The

Men Trend All the treatment ideas you need to attract male spa clients by Cheryl Miller

Just about every man is sporting some type of facial hair with the common complaints of dry itchy skin, clogged pores, ingrown hairs, and wrinkles. This expertly developed 10 step, 90 minute Men’s Facelift combines elements of fitness with isotonic and isometric exercises for the muscles of the chest, neck and face, and cross fibers with linear massage techniques and incredible skin care ingredients. Chronic and uncomfortable muscle contractions like tight pecs, platysma and SCM coupled with the added weight of facial hair can drag down features. The goal of the Men’s Facelift is to counteract with this signature “lift and lock” technique that lifts the muscles, fascia, and skin and a “locking technique” that stimulates collagen synthesis to maintain the lift.

skin The Men Trend

Here are some easy and essentail add-on techniques to upsell your basic men’s facial to a five-star Signature Service that appeals to the age management crowd, problematic skin or to those ecofriendly millennials who are there for the experience Men’s facials are on the top ten list of service trends on the rise. If you think men don’t play a vital role in the beauty industry, think again! Here are the top 15 tips for creating and elevating your gentleman’s facial, with easy up-sells and add-on services. 1. Fassage (Facial + Massage) Massage is the number one service requested in the 3.7 trillion dollar global wellness revenue. Facial is second...so why not combine them? Incorporate Swedish or Deep Tissue massage to release overly tight muscles and improve musculoskeletal structural balance and tone, flush lymph, lactic acid and metabolic waste. It is also great for relieving jaw pain, headaches and sinus congestion. Talk to your favorite massage therapist for some great techniques.

14

2. Gua Sha This TCM technique dates back to the Ming Dynasty and is used to stimulate blood flow, lymph, and chi. This technique is used to flush metabolic waste, improve structural balance, stimulate collagen, and accelerate cellular turnover. Guys love this technique...especially when using a warm jade stone. This technique works particularly well for guys with beards. Using a gua sha comb, I like to apply an enzyme to the beard and do gua sha for a very effective exfoliation and to decrease the chance of congestion or folliculitis. This stimulating technique can also encourage new hair growth.

Apply direct pressure over a steam towel to stimulate energy meridians and acupoints and the face and chest. These meridians connect specific organs or networks of organs and can reduce muscle tension, stimulate deconditioned muscles, improved circulation, stimulate endorphins for natural pain relief, relax the central nervous system, improve organs of digestions and decrease headaches. You’re already using a towel to take off product, so add a few pressure points. Little effort, big rewards.

3. Acupressure Steam Towel Treatment This Asian Bodywork therapy had roots in TCM.

4. Back Facial 60 percent of guys with acne on their face also have it on their back and chest. I always recommend this to my

guys getting a back wax to help decrease the chance for ingrown hairs. An easy upsell is to add on a mud mask or enzyme peel. 5.Include “Manscaping” Brows, Nose, Ears and Beard Line This is an easy add-on service to any gentleman’s facial that only takes a few extra minutes. 6. Complimentary Beer or Wine With Foot Soak This upsell service varies from state to state as far as being exempt from obtaining a liquor license, and you aren’t allowed to charge extra for the drinks. With intense competition, clients are being wooed by special perks and free-

bies that offer more bang for the buck. It will also help relax your client a bit if he’s nervous. 7. Indian Scalp Massage There aren’t many things that feel better than a scalp massage. There are amazing benefits like preventing headaches, relieving insomnia and symptoms of anxiety and depression, while boosting memory and helping to promote hair growth. A wonderful variation is to use the gua sha comb tool. 8. Cryotherapy or “Freeze Therapy” This non-invasive, pain free treatment speaks to those with compromised capillaries and or chronically couperose skin. The skin is rapidly cooled using a beam of pressurized liquid nitrogen

vapors on the neck, face and scalp. This vasodilation and constriction provides a vascular flush, stimulates collagen production, aids in decreasing a sunburn, and gives a temporary lifting effect.

and go. As the popularity of mindfulness grows, brain imaging techniques are revealing that this ancient practice can profoundly change the way we see, feel and think.

9. Guided Meditation Originally an ancient Buddist meditation technique, this service speaks to your clients who are looking for the full mind-body experience. Guided Meditation can help you gain a new perspective on stressful situations, increase self-awareness, focus, imagination and patience. If your client is new to this concept, just reassure them that focus on the words is not required; they can just focus on being aware of the present moment and simply noticing feelings and thoughts as they come

10. High Frequency Comb Invented by Nikola Tesla, High Frequency has been around since the 1800’s. This totally safe, gentle and non-intrusive modality is great for everyone, but using the high frequency comb for skin rejuvenation, renewal of skin cells, penetration of skin care products, oxygenation and toning of the skin and improving micro-circulation is perfect men with beards. The comb easily penetrates through the hair and allows that often neglected skin to recieve anti-aging benefits. LNEonline.com

skin The Men Trend 11. Offer Ecofriendly, Natural or Organic Products Now more than ever, it’s easy to look amazing while going green with sustainably-sourced, plant-derived, non-toxic, cruelty-free products from wind powered factories that practice fair trade and use recyclable or refillable packaging. Know your audience. 12. Warm Stone Facial Ideal for men who feel cold daily and have problems with circulation. Hematite works well for this technique since it is a dense stone that will hold the temperature longer. Hematite can also help decrease pain in the body and is said to help with headaches and insomnia. Warm smooth stones work well to soften the appearance of deep lines or repetitive motion wrinkles. It vasodilates to stimulate circulation, firm, tone, flush excess fluid and eliminate toxins. The ideal temperature for this treatment is 94 degrees. 13. Energy Facelift This energetic facelift not only affects your face but can also help improve the overall quality of life. Energy healing

of the body has been around for thousands of years, but not many healing practitioners use these techniques for rejuvenation of the face. This modality works on the premise of reducing the underlying stress that causes wrinkles on the face. If something is not right internally, it shows on the face. The face conveys every pleasure, misery, anxiety, or worry. A variety of tools can be used for this service, from pendulums, to chakra stones, color or sound therapy, reiki, and tuning forks. 14. Package Deals Men’s facials take just as long and use that same amount of products as any other facial, so set your prices competitively. Upselling a single men’s facial to a package deal and pre-booking your next appointment with an optional upgrade to an enzyme, peel or microdermabrasion is a great way to increase your bottom line. 15. Face/Ear/Hand/Foot Reflexology Reflexology is a wonderful complementary therapy that anyone can do. This easy to learn technique has three

amazing benefits: promotes homeostasis, relaxes, and increases circulation and clears blocked energy pathways. Meridian points in the face, feet, hands, and ears are believed to correspond to the various meridians that affect a specific organ, gland or part of the body. By activating these points with direct pressure, it is believed to help with pain, circulation, anxiety, insomnia, low energy, sluggish bowels, and sallow skin tone. It helps to improve organ function, detoxification, migraines and sexual appetite. The slow rhythmic flow of this technique makes it incredibly relaxing with so many benefits.

On The Front Lines Why estheticians are the first line of defense against skin cancer

by Yvette Williams

The American Cancer Association released its 2018 Cancer Facts and Figures report in February, detailing the anticipated number of skin cancer diagnoses for the year. It projected 178,560 new cases of melanoma in the United States, and 91,270 of those cases are expected to be invasive. Although May is Melanoma Awareness Month, every day of every month should be important to beauty professionals. Trained eyes save lives. No one comes closer to the skin than estheticians, and it’s the mission of Eyes on Cancer to ensure that they are paying attention to identify early-stage skin cancer.

skin On The Front Lines

Eyes On Estheticians Google defines estheticians as people who are knowledgeable about the nature and appreciation of beauty, especially in art. The Fosters, through Eyes On Cancer, believe estheticians are more than that and do more than appreciate the obvious. Much like dermatologists who specialize in skin care, estheticians are passionate about the health and integrity of their clients’ skin and offer procedures and products that help improve their appearance. In many cases, clients see estheticians and other beauty professionals more often than their doctors and there’s a level of trust. As a result, estheticians are easily their first line of defense in spotting skin abnormalities that present as the beginning stages of skin cancer. So, what better way to forge an even stronger connection with them than by getting trained and certified to spot skin cancer? The average beauty professional has the potential to see 120 cases of skin cancer throughout their career. Estheticians are in the right place to see something, say something and ultimately save lives. Eyes On Cancer has positioned itself to produce programs that focus on identifying potential cancers before they advance to the point of metastasis and empower the professional to help save lives.

The Earlier The Better The skin cancer training through Eyes On Cancer certifies professionals to spot early signs of melanoma on the scalp, neck and face which may not be recognized as problematic by the untrained client eye. Through early detection, a client’s chances of having to endure disease-related changes affecting their body image and physical appearance as well as their spiritual, psychological and social well being is significantly decreased. Risks of scarring and harm obviously exists, but if the cancer is found early through visual

inspection, the odds of cure are substantially greater. “Identifying skin cancer in an early stage dramatically improves the prognosis,” explained Jeanne Braa Foster, a retired platform artist for Paul Mitchell who, with her husband Dr. Dean Foster, started the foundation in 2014 after he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. “Melanoma has increased 300 percent in recent years. Our course focuses on visual awareness because beauty professionals are visual people. That’s how they learn. And that’s why they are perfect partners to their clients in spotting abnormalities.”

Skin Cancer Facts The three most common types of skin cancers are Basal Cell Carcinoma, which spreads locally but is treatable; Squamous Cell Carcinoma, also spreads locally and is treatable; and Malignant Melanoma, which can be deadly if caught late. Melanoma is a nondiscriminatory and deadly disease and isn’t relegated to the old and elderly as some might assume. It can strike anyone, at any age. Left untreated, it can advance rapidly, spreading to other parts of the body through the lymphatic system or bloodstream. Several factors increase the chance for melanoma, including an

overabundance of moles, family history, fair skin, frequent sunburns, and overexposure to the sun, especially during the hottest time of day. Studies indicate that just one severe sunburn may increase the risk of developing melanoma by as much as 50 percent, with cumulative sun exposure carrying even more risk.

