

Two years later, in 1992, he would make his official debut on “The Chronic,” performing the outro on “Deeez Nuuuts.” The album went platinum and was one of the best selling albums of the year. Together with Dre, Nate would turn his trademark baritone into what became officially known as the G-funk sub-genre of West Coast gangsta rap. Hale made several guest appearances on a number of big hits over the next couple of years, including Warren G’s “Regulate,” which appeared on the soundtrack to Above the Rim; 2Pac’s Thug Life: Volume 1 and All Eyez on Me albums; and Snoop’s short film and soundtrack album Murder was the Case, according to Allsource.com. He soon became one of rap music’s most prominent chrooners, providing the chorus on tracks by numerous artists on the East and West coasts, including Pharaoh Monch, 50 Cent, Mos Def and Mac 10, according to Answers.com. Hale left Death Row in 1997 and formed his own label, Dogg Foundation, through Celestial Breakaway Entertainment, on which he released his double album G-Funk Classics Vols. 1 & 2 in 1998 after battling with Death Row over the rights to the first volume, according to Answers.com. Music and Me on Elektra followed in 2001. Three years later, his 213 trio reunited to release The Hard Way. The G-funk superstar’s long-awaited self-titled album that was originally slated to come out in 2004 was finally released on June 3, 2008. Born Aug. 19. 1969, Hale attended but eventually dropped out of Poly High School at age 16. He soon joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served for the next three years before being dishonorably discharged, according to Answers.com. Hale’s health had been declining in recent years. He suffered a stroke on Dec. 19, 2007, and it was announced a month later that the stroke had paralyzed the left side of his body. The following September, he suffered a second stroke.

Prior to these health setbacks, Hale had been working on coordinating his newly formed gospel choir, Innate Praise. We’ve located a YouTube video of the choir’s first public performance in 2007. Nate Dogg made his transition on March 15, 2011. Viewing will be Friday, March 25 at New Hope Baptist Church, 1160 New York St, Long Beach, CA. Funeral services will be at the Spruce Goose in Shoreline Village, Long Beach CA. “He will be greatly missed,” said Kelvin. Photo by Kim Webster

Minister Louis Farrakhan advises President Barack Obama on Libya policy:" BY BROTHER JESSE CHICAGO (FinalCall.com) - In his first interview since the successful Nation of Islam Saviours' Day 2011 convention, the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan sat down in the studio with popular radio host and long-time friend Cliff Kelley on WVON-AM 1690 for a two and a half hour conversation. A critically important portion President Obama of the discussion centered on the unrest in the North African country of Libya which the Minister spoke about for the very first time during his recent keynote address. He provided even more layered contextual understanding when questioned by Mr. Kelley March 10.Then the subject of Libya was raised. When the western media began reporting on Libya, Feb. 15, it seemed as if it was a foregone conclusion that Col. Muammar Gadhafi would be ousted in the country he has led for over 42 years. Now, nearly a month later, he remains in power. On March 12, the Arab League agreed on asking the United Nations to impose a no-fly zone over Libya, days earlier, the African Union voted against it. Al-Arabiya reported March 14 U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton arrived in Paris to sit down with Foreign Ministers from Russian, Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan. A no-fly zone plan is reportedly being presented to NATO on March 15, according to Secy. Clinton. It is no secret that the Nation of Islam and Minister Farrakhan have enjoyed a mutually beneficial relationship with the Libyan leader for decades. The United States has long opposed Col. Gadhafi and attempted to force him out of office even bombing his country during the Reagan administration, Minister Farrakhan noted. The Minister blasted President Obama and Secy. Clinton for their arrogance in meddling in another sovereign nation's affairs and publicly recommending regime change. Min. Farrakhan instructed Americans to look beneath the surface to see who stands to benefit from the unrest, and warned President Obama to be careful of the words coming from advisors lobbying him to move in with military forces to depose Col. Gadhafi. "Well, today our dear brother (Obama) has to be very, very careful in this decision that he and his Secretary of State, and [French President Nicolas] Sarkozy and [British] Prime Minister [David] Cameron and others are planning. They would love to go into Libya and kill Brother Gadhafi, and kill his children as they did with Saddam Hussein and his sons, Qusay and Uday. You must remember, dear people of America, that whenever government wants you to think and act in a certain way that would bring justification to an action that they are already planning to make, they must make the person that they hate a 'boogey man,' " he said. Col. Gadhafi, who led a bloodless coup against a U.S.

ally over 40 years ago, has seen constant negative publicity and was once called the "Mad Dog of the Middle East" by American leaders and analysts. To President Obama, Minister Farrakhan delivered a pointed warning: "Don't let these wicked demons move you in a direction that will absolutely ruin your future with your people in Africa and throughout the world. They don't like the way you handled (former Egyptian President Hosni) Mubarak! They don't like the way you're handling the situation in the Arab world! So I would advise you to be careful-and move with wisdom and skill. Read the full report by Ashahed M. Muhammad @ http://www.finalcall. com/artman/publish/National_News_2/ article_7657.shtml

OPINION: ONE MAN’S THOUGHT’S I hope President Obama can weather these 'storms' to the degree that he not only gets us out of all the political turmoil in the Middle East, but also, get the economy out of the proverbial toilet. If you listen to the Rupublican pundits, they're having a field day with all of the problems the economy is having, and they can blame the president for them, so they think. The national debt, as everyone is aware, didn't start with Obama's administration. We've had it all along. However, the national debt is a 'quicksand' we seem to be sinking deeper into every day. it will take drastic measures to stop the slide, and there appears to be no clear remedy. Yep, let's get our troops out of the Middle East, Europe, Asia, and anywhere else that it's causing us to spend tax dollars. That F-15 that crashed in Libya yesterday was worth around $30 million dollars. Multiply that by the cost of operating a naval task force, and Air Force and Army aircraft and troops in that area, which alone, is many more millions of (Tax) dollars. And that doesn't include Iraq, Kuwait, Afghanistan, Europe, and Asia. One of the military's philosophies I heard when I was in the military was that it's better to fight the war 'over there, than over here.' So, keeping the conflicts off American soil seems to be the reason we have military commitments world wide. Is it worth $150 Billion a year to do so? While I sort of agree with the philosophy, that's a nice chunk of change that could be spent on our own economy. Respectfully, Clint

Prison and Healthcare Crisis Limits Opportunities for People of Color BY DR. HENRIE M. TREADWELL Atlanta, GA (BlackNews.com) - Legal scholars, health-care advocates and public officials participating in the Freedom's Voice Conference in April depicted a health and prison crisis that is limiting opportunities for people of color and devastating our communities. The three-day conference, which was sponsored by the Morehouse School of Medicine's Community Voices program, offered recommendations on how to address many of the problems. But the esteemed panelists also sent a clear message that there must be decisive action to reverse public policies sending record numbers of people to prison, leaving those outside prison walls without access to health care and restricting people of color to segregated communities. Dr. David Satcher, former U.S. Surgeon General, set the tone for the conference by recalling that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once stated that "of all of the forms of inequalities known to man, injustice in health is the most shocking and inhumane injustice." What the conference reinforced is that as bad as the health inequalities were in Dr. King's time, people of color today often face worst circumstances. Dr. Satcher put today's realities in context. During our times, Dr. Satcher said, "We know that inequality in criminal justice, inequality in jobs, inequality in working conditions all lead to injustice in health. We know that." With public policy debates intensifying due to this year's presidential election, the conference cited policies that should be expanded because they are helping communities, while criticizing policies negatively impacting communities of color. For instance, Nkechi Taifa, a senior policy analyst at the Open Society Policy Center, praised enactment of the Second Chance Act, which authorizes that strategic plans be developed for assisting juvenile and adult inmates to successfully reenter their communities and help them find jobs. Data shows that 700,000 inmates are released from prison each year, but about two-thirds return to prison within three years.

