But what in the world are Microgreens? Bigger than a “sprout,” but smaller than a “baby green,” microgreens are young seedlings of edible vegetables and herbs harvested seven to 25 days after germination. Bearing a wide variety of shapes, flavors and colors, microgreens are nutrient-dense powerhouses! During early development, vegetables need a full arsenal of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants to support their growth. Harvested when so small, all of those nutrients are delivered directly to you!

More vitamins, nutrients…

Microgreens such as broccoli, radishes, clovers and Swiss cress sprouts have amazing topical benefits. When combined, these microgreens create a potent blend that contains twice the amount of Vitamin C found in tomatoes, more beta-carotene than carrots and provides significant sources of Vitamin E and Vitamin K.

And beneficial enzymes!

On top of all those yummy beauty benefits, it is estimated that there are up to 100 times more beneficial enzymes in microgreens than raw vegetables. The rapidly growing sprouts need these

ACUPRESSURE FOR HEALTHY

SKIN

Taking facials to the next level by Linda Marrical Every day in the spa and wellness industry, it seems that we are learning about modalities used in the traditional schools of Asian medicine and how we can incorporate them into our practice. Acupressure and acupuncture are techniques that top the list. The only difference between acupressure and acupuncture is that one uses the insertion of fine needles and the other uses finger pressure. They have the same effect on the body.

skin acupressure for healthy skin

It is believed that acupressure predates acupuncture and is about 4,000 years old. The Chinese is not the only Asian system that uses acupressure. Ayurveda treatments from India, Japanese and Tibetan medicine use acupressure and acupuncture. However Ayurveda and Tibetan medicine use a different “energetic map” than the Chinese and Japanese, often causing confusion to Westerners. For example, “chakras” are from Ayurveda, and not part of the Chinese/Japanese system at all. The following concepts explained here are from classical Chinese medicine.

HOW DOES ACUPRESSURE WORK? There are 361 primary acu-points and 270 extraordinary points used in classical Chinese medicine. The following protocol or method described in this article is called local/distal. It starts with the client’s awareness that an area hurts. A “local” acu-point is chosen in that area of pain along with a “distal” acupoint that has some relationship to the local point and is held at the same time. When the client feels the additional pressure on the “distal” point, their awareness and energy shifts, helping to release the tension in the local area. The distal point not only has some type of a relationship to the local point, it also acts to instruct the body. For example, a person has a migraine headache with a pattern of pain that starts in the neck and travels to the eye area. A “local” gallbladder point is selected on the neck area around C2/C3 along with a “distal” gallbladder point on the face that also instructs the body to release heat (a major cause of migraine). While this sounds simple enough, an understanding of which acupoints to select requires years of study and practice.

ALL PURPOSE REMEDY In Chinese medicine, acupressure has traditionally been used to treat just about every physical, emotional and spiritual illness. It is the treatment of choice for everything from migraines, chronic back pain, fatigue and sleep disorders, just to name a few. Considering the advances of modern medicine, acupressure primarily addresses muscle and joint pain. It is wonderful for inflammatory conditions such as arthritis and tendonitis, and serves as a valuable tool for releasing tension and stress on both a physical and emotional level.

WESTERN ADAPTATION Because acupressure is often used to treat stress related conditions, the Western approach incorporates mind/ body processing techniques that mix body work with principles of Western psychology. The body is separated into

five segments where muscle tension is commonly carried from emotional stress: the ocular, jaw, chest/shoulders, solar plexus and hips. When working with the body, it is not necessary to give words to what created the stress, but rather to experience and release the tension. It is important to remember that when we are working on a client we are working not only on the body but the emotional level as well. Using some basic acupressure techniques can not only help your client look better but feel better as well, which is the highest level of service we can provide. There is a saying, “What has a front, has a back.” Therefore, chronic neck tension is related to ocular and jaw segments. In my own practice, I have noticed that as the tension released in the muscles, fine lines around the eyes and mouth soften, and the client sees that they look better after a treatment.

skin acupressure for healthy skin

This effect is what inspired me to use acupressure as a type of beauty treatment mixed with massage, cupping and other techniques, and I developed this protocol that takes the guesswork out of what points to use and how.

SI 19

SI 17

POINTS OF PROTOCOL When doing facials, the esthetician is always working in the ocular and jaw segment, so it is easy to add a few acupoints into the massage portion of the treatment. The following are points that can be used as self-acupressure, and on clients that not only addresses fine lines by relaxing facial muscles around the eyes and jaw, but also promotes circulation, releases emotional stress and just feels good! It is best to use the acupoints before applying massage techniques. The points are held bilaterally; by holding identical points at the same time they act as local/distal points to each other. Most of the acu-points are bilateral, so using the identical point as the local/ distal combination is sure to bring some release of muscular tension. Eye points Starting with the eye area, hold BL 1, found on the inside of the eye, at the bottom of the orbital base and press up toward the top of the head. This point helps release the eye muscles, which reduce the frown lines between the eyes. It is used traditionally to help everything from eye pain to redness, itching and blurry vision. Hold the point for a minute or two and then move along to the next point, GB 14. GB 14 is found 1 cun above the eyebrow, in line with the pupil. A cun

18

march2017

LNEonline.com

is a Chinese anatomical inch, which is the width of the top of the client’s thumb. Many people have a small indentation on the forehead where the point is located. Press directly down on the points to release the muscles of the forehead; this softens lines on the forehead. Traditionally the point was used for headaches and eye issues. Again, hold the points for a couple of minutes and move to SJ 23, located on the side of the head, in a depression off the orbital bones at the base of the eyebrow. Traditionally the point is for headaches and eye issues. Press directly in to the point to release the eye muscles. Repeat the sequence of all three points twice more before moving onto the jaw points. Jaw points The jaw segment releases lines around the mouth. The first point is SI 17, found on the mandible (jawbone) in a depression where the SCM intersects. This point is great for TMJ related pain. After holding for a minute or two move to SI 19. SI 19 is located on the face at the center of the ear. Ask the client to open

their mouth a little; the point is in the depression. This is another TMJ point, but it is also used for ear problems such as tinnitus and hearing loss. As with the eye points, repeat the sequence two more times. Once the acupressure has released the muscles, massage increases the circulation and the client feels and looks relaxed. Although acupressure/acupuncture requires extensive study, using this small protocol greatly benefits your clients. Don’t be afraid to try — you cannot hurt your client if your technique is not perfect! Encourage your clients to apply the points using self-acupressure daily for lasting results. 

PREMATURE

AGING 20

march2017

LNEonline.com

WARNING SIGNS, CAUSES AND SOLUTIONS Holding onto our youth and delaying aging is a universal goal. As we get older, we expect and accept some of the minor signs of aging, especially if they are consistent with chronological aging. However, for some individuals the symptoms of aging are more pronounced and arrive much earlier. Premature aging is by definition unnatural aging; however, it can be both prevented and treated with professional skin care.

skin premature aging

THE

signs of premature skin aging are often quite visible, and can be very disturbing as they are unexpected. It is important that skin care professionals identify these signs and guide their clients in the treatment of this form of aging skin. As always, the best care is one that includes a combination of both professional treatments as well as proper daily home care. Let’s examine some of the more common signs as well as comprehensive treatment plans for premature aging skin.

CAUSES OF PREMATURE AGING

While the most common cause of premature aging is environmental damage, lifestyle choices and medical conditions can also augment the signs of aging at an earlier age. Smoking, facial mimicry and sleep deprivation have been shown to accelerate the aging process. While many of these forms of aging eventually manifest themselves in all individuals, when these visible cues exhibit themselves in one's 20s or early 30s, it sets off the first alarms that premature aging is occurring.

SIGN #1: Sun Spots The appearance of hyperpigmentation on the face or limbs in one’s 20s is evidence of early environmental damage. UV damage, which can occur in individuals as young as toddlers and throughout their teens, can lead to visible discoloration, uneven pigmentation and sun spots, referred to medically as solar lentinges. While it’s best to prevent this with the use of a sunscreen system with UVA and UVB protection starting at a very early age, it is never too late to begin.

For existing sun spots, begin with chemical peels and lightening facials. These professional treatments combine resurfacing acids and tyrosinase enzyme inhibiting ingredients (e.g., Vitamin C, natural and unnatural quinines) to both lift existing spots and suppress new ones, respectively. Although not typically seen in younger skin, stubborn or deeper hyperpigmentation can be targeted with IPL and Fraxelated lasers in which pulses of energy are used to degrade the darker pigment.