An Ounce Of Prevention Is Worth A Pound Of Cure “You’ve got to go to the doctor and get it checked out!” was ultimately the battle cry that caused Dean to see his physician. Jeanne was quite insistent, not wanting to lose him to something that was potentially preventable. Men, whether because of the male bravado or macho-man persona they’re expected to assume, ignore health issues more often than women and brush them off as nothing, assuming whatever it is will eventually go away. But Jeanne remained persistent, knowing it was incumbent upon her to make sure Dean would not delay being seen longer than it would take for him to admit something was wrong. He eventually acquiesced, saw his doctor and was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Thankfully, caught early enough and treated, Dean is now free from the same disease that took the life of Jeanne’s

skin On The Front Lines mentor and business associate Paul Mitchell who died from pancreatic cancer. It is clear Jeanne’s experience with two very important men in her life battling cancer diagnoses played a significant role in her passion to do something in retirement that would benefit both the beauty industry and people she loves. A firm believer that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, Jeanne, combined with Dean’s background and expertise as a physician, created the perfect blend of medicine and beauty to form Eyes On Cancer. Recognizing that late detection of deadly diseases like cancer lead to the reduction in quality of living and life expectancy as well as preventable suffering, Eyes On Cancer produces educational programs that are preemptive without being reactionary.

See Something, Say Something Eyes On Cancer’s training focuses on early detection with the goal of helping the learner recognize skin abnormalities in their earliest state so that treatment, if required, is less invasive. The foundation encourages estheticians and beauty professionals alike to be aware of the early signs of the disease by being trained and certified to spot irregularities on their clients. The Eyes On Cancer skin cancer certification program is an industry-wide cause and responsibility, and as estheticians, it’s critical to say something if you see something. Unlike most other teachings, the EOC certification course teaches estheticians what skin cancer looks like in its earliest state and provides instructions on how to speak with clients about what you see in a professional fashion. The course in no way endorses the process of diagnosis and treatment, but rather instructs you to refer clients to their physician for evaluation, consequently eliminating any risk for malpractice concerns or lawsuits.

To date, more than 7700 professionals have been trained and certified through Eyes On Cancer’s skin cancer certification course. Estheticians and spas that haven’t already done so are encouraged to join the mission to stomp out skin cancer by completing the training. Early detection often makes a difference between cure and no cure. Ultimately that’s the goal of Eyes on Cancer: the more beauty professionals trained equates to more lives saved. It’s the Foster’s hope that by 2020, they will have trained 20,000 beauty professionals. Yvette Williams, Director of Educational Programs with Eyes On Cancer, is known for her affinity of the beauty industry, making her goal to expand the outreach and education of the beauty industry and move forward the foundation’s mission to stomp out skin cancer through training beauty professionals.

A little bit of luxury for everyday life

SPA OF THE MONTH

By Cristina Beecham

It is summer in Ann Arbor, and though most of the city’s undergraduate population has returned home for the warmer months of the year, those lucky enough to experience a Michigan summer are also privy to spend their time off at the city’s most exclusive salon and spa. Look no further than the center of Main Street for Lily Grace Cosmetics, a boutique spa stocking its shelves with premium brands where guests can indulge in the ultimate luxury of both advanced facial treatments and a guided, personalized retail experience. Born of owner Cyndi Clark’s experience and imagination and named after her granddaughter, Lily Grace offers advanced skin care technology, specialty and natural skin care brands, fragrance, and home care; all tied together with navy and cream bags, boxes and bows.

spa Spa of the Month

Signature Treatment Printed on beautifully textured paper with Lily Grace’s signature luxury appeal, the spa menu is carefully curated with the most beautiful and effective facials. Their crown jewel facial experience is the Diamond Life Infusion Ritual (90 minutes, $290). This innovative treatment aims to reverse skin aging while lifting and perfecting the appearance of skin. Spa owner Cyndi Clark explains the advanced facial protocol: “We start with a luxurious cleansing ritual, followed by a triple exfoliation of glycol acid, along with other AHAs and carboxitherapy. Next, the client enjoys a relaxing Shirodhara and lifting, firming and sculpting myofascial massage. A highly effective concentrate is applied to regulate bio-markers in the skin, and an exclusive luminous gold and pearl nourishing mask is applied before the finishing, luminous sun protection with SPF 50.” The benefits of this treatment include “exceptional global rejuvenation; luminous, revitalized skin; and filled and prevented fine lines.” This treatment is also available as a series (six treatments, $1,440) and the results are cumulative after each session.

Marketing As an experienced vice president of sales and marketing, Cyndi Clark has developed her brand’s footprint as “a luxury skin care and cosmetics retail store first, with a luxury spa for [its] clients.” Lily Grace uses a diverse array of marketing initiatives, such as “both retail and spa data to email and communicate to [their] clients for special promotions.” Regular clients with a purchase pattern towards specific brands are likely to receive a personal call from Cyndi, lending them a warm invitation to their favorite brand’s upcoming facial or retail event at Lily Grace. Events are a mainstay in the boutique’s strategy for connecting with and giving back to their cherished clients. 28

Cyndi Clark describes: “We hold special events two times a year with our professional service brands like Tata Harper, Natura Bisse and Darphin to build the brand awareness and attract new clients for spa services. Our brands send in national estheticians who work closely with brand owners for multiple day facial events.” The Lily Grace website and social media platforms, mainly Facebook and Instagram, are consistently updated with educational and promotional material, as well as highlights about events. The spa sends out two different monthly email blasts every two and a half weeks. One is event driven; and the second, named LilyPad, showcases new product launches and education.

Training “We train all the time!” says spa owner Cyndi. “Each brand updates their facial protocols two times a year, and

we learn all the new massage techniques and ingredients. They are twoday hands on trainings with the brand’s trainer. We also send our estheticians to the brand’s facilities for special training. Lily Grace also strives to “update [their] trainings according to new service trends.” Recently, Lily Grace staff trained in lash lift using keratin that lasts for three months. Cyndi explains that this lift is “healthier than a lash perm that I only good up to four weeks.” Cyndi says she is “always searching for better ways to serve our clients. All our estheticians are certified in microcurrent, LED light therapy, and reflexology.” Lily Grace also features one medical esthetician certified in dermaplaning. Cyndi believes that, as a spa owner, it is her “job to offer additional education and new certifications for [her] team to build their individual portfolios.” Staff performance is reviewed quarterly. As a team, they discuss their over-

Special Events and Promotions As mentioned, Lily Grace is big on events. Cyndi maps out events well in advance, explaining, “We have our events mapped out for the year. We plan marketing, sales, appointment goals, inventory, and event set-up in meetings six months out. We start marketing and list events on our website two months out. We start booking four weeks out for the event. Whether you are the proud owner of a several thousand square-foot spa, or the go-getting renter of an independent treatment room, your dĂŠcor speaks volumes about how invested you are in your clients' experience. No matter your budget, you should feel empowered to spice up your spa with intention. From bed sheets to hand-towels and waiting room pillows, your dĂŠcor should feel purposeful and fresh. Updating your theme with seasonal touches is an out-loud way of telling your clients that you are current and you care about your spa's environment. Here are some easy, budget-friendly ideas for bringing the beach to your spa this summer:

Get Sensual Clients will remember what they hear, see, taste, touch, and smell during their visit to your establishment. Use these five senses as a guide to seasonal updates. Include at least one new sensation or experience for each of the five senses to ensure your client receives a clear message that you are on top of your seasonal spa game. Hear Every season has a sound. Tune in and listen up to the sounds of summer! Ebbing and flowing waves and chirping seabirds are just a few of the notes of sweet summer music. Change up your treatment room mix with a fresh, summery playlist that transports your client to the beach during their facial, massage, or body treatment. Soft, crashing waves create a rhythmic and relaxing atmosphere for a pampering massage. The sound of a fresh sea breeze and gulls is an energizing accompaniment for brightening body scrubs and cooling, post-sun facials.

The Internet is your oyster! Simply do a video search or download a pre-made playlist from your favorite providers for free! There's no excuse for skipping over this spa music makeover for summer. See No matter how luxurious or in-theme your spa décor is, clients can become bored or desensitized to the time, effort and money you put into your throw pillows and candle holders. This is why it is so important to switch it up visually for summer. Throwing in a new area rug or a festive poster will make your clients stop and say, "Hey, that's new!" Create a Pinterest board for summer and get to pinning some vacation inspo! Light, fresh colors like white and turquoise are great accent colors to any furniture you might already have. The best part about seasonal updates is that you don't have to go crazy! A jar of seashells here and a beach-y photo there make a huge difference when invoking summer memories for your clients.