Ms. Taifa said the measure will provide former convicts with better access to family unification, job training, education, housing, substance abuse and mental health services. But Ms. Taifa also warned that only authorizing legislation was signed into law, and that supporters must fight for full funding of the program. In addition, she sharply attacked the consequences of the Adoption and Safe Families Act. While encouraging adoptions, it requires the termination of parental rights when a child is in foster care 15 of the previous 22 months. The law is particularly hard on incarcerated parents seeking to connect with their children. "Social and criminal justice policies and laws generated by the war on drugs still negatively and punitively impact those returning to society," Ms. Taifa said, noting that more measures are needed to help the children of incarcerated parents. Throughout the three days of the conference, many other issues were discussed, such as the rising number of uninsured Americans, laws that incarcerate people for minor crimes or drug violations, and the high incidence of infant mortality among African-American women. Another recurring theme was the challenges that men of color face in our society. Judge Greg Mathis of Michigan noted that African-American men represent nearly 60 percent of the nation's prison population, but are only six percent of our society. "What is the effect of that?" Judge Mathis asked. "Well, the effect, as it relates to health is: One, we have poverty, disproportionate poverty, single-family homes. And then, of course, and this might be somewhat controversial, but it's true, we have a higher rate of HIV and AIDS because in the prisons men engage - many of them, very many of them, in homosexual activity." Judge Mathis also noted that because only two states dispense condoms in prisons - Vermont and Mississippi -- inmates have a high rate of HIV and AIDS, and then are released into communities across the country where they spread the disease. Moreover, Dr. John A. Powell, who is with the Kirwan

Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity at Ohio State University, lamented that over the last 20 years inequities affecting people of color have worsened significantly after a period of improvement. "The United States has greater inequality than it's had since the 1920s. InJudge Greg Mathis equality is expanding at a rapid rate, and the inequality that we experience today actually started in the 1980s," said Dr. Powell, a nationally recognized authority in the area of civil rights, civil liberties and issues related to race, poverty and the law. "From 1965 to 1980, inequality in the United States actually became compressed...There were all these programs like the War on Poverty. Something was happening in the country that was moving people closer together, and that's actually a very positive thing in terms of health outcome." But Dr. Powell noted that in 1980 inequality began expanding. "It's also racially coded," he said. "Now, if you look at our life expectancy compared to the rest of the world, in 1980 we were Number 14. In 2007 we're Number 29, so in the same period that we see rapid inequality growing in the United States, we see a rapid decline in terms of our health status as a country. In our infant mortality rate, we're down to Number 31, behind countries that have fewer resources than we do as a country." Noting the racial disparities, Dr. Powell said an AfricanAmerican woman with a college degree is more likely to have a child that's either low weight or dies in infancy than a white woman who doesn't even graduate from high school. Meanwhile, Angela Glover Blackwell, CEO and Founder of PolicyLink, emphasized how much "place matters" in

Board of Supervisors Approves $31 Million-Construction Project for Natural History Museum of Los Angeles FROM LBT’S STAFF REPORTS Los Angeles— The Los Angeles Natural History Museum, one of the County’s premiere cultural institutions, will enter the final phase of a seven-year renovation as a result of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors’ decision Tuesday to permit the museum to use $31 million in privately-raised funds. The monies, which will be used to create new indoor and outdoor features, comes from the Natural History Museum Foundation. The action taken by the board amends an existing agreement between the County and the foundation and extends the foundation’s authority to manage and fund the construction of additional improvements to the museum. Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, who represents Supervisor Ridley-Thomas the Second District where the history museum is located, urged the board to take all necessary steps to complete its ongoing transformation. “The Natural History Museum is a County gem,” Supervisor Ridley-Thomas said. “Thousands of school children have their introduction to the Age of Mammals exhibit; through hands-on exhibits, they handle bugs and butterflies, and families travel billions of years back in time through one of the world’s most extensive collections of artifacts. “The projects to be completed with this funding are practical, beautiful and environmentally engaging,” he continued. “They expand pedestrian access to a campus where indoor and outdoor activities and exhibits will blend seamlessly. Everyone who traverses Exposition Boulevard will have the opportunity to witnesses this transformation.” Among the improvements will be a landscaped amphitheater for outdoor programming and learning gardens with 10 distinct zones and a small pond. Landscaped “green” fences will replace the concrete walls that previously surrounded the parking lots on the museum’s north side with planting designed to attract birds and pollinating insects. Once renovations are completed, the museum will become a gathering place for County residents as well as visitors from around the world seeking a deeper appreciation of the connections between our natural and cultural worlds, said Museum President Jane G. Pisano. “With a new elevated pedestrian walkway, an outdoor ticketing plaza and the gleaming, light-filled Otis Booth Pavilion showcasing one of the signature specimens, a 7,000-pound fin whale, the new 3.5-acre outdoor habitat will be a nature destination and learning environment in the heart of the city,” Pisano said.

Tax Preparation Tips

TINA ROBINSON UNION BANK, N.A. SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT, REGIONAL MANAGER Ben Franklin once said, “In this world nothing is certain but death and taxes.” For some, tax season is one of the most distressing times of the year – with anxiety over searching for documents, worrying about what you might owe and the fear of an audit starting long before the filing deadline. Filing taxes may be inevitable, but the following tips can help make preparing your 2010 taxes a little easier: Get Organized Gather all the documents you’ll need to file your taxes: W-2, 1099s and other forms, receipts, canceled checks and other documents that support income or deductions you’re claiming on your return. Starting this year the IRS will no longer be mailing paper tax packages. If you are not going to file your taxes

