FACIAL cupping THE ANCIENT PRACTICE OF

SKIN REJUVENATION by Leslie L. DeMatteo

I

nterest in cupping is at a peak right now as a result of its use by Olympic athletes, but cupping has been used for thousands of years in China, Egypt and Greece. Most of us have heard of cupping applied to the body, but facial cupping offers many benefits as well! Cupping uses fire (flash cupping) or a pump and/or valve system to create a vacuum, resulting in negative pressure, or suction, pulling the skin and underlying tissue out and away from the body. This increases circulation to the skin and decreases restrictions in fascia and scar tissue.

FACIAL CUPPING

U

sing special cups designed for the delicate skin of the face, facial cupping offers many similar benefits. Tension in facial muscles is one of the biggest contributors to the appearance of aging. Facial cupping is gentle and relaxing. It also offers many health and beauty benefits as well, including: • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Increased nutrients and oxygenation for healthier skin Minimized lines and wrinkles Reduced creping and increased skin tone Reduced puffiness under eyes, chin and jowls Diminished scar tissue Reduction in headaches from eye strain Relief from sinus pressure and congestion Stimulation of collagen production resulting in improved elasticity Detoxified skin from the drawing of impurities to the surface for removal Relaxation of facial muscles for a younger, less stressed look Reduction in acne over time Decreased facial paralysis from certain conditions Increased absorption of skin care products

Overall, facial cupping improves the complexion and results in younger, firmer looking skin!

PROTOCOLS Facial cupping treatments typically last between 15 and 30 minutes, and can be used as an add-on to existing skin care services or as a stand-alone treatment. Special cups are used, which are smaller in diameter and contoured for the face. Sets either have a rubber bulb on the end to create suction or are made of silicone, which is squeezed, creating the vacuum necessary. Facial cupping sets run between $8.99 to $59.99, depending on size, style, count and brand of cups included. As with any type of facial services, facial cupping prices vary widely by region.

SKIN

FACIAL CUPPING

Skin should be cleaned thoroughly before the treatment, and a light application of facial oil should be applied so cups can seal well and glide smoothly. Cups can be placed and left in one position, a technique called site cupping, or they can be slowly dragged across the face in a technique called gliding cupping. Site cupping is typically done over a particularly deep wrinkle in order to “plump” the area, bringing in fresh blood, oxygen and nutrients. Gliding cupping is done to reduce congestion and move the excess fluid to the nearest lymphatic vessels to drain an area. Facial cupping uses a much gentler suction than cupping done on the body, and as such is painless and should never leave marks on the skin. When performing cupping, work each site or gliding pathway three times before moving to the next. Work one side of the face first, repeating on the other side. To perform gliding cupping, place cup with suction and drag two to three inches, then release in a slow, gentle, drawn-out “flicking” motion. Begin near the end point and work backward drawing fluid toward the lymphatics by clearing the drainage pathway. If you wanted to clear a room of furniture, you begin nearest the door, so too when clearing fluid, begin near the “exit”. Slower movements increase lymphatic drainage and reduce puffiness, while faster movements increase circulation and stimulate collagen, improving elasticity of the skin. Skin integrity can vary based on client age and health, so be careful that you are not using suction strong enough to break capillaries, bruise the skin or leave marks.

16

|

NOVEMber 2016

|

LNeonline.com

Step-by-Step: 1.

After cleansing the skin, begin along the clavicle with gliding cupping, using the “flicking” motion while working toward the under-side of the ear to increase lymphatic drainage. 2. Start on the center line of the chin, using gliding cupping along the jaw moving toward the ear. 3. Clear the upper lip by using gliding cupping, drawing fluid toward ear. If there are fine lines along lips, end by placing site cups for a few seconds to increase circulation to the area in order to minimize lines. 4. Beginning along the side of the tip of the nose (working toward the bridge of the nose) use gliding cupping to draw fluid toward the side of the face. This may be repeated several times to reduce sinus congestion. 5. If time allows, return to the clavicle and side of neck, clearing lymphatics again to stimulate drainage. 6. Beginning just under the inside corner of the eye, slowly glide toward the outside edge of the eye orbit, drawing fluid and stagnant blood away from the under eye area. 7. Beginning at the inside of the eye orbit, suction slowly across the top of the orbit, just under the brow moving toward the outside edge of the eye to reduce puffiness above the eye. 8. Place cup between eyes and allow it to rest (site cupping) for a few seconds, before drawing up toward the hairline. 9. Beginning in the center of the forehead, use gliding cupping to follow three lines: the first directly above the brow, the second along the middle of the forehead, and the third just below the hair line. Glide the cup from the mid-line of the face toward the lateral edge of the face, just above the ear. 10. Return to the clavicle and clear the neck and lymphatic vessels again, working back to the underside of the ear and up to the side of the face, for a final lymphatic drainage.

FACIAL CUPPING

PRE- and POST-CUPPING INSTRUCTIONS Clients should be advised to avoid makeup the day of treatment in order to minimize impurities in the skin. Clients should also be encouraged to stay well-hydrated both before and after treatment to maximize the benefits. Shaving or other hair removal should be avoided on the day of the cupping treatment as skin will be more sensitive. Excessive heat or sun exposure should also be avoided as skin may be sensitive for up to 12 hours after treatment. As with any facial, cupping draws impurities to the surface and there may be a breakout immediately after treatment, so cupping should be avoided within three to five days before an event like a wedding. The risk of post-treatment breakouts, called a “healing crisis”, diminishes with regular treatments.

CONTRAINDICATIONS Contraindications for facial cupping are similar to those for providing any skin care services. Facial cupping is contraindicated on: • • • • • • • • •

Cold sores Open wounds, sores (severe acne), cuts and abrasions Undiagnosed lumps or swelling Fresh bruising Melanoma or other cancers Eczema, dermatitis or psoriasis Bleeding for any reason Broken capillaries Moles, skin tags and warts

TRAINING Classes in facial cupping can run between $250 and $350 for a one-day training and often cover the meridians

PLATINUM, GOLD, SILVER, COPPER THE SECRETS TO GLOWING SKIN by Bella Schneider

T

he quest for beautiful skin and love for precious metals has prevailed throughout history, and for good reason. After all, what could be a better way to beautify indulgently than by adorning the skin with Earth’s most prized elements? Precious metals including platinum, gold, silver and copper contain a wealth of nourishing and anti-aging properties that make the skin shine like the jewels they represent. The effectiveness of these luxurious elements in skin care is being

backed more and more by research, leading to their increasing inclusion in beauty creams, serums, masks and skin oils to deliver younger, firmer skin with a gorgeous glow. Precious metals are also known for enhancing the productivity of other skin care ingredients. Plus if the most ancient civilizations including the Egyptians, Greeks, Romans and Chinese used precious metals as part of their skin care routines, then maybe the past has something to teach us about lasting beauty!

PLATINUM, GOLD, SILVER, COPPER

Treatment Tips: Because it creates such a luxurious experience when used, both inspa treatments and at-home cosmetics featuring gold are great options for your clients prior to special events or anytime they just want to look amazing. Beauty oils for face and body can create this same elegance on body skin. For in-spa treatments, gold can be incorporated into your most luxurious skin brightening treatments to lift skin and create a glittery effect. For example, after cleansing skin, exfoliate with a pure gold scrub. Next, apply a sheet of liquid gold onto skin. Follow with a preferred heat technology to further penetrate ingredients. Skin will be plumped, firmed, brightened and exude a gorgeous luminosity! Gold can also be used as a key element in innovative and indulgent beauty service packages.