SMOKING, FACIAL MIMICRY AND SLEEP DEPRIVATION HAVE BEEN SHOWN TO ACCELERATE THE AGING PROCESS. 22

march2017

LNEonline.com

TYPICAL ONSET AGE: Early to late 20s. APPEARANCE: Uneven skin color or specific sun spots of darker pigment.

CAUSE: Sun damage. PROFESSIONAL RECOMMENDATIONS: Peels that double up as both tyrosinase inhibitors as well as exfoliation enhancers to remove spots. Fraxelated lasers that have an affinity to absorb darker pigment.

RETAIL TREATMENTS: Sunscreen containing an SPF 30+ sunblock. Vitamin C and its derivatives to suppress hyperpigmentation and to act as a mild peel to lift and remove existing pigmentation. Natural quinones or hydroquinone can be used to suppress the formation of new pigmentation.

skin premature aging

SIGN #2: Fine Lines & Wrinkles A second very common form of aging skin is the appearance of fine lines, especially around the eyes, forehead and sometimes the lips. Oftentimes these wrinkles are due to lifestyle habits such as smoking or persistent frowning, pursing of the lips, so-called expression lines, or favoring one side of the face while sleeping. The cause of these fine lines or wrinkles is due to the loss of collagen and elastin within the skin, which would typically be present in younger skin to resist the formation of these wrinkles. Degradation of collagen, the natural scaffolding within the skin, or reduction

in new collagen can also be brought about by smoking, which stimulates free radical damage, tissue degradation and blood supply restriction in skin. Of course, when combined with UVinduced damage, the rate of collagen loss is only compounded, leading to the earlier onset of visible fine lines. It is important to be on an antiaging daily regimen that incorporates retinoids, niacinamide, peptides, stem cells and antioxidants. Along with daily care, professional peels that contain similar bio-actives along with resurfacing acids help jump start the cellular renewal process.

TYPICAL ONSET AGE: Early to late 20s. APPEARANCE: Fine lines around eyes,

lips, forehead.

CAUSE: Lifestyle choices. PROFESSIONAL RECOMMENDATIONS: Peels that double up as both age inhibitors and exfoliation enhancers to jump start cellular renewal.

RETAIL TREATMENTS: Strong

nighttime retinoids and at home resurfacing treatments. Stem cell, Q-10 and alpha-lipoic serums.

SIGN #3: Dehydration A third sign of premature aging is skin that both feels and looks visibly dry. Dehydrated skin feels itchy and may have flaking, peeling or even cracking, especially in extreme climates. Typically young skin is thicker and natural oil production is greater, preventing dehydration along with visible dryness. Dry skin is one sign that there is a deterioration in the water binding structures of the epidermis and the dermis. For instance, there can be an increase in transepidermal water loss (TEWL), but also a reduction in the efficiency of the skin’s natural barrier (water retaining) functions. The reduction in the production of the GAG proteins (glycosaminoglycans) in the dermis, one of skin’s natural moisturizing components,

24

march2017

LNEonline.com

can also contribute to dry skin. The best offense to address these changes is a good defense. Although seemingly counterintuitive, gentle exfoliation increases epidermal turnover, making the stratum corneum — the outer layer of the epidermis, more efficient and improve the skin’s natural barrier properties. A daily regimen containing serums that mimic GAGs including seaweeds, hyaluranates and plant extracts replenish and plump dehydrated skin. Additionally, a strong nighttime regimen including multiple peptides and retinoids helps the skin repair itself. Adding in a moisturizer high in squalene and silicone-like molecules that form a barrier gives immediate relief to the symptoms of dry skin.

Professional treatments could include a series six of hydrating peels including vitamin peels and a maintenance program of monthly vitamin peels.

TYPICAL ONSET AGE: Mid 20s. APPEARANCE: Dry, flaky, itchy skin. CAUSE: Oxidative damage, poor skin nutrition.

PROFESSIONAL RECOMMENDATIONS: Vitamin peels to thicken the skin.

RETAIL TREATMENTS: Hyaluronates, seaweeds, vitamin A, vitamin B, barrier forming moisturizers.

skin premature aging

SIGN #4: Sensitivity & Inflammation

26

Dry, sensitive and inflamed skin of the neck and the exposed “V” of the chest in one’s 20s and 30s is also indicative of premature aging caused by ultraviolet radiation, free radical oxidation or a combination of both. The skin appears patchy, discolored and uneven. It may also take on a leather-like texture. A home care regimen consisting of powerful plant-based antioxidants (berries, teas, coffee) and anti-inflammatory agents (bisabolol, chamomile, azulene,

oat, argan) and vitamin B is recommended. Ingredients that help improve skin color and the symptoms of dehydration as described above should be considered. Additionally, professional treatments should exhibit both regenerating and healing properties. Due to the sensitive nature of the skin of the neck and décolleté, strong peels are not recommended. Peptides and vitamin B peels along with gentle non-acid enzyme treatments are most beneficial.

The loss of support in the underlying tissue of the skin causes the cheeks and jawline to sag and deep wrinkles to appear. Collagen and elastin are the primary two proteins that give the skin its support and bounce back. These two proteins along with the subcutaneous tissues of muscle and fat give skin its fullness. Typically these highly visible changes in skin do not start to appear until one’s late 40s, and with proper home care it can be pushed back to the late 50s. If this loss of elasticity and fullness is experienced in one’s early 30s, it is a sign of premature aging. This change is mostly due to the loss of collagen and elastin, which is oftentimes due to photo damage. Additionally, a loss of fatty tissue or muscle mass, although less common at these younger ages, can also contribute to the lax skin of the cheeks and jaw. Fat injections and fillers offer a very effective and affordable medical treatment solution. For more advanced medical treatments, Fraxelated lasers heat the

dermis to stimulate new collagen and tighten fibrous bands. Peels also offer a great benefit to stimulating cellular renewal as well as improving skin color, texture and hydration. Depending on the severity of the symptoms, one or more of the above modalities can be combined in a series of at least six treatments.

Advanced home care is the most effective tool that can be used to both repair the damaged skin but also prevent future damage. This is true for all five of the above premature aging symptoms. Oftentimes individuals wait until they are in their 30s or even 40s to begin home care; however, at this stage the damage has already been done. Every skin care professional should educate clients about the risks of premature aging from a very early age, even with clients as young as teenagers. Healthy, beautiful skin comes from a healthy lifestyle that is learned and practiced early on.  Gül Ç. SIGNATURE TREATMENTS The spa offers several luxury skin care and body ritual treatments to ensure their guests attain the highest level of relaxation. A particular body ritual that the spa practices, the Luxury Chardonnay Ritual ($455, 120 minutes), is a full body bliss treatment that includes an antioxidant body scrub and wrap. The spa suggests this particular treatment to clients battling aging and to those seeking a glowing and rejuvenated appearance. Using the grape seed extract of Chardonnay, which has powerful anti-aging properties to bring a glow to the skin, the treatment begins with a full body scrub that lasts about 30 minutes. Following the scrub, the spa therapist applies an antioxidant defense body wrap to pull out impurities; during which the client receives a nourishing scalp massage. The treatment concludes with a 50-minute full body massage using pure Chardonnay oil.

TRAINING The Spa at Four Seasons New York Downtown has designated trainers in 38

each area of the spa from the reception area to the locker room. These trainers are put through the spa’s extensive training program themselves. “Training is the foundation on which our company was built,” states Damien Craft, Four Seasons' Senior Spa Director for the Americas. Departmental trainers are full time employees and each has an elected area of the spa in which they are stationed. Craft continues, “They are working side by side with their peers and are there to ensure that everyone is achieving the standards in their area. They coach in the moment.” For example, if a front desk agent forgot to thank a guest on their way out, the designated trainer coaches the employee that they missed a particular standard and provides examples of ways the staff member can ensure that they do not repeat the same mistake. The spa also reviews staff performance on an ongoing basis and conducts full standard tests with each employee a minimum of twice a month. These performance tests are scheduled with each employee to assure they are not only up

to par on the services the spa provides, but that they are exercising impeccable customer service techniques and habits. Performance tests are recorded and assessed during each employee’s annual review. The spa’s technology includes several software programs that track the progress of three categories: people, product and profit; new goals are set periodically based off of those statistics. Finally, the spa also utilizes their resource partners to come and train the treatment staff on the products they use. “This is effective because we learn directly from the source and gain in-depth knowledge of not only the products, but the stories behind the products. This allows our staff to be expertly informed on all aspects of the product line and builds a high level of trust with our clients,” Craft states. To guarantee dedication and enthusiasm from employees, Craft offers the staff incentives based on who they are and their particular interests. He comments, “Some may like treatments, some may want products and some prefer cash bonuses.”