electronically and need paper forms, you can find them online, at local IRS offices, your local library or post office. Consider Filing Electronically Whether you use a purchased software program or you qualify to utilize free tax software offered by the IRS or California Franchise Tax Board, filing electronically is simple, safe and secure. Electronic filing can help reduce mistakes as a computer checks for mathematical errors and, if you are expecting a return, filing electronically will help speed your refund, especially if you choose direct deposit. Do Your Homework Hundreds of changes are made to federal tax laws every year. Dedicating some time to learning about major changes may help save you money and time. Check with your financial advisor or you can find current information and changes in the law on the Web at the IRS (www.irs.gov) and California Franchise Tax Board (www.ftb.ca.gov) Web sites. Get Help If You Need It When you have a very complex tax return, hiring a professional may be a wise choice. A certified public accountant or licensed tax consultant may cost you a few hundred dollars but they might find extra tax deductions or credits that could save a substantial amount of money on your taxes. If you earned less than $49,000, you can get free face-to-face help on your tax return at IRS offices or from Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) programs and if you're over 60, you can get help from the Tax Counseling for the Elderly program run by AARP. File on Time The IRS has approved April 18, 2011 as the tax filing deadline for 2010 tax returns and extension requests (since Emancipation Day, a holiday observed in the District of Columbia, falls on Friday, April 15, the usual tax deadline). State taxes, however, are still due on April 15. Be sure to file and pay on time or expect to pay late fees and interest. If you can’t file by the deadline, file an extension and pay as much of your taxes as possible at that time to minimize interest and penalties. Keep Your Taxes on File Federal law requires that you keep the records that substantiate your income and deductions in the event you are audited, so it is wise to file your tax returns and keep copies of cancelled checks that prove that you paid your taxes on time. The IRS has up to three years from your filing date to audit your return if it suspects good-faith errors and you have up to three years if you decide to file an amended return to claim a refund. If the IRS suspects that you underreported your gross income by 25 percent or more, they have up to six years to challenge your return. There is no time limit if you failed to file your return or filed a fraudulent return. FROM STAFF REPORTS LOS ANGELES - U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at Los Angeles International Airport Tom Bradley Internat ional Terminal discovered and seized ropes and cords saturated in cocaine. The gross weights of the cocaine saturated ropes and cords attached to backpacks were 8.49 pounds and 12.67 pounds, respectively. On March 15, CBP officers referred two male U.S. citizen airline passengers ages 20 and 21 years old arriving from Panama City, Panama for further inspection. During inspection of their luggage, officers found approximately 7 ropes and approximately 40 canvas backpacks with attached cords. All of the ropes and backpacks were individually packaged and appeared to be commercially packed. Both passengers claimed that they had purchased the items at a swap meet in Panama. One passenger claimed that he was bringing the ropes for his personal use to tie up his fishing boat. The canvas backpacks with attached cords belonged to the other passenger and appeared commercial for re-sale because of the quantity. CBP officers, however, detected that the ropes and backpacks’ black cords were stiff and had irregular tension. The ropes also emitted a chemical odor. Therefore, CBP Officers tested fibers from the ropes and cords for narcotics which resulted positive for cocaine. “This is another prime example of our astute CBP officers continuous discovery of clever concealment methods”, said Acting Director of Los Angeles Field Office Carlos Martel. The passengers and narcotics were turned over to agents with U.S. Immigration and Customs continued from page 2 Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). Marian Wright Edelman Child Watch Column Poor Children: Stranded at Sea

BY MARIAN WRIGHT EDELMAN As Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Julia Cass prepared the recent Children’s Defense Fund’s report “Held Captive”: Child Poverty in America, she traveled to the Mississippi Delta, the ravaged cities of New Orleans and Baton Rouge in Louisiana, and the birthplace of the suburban American dream in Long Island, New York to see several different sides of contemporary American child poverty. Despite the different circumstances children in these diverse communities faced, Cass found that there was something very Marian Wright Edelman familiar about the effects of child poverty everywhere she looked. The report’s title came from 13-year-old Audrey, who Cass met in rural Lambert, Mississippi. Cass heard Audrey say something “that captures the feeling of poverty that only those caught in it know and that could have been said by most all the children I met while researching this report. I remarked that Audrey seemed isolated in this decaying town where 34.5 percent of households live in poverty. ‘Yeah,’ she said, ‘Isolated. Remote island. Held captive.’” For Cass, Audrey’s words summed up a particular truth about poor children’s lives. Cass found that most of the young children she talked to wished most for “ordinary things or experiences that most children who are not poor take for granted. Jillian, 8, who lives with her parents and brother in a single motel room in Hempstead, N.Y., described the bedroom she wants—real big, purple, with a pink princess bed and purple and white shelves for Barbie dolls. Jason, 9, has lived in 11 places in his short life and now stays in a homeless shelter in New Orleans. He wishes he could be ‘in an actual house with my own room and closet and stuff’ and be on a swimming team and go to the beach and surf.” But being “held captive” on the “remote island” of poverty, as Audrey describes it, puts even what may seem like ordinary childhood experiences impossibly out of reach. As Cass says: “For poor children... poverty means more than money. For them, it can be a life sentence of exile from the larger society... Poor children and children who are not poor live in utterly different worlds.” Cass continues: “All parents, no matter how much money they have, need all the help they can get to raise happy, productive children, but parents who are not poor have more time and money to invest in them. They raise their children in decent, safe neighborhoods, send them to good schools, take them on trips, buy them books, bicycles and computers, get them counseling or tutoring if they need it, and music, or art lessons if they want them. They read to them and become involved in their school and other activities. They do this because they know it makes a difference, and even in tough economic times, they struggle to offer extras to their children. Think of it this way: Children who are not poor live on land. They can see the horizon and make choices and plans as they move forward into the future. They have opportunities, experiences and supports unknown by poor children. They are on the playing field.” But, Cass says, “Poor children swim in a sea of poverty. It is all they know. They go to inferior schools and day care centers where everyone around them is poor. They live in poor, rundown, unsafe neighborhoods. Compared to other children, they are exposed to more family turmoil, violence, instability and chaotic households. They are read to infrequently by their under-educated parents, watch more TV, and have less access to books and computers. Their parents and almost everyone they know are poor and struggling. They lack nutritious food. They receive less social support. Most cannot see land no matter how hard they paddle. They give up and tread water. Too often, they flounder... Even a poor child who makes it onto land is not equally poised to be successful because the playing field is not even. Worse, many are left behind in the sea of poverty, never making it onto land at all.” Cass sums up her metaphor this way: “The banking system, auto industry and other businesses considered ‘too big to fail’ are being rescued and subsidized. Children are small, and they are being allowed to fail. America is allowing children like Audrey to flop around in the sea of poverty. Over the past 40 years, America has added a patch here and there to the safety net, but has never made a serious, comprehensive, sustained effort to bring children out of the captivity of poverty even though the well-being of children is at least as important to the future as the health of banks and major industries—and vital to the American ideal of equal opportunity for all.” Like the child’s drawing of a small figure in a boat in CDF’s logo, we are leaving millions of poor children stranded on remote islands or drifting alone on a big sea.

Riverside County Potato Baron Indicted for Laundering Tens-ofThousands of Dollars in Campaign Funds From Staff Reports

RIVERSIDE - One of the nation's largest potato growers has been indicted by a Riverside County Criminal Grand Jury on charges of laundering campaign contributions in violation of state law. James Larry Minor, 70, of San Jacinto in Riverside County, is scheduled to be arraigned tomorrow morning at 10 in Department 52 of Riverside County Superior Court. The indictment charges him with conspiracy to violate the state Political Reform Act by donating money in the name of another, committing perjury, and filing a false document. Minor is owner of Agri-Empire Corp. in San Jacinto, which ships millions of potatoes destined for fast food restaurants and family kitchens to supermarkets and brokers across the nation. Its predecessor, San Jacinto Packing James Larry Minor Company, was founded by the Minor family in 1943 with an $800 loan. Minor is accused of illegally donating nearly $40,000 in the names of family members (including his sons, daughter, son-in-law and daughters-in-law), friends, and business associates to the Jeff Stone for State Senate Campaign in 2009. The practice is known as money laundering because it is designed to hide the true source of campaign donations and allows an individual to exceed the legal limits for donating to a state political campaign. The limit was $3,900 in 2009. Minor is also accused of perjury and filing a false statement in connection with his donations to the Committee to Elect Brenda Salas for State Assembly Campaign in 2006. The limit that year was $3,300, and Minor contributed a total of $26,400 in the names of others. Minor illegally filed a major donor statement with the Fair Political Practices Commission under penalty of perjury that failed to list any of those donations to Salas. Minor faces a maximum sentence of four years and eight months in state prison, and a fine of $60,000 imposed by the FPPC. The indictment, issued by the grand jury in December, will be unsealed at tomorrow's court hearing. The money laundering investigation was conducted by the Attorney General's Bureau of Investigation and Intelligence. It was presented to the grand jury by Deputy Attorney General Alana Cohen Butler of the criminal division.