KEY LARGO, FLA.

A SPA WITH A TROPICAL TWIST by Amanda Clinton Winter

THE

NEWLY OPENED PLAYA LARGO RESORT & SPA in Key Largo, Fla., is the first resort and spa built in the Upper Keys in 22 years. Since its launch at the end of August of this year, its calling card has been customized luxury and wellness with a tropical twist, complete with a mojito-inspired steam room. The surrounding ocean inspires a multitude of treatments as well as the resort’s namesake, which in Spanish means Long Beach. “We are continuously inspired by the color, movement and energy of the ocean,” explains spa director Caroline Wilmot. The spacious resort is home to the Ocean Spa, which serves as the only full service spa and salon in the area, with six treatment rooms.

SPA OF THE MONTH

Signature TREATMENTS Massage has traditionally been the most popular spa item and one in which standing out can be challenging. Ocean Spa presents the Ocean Spa Custom Massage. As suggested in the name, guests are able to decide which pressure and essential oil aromatherapy options best suit their needs right before stepping into the treatment room, rather than at booking. Options for the full body massage include Swedish for a lighter touch, or Deep Tissue for a more vigorous technique. Using an innovative approach to wellness, the massage utilizes the technique of lomi lomi. The term, which is Hawaiian in origin, roughly translates to the act of a gentle kneading in rhythm, much like ocean tides. Guests can further customize their treatment with their preferred scents to enhance or create an emotional state, with four options available.

TRAINING Intense preparations began four weeks before opening day in August 2016. Team members were hand picked via a rigorous interview process. An entirely new menu meant learning protocols and the intention behind the selection of ingredients. Retail product vendors were chosen based on their like-minded green philosophies and exceptional qualities. Each vendor spent between one and three days training the spa’s team members on their products and services. Ocean Spa is investing in continuing education for its staff, and one vendor is invited back each month to give staff a refresher course and introduce new products.

40

|

NOVEMber 2016

|

“Culture is part of the Autograph Collection Hotels experience,” Wilmot says. “We train staff to understand the brand and how to ask the right questions for constructive feedback so they can make any needed adjustments. In this industry, we seek to stand out by making our customer service experience more unique than what our competitors offer. We encourage staff to let their personalities show and make personal connections through communication. This happens when they take the extra time to understand the guests as part of the singular culture.”

SPA OF THE MONTH

TEAM Ocean Spa is dedicated to making the most out of every spa visit. Staff is given a performance review weekly to ensure top-notch quality. In addition, guests fill out a standard comment card evaluating the overall experience, with a separate section for each treatment. The spa’s goal is to enhance menu options and bring treatments to the next level with the help of feedback. The goal of consistent and structured feedback is to create two-way communication between guests and staff. “We enjoy providing a wonderful experience together as a team,” Wilmot shares. “Our team members are healers and they thrive off the energy of guests. MARKETING As the 100th Autograph Collection outpost, the soft and grand openings of Ocean Spa were nothing short of a true celebration of the community. The spa has become a member of the local Chamber of Commerce and is an active member of wildlife preservation efforts. Playa Largo has partnered with local charities such as the Wild Bird Ambassador program, which allows children staying in the resort day care to partake in fun field trips to learn about the importance of habitats and how to protect local wildlife while closely supervised. Additionally, the spa is hosting the

Humphrey Bogart Film Festival this year as part of the effort to give back to the local community. Key Largo offers a vibrant and highly social community. In order to effectively market their unique treatment options, the spa creates monthly events based on local happenings. For example the Bridge Run, which takes place every November, is an opportunity to interact with locals and those who have made the trek from other parts of the country by offering massages for runners. November is also the time to promote seasonal ingredients in time for Thanksgiving.

spa DIRECTOR SPOTLIGHT

Revenue AND RETAIL Ocean Spa embraces local inspiration and promotes a green environmental philosophy. All product ingredients must be hypo-allergenic and vegan with active plant components for rich trace minerals. Selections for retail include ingredients such as red coral plant and luxurious chemical-free sun protection that flows with the ocean-inspired focus. One particularly popular item is self-heating marine mud derived from seaweed that nourishes the skin.

With the abundance of sun that locals and tourists experience in Key Largo, a potent oil is needed to relieve sunburns and protect skin while also being soothing. Playa Largo offers dilo oil, which has been touted as one of the next up and coming preferred oils in the industry. Known for providing soft and supple skin with the added benefit of being fast-absorbing, this oil is perfect for use in treatments to provide relief from too much time in the sun, and is optimal for hotel guests as well.  Caroline Wilmot is the Spa Director at Playa Largo Resort. She is a seasoned pro in building spa and wellness programs from the ground up. Wilmot led the helm at a Forbes five-star hotel and spa in Chicago before working and traveling through the Caribbean for three years aboard an international cruise line. Her focus with Key Largo’s first full-service spa is to embrace the local experience. In her off time Wilmot enjoys fishing with her husband and motor biking.

Tips to Protect & Extend Your Career with Strategized Self Care by Lynda Solien-Wolfe and Robyn Lynn Green

E

very year, thousands of professionals enter the spa industry, hoping to have a satisfying and lengthy career of providing care for clients. We strive to make our clients feel their absolute best, but at what cost to ourselves? Burnout is a large problem in our profession. Research suggests that many therapists drop out of the profession within three to seven years of graduating. While this of course is not true for all therapists, it indicates an alarming trend.

The daily activities in the treatment room can put our bodies through a workout that rivals many fitness programs by a personal trainer. We lift, crouch, stretch and contort our bodies to best serve the needs of clients. Often we suffer from a variety of physical problems, such as repetitive strain injuries of the hand and wrist, which can result in carpal tunnel syndrome, and medial and lateral epicondylitis, also known as golfer’s elbow or tennis elbow.

MASTERING BODY POSITIONING

In addition, low back and sciatic pain can force us out of work for days at a time, with lingering pain for months. Also consider that clients’ treatments are compromised when the therapist is distracted by pain. Hence, it is essential to use effective and safe body mechanics to ensure we remain injury free and happy in our careers for a very long time. As therapists, there are many ways we can protect our bodies and extend our careers. First and foremost, it is essential to achieve the best possible working space by always being aware of the positioning of your body and your client’s body.