MARKETING Because the spa is affiliated through the worldwide Four Seasons Hotel Corporation, they have the ability to reach an extensive number of existing Four Seasons travelers through their expansive database. Though in today’s market, it is essential to have a presence on social media sites including Facebook and Twitter, which is why the spa has acquired a dedicated team to promote special offers and promotions through all outlets. The Spa at Four Seasons New York Downtown also prides itself on the “word of mouth” method, assuring that each guest is provided a worldclass experience upon each visit. “By delivering services of the highest caliber to our guests we can assure they are telling their peers, which translates into repeat and new business for the spa,” Craft mentions.

SPECIAL EVENTS AND PROMOTIONS During their annual marketing and budget strategy meeting, the spa

owners and staff discuss new ways to evolve their menu and offerings; revisions and improvements are implemented for each following year. Spa owners also discuss four upcoming seasonal treatments that change each quarter at this time. The spa also plans something special each year for Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day. In addition, the spa also partners with a local clothing line to help crosspromote their brands. “Their vision of luxury skills and cashmere were a perfect fit with the expectations of quality that our guests expect from a Four Seasons experience,” Craft states. The spa partners with the owner and the designer of the clothing line to create a variety of trunk shows throughout the year.

RETAIL When selecting retail brands, The Spa at Four Seasons New York Downtown conducts extensive research to find the perfect combination of luxury, exclusivity and local presence. The spa

staff visits several trade shows each year to consider new products to bring on board and also attends fashion shows during market season in New York, Los Angeles and Las Vegas. The spa is the only hotel spa in the U.S. that carries the specific products that they do. “We want to provide services that our clients can only receive in our spa,” Craft mentions. The spa also carries wellknown product lines that combine the finest minerals, vitamins, essential oils and natural ingredients sourced from around the globe. To incentivize clients to purchase their retail products, the spa offers one small, traditional gift with each purchase, such as a product sample. During the holiday season, they include an item with their logo with the purchase of a gift card and give spa credit for future visits if a certain dollar amount is spent for the particular retail purchase. “These have all been very effective methods of retail sales in our spa,” Craft commented. Hypnotherapy

massage A dynamic duo BOOSTING THE POWER OF MASSAGE Hypnotism.

This happens when a mysterious gentleman puts you in a trance by dangling a watch on a chain and then makes you bark like a dog, right? Not quite. That may be the stereotypical shtick of a stage hypnotist, but the healing discipline of hypnotherapy is better described as a state of focused relaxation in which a person is more responsive to suggestion. Every massage therapist knows that some people find it easier to relax than others. It comes to some clients naturally, while others find it difficult to let go of tension, even during an excellent massage. When hypnosis is utilized with a massage

in just the right way, a perfect, complementary healing balance can be established, achieving levels of relaxation and health that neither hypnosis or massage can do on its own.

HOW IT WORKS Imagine combining the affirming touch of a massage, which alone puts the client into a highly relaxed state, with guided visualizations and healing suggestions that invite the mind to participate in the process! Hypno-massage utilizes the natural trance state elicited by massage to deepen relaxation on every level. It involves the integration of bodywork

Debunking Misconceptions About Hypnosis

BENEFITS OFFERED BY HYPNOSIS MASSAGE

 The client will not be asleep during hypnosis; it is a deep state of relaxation.  The client cannot be made to do or say anything they do not wish to do.  The client cannot become “stuck” in hypnosis.

with hypnotic suggestion to create a complete mind and body experience. Hypnosis puts the mind into an alpha state, which quiets the client’s mind during the massage. While in this state, the muscles respond more readily to the massage and the benefits last longer. Hypno-massage allows a state of enhanced relaxation in which deeper parts of the mind become accessible; this in turn allows the muscles to relax more than they would during a routine massage. The unique combined practice of hypno-massage helps clear physical and emotional trauma while speeding up the overall healing process. Unwanted feelings and issues are healed as the body is slowly relaxed and the mind is taken through a wonderful visualization. It is through this subconscious state that clients can experience a greater awareness of both body and mind.

The length of a hypno-massage varies depending on the client’s needs. Rates fluctuate significantly by region and setting.

TOGETHER FORM. In together form, the hypno-massage therapist uses massage as a hypnosis induction. In other words, the practitioner performs the hypnosis and massage simultaneously.

WHO CAN BENEFIT?

A TYPICAL SESSION

Say you saw it in LNE & Spa and circle #140 on reader service card

After filling out an intake form and discussing the individual’s goals for the hypno-massage, the client is guided into a deep state of relaxation through visualization. Even in this dream-like state the client remains alert, has the ability to speak and remains open to positive suggestions. The client can reject any suggestions that don’t feel comfortable for them at any time. After the session, the client emerges refreshed and feels ready to incorporate the positive suggestions from the session into his or her life.

Anyone who is susceptible to hypnosis that can benefit from massage can benefit from a hypno-massage. Some people are more suggestible than others, but most people are able to be hypnotized. The ability to use imagination, focus and follow instructions are all helpful in achieving a successful hypno-massage session.

PRACTICE REQUIREMENTS It is important to note that massage practitioners who desire to use hypnosis professionally need to complete a hypnotherapy certification program in a state-approved school. This type of program provides professional preparation in hypnosis regarding improved

performance, enhanced wellness, managed stress and accessed creativity. Certified hypnotherapy training can be achieved by meeting a certain school’s requirements for certification, or by meeting the requirements of a hypnotherapy organization, such as the National Board for Certified Clinical Hypnotherapists or the American Council of Hypnotist Examiners. The curriculum for hypnotherapy training that leads to certification varies depending on the school. The length of certified hypnotherapy programs depend on the school, the curriculum and the specific training program. Some training programs can be completed in a few weeks, while others can take up to a year. Hypnotherapist certification training courses generally cover the therapeutic uses of hypnosis, such as stress relief and habit control, pain control during childbirth, chronic pain, dentistry and emergency situations, and psychological healing through hypnotherapy. 

BEHIND THE SPA DOOR Dana Neal

with Spa Manager of Kneaded Relief Day Spa & Wellness

The keys to cultivating a tremendous team

Concept How would you define the concept of your spa? Kneaded Relief Day Spa & Wellness is a full service wellness spa devoted to creating a strong body, mind and spirit for each of our guests.

What are your most popular treatments? We specialize in several massage therapies, facials, waxing and nail services, body treatments, hydrotherapy treatments and wellness classes.

Facility How many treatment rooms and other amenities do you have? We have four massage rooms, three esthetics rooms, one nail suite that includes three manicure tables and three pedicure thrones, one couple’s suite, a private steam shower, a private dual steam shower, an aromatherapy bath, personal training studio, wellness classes, locker room and relaxation retreat. Our relaxation retreat is where guests go before, in-between or after services.

Leadership Role What daily challenges do you face in your spa manager position? Keeping everyone up to speed at all times is definitely a daily challenge. We are open seven days a week and with a staff of about 35 people, proper communication is certainly a task to maintain. I am constantly working to make sure any important news is relayed to the entire team.

How do you manage stress that works brings into your life? I have a 45-minute commute back and forth and I use this time to unwind. I am not generally one to stress easily, but if I really need to relax, listening to music during my commute is a great tension reliever! Singing and dancing in my car is a great way to shake off the stress too!

What takes the most of your time every day? My time is monopolized primarily by two things: communication with my clients and staff and solving any problems that may occur.

50

LNEonline.com

Team Building How many employees do you have and what are their specialties? We have a total of 35 employees. I am the spa manager and also one of the group fitness instructors. We have two owners (one who is also a personal trainer and one who is also a back up for esthetics). We have 11 guest service members, 11 massage therapists, five estheticians, five nail technicians and two personal trainers, (one who is also the owner and the other is also a massage therapist).

What is your hiring process? The potential employee is first asked to fill out an application. They are then scheduled for a phone interview and, if we choose to pursue them, we will have them come in for a hands-on interview in their field of expertise. Lastly, the possible hire is scheduled for an inperson question and answer interview.