Mrs. Grace Banks Sullivan Passes Away

From Staff Reports PHOENIX - Mrs. Grace Banks Sullivan, IFESH Board Member, passed away peacefully on March 15, 2011 at Scottsdale Healthcare Hospital, Arizona. Mrs. Sullivan was married to IFESH Founder, the late Reverend Leon H. Sullivan for 56 years, during which time she was a full partner in both his domestic and international work. When President Jimmy Carter came to speak at Reverend Sullivan’s church, he was so impressed with Mrs. Sullivan, that he called her “Amazing Grace.” Reverend Sullivan wrote about Mrs. Sullivan in his Book Moving Mountains: “My wife “Amazing Grace” whom I could never credit or thank enough shared my vision and my struggles, walking with me every step of the way. As a mother, wife and helper, she has no equal… For all important things achieved in this world, there are those who pay a special price, and this is true for Grace Sullivan. No one will ever know the sacrifices she made in standing by me and helping me with all the things I have attempted to do. As I zigzagged across America and the world it was Grace who maintained a home, cared for our children, and in untold ways made it possible for me to Mrs. Grace Banks Sullivan continue on… Neither I nor the world will ever be able to repay the debt that we owe to Grace Sullivan. Without her, the things we were able to achieve would never have been done.” Born in Maryland in 1924, Mrs. Sullivan graduated from Beaver College with a B.A. in Government and History and an M.A. in Education and Leadership. She founded and developed the Philadelphia Miniversity, a program for adults, which required no educational prerequisites. Mrs. Sullivan also served on the boards of the Public Broadcast System, the William Penn Foundation and the International Foundation for Education and Self-Help (IFESH). Mrs. Sullivan is survived by her children, Julie, Hope and Howard. She is also survived by seven grandchildren; Charlie, Leon, Chelsea, Elisabeth, Grace, Matthew and Saige. Condolences may be sent to IFESH, 5040 East Shea Boulevard, Suite 260, Scottsdale, Arizona 85254 or by e-mail to information@ifeshorg. Note to Editors: The mission of IFESH is to support African nations in their efforts to eradicate poverty, disease and inequity through self-help partnership programs. IFESH was founded in 1981 by the Reverend Leon H. Sullivan (1922 – 2001), former Board Member of General Motors, author of the Sullivan Principles and recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President George H.W. Bush and the Eleanor Roosevelt award from President Bill Clinton.

3+ Minutes with the Bible DON'T TELL HIM A THING by Richard Love Many years ago the writer's father, then a city missionary, received a telephone call from a prominent liberal clergyman. "Peter," said the clergyman, "I've got a young man here in the outer office who seems to be in great distress. He says he feels he's so great a sinner that he's overstepped the line and God won't forgive him. Now you've had a lot of experience with such people. What shall I tell him?" The clergyman didn't even know how to help a troubled soul. "Don't tell him a thing; I'll be right over ," said dad, and he left immediately to deal with the young man himself. Dad knew very well what was the matter with this young lad. The Holy Spirit had convicted him of his sin (John 16:8). The lad had come to see himself as he really was -- as God saw him, and sees any unsaved person, no matter how religious. No person ever comes to see his need of a Savior until he has first come to see himself as a condemned sinner before God. And it is only when we come to see ourselves as we are in the sight of a holy God that there is hope of salvation. The self-righteous do not see their need of a Savior. What would He save them from? What have they done that is so wrong? This is the way their reasoning goes. It is only when we begin to appreciate the holiness and righteousness of God that it dawns upon us that our condition is hopeless without a Savior. Strange, is it not, that so many people have pictures hanging on their walls of our Lord crowned with thorns or hanging on a cross, yet do not really know Him as a Savior, their own Savior. But when we have been convicted of our sin and our hopeless condition before God, we are ready to take in the words spoken by Paul to the trembling jailor at Philippi: "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved" (Acts 16:31).

