Maintaining a routine while traveling by Kaelin Jutras

Traveling can be a thrilling experience, and whether it's during the holidays, for work, or a vacay, we want to help you advise clients on putting their healthiest face forward so they can feel their best, without travel taking a toll on their skin. Between changing climates, high altitudes in-flight, environmental stressors, and disrupted skincare (and sleep) routines, skin goes through a lot while you're on the go. But travels don’t have to compromise skin health. Take it from the skincare professionals who travel year-round teaching and exploring throughout the country for this ultimate guide to maintaining skin rituals while traveling!

Skincare on the Go

1. Plan Ahead and Invest In MultiTasking Products

The key to maintaining a skin ritual while traveling is to pack wisely. Start by researching the destination's climate and plan accordingly. If you're traveling to a colder climate, bring a facial oil to lock in moisturizer and protect skin from the harsh windy and frigid temperatures. This prevents trans epidermal water loss (a technique referred to as slugging). On the other hand, if you're going to a warmer climate, pack a lightweight serum that doubles as a moisturizer. To keep packing light and the skincare routine simple, it's a great idea to invest in multi-tasking products such as a primer with SPF so that sun protection doubles as makeup prep. Serums that target a multitude of concerns such as a polypetide complex are great for hydration and acne healing. Additionally, try to bring mini versions of skincare products to save space in luggage and make it easier to carry the essentials while traveling. Pro Tip: pack them in your carry on. If your luggage goes MIA, at least you’ll be able to cleanse and hydrate your skin!

2. Keep It Simple

While it can be tempting to bring your entire skincare routine with you on your travels, it's best to stick to the basics. This will not only save space in your

12

January2024

LNEonline.com

luggage, but will also prevent you from overloading your skin with too many products, which can cause irritation and breakouts. Stick to a simple routine that includes a cleanser, serum, moisturizer, and SPF and you'll be good to go.

3. Protect the Skin

Traveling exposes skin to a lot of environmental stressors such as pollution and dehydration. To combat this, make sure to hydrate on a cellular level, both internally and topically. Drink plenty of water with electrolytes and be sure to apply hydrating serums and moisturize regularly. Sporting a hat and sunglasses in addition to SPF will help protect skin from the sun's harmful UV rays.

4. Take Advantage of Samples

Many supportive skincare brands offer travel-sized sample packs that are perfect for maintaining skin rituals on the go. These sample packs ensure

that you never compromise your skin or over-pack for your trip. Maintaining skin rituals while traveling doesn't have to be a daunting task. With a little planning, keeping it simple, protecting the skin, and making use of samples, you can easily maintain your skin health while on the go. So, pack your bags, follow these tips, and get ready for a memorable journey with gorgeous, healthy skin!

We could all use a little help drumming up business at the start of a new year, and rewarding clients who refer your business is a simple way to do it. This can be done with discounts on services or memberships, gift certificates, or product samples. You can even take it a step further and offer the new client a discount on their first visit. It may slightly cut into profits, but growing your clientele is what ultimately builds your business. How rewarding!

Happy Ending

How to conclude a facial treatment

It is imperative that we focus on ending the treatment with anti-inflammatory ingredients, fibers and devices. It is also crucial to end the treatment by strengthening the new skin cells exposed and use anti-bacterial and anti-fungal ingredients. “The post care method” consists of three stages. Post care should start in the treatment room and be followed for seven days after the treatment, regardless of treatment type. The three stages of the post care method are as follows: repair, hydrate, build. We need to repair the barrier, hydrate the new cells that shed over the new few days, and build new collagen into the skin. There is a short window after a professional treatment where the skin can change dramatically for the better or even for the worse. It is our job, as estheticians, to recognize this and treat the skin vastly different after a treatment than you would otherwise. Once the treatment is complete, be sure to give your clients a post care method form and review it before they leave. Check in on your clients after the treatment to see how the skin is reacting. This will help deliver the best results. We start facial treatments the same, so let’s end on the same note to ensure the best results for our clients.

As estheticians, we were taught how to start a facial treatment. We double cleanse, we do an analysis, and we degrease. What happens after that is dependent on the protocol. However, we should be ending every facial treatment the same way, regardless of treatment or skin condition. The aftermath is arguably more important now that the skin is sensitized and vulnerable.

Once the treatment has been completed, every skin condition should end with a light acid, biocellulose fibers, red light therapy, a hydrator, and sunscreen - in this order. Sunscreen is the only product that is optional based on the treatment and time of day. This order of operations is what I call “the post care method.”

She loves educating and helping estheticians grow their business, and is looking forward to speaking at ICES shows in 2024!