How do you evaluate employees? After being hired, the staff member has one-month, three-month and sixmonth check-ins with myself and/or their department head. This consists of a one-on-one meeting where they discuss performance over the previous time period. Annually we have a wage review with the owners, which is based on how we scored the individual at their monthly performance reviews. Employees that stand out are the ones who embrace changes in the spa and those who are innovative and take initiative.

ments on the new staff. Through the six months we train the employees on the advanced services that we provide so that they do not feel overwhelmed at the beginning of their hire.

our clients really are. We provide our guests the opportunity to give us reviews and feedback via Facebook and Instagram and also display some of our work on social media as well.

How do you keep your employees happy?

Exceptional Client Care

We keep our employees happy by offering complimentary services and gift certificates. We also offer health, dental and vision insurance, an education benefit, room to grow within the company, a simple IRA and annual parties.

How do you keep your clients loyal?

What are your retail goals?

We always discuss with our clients future care and at-home care regimens. Because we encourage them to not only come visit us again but to also be sure to take care of themselves on their own, our guests understand and trust that our recommendations are from the heart and not from the wallet.

We set a monthly retail goal for our staff. Usually it is anywhere between 11 and 14 percent of our service sales.

Do you offer any incentives to your clients to guarantee they come back again?

Retail

What incentives do you have for your staff to reach these goals? Percentage of clients purchasing retail is an individual goal for each team member. This is a very, very small part of what can earn them a raise.

Where is the retail area located? Our retail area is in the front of the facility when you first walk in and covers about one-sixth of the entire space. We make sure it is visible to everyone who enters our spa, which gives us the opportunity to make recommendations before the client leaves.

Marketing

How do you train your staff?

What can you tell us about your marketing techniques?

Our training ends up being about a six-month process. The first two weeks involve an orientation followed by time scheduled with the employee’s department head as well as an owner. We then schedule ‘practice’ appoint-

I write a number of blog articles, which are displayed on our website, to help our guests better understand Kneaded Relief and what we strive to do. A lot of our marketing is also focused on social media because we feel that is where

We offer Relief Points, which are given to clients for pre-booking an appointment, referring a guest and trying out a new service. One thousand points equals one dollar. When a guest is new and pre-books after they pay for their next service they receive 5,000 points on their account. If they are not new but they pre-book an appointment they receive 2,000 points. Clients receive 5,000 points for a referral and 2,000 points for trying a new service.

What advice would you give to someone who would like to manage a spa? Do not take things personally. If you give 100 percent and do everything you can to make someone’s day and they are still not happy, you cannot hold onto it. Come up with a solution and let it go. Just because you work in a relaxing environment does not mean you will have a relaxing job. Remember to have patience, teach your employees properly and practice exceptional customer service. 

Of course, the freedom of a mobile spa business also comes with limitations in terms of service options and elements. For example, mobile estheticians cannot perform services that require a wet room unless a client has a comparable space in their home. If you are unable to afford, transport or carry heavy equipment such as facial steamers, jet baths, microdermabrasion machines or treatment chairs, you will be more limited in terms of what you can offer than a brick and mortar spa.

When you first venture out on your own, attend local events where you will reach your target market. A good place to start is consumer trade shows in your area focused on beauty, massage, health, wellness or fitness. Offer services at discounted rates in the beginning; you will be able to raise your price over time as you establish yourself with a loyal client base and gain word of mouth exposure. For maximum client retention, it is key to be personable so that clients feel comfortable with you, as they will be sharing personal issues such as their esthetic concerns and pain points.

STARTUP COSTS AND PRICING

The key to any successful business is to establish a pricing strategy that earns profits, but is comparable with the current market rate that other mobile estheticians in your area provide. Scope out the competition and gather price comparisons. You must be patient when starting a new business, as you won’t start turning a profit until your earning surpasses the initial startup costs for equipment, product and other expenses you acquire. Give yourself a 15 to 25 percent profit margin on all services rendered, factoring in the cost of transportation, labor and product use.

RETAIL

Providing your clients with home care via retail is an essential aspect of offering complete care to your clients. However due to the mobile nature of your business, you are limited in terms of how much you can offer. So it is important

to select one or two lines that reflect an extension of every aspect of services you perform. Make sure you address the importance of home care and aim to sell retail for every client you work with, as it is essential to a complete treatment regimen as well as a healthy esthetics business. Make sure your inventory includes all elements of a complete skin care routine, as well as aromatherapy, body products, makeup, etc.

HANDLING CANCELLATIONS

One of the biggest problems you’ll face as a business owner is cancellations. You can minimize this issue by asking for a deposit upfront of up to 50 percent. For individual services, a 48-hour notice is ideal. When planning your weeks ahead, let clients know that if they cancel within 48 hours, they will receive 100 percent of their money back. If they cancel within 24 hours they will receive 50 percent of their money back. If they cancel with less than 12 hours notice, they receive none of their money back.

If you work with large groups, have them sign a contract with you a week in advance stating that they will have to pay you for your time and inconvenience if they cancel. This clause sets the precedent for a respectful relationship early on. And don’t neglect to prevent noshows — another revenue loser — with follow-up reminder calls the day before the appointment. This will save you from losing significant money simply due to clients forgetting about the appointment or the correct time in their schedule. 

Why

Wellness In a Spa? It’s time to incorporate wellness into your identity by Camille Hoheb

W

ellness is hot, hot, hot! Estimated to be a $374 billion industry by the Global Wellness Institute, spas are implementing wellness initiatives for guests, fellow employees and their communities. The trend of “Spas on a Mission” was first reported in 2014 through Wellness Tourism Worldwide’s Top 10 Wellness Travel Trends. Now in 2017, successful industry leaders share their insight into the current needs and direction of the wellness industry.

lives and completely focus on their own needs, even for a short time. “Spas are one of the rare places that people are without their devices, allowing guests to stop, take a moment and reflect on their lives. These are magical moments,” says Aksoy.

What should every spa professional know about wellness and why?

What’s driving the growth of the wellness industry? In order to most effectively implement wellness into your own practice, it is important to understand the reasoning behind its huge growth within the spa sector in recent years. Mia Mackman, Principal of MackmanES and Founder/President of Arizona Spa & Wellness Association, points out that interest has been spurred by “rapidly increasing self-awareness and empowered consumers,” adding that “the emphasis on personal care and the desire to live longer and better has created massive momentum… and my spa, hospitality and leisure clients understand that well-being touches every part of their business.” Belgin Aksoy, Founder of Global Wellness Day observes, “With the rise of technology, our very busy agendas, multitasking and perfectionism, the world has become a lonely and unhappy place.”

Why are spas uniquely positioned? Spas are, indisputably, a modern oasis unlike any other. To many people, the spa represents the one place in their life where it is acceptable to disconnect and let go of the pressures of their

Knowledge is power. Knowing why and how to incorporate wellness into one’s practices is essential for the success of any modern spa professional. These experts emphasize several key points to keep in mind. “Every spa professional should know that they can change a person’s life through wellness,” says Aksoy. Mackman shares,“Findings from our Arizona Spa & Wellness Association 2017 survey indicates a clear call for more wellness advanced education and marketing. An operator or provider who seeks multiple licensing and modality training will have more competitive advantages. It is essential to learn new skills to provide a broader range of treatments and services in order to stay relevant and compete. Furthermore, being able to certify and train others will fill the increasing demand for new talent and skilled workers. Spa directors and those in management must be willing to fully understand wellness in order to learn, coach, adapt and change to enhance the success of the spa sector.”

Michelle Frye, Spa Director of Monarch Beach Resort in Dana Point, Calif., takes a cue from Miraval’s signature program, “Life in Balance,” by balancing work and family time as much as possible. “I love participating in the mindfulness classes at Miraval,” she explains. “All associates receive complimentary access to programs and activities to help them achieve better life balance.” In addition, bi-weekly leadership meetings include tips on how to incorporate mindful moments into everyday life.” Aksoy advocates that wellness is a human right through Global Wellness Day. “Knowing your self worth, the value of your physical and mental health, helping someone in need and waking up with a smile is crucial for our future,” she says. “Wellness is the key to make things happen.” 

The Life Changing Power of Sacred Frequencies by Kristina Mazzenga

Vibrational therapy is a healing method that uses sound, energy, vibration, frequency and tone to create a positive change or impact on the well being of an individual. The therapy transmits vibrations directly through the body, causing muscles to contract and relax. Humans have used vibrations as a therapy from the origins of our history through many different forms and in natural, instinctive ways. The Indians from the Amazones used the flute and drums, the Aborigines from Australia the didgeridoo, the Egyptians the harp, the Tibetans the bowls, horns and trumpets, the Japanese the gongs and the Indian Americans the chanting.