Here are some summery accents you can find at any craft or home store: • Clear vases with seashells • Boardwalk-style wood shelving or accents • Imagery including lighthouses, boats, beaches, bicycles, sunshine, sandals and the seaside • Colorful beach towels to roll up and stack in the treatment room • Nautical rope to line the reception desk • Lanterns to create soft lighting in the treatment room with a nautical vibe • Lay seashells on the counter for a fun surprise when guests checkout Choosing new linens is also a good idea for summer. If your regular theme includes rich, plush fabrics like velvet in purple and burgundy hues, you might want to switch the heavy blankets to lightweight throws in colors like white, cream, and baby blue. Keep in mind the temperature change for a practical way to choose your color scheme. If you have several treatment rooms, new lin-

ens might be an investment. But if well-cared for, a summer set and winter set of sheets and towels will last for years. Taste Everyone can use a little extra hydration during the summer. You instruct your clients to drink lots of water after a detoxifying treatment, but why not get them started while they're still under your roof? Offering seasonal spa waters is a healthy and fun way to get in that hydration while bringing home the summer feel. Fresh fruits like mango, pineapple, and watermelon are pops of color in a clear water jug. Add some cute mini umbrellas for that extra touch that clients will remember for the rest of their vacay. See the Summer Wellness Trends article for more in-depth instruction on how to take Haute Hydration to the next level!

up your spa for every season to come. Rain or shine, your clients should see your spa as an escape from pre-vacation stress and post-vacation blues. Brighten up their day with new sights, sounds, feelings, tastes and smells for them to discover and play with this season. Kristina Mazzenga received her bachelor's degree in Broadcasting Communication, Journalism and Social Media Marketing from Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, PA. She can be reached at attitudeofthemind@gmail.com or on Instagram at @miss_kristina_.

Touch Of all the senses, touch might be the one you think is your job. After all, the esthetician is the one who applies the product, massages it in, and rinses it away. But don't miss this chance to instill this important sensory memory in your client that will keep them coming back. Offering take-home products is a great way to plant a sensation in your client's mind that will keep them coming back to see you again before the summer months are through. Offer a summer goodie bag with sunscreen samples, spa water recipe cards and some cute seashells for guests to take with them on the way out. You can even use this as an incentive for clients to pre-book their next treatment. Invite clients to see you again after their vacation so you can rollback any sun damage or windblown dryness they might accumulate. Offer this free summer goodie bag as a thank you for trusting their pre and post vacation care to you.

Smell What's one thing clients cherish most about the spa? It smells like a spa! While lavender and incense might be warming, sensual scents for the winter, eucalyptus, coconut, and citrus will get the senses energized for summer! Skip the candles and opt for a diffuser to maximize the scent without raising the temperature during warmer months. Look for essential oil blends with salty essences that will transport clients to the beach as they breathe in that fresh, ocean air. For an extra touch, light a salt lamp to increase the positive ions in the air. Even though it doesn't emit a scent, clients will feel the energy of the ocean as they inhale the diffused scent for total immersion. Make It Happen Add a line for seasonal updates to your budget and business plan. Even the most successful luxury spas need an update every so often. Main Stage The build-up of excitement surrounding this year’s keynote speakers was unleashed at the Main Stage. Attendees anxiously awaited the congress host, Michelle D’AllairdBrenner, and found their seats early before her welcoming message. “Believe” and “Passion” were the conference words this year, and Michelle embodied that message with enthusiasm and wisdom as she imparted her own passion for this industry on every audience member. As an educator and esthetics school owner, Michelle connected with students in the audience and sparked their growing excitement as they embark on their skin care journeys. From happiness experts to major brand executives and educators, LNE & Spa’s featured speakers were blown away by the energy and eagerness to hear what they had to say as they looked out into the sea of audience members before them. Attendees gathered at the bottom of the stage to meet their favorite industry experts following their presentations for more in-depth, one-onone education.

Conferences This year’s congress breakthrough star speaker, Nicck Townsend, hosted the Makeup Conference where he demonstrated expert brow techniques and makeup tips for aging skin. Attendees followed him from the Main Stage to the classroom where they spent quality time learning from the Brow King. Aside from makeup skills and brow instruction, Nicck shared his path to success and was a mentor to aspiring brow and makeup artists in the room. Social media expert Kristina Mazzenga led the Marketing Conference, along with Maxine Drake, Lori Crete, and Louis Silberman, after making her Main Stage debut. Her contagious smile excited attendees to re-think and re-strategize their social media initiatives. Industry leaders Maxine Drake and Lori Crete brought their A-game with outstanding lectures on growing your business and becoming an unstoppable force. Happiness expert and movement motivator Petra Kolber brought fun-loving energy to the Main Stage and Wellness Conferences this year. Attendees were excited to see her familiar face and meet their favorite inspirational speaker, author, and podcast creator. The excitement was mutual, and Petra gained new inspiration from our industry that she is taking with her to Long Beach and Miami.

• What got you started in the esthetics business? Ok, don’t judge but...it wasn’t “love for skin” that’s for sure. I know...shocking! But I do love helping people feel better about themselves. I had been a massage therapist for a very long time and it was taking a toll on my body. I saw the opportunity in esthetics and the ability to serve others. Once I started helping others, it was then that I fell in love.

reject me, while others took me up on my offer. It was definitely a numbers game but I remained positive.

• How did you grow your client base? Thinking outside the box. I grew a base of 300 clients in under a year by offering free brow waxes and converting them to paying clients. I would approach strangers with this offering. Some would

• Was it difficult to transition out of being a service provider to being a consultant? Not at all. You would think it might be. The truth is, my clients are estheticians now, and how I communicate and build trust is still the same. I care about each

• What was your favorite thing about working with clients? The relationships for sure! Clients become like extended family members, no doubt. I am still friends with many of my clients today even though I am no longer in the treatment room.

and every one of my esthetician clients just as I did with my skin clients. If anything, I know and understand what they are feeling before they do. • How did you decide to begin coaching other estheticians and spa owners? Funny thing is, many industry colleagues encouraged me to create business and marketing material for estheticians. I started building content and my first product: The Esthetician Business Essentials Course” was born. It was an esthetician business in a box. I kept creating learning programs and blogging, and then many estheticians and spa owners reached out to me for one on one coaching. • Is coaching more rewarding than being in the treatment room? How does it feel to help other estheticians, versus helping clients? Coaching estheticians is more rewarding on some levels because I have a deeper understanding. Because of the 30 years of experience, I can connect with them no matter what the circumstance, challenge, or problem - because I’ve been there. I’ve lived it. I’ve cried. I’ve laughed. I’ve rejoiced. I’ve learned. I’ve celebrated. Each scenario I face with an owner, I can relate to. Because of that, it is more rewarding.

• What is one piece of advice you have to someone struggling with their skin care business? Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Many times we are too proud to ask for help when we need it most, but it is the very thing we need to do. You can’t build your business alone. I couldn’t when I was a spa owner with employees, especially since I was still in the treatment room. • How do you keep the good ideas coming? What is your secret to staying productive and creative? I am such a believer in spending time in solitude. This is where creativity flows. I come up with my best ideas during that quiet time. We live in such an age of distraction. There is so much noise. Everyone wants a chunk of our time. I believe in scheduling time on our calendar for quiet time.

not a judgment. Living a world-class life is a choice. We all have choices. I wrote a blog article on how to become an Elite Esthetician. This is a good place to start! I listed 50 things that a person can begin doing right now to create positive change. • What are your current business goals? My latest project is the Beauty Business Summit happening in Hawaii this October. I have gathered top industry leaders to share their knowledge for two days on the beautiful island of Oahu. 100 percent of the proceeds will be gifted to a beauty school. This is my way of giving back to our industry while staying true to my own business goals.

• Do you think all estheticians are capable of becoming worldclass service providers? I believe all estheticians are capable - yes. But will all estheticians become world-class service providers? No. It’s

• What has been your greatest success as a mentor? The wins! That’s the easy answer, but it’s not entirely accurate. I do celebrate when my clients have a winning year. When they are more profitable than the previous year. That always feels good. I may have inspired them - but they did it. What I consider the greatest success is when a person has a deeper understanding of who they are because of our work together.

Summer

Marketing

Tips

Keep your books full this vacation season by Amy Carter

Keeping our chairs and treatment rooms full presents a challenge in any season, and summer is a special case. Ensuring it’s a season of flourishing finances can be difficult as we juggle the shifting vacation schedules of clients and team members; but it can be done. I know. As the owner of Solaris Aveda Salon and Spa, I’ve witnessed our bookings dip with summer, and as the cofounder, owner and head coach at Empowering You, I’ve seen our clients hit this same slump. In my business and as a consultant and coach, I’ve found ways to combat the summer slowdown and grow.

Facebook Promotions We are big on Facebook promotions. Solaris announces specials, flash sales and events on our Facebook page, and we are always happy when our clients tag us in their new-do selfies. Likewise, Empowering You uses Facebook to celebrate the accomplishments of our coaching clients, from those little victories they achieve to the classes, weekend intensives, webinars and Facebook Live training sessions we do. Your salon should do the same. But you already encourage your clients to tag you; you share your specials and events; and you have a half dozen albums showing off your best work.

business Summer Marketing Tips

Advertising Advantage Facebook is good for more than just that type of promotion, it’s a powerful advertising tool; and in summer, target ads posted on Facebook can drive business to your salon from new clients, clients who have drifted away and even visitors (especially true if you’re in a summer destination). Facebook’s advertising tools allow you to target ads to very specific audiences, so for a small investment you can ensure your ad will show up on your desired client’s feed. In the ad-building tool, you pinpoint your audience via the pages they’ve liked, their interests, even their geolocation (a fancy way of saying where they are). Imagine an ad promoting your exclusive line of summer skin care and sun protection products to Facebook users who are females between the ages of 25-45 and who like boating, the beach, a luxury magazine, your salon (or a competitor’s salon) and the brand of your skin care and sun protection line, and only paying for your ad to go to those specific clients. You can further refine your ad targets by zip code; hit your desired income range by pointing your ad toward parents who have liked schools in well-to-do districts or neighborhood with high home values; or who like luxury products like car, clothing, jewelry or handbag brands; or who like certain ritzy vacation destinations. With a clever ad and a compelling offer, you’ll convert customers. On the Facebook note, one way to reach your current fanbase and create content for your website or YouTube channel is to create videos demonstrating the proper use of sun and skin care products. Tell what to use, how to use it and demonstrate. It’s a great, costeffective way to promote your product lines, season-specific services, sales and specials.

