CBD is everywhere and becoming increasingly popular in the world of skincare. But the rise of hemp and CBD-infused products is much more than a trend with the CBD cosmetics market expected to hit $1.7 billion by 2025. There are many known benefits to CBD and its effect on relieving anxiety, alleviating inflammation and pain, and aiding in sleep and rare forms of child epilepsy. But what does it have anything to do with skincare? Is CBD in skincare really effective? This month’s guide is all about where skin and wellness meet and the healing properties of CBD. You’ll learn how to shop for reputable products on the market and ways cannabidiol can be used in the spa, including in med spas to reduce bruising caused by Botox. Not only will you learn how CBD can calm inflammation in the skin, but other ways, too. Our article on Calming Inflammation explains the causes of inflammation in the body and soothing ingredients and antioxidants to treat the skin. Plus, so much more on keeping skin in balance, and how to prep the skin for flawless makeup application. If you attended ICES Long Beach 2021 or missed out, check out our Esthetician Edit recap. It was amazing seeing you all there face-to-face! I am counting down the days to Miami where we do it all over again. Sincerely,

Calming Inflammation Understanding the body’s inflammatory response and ways to soothe the skin by Kara McLucas Mark, L.E

September2021

LNEonline.com

skin Calming Inflammation Skin inflammation is a commonly recognized symptom of aggressors affecting our skin or body. It is mostly characterized by redness, swelling, tenderness, or warmth. Not every inflammatory response looks the same. Inflammation is caused by the body's immune system reacting to an unknown or aggravating substance. It can be brought on due to skincare ingredients, food sensitivities, or environmental aggressors. It affects nearly everyone at one time or another regardless of age, skin type, or lifestyle. Skin inflammation has many causes, whether introduced topically, through ingestion, or by just being exposed to environmental irritants. Skin is affected mainly by the products and procedures we apply and do. Typically, skin inflammation means that the natural microbiome and the skin's acid mantle have been disrupted. It can also indicate that the body overproduces white blood cells to remove an irritant but is causing more harm than good.

THE CAUSES OF INFLAMMATION IN THE BODY Let us look into some of the causes of inflammation. UV light and blue light cause inflammation by creating warmth and skin cell damage by breaking down collagen, elastin, and DNA. Some common dietary irritants are dairy, sugar, red meats, processed foods, caffeine, and alcohol. As the foods digest, they can release inflammation messengers in the body that can cause widespread or chronic inflammation. Underlying conditions such as rosacea or acne can cause the skin to be more sensitized and reactive. Environmental triggers can be pollution, allergies, or free radicals. The most significant contributors to skin inflammation are the products and procedures we apply and go through. With the growing skincare industry as well as influencer skin trends, things can go awry quickly. One thing that can contribute to inflammation is the improper layering of products. Say mixing vitamin C and retinol and using products with high levels or fragrances,

or applying too strong of a product without first building up a tolerance— for example, going straight for that 1% retinol without ever using retinol before. Improper usage of products not made for the face and harsh essential oils can cause inflammation too. Now would also be a good time to mention that there are some useful applications of inflammation. Most advanced aesthetic procedures such as micro-needling, laser treatments, microcurrent, etc., result in younger-looking skin by creating a healing response that increases circulation and the creation of collagen, among other things. However, it is when this inflammation is not controlled and allowed to continue that damage is created by causing the body to attack itself. Chronically inflamed skin can lead to psoriasis, dermatitis, rosacea, fine lines, wrinkles, and collagen and elastin breakdown.

niacinamide, sulfur, chamomile, aloe, and oatmeal are some common soothing ingredients. Antioxidants such as vitamin C, E, and D are good at reducing inflammation inside and out of the body. Anti-inflammatory foods include ginger, green tea, turmeric, dark chocolate, dark leafy greens, and berries. Avoiding over-exfoliation, using harsh exfoliants, stripping soaps, excessive sun exposure, and drinking more water are a few lifestyle changes that can help with inflammation. Suppose your client has chronic inflammation or inflammation that does not diminish with product application. In that case, they should consult their dermatologist to ensure that there isn't something more happening beneath the surface. Kara McLucas-Mark is a licensed esthetician with a medical focus. She has worked with multiple modalities including

non-ablative lasers, microcurrent, ultrasound skin tightening, and radiofrequency machines. She lives with her husband and two dogs outside of Annapolis, MD. She loves learning about new skin developments, her LED light, and jade roller!

Skin in Balance Going back to the basics by understanding the pH of skin by Joanna Kula, L.E.

skin Skin in Balance

One of the most important topics that estheticians learn early in their course of study is how pH relates to the skin. But what makes pH so important? Why is it necessary, and what can we as professionals do to help restore balance to the skin? Let’s dive a little deeper into the science and learn more about why pH is such a crucial component of skin health.

POTENTIAL OF HYDROGEN In chemistry, the term pH refers to the “potential of hydrogen” and measures the acidity and alkalinity of a solution based on the number of hydrogen ions present. The pH scale is logarithmic and ranges between 1 and 14. Each value represents a change of 10 times the previous value and is based around a neutral midpoint of 7, which is neither acidic nor alkaline. An acidic solution will have levels of hydrogen ions greater than the amount found in pure water. A basic solution, in contrast, will have a hydrogen ion concentration lower than that of water.