LNEonline.com

march2017

67

Oneness: Mind, Body and Spirit Guide

Vibrational therapy is based on the idea that illnesses and diseases are characterized by a blockage in our bodies’ channels. When our body’s frequency is not in balance and blockage occurs, the affected organ stops vibrating, which results in sickness or discomfort. Vibration and sound are potent tools to unleash these blockages and allow mobility and flow of emotions, thoughts and physical sensations. Sending vibrations through the body can break up, dissolve and release blockages where energy is stuck to help cure diseases and other ailments, initiating the body’s overall health and harmony. There are several different modalities of vibrational therapy, but some of the most common styles include the Tibetan bowl, the crystal bowl, drumming and the gong.

68

march2017

LNEonline.com

Tibetan Bowl Therapy Tibetan bowl therapy treats the energy, the mind and the body through the use of metal “singing” bowls, to balance all levels of the human being. Depending on the method of application and how the bowls are used and placed on the body, the effects and indications can vary enormously. The most effective treatments are the ones related to stress, depression, insomnia, emotional disorders, mental heaviness and general muscular stress. The Tibetan Bowl therapy can also be applied in order to prevent disease and to promote genuine individual health. Made from metal, the bowls are struck in specific rhythmic patterns to create vibrational harmonic sounds at different frequencies. Some sound healers associate each bowl with a musical

note, while others follow their intuition — not giving importance to notes and frequencies. Sometimes the bowls will be placed directly on the client’s body, while other times they will be placed around the body without touching the client. The therapist may also move them around the body creating a relaxing meditative atmosphere. César Tejedor, practitioner and spa trainer specializing in the Tibetan Bowl, has written several books and online courses on the Tibetan Bowl. He comments, “I look at the human as the sum of physical body, energy and mind along with the balance of the social and natural environment. If there is no equilibrium, it is impossible to enjoy a healthy and happy life. This is why the treatment I provide works at all levels of the human being.” During this therapy, clients experience a deep

Oneness: Mind, Body and Spirit Guide

relaxation of the body; some may feel as if they are melting into the earth while others may feel like they are floating in the air. Clients reach a deep state of meditation or semi-conscious state, eliminating toxins from the body and stimulating a free flow of energy. This particular treatment is beneficial for those who are sick or ill, but also for those who are healthy. Tibetan bowl therapy guides a person into rebalancing themselves and helps prevent future diseases (30, 60 or 90 minutes/$100-250).

Crystal Bowl Therapy Crystal Bowl Therapy is used as a medium of intense energy to create sound waves for the intention of healing emotional issues. As Tibetan metal bowls generate a series of harmonic overtones and tend to resonate more effectively when placed directly on the body of the listener, crystal bowls generate more of

a pure tone and are essentially more successful when held away from the listener’s body. The bowls are made out of quartz, which is a powerful amplifier of energy. Each crystal bowl is attuned to the diatonic musical scale — C, D, E, F, G, A, B — which is connected with the chakra system – base, sacral, solar plexus, heart, throat, third eye and crown. The bigger the bowl the deeper the sound and the more it resonates with the physical. The smaller the bowl, the higher the sound and the more it resonates with the spiritual. The sound emitted by playing the crystal bowl has been called the “purest tone” in the world. The vibrational frequencies of the bowls resonate with the physical body and the subtle energy field facilitating the harmonizing of the heart with the mind and the physical with the spiritual. The sound induces altered states of consciousness and the body vibrates to a more refined level (30-60 minutes/$40-$90).

Gong Therapy A gong can directly influence a listener’s state of being using a variety of different pitches. The gong amplifies and directs healing energies in the form of electromagnetic waves to carry charged particles through an electromagnetic field from the healer to the listener. The gong cuts through subconscious thought patterns and releases the soul from attachment to negative habits of thinking and feeling. The vibrations affect the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems to directly impact the listener’s state of mind. Ganesha Michael Shapiro, certified Kundalini yoga instructor and full-time energy-healing practitioner specializing in gong therapy, states, “It is necessary for the practitioner to be able to

listen deeply with their intuitive and meditative minds in order to perceive the subtle resonances and tones that are beneficial to listeners.” The gong is said to contain a generative energy that has the power to move consciousness through the channels of time and space. According to the science of Kundalini yoga, the mind has no defense against the vibrations of the gong. Shapiro continues, “It is highly admired and respected by healers, yogis and shamans for its ability to cut through blockages, remove karma and move the mind and the consciousness of a listener towards its destiny or destination.” The gong is frequently used by itself for therapeutic benefits, but may be combined with other instruments such as drums, bells, bowls and flutes. Gongs are frequently used in medi70

tation workshops, healing and wellness clinics, spas and retreat locations. A gong therapy treatment is usually between 60 and 90 minutes, but can be as short as a few minutes and can last as long as a couple of hours depending on the body’s imbalance (60-90 minutes/$30-100).

The drumbeat reminds us of our mother's womb.

Drumming Therapy The drum is the original and most primal sound healing instrument. For centuries, shamans from indigenous tribes all around the world have used the drum to “transport” people into a more relaxed and altered state of mind. The drumbeat reminds us of our mother’s womb and connecting us back to that feeling is a healing experience for many clients.

Jeff Deen, practicing sound healer and shaman, states on the topic, “The low frequency sound waves of a drum penetrate deep into the body, giving the client an inner massage that is felt all the way down to the bones. Clients report that their bodies become the vibration, which melts away stress and emotional traumas effortlessly.”

Oneness: Mind, Body and Spirit Guide

When a person is exposed to a constant and relaxing rhythm, their brain waves automatically slow down to match that rhythm. Deen continues, “A skilled shaman or sound healer can then escort the client into the “theta” brainwave state, which is a trance state allowing the client to access the subconscious mind and their own inner wisdom.” Slower rhythms generally result in more relaxation, whereas faster rhythms can be conducive to moving through a blockage. Different frequencies of different drums resonate with different parts of the body (60-90 minutes/$200). Vibrational therapy can be done on almost any instrument, making it beneficial and cost-effective in spa settings. Many vibrational therapists enroll in a variety of courses and training programs that vary in length from weekend workshops to several years of in-depth methodical training.

To guide your clients in finding a solution to their physical, emotional or mental problems, a proper diagnosis should be given to address each client’s particular imbalances. Sometimes, one session is enough, but some clients may need to receive weekly or monthly treatments in order to enhance their concentration, meditation and mindfulness or to relieve various ailments and boost their positive psychological state. 

SHAMANS IN THE SPA Reconnecting Your Clients to Their Inner Light

by Carrie Borzillo

As energy work, alternative therapies and ancient holistic practices continue to rise in popularity at spas around the world, more savvy spa owners are adding a unique new position to their staff list: a resident shaman.

Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines a shaman as "a priest or priestess who uses magic for the purpose of curing the sick, divining the hidden, and controlling events." But, today's shaman doesn't necessarily have to use magic — he or she can be anyone with a true calling to heal, who is trained in energy work and/or is experienced in anything from clairvoyance to sound therapy to the Native American medicine wheel. "Shamans assist you in reconnecting you to your power, your light, and the remembrance of your magnificence,” says Alyson Charles, a.k.a., Rockstar Shaman, who is a clairvoyant and works with Pachamama Earth Energies. “We can heal past pain or trauma, get you through current challenges, and help you activate your gifts, talents and leadership abilities so 74

you can put them out there in a much bigger way in the planet." Dani Burling, resident shaman and program ambassador at Two Bunch Palms in Desert Hot Springs, Calif., says her Journey with a Shaman (60 minutes, $195) service "can take you into any dimension to find the answers you are looking for to improve your relationships, your finances and your health."

Rising In Popularity Shamanic healing services are a natural extension for spas that offer other energy work, such as chakra balancing, reiki, crystal healings and psychic readings. "People are beginning to feel the need for energetic shifts in order to affect their physical selves,”

says Tracey Welsh, General Manager at Sagestone Spa & Salon at the Red Mountain Resort in Ivins, Utah. “People are also searching to connect within themselves. Western cultures are more widely accepting so-called 'alternative' healing modalities to work adjunct with their other medical care." Rianna Riego, former Executive Director of Wellness, Brand, and Communication at Two Bunch Palms of Desert Hot Springs, Calif., says, "Shamans have always been revered as healers whose ancient rituals are designed to divine the good from the evil. There is a growing spiritual awareness and longing for these types of practices that originated with indigenous cultures and have been proven effective over time."