ROOM SETUP AND BODY POSITIONING TABLE HEIGHT. Set your treatment table to the correct height for each treatment. Everyone’s styles and preferences are different, but a good starting point is to stand with your palms parallel to the floor and adjust the table height to just under your palms. From there, take the time to experiment and find the most comfortable height for yourself. Lower the height of your table for

larger clients to maintain the relative working height. Table height is also important when you need to apply a great deal of pressure. A lower table height allows you the leverage to apply a greater amount of pressure with little or no strain on your body. This process should only take one to two minutes but it can provide protection from many injuries. Another way to avoid improper table height is to invest in a hydraulic table, which allows you to raise and lower the table to the desired height throughout the entire treatment with a press on the foot pedal or bar. TABLE POSITION. There should be a minimum clearance of two feet on all four sides of your table to allow you to have a wide stance, lunge position and bent knees while standing, and to enable flowing movement throughout the treatment. This also affords you the space to have a stool at times when you need to be seated. POSTURE. Be aware of your posture when performing treatments. Keep a relaxed stance with shoulders back and head up, and always try to avoid hy-

perextension of the fingers and wrists by using both hands when possible — one to apply the stroke and the other to brace the fingers or wrist. Set your room up so that all the products utilized are a comfortable distance from where you are working. This allows you to maintain a flow in your treatment and avoid any injury caused by straining to reach your workstation.

PREVENT INJURY AND PHYSICAL OVERUSE SYNDROME It is imperative that you take care of yourself first in order to be your very best for your clients. You can achieve this by following a regular routine of self care before, during and after you perform treatments. Also make sure to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water during and between treatments. RELAX. Taking time for proper stretching and meditation promotes a balanced mind and body. It is also important to create a manageable work schedule that permits several breaks throughout the day to avoid fatigue.

It can also be very helpful to stretch out your neck and shoulders while treating your client’s neck and shoulders by going through gentle range of motion stretches. It is easy to find a different way to incorporate the stretching of your arms, back and legs in the different movements and techniques you use in your everyday treatments. BEHIND THE SPA DOOR with

Christina Kesaris

of Emena Spa, Miami, Fla. A Green Philosophy

Concept How do you define the concept of your spa? Emena Spa can best be described as organic and green. We are dedicated to our cause with fusions of ancient wellness remedies in harmony with modern technology. Customer service is our top priority. We value cool and realistic convenience.

What are the most popular treatments? Organic facials combined with microdermabrasion are quite popular and our calling card. We just added oxygen to the mix to take it to the next level. Clients’ bodies and skin appreciate it. The secret to our success is bringing in modern machines along with back to nature organic ingredients.

Facility How many treatment rooms and other amenities are there? There are five treatment rooms, a small hair salon with two stylists, and two mani/pedi areas. Guests can enjoy organic teas in our lounge area. Our retail area presents a curated collection of luxury eco and organic products, both local and global, that share in our green philosophy. We focus on quality and integrity.

Leadership Role What daily challenges do you encounter in your position? The biggest challenge is building a team. Issues can include lack of pride and work ethic. Damage control and addressing personalities can be challenging. Ideal team members are business savvy and passionate. Recruiting and talent scouting are my priorities when building or culling a team.

People matter as much as the experience and we try to be as amazing as possible. Beauty is so personal.

How do you manage stress that work brings into your life? Working out. Everything is hectic, and even 20 minutes of high-intensity exercise makes a substantial difference. Working out is my time and it makes me feel good as well as authentic.

What takes most of your time every day? Sales and marketing. We are a destination spa and we don’t have foot traffic or a private parking lot. Therefore, we must focus on digital marketing. Our set intention is to just get people in the door.

Team Building What are the specialties of your team members? We have two hair stylists, four nail technicians, four massage therapists, two laser techs, three estheticians and two part-time doctors. One of our most well-known employees is our Foot Master. He has received a following for his 90-minute pedicure technique.

How do you select the people who work with you?

Punctuality is absolutely key. This is demonstrated when they come in early for the interview because it means they did basic research like knowing the address. in retail last year. Our vendors are like partners and we try to always offer what our clients want.

What incentives do you have for your staff to reach these goals? We only offer commission. Some staff members are not sales-oriented and that is okay. I don’t put pressure on them or mess with their professional mindset. I am a sales person and so is the front desk staff, but our products sell themselves for the most part. We are corporate in some ways, but also a customized mom and pop.

Describe your retail area. Our boutique spa has a great layout of 1,700 square feet. Located by the front desk, clients can enjoy our lounge and retail area in a shared space between 200 and 300 square feet. We leave the rest for treatment rooms and salons. Clients have enough space to hang out and check out retail.

Marketing and Publicity What can you tell us about your marketing techniques? We spend the most money on digital advertising because it has proven to be the most effective. Spas should consider finding websites that share the same lifestyle philosophy to attract true quality clientele. I suggest focusing ads to the right target audience and hiring brand ambassadors. Email blasts and a ton of newsletters addressed to our database are huge for us. To entice potential clients, we offer deeply discounted introductory offers with the goal of helping people find out about us.

Exceptional Client Care How do you keep clients loyal? Our online VIP membership program keeps clients happy. Facials are popular with this program. They have a selec-

Non-participating clients get free parking in a nearby lot and 20 percent off all services not in the basket, as well as retail products. We also send loyal clients promotional codes in emails every few months for up to 30 percent off.

Tips for Spa Leaders What are the most important lessons you have learned from failures or challenges that you can share with others in your career path? When you open a business in the wellness industry, you enjoy helping people. One challenging aspect is that there are some people who will only notice your flaws and bash you in online reviews. There is also so much you don’t even know that you don’t know. Try to shake off negativity and try not to take it to heart. Watch out for people trying to get freebies. Be selective; don’t con-

What advice could you give to someone who wants to manage a spa? Be a consistent hustler and ready to offer amazing customer service. Make the investment in recruiting amazing talent. Managers, sales and back of the house are all equally important. The three tiers of the spa should come together in harmony.

If you are posting for a business or brand, you will want to make your broadcasting “Public.” If you are new to Facebook Live and just want to give it a try, you can select “Only Me.” 4. Write a captivating description. Just like a regular status update, this is what appears on your viewers’ News Feeds. To encourage people to tune in, create an inviting and captivating description to give your friends as well as followers a peek at what your broadcast is about. 5. Go LIVE! As soon as you click, Facebook will give you a “3,2,1…” countdown until you are live. As you start streaming, your live video will appear in your News Feed just like any other post. 6. Interact! To keep your viewers engaged, encourage them to interact with your live video by speaking directly to them and answering any questions you receive through the comment section. 7. Click “Finish” to end the broadcast. Once you do this, the video will stay on your Timeline just like any other video or post. You may go back at any time to edit your description, change the privacy settings or delete the video.

You have the option to save your live broadcast to your camera roll once you finish.

WHY USE SOCIAL GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR LIVE MEDIA LIVE BROADCASTING? BROADCAST 5. 1. For businesses and brands, live streaming video content offers a way to reach audiences like never before. Both Facebook Live and Periscope allow companies to generate genuine relationships with consumers by granting exclusive looks at company culture, production, events and management. Also, because live streaming videos facilitate consumer interaction, brands are able to engage with users and receive immediate feedback regarding products, services, important decisions and more. Through Facebook Live and Periscope, you are not only giving viewers and potential customers a glimpse into an otherwise “offlimits” world, you are connecting and interacting with your audience in a genuine and authentic way. Interviews with clients or employees are a great way to get more people involved in your broadcasts. For example, if you are demonstrating a new therapy on a client during your live broadcasts, ask the client questions regarding how their skin feels before and after the service. This gives your viewers real reviews from actual clients that may encourage them to ask questions or request your services.

Make your broadcast visually engaging. Arrange a nice, comfortable setting that is well lit in a location where there are not any distractions.

2.