Don't Let Insurance Agents Fly Away

BY JANET TRAUTWEIN Proponents of the new health care law claim to have seen the future of American health care -- and they say it's a lot like air travel. According to some, come January 2014 choosing a health insurance plan in the new exchanges will be as easy as shopping on Orbitz. By cutting insurance agents from the transaction and forcing consumers and employers to buy policies direct, advocates claim that the exchanges will trim costs. Of course, these folks seem to overlook that selecting a health insurance policy is a tad more complicated than buying a plane ticket. Many consumers rely on agents and brokers to help them make informed insurance choices and take advantage of cost saving opportunities -- and should be allowed to consult with them if they so choose. Most of the products that consumers buy online are simple commodities. For instance, to buy a plane ticket through a web portal, all a traveler needs to know is where he's from, where's he going, and when he'd like to leave. The amount of legroom, the quality of the food, and the reputation of the airline may factor into his decision, but most folks are just looking for the lowest possible fare. Why Eddie Long isn't out of the woods yet BY RONDA RACHA PENRICE ATLANTA, GA - February was an active month for Bishop Eddie Long. Not only did he enter into mediation with the four men -- Maurice Robinson, Jamal Parris, Anthony Flagg and Spencer LeGrande -- who accused him of sexual misconduct when they were consenting young adults, he announced three Monday prayer sessions for a "men-only" prayer group via YouTube that kicked off February 28. All of this occurred just before the recent announcement, as reported by WAGA-FOX 5 Atlanta, that New Birth was cutting staff pay and shortening the workweek. On January 31, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC) reported on a YouTube plea from Long demanding settlement for his New Birth Missionary Baptist Church parishioners who invested with the firm City Capital Corporation in 2010 after the then-CEO Ephren Taylor was given a platform to address interested members. As of today, that video has been removed. Bishop Eddie Long Just when the beleaguered pastor had employed a strategy of silence that appeared to work for him, he appears to be returning to his the YouTube message since he claimed that Elder Maurice old, boastful self. With all the communication tools avail- Waddell of New Birth had participated in conference calls able to him and his staff, why YouTube? Who would advise regarding the matter. According to Taylor, as evidence of his good faith, he him to once again don his expensively tailored clothing and speak outside of the congregation not even a good six months had worked along with his former company City Capital since the accusations were made? Is Long that in need of Corporation to work out a settlement with the New Birth attention? Given all of his woes, would it not be wiser to just members who invested with the company. Making matters even worse is the call for “Men Only” wait it out? In January, when the local ABC news affiliate, worship. Isn’t that sort of action what got Long in hot water WSB Channel 2, caught him at a Trumpet Awards event for an interview, Long appeared humbled and even donned an in the first place? What credibility does Long have to tell outfit that was considerably more subdued. Apparently, Long has not responded with offering worthy of the Lord. So you’re bringing an offering, any admission of guilt although each of the young men we’re praying, and God specifically said pray for this nation have described his wrongdoing in emotional and graphic in such a time as this”? Interestingly, in that message, Long mentions an offerdetail. According to Andrea Doneff, an associate professor at Atlanta's John Marshall Law School whom the AJC quoted ing, which makes his call appear even more disingenuous. in its February 11, 2011 story on the mediation, Long's Given the report of hard financial times, with churches and unresponsiveness is not uncommon. "When she practiced nonprofits experiencing as much as a 40 percent drop in law," according to the AJC, "she often advised her clients revenue, according to the FOX 5 story, Long’s plea reinforces the assertions by some that he is no more than one not to expect an admission of guilt." Doneff told the AJC that "the main reason people go to of a long line of preachers disguising a scheme to generate mediation is to maintain control over the outcome and to cash as God’s calling. Even before the accusations from the young men, Long find a resolution that meets everybody's needs as well as had attracted Senate attention regarding church finances possible." That's a far cry from the fight Long promised when an investigation led by Republican Senator Chuck when he addressed his congregation amid national media Grassley of Iowa included New Birth in a 2007 investigation cameras in late September. But instead of letting the private of six ministries that were permitted tax breaks. Grassley’s mediation pass quietly, Long brings additional attention to himself by starring in YouTube videos. salespeople. They can assist their customers by helping them appeal denied claims and correct administrative errors. For small businesses, outside brokers frequently serve as virtual human resources departments, providing administrative savings by assisting in compliance, completing enrollment forms, answering questions about benefits, and ensuring that enrollees have the documentation they need to access medical care. According to the nonpartisan Center for Studying Health System Change, at least half of all small firms in the United States obtain their health benefits through a broker or agent. These companies appreciate the services brokers provide. A survey commissioned by IBM found that three-quarters of small-business owners were very satisfied with their agents' work. The health reform law claims to offer some help to confused consumers by establishing so-called "navigators" to conduct public education activities, distribute information about enrollment and premium credits, and provide enrollment assistance. Unfortunately, the law does not specify what training or certification navigators must receive to advise customers -- unlike professional agents who are state-licensed and accountable. Consumers may thus be at risk of encountering sham operators who could give them faulty advice or information. By empowering consumers with useful information, brokers make the health care marketplace more -- not less -- efficient. Janet Trautwein is CEO of the National Association of Health Underwriters.

Atlanta pastor under 'review' for possible crimes against children

BY JON SHIREK DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -- A DeKalb County pastor is the focus of prosecutors trying to find out if he was involved in any crimes against children. On Tuesday, the DeKalb County District Attorney's Office officially began looking into Bishop Johnathan Alvarado, senior pastor and founder -- nearly 20 years ago -- of Total Grace Christian Bishop Johnathan Alvarado Center, on Covington Highway. According to the county's Online Judicial System, it's a "crimes against children review," with Bishop Alvarado listed as "defendant." "I was contacted by the D.A.'s office on Monday," said Shaun King, who used to be one of the church's pastors. King heard from the D.A.'s office after he began blogging and tweeting warnings to church members and others about the allegations against Bishop Alvarado. King said he found out about them only last week, then talked with others from the church who he says are familiar with the accusations -- of sexual misconduct against children. "It appears that [prosecutors] were already aware of some of the facts of the case" when they called, King said. "And they saw some of the tweets that I wrote about it. And they just wanted me to know that they were already looking into it and investigating the facts." King said he served as a pastor at the church for about seven years, then left in 2007 and, with his wife Rai, started "Courageous Church" which meets in midtown Atlanta. "I know the families, and so that's really what just kind of hit me like a ton of bricks" when he heard, King said, adding that the allegations have all been kept quiet and, he said, that's wrong. "In our city, when a pastor commits a crime against children, people need to know." Bishop Alvarado has not been arrested or charged with any crime. As of Wednesday night he had not returned messages from 11Alive News seeking comment about how he is addressing the information in the blogs and tweets that King and his wife have written about him, and about the D.A.'s "review" of him. D.A. Spokesman Erik Burton would not say how far the review might go and if it might become a full-blown investigation. His only comment: "We are aware of the allegations involving Johnathan Alvarado, and are looking into the matters."

“The world is going to hell in a handbasket”

ALL MONEY AIN’T GOOD MONEY BY JOE HOPKINS A March 7, 2011 article in the New York Times entitled, “Mexican Church Takes a Closer Look at Donors”, says, “The Church is grappling with its role as thousands die in turf wars among rich and sometimes generous criminals.” I guess the question is whether it is okay for the church to knowingly take money from criminal enterprises such as gang and drug wars that counts as its fallout the deaths of thousands of people? The same question, I suppose, could be raised about the African American community allowing rappers who get paid to publicly to call Blacks the N-word and publicly sanction them getting paid for calling Black Women B’s and W’s. Making movies like, “Its hard being a pimp” and songs that glorify gangsterism has made a nobody that calls himself 50 Cent and a former drug dealer named Russell Simmons millionaires Now these guys are on the covers of main stream magazines and the cover of Black Enterprise and other Black image making magazines. I guess some people say that is okay. To me it’s like glorifying the guy that rapes your daughter because he gives you some money. Instead of isolating and demonizing these guys, society glorifies them, making it harder for parents to control the behavior of their children. A few years ago when a white radio personality made some racially insensitive com-

Celebs Who Have Battled Addiction FROM ENTERTAINMENT STAFF REPORTS Despite Charlie Sheen’s recent assertions, addiction is not a battle that’s defined by winning and losing. It is, unfortunately, one that hits close to home for many celebrities, who constantly face judgment and rejection from the public while living in a private world of entitlement, where extreme behavior is encouraged or ignored. Though repeated arrests, trips to rehab and headlinemaking antics seem like a trend of the moment, the issues driving such behavior have been a longtime problem for celebrities. Here are some boomer women who have gone public with their addiction battles: Whitney Houston - Drug addiction is responsible for Houston’s metamorphosis from a national treasure to a national punch line. Her career -- and reputation -- began spiraling out of control after she was arrested for marijuana possession in 2000. Over the past ten years, Houston, 47, has occasionally sought treatment, reportedly dealing with addictions to marijuana, cocaine and assorted pills. She explained, "I too found painkillers after a routine cosmetic surgical procedure and I too became addicted. The m o r p h i n e becomes the warm bath from which to escape painful reality. I was a lucky one. I was able to see that the pain had started long ago and far away, and that finding the narcotic was merely a matter of time." Curtis didn't disclose a timeline of her addiction, or how she eventually quit, but says she's now proud to be clean. She wrote on The Huffington Post, "My recovery from drug addiction is the single greatest accomplishment of my life. But it takes work – hard, painful work." Moore said that she eventually sought treatment at the Betty Ford Center, and hopes that her honesty will help others who deal with the same issues. "Being able to come out and talk honestly about that (alcoholism) gave a lot of people the opportunity to look at themselves carefully and say, 'Hey, yes I look good, my clothes are nice and I'm warm and delightful, but I'm also an alcoholic,'" she said. And it became too much, so I did something about it.” In 2009, she became a celebrity spokesperson for Alli diet pills, an over the counter weight loss drug. Judd said that she's taking the weight loss slow, exercising regularly and trying not to feel pressured to attain an "ideal" figure.