THE ACID MANTLE We can’t really talk about the pH of skin without mentioning the “acid mantle.” Often referred to as the skin’s “protective barrier” and comprised of mainly of sweat, sebum, lipids, and amino acids, the acid mantle is the protective layer that covers the surface of the stratum corneum and gives the skin a slightly acidic property that falls somewhere between 4.7 and 5.5 on the pH scale. This acidic environment not only keeps bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens from entering the skin, but it also supports the skin’s microbiome and plays a key role in proper barrier function, hydration, and sebum production.

WHY IS PH SO IMPORTANT? Maintaining proper pH balance of the skin is essential to keeping it healthy and strengthening its natural defense against the environment, pollution, bacteria, and other aggressors. When

Maintaining proper pH balance of the skin is essential to keeping it healthy and strengthening its natural defense against the environment, pollution, bacteria, and other aggressors. the pH is routinely disrupted in either direction, the skin can become more vulnerable to dryness, dehydration, redness, inflammation, eczema, hyperpigmentation, and acne.

RESTORE BALANCE & REPAIR THE SKIN BARRIER The first step towards restoring balance in the skin is to identify and address the underlying causes. The telltale signs of unbalanced skin are dry, flaky patches, inflammation, and redness. Using harsh products with either too high or too low pH daily can severely damage the barrier and leave the skin vulnerable. Alkaline cleaners, chemical peels, prescription topicals, active ingredients, stress, aging, poor lifestyle habits, and exposure to extreme elements such as heat, wind, and cold can all negatively impact the skin’s pH. Because the skin is naturally acidic, it favors anything around the same pH level or just slightly lower. Gentle AHAs and PHAs, such as lactic acid, mandelic acid and gluconolactone, and prebiotic and probiotic ingredients can stimulate the skin to produce more of its own moisturizing factors and lipids, as well as keep the microbiome flourishing.

In the treatment room, combining gentle cleansing/exfoliation with facial massage, a nourishing mask, and oxygen or LED light therapy can be an effective remedy to help restore the pH, reduce inflammation, and promote healing. For home care, clients should avoid over-cleansing or over-exfoliating the skin and use only pH-balanced products that have been recommended by a professional. A gentle cleanser and a restorative serum, cream or mask can be used daily until the skin improves. Once pH balance is restored, the skin should start to look calmer, healthier, and more hydrated. Active ingredients can then be reintroduced slowly and gradually. Our largest organ is remarkably efficient and capable of protecting itself from the constant onslaught of harsh elements and will usually normalize itself within a few days to a week. But, when the health of the skin hangs in the balance, we must do our best to avoid damaging it in the first place.

SPA OF THE MONTH

SIGNATURE TREATMENTS Zi Spa & Salon has three signature treatments for guests to choose from — the Signature Tranquility Body Journey, the Signature Sublime Facial, and the Signature “Walk in the Woods” Pedicure and Manicure. The Body Journey ($250, 2 hours) begins with a full-body tranquility sugar scrub exfoliation to renew the skin. Then a warm coconut oil hair conditioning treatment is applied before the guest indulges in an infinity Sok laden. Guests are invited to sip on a beverage of choice while soaking in tranquility bath oil. After emerging from the bath, the heart of the journey begins with a full body massage using velvety, rich oils. The Signature Sublime Facial ( $190, 90 minutes) addresses loss of elasticity, fine lines, wrinkles, sun spots, dehydration, and dullness. It effectively stimulates cellular regeneration, restores fullness, and redefines the volume of the face. Results are immediate, with a visibly firm, plumped, and even-toned face, neck, and decollate.

The “Walk in the Woods” Pedicure and Manicure consists of a warm, detoxifying foot bath, nail shaping, cuticle care, and a heel and foot exfoliation for a polished look. The treatment is then accompanied by a relaxing foot and hand massage and a warm paraffin wax treatment for s silky smooth, hydrated finish.

TRAINING Zi Spa & Salon has a staff of 45 employees. To ensure quality service and impeccable standards, team members meet monthly or bi-monthly. During these meetings, monthly specials are addressed, and comment cards from clients are read to give kudos’ to specific staff members. Employees are praised through fun gifts as well. As for new hires, a 90-day review is set up to check the following: • Are they dependable? • Are they a good team player? • Are they getting repeat requests from their guests? After the 90-day mark, their pay goes up. Yearly evaluations are then conducted to show further appreciation, and if the top commission rate hasn’t been met, then a raise is in order. Zi Spa also hosts end-of-year parties for the team that includes Holiday bonuses to further incentivize employees. Seventeen years strong since opening doors in July 2004, Spa Owner Tammy Schneider dedicates much of Zi Spa’s success to her terrific staff. “ Zi Spa believes to run an efficient spa is to hire the right employees that will make a difference in creating an unbelievable experience,” explains Schneider. Many of her team members have been with her for 10, 12, and 15 plus years. “I believe if you take care of your team and treat everyone with respect, they, in turn, become part of an amazing family and want to make a difference. I am so unbelievably fortunate and grateful to have such amazing quality professionals working for me,” says Schneider.