Get Seasonal Season-specific specials, for summer or any time of year, should focus on providing your clients with services that address both seasonal concerns and 42

the client’s specific beauty goals. For summer, this means working to prepare for time in the sun and time on the water (whether it’s a pool, the lake, the beach…) and offering services to remediate any issues that arise with sun exposure or with the impact salt and chlorine have on the skin and hair. Every area has nuances – seaside salons will naturally focus more on treatments to guard against salt damage where this is less of a concern for landlocked areas where the lake is the big draw – and you’ll tailor your specials to fit your region and your clientele, but generally, summer specials should include: • Skin Care: masks, peels and exfoliation treatments and at-home products; SPF-enriched products like moisturizer and makeup, especially lip protection; soothing skin products that can take the sting out of sunburn and help the skin heal faster • Hair Care: deep conditioning treatments and at-home products; in-salon treatment packages to help protect or revitalize UVA/UVB, salt or chlorine-damaged hair

• Color Treatments: in-salon services and at-home products that will help colored and highlighted hair stay true despite the abuse of UV rays and chlorine/salt damage; a mid-summer pick me up: quick touch ups to keep color looking strong Of course, any time you can offer a package of complete care, it makes looking good, feeling good and keeping healthy hair and skin easy for your clients, so wrap up your summer skin and hair treatments into convenient packages and promote them before the season starts and well into the season.

Package Deal This goes for treatment packages as well as product packages. Picture the showcase spot in your retail area: rows of kid’s plastic beach pails packed with everything from your standard SPF lotion to moisturizer, makeup and lippy that are all SPF-rich; all you need is a fun name and a good price point and they will fly off the shelves. Now picture your menu. Here, you’ve included your Say Hello To Summer package: a wash, trim and deep conditioning ser-

vice suite that will prep your clients’ hair for long days in the sun at the beach, on the boat or by the pool. Likewise ,your School’s Out For Summer package: trendy summery cuts, sun-friendly highlights, and a take-home deep conditioning product (offer discounts to educators and recent grads for an extra kick).

Mid Summer Refresh Service specials like these cater to the beginning of summer, but you can easily craft service and product packages for mid summer and for the end of the summer, but don’t forget to give clients the ability to upgrade and purchase a full summer service suite that combines elements of each set of ser44

vices or products and keep their look fresh from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Packages like this could include: • Summer Splash: a quick trim and a touch of color to keep you looking sharp (mid-summer) • Dog Days of Summer: partner with a mobile pet groomer and offer buy-one-get-one cuts for mom and the pooch (mid-summer) • Frizz Patrol: an in-salon anti-frizz treatment (perfect for humid climates) and suite of products designed to help fight the frizz (good any time) • The Last Hurrah: an end-of-summer special designed to reinvigorate tired hair and lackluster color, all while prepping your client for their big Labor Day soirees (end of summer)

• Sassy Summer: this would combine elements of your specials for each phase of summer or could be a complete suite of treatments and products Keep in mind that your specials can and should have retail components as well, if not a full-on retail focus. Not only do your clients want products that address summer issues (from frizzy hair to sun damage to deep conditioning), but they need them as well if they want to keep their look all season long.

orous nails or brows, or their flawless skin or makeup can be as grand or as simple as you like. For a grand solution have a custom backdrop made, similar to what you see on a red carpet: a floor-to-ceiling drape with the name of your salon and your logo, maybe a hashtag, featured prominently so that it’s in every picture. For a subtle solution, try a simple mirror sticker, something you can put at every station or at a dedicated mirror; just be sure it’s large enough to show your name and logo, but small enough to keep the mirror clutter free. A static cling-style sticker is a great option as the price point is affordable but it peels easily off windows and mirrors when the season or special has run its course.

Start by pushing for a big giveaway. One thing we do at my salon and that I encourage my Empowering You family to do is go big or go home. My salon offers free services for a year to clients who bring in referrals. Now, “free services” has a limit – typically a $500 value – but you could and should make yours fit your salon and clientele by playing with the free services you’re offering. It works like this: refer a new client and you’ll receive the typical reward (a discount on your next service, in our case), but you’re also entered into a drawing for the big prize. No limits on how many entries you can get in the drawing, so long as you get one per new client you bring in. It’s a smash hit with our clients and our Empowering You folks who do this also report high numbers of new clients added to the books. Combine this with other aggressive modifications to your loyalty program – think a free treatment after seven visits instead of 10, or a retail discount after you spend $80 instead of $100 – and you have the recipe for a meaningful boost to your bottom line.

Brighten & Rejuvenate with Plant Meristematic Cells Extract

Keep It Fun One last thing. While you’re running all these specials, why not install a summer selfie station in your salon and keep promoting the great work you’re doing? Making a place where your clients can snap a shot of their perfect do, their glam-

your marketing savvy to ensure this is a season of profits, not losses. Why online reviews are the best free advertising by Andy Curry

Can you imagine having an army of people whose sole mission is to persuade spa and skin care customers to do business with you? What’s more, what if the sales army did it for no cost? Furthermore, what if they never slept and kept on doing it for you 24 hours a day. What if their persuasive power was so intense, they had the power to easily convince customers to do business with you? I’m describing a marketing tactic that perhaps you’re either not using at all or you don’t exploit it like you should. If you are using it correctly, then kudos to you! At times when I reveal what the tactic is, some people’s reactions are “Oh…that.” However, when I do a spot check, I find that the skin care businesses and spas who don’t get excited about the tactic are the ones not using it enough or at all. These are the same folks who have gaping holes in their profit potential.

business Always Online

Power In Numbers So what is this mystery marketing tactic? It is online reviews. The most pervasive of online reviews are done with Google. When reviews first came out, many business owners saw it as another pain-in-the-backside thing they had to add to their already busy schedule. Yet what you really have with this is your own private version of America’s premiere referral service. It’s a gift from Google and a very valuable one. I’ll venture to guess you have used online reviews to help you decide if you should or should not do business with the merchant you were considering. Just from looking at those reviews, you were convinced to call the business or someone else. Think about the power in that!

The Good With The Bad That said, let’s look at ways you can embrace your reviews and leverage them for more clients. The first thing to know is when you get a negative review, it takes ten positive reviews to 48

offset the impact. Without question, your business will get negative reviews. They come from unscrupulous competitors who want to hurt you, bad apple customers who just like to be unhappy and good customers who you inadvertently upset and want you to make it right. This is reality. The good thing is there are methods to turn terrible reviews into glowing reviews. Even if the reviewer wanted to give you a minus rating (which isn’t possible), you can turn it around and shine like a new car.

Anything Less Than The Best… Moving forward, you must have a fivestar mindset for your business. When you check your reviews everyday (yes, everyday) and you discover anything less than five-stars, I want you to get uncomfortable. Your customer’s expectation was not met and therefore, neither was yours. I want you to set up a system in your business for collecting

reviews when your customer or client is in your place. People can leave reviews with their phones and on computers, but just because they have a phone doesn’t mean they will leave a review. Thus, have a computer in your business where they can privately write a review right after the transaction. Do your best to get them doing a review before leaving your establishment. If necessary, shove a gift in their hand to guilt them into writing one now. Did I say “guilt them into writing one”? Yes. It’s a powerful psychological trigger discovered by Robert Cialdini known as reciprocation. When you give something to someone, they feel obligated to give back to you. Now, before you move in for the kill to get your review from the customer, ask yourself how the transaction is going. If it feels good and you think the customer is at a five-star place in their mind, then start a casual conversation about Gmail. You must know if they

As you’re nearing the final stages of the transaction, be blunt and ask how they would rate you. Is it fivestars? If not, then dig your heels in ask what else you need to do to create a five-star experience for them. Then do it. Again, the power of reciprocation will kick in and they will help you with what you want.

No Shortcuts Now here’s something not to do. Years ago, I was doing the marketing for one of the biggest and most well-known companies in my area. They had a

Facebook page they were managing. They kept asking me how they should get more reviews. I explained to them what you now know. They grew impatient and took a short cut that hurt them. One day, they asked their Facebook fans to leave a positive review on Google in exchange for a $25 gift card. As you can imagine, this was going to cost the company some serious cash. Within eight hours, the company received around 125 reviews. Most were positive. Yet, not all were. In fact, I remember reading a review of those 125 that said (paraphrased): “It’s unbelievable that this company would bribe their Facebook fans into leaving a good review for $25, whether or not we’ve done business with them. I give

It’s not your typical “they made me mad” review. Other customers seeing this may have easily been persuaded to call someone else. After all, people believe reviews because they know reviews can’t normally be gamed.

business Always Online With no foresight to consequences, this could get your local news doing a story on you and how you manipulate the system. Can you imagine that happening to you? Fortunately, this client didn’t get caught up in that scenario but this bad review was out there for anyone to see. What’s more, when you look at this batch of reviews, they were all created the same day. If you were deciding whether or not to call them, what would be your thought if you saw that? I’d think something was fishy and I wouldn’t trust it. If I wouldn’t trust it, I’d probably not call them and find someone else I can trust. Again, that’s how powerful reviews are. I was sure Google would penalize this company for getting so many reviews so quickly. I checked it for weeks and there seemed to be little or no effect. Months later I checked it and it appeared those reviews were stripped out. That’s another bad sign because if a previous customer saw those many reviews, now they see a third of what was there. That looks suspicious. Again, if it’s suspicious, would you call them?

Ride THE

Heat Wave Prevent sunburns this summer with updated SPF education by Tricia Trimble Did you know that up to 90 percent of visible skin aging is caused by sun damage? Or that one in five people get some form of skin cancer in their lifetime? If your clients want to keep their skin youthful and protect themselves from skin cancer, doesn’t it make logical sense to wear sunscreen? Well, yes, but then... did you know that recent studies indicate many sunscreens can cause endocrine disruption and harm the wildlife in our ocean? And on top of that, approximately 95 percent of people are vitamin D deficient and being in the sun is what your body needs to create Vitamin D.