Some of the Accused rapists LBT NEWS SERVICES CLEVELAND, Texas – A meeting last Thursday night that was billed as a way to discuss concerns some have about the investigation into a series of alleged sexual assaults on an 11-year-old girl turned into a forum that many used to blame the girl police contend is the victim of heinous attacks. Many who attended the meeting said they supported the group of men and boys who have been charged in the case. Supporters didn't claim that the men and boys did not have sex with the young girl; instead they blamed the girl for the way she dressed or claimed she must have lied about her age – accusations that have drawn strong responses from those who note an 11-year-old cannot consent to sex and that it doesn't matter how she was dressed. Other people in this small town about 40 miles northeast of Houston said earlier this week they were outraged by the attacks. The age of consent in Texas is 17 and ignorance of a girl's age is not a legal defense. "She's 11 years old. It shouldn't have happened. That's a child,'' Oscar Carter, 56, who is related to an uncle of one 16-year-old charged in the case, said in an interview earlier in the week. "Somebody should have said what we are doing is wrong.'' Police say the girl was sexually assaulted during several attacks last year. Authorities have arrested 18 people, including two of Cleveland's star high school athletes and adults with criminal records. They face assault and abuse charges. Authorities began investigating in December after a friend of the girl told a teacher he had seen a lurid cell phone video that showed the girl being raped. Police investigators determined it was recorded inside an abandoned mobile home on the city's northern outskirts. The girl told investigators she was raped on Nov. 28, first at a house near the mobile home and then at the trailer. Indictments in the case allege that before the Nov. 28 attack, the girl also was assaulted on Sept. 15 and Oct. 25. Each of those times, at least two individuals were involved. Thursday's meeting was led by Quanell X, an activist prominent in Houston's Black community. He told the audience of more than 130 people who had packed a small community center that the gathering's goal was not to

Assemblywoman Lowenthal's Homeless Rights Bill Advances

FROM STAFF REPORTS An Assembly bill granting homeless people the right to invoke hate-crimes protection when suing an assailant in civil court received approval from the Assembly Judiciary Committee. AB 312 was authored by Assemblywoman Bonnie Lowenthal, D-Long Beach, as a replacement for an earlier homeless rights bill she wrote that former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed. “Tragically, California has the highest rate of violence against homeless people in the country,” Lowenthal told the committee. “AB 312 raises the stakes without adding additional strain to our law enforcement or our corrections systems.” Should the bill become law, it would be enforced exclusively by lawsuit, according to information provided by one of Lowenthal's staffers. It would add homelessAssemblywoman ness to a list of characteristics or circumstances that Bonnie Lowenthal qualify for enhanced civil judgments in cases in which a person is attacked because of that characteristic. “It forces the bullies and thugs to pay the cost of keeping themselves in check,” Lowenthal continued in her speech before the committee. She also highlighted the fact that her bill does not require funding, a scarcity these days as the state continues to attempt to whittle away a roughly $26 billion deficit. Community organizer John Kraintz, who used to be homeless, spoke in support of the bill. “Homeless people are being used for target practice," he told lawmakers. Paula Lomazzi, director of the Sacramento Homeless Organizing Committee, said the bill would “send a strong message that violence against homeless people is unacceptable in our society.”

THE UNITED NATIONS AND PEOPLE OF AFRICAN DESCENT BY DR. WORRILL, NATIONAL CHAIRMAN EMERITUS, NATIONAL BLACK UNITED FRONT We must regain the momentum which the Reparations Movement had in the first few years of this century. The United Nations World Conference Against Racism in Durban, South Africa recognized the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade and Slavery as a Crime Against Humanity for which Reparations are due! The U. N. has declared 2011, the “Year for People of African Descent.” There are different activities being planned. As Malcolm X taught us, we must use the international arena to highlight our National Human Rights’ Demand for Reparations! Let us review the work of the December 12th Movement and NBUF leading up to the World Conference Against Racism. In 1999, the National Black United Front (NBUF) joined forces with the December 12th Movement in organizing a delegation of Africans in America to attend the United Nations World Conference Against Racism. The conference was held in Durban, South Africa from August 31st to September 7, 2001. We should never forget the impact and significance of this organizing project.

Five Simple Steps to Cut Down On Gas Costs BY JOHN FELMY Gas prices are rising across the country -- and the primary reason is the cost of making fuel. While both supply and demand for gasoline have risen in the United States, the worldwide demand for crude oil is up and the supply of crude oil is down. Middle East turmoil and loss of supply have further tightened markets. The increased crude oil costs and higher mandates for ethanol have made gasoline more expensive to make. Fortunately, there are some simple steps that you can take to offset higher gas prices and keep more money in your wallet. Here are five of them: 1. Drive slower. Driving at high speeds makes your engine run at more revolutions per minute -- and consume more fuel. And when your car is traveling faster, it's also facing greater air resistance, which requires the engine to work harder. So don't floor the accelerator unless it's an emergency. Driving 55 miles per hour instead of 65 miles per hour can improve your car's fuel economy by about 2 miles per gallon. 2. Avoid abrupt stops and starts. The herky-jerky trips most commuters are familiar with don't just give us headaches -- they also cost us fuel. Starting from a full stop is a particularly energy-intensive activity for an engine. And the extra gas each rev-up costs quickly adds up to a much bigger bill at the pump. So try to make your car rides as smooth as possible. Use back roads to avoid lights and traffic jams. Keep an ample distance between you and the car in front of you to avoid unnecessary braking and accelerating. When approaching a red light, try to slow down gradually to avoid a full stop before speeding back up again. And when you're at a full stop, don't gun it after the light turns green -- gradual starts can use up to 40 percent less gas than abrupt ones. 3. Don't overuse your air conditioner. John Felmy A vehicle's air conditioner works by compressing a cooling agent. That process requires energy. And in a car, that source of energy is the fuel in your tank. On a blistering summer day, of course, it's fine to turn on the air conditioner. But once you've cooled down, don't keep the inside of your car at refrigerator-low temperatures. Overusing the air conditioner can reduce a car's fuel economy by up to two miles per gallon. When it's a nice day, roll down the windows. And make a point to park in the shade. 4. Plan your trips in advance. Taking a series of short trips instead of a single long one can put many extra miles on an engine. Plan ahead to combine errands and cut down on short trips. Pick the kids up from school, buy groceries, and drop a package off at the post office in one trip instead of three. And consider carpooling. When you share a ride you aren't just splitting gas costs -- you're also cutting down on expenses like insurance and taxes and helping the environment. 5. Maintain your car. Too many American drivers don't get their vehicle the regular tune-ups it requires. Properly maintaining your car can dramatically cut down on gas consumption and save you money. For example, properly inflated tires can improve fuel efficiency by up to 3 percent. When tires start losing pressure, the engine has a tougher time pushing the car forward -- and thus consumes more gas. The average vehicle on the road right now has its tires under-inflated by over 7 percent, which can cause about a 3 percent loss in fuel economy. Removing excess weight in the cabin or trunk of the vehicle will also improve fuel efficiency. Simply removing this load can reduce fuel consumption and help to lower emissions. Gas prices could continue to rise over the next few months. But even if they don't, these five simple steps will help you reduce your fuel consumption -- and conserve your cash. John Felmy is the chief economist at the American Petroleum Institute.