ONE SIMPLE STEP

WHAT MEN WANT:

How to Consult Male Clients in the Treatment Rooms

Sothy's HOMME Age-Defying Hydrating Fluid replenishes the skin and combats the signs of aging in one simple step. This men's moisturizer contains a complex of myrtle and rice bran to boost collagen synthesis, and Hyaluronic to lock in moisture. sothys.com

• Education is key, just like with any client. If your client is a teenager with acne, he may require more guidance than an older man open to suggesting skin rejuvenation and wellbeing.

• Be confident in your recommendations. Like all spa-goers, men are looking for results and don't have any time to waste. Be detailed in your skin analysis and use terms that appeal more to men like "revitalizing" and "vital" rather than feminine terms like "calming" and "soothing."

MEN’S SKIN TIP

• Avoid the salesy talk. Men don't like feeling like they're being sold to. Show them how the products feel on their skin instead.

The skin around the eyes is highly susceptible to under-eye dehydration. To prevent fine lines and wrinkles, dap a hydrating eye cream around your eyes every morning and evening.

• Keep it professional, and don't laugh at "dumb" questions. Women tend to be more knowledgeable than men on skincare, and that's okay. Men are loyal, so if you make them feel comfortable in their first consultation, they'll be likely to return.

A Holistic Training Approach The Four Pillars of Effective Spa Training by Monique Blake

Effective training is the foundation that solidifies and maintains brand integrity. Often when spa branding is mentioned, there is a natural focus on marketing. Marketing is invaluable to success when it clearly identifies the target market and then creates opportunities to attract the spa's ideal guest. Equally important and at the other end of the spa success spectrum is training. Whether it focuses on company culture, service protocols or guest service, effective training ultimately determines the outcome of the guest's face-to-face interaction with the brand.

26

September2021

LNEonline.com

business A Holistic Training Approach

While marketing leads the guest to the spa, it is a consistently well-executed service that brings the guest back repeatedly. Effective training is the cornerstone to exceptional guest service experiences. Therefore, an exceptionally planned and well-delivered training program is essential for brand integrity and spa success. Research offers indisputable evidence on the positive impact of training on customers, staff, and the bottom line. A Deloitte article entitled The New Organization states that 'learning opportunities are among the largest drivers of employee engagement and strong workplace culture' and results in a 37% increase in productivity. A Gallup research showed that a "highly engaged workforce would outperform those with low engagement levels by 21% in productivity and 22% in profitability." Nevertheless, often spas do not design or budget sufficiently for training. The approach to training feels more like a la carte than a strategic and well-developed holistic program. In this article, we will examine four pillars to integrate a holistic training model. The emphasis is on service protocols education, but the template can be used for all types of training.

Knowing your why is the necessary starting point for all training. As Stephen Covey from the 'Seven Habits of Highly Effective People' states, 'start with the end in mind.' In other words, think not only about why you would like to train (introduce a hot new industry, teach new COVID standards, or refresh technical skills due to guest feedback), but also what goals you would like to achieve with the training (e.g., specific revenue amount). Next, consider which metrics (rebooking, increase in average ticket, etc.) you will use to measure the success of these goals.

PILLAR 2: THE PLATFORM The platform determines the method of delivery, i.e., the where. It answers the question, 'What learning management platform or live venue can be used for training?' • Learning management system platform (LMS) • Live Learning • Blended learning (virtual and live) Using a learning management system for online training is one fundamental

way to create cost savings and consistency in today's environment. There are many platforms on the market, so it will take some time and research to determine a good fit for your training needs. You will also have to decide how the service provider will access this platform. Will there be a laptop at the location set aside for this? Will the service provider be able to access it on their mobile devices? How and when will you schedule training sessions? On slow days? Or downtime? How do you compensate for online training? Live learning for hands-on services is a must for a high-touch industry. Service providers need to see and touch to grasp a new skillfully. Additionally, live learning, when planned well, can be a team-building activity. Many service providers work in isolation. They work one-on-one with guests behind closed doors and have little time to interact with their counterparts. Cultivating a community is one of the additional benefits of live training. A blended training offers the best of both worlds. There is usually a theory portion as well. In a blended scenario, the theory can be completed online. Participants can submit their questions

The Four Pillars of Holistic Training: Holistic training is a plan that encompasses the why, where, who,, and when.

PILLAR 1: THE PLAN The plan clarifies the reason or the 'why' for training. It answers the questions, 'What is the purpose of the training? and 'What is the problem you are trying to solve? 'Below are four typical reasons to plan training: • To introduce an innovation • To maintain important standards • To re-engage company culture • To refresh technical skills

LNEonline.com

September2021

27

business A Holistic Training Approach and be evaluated on comprehension before the live training. This prior involvement stokes engagement in the live training and typically enhances the results.