Summer Craze Guide

With all of this contradictory information, what are you supposed to do? In this article, it is my intention to share with you what I know about sunscreen in hopes that it will help you and your clients stay safe in the sun because a lot of skin cancer and premature aging can be prevented with education, awareness, and an easy to apply product called sunscreen...but not just any sunscreen, one carefully crafted with safe and effective ingredients.

What is sunscreen? We all know that it’s the white creamy stuff (and sometimes tinted) that our parents were always yelling at us to put on before we left the house. But, have you ever wondered how it actually works? Sunscreens are filters of UV energy. They are used to filter out a portion of the sun’s UVA and UVB rays before they penetrate your skin and cause damage.

Do sunscreens block out all UV rays? No, sunscreens are filters, not “blocks.” All sunscreens let some UV radiation through at varying rates indicated by the SPF number. This is why the term “sunblock” is prohibited for use by the FDA.

What is the difference between UVA rays and UVB rays? UVA light rays are long wavelength (320 – 400 nm) light rays and can penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin. Unprotected exposure to these rays can lead to premature skin aging (aka: photoaging) and wrinkling and may initiate the development of skin cancers. UVA rays are present during all daylight hours all months of the year and can penetrate through glass and clouds. UVB light rays are the mid-range wavelength (290 – 320 nm) light rays and are responsible for tanning or burning the super cial layers of your skin. They also play a key role in the development of skin cancer. These rays are 56

June2018

strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. An easy way to remember the difference between the two types of UV rays is to think of “A” for Aging and “B” for Burning.

ated with aging and skin cancer, it is very important that you choose a sunscreen with “Broad Spectrum” protection or else you will only be protected from UVB rays.

What does SPF mean and why is it important to know?

Chemical (organic) & Mineral (inorganic) sunscreens, explained:

SPF (Sun Protection Factor) indicates how long you can stay in the sun without burning from UVB light rays. SPF does NOT indicate any protection from the damaging UVA rays. For example, an SPF 30 product allows 1/30th of the sun- burning UV radiation energy through to your skin versus wearing no sunscreen at all. Wearing an SPF 30 product will give you 30 times the protection before burning takes place. An SPF 15 product blocks about 94 percent of UVB rays; an SPF 30 product blocks about 97 percent of UVB rays; and an SPF 45 product blocks about 98 percent of those rays. Most dermatologists recommend an SPF of 30 because the difference in protection above that is minimal, especially considering no SPF number will block out 100 percent of the rays.

What does “Broad Spectrum” mean and why should you look for it on your sunscreen bottle? The term “Broad Spectrum” indicates that the sunscreen protects you from UVA rays. Since UVA rays are associ-

When you see the term “organic”, don’t be fooled. Sunscreens contain filters that either reflect or absorb UV rays, and there are two main types: organic and inorganic. Understanding the difference between these two categories often proves tricky for most consumers who believe that the label “organic” (usually indicated by a USDA organic symbol in the food industry) denotes a healthy, safe product containing limited or no pesticides. However, when used in reference to sunscreens, the term organic can often mean something entirely different. It simply indicates that a substance contains carbon. Chemical (organic) Sunscreen Organic sunscreens absorb UV radiation and convert it into heat. Organic sunscreens contain one or more of the following ingredients: oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate, octinoxiate. Mineral (inorganic) Sunscreen Inorganic sunscreens (aka “ChemicalFree”, Natural Sunscreen) reflect and

Summer Craze Guide

It is antiseptic, astringent and absorbs moisture, which makes it particularly good for severe eczema. It also helps the skin stay dry when exposed to alkaline liquids – which is why it’s used in diaper rash cream. Additionally, it is approved by the FDA as a Category I skin protectant and is used as a soothing preparation for facial redness and steroid-induced thinning of the epidermis.

How long will it take for you to burn if you are wearing sunscreen? scatter UV radiation. They contain zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide as the active ingredients.

Why choose a mineral (inorganic) sunscreen? Mineral sunscreens are typically less irritating to skin and are considered safer than organic sunscreens. Chemical sunscreens have a higher rate of allergic reactions in users and the possibility of the compound being disruptive to hormones such as estrogen is higher. Additionally, some of these ingredients (oxybenzone) leach the coral reefs of their nutrients and bleach them white, as well as disrupt the development of fish and other wildlife.

1) First, take the number of minutes you would normally burn in the sun without protection. (Depending on one’s skin type and severity of the sun, it only takes an average of 4 to 10 minutes (depending on UV index) for most people to burn from the sun without protection. Sunburn may take hours to actually appear on the skin which means damage is occurring before you can actually see it.) 2) Multiply that number by the SPF of your product. For example, with an SPF 30 x 6 minutes of sun time before burning = 180 (3 hours) ... this is how many minutes you can stay in the sun

without burning if you apply sunscreen properly and reapply after 120 minutes.

Why and when do we need to re-apply sunscreen? Re-application is necessary and recommended every two hours and after swimming, sweating, or towel drying. Use a water-resistant sunscreen if swimming or sweating. Re-application of sunscreen only gives the first application a boost in effectiveness; it does not prolong the amount of time you can stay in the sun. This means that if you are fair skin, you cannot stay in the sun more than 120 minutes no matter how many times you re-apply sunscreen. You need to get out of the sun or cover up with clothing if you don’t want to photoage and damage your skin.

Tricia Trimble is a Certified Esthetician and the Founder of Suntegrity Skincare, an eco-chic, award-winning mineral sun care line that has grown from a home based business into a million dollar sun care company.

Why zinc oxide is the best mineral (inorganic) sunscreen choice: Zinc oxide is a much more effective sunscreen than titanium dioxide. It is a better absorber across more UV wavelengths than titanium dioxide. This means zinc oxide provides better UVA/ UVB protection than titanium dioxide. It is the only sunscreen active ingredient that's generally recognized as safe by the FDA for use on babies under six months of age for the purpose of diaper rash cream. It is also a critical mineral nutrient that you often find in vitamin supplements. Zinc oxide has several properties which make it therapeutic to the skin and useful for certain skin conditions. Subtle tanning treatments for sun lovers by Carrie Borzillo

Trends may come and go, but glowing skin never goes out of fashion. That said, there is a slight shift toward showing off a more subtle artificial tan than the bolder faux looks of yesteryear. Clients still want the glow with some color to look good for bikini season, but they are going for a less-is-more approach this year. To suit their needs, spas are getting creative with body treatments featuring bronzers and shimmers over traditional tanning solutions, while others are opting for a customized, hand-painted look over the one-size-fits-all spray tanning booth options.

Here are five new ways to help give your client a modern summer glow:

Buff & Bronze Package

Spa Gregorie's Day Spas & Salons Newport Beach and Rancho Santa Margarita, California Everyone knows that a good faux tan must start with a great body exfoliation. That's why Angela Cortright, principal of Spa Gregorie's Day Spas & Salons, isn't joking when she says her Buff & Bronze Package (60-minutes, $109) features a full body exfoliation of "every square inch of the body – even in places hard to get to on your own!" The exfoliation is performed in a wet room using a water-based exfoliant containing fruit extracts and pumice. "The key to the success of your spray tan is that all the dead skin that 60

exists on the surface of our bodies is completely removed so that the tanning solution can react directly with the skin to provide a healthy glow. It's important that the exfoliant does not contain any oils, and that no lotions or powders are used on the skin as this will create a barrier between the skin and the tanning solution, yielding less than optimal results," says Cortright. Next comes the custom spray tan using an organic solution. "It's paraben-free, suitable for all skin types, and provides a completely natural, glowing color. We use only the finest all-natural ingredients available including certified organic DHA, Shea butter, citrus, ginseng, and cucumber," she adds. The spa prefers custom, hand spraying as opposed to the spray tan machines for a variety of reasons. "Everyone's body is different," explains

Cortright. "For a perfect tan application, the spray nozzle needs to be about 8-10 inches from the body. Since our bodies are not perfect cubes, the location of the spray nozzle needs to adjust to each individual's body shape, as well as different locations on the body — think inside arms and legs… can't get to those very well in a machine." Hand-spraying also offers a more even, less streaky tan and dries quicker, she adds.

Hydrating Sunless Tan

Elizabeth Adam Salon and Day Spa Chicago, Illinois The secret ingredient to Elizabeth Adam Day Spa's Hydrating Sunless Tan treatment (30-minutes, $125) is vitamininfused steam and infrared technology, which helps to prep the ideal canvas for a sunless tan application. After a full-body exfoliation with an oil-free scrub and rinse in the shower, the skin is sprayed by hand with a special solution. "The steam is fortified with hydrating and anti-aging active ingredients, such as Vitamins A, C, E, plant collagen and elastin, as well as aloe vera,

hyaluronic acid, CoQ10, green tea extract, and algae extract. This gives the skin enough moisture without oils that could form barrier for color to take," explains owner Elizabeth Adam. Another key to the spa's tanning success is to understand that not all tanning applications are best for all skin types. "We recommend airbrush tan for young, supple skin because younger skin is smooth and the spray tan goes on it evenly. But, for older skin that has wrinkles, folds, or sags is better with a hand-applied self-tanning cream so that it can get into all the creases for a more even tan," adds Adam.

tan to give a more gradual, natural look. "It's a light, hydrating formula that dries very quickly without any unpleasant odor that some self-tanners can have. This product is also available for our clients to purchase for home use so they can maintain and extend their tan. It gives just the right amount of color for a healthy glow, or you can apply it more frequently for a darker tan," says corporate director of esthetics Cara Brackman. The Bronzing Treatment starts out with a cream-based exfoliant with tiny sand-like grains. "A cream base is important because it washes away leaving the skin clean without any residue. Oil based exfoliants can leave product on the skin, making it difficult for any tanning product to actually absorb into the skin. It goes on just like a body moisturizer would be applied, but just

Not all tanning applications are best for all skin types. take some extra time to make sure it's applied evenly," she adds. For optimum results, it's recommended that clients book two bronzing sessions within three days of each other. And, it's safe and effective for the face as well, which not all spray tanning solutions can say.