Shamanic healing services are a natural extension for spas that offer other energy work.

The Shamanic Client Most spas report that the demographic of the client seeking a shaman, really, has a broad range. It is "anyone in need of a change and open to assistance and people of all ages," says Riego. However, at Miraval Resort & Spa in Tucson, Ariz., most of the clients who book these services are women between the ages of 30 and 60. Likewise, Charles says that while she does have millennial clients, "it tends to be really strong connected ambitious women from about 28 to 40." The two most common reasons someone seeks her services, says Charles, are for "clarity and courage." Clients come in to treat everything from physical and/or emotional pain to past trauma and relationship issues to those just in need of a cosmic shift in their thinking. "Everyone comes in with a different life experience and each want to achieve something different by the end of the treatment. The clients seeking our shamanic treatments are looking for a deeper healing than they can get from your average massage — whether it be mental, spiritual or emotional," says Cecilia Hercik, Director of Spa at Miraval Resort & Spa.

Burling says that oftentimes the client isn't exactly sure why they've connected with her. "The experience is never what they expected because the mind is so limited and the journey of the soul is so infinite that their journey is one they never expected. Many schedule a shaman session because it was their birthday and they want their new year to be filled with more love, abundance, and health," she says.

Hiring a Shaman One must do their due diligence and verify not just where people studied to be shamans, but what their personal story is that led them to shamanism to ensure they are hiring an authentic healer. "It's important to have an actual session vetted by someone who is familiar with a shaman's work,” says Riego. “It's just as important to assess if the person would be a good fit for

the property. A red flag would be any negative energy and the inability to work within a structured environment. It's recommended to bring someone in on a contract basis and build from there." For Welsh, it was important for her to find a shaman with a training certification combined with experience. Red Mountain's service providers are paid an hourly fee as part time employees. "There are many payment structures to consider as the best fit for a business. Commission split, space rental for provider, hourly fee, or contracted fee," she adds. Miraval's resident shaman, a fulltime employee in their spa, was trained in shamanic healing rituals by having spent years training with shamans from South America. "The most important thing spas should look for when selecting a shaman is their training,” says Hercik. “Shamanic rituals have been kept alive for thousands of years

because older generations pass their knowledge to younger generations, a tradition that cannot be duplicated on a computer or in a classroom. Because it's so popular, I'd recommend spas hire shamans full-time to cater to the increase in demand for these treatments." That said, not all shamans have formal training, nor do they necessarily need it to provide their services. With any type of energy or spiritual work, it's just as important that the work is the provider's true calling. "The path of the shaman is the path of the healer's journey; for one cannot guide another into any dimension unless they first have journeyed there themselves. The shaman cannot truly know the pain of another unless they first have experienced that pain themselves," says Burling, whose education includes studying the medicine wheel training and masters classes. She’s also a reiki master, advanced theta healer and clinically certified hypnotherapist.

Creating a Shamanic Service Shamanic healing services can range from hour-long one-on-one talk sessions using shamanic tools to hourslong experiences to add-ons for like-minded treatments, such as acupuncture, yoga, meditation, chakrabalancing, reiki and cranial-sacral work — to name just a few. At Red Mountain, each of the spa's Shaman Spirit Healing sessions (90 minutes, $150) with resident shaman Brittney Marie is customized to the guest's needs, starting with a consultation about the client's concerns and goals. "Various shamanic tools will be used such as card decks, stones to connect healing into the earth, chakra balancing takes place both with hands-off energy work and the playing of crystal bowls, herbs are burned to cleanse

the aura, intuitive guided visualizations are used to assist in shifting energies and perspectives. A brief discussion is held at the end to wrap everything that happened together and the guest leaves with a stone or card from the session to carry the work on at home," explains Welsh. Marie, who is trained in the healing arts of shamanic energy medicine and journeyed to the sacred sites and mountains of Peru and received the rites and initiations of the Q'ero lineage, also offers Chakra Balancing and clearing, Chinese Stone and crystal medi-

cine, sacred geometry, sound healing with crystal singing bowls, medicine wheel and drum circles. Miraval's Shamanic Experiences can be done in tandem with a massage or other body treatment, or they can be done alone as a ritual. "Our Intuitive Massage (50 minutes, $175, 80 minutes, $280, 100 minutes, $320) is led by a shaman, says Hercik. “During the treatment, the shaman reads the guest's energy to figure out what areas of the body to focus on in the treatment. It creates a deeper and more personalized experience that is more beneficial

to the body than a typical massage." Two Bunch Palms offers 200 classes a month and private sessions of all types. A few of the guests' favorite services are Discover Your Power Animal, Ceremony for Mother Earth (a Peruvian blessing bundle creation with the guests) and Energy of the Drums (where guests get to experience the rhythms of their own drum), which are part of the monthly classes offered to guests of the hotel, as well as Journey with a Shaman from the spa menu. Burling begins the private sessions by asking the guest what brought them to her. "They choose a stone from my medicine bundle and they lay down on my table," he explains. "We begin by clearing their thoughts and emotions that lead to a door opening into another dimension. I guide the guest into this dimension to see where the pain of their emotions really originated

and then begin a journey with the person of discovery, insight and answers to questions that they have had for a very long time." "My gift is to take the guest into that dimension to see the magic of becoming Mother Earth or flying like an eagle," she continues. "At the end of their session, the meaning of the stone they picked will be exactly where they journeyed during the session."

The Results Welsh says that Red Mountain clients have reported a variety of results, including physical ailments relieved, emotional shifts, positive health changes and shifts in mental attitude for the better. "Many people can find these sessions life changing for them and many will come back for additional sessions," says Welsh.

These sessions are special because they are not cookie cutter and impact people in so many different and personal ways. Spreading the Word Hercik echoes that: "Some report having a clearer vision and outlook on life, some report feeling better physically, and some just feel more relaxed and at peace. These sessions are special because they are not cookie cutter and impact people in so many different and personal ways."

One effective way to let your clients know about your new shamanic offerings is to not bury it on your treatment menu and website. Miraval created a separate category titled, "Healing Energy," that highlights all of the spa's shamanic and spiritual offerings, which includes Pachamama Medicine,

Intuitive Massage, Mother’s Blessings, Samadi Healing and Spirit Flight. "We also have another powerful category in the resort’s activities menu called "Healthy Living" where we offer unique healing workshops like Chrysalis of Sound & Himalayan Sound Bath (with Shamanic and Intuitive Healers) Catch Your Dreams, Drumming & Talking Circle with our Navajo Healer," adds Hercik. That said, the best marketing is actually the oldest form of marketing. "Word-of mouth from individuals who have had these experiences is the most meaningful," says Welsh.  Carrie Borzillo is an awardwinning lifestyle and entertainment journalist covering spas, health and wellness, sex and relationships. The rise of moving meditation and self expression in the spa by Liza Pitsirilos

Based on the belief that the body, mind and spirit are interconnected, “conscious dance” is a psychotherapeutic use of movement to promote the integration of a person’s emotional, mental, physical and spiritual well-being. It’s about honoring the body’s intelligence and paying attention to the body-mind-spirit connection. The human connection to body movement is ancient and may have even been one of the first ways humans expressed themselves to one another.