PILLAR 3: THE PARTICIPANTS This pillar clearly speaks to those who will participate in the training. It answers the question, 'Who do I need to engage in this training?' • Maximize engagement by focusing on learning styles • Include leaders from all departments Many service providers are highly kinesthetic learners. Therefore, they need to actively participate in smaller hands-on training that is not lecture heavy. This is where a blended format is beneficial. The theory necessary for the training can be completed online, maximizing the hands-on training in the live session. Finally, one of the most significant missed opportunities is that service trainings are often exclusively attended by service providers. Providers are the last person to inform the guest about the service. The guest will interact with the front desk team, spa attendants, and sometimes even management before their service. These associates' personal understanding and experience with the treatment is critical. Including them is also a fun way for them to connect and learn about their co-workers, while getting to know the mechanics of the service.

es are two training approaches that are pivotal to service success but are often overlooked. A post-training period is recommended for training integration. After the hands-on session, additional questions often come up, along with the need for quick reminders on specific techniques. Pre, live, and post-training may sound like a lot, but it is the foundation of instructional design. With learning models like Bloom's Taxonomy, there is a presentation and comprehension of knowledge (recommended in the pre, online portion) followed by application and analysis (perfect for the live hands-on portion). It is at this point that most trainings end. What is missing is the synthesis and evaluation. A virtual post-training session and/or an evaluation component with a spa lead are both ways to check for proficient integration of the training. Refresher courses are often a response to guest complaints. Spas, however, can be proactive and work to limit negative guest feedback with periodic refresher courses. When re-

fresher courses are a part of a training program, service providers are less likely to view it as punitive. Understandably, a training program requires an investment in time. Time is money. Nevertheless, investing in excellence is more cost-effective than repairing the damage of an unsatisfied guest. Training trumps a perfectly written service description, perfectly manicured brand image, competitive pricing, and more. A guest is more likely to overlook gaps in these areas if their experience is superlative.

business Retail Sales for the Modern Esthetician

Retail Sales for the Modern Esthetician Change your relationship with sales by Mara Jenkins and Marie Adamo

As a skin care professional, you are probably all too aware of the importance of retail sales. Not only do retail sales determine your paycheck, but they also determine your clients’ results — and in turn, client loyalty and referrals. In other words: the success of your business depends on retail sales. Yet, retail sales are not why most of us got into this work. And selling can sometimes feel… well, icky.

business Retail Sales for the Modern Esthetician

In 2019, Skin Care Literature surveyed over 360 skin care professionals — and 95% cited retail sales as the most challenging part of their job. Fears about being "pushy”, not having enough product knowledge, and online retailer competition rose to the top. But here’s the thing: if you aren’t enjoying selling, your clients certainly aren’t either. The modern consumer is being marketed to all day, every day, so they can smell a sales pitch a mile away. To rid ourselves of features & benefits lists and the dreaded “hard sell” at the product wall, it’s time to modernize the retailing experience in our industry. Here are Skin Care Literature’s three keys to easy, natural retail sales in 2021 and beyond.

LEAD WITH SCIENCE The skincare industry is now worth a whopping 155.8 billion US dollars with no signs of slowing down. This is amazing news for the professionals like you in our industry. However, the key is to position yourself as an expert — not a salesperson — to capitalize on this growth. According to Cosmetify online search data in 2020, consumers are no longer searching for products for skin conditions (such as “anti-aging cream”), but rather for specific ingredients (like “retinol” or “hyaluronic acid”). These trends tell us that our clients are getting savvier — and they know the difference between science and marketing. In fact, a study by Nielsen found that 67% of consumers said that an endorsement from an unbiased expert makes them more likely to consider purchasing, and 92% of people trust a personal recommendation over brand marketing. Of course, the reality is that we carry and get the majority of our education from skincare brands. So to earn the trust of our well-informed clients, we need to adapt our communication. Ask yourself: Am I using a branded

pitch to educate my clients, or my advanced skin and ingredient knowledge? Am I leading with the science behind this formula, or am I using the same product description my client could find online? And, finally, am I explaining why this treatment is right for this individual’s skin, or am I using a onesize-fits-all elevator speech? This brings us to our next key...

KNOW YOUR SERVICE The fact is, esthetic services are elective — no matter how important we know professional skin care is. That’s why it’s essential that we know the service our clients sought us out for. What is their goal? Why did they book this appointment and what do they hope to get out of it?

ADVANCE YOUR SKILL And finally, just like in any skilled profession, you can’t be an expert without staying an expert. It takes continuous learning and advancing your knowledge to remain a trusted authority in your field. The key is that your skill is not the facials you perform; it’s your expertise. After all, clients don’t pay for a facial or product — they pay for an outcome. And it’s your expertise (in identifying skin conditions and causation to create personalized treatment plans) that gets them that outcome. This mindset shift is a game-changer when it comes to improving your retail sales. However, it requires a commitment to continually hone your expertise and advance your knowledge of skin, ingredients, and technology

The key is to position yourself as an expert — not a salesperson — to capitalize on this growth. The good news is that if someone is in your facial bed, they are primed to buy. You just need to figure out what they hope to change or maintain in their skin and then educate them on how they can achieve it. That is your service. And the fact is, achieving results requires home care — i.e. retail sales! The key is to shift your approach from “how can I make this sale” (which focuses on discounts, fear tactics, or sales gimmicks), to “how can I help this person achieve their skin goals” — why they came to you in the first place. Ironically, not focusing on sales will result in more sales... just without that awkward, end-of-treatment exchange that can dampen the whole experience for both of you.