Cranberry-Orange Body Glow

Joya Spa Omni Scottsdale Resort & Spa at Montelucia Scottsdale, Arizona Joya Spa's Cranberry-Orange Body Glow (50-minutes, $169 MondayThursday/$199 Friday-Sunday) uses the magic of mica to give their clients that special summer glow. "Mica is a mineral that is used specially for a shimmer/glow effect. It naturally reflects light providing the subtle glow that guests are looking for when wanting color but avoiding tanning. The glow provided for this treatment is ideal for a special occasion or a night on the town as this glow will only last until it is showered and scrubbed off," says spa director Stevie White. The treatment begins with a body exfoliation using cranberry orange sugar scrub combined with iron-rich Kaolin clay. "It transforms into a smooth masque for superb hydration and mineralization of the skin. This exfoliation is followed with an application of vanilla shimmer body lotion containing rich avocado oil, coconut oil, hyaluronic acid, vanilla extract, mica, and essential oils," says White. The finishing touch of the treatment is a serum of hyaluronic acid, golden mica, and a vanilla and muhuhu, which has a smoky and sweet sandalwoodlike scent, essential oil blend.

Golden Veil Body Ritual Margot European Day Spa Birmingham, Michigan

For clients seeking a subtle glow instead of a tan, Margot European Day Spa offers the Golden Veil Body Ritual (90-minutes, $170) as an option. The treatment includes a body scrub, body wrap, and a full body massage that

leaves the client with a golden hue. "We use a mineral iridescent powder, much like a bronzer. It's mixed with the mask and the mask is applied with a brush. Then the powder is applied in the finishing part of the treatment too. A small amount is massaged into the skin," says spa director Ursula Froehlich. The body wrap includes Artemisia flower (detoxification, increased circulation) and passionflower oil (moisturizing, softening, and restoring skin elasticity), as well as minerals and trace elements (re-mineralizing, reinforcing cellular cohesion and improving cell respiration). The iridescent mineral powder is made of cactus desert flower (softening, soothing, protecting the skin), soft focus pigments (to illuminate the skin

and provide the radiant glow), along with more passionflower oil and minerals and trace elements. "The subtle glow will last a few days. It will also depend on how often the client showers and exercises," adds Froehlich.

The latest hair removal trend for bikini season by Karin Noll Gorgeous summer is upon us! We wake up taking a deep breath and seeing the summer sky, knowing that today we are heading into work ready to help beautify and get our clients ready for vacation time. The books are filling up for the summer rush. Get excited to show off your new skills in Body Sugaring! The industry is stoked to have made the switch from other forms of hair removal. Today, we’re going to brag about Sugaring to all our friends, clients and neighbors. This natural technique will straight up change lives!

Summer Craze Guide

What Is Sugaring? The first question is almost always, “What is this sugaring all about? You’re scrubbing off the hair with sugar? Like sandpaper? Doesn’t that hurt?” No way, sugaring is actually a 100 percent natural product for hair removal. It’s a taffy-style (yes, even edible) paste made from sugar, lemon and water. Seriously, that’s it. And though it’s not really natural to remove hair, clients still want to remove it for that silky smooth feel, and with that comes doing it the safest and most gentle way possible.

The Right Direction We tell our clients it’s just like tweezing all at once. The paste is so soft, and it is hand applied against the direction of growth, just as if you were grabbing it with tweezers. The paste seeps around each hair so it can be pulled out all at once in a flick motion, parallel to the skin in the direction of growth. Wait, with the hair growth? Yes! Just like pulling weeds in the garden straight 66

out, we don’t rip weeds sideways or they’ll break. We pull them straight out in the direction of growth. With the momentum of the flick, the roots come straight out. Not to mention, with a good prep of the skin and a proper flick, the pain is pretty much non-existent and the time it takes to remove the hair is next to nothing.

Sensitive Subject What if the skin is super sensitive? Why is sugar paste so much better then other hair removal products? How long does it last? So many questions with each visit, right! Well, first and foremost, sugar is au natural and doesn’t have adhesives or resins. So not only does it not adhere to the skin, but it will also only remove loose dead skin cells which in turn gives us nice, glowy summer skin. Don’t worry at all about removing live skin cells that hair removal products such as wax’s do. No ripping the skin, no burning of the skin either

since the paste is held in hand. If the paste gets too warm, it turns into watery liquid which means we can’t hold it ourselves either. Paste stays body temperature and doesn’t have the ability to ever burn the skin. Our clients are able to dip themselves straight into the ocean or their favorite Vegas pool immediately after each sugaring session. There’s no more fear of hiding that red, irritated bumpy skin post oldschool hair removal. Silky, smooth skin without hair. Win win!

Choices, Choices It’s not lost on the Sugaring industry that every client is different and offers different types of hair to be removed. There are many different styles of sugaring pastes out there that can be used for each individual client and type of hair. You get to pick and choose from soft to hard pastes to perfect each service for each individual need. For pre/ post products, we can help our clients

Most sugars can also be retailed to give our clients a little extra fun to take home. We provide cleansers to help with prepping the skin, which removes excessive oils or deodorant. This helps the sugar seep into the cuticle more easily. Our favorites usually include saponified coconut oils, which are gentle at cleaning the skin and smell so heavenly. Piña Colada anyone? Dusting powders such as arrowroot, cornstarch or baking soda are all great alternatives to talc these days and are proven to be safe and effective. They are great for extra protection in sensitive areas such as the face, underarm and bikini regions, and also help absorb moisture to ease the sugaring procedure. Calming mists for those that have histamine reactions are super gentle and usually include ingredients such as aloe, willow bark and cucumber water. Wanting to give one last add on to your service for a big client thank you? Calming and hydrating lotions with antibacterial properties are a win for post leg or arm sugaring. “I don’t want an extra leg massage,” said no one ever!

women, with even the most sensitive of skin types, are switching to sugaring for their hair removal needs. Diabetic, oncology, pregnant, hormonal and otherwise compromised skin clients all love enjoying the beach and outdoors with clean bikinis and smooth underarms just as much as anyone. We are so glad to offer a service that will leave our clients’ skin integrity intact. No bumps, no bruising, no hair breakage, no ingrown hairs, significantly less pain if any at all, no downtime whatsoever immediately after sugaring. With no breakage, the hair also grows back more slowly and regular sugaring leads to permanent hair removal. What a difference just after the first visit! Innovations in skin tightening for youthful, fit looking skin with Dr. Lorenc

Lift, tuck, tighten and smooth. These are four requests many clients have when preparing for summer. Estheticians are constantly looking for the next gadget or gift set of products that will reduce cellulite, firm the skin, and give clients that beautiful beach body. And oftentimes, clients come to us expecting miracles. It’s time to clear the air about non-invasive skin-tightening and reveal the latest non-invasive options that deliver results.

Growing In Demand Non-invasive skin tightening is skyrocketing in demand. Clients aren’t looking to go under the knife, but they are still looking for noticeable, lasting results. Today more than ever, clients living busy lives simply do not have the luxury of taking several weeks off after aesthetic plastic surgery to heal. They need results without the downtime, and as estheticians, we have the opportunity to deliver. We asked Dr. Paul Lorenc, world-renowned and board-certified New York-based aesthetic plastic surgeon, where he sees the future of skin tightening and what innovations estheticians can bring to their clients this summer:

Why is skin tightening such a popular treatment? Over time, skin loses its elasticity causing it to sag. A person’s weight will also fluctuate and so a person might undergo a skin tightening procedure after giving birth, dropping a few pounds, or sometimes even after liposuction just to maintain results. Are skin tightening treatments growing in demand? Why? Yes, in recent years skin tightening has become more popular due to the fact that new technology is being developed for this particular market. Are skin tightening treatments currently on the market invasive? The types of skin tightening treatments available today range in complexity. For example, my practice offers ThermiSmooth, a minimally invasive procedure that uses customized radiofrequency to achieve tighter skin without an incision of any kind. This will cater to patients who are looking for skin tightening to smooth out minor wrinkles in the skin. Slightly more invasive is ThermiTight, a procedure that consists of making a small incision and heating up the tissue using a tiny probe in order to stimulate collagen production. On the other end of the spectrum, there are procedures like abdominoplasty’s, where excess skin is removed surgically to achieve a tighter look. Are the current treatments effective? Depends on what you are trying to achieve. Choosing a less invasive procedure will normally require more than one treatment, and all procedures require maintenance. Not all treatments will give you the same result, so it is more about customizing your treatment options based on what is a good fit for you. 72