Oneness: Mind, Body and Spirit Guide

In conscious dance, a dynamic conscious movement-based process is set to world music. Most often, a guide or journey leader leads participants along the path of expressive movement and guided imagery. In addition, some ritual voice and affirmations can set the tone for a transformative experience. Conscious dance combines structured movement and freestyle elements that help participants to clear their minds, get into their bodies and release anything that no longer serves them. The practice is evolving very rapidly, and there are now more than 100 modalities of conscious dance. Its benefits of holistic healing and expression are backed by validated research, making it an essential fit for the spa wellness world, which is now increasingly focused on the complete concept of body, mind and spirit. Conscious dance acts as a catalyst for each participant to celebrate the magnificence of their body and their life. It significantly improves quality of life by promoting the following benefits: Physical health and vitality. Dance is multi-directional, engaging a variety of muscles while working the cardiovascular system to strengthen the heart, burn body fat and increase oxygen for better circulation. It also can be very therapeutic in easing physical tension. Mental clarity. Dancing improves brain function on a variety of levels. Recent studies show how the endorphins and adrenaline that are released while dancing have a unique effect on the brain by blending cerebral and cognitive thought processes with muscle memory and “proprioception,” which creates a deep sense of satisfaction and oftentimes a “dancer’s high,” which clears the mind. Emotional expression. The key to emotional health is in its expression — a healthy discharge of emotion can

create the space needed to shift away from an old story into a new possibility. What makes conscious dance uniquely different is that it encourages the expression of these emotions so that participants can learn to navigate all of their emotional states in a sacred container where expression is validated without judgment, thus supporting their emotional well-being. Spiritual connection and creativity. Creativity is the expression of the soul and imagination is a gateway to accessing anything one wants in life. Conscious dance is an inner exploration that inspires creativity by using the body, spirit and imagination, giv-

dance to somatic movement therapy. The structure of a conscious dance class varies depending on the form and facilitator. A class can last anywhere from 45 minutes to a few hours. Participants do not need to bring anything with them and are asked to wear comfortable clothing for movement. Conscious dance classes are typically offered in a group class format, but select forms are offered in individual sessions. The price to participate may range from $20 to $45 for group classes and $80 to $150 for private sessions. With an estimated 1,000 Dance First Association studio locations, many participants are finding that the power of conscious dance suits their search to move with intention and purpose for the overall integration of their body, mind and spirit. The rise of conscious dance marks a significant shift from dancing in a fitness class, nightclub or performance. It offers spas a unique opportunity to serve clients in integrating their body, mind and spirit in a holistic way. While there are a variety of forms for conscious dance, several formats share one or more of these four key components: ing practitioners or dancers the freedom to dance from within and also with others in improvisational ways, which awakens natural creativity and inner power. The use of imagination allows them to drop into deeper realms of consciousness and access higher realms of knowing that are necessary for facing, clearing and transforming whatever may be holding them back from spiritual growth.

OFFERING CONSCIOUS DANCE Dance associations such as Dance First identify more than 100 forms of conscious dance, ranging from ecstatic

Opening Embodiment If a facilitator is leading the dance, they may open up with a welcoming and intention setting followed by a warm up stage that helps participants get connected to their body through breath and light movement. In this warm-up stage, the facilitator welcomes participants and invites them into their body through breath and light movements to connect with their body. An intention can be set allowing participants to focus their attention inward while connecting to their heart, creating a supportive relationship between the facilitator, fellow participants and themselves.

Participants are guided into connecting with themselves and fellow participants, all while being attentive to their mental and emotional state. Expansion/Immersion/ Connection As participants begin to slow down, let go and physically warm up, the facilitator may use rituals drawing on expressive movement, guided imagery and voice and affirmation to awaken participants’ senses and support more fluid movement. Participants are guided into connecting with themselves and fellow participants, all while being attentive to their mental and emotional state.

Illumination/Shamanic Fire/Empowerment As participants become aware of their thoughts and feelings they are invited to express them through movement, and to burn away any negative self talk. The facilitator can use other rituals to help participants access tools within themselves to release old blocks in their hearts or self limiting beliefs so that they can come into alignment with their essence, intuition and deeper love. This is the ultimate creative space for generating insight and inner work. The brain has an “a-ha moment and the participant is fertile for new ideas and behaviors to be created.

Celebration/Sensuality/ Manifestation After a peak experience, which is a dopaminergic or endorphin rich process similar to a runner’s high, the facilitator may guide participants to move into a phase to solidify the information that is being processed. The empowerment phase is reiterating new ideas and adaptive behavior, which allows conscious neuronal firing for an entire ultradian cycle. In this space participants begin to relax into their sensual selves, allowing them to bring their energy down and inward, which helps them to create and manifest their dreams.

Heart Integration In this final phase, participants are guided to listen and connect with their heart, staying with and listening to their own deep emotional processing. Participating in this phase opens up their ability to receive, have divine realization and a deep connection to their

spirit. As the dance comes to a close, participants are guided to return to the earth for deep rest and relaxation. Facilitators may close the circle by inviting participants to reflect on anything that they experienced or witnessed.

REQUIREMENTS AND MARKETING In order to host conscious dance classes, a spa needs a room with space for movement, a sound system for music and possibly a handless microphone for the facilitator. Additional touches such as candles, diffusing essential oils or soft lighting to create the ambiance can further enhance the setting. Conscious dance instructors can be found on the Dance First Association’s website (dancefirst.com) and Conscious Dancer Magazine. Spas should pursue facilitators who have references, insurance and current certification by an accredited organization or a university degree specializing in movement therapy. Compensation for facilitators varies

from $50 to several thousand dollars per event, depending on the payment structure (flat rate vs. percentage split) and the facilitator. Conscious dance classes can be marketed and promoted through dance associations and directories, health and wellness publications, or traditional advertisement and print literature. ď Ž

A traveling visual experience through the third eye by Aurora Solis

Light Therapy You may have heard of this evolutionary light technology that guides people into reaching a deep sense of meditation; you may also be completely stumped when it comes to phrases like “hypnagogic light experience” and “traveling light therapy.” Here is the complete breakdown on this technology, the benefits it provides and what one experiences in a complete session.

LNEonline.com

march2017

87

Oneness: Mind, Body and Spirit Guide

What is it? Traveling light therapy incorporates a neurostimulator that combines a flickering light with a constant light. The therapy is meant to guide the client into an altered state of consciousness by stimulating the pineal gland. The body is completely relaxed during this experience and the eyes are closed underneath the light for the entirety of the session.

The Pineal Gland The pineal gland is located directly in the center of the human brain; mysteriously connected with our “third eye,” which has been written about in several ancient traditions — Gnostic, Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism and more. Experienced yoga enthusiasts are able to use this extraordinary part of the brain to suspend their linear perception of space and time.

88

march2017

LNEonline.com

The connection between the pineal gland and the mystical third eye is more than just symbolic. It is believed that the pineal cells share a common ancestry with the retinal cells of the eye. In certain reptiles and living fossils, a parietal “third” eye is usually present in the middle of the head. This eye can be photosensitive and can also be used to regulate biorhythms, similar to how the pineal gland acts in humans. In addition, the third eye has all the characteristics of the two optical eyes we use for everyday vision. The pineal gland has the remnants of the cornea and retina, and possesses the same light sensitive cells as the eyes. The pineal gland generates an endogenous psychotropic chemical called DMT (Dimethyl Tryptamine). Tryptophan is the amino acid, which is the foundation to DMT, but the body has an inhibitor enzyme that normally prevents DMT from being made from tryptophan. DMT is only naturally gen-

erated twice in a lifetime: at birth and death. It is responsible for allowing these potentially traumatic, emotional life transition processes to happen gracefully. There are many occurrences in our everyday lives that negatively affect the pineal gland. By the time of adulthood, fluoride, mercury, refined food, pesticides, sugar, alcohol, tobacco and coffee all affect functionality and partake in the calcification process.

Flicker Effect Since ancient times, the Flicker Effect has been used to generate altered states of consciousness as a result of viewing certain frequencies of a bright light source through a rotating propeller. In 200 A.D., Ptolemy studied the phenomenon of the flickering generated by sunlight through the spokes of a spinning wheel resulted in patterns and colors appearing in the eyes of the

Oneness: Mind, Body and Spirit Guide

observer, creating a feeling of euphoria. In the early 19th century, Czech anatomist Jan Purkyně was the first to document a hypnogogic effect, during which various patterns appear at different rates of flicker as each of the five brainwave patterns (Alpha - alert, Beta - relaxed, Delta – meditative, Theta – sleep and Gamma – insight) are stimulated. This Hypnogenic effect is the transition between being awake and asleep, and is a form of trance or hypnosis. In this trance state, the mental defenses are lowered, making room for a greater awareness.

The Experience During a Traveling Light session, the eyes should remain closed throughout the therapy for a more full, undisturbed experience. Your client would sit or lie down with their eyes closed, breathing normally and relaxing completely. White light begins to pass through the eyelids, entering the retina. This specific stimulation of the optic nerve activates the pineal gland; contributing to an amazing visual experience that includes vivid colors and sacred geometry. Listening to music during this session can enhance the experience for the client because the mind combines the two stimuli, generating synesthesia — the experience of “seeing” music. Each session is completely unique, even if your client’s frequency of visits, intensity of settings and music remains unchanged.