— not just brands and products. That’s why the mission of Skin Care Literature is to provide brand-agnostic education to elevate your “job in esthetics” to a lucrative career as a skin expert.

Mara Jenkins is a global educator, advanced aesthetician, and creator of Skin Care Literature, a brand-agnostic education membership for estheticians wishing to specialize in skin. She is also the founder of Sales Haters Academy: the New School of Retail for Career Estheticians — an online course based on modern consumer psychology, to optimize the client journey for sales and elevate estheticians to be perceived as the experts they are. skincarelit.com

What inspired you to become an esthetician? I always knew I wanted a career helping others. I thought I'd go to medical school, but it took me a while to find my path when that didn't work out. What drew me to esthetics was that it was a mix of science, chemistry, and art, but seeing how estheticians change lives inspired me the most.

What inspired you to go out on your own and create your own business? It was something I had thought about for a long time but never felt ready for. When the pandemic hit, everything changed. I lost my job and the financial security that came with it, and I decided to go for it. Embracing uncertainty became my source of strength and gave me the inspiration and courage that I needed to start.

What is your skincare philosophy? I believe in strengthening the skin rather than breaking it down. Everything I do is non-invasive and supports the skin's own healing process.

What makes your services unique?

What are your favorite techniques to use in the treatment room?

you get clients through the door you have to earn their trust and maintain it. That's how you build loyalty.

Manual lifting and sculpting because it's so transformative and so much fun to watch.

What do you believe is your secret to success?

What is in your magic tool set? What is one tool you can't live without? My toolset includes everything from microdermabrasion to micro-current, ultrasound, radiofrequency, oxygen, LED light, the list goes on, but my hands are my most valuable tool. Nothing can replace them.

What are the benefits of virtual skin consultations? How have they benefited your business? Virtual consultations are wonderful because they allow us to help more people and reach a wider demographic. I think they've definitely shifted the playing field by putting skincare professionals in the forefront. They're a win-win for clients and estheticians.

How do you obtain and maintain loyal clientele?

Having good mentors, working smart, and always challenging myself.

What advice would you give to solo estheticians looking to brand themselves? Be authentically you, believe in what you are promoting, and do it with a passion. Your brand is what you do and how you do it, so let that become an extension of yourself, and the world will start to take notice.

What are some challenges you have faced, and how do you overcome them? I always look at challenges from an engineer's perspective and try to problem-solve my way through. Opening a business during a pandemic was extremely challenging and frustrating because there was very little that I had control over. Staying fully committed and trusting the process is what kept me moving forward.

I built my clientele mostly through social media and word of mouth. Once

I was trained in traditional European techniques, an art form in itself, but I combine that with science and cuttingedge technology, which allows me to do more advanced treatments and take results to a whole new level.

What is a high-tech facial, and why do you need one? A high-tech facial combines the latest and most advanced tools like micro-current, ultrasound, radiofrequency, LED light, etc., usually within the same treatment. Using different forms of energy really helps to kickstart cell metabolism and collagen production, which we all need as we get older.

CBD Guide

NAVIGATING THE WORLD OF CBD How to choose the right products in an oversaturated market by Natalie Bustamante

38

September2021

LNEonline.com

CBD Guide

CBD is the new hyaluronic acid. It seems like overnight everyone decided to infuse their line of beauty products with this magical ingredient. You can find it in face creams, soaps, lip balms, body butters, bath salts, and even deodorant. Famous brands have added this plant extract to one or more of their products, while a plethora of CBD skincare lines have launched in the last two years. But in an oversaturated market, how do you pick the tincture that is right for you, and is this active ingredient even worth its price point?

INTRODUCTION TO CBD Cannabidiol, or CBD, is a naturally occurring chemical compound found in the cannabis plant. Unlike THC, the more commonly known compound in cannabis, CBD is non-psychoactive and will never make you feel high. CBD does its job by supporting your endocannabinoid system. The endocannabinoid system, or ECS, is a complex cell-signaling system present in all mammals. CBD is a cannabinoid, which means that our system was designed to receive it. The ECS regulates inflammation, anxiety, sleep, pain, mood, appetite, memory, reproduction, and even fertility. CBD supports this system by helping it reach homeostasis, a state of physiological balance or equilibrium. To put it simply, our body is constantly working to find its balance, and CBD helps get you there.

CBD TINCTURES Above all, CBD is hailed for its powerful anti-inflammatory properties. Inflammation is the root of most diseases and affects everything from our digestion to our skin. If your gut is inflamed, you aren’t getting a full night’s rest, and you are constantly anxious or stressed, your skin will usually reflect that. By removing inflammation from within, CBD helps us glow by targeting the root of the problems instead of covering them up.