Encourage viewers to “like” and share your video. If they found it helpful in any way or know someone who would find it beneficial, encourage them to send it along! Incentives such as free products or discounted services are also a great way to encourage people to share your broadcasts as well.

3.

Engage with viewers and commenters. Call them out by name! Your audience will be thrilled to hear you mention their name as you answer their comments and questions LIVE!

4.

Have a friend or coworker watch and respond to your comments from a desktop computer. If viewers or commenters are coming in quick, it’s easy to lose sight of their arrival, and they will quickly disappear below the fold. (This is also beneficial if you are demonstrating a specific product or service and your hands are tied).

Broadcast for at least 10 minutes. This is just enough time to create a large enough audience to spread the word. Keep in mind that the longer your broadcast is, the more likely people are to discover your video and share it with their friends!

6.

Say goodbye before you wrap up. “Thanks for watching!” and “Tune in next time for…” are great ways to let your audience know you are thankful to them for tuning in, while at the same time inviting them to your next LIVE broadcast! 

How spas can give back this holiday season By Caroline Canetti The holiday season is a great time to help your clients de-stress, unwind and pamper themselves. It's also an opportunity to show your clients that you care about them, the community, and causes near and dear to your heart by giving back.

"It's about goodwill,” says Kim Knapp, owner of Skin Apeel Day Spa in Boca Raton, Fla. “Your clients like to see you're supporting the community and not just opening your spa doors for your own financial benefit." Here is how some spas are teaming with charities and non-profit organizations to give back to the community and promote their spa and holiday treatments...

Circuit for a Cause Skin Apeel Day Spa is hosting the beauty-themed in-spa event, "Circuit for a Cause," to benefit Boca Raton Regional Hospital's "MammoVan," which provides mammograms and preventative care to underprivileged women. The $50 ticket includes healthy light bites, green tea "mocktails," raffles, swag bags with donated products from the event's vendors and local businesses, and beauty stations featuring some of the spa's vendors giving out 20-minute treatments. The treatments include a five-minute facelift with micro-current, pre-holiday makeup makeovers, and eye and hand treatments. Raffle tickets will be sold the entire month of the event, as well as the night of, with 100 percent of the proceeds benefiting the charity. The raffle prizes include spa packages and beauty gifts from their sponsors. "This event is a great fit as our spa mission of all we offer must meet the criteria of beauty through wellness philosophy,” says Knapp, who promoted the event via an email blast, social media, and by depositing invitation cards in clients' bags when they check out. “We're one of the few fortunate to be busy all year, and as karma would have it, our involvement to lend a hand to worthwhile causes and to support our clients' charitable passions, fuels our own prosperity."

Thanking Military Moms Tamara Friedman, owner of Tamara Spa + Wellness in Farmington Hills, Mich., has been working with the non-profit organization, Michigan Military Moms, since 2008 to treat mothers of military men and women to a day of pampering during the holidays. "Being from Russia, I have a great appreciation for the freedom we have here in the U.S. and for the sacrifices that military families make to keep us safe and protected,” says Friedman. “We know it's hard for them to be away from their children during the holidays so we do this to thank them and let them know how much we support and appreciate them."

YOUR MUST-HAVE GUIDE

Friedman lets MMM choose about 25 local military moms to enjoy a full day of pampering at the spa. Last year, the day included a Cranberry Facial, Peppermint Manicure and Pedicure, and Eggnog Massage, as well as a holiday-themed group lunch (i.e., turkey and all the fixings), a goodie bag with skin care products donated from their vendors and a lifelong gift card for 30 percent off "anything, and anytime." While the spa receives a lot of local press coverage for this every year, the best feedback is from the moms. "They just can't thank us enough. One mom even wrote a thank you poem to me, which was really touching. But they also help spread the word about the spa by sharing their photos from the event on their Facebook," adds Friedman.

Pampering the Elderly

One of the way many ways VIVO Hair Salon & Day Spa in Harpers Ferry, West Va., gives back at the holidays is by helping the elderly in their community unwind, relax, and be cared for with their annual "It's all about you! Dear Mee-Maa" promotion. "We cater this to grandparents and our clients' elderly neighbor or friend because they are always taking care of their families, but often forget themselves, says president Vi Vo Nguyen. “I truly want them to understand their health and well-being is important, and the value of taking care themselves is first and foremost. They deserve to be pampered as much as they pamper their families. It's also a great way to introduce this loving, caring generation to the benefits of the spa world nowadays." VIVO starts spreading the word about the campaign at Thanksgiving through word-of-mouth with their clients, as well as via Facebook and the local newspaper. "We ask people to nominate an elderly woman or man

by sending us a little story of why that person deserves to be pampered. We read through all of the stories and choose the ones that touch our hearts the most," she explains. The chosen ones, usually between 10-30 women and men, receive a body massage, a facial, or a pedicure. "It's also our way to thank the community for being so good to us and keeping us in great business," Friedman adds. "I truly believe our company has grown so much over the past 11 years because of our close relationship with the community, our loyal beloved customers, our charity events, and different ways we share back has a lot to do with that. To give is to receive."

Coat Drive for the Homeless Oasis Day Spa, which has locations in New York City and Westchester, N.Y., has a very simple, but effective way of

spreading goodwill during the holiday season. While the spa donates $20 spa vouchers to various charities and community organizations throughout the year, they also participate in a coat drive for the homeless. The spa joins in their building's annual coat drive by inviting their clients via email and in-spa signage (last year's was an image of the Statue of Liberty wearing a coat shivering) to donate their lightly used coats for those in need. For every coat donated, the spa gives them 10 percent off their next full-price service. "It's first and foremost about doing good for the community," says Bruce Schoenberg, owner of Oasis Day Spa, "but it's also good business. You want to be a company that people feel good about spending their money at. So it spreads goodwill, puts you in a good light, and it feels good to give back. It's important to us."

Gingerbread Dreams As if the title of this treatment isn't relaxing enough, the two-hour Gingerbread Dreams package ($225) at Kelly's Spa at The Mission Inn Hotel & Spa in Riverside, Calif., is a true sensory journey sure to make clients dream of sugarplums. The treatment starts with a warm, 20-minute bubbling hydrotherapy bath soak rich with sweet almond oil and coconut milk. This is followed by a 25-minute head-to-toe body scrub made of spicy, gingersnap brown sugar and whiskey. Next up is a 50-minute massage with warm shea and cocoa butters scented with light, billowy marshmallow notes. As an added treat, guests will be able to enjoy gingerbread cookies during the month of December in the lounge. Also, a local bakery, Casey's Cupcakes, will be offering "Glamorous Gingerbread" cupcakes to spa guests after their treatments. "People tend to focus on the excitement of the holidays, rather than on themselves and their well-being,” says Kelly Roberts, owner of Kelly's Spa and owner/COO of The Mission Inn Hotel & Spa. “So, we've created holiday treatments that are de-stressing and tranquil for our guests." The inspiration for the package came from their hotel-wide gingerbread theme for their 24th Annual Festival of Lights, a five-week holiday festival at the hotel that kicks off November 25th. The spa will be marketing the entire hotel-wide gingerbread theme through various digital and social media channels, as well as leveraging public relations.