The December 12th Movement International Secretariat, the International Association Against Torture, North South XXI has official Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) status with the United Nations. Over the last twenty years, this group has committed much of its organizing efforts to participating in the United Nations Human Rights Commission by presenting numerous issues that impact African people in America. They have been NBUF’s eyes and ears at the U.N. As Atty. Roger Wareham of the December 12th Movement recently revealed in an article circulated on the internet, “Since 1997, when the U.N. agreed to hold this World Conference, the United States, Canada, and Western Europe (the WEO Group of countries) have done all they can to prevent it from succeeding.” In the spring of 1998, at the African Group meeting during the Commission on Human Rights in Geneva, a Resolution was drafted identifying the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade as a Crime Against Humanity. The United States used all of its influence and blocked the resolution. However, this did not stop the momentum throughout the African World to pursue this resolution’s becoming an official position of the United Nations World Conference Against Racism. At the African Regional Preparatory Conference, for the World Conference Against Racism, held in Dakar, Senegal (January 22-24, 2001), the African Ministers developed what has been called the “Dakar Declaration.” In their deliberations, they affirmed, in part, the following: · Affirm that the slave trade is a unique tragedy in the history of humanity, particularly against Africans— a crime against humanity which is unparalleled, not only in its abhorrent barbaric feature, but also, in terms of its enormous magnitude, its institutionalized nature, its transnational dimension and especially its negation of the human nature of the victims. · Further affirm that the consequences of this tragedy accentuated by those of colonialism and apartheid, have resulted in substantial and lasting economic, political, and cultural damage caused to the descendants of the victims, the perpetuation of the prejudice against Africans on the continent and people of African descent in the Diaspora. · Strongly reaffirm that States which pursued racist policies or acts of racial discrimination, such as slavery, colonialism, and apartheid, should assume their full responsisee PEOPLE OF AFRICAN DESCENT page 11

bilities and provide adequate reparations to those States, communities and individuals who were victims of such racist policies or acts, regardless of when or by whom they were committed. International law supports the position that the enslavement of Africans was a crime against humanity. The Charter of the Nuremberg Tribunal defined crimes against humanity in this manner: “Murder, extermination, enslavement, deportation, and other inhumane acts committed against any civilian population… whether or not in violation of the domestic law of the country where perpetuated.” The African Reparations Movement explains that, “Historians and their experts can show, without difficulty, how the invasion of African territories, the mass capture of Africans, the horrors of the middle passage, the chattelization of Africans in America, and the extermination of the language and culture of the transported Africans, constituted violations of all these international laws.” Thus, the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade was a Crime Against Humanity and, it is clear, African people are owed reparations throughout the world.

REFLECTIONS ON LIFE

OUR LIFE IS THE STRONGEST MEDITATION By Father Jerome LeDoux Within ten minutes of my setting foot in the rectory after a journey to New Orleans for the celebration of Drex Brumfield’s homegoing, a chaplain from Vitas Hospice of Baylor/All Saints Hospital in Fort Worth called to inform me that Our Mother of Mercy church member Lucille Willams had died two hours before. Although I had anointed her twice, the family requested that I come and pray with them. By the time I got myself together and made it to the hospital, Lucille’s daughter and sisters had left. Reverently, I thanked and praised God for Lucille’s beautiful life. Weeks later, on the road again for my cousin Sam Cooper, Jr.’s funeral, I rolled toward New Iberia, Louisiana near the heart of Acadiana. Sam’s mother Gladys was a Narcisse related Father Jerome LeDoux on my mother’s side of the family. Petrie and Narcisse are so synonymous that my mother’s father, Nathaniel Petrie, has Narcisse Narcisse on his birth certificate. Two days before, at our Sunday Gospel Mass at OMM, our choir had sung “The Storm Is Passing Over” for the meditation. It haunted me then and did not let up. “Take courage, my soul, and let us journey on, “though the night is dark and I’m still far from home; “Praise be to God, the morning light appears. Corus: “The storm is passing over, “the storm is passing over, “the storm is passing over, Halleluia!” “The Storm Is Passing Over” is so reminiscent of John Cardinal Newman’s poignant poem/prayer that it verges on plagiarism. Newman, an Anglican priest and a very literate man, prayed as he strained and studied whether he should follow the road to Catholicism: “Lead, kindly Light, amid the encircling gloom, “Lead Thou me on! “The night is dark, and I am far from home — “Lead Thou me on! “Keep Thou my feet; I do not ask to see “The distant scene—one step enough for me.” As I journeyed down the highway, never ceasing to give thanks for the wonder of automotive technology that enables us to drive fluidly, powerfully and swiftly across so many miles, I had a sense of the darkness of Cardinal Newman on his journey. The lyrics and melody of “The Storm Is Passing Over” kept coursing through my mind as the miles fell behind me. What is meditation? During my time of novitiate, two years of spiritual formation, I found it annoying that meditation consisted of one, two or three points/subjects, though, admittedly, these were only training wheels in learning. Meditation, of course, need not have any point or subject, nor does it have to involve words. Indeed, the strongest meditation may consist of quiet mood or fascination with the thought of God, good people or life’s joys, sorrows, sickness, trials or death. The storms of life are a metaphor comprising all these things as they impact each day of our lives. “The Storm Is Passing Over” was the meditation gripping my mind and attention as I made my pilgrimage to New Iberia. It became a mood, a state of mind, a spiritual attitude that blocked out most other things. Yes, it was melancholy, but a sweet melancholy that assured me, as it did Cardinal Newman, that, ultimately, it would be well with my soul. Monsignor Ronald Broussard, the pastor of St. Edward Church, celebrated the Mass of Resurrection and gave the homily. Before the final blessing, I addressed my dear cousins, exhorting them that we must stop meeting like this. “Lawrence Narcisse Petrie Sweet is here! He is spearheading a Petrie/Narcisse family reunion for August. Be there! “We are saying good-bye to our dear brother Sam Cooper, Jr.,” I continued. “But, even though the original, uncontracted meaning of good-bye is ‘God be with you,’ we say to Sam, ‘Au revoir,’ ‘Till we meet again,’ for we shall join him some day in our Father’s kingdom! ‘Au revoir, Sam! Hasta la vista! Arrivederci! Auf Wiedersehen!’” Sitting astride famous Bayou Teche and adjacent to even more renowned Avery Island, historic New Iberia is an attractive environment for a family to establish itself and share the challenges and joys of growing together and celebrating the blessings of life. The storm is passing over. Sam left behind his brother Darrel, his sister Sheila, his wife Bettye, two daughters, Bethany and Kristie, a son, Sam III, and three grandchildren. It was encouraging to hear the general sentiment among the relatives that they would be attending the upcoming family reunion in Lake Charles. The storm is passing over. Even as the storm is passing over, hopeful but wary human beings revel in their brief moments of joy at various times of the year. Especially then, Mardi Gras was in huge focus in Rio de Janeiro, New Orleans, Mobile, Lafayette and venues around the globe. All the while, the shadow of the cross is ever near, for this is the same Rio de Janeiro where recent irrepressible mudslides buried alive 903 unsuspecting people in the homes they thought were a refuge from the fury of nature. Many unfortunates are still missing. “The Storm Is Passing Over” is a paradigm of our entire life that is a potpourri of all the Narcisses, the folks of Rio de Janeiro, of New Orleans and all of us, sharing our joys and sorrows, and orienting them toward our eternal reunion in our Father’s kingdom. -"God is love, and all who abide in love abide in God and God in them." (1 John 4:16)