TOPICAL CBD If you don’t want to ingest your CBD, the good news is that CBD has shown that it truly is worth all the hype when applied topically. Add a few drops of your favorite CBD oil to your face serum, moisturizing cream, or even shampoo and see for yourself. When applied topically, CBD has shown to be a powerful tool for treating rosacea, eczema, dermatitis,, and psoriasis. It is also being used in Spas around the country as an add-on to massages and facials. Additionally, it helps fight acne by reducing the production of sebum in the skin and can even reduce the appearance of scars.

As with most botanical products, we should always aim to buy CBD extracted from hemp plants that are non-GMO and organically grown.

HOW TO SHOP FOR CBD Now that we understand how this botanical extract can help elevate our skincare routine, we are still left with the daunting task of choosing a brand in an oversaturated market. The first thing to look for is third-party testing when selecting a CBD tincture or skincare product. Most reputable brands will add QR codes to their packaging to take you directly to their testing or will add this information on their website. Third-party testing will show you exactly how much CBD is in the product if any heavy metals or pesticides were detected and even screen for myco-

toxins or fungi. If a brand isn’t showing you their third-party testing, consider this a huge red flag. Next, we want to look for cannabinoid content or how many milligrams of active CBD is actually in the product. The packaging or label of your CBD product needs to state the active milligrams, and this number should match the number found on the third-party testing. You also want to make sure that the dosing instructions are clear, that your product comes with an expiration date as CBD is an active ingredient and that the brand isn’t making any outlandish claims without conducting their own studies on their product. The FDA does not allow CBD brands to make claims without formal studies, so any brand doing so without the science to back it up should make you immediately wary. As with most botanical products, we should always aim to buy CBD extracted from hemp plants that are non-GMO and organically grown. The bottle or packaging should detail all of this, but a quick search on a brand’s website should also remove any doubts about the product. If a brand is obscure about what’s in or what is not in their product, you should probably go with another brand. You don’t need to be a detective to find a product that works and is a good bang for your buck. A little bit of research and label reading will take you a long way. CBD can improve your skin from the inside out while helping you manage stress and get a better night’s sleep.

The Magic of CBD in the Spa

Ways to add CBD to your spa menu by Dr. Fred Sahafi The magic and glory of Cannabidiol (CBD) from Hemp is a fountain of youth that your body will respond to in shocking and exciting ways through receptors that exist in your body known as the Endocannabinoid System or ECS. Two ECS receptors called CB1 and CB2, receive the CBD molecule and turn it into proteins

called Anandamide and 2-AG. The increased flow of these proteins in your bloodstream creates homeostasis in your physiological systems, reducing inflammation in the body. Spa owners and aestheticians can incorporate CBD into their services in various ways that will help the consumer achieve greater results and faster healing times. The FDA does not currently allow any manufacturers of CBD to make any claims about the efficacy of the plant. Still, thousands of studies are available online through various Universities around the globe. CBD can be made in three ways. The best of which is defined as "Full Spectrum," meaning seven different Cannabidiol molecules that include the Hemp version of THC, "Broad Spectrum," which is six molecules sans the THC molecule, and "Isolate," which means just the CBD molecule. The effectiveness of CBD in your body is incumbent on the milligram count and which type of CBD you are using. Most hemp products in the beauty sphere are being manufactured with "Isolate," which is why you do not have the desired effect that you have been promised. Full Spectrum CBD works in what is called the "Entourage Effect," with the presence of THC molecule binding the six other Cannabinoids to your CB1 and CB2 receptors. The second most crucial aspect of success with CBD in products and practice is the Milligram count in the product or application. The average female weighing anywhere from 120 to 180 pounds will need a daily supplement of 50 mg of full-spectrum CBD to achieve homeostasis in her physiological systems. CBD is not aspirin. It is a daily routine that is easily incorporated through sublingual application to achieve less pain, a balanced endocrine system, the destruction of calcium deposits from scars and stretch marks, glowing skin, healthier hair, healing of bruises, and in a lovely way, make your feet hurt less.

Every spa needs to have a Full Spectrum 1400+mg jar of salve in their toolbox for use on areas treated with fillers or Botox to alleviate bruising and swelling and ease the pain. Salves are also useful for ablative and non-ablative laser treatment areas to alleviate pain and usher in faster healing times. If Salicylic, Glycolic, and TCA peels are on your menu, applying CBD post-peel will alleviate redness, heat and help the skin heal faster. For ablated skin, a CBD spray with a high mg count will help reduce inflammation and increase healing time. Similarly, CO2 laser treatment areas experience 50% faster healing times with CBD than without. When you think about the two-week recovery time for a CO2 laser being the barrier to increased sales, finding a way to cut recovery time in half and with less pain is in every aspect a means to increase sales. Beauty does not have to mean pain or sacrifice. Decreased downtime and a more comfortable experience translates to a filled appointment calendar. 50 mg Full Spectrum Lip Balms are ideal for selling in your spa for lip injections to help ease pain and bruising on the lip. There are multiple studies conducted regarding CBD and acne that prove its viability. CBD topically and orally will combat acne by reducing the inflammation in the skin. Topical facial creams with at least a 500 mg Full

Spectrum count that are used daily will calm irritated skin and reduce unwanted breakouts in adults while creating a glowing effect. Hyperpigmentation on the face can be addressed with a 30mg face mask used three times a week or 50 mg full spectrum patches placed directly on the treatment area. CBD has a fountain of youth effect on your body and skin. The antioxidants in Full Spectrum CBD are a one-way topical use that helps lessen the visible signs of aging. By counteracting free radicals damage and reducing the look of inflammation, CBD anti-aging creams and serums visibly reduce wrinkles, dullness, and redness in the skin. Your skin will feel hydrated and glowing. CBD is here to stay. Incorporating it into your spa services will create a bond of trust between you and your patients because you gave them a product of real value to address their needs.

