YOUTH is Power

skincare’s youngest audience yet

For many years, people began their skincare journeys as teenagers, at the very earliest. Now, the demand for services and products is skewing younger and younger. In fact, according to a recent survey, tweens - those between ages 9 and 12 - account for 49 percent of industry growth. There are many benefits to catering to this younger demographic. Most notably, as more and more tweens start utilizing skincare, lifelong clients are being created. Here are my top tips for catering to the tween market.

1. Pay attention to the youngest members of your client pool. I’ve seen a rise in skincare interest from kids as young as 10 to 12. They’re beginning to notice changes in their skin and want to learn how to handle them. There isn’t a “too young” to start learning about skincare basics, but around 10 to 12 is ideal to start a more focused routine as they head into their teen years.

2. Learn the treatments they want. Tweens often go for fun treatments like basic facials or sessions that teach them about keeping their skin clean. They’re also keen on treatments for early acne if that’s starting to pop up. The like feeling pampered but also want to learn how to take care of their skin.

3. Identify their favorite products. They love products that are fun to use and look cool, but need to be educated on not using skincare that not right for them. Think gentle cleansers, light moisturizers, and cute lip balms. Products made with natural ingredients and seen as trendy are usually a hit.

4. Get their parents on board. Educating parents about the benefits of each service or product works wonders. Offering consultations where both the client and their parent can join helps everyone get on the same page. It’s all about making informed choices together.

5. Share your knowledge at their level.

Keep it fun and visual. I use simple explanations, fun comparisons, and hands-on demos to show them how to use products right. The key is to make it interactive and not just give out rules.

6. Adjust your marketing to find clients.

Use bright, catchy visuals and create content for platforms like Instagram or TikTok. Working with influencers they look up to or their peers can really grab their attention. Focus on promoting skin health rather than just beauty.

7. Know what to avoid.

Stay away from harsh treatments like chemical peels or products with strong ingredients like heavy acids or retinoids. These can be too much for their

sensitive skin. Always choose gentle, skin-friendly options.

8. Find the best ways to work with tweens.

Focus on teaching and being gentle. Make your space welcoming and fun, and always show respect. The goal is to teach them how to care for their skin properly, not just treat them once. As an esthetician, connecting with tweens means meeting them where they are, keeping things light and educational, and making sure their parents are comfortable and clued in every step of the way.

An Esty’s First Year Journey May

1. How do you know if a job you're considering is the right fit for you?

After working and training in certain salons, there are a lot of different aspects I consider when finding a job that is fit for me. First, I always make sure I can get along with everyone in the workspace. Second, ensure that you always have enough space to work with and that the space you are given is clean and hygienic. This is to ensure your client feels comfortable and you are comfortable working long hours. Lastly, find a place that allows you to work within your comfort zone. Some may try to get you to add on services that you may not feel comfortable performing or that we legally cannot perform. Never feel forced to accomplish something if you know you can’t or haven’t reached that certain skill set.

2. Would you recommend commission or hourly pay for an esthetician's first job?

It really depends. Some salons and spas pay hourly and for some, that

hourly rate may not be enough. However, I have seen that if you calculate the commission you would receive, it isn’t enough either. My recommendation is to give yourself options. Find spaces that would be a good fit for you and then calculate both the hourly and the commission rate to see which would work better for you.

3. Do you think it's better to work toward a specialty, like brows or lashes, rather than offer a full-service menu?

I think it truly depends on the person. I don’t think one option is inherently more successful because sometimes those who only work within their specialties make so much more than a full-service esthetician. If you are more skilled and efficient in a specialty like lashes, I would say focus more on that area of expertise and take advantage of it as much as you can. If you truly love doing all services and you are equally skilled in all aspects, work as a full-service esthetician.

4. Do esthetics schools offer help with job placement?

Most of them 100 percent do. My school actually calls me every once in a while, offering job fairs and positions. A lot of spas and practices work with these schools, so once someone graduates, they have a list of potential hires.