2010-2011 Basketball Year in Review BY WILFRED PHILLIPS The 2010-2011 boys and girls CIF basketball season was a very exciting one. The Long Beach Poly High boys and girls basketball squads were the most feared basketball high school around the country, outside the conference, and in the Moore League. We once again Wilfred Phillips saw the second emergence of the Compton Tarbabes. The excellent coaching by Coach, Tony Thomas, and the establishment of team discipline by him and his assistants, helped lead this team to finish the season in second place in the Moore Conference. Even though the Tarbabes were without the high scoring Anthony January, experienced team leader Allen Guei, and his teammates helped pave the way for the Tarbabes to go deep in the Southern Section Division 2-AA play-offs. They where defeated on the road by Clovis High of Fresno. Hats off to Poly head coach Sharrieff Metoyer, for his motivation and experience to see the boy’s Jackrabbit team who were rated tops in the state polls, win the Div: 1AA CIF Southern Section Championship in Anaheim. The Jackrabbits played a tough schedule throughout the entire season knocking off basketball powerhouses such as Etiwanda, and Centennial of Corona. During the regular season the Jackrabbits paired up with Bishop Gorman, of (Las Vegas) in a nationally televised game in February, which ended with their only loss of the season. The magnificent season came to a screeching halt when they met the waiting Mater Dei Monarchs, who sent the high flying Jackrabbits packing on a cold Saturday evening at Long Beach City College. The Long Beach Times Sports, salutes the Jackrabbits seniors Alexis Moore, (USC) Chris Camper, Alex Carmon, Earnest Pettway, and State Player of the Year, Ryan Anderson, (Boston College). You have continued the LB Poly High School tradition of the well earned nickname, {School of Champions}. Turning over to the girl’s basketball program. The LB Poly Lady Jackrabbits under the superb coaching of Carl Buggs, and his staff were also the talk around the entire CIF. They were the favorite to win the girls division 1AA state championship in Sacramento. The Lady Jackrabbits were defeated in the third round of the playoffs in a shocking upset at home by Santa Monica, they lost in the remaining seconds by one point. This ends the 2010-2011 boys and girls CIF basketball season for the Moore League. It was a year full of many ups and downs, dashed hopes and dreams, along with high pitched basketball excitement. Let’s hope that next season will be just as exciting as this year. Many thanks to all the students, families, and basketball fans who came out to support our youth through C.I.F. Sports.

The Black Surname Controversy: Is It Washington, Williams or Johnson? The Afro American Article May Have Been Misleading FROM STAFF REPORTS (Taylor Media Services) Recently, an article circulated throughout the Internet suggesting that “Washington” was “the blackest name in America.” This designation may have been a bit misleading. Actually, the most common African American surnames are “Williams” and “Johnson.” They are followed by Smith, Jones, Brown and Jackson. The surname Washington is only the 18th most common surname among American Blacks. The study cited last week by the Afro-American newspapers was able to declare Washington the “blackest” last name in America because of all the people in this country with the surname Washington over 90 percent of them are African Americans. Why are certain surnames especially common among American Blacks? No one knows for sure. The generally accepted theory is that slaves adopted or were given the last names of their plantation masters. This is not completely true. First of all, most slaves did not have last names. It was only after the Civil War ended slavery that the need for a last name started to become necessary. It is true that after 1865, many slaves did adopt the last name of their former owners. But this was not universal. Some adopted the last names of prominent historical figures. Others simply adopted a name which sounded pleasing like “Freeman.” Plus, we must remember that slaves were bought and sold and may have more than one owner and thus more than one last name from which to choose. As for the commonality of “Johnson,” there is reason to believe that several of the first Africans sold as slaves in America (Jamestown, Virginia) were sold to a plantation owner named Johnson. Thus, Johnson may have been among the first Black surnames. Meanwhile, if you desire to know where your surname ranks among the 700 most common Black last names email TaylorMediaServices@yahoo.com .

LONG BEACH POLICE DUI SATURATION PATROL PROVES EFFECTIVE LBT’S NEWSWIRE On Saturday, March 19, 2011, the Long Beach Police Department’s Traffic Enforcement Division conducted a DUI saturation patrol throughout Long Beach. This enforcement operated from 6:00 p.m. Saturday night until 2:00 a.m. Sunday morning. During the eight-hour operation, thirteen (13) additional police officers patrolled the city looking for impaired drivers. During the operation, the officers produced the following statistics: 2 DUI arrests 1 narcotics arrest 1 felony arrest 8 unlicensed/suspended license citations issued 6 vehicles impounded 88 miscellaneous traffic citations issued 41 parking citations issued DUI saturation patrols are a vital component in the fight against impaired drivers. Nationally, impaired driving caused by alcohol or drugs causes one death every 30 minutes, and one injury every two minutes. The average American has a 30 percent chance of being injured or killed by an impaired driver. Saturation patrols have been proven to reduce impaired driving related collisions by removing these drivers from our streets. Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Safety Administration. “When more people drive sober and safely, lives are saved. It’s just that simple,” said Christopher J. Murphy, Director of the Office of Traffic Safety. “This grant will help make Long Beach just that much safer of a place to work and live. For more information about the DUI saturation patrol, please contact Long Beach Police Department Traffic Enforcement Section Sergeant Aaron Alu at (562) 570-5737.

Radiation Monitors Continue to Confirm That No Radiation Levels of Concern Have Reached the United States FROM EPA SERVICES WASHINGTON – During a detailed analysis of four west coast RadNet air monitor filters, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) identified trace amounts of radioactive iodine, cesium, and tellurium consistent with the Japanese nuclear incident. These levels are consistent with the levels found by a Department of Energy monitor last week and are to be expected in the coming days. EPA’s samples were captured by three monitors in California and one in Washington State on Friday, March 18 and sent to EPA scientists for detailed laboratory analysis. The data was reviewed over the weekend and the analysis was completed Monday night. The radiation levels detected on the filters from California and Washington monitors are millions of times below levels of concern. In addition, last night preliminary monitor results in Hawaii detected minuscule levels of an isotope that is also consistent with the Japanese nuclear incident. This detection varies from background and historical data in Hawaii. This isotope was detected at our fixed monitor in Hawaii, and it is far below any level of concern for human health. The sampling filter from this monitor is being sent to our national radiation lab for further analysis. In a typical day, Americans receive doses of radiation from natural sources like rocks, bricks and the sun that are about 100,000 times higher than what we have detected coming