Dr. Fred Sahafi, our cosmetic surgeon, is board certified by the International Board of Cosmetic surgery and is a member of the American Academy Of Cosmetic Surgery and American Academy of Esthetic Medicine. He has performed more than 25,000 cosmetic procedures and has now utilized his experience to create skincare products that maximize beauty, health and fitness results in his patient’s value.

CBG in Skincare What is CBG and how will it affect the skincare industry? by Jeff Beatty

Most people have heard of or tried CBD or THC products; a lesser-known but equally important cannabinoid is gaining availability in products called cannabigerol (CBG). CBG is somewhat of a mother cannabinoid in that it is first produced by hemp plants and becomes THC, CBD, and CBC once broken down by plant enzymes. CBG is non-psychoactive and, much like CBD, acts on receptor sites located in each skill cell and hair follicle once it penetrates the epidermis. Once it has penetrated the basal and subcutaneous layers of the epidermis it can help with inflammation, reducing blemishes, purifies pores, balances sebum (oil) production, and assists with cellular turnover. Typically, CBG accounts for less than 1% of cannabinoids present because the plant converts it quickly; however, new fermentation methods are in use to create CBG without cultivating hemp plants and to create isolated compounds without worrying about residual THC.

42

September2021

This cannabinoid will play an important role in the formulation of new products from skin serums, lotions, masks, toners, and massage oils.

organic & wellness The Power of Breath

Today, Conscious Breathwork is becoming more and more popular because it's a healing modality that actually works! Plus, you don't need to go anywhere or do anything special - all you need is your breath.

Your clients seek connection. The truth is every client you encounter is seeking connection. They want to be seen, want to be heard, and feel good about themselves. As the professional, you are holding space for them to process, release, and transform. Often, clients arrive with an entire lifetime of unprocessed trauma, not feeling good enough in their bodies, and want to feel alive again. You hold space for your clients in ways they may not get in their day-to-day lives. I know you know what I'm talking about. When a client is vulnerable, sharing their stories, feelings, and being REAL with you, this is an opportunity to connect, support, and help them digest life. Breathwork provides you with the tools to help your client and you - that much more. Using breathwork to strengthen the relationship between you and the client will have positive, long-lasting effects. Help them de-stress more, overcome anxiety, and feel more connected to themself. With breathwork you become a safe, empowering space, and you'll be able to learn how not to absorb their energy too.

Conscious breathing invites new life into the body. Consciously breathing physically oxygenates your blood, bringing new life to areas of the body and mind. It benefits your circulation, hormone levels, and cognitive function. It can help you remove toxic excess in your body that may be causing sickness such as headaches, chronic fatigue, lightheadedness, and dizziness. It can strengthen and balance your stress response systems, lower your stress, anxiety and transform trauma responses (fight, 50

flight, freeze, foe, friend) into experiencing connection, compassion, and love. I know it's amazing, right? Think of consciously breathing as an umbrella term that describes an endless list of different breathing techniques best fit to your needs in life. Breathing techniques can be used to finally get a full night of deep sleep, feel rejuvenated and energized, minimize physical pain and enhance sport performance, improve relationships and your ability to focus, and move through trauma and maintain a positive outlook on life. The list is endless.

desires. There's always more healing to do, more change, and shifts that need to be made. Learning breathwork will empower you to live life in your truth, honoring your feelings and needs along the way. Breathwork helps us process unresolved trauma and create healthy boundaries. It is a journey of self-improvement and development filled with healing, growth, transformation of the mind, body, and spirit. The most powerful truth about breathwork is that it allows you to become your own healer.

So, what is Introspective Breathwork? Introspective breathwork is all about inner-healing and becoming a safe space for yourself and others. Feeling safe is important because when we feel safe, we become more vulnerable, more willing to explore parts of ourselves that may be overwhelming. organic & wellness The Truth About Beauty Sleep

What can looking at the skin tell you about your sleep? Quite a bit. In a 2017 Study on the negative effects of restricted sleep on facial appearance and social appeal, researchers found that acute sleep deprivation and looking tired are related to decreased attractiveness and health, as perceived by others. This suggests that one might also avoid contact with sleep-deprived or sleepy-looking individuals as a strategy to reduce health risk and poor interactions. Also, in a study conducted in 2013 on the Cues of Fatigue: Effects of Sleep Deprivation on Facial Appearance, evidence showed that when evaluating pictures of sleepy people, they were extremely easy to identify.