Total Restore Holiday Yoga Session Spa Gregorie's in Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., is offering yoga with a little yuletide flare to their clients with the Total Restore Holiday Yoga Session (75 minutes, $115). The yoga session starts with a custom, holiday-inspired essential oil blend called "Warm Wishes," which is a spicy blend of orange, clove and black spruce. A small sample is applied prior to 25 minutes of gentle movement and stretching, which is designed to help clients melt away the stress of the season and focus on some quality “me-time”. Thirty minutes of a restorative yoga sequence follows to allow the mind and body to relax and begin the self-healing process. The final 15 minutes of the ses-

sion is a meditation that helps clients connect to their energy and breath, thus deepening spiritual rejuvenation, relieving tension and realigning their intentions for the holiday season. "During the holidays, we often get caught up in the 'doing' — lists, parties, gift-buying,” says Denie Shae Martinez, Spa Gregorie's Rancho Santa Margarita's registered yoga teacher, licensed massage therapist and essential oil practitioner. “It's a lot of output. This treatment is a great way to check in and tune in. It's crucial to be present and focus on yourself for a bit rather than others, and yoga is an amazing outlet for that." The spa also recommends the Total Restore Holiday Yoga as a pre-session before heading into other treatments. "We often find that when guests are having a facial or massage, it takes

them about halfway through the treatment to fully relax and let loose,” adds Martinez. “A yoga session before a treatment loosens up the body and prepares the mind for an ultimate state of relaxation, therefore making the additional treatments that follow more beneficial." Along with traditional marketing initiatives, Spa Gregorie's also takes a community-focused approach by donating yoga sessions to raffles at local events and fundraisers to promote this treatment.

Winter Blues Departure SenSpa in San Francisco created the Winter Blues Departure (60 minutes, $150) to take on Seasonal Affective Disorder, which is a form of depression that often begins in late fall and runs through winter, thought to be caused by the lack of sunlight. "Winter can wreak havoc on your skin and mood,” says outreach manager Terri Eaton. “So, we created this as a stress-relieving and mood enhancing treatment that improves mental focus while nourishing the body." The treatment starts with a lavender salt scrub, followed by a rain shower. Then a peppermint, rosemary and lavender essential oil blend, created and pre-mixed by lead massage therapist Monica Parks is applied. The client is then wrapped up in a cocoon of warm blankets to help heat up the body, open the pores and let the oil sink into the deeper layers of the skin. As the client is cocooned in the wrap, they are bathed with LED light therapy, which is engineered to enhance and elevate mood. The LED light panel is a two-foot panel that is cov-

Elixir AntiVirus Package Sandy Stroehmann, owner of Elixir Mind Body Massage in Denver, Colo., created the Elixir Anti-Virus Package last holiday season in response to seeing so many clients come in under the weather — and getting her therapists sick. The package (90 minutes, a $229 value offered at a special holiday price of $189 for non-members and $169 for members) was so popular when it debuted last year that she is bringing it back this year. The treatment starts with a dry brushing to stimulate lymphatic circulation and includes reflexology on the hands and feet. This is followed by a full body aromatherapy massage using an essential oil blend of eucalyptus and ling blends, which help promote respiratory health, and a muscle repair blend to ease aching muscles. The mud mask acts as a derivative to drive those essential oils in for an even greater benefit. This is followed by an aromatic herbal steam, which provides flushing and soothing benefits for the skin, lymph, and muscles, and a relaxing lymphatic facial massage to gently ease away any sinus or headache pain. "We wanted to create something that boosts the immune system, but feels really amazing and relaxing as well,” says Stroehmann. “Relaxation and stress relief is a great way to strengthen the immune system too. It's a really popular treatment. The ther-

apists love doing it because it smells so wonderful and guests leave feeling rejuvenated." The spa will begin promoting the package during their Thanksgiving open house, which starts on Black Friday and goes through Cyber Monday. It's also promoted via an email blast, signage in the lobby and restroom, posters on the street, and is featured on their TV screen in the lobby that displays the spa's promotions and services. "Our therapists talk about it to their clients a lot too and we tell our clients to come in for it when they feel a cold coming on or if they're just getting over something," she adds.

Day of Indulgence The Spa & Salon at the Ritz-Carlton Sarasota in Sarasota, Fla., is inviting guests to give the gift of relaxation this holiday season with a Day of Indulgence to gear up before the busy holiday season and to unwind afterward. "We do find people come to the spa around the holidays for different reasons,” says spa director Jenna Laramee. “We often get groups of three to four ladies who come in together to disconnect or have some downtime before what can be a very busy time of year, and others come in for it after as a way to unwind.” The half day package (approximately five hours, $360) includes a 50-minute customized massage, 50-minute facial and 50-minute signature pedicure, as well as lunch on the spa terrace, champagne, complimentary valet parking and access to the spa's healing waters. The full day (approximately seven hours, $500) includes the entire package plus a manicure and blowout at the salon. To Christmas-it-up, they use peppermint massage oil and may serve cider or hot cocoa. A take-home gift is included as well. Last year, the spa ran with the "Naughty or Nice" theme and gave out lavender oil as the "nice" gift and peppermint oil as the "naughty" gift. While most of the spa's business is made up of repeat clientele, Laramee says they do reach out to local community, networking and tourism organizations, such as Visit Sarasota, to promote to groups. "This also helps to reach employers who are looking to give their employees a day of indulgence as a holiday gift or year-end bonus,” he adds. “That's done very well for us."

The Perfect Pairing for Glowing Skin this Holiday by Szilvia Hickman

CINNAMON AND HONEY

are two natural ingredients that have been used for beautification purposes for centuries. Although honey is known for being sticky and cinnamon is deemed spicy, two characteristics not often equated with beneficial skin care topicals, these two amazing ingredients each deliver an abundance of benefits to the skin.

CINNAMON’S SKIN CARE BENEFITS Cinnamon is a deliciously fragrant spice that not only adds flavor to food, it also offers many benefits to skin with its antiseptic, antifungal, antibacterial and anti-aging properties.

CINNAMON AND HONEY

Antimicrobial and antibacterial. Cinnamon’s antimicrobial and antibacterial properties detoxify and kill acne-causing germs and bacteria, as well as anti-inflammatory properties that ease inflammation. Numerous studies on the medicinal effects of cinnamon show that it is particularly effective against resistant bacterial strains. One comprehensive study comparing 13 essential oils analyzed the effect of oils against 55 different bacterial strains. Cinnamon bark oil had the highest anti-microbial activity, demonstrating that it can be used to eliminate various bacterial strains. Antioxidant-packed. This spice contains potent antioxidants and essential minerals – such as magnesium, calcium and iron – that provide nourishment and slow glycation and the aging process in the skin.

Exfoliation. Cinnamon is a great natural complexion enhancer when used in powder form, as it soothes the skin and brightens the complexion by removing dead skin cells, thereby restoring shine and suppleness, in addition to de-clogging pores. Boosts circulation. Cinnamon stimulates blood flow and brings oxygen and blood to the outer surface of the skin, causing minor plumping and a fuller complexion while also promoting new cell turnover that results in healthier looking skin. Improving the circulation and invigorating cell regeneration accelerates the healing process of scars or wounds. Increased circulation also has a detoxifying effect, which helps minimize cellulite.