What new treatments are on the horizon? What does the future of skin tightening look like? I’m anticipating variation and improvement for these energy-based skin tightening devices, stay tuned! Can estheticians perform any skin tightening treatments? Sure! The estheticians I work with perform ThermiSmooth as well as other laser treatments that can help with tightening. Is skin tightening permanent? How long do results last? The less invasive the procedure the more frequently the patient will have to return to the office. Results vary from patient to patient and is also affected by their lifestyle post-procedure. Permanent skin tightening is achieved surgically. What signs and symptoms do these treatments correct? Again, it’s all about customizing your options to be a good fit for you. They are all generally created to improve skin laxity, firmness to achieve an overall tighter appearance. Are these treatments more popular in certain times of the year? Why? Definitely. People are more prone to undergo these treatments outside of the summer months to better prepare for bikini season. Likewise, people who

undergo more invasive procedures will save it for springtime to give themselves sufficient recovery time. What are the contraindications for skin tightening treatments? Any procedure that will require radiofrequency cannot be performed on a patient with any cardiac devices such as a pacemaker. These devices are affected by RF energy. What do these treatments NOT do? When should you recommend surgical alternatives? These less invasive skin tightening procedures are effective, but will require maintenance. One visit will not cut it. If the patient wants a permanent result, they might consider surgery. For instance, a well done abdominoplasty will last a lifetime. What non-invasive products or treatments can clients use at home, if any? Products with retinol, hyaluronic acid and glycolic acid can be very affective. School's out for summer! Families around the country are packing their bags and filling their tanks for vacation. Whether their final destination is a beach, a desert or a windy city, these travelers are looking to use their time off to rejuvenate and renew their energy for that post-vacation rush when they return to their daily lives. Summer is the perfect time to prioritize wellness practices and treatments. Embrace the rush of visiting vacationers to your area and offer them the T.L.C. they are looking for this summer! Here are five Summer Wellness Trends gracing the menus of top summer destination spas:

1. Take A Breath The growing emphasis on breath and the importance of mindful breathing exercises is making its way into the treatment room. Client seeking complete relaxation and rejuvenation this summer will benefit from guided breathing exercises that can be incorporated into every massage, facial and body treatment on your menu. Here are a few easy techniques you can walk your client through on their way to blissful relaxation:

• The 4-7-8 Method This breathing technique is named after the number of counts per breath in each step of the technique. Instruct your clients to breathe in deeply through their nose for four counts. Ask them to hold that breathe for seven counts, and then release by breathing out through their mouth for eight counts. The extended breathing allows for more air to reach the depths of the lungs, providing deeper oxygenation and reduce tension.

mer thirst quenchers are a healthy way to enjoy sweet, fruity flavors without all the sugar you advise your clients against during their skin analysis. Plus, clients can enjoy the benefits of antioxidants and vitamin infusion that these summer citrus fruits bring to the table.

Ingredients:

Stir these summer spa waters into your seasonal offerings:

Directions:

• Yoga Breathing Breath is an essential component of every yoga class. It supports the effectiveness of the poses and keeps you mindful in your practice. Many instructors guide their clients through breathing exercises to center their minds and keep them aware of their breath. In the treatment room, ask your clients to place their hands on their bellies and feel their breath as it passes in and out rhythmically. Simply drawing attention to the breath is a great way to relax the clients and welcome them to the present moment.

2. Haute Hydration Who doesn't love the taste of tropical fruits in the summer? Pineapple, mango, and coconut transport us to our favorite beach destinations. Incorporating flavored spa water is a simple and easy addition to spas of any size. These sum-

Watermelon Lime Coconut Water Prep Time: 10-15 minutes Serves: one half gallon

Ingredients: • ice cubes • four cups of coconut water • three-pound watermelon, cubed • one medium lime

Directions: In a blender, puree watermelon. Strain pulp from watermelon, saving only the juice. Add coconut water and stir. Add lime slices to water. Cover and chill for at least one hour. Pour spa water over ice upon serving. Citrus Mint Basil Water Prep Time: 15 minutes Serves: one half gallon

• ice cubes • water • one lemon, sliced • three oranges, sliced • one-half cucumber, sliced • six detox tea bags

In a kettle or small pot, boil water and brew detox tea bags. Remove tea bags and let cool. Pour ice into a half-gallon pitcher and layer lemon and sliced cucumber on top. Pour tea into the pitcher. Chill for one hour, or until cold, before serving.

3. Salt In The Air Salty seawater and breeze are a mainstay for any summer vacation. So much so that spas around the world are adding salt rooms to their repertoire. Salt therapy, also known as halotherapy, hails from Central Europe and Asia and is being offered in the form of salt beds, salt rooms, and salt booths. Spas are lining their walls and floors with salt blocks and crystals so that clients can feel the energizing effect of these positive ions. Salt affects our bodies at a cellular level, increasing cell activity, energy, and blood flow. Inhalation of salt can

also reduce inflammation and mucus in the lungs, providing temporary relief for ailments such as asthma, allergies, and sinus congestions. Salt is also detoxifying and supports the immune and lymphatic systems. No space for a salt room? You can still gift your clients the benefits of halotherapy this summer without sending them to the beach. Salt lamps are a popular way to receive the ionic benefits of salt. Simply light a few around the treatment room for a salty, sensual glow.

shots, meet cocktails. Adding these often flavored collagen infused boosters to your client's favorite pick-me-up is a great way for them to let loose on vacation with sacrificing all your efforts in the treatment room. Add a shot of flavored collagen powder or liquid to margaritas, mojitos or champagne for an indulgent drink experience that will help firm, tightening and brighten skin from the inside out. Maybe it will curb the hangover, maybe it won't…

4. Poolside Meditation The change of seasons from spring to summer allows your clients a chance to change up their daily routines and wellness habits. Understanding and preparing for the different energy that summer brings allows your clients to flow with nature and maintain a harmony. Encourage them to shift their daily routines and take some time to center themselves with poolside mediation. Benefits can include: • Calm • Balance • Stress management • New perspective and problem solving • Self-awareness

Poolside meditation involves the buoyancy of water. Floating relaxes both the mind and the body. Encourage clients to take a dip and concentrate on the sensation of floating. Instruct them to breathe deeply, using the breathing techniques mentioned above. The floating experience is enhanced by letting the water cover the ears, tuning out the world and leaving clients alone with their peaceful thoughts.

5. Collagen Cocktails Who doesn't love sipping on a piña colada to cool offer after sunbathing (with sunscreen, of course)? Well, now you can offer your clients a delicious treat with added benefits. Collagen

Why this beach bag essential deserves a place in your treatment room by Aurora Solis

It’s in every beach bag, bathroom cabinet and emergency sunburn kit from June through August. Aloe Vera: everyone has heard of it, used it, and recommended it to friends and family who spend a little too much time in the sun. But how does this ingredient actually work? What characteristics and properties make it such a cult classic soothing ingredient? Let’s dive deeper into how and why aloe vera is a summer time staple…

Aloe Vera Facts What is aloe vera? Before it becomes the cooling, clear gel that we all recognize, it starts as a succulent plant species of the genus Aloe. It is native to the Arabian Peninsula but it grows around the world in tropical climates. Average folk can find success in growing aloe vera as a potted plant, and many do so specifically for its use in skin care and wound healing.

organic & wellness Say Aloha to Aloe Vera Aloe vera is a stem-less plant that can reach between 24 to 39 inches tall. Its thick, green leaves are serrated with small, sharp teeth. The aloe vera plant does grow a flower, which is yellow and cone shaped. The thick, mucilaginous gel used for topical skin conditions and has a digestive aid is harvested by cutting open the aloe vera leaf and draining the gel. The gel is simply torn from the flesh of the spikes leaves or left to drain vertically.

Benefits Aloe vera has been used for centuries as a natural healer. It is used in traditional Indian medicine for constipation, skin diseases, infections and as a natural remedy for colic. In Chinese medicine, aloe vera treats fungal diseases. Two parts of the plant are used for medicinal purposes: the gel from the leaves, and the latex from the cells beneath the leaf’s surface. Of the Aloe species, aloe vera contains the most biologically active components. With more than 75 potentially active compounds, the plant contains vitamins, minerals, saccharides, amino acids, anthraquinones, enzymes, lignin, sapons and salicylic acids. It provides 20 of the 22 human-required amino acids and eight of the eight essential amino acids. Let’s breakdown aloe vera’s active benefits: • High in vitamins A, C, E • Antioxidants, folic acid and choline • Enzymes such as catalase, cellulose and lipase • Minerals like calcium, copper, zinc and magnesium • Fatty acids and cholesterol with antiinflammatory effects • Wound healing hormones such as auxins and gibberellins that stimulate fibroblasts

ging them to prevent the dreaded peeling and discoloration followed by sunburn. Unfortunately, the damage has been done. However, you can apply and recommend a retail aloe vera gel to soothe the skin and prevent peeling. You may also want to recommend a rich moisturizer with aloe vera to protect the skin and further prevent peeling. Aloe can also be used to soothe other burns such as razor burn and irritation from over exfoliating. If your client tends to get hydroxyl acid-happy, recommend they take a break and use an aloe vera gel to calm the skin before ramping it back up again with active ingredients.

UV Damage Control According to a 2008 study by Amar Surjushe, Resham Vasani, and D G Saple, “Aloe vera gel has been reported to have a protective effect against radiation damage to the skin. Exact role is not known, but following the administration of aloe vera gel, an antioxidant protein, metallothionein, is generated

It reduces the production and release of skin keratinocyte-derived immunosuppressive cytokines such as interleukin-10 (IL-10) and hence prevents UV-induced suppression of delayed type hypersensitivity.”

Post Peel Soother Aloe vera has been used in the topical treatment of conditions like psoriasis, dermatitis, surgical wounds and

Aloe vera is also great before makeup, as it does not leave an oily shine on the skin. as a home remedy for burns. In a 1935 study, aloe vera was reported to provide rapid relief from itching and burning associated with dermatitis. Another double-blind study showed aloe vera was more effective than a placebo cream at treating psoriasis.

Treatment Tip Mix an aloe vera gel with your enzymatic exfoliation. This will help soothe any irritation or tingling from the exfoliant without inhibiting it to work deeply into the skin. Aloe vera can also be applied immediately after a chemical peel, as the lightweight gel will hydrate and soothe the skin without clogging freshly exfoliated pores.