5. What direction do you see the esthetics industry moving in?

I think it depends on which part of the world you’re in. For example, there are different climates affecting skin type and there’s different beauty standards almost everywhere. But here in the United States, mainly Miami, we will make more advancements in anti-aging. Whether technological or chemical advancements, I’ve noticed, especially on social media, that anti-aging is becoming more and more popular.

6. If I'm interested in an esthetics career, what's a good way to gain more insight into the field?

Attend trade shows that showcase every aspect of esthetics! These are incredible learning and networking opportunities where you will make connections and get updated on the latest innovations in the field. There are two ICES shows left this year, Long Beach in August and Miami Beach in October. Don’t miss out!

While May 1 marks the beginning of Women’s Health Awareness Month, I always like to emphasize that, as women, prioritizing our mental and physical health and well-being should be a task that we make time for 365 days a year. I know better than anyone how bad health can drastically decimate your quality of life.

By December 2018, my life had hit rock bottom. What is your business called and where are you located?

Nine to Nourish by Janine, a holistic skincare haven, is located in historic Hatboro, Pennsylvania, nestled inside of the vintage Red Barn.

Can you give a little information about your background as an esthetician?

I became an esthetician in 2010 and getting to where I am now was not easy, but I believe it was divinely guided. Growing up I was intuitive and drawn to the world of beauty. My nana and mother instilled in me that wellness and taking care of yourself was an important part of both your inner and outer health. I grew up learning about the importance of selfcare at a very young age. Upon receiving my certification, I spent the majority of my career working for traditional spas and dermatology practices, providing treatments, offering consulting services, creating spa menus, training staff and product selection. I battled my fair share of health issues as a young adult that left me entirely broken down both physically and mentally. After a partial lobectomy and over a dozen hospitalizations I knew this would forever change my life and shape my career. Looking back, this was a major transformation in my life. After a lot of contemplation and reflection, I felt a stronger pull to mix my experience of skincare and wellness to create an entirely new esthetic experience. Giving a facial was much more about identifying what makes an entire person “whole.” I didn’t relate to the mainstream practice of what skincare trends were popular at this time. My studio, or enchanting haven as I like to call it, was born in December of 2022.

What inspired you to become an esthetician?

I always had a passion for the art of beauty and connecting with different parts of my community. I had prior experience in healing professions and joining the two of them was my dream

that I manifested into reality. This allows me to combine my love for skincare and wellness and use it as a means to positively impact people's lives. Working closely with women experiencing chemo, those recovering from addiction, and providing aromatherapy treatments to hospice patients are a few examples of human connection that keeps me inspired and motivated every day.

What beauty philosophy do you stand by?

I believe that beauty philosophies can evolve and change as we grow and experience different phases of life. For me, the skin serves as a window into

I carry three prominent brands in the studio: Image Skincare, Farmhouse Fresh and Wildernorth Botanicals. What is your secret to beautiful skin?

The secret to your skin’s vibrancy and resilience depends on much more than just external factors. First, build a supportive skincare routine based on your own personal needs. The most important steps should include cleansing, exfoliating, hydration and sun protection. Cultivate a healthy diet and sleep routine. Pay attention to your gut health. Don’t talk negatively to yourself. Most importantly, don’t hold on to trauma or negative emotions. This can directly affect wrinkle formation and muscle tension, which in turn can dramatically affect facial expression and induce inflammatory skin conditions. Chronic stress can speed up the aging process. Learn to pay attention to your breathing and make time for the things that make you feel good in your life.

What are your favorite tools to use in the treatment room and why?

Nothing compares to a microdermabrasion wand. It’s a classic modality that offers the ultimate brightening and repolishing of the skin. It’s pretty universal and almost anyone can receive one. My other favorites are facial reflexology tools and gua sha. For the ultimate lifting and proper detoxification of the lymphatic system.

What is your favorite part about working for your company?

I always imagined what it would feel like one day to walk into a space that I created. The gift of freedom to tailor every aspect from the ambience, to products, to the services offered. Overall, having the ability to share my vision while making a positive impact on my clients’ lives is something I will always be grateful for.