HONEY’S SKIN CARE BENEFITS Honey has been used as a skin care ingredient for centuries, and it’s easy to understand why. It addresses a wide range of skin conditions including acne, rosacea, eczema and hyperpigmentation, and is compatible with all skin types. Antibacterial and anti-inflammatory. As an antibacterial and anti-inflammatory property, honey is beneficial for inflammatory skin conditions such as acne, eczema, rosacea and even sunburn. Antioxidant-rich. It is very rich in powerful antioxidants (especially polyphenols) that help fight the aging process. Polyphenols work by scavenging free radicals — unstable compounds that can damage healthy cells and compromise their function. Moisturizing. A natural humectant, honey forms a barrier, attracting and locking in moisture from the environment — giving skin that gorgeous, youthful glow.

CINNAMON AND HONEY — A MAGICAL PAIR! As great as each of these two powerhouse ingredients is for skin on their own, the combination of these super-ingredients delivers a unique beauty packed punch.

CINNAMON AND HONEY

Fights acne. Both cinnamon and honey are healing and anti-microbial in nature, inhibiting the growth of certain bacteria and fighting against blemishes and breakouts, making the duo ideal for acne and rosacea sufferers. The anti-inflammatory qualities of honey help prevent the swelling and redness that can develop as a result of acne. Additionally, the high sugar concentration of honey and its acidic properties impair the ability of acne-causing bacteria to replicate.

Exfoliates. The moisturizing properties of honey and the coarse granules and fiber in cinnamon powder combine to make a highly effective yet gentle exfoliator. This natural exfoliation combination stimulates circulation while revitalizing the skin and bringing oxygen and nutrients to the skin’s surface. Honey speeds up the natural exfoliation process by softening the skin, assisting in the removal of dead skin cells to reveal a radiant and glowing complexion.

Like honey, cinnamon has anti-microbial properties and can halt the growth of bacteria and fungi. Cinnamon’s beneficial properties come from the chemical cinnamaldehyde, found in the plant that has been studied for its antibacterial and antifungal properties. The combination of these properties from honey and cinnamon draws toxins out of the pores, heals inflammation and dries out acne.

Foot treatment. Honey heals diabetic foot ulcers while cinnamon softens rough skin, common on this part of the body. The combination of these two ingredients gets rid of cracks and dead skin cells, making the sole soft and healthy to the touch.

Relieves skin itching. Honey and cinnamon both possess antiseptic and antibacterial properties that work wonders to soothe inflamed, irritated or itchy skin. Honey’s unique healing properties make this combo an amazing natural beauty solution for all skin types and many ailments, including insect bites.

Anti-aging. Face or body treatments combining both honey and cinnamon supply powerful antioxidants that counteract the cell-damaging effects of free radicals. This potency slows the aging process of the skin. The circulation invigorating properties of cinnamon flush blood through even the smallest vessels and detoxify the skin while also bringing nutrients to the cells. Honey smooths the skin after the initial stimulation, leaving a nicely glowing complexion.

Skin-plumping. The combination of honey and cinnamon slightly plump the skin, filling out fine lines. This combination can be used to make a lip plumper, leaving lips reddish and fuller. Contraindications and considerations. Cinnamon powder or oil should not be directly applied to the skin on its own as it may cause irritation. Because of its invigorating effect, it should be used in moderation. Since the higher ratio of cinnamon makes a treatment more stimulating, too much of it may be irritating for sensitive skin types, and should not be used on the delicate skin of the eye area. Avoid using honey on clients with pollen or bee allergies. 

In recent years, the “beauty from within trend has been on the rise. There are many reasons for this; most notably the anti-aging and organic movements, increased awareness of the gut-brain-skin axis, the movement of nutrition-based mind-body healing systems from East to West, increasing popularity of holistic and naturopathic approaches to overall health and wellness, and the rapid scientific advancement in the fields of integrative nutrition and nutritional esthetics.

NUTRICOSMETICS

W

ith so many practitioners, including functional and naturopathic doctors, holistic-minded dermatologists, nutritionists, and health coaches serving people with skin issues using both whole foods and dietary supplementbased nutrition — it’s no surprise that a category of supplements specifically focusing on beauty from within has formed. The term "nutricosmetics" is a fusion of "nutraceuticals" and "cosmeceuticals". It was coined to describe dietary supplements that are taken internally, either via pill, powder, chewable form or even intravenous infusion, to support healthy skin function and improve the appearance of the skin, nails and hair. In 2013, the nutricosmetic industry boasted $3.3 billion in sales. According to projections made in a recent report by Transparency Market Research1, the nutricosmetics market is projected to reach $7.1 billion by 2020, and may continue growing at this pace thereafter.

What’s in a nutricosmetic? Nutricosmetics are nutritional supplements, functional foods and beverages that contain performance ingredients and macro and micronutrients that not only support overall health, but are also known specifically for their skin benefits. The following ingredients are popular when used in the form of nutricosmetics, as research has shown them to be highly effective when taken internally:

NUTRICOSMETICS

• Collagen When taken internally, collagen builds resilient, supple skin from the dermis and within other internal connective tissue — areas deeper than topical cosmetics can reach. Collagen pairs well with vitamin C, hyaluronic acid and resveratrol.

• Hyaluronic acid This acid has shown to be more beneficial to the connective tissue when taken internally. A humectant, it has the ability to bind 1,000 times its own weight in water to the cells to increase cellular hydration, which supports cellular function. Hyaluronic acid pairs well with collagen, polyphenol antioxidants and vitamin C.

• Carotenoid antioxidants These pigment-rich phytonutrients are found in the cells of plants, algae and bacteria. Known for their anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting properties, they are especially beneficial for the skin. A subclass of carotenoids known as pro-vitamin A carotenoids are precursors to vitamin A, which the body can metabolize, store and then convert into the right amounts of bioavailable forms of vitamin A, such as retinaldehyde, retinoic acid and retinol. Common provitamin A carotenoids are alpha-carotene, beta-carotene and beta-cryptoxanthin; while lutein, zeaxanthin and lycopene are not2—though they all possess powerful skin-health benefits. Carotenoid antioxidants pair well with vitamins C and E, as well as polyphenol antioxidants, collagen and hyaluronic acid.

• Polyphenols This large family of antioxidants is known to provide photo-protective qualities to the skin. Members include catechins, anthocyanins, lignans and stilbenes 3. Catechins, abundant in

green tea, are known to help improve photo-damaged skin. Resveratrol has free radical-fighting, anti-inflammatory and anti-aging benefits. Ellagic acid has naturally occurring antibacterial and antiviral properties4. Polyphenols tend to work well together, and also pair well with carotenoid antioxidants, collagen and hyaluronic acid.

of topical irritation, inflammation or photosensitivity. Vitamin C pairs well with collagen, B vitamins, hyaluronic acid, vitamin E, carotenoid antioxidants and polyphenol antioxidants.

• B vitamins

This group of polyunsaturated fatty acids has an anti-inflammatory effect on the body. Omega-3s also protect skin cells at the cellular level by helping to strengthen and protect cell membranes, and also to keep water inside of the cells. This action helps skin cells remain hydrated and resilient. Omega-3s pair well with vitamin D3 and other fatsoluble micronutrients.