All For Acne Acneic clients will fall in love with aloe vera treatments. Auxin and gibberellins are anti-inflammatory hormones that reduce inflammation caused by acne. It also promotes the growth of new skin cells to promote turnover and renew the skin. The renewing properties of aloe vera help to heal and prevent scarring often caused by inflammatory acne. Aloe vera also contains six antiseptic ingredients: Lupeol, salicylic acid, urea nitrogen, cinnamonic acid, phe-

Anti Aging Super Plant The same study published in 2008 outlines the amazing anti aging effects of aloe vera on the skin: “Mucopolysaccharides help in binding moisture into the skin. Aloe stimulates fibroblasts, which produce the collagen and elastin fibers making the skin more elastic and less wrinkled. It also has cohesive effects on the superficial flaking epidermal cells by sticking them together, which softens the skin. The amino acids also soften hardened skin cells and zinc acts as an astringent to tighten pores. Its moisturizing effects has also been studied in treatment of dry skin associated with occupational exposure where aloe vera gel gloves improved the skin integrity, decreases appearance of fine wrinkle and decreases erythema.”

• How did you first get into makeup?

From Face to Canvas Journey from makeup artist to contemporary print artist with Wendy Buiter

90

June2018

LNEonline.com

In my twenties, I was working as a flight attendant and had many days off between shifts to fill. I decided to attend makeup school and start a little company with my free time. My business started to grow, and soon it became my life’s passion. Throughout the Netherlands, I had mainly bridal clients. As the business grew, I had artists working under me. We worked with cosmetics sales departments and did beauty consults across the country, including job placement for makeup artists and cosmetics professionals.

• What was your favorite thing about working on clients?

I enjoyed being that bride’s best friend for the day. They rely on you for makeup, but also for emotional support on the most important day of their life. You really get to bond with your client, starting at the trial six weeks or so before the event. Clients are so thankful for you and it was truly very rewarding.

• How did you grow your makeup business?

To find clients, I worked with magazines as a makeup artist on shoots to advertise my work. I placed ads in all the bridal magazines, used direct mailing and editorial advertisements.

• How did your business grow and change as you became more successful?

Eventually, I had a hundred artists working under me, a makeup academy, and business relationships with big cosmetics companies as we found job placements and did beauty consults for their brands. It grew into something I never imagined, and it was my life.

• So when did the transition from makeup artist to artist begin?

I built this successful company, and eventually it started to feel like an office job for me. I was running a business. I felt the creative aspect for me wasn’t there anymore. I always said that when I retired, I was going to paint all day even if I was old and my hands were shaking. I grew tired of being a managing director, and I exited the company in 2014. I decided to begin my career as an artist and go on this art journey ahead of me.

• What connection do you see between your art and your makeup?

When I paint, it’s like I’m doing makeup. I shade and highlight, add lip-gloss and lashes. It happens unconsciously. Unlike my natural bridal makeup looks on clients, in my art I use bold lines, lashes, shapes and colors.

• Do you look to makeup trends to influence your new art works?

I always see the trends and think how it would fit into my work. It’s interesting to play with different eyebrow shapes and lashes.

• Are you more creative and expressive in your art than you were in your makeup?

Makeup has to be done on time. A client can wait three weeks for a work of art. I have time to think and conceptualize. Art is more expressive because

it comes from yourself, not from your client’s vision. I don’t see it as work, it’s my life.

• Is there ever a time where you regret your career switch, or miss working with makeup clients?

I’ve made a great choice in becoming an artist. I feel as though I’ve stretched my life. I always had a passion for art, and just left it in the corner. I decided to make it my career and I have no regrets.

• What advice do you have for makeup artists looking to find their own signature style or artistic niche?

It’s important to have a focus. Choose a specialty and advertise it. Clients will expect you to live up to your own expertise. Maintain the value you create with your brand and be an expert in the field you choose.

• Was it an easy transition from makeup to art? Did you struggle to find your style?

At first, I attended this prestigious art academy that was very conceptual. I was trying to do something different and avant-garde but my passion for makeup was always there. It was a real struggle to find my signature style in art. I wasn’t looking to make art with makeup. I was just looking to make art. It took me about two years to find my now recognizable signature style.

Contour How to sculpt and slenderize with airbrush spray tanning by Jennifer Materia Ever wonder how those Victoria’s Secret models get those chiseled abs and long lean leg muscles? What’s their secret? Of course a clean diet and hours in the gym help, but the secret is body contouring. Body contouring with an organic spray tan allows a spray tan artist to shade and contour the muscle lines of the body. By shading and accentuating the natural muscle tone, it makes an individual appear more toned and in shape, think sexy obliques and six pack abs, sweeping thigh muscles along with defined shoulders and arms.

Ultimate Illusion Contouring involves the application of darker color to certain areas of the body to create an optical illusion. Every client has different skin tones, so it’s imperative to select the right color to use on them. A client with yellow undertones would not get the same solution blend as a client with pink undertones. This is crucial, so that the dreaded “orange” effect does not happen. If the wrong color is selected, it will produce very unnatural results. Another thing to consider is the DHA percentage used. Solutions typically come in eight percent, 10 percent, 12 percent and 14 percent DHA. A natural porcelain skin client would be best off with an eight percent solution, whereas a client with olive skin tone could handle a 12 percent. If too high of a percentage is used, then the results will be very unnatural and clients will not like the results. Blending the right solution and picking the right DHA percentage are the two most important things to remember before you start to spray tan a client.

Secret Smoother Body Contouring is a great treatment to provide because it masks cellulite, makes muscles look more defined, and allows the artist to highlight and accentuate certain body parts. It creates an overall slimmer look year round. It’s also great for before special events such as red carpet appearances or photo shoots. Many fitness professionals will choose to do this before a photo shoot or fitness competition. It can hide a double chin and it can reduce forehead size when contouring the face. It can also help make the waist look smaller and accentuate the bottom and breasts. It’s important to keep it natural and use your best judgment. You don’t want to make someone look unnatural and ridiculous. 94

June2018

LNEonline.com

The Application The spray tan artist will apply a light spray tan and then begin contouring the muscles with a smaller airbrush gun. The contouring will be done one shade darker than the all over spray tan. A spray tan alone gives the illusion of a more toned body, evens out skin tone and helps mask unwanted blemishes and veins. Contouring takes it to the next level, and shades and highlights the natural muscle tone. It’s also great for masking unsightly bruises and cellulite. Everyone feels 10 pounds thinner once they get a spray tan.

Highlighting After the initial spray tan, the technician will go over the areas of the body to be highlighted, including the face. We start by shading above and below the collarbones to give a more defined appearance. We also outline the sides

of the chest for an instant lift. Biceps and triceps are then contoured. Clients are asked to flex their bicep muscle and then we shade right below the muscle. For triceps, clients are asked to make a fist and point the arm down and flex the triceps. We then shade the indentation on the back of the arm. Breasts can also be highlighted to create more cleavage.

Rock Hard Abs Next are the abdominal muscles. Everyone asks for six pack abs, but we want to create a natural look, not stenciled on. We ask the client to flex their muscles so that we can shade and darken around those natural lines. Typically, that involves shading the line down the middle of the abs, as well as the obliques. By shading the obliques a little darker, the waistline appears smaller. If a client has defined ab mus-

cles, we will shade those natural muscle lines darker. We can’t create something there that isn’t there to begin with. So again, it’s important to work with the client’s body. It’s best to stay conservative and accentuate what the client has already.

and a slimmer face. The face contouring is great for women who want the look of contoured makeup while on vacation but don’t want to actually wear makeup. It allows women to go without makeup and still have the look of high cheekbones. Many clients also use it to diminish the double chin before a big event. We tan under the chin which will slenderize that area. We also shade the top and sides of the forehead to make the forehead appear smaller. It’s even possible to slenderize the nose by shading the sides ever so slightly.

The airbrush tan with body contour will last on average five to 10 days. It’s best to avoid hot tubs and Jacuzzis after getting the procedure. Swimming is allowed, but it’s best to avoid excessive amounts of time swimming. Chlorine will shorten the life of the tan. Long hot baths will also shorten the life of the tan. The tan will fade gradually and we do suggest clients to use a tan extending lotion to prolong the life. It’s also best to avoid bar soaps and harsh products, such as ones that contain alpha hydroxyl acids. If the after care is followed, the tan will fade off gradually the same as a natural tan would. If clients are looking for a way to boost the color for a night out, we suggest using a body bronzer. A body bronzer is a temporary way to boost the color on the body. It washes off with soap at the end of the night, but it will not rub off on clothing. Investing in a custom airbrush tan with full body contouring before a special event is a great way to give your client more confidence. Typically, the minimum age is 12 and there’s no age limit! Body contouring is appropriate for both men and women. Pregnant and breastfeeding clients can also do this procedure with proper precautions. We suggest doing this one to two days before your event. Full body contouring begins at $75.

Lean Leg Contouring Moving on to the legs, we will shade the outer and inner thighs creating a beautiful quad sweep and creating the appearance of dancer’s legs. By asking clients to stand on their tippy toes, we can sculpt out the calf muscles. Next is the bottom - by spraying two semi circles under the bottom, it will appear more lifted and perky.

Detailed Facial Contour Lastly, we move on to the face. We contour just below the cheekbones to give the appearance of higher cheekbones

After Care Once the contouring is complete, the client needs to wait eight hours before showering or getting wet. During the first shower, the client should expect to see bronzer washing off in the shower. A gentle sulfate and paraben soap or body wash should be used during this shower. Once the water runs clear, it’s safe to assume all of the bronzer has washed off and they can come out of the shower. After the initial rinse, the client then should apply a paraben free body moisturizer or lotion twice a day.

Jennifer Materia, CEO and founder of GLOW always loved the sun and having a sun-kissed glow but hated the harmful repercussions of the sun’s rays. She decided she wanted to create a place that could deliver the same awesome feeling and look of a sun kissed skin but in a safe and healthy way. With a passion for health and wellness, GLOW only uses the finest solutions that are all natural, organic, paraben and cruelty free. LNEonline.com