What inspired you to get started in the esthetics field? It really was my mom who started it when she gave me a gift box of skincare. The kit was a cleanser, scrub, toner, moisturizer, and sunscreen, and I just fell in love with that process, and it became my obsession. Flash forward 10 years to when I was 24 and in college, feeling lost and not knowing what I wanted to do. A friend suggested we go get a facial at this beauty school for only $20. I had never had a facial, and I had a 10 percent glycolic peel that is the reason I am here talking to you today. I didn’t know skincare could actually give this immediate result. I thought “This is it, this is what I want to do,” and I enrolled in school two weeks later. Can you share a bit about your professional background? I was so obsessed with skincare and thought I knew everything there was to know. I pushed my way in to my first job at a spa owned by a brain surgeon who wanted to have a spa business. I was her first esthetician. I really wanted to learn more about the science of skincare, and after that job I went to an actual MedSpa that had lasers and needed an esthetician. I then got an opportunity through a friend, who was a brand rep for Cosmedix, at a doctor’s office in Manhattan, which led to another opportunity, through another friend, in San Francisco. Things weren’t going well at the doctor’s office, so I came to San Francisco and have been here building my clientele for almost 16 years. I started at Bella Pelle, a really successful studio, and I was just thrilled. I learned waxing, which I had never done before, leg waxing, Brazilians, brows. I finally opened my own practice in 2016, Skin Clinical SF. It was a super scary time in my life, but I was ready, and I did it. I was fully booked so I’m

28

not sure what I was so afraid of. It was hugely successful and an incredible time for me. Can you describe the Aesthetician Revolution and the work you are doing in support of estheticians? It ultimately boils down to an awareness and an awakening for solo estheticians, actually all estheticians. It’s bringing an awareness to what we are doing when we partner with certain brands, the behavior of brands in this industry, and how that is shaping the landscape for the next generation of estheticians. It really is about estheticians supporting estheticians on the ground floor so we can make better decisions not only for our own businesses, but for the esthetics industry as a whole. Why is education such a crucial part of this industry? Because it’s lacking! That’s the simple answer. We are trained for six months on compliance, sanitation standards,

and technique, but don’t have any business skills, any understanding of margins, negotiations – that is all led by brands. Non-biased, esthetician led and driven education is where you’ll find experienced estheticians helping the younger generation with no gatekeeping. That’s what I’m so passionate about. Have you developed and launched any esthetics products? At my previous jobs, I was so interested in learning about formulations and worked with a lot of labs. I got to be part of their development process and learn from them. I was the lead esthetician for the launch of Proven Skincare in 2019, which was an AI-powered skincare database that created kits for people based on science and data. I started with private labeling from some great labs, but I feel like that part of the industry gets a bad rap. That’s

why I launched my course on Golden Experience Guide, “Create Your Signature Products,” to show young estheticians what that really is like. Along the way I started formulating my own products like my Cryo-Peptide Mask, launching to my clientele and other professionals. I’m working on more formulations as well. How have you taken hardship in your life or career and turned it into a positive outcome? In 2008, I was fired from my job. Long story short, I was doing it all, multiple jobs, and I made an administrative mistake. It was an excuse because it was 2008, everything had crashed, it was horrible. So I knew I was a sacrificial lamb, but that was a really hard wake up call. I was so lost, I had just moved across the country, and everywhere I looked was disaster. A friend recog-

nized what I was going through and sent me to a kind therapist who saw me for $20 a week. I was determined not to move home, so I went to a beauty store in an upscale neighborhood with one treatment room in the back. They had an ad for an esthetician on Craigslist, I went and met with the owner and convinced her to hire me. I was determined to make a success of it by sticking to what I loved - skincare.

What advice would you give to estheticians just starting out who want to grow their business? There are so many ways, the possibilities are endless. Knowing yourself and your strengths is important. Invest in getting to know who you are and how that can help you in business. Make relationships, reach out and don’t stop reaching out. Put your fears aside and lean into your strengths. Also, adopt a growth mindset.

What is the key to accomplishing your goals in this industry? I wouldn’t say there is one key, but absolute and utter commitment and determination. You need to know your “why” for doing this, why it lights you up and gives you joy. Life is going to happen, you will have massive setbacks you can’t predict. If you stick it out you will come out on top and be successful.

How would you forecast the future of the esthetics industry? Technology is the future of all industries. Robots can’t give facials yet, but AI is already helping save so much time with ChatGPT helping to write marketing emails and social media captions. If you can get your thoughts down, you don’t have to worry about making it perfect. These tools will set the message and tone. Also, helping each other and coming from a less selfish place. We are one of a whole and this industry depends on all of us. What is the most rewarding aspect of working in esthetics? Seeing the growth and change that has occurred in myself by being so committed to one thing. We’re not just confined to the treatment room anymore and we’re learning new ways to do things because of our community, with so many resources available. Mentoring others using everything I’ve learned and seen over the years is the greatest reward.

es. The other half of the time, I would be in theory classes. That was pretty much my life for almost six months. What are you most excited to learn? I am honestly really excited to work with people with acne prone skin, especially younger people. I’ve been working with my little sister, she’s 14. That and hyperpigmentation, particularly for darker skin. I definitely want to learn more about that to expand my range for everybody.