While biotin (vitamin B7) was one of the first B-vitamins to gain celebrity status for its benefits to the hair, skin, and nails, all B vitamins are beneficial to the skin. In fact, B vitamin deficiency is associated with many skin problems, including acne, photosensitivity, cracked lips, dryness, fine lines, wrinkles, rashes and uneven complexion5. B vitamins work very well when taken together. Pairing B vitamins with digestive enzymes may help them digest properly, while alcohol consumption may block absorption.

• Vitamin C

• Coenzyme Q10

Vitamin C is well known for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immune boosting and cell regenerative properties — but it’s also a required cofactor for collagen production, which is why many collagen supplements also contain vitamin C. Oral supplementation effectively delivers the benefits of this nutrient without any risk

Coenzyme Q10 — also known as ubiquinone —actually resides primarily in the stratum corneum. A 2003 Italian study showed that oral supplementation of CoQ10 actually helped increase the amount of CoQ10 in the stratum corneum, especially when synergistically blended with cofactors selenium

and vitamin E, and paired with topical application of CoQ106. The primary job of CoQ10 is to protect the skin against sun damage, and research has also shown it to be effective at wrinkle reduction. CoQ10 requires the presence of other antioxidants such as vitamins A, C and E to remain intact and provide benefits.

• Probiotics These live strains of bacteria and microflora help strengthen the microbiome, supporting both gut and skin health. Probiotics are found in many supplement forms — primarily capsules, liquids and extracts. They are popular additions to nutricosmetic supplement packs and shakes. Lactobacillus, L. acidophilus and B. bifudum are strains associated with positive acne outcomes, and are the most popular strains used in nutricosmetic blends. Probiotics are beneficial when accompanied by digestive enzymes and/or prebiotics.

• Enzymes Ingesting enzymes supports healthy digestion, which leads to better absorption of nutrients from food and supplements. Many skin conditions originate from digestive issues such as food intolerances, small intestine bacterial overgrowth, leaky gut syndrome, constipation and diarrhea — any of which indicate an interference with the body’s detox pathways, often resulting in a breakout or flare up. Digestive enzymes help the body break down macronutrients and prevent toxins from building up in the small and large intestines. Enzymes work well with B vitamins, and in synergy with probiotics.

• Minerals Copper, magnesium, manganese and zinc are cofactors that work together with other micronutrients for enhanced function and efficacy, primarily to help boost the skin’s barrier function. For example, zinc helps with

vitamin A transport in the blood7, and selenium works with vitamin E to raise the antioxidant levels of glutathione in the skin8. Stress depletes the body and skin of minerals, so supplementing with minerals is often helpful for individuals with high levels of stress.

• Glutathione "Glutathione is your body's most powerful antioxidant and detoxifying agent, and it's also something of a well-kept secret," says Dr. Frank Lipman9. It’s known to reduce inflammation, protect immunity, support healthy melanocyte function and improve hyperpigmentation. Because glutathione’s metabolism depends largely on healthy liver function, transdermal and IV infusions of glutathione are the preferred delivery systems. Acetyl glutathione, available in oral supplements, is a very bioavailable form and is easy for the body to absorb and utilize. It pairs well with selenium and vitamin E.

NUTRICOSMETICS

Important considerations While the rising demand of nutricosmetics presents a new revenue stream for spas, caution must be used when incorporating nutricosmetics into your business. Estheticians are not licensed medical professionals and must not imply that a dietary supplement or nutricosmetic food product prevents or treats a skin condition disease or disorder, or that it has a physiological change on the skin. Working with supplements requires stringently remaining within one’s scope of practice. An esthetician can consult clients on nutricosmetics in this way: "The ingredients in this product have been studied for their positive effects on x condition. Take as directed on the bottle, but consult with your licensed health professional before starting or stopping any internal supplement regimen." Spas can strengthen (and bring credibility to) this component of their business by establishing referral relationships with licensed nutritionists, dietitians and doctors. 

A True Insider Shares His Formulas for Retail Success

Business Advice For Beauty Professionals With Tim Maurer

owner of of Mukha Spa in Columbus, Ohio

Services and Retail What kind of makeup treatments do you offer? We offer bridal and special occasion application and makeup lessons. We do more than 200 brides per year. They expect perfection, as do we. Our makeup lessons are truly unique. There is no trial by fire here. Every makeup artist has an assistant to help create face charts so our clients can see it is as easy as paint by numbers. We then have clients remove the makeup we have done and apply it themselves with the charts as

guides. We do hold their hand during the makeup lesson.

When did you decide to implement makeup into your spa? I started my career as a makeup artist for Patti LaBelle, The Dixie Chicks and Faith Hill as well as in movies before I started my makeup line. Cosmetics have been part of my spa for 15 years. My career path evolved to medical esthetics at my makeup studio, which also offers skin care.

Which makeup services have the most success? Both of our makeup lessons are quite popular. Lesson #1 is one and a half hours and includes face charts for day and night. In Lesson #2 we show oncology patients how to do their own lash and brow extensions.

What approaches did you take to implement the services? My training program is a 750-hour in-house program. It all started with trial and error. I looked at textbooks for guidance and I understood it all starts with product knowledge because insight is key. My first class participants are all still working in the industry. This foundation in knowledge extends to the client. We seek to educate the client to understand how the products work in general as well as for their particular needs.

Team Members

In the 15 years Mukha Spa has been doing makeup, only two team members have been let go. I am careful to hire people whose temperaments fit with our culture. The first interview is a brief 10-minute interview and the second interview is done with higher-ups. Personality does count and we take that into heavy consideration. We bring in a model for candidates to do a facial, daytime makeup and then a nighttime look. We hire for success and longevity.

Are estheticians trained to promote makeup services after each treatment?

Fifty percent of our business is made up of our makeup services. We charge $150 to sit with someone. Service is a service. Consider not giving away makeup services as add-ons because clients want to be educated about products and applications.

Of course! Our team members are cross-trained in every service. We encourage clients to book their next appointment while they are still at the spa. We give them 10 percent off, which is essentially taxes, for doing so. This method keeps our schedule packed.

Makeup area

Marketing

What is the surface area of the makeup area compared to the rest of the spa?

How do you promote your makeup services?

Our surface area is 2,400 square feet, and it is split evenly between retail and service. The layout has 1,200 square feet in the front and back with three esthetician rooms. We have a high retail percentage; every client leaves with something.

What prompted you to choose that design? The front of the spa is different than the treatment cabins in back. Clients in the front can choose from jewelry and hair accessories. We go for top

must book six to eight weeks in advance. We promote new team members at a reduced price to build their book. I do not take on any new clients, but I will oversee. I am old school, but it all works well.

Do you have rituals or methods of creating positive energy for your spa? We meet often and do not make meetings a festival of hate. We start off with positives and then we can discuss what needs to be addressed.

What does your business do that makes it unique from the competition? We take our service very seriously. Give back to your clients to earn their loyalty. We make clients feel amazing because word of mouth is key. We pay meters, which is a nominal 50 cents to make them feel special. We bring some nosh and water out. Private parties are held only on our closed days.

What advice would you pass along to spa owners? Insist on perfection.

