#LBCongress19 DEAR ICES LONG BEACH 2019 ATTENDEES, It is my sincere pleasure to welcome you to the show! I am honored to serve as your host and am deeply excited for this year’s theme: Balance. We live in an age of extremes, a time where the beauty of true balance feels more like a whisper than an anthem. Instead of a commitment to sensible eating, diet fads invite individuals to cut out core food groups with wild abandon. In lieu of catching our favorite TV show during a mellow evening at home, we binge watch entire seasons of said show and then wonder why the weekend felt like a sleepless flash. Polarized ideologies have individuals un-friending their colleagues on social media rather than being open to the interface and ultimate learning that comes from sharing and processing diverse perspectives. The beauty industry, my friends, is no exception! Determining what and how much a brand should post online to gain valuable and viable optics in this ultra-competitive digital landscape is a profound challenge. Too much, and one risks overexposure; too little, and brand recognition may be severely compromised. Figuring out the precise conditions in which partnering with an influencer will positively affect return on investment poses equal confusion. When is it wise to sponsor content when is it prudent to ride the authentic wave of earned media? Additionally, the constant barrage of new launches in every category—from color to skin care and everything in between—can be challenging for even the most savvy consumer to metabolize, leaving many product enthusiasts with a quiet longing for trusted quality over sheer quantity. How can the beauty, skin care and wellness space, then, bring balance front and center? I believe that this golden quality is cultivated by careful and deliberate action rather than spontaneous reaction. Valuing your inherent credibility and expertise, taking pause before speaking (or typing!), becoming educated in social media to optimize success, not losing sight of what your key consumers really want, mindfully crafting a marketing strategy that’s not “one-sizefits-all,” focusing on fostering genuine relationships (with clients, customers, media and the public at large) and creating the next best product or service rather than simply the next product or service will collectively help the brands represented at ICES 2019 to achieve balance and thrive in one of the most dynamic and innovative industries in the world!