An Esty’s First Year Journey: January Each month this year, we will chronicle the trials and tribulations of a newly licensed esthetician taking her first steps into the esthetics industry. Without further ado, meet Sofia Montero Rorrer. Hi, Sofia! Can you give us an overview of your background so far? I started cosmetology school last May and it took about five months to complete. I graduated in October. I’ve always known I wanted to do this, ever since I was 16 years old, but my parents wanted me to go to college, so I am also studying nursing. I like doing makeup, and I practice on my friends. I’m actually doing a trial for one of my friends because she’s getting married next year – the bridal and bridesmaids’ makeup. Also, I love to read. What made you decide to become a licensed esthetician? It actually started with makeup when I was 16. I was helping a friend do her makeup because we were going out to dinner, and she didn’t know exactly 36

January2024

how to do it. But, I had been practicing. After I finished, she started crying and said she had never felt this beautiful. That was such an amazing feeling to have. My mom was going to esthetics school at that time. I went to a few classes with her and found it to be really interesting. For me, it’s about making people feel good in their natural beauty, which can be hard to do these days, especially for younger girls. What did the process to get licensed look like? I went to cosmetology school which covered all the bases. They had a skincare program, which took about 260 hours. I went to class at night from 6:0010:00 p.m., since I was also in college during the day. About half that time, I’d be practicing things like facials and lash-

Now that you’re licensed, what type of role are you looking for? Besides being an esthetician, I might want to do lashes, too. I’m thinking about it. I don’t really have a steady hand, so I really have to practice that. Eventually, I want to manage my own space. I know what I want, and I want that creative control. Once I get my nursing license, I want to be able to perform more advanced facials, like you would find in a MedSpa. Do you have any particular areas of interest in the field? I have sensitive skin and rosacea. It’s very hard to find products that don’t irritate my skin. I’d definitely like to touch on the sensitive aspect to find what works best. What are you hoping to achieve during your first year? Honestly, just getting a position in a salon so I can make some money while I keep practicing my skills. My mom wants to work with me in the future, and we have this camper we’d love to renovate into a mobile beauty space. So I’d really love to finish that project so we can work together What are your long-term goals for your esthetics career? I want to be able to run my own business, whether is a spa or even expanding the mobile concept to other places. I do still want to practice, even if I’m in management. Only time will tell!

Can you give a little information about your background as an esthetician? I graduated esthetics school November 2019. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, I've triumphed and continue to provide exceptional services in health and beauty. As a stayat-home mom for the first six years of my son's life, I took a leap of faith and started esthetician school the day after he began kindergarten. After graduating, I immediately embarked on my journey as a solo esthetician. Although the pandemic hit shortly after, I have persevered and am excited to bring my clients the latest in skincare treatments and pampering experiences.

What inspired you to become an esthetician? Finding inspiration from my son and having a passion for making people feel comfortable motivated me to become an esthetician. Being a people pleaser is a tremendous asset in my field that has allowed me to connect with clients, understand their needs, and create a comfortable environment for them during treatments. My empathy and desire to bring comfort to others truly enhances my work. Clients appreciate professionals who not only provide excellent skincare treatments but also create a warm and welcoming atmosphere, making the experience more enjoyable and relaxing. What beauty philosophy do you stand by? Beauty philosophies can vary greatly among individuals. What matters most is finding a philosophy that aligns with your values and supports your journey towards feeling comfortable and confident in your skin. With that said, here are a few that I stand by: individuality, inner health reflects outer beauty, skincare as self-care, adaptability and learning, and balance and moderation.

ents to continue their skincare routines at home. I use ID Skin because of their efficacy and results. It's great to have a skincare brand like ID Skin that you trust and that aligns with the needs of my clients. Consistency in using a particular brand's products often allows me to better understand their formulations, how they interact with different skin types, and how they complement various treatments.

What is your favorite treatment? Dermaplaning facials are fantastic treatments! They offer immediate gratification by exfoliating the skin and removing dead skin cells and vellus hair, leaving the skin smooth, soft, and radiant. The treatment enhances the skin's texture and can make it look brighter almost instantly. My clients love my Dermaplane Facial for the immediate results and the way it allows skincare products to penetrate more effectively post treatment.

What is your secret to beautiful skin Achieving beautiful skin is often a combination of various factors rather than just one secret. This month, our editor Kimberly wanted to find the right treatment to address her dry, sensitive, redness-prone skin. Natalie Diaz, esthetician at Skin Local in Miami, knew just what to do! “I chose the Hydrafacial because it can be customized to meet the needs of sensitive skin. You can adjust the suction so it isn’t too aggressive. It exfoliates the skin which can be great for dryness, and also for clients with rosacea. I also customized it by adding in a nice hydrating and calming mask. My focus was on soothing the skin while making sure it was hydrated,” Diaz explained.