Banish

dark s e l c r Ci

THE RED LIPSTICK HACK by Maureen Castellon

Dark under-eye circles may have some clients feeling that a raccoon, panda or lemur is their spirit animal. These dark circles can be a persistent problem for some, despite getting adequate rest and proper nutrition. They may be a result of genetics or the result of oxygenated blood pooling beneath the thin, almost transparent skin of the under eye. This may become worse with age as the loss of subcutaneous fat means that the circles are harder to mask.

IMAGE

One common expectation clients have for makeup services is to look like a better version of themselves, which often equates to looking well-rested. Rarely will a client request blacked out eyes; instead, they will come into the spa asking for help with under-eye circles that may be caused by lack of sleep. To add further insult to this beauty bane, the circles may still show under a layer of concealer despite great efforts to hide them. In fact, concealer may leave the wearer with the opposite problem – white circles that draw attention to the problem area. Until now, there has not been a method to completely mask this dark pigmentation. In January 2016, a beauty vlogger shared a dark circles hack that has now become a global sensation. Her trick is not to counteract but complement, using the color wheel as a guide. All that is needed is red lipstick, a brush and concealer. Spas can make this trick their own with specialized formulas (see sidebar) and exploring the color wheel for further coverage options. COLOR WHEEL The color wheel is based on color theory. All shades on the spectrum are based on three primary hues: red, yellow and blue. These colors are opposites and balance each other. On a color wheel that incorporates both primary and secondary colors, orange-red tones are directly across from bluish-green selections. Dark under-eye circles are generally green or blue in tone, so using the color wheel as a guide, the opposite of blue will be oranges and reds. Applying a shade of red that complements undertones will neutralize undereye circles.

|

BANISH DARK CIRCLES

DETERMINING UNDERTONES One key aspect to nailing this color correction hack is to identify the client’s undertones. A simple way to do so is by looking at the veins on the wrist. Blue and purple veins indicate cool tones that can be paired with cherry reds or wines. Green veins signal warm tones that are complemented by orange-reds, as they erase sallowness. A mix of cool and warm tones creates a neutral color palette that can be versatile regardless of which shade is used. Another good marker is the client’s hair color - blondes should be paired with pinks, while brunettes are well-suited to darker shades.

PROTOCOL As with most trends that are birthed on social media, it is best to test a small area of a client’s skin to see if this hack has an impact on their dark circles. It is key to note that lipstick should be dabbed on lightly. Applying as one does to lips simply does not work. Use an eyeshadow brush to dab a small amount on the under-eye area. While you are waiting for the color to set and before blending, you might show clients how dramatic they look as a fun way to pass the time. Once set, after about 60 seconds, apply the client’s preferred concealer to the reddened area with a makeup sponge. Dark circles should not show through the layer of concealer.

FINISHING TOUCH

TIPS • Take a light hand with whichever shade of red lipstick suits the client’s skin tone • Consider using cream lipstick to create a seamless look • Liquid rather than stick concealers are easier to apply on top of this hack

Steps to the super matte trend by Hannah Hatcher

If

you follow makeup artists on social media, you may have noticed a recent surge in powder-based makeup application, often tagged as #baking. For those of you thinking, “But I can’t even cook,” don’t worry; this trend doesn’t require stepping foot in the kitchen! Baking makeup is not entirely new. The technique has been used for years in the drag community and was also very popular for party makeup in the 1990s. Baking is a great way to create a flawless finish with an incredible highlight and hold makeup in place. This explains why performers under hot stage lights and club goers dancing and sweating all night favor this technique. Thanks to social media makeup artists and YouTube tutorials, baking is back and bigger than ever. In the

quest to create the looks of Instagram and Snapchat filters in real life, we are seeing baking used more often. The idea of baking is to apply and then remove excess powder makeup to provide coverage and highlight. It involves applying A LOT of concealer, adding a loose setting powder over the top and letting it “bake” for minutes before brushing away what remains atop the skin. This allows the heat from the face to meld or set the makeup, producing an intense amount of coverage while also highlighting under the eye area. This technique can be used over contouring as well. The heat of the skin changes the texture of the products during the baking time. It also provides a matte finish that looks flawless in photographs.

THE BUZZ ON BAKING

This comes as a huge switch from the strobing trend, which creates a shimmery and dewy complexion highlight. The supermatte finish highlight is a more seamless match to contour, and will leave your client with a chiseled look. Baking requires few products and tools, but making it look flawless takes time and practice. Follow these steps for a perfect baking result:

Hydrate the eye area! Because this look has a matte finish, it’s important to pump the eye area with moisture. Plumping up the eye area helps keep the skin around them from looking “thirsty” or dry.

Apply an intense amount of concealer under the eye area. To achieve that truly flawless look that is void of creases, a hefty amount of concealer is recommended. Opt for one that contains skin nourishing oils such as moringa seed. While concealers can sometimes lead to creasing under the eye, that effect can be avoided with this method and proper setting.

Make sure to blend the concealer out as smooth as possible, using your fingers (body heat helps a lot), or try a damp makeup sponge to help soften the lines of demarcation. Just when you think you have enough concealer, add a little more.

Set the concealer. Use a damp makeup sponge to apply a loose translucent powder over the top. Make sure to really pack the powder on over the top.

Now, it’s time to bake! The time varies anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes, so be sure your client has time for this technique and is not rushing to an event.

Remove the excess powder. Using a large fluffy brush, sweep away any remaining loose powder that hasn’t “baked” into the skin. Any fall out from eyeshadow application will be swept away as well (two benefits in one move!). What is left behind is a super smooth, bright, flawless finish that has some pretty amazing staying power.

While baking can work wonders for on camera or performance looks, it isn’t ideal for every client. If you observe the experts creating baking makeup tutorials online, you will notice they have one thing in common: youth! The reason for this is that unfortunately, wrinkling around the eye area does not pair well with the baking phenomenon. Because baking requires product to be packed under the eye, any sort of deep texture evades that smooth finish baking is known for. Also keep in mind that baking may not be ideal for an everyday look. It is a very heavy application, and looks so in real life to the naked eye. In photo shoots with high definition camera flashes and professional lighting, it looks amazing. In bathroom lighting and an iPhone, not so much. Just like baking in the kitchen, it takes practice to make this technique work well. In the meantime, well, thank goodness for all the great filter apps on our phones. Happy baking!  126

TIP:

When applying the layer of concealer, try applying it in an upside down triangle under the eye and blend out toward the temple area to amplify the highlight.

TIP:

During this waiting time, instead of just sitting and baking, start working on the eye area. Wing out that perfect cat eye, or go bold and blend out the perfect smoky eye. Do not worry about any fall out that may happen, as it will be swept away with the next step.

TIP:

Make sure the area that you bake looks seamless against your client’s foundation, and blend out any hard edges or lines with a damp sponge or even a small damp blending brush.

The K-Beauty trend dictates that peel off products are all the rage. Cailyn Cosmetics' Cocoon Lip Stains invite clients to kiss a bit longer with four provocative shades that are smear proof for up to 10 hours once peeled. Pigments are suspended in a polyvinyl base to glide on lips with a slick texture. Simply apply color to client lips, let the color saturate for 10 minutes and slowly peel off to reveal a matte stain that could start its own kissing booth.