What are the effects of sleep deprivation on the skin? Dull, dry skin is one of the most frustrating signs of visible aging for a lot of my patients. Deep sleep’s cellular repair and the sleep-related surge of HGH promote the body’s repair of damaged skin cells and the growth of new ones, creating more of the dewy, youthful look that everyone wants. And sleep’s hydration powers are critical to combat dry, dull skin. When we’re dehydrated, our skin looks tired and dull. A lack of sleep can contribute to dehydration by interrupting the release of the hormone vasopressin, which plays a key role in keeping the body hydrated. During sleep, the body sweats as a way to maintain its core temperature. Sweating brings moisture to the cells of the skin’s uppermost layers, filling them with water and leaving skin looking full and firm. Stress makes skin appear dull. The stress hormone cortisol can affect blood circulation to cells throughout the body, including to the skin. A routine of sleeping well helps keep stress in check. That can translate into more vitality and radiance in the appearance of your skin. Sleep deprivation also lowers circulation, making skin look pale, dull, and

• They should lower the lights and sound, and temperature to create the right environment.

Our skin is a network of collagen and elastin fibers, and as collagen declines and elastin fibers become more stretched out, wrinkles and fine lines appear. This is due to arterial aging— the age-related damage and decline in the functioning of the heart and blood vessels—speeds up the breakdown of elastin fibers. When you get the plentiful, high-quality sleep you need regularly, arterial aging slows down, reducing the presence of wrinkles. The cellular repair work that takes place during sleep increases skin cells’ protection against sun damage and other environmental damage, all significant causes of wrinkles. HGH boosts the production rate of new skin cells and stimulates collagen production, helping skin retain greater elasticity. And the hydrating effects of deep, restful sleep allow skin cells to retain more fluid, making skin more naturally moisturized and diminishing the appearance of wrinkles.

What remedies and techniques can spa professionals and estheticians use in their treatments to help clients sleep better? This will depend upon the problem they are facing. In most cases, any relaxing spa treatment before bed, massage, meditation, YOGA, etc. ( as long as it has been created for sleep purposes) is often helpful. I am often asked to consult with the biggest Spas in the world about creating specific sleep programs for them. Some of these you can see are at Six Senses Hotels, and I am currently working with Amangari.

Prep & Prime How to prep the skin for flawless makeup application by Kiyana Riley, L.E As a professional makeup artist and licensed esthetician, the number one rule for the most beautiful makeup application will all take place in the prepping of the skin. Yes, that's right. Quoted by many, including myself, "your makeup is only as good as your skin," so that is where the glam starts. Let me walk you through some Skin Prepping techniques to achieve that natural dewy glow before makeup application!

Depending on the occasion and how much time you have, prepping the skin can be as quick as three minutes or up to 30 minutes. From cleansing and depuffing the eyes with an eye mask and from hydrating serums to nourishing moisturizers, there are several options to achieve well-prepped skin. When preparing the face for makeup, the first and most crucial step is to have clean skin. If you're working on a client and uncertain that your client's skin is its cleanest, have micellar water cleanser handy. Micellar water will not only cleanse the skin by removing excess dirt, debris, or makeup they may have left on the skin, but it will also tone and hydrate the skin. Otherwise, double cleanse the skin using an oil base pre-cleanse and your second cleanser of choice to cleanse the skin thoroughly. Please refrain from using alcohol-based products, as alcohol strips the skin and drys it out. The goal is for the skin to be well hydrated. After you've cleansed with micellar water, you can apply a sheet mask

for optimal hydration and under-eye masks if time allows. This will also help with puffiness and dark circles. Leave the masks on for about 10-15 minutes. You can massage the excess gel from the mask into the skin with your fingertips or a gua sha or jade roller stone. These are great tools for helping to instantly lift and sculpt the skin while also helping with lymphatic drainage, relieving tension, and improving fine lines and wrinkles. After applying your serum or elixir of choice, you can also use these tools, which would come after the mask. I always use a vitamin c based serum to help with a natural healthy glow. Another option is beauty elixirs. They often have 24k flakes in them, leaving the skin luminous! Some artists even mix them into their foundation of choice. Next, let's seal the deal with a moisturizer! A friendly reminder, moisturizer is your last step. It locks in all the active ingredients from the prep work we just did.

It is great to have a few moisturizer options in your kit for the many different skin types if you're working on clients. It would help if you had options such as an oil-free moisturizer for more oily skin types and one that's a bit heavier for more normal to dry skin types. I also recommend having an SPF nearby as well. You can find a 2-in-1 SPF/moisturizer blend to cut out an additional step. All work you do on the skin is null and void if you don't protect it in the end! It is optional to use your hands or a brush to work in the moisturizer. However, I like to use my hands! Now that the skin is well prepped and hydrated, it's time for primer. Primer is also an optional step. There are several primers to choose from depending on your client's skin type. Primer is meant to help the makeup last longer throughout the day and protect the skin from the makeup sitting directly on it. If you choose to use it, work it from the middle of the face outward, blending into the skin seamlessly. Now you are officially ready to apply your makeup application. I hope these tips and tricks have been helpful. Try them out, and see what a difference healthy skin can make in your makeup application.