Other benefits include: • Reduced anxiety and stress • Reduced fear and depression • A sense of wholeness • Increased sense of inner peace and emotional stability • Increased creativity • Increased intuition • Improved physical healing • Better quality, less interrupted sleep • Release of beneficial hormones related to health and longevity

Frequency and cost of treatment A sequence of at least five sessions of one hour each is suggested for optimal benefits of this therapy, although shorter time periods are available. The average time and price for a 30-minute session is about $50, a 45-minute session is approximately $75 and a 60-minute session typically costs about $90. 

If your clients are currently

any concerns, advise them provider prior to a traveling light therapy session. Always inform your clients that this type of light therapy is neither medicine nor psychotherapy, and have them sign a waiver before each session.

Reported Benefits Traveling light therapy offers benefits of a very deep meditation through an almost immediate expanded state of consciousness. The light stimulates temporary harmonic wave patterns in the brain, which are typically only found in those who consistently meditate. The light encourages the Theta state as well as high Alpha patterns, which are most often associated with joy, intuition, creativity and high concentration. LNEonline.com

berry Schizandra

Superherb for Super Skin

96

W

e are all acquainted with the “super berries” on the market today and their association with radiant skin health. Blueberries, acai berry and even goji berry all contain high levels of skin affirming antioxidants, phytonutrients and vitamin compounds. Now there’s a new berry on the block you may not have heard of — schizandra. Schizandra Berry (Schisandra Chinensis), also known as Wu Wei Zi, Youth Berry, or Magnolia Vine, grows from a deciduous woody viney plant native to China, Manchuria and part of Russia. This scarlet red medicinal berry has been used in traditional Chinese herbalism for more than 2,000 years, donning a variety of fantastic benefits. Modern research on this magic berry has shown it to be a safe and time tested “superherb” used to keep organ systems toned and skin more resilient to signs of aging. Sometimes referred to as the “five flavor berry”, it has a unique taste profile that is sour/astringent, sweet, bitter, salty and pungent all at once. Chinese herbalism sees schizandra as a balancer of all the energy meridians in the body, tonifying the three treasures of life force, and nourishing the five elemental energies of wood, fire, earth, metal and water.

ADAPTOGENIC SUPERPOWERS This berry is even more interesting because it belongs to a class of herbs known as “adaptogenic herbs” or “superherbs.” Adaptogenic substances possess the following essential qualifying criteria: - Non toxic regardless of dosage - Safe for daily use - A naturally occurring substance - Have an anti-stress response - Have a balancing effect on the body’s organ systems, promoting homeostasis - They have a dual directional response on the body, meaning that they do not have only one specific function. Dual directional function enables it to change what it does based on what it brings to the body for it’s state of greatest optimum functioning and homeostasis.

SCHIZANDRA BERRY MEETS ALL OF THE ABOVE CRITERIA! Consider a few of the key benefits associated with this potent superherb class berry:

We a re expo sed to to xins a nd pollutants on a daily basis, which we must process. We ingest unnatural chemicals in food and water, and end up storing heavy metals or metabolizing synthetic drugs and alcohol. The amount of exposure we undergo and the efficiency in which these toxins are processed has a significant impact on the health and quality of our skin. Our liver is one of the primary organs used by the body to detoxify foreign pollutants that make their way in. Taken daily, schizandra can protect the liver from harmful toxin buildup. Schizandra is safe for daily use, even for people with sensitive digestive systems and a low tolerance to supplements.

Packed with loads of antioxidants including key vitamins C and E, schizandra is a great superherb for skin wellness and protection. Schizandra’s strong astringent qualities enable the skin to hold in moisture for more fullness and beauty. It has always been popular amongst wealthy individuals in China, due to its ability to preserve youth in both physiology and appearance. The superherb has shown efficacy through countless dynasties, wherein the skin is said to glow, becoming clearer and finer after one imbibes it consistently for several months. Schizandra may also protect against UVB induced skin damage, and is still used as an important botanical in many Eastern skin formulas.

Cleanses the Blood Schizandra has a unique capacity to not only cleanse the liver of toxins, but also to cleanse the blood once the waste from the liver has been removed. Some liver detox formulas put the user into a state of toxic overload as the body is cleansing itself (known as a Herxheimer Reaction), which comes with symptoms ranging from headache, diarrhea and flu-like symptoms. The bloodstream receives a tune up with this superherb, allowing for nutrients to flow more readily to organs and skin throughout the body.

Lowers Stress Like many herbs in the adaptogenic category, schizandra may support adrenal function by maintaining normalized levels of hormones in the body. Experiments done with adaptogenic herbs have shown notable reduction of cortisol levels due to the stress protective qualities of these herbs. With the strong correlation between one’s stress hormone levels and their capacity to deal with aging more efficiently, lowering stress is helpful for maintaining skin health. Furthermore, research has shown that schizandra helps slow the process of oxidative stress, which contributes to nearly every disease there is and results in the maintenance of healthy cells, tissues and organs.

HOW TO USE

Lowers Inflammation High concentrations of antioxidant compounds allow schizandra to fight off free radical damage and lower inflammation response. Schizandra also has the capacity to improve and repair tissue via its ability to release leukocytes, which are anti-inflammatory.

BRAIN BONUS! Schizandra is also noted to improve mental clarity and focus in addition to increasing levels of bio-available energy, promoting feelings of calm and fighting off fatigue.

Quality sources for high grade schizandra include dragon herbs, surthrival, Lost Empire Herbs and jing herbs

So, what is the best method to incorporate this little berry powerhouse into a diet tailored to achieve healthier skin and overall system health? Administration can take various forms. One can ingest it as a tincture, mix the powdered or fruit extract form in water, take it as an encapsulated supplement or drink it in a tea or tonic. As a true adaptogenic superherb, only one to three grams of the dried berry are necessary per day! The recipe below is perfect for those who are sensitive to pungent tastes. It can be enjoyed at room temperature or warm:  8-12 oz. water  ¼ -1/2 teaspoon schizandra berry powder  Sweetener of your choice (optional) Combine the ingredients above and then add in supportive herbs of your choice (ginger, lemon, goji powder, noni, turmeric, etc.). Stir and serve to your clients. Urge your clients to take the challenge of taking schizandra for 100 days to upgrade their physiology!  Note: As with most herbs, one should not imbibe schizandra during pregnancy or when nursing.

sacred space CREATING A MEDITATION SANCTUARY IN YOUR SPA by Robert Sachs Tibetans have a word for a space that has been properly prepared for the optimal benefits in meditation:

“Shin-jong.” It means that the space has been tamed both by how it was created in the first place, and due to the fact that people have worked on calming their mind in that space with some level of success. The space joyfully radiates serenity. Meditation cannot be effective if it is approached as an ore task to check off of a never-ending list of things to get done in a time-crunched day. One must recognize its value in living a sane, balanced, peaceful and inspiring life. In such a state of being, stress becomes more manageable, and as a result so does one’s physiological and psychological responses to it. In fact, a good measure of the success of a meditation is just that.

STARTING POINT Although it is possible to meditate or bring a meditative state of mind into any situation, it is helpful to begin a meditation practice in a peaceful, harmonious environment. Whether next to a lake or in the mountains, various natural surroundings are an ideal option. However, for residents of cities and suburbs, access to such is sadly infrequent. And even fewer live in proximity to a monastery where prayer and meditation is the primary activity that saturates the environment. In this reality, more spas are recognizing the value of creating such sanctuaries for their customers who are seeking the solace and strength that they have heard reported by friends or media on the benefits of meditation. To intentionally create a meditation space or room in a spa requires attention to detail. Ideally and at the most basic, it should be a room in the spa that does not back up against bathrooms, laundry or break rooms, has minimal foot traffic and/or is an area where you encourage staff and guests to be quiet. It cannot be near ringing telephones or the hustle and bustle of your front desk or retail areas. In this regard, it is a cell-phone free space. If your guest is too worried about getting an important call to leave their cell phone behind, then they are probably not in a state of mind that is conducive to meditation anyway.

CATER TO THE CLIENT Such a space can be simple or elaborate in its design and décor. In this respect, you have to know your clientele, and understand what will inspire them to want to use the space. Do they want an environment that is more natural, monastic, Eastern? For example, some people may find a single lit candle more inspiring than an image of a Buddha. 102

IT’S ALL IN THE DETAILS… When you create a space for meditation, every subtle aspect matters. Consider how every element comes together when you design your meditation space. Lighting. For the room itself, the best choice for lighting is dim-able lighting that is NOT fluorescent. The buzz of fluorescent lighting can be very distracting. It used to be that daylight incandescent bulbs were the way to go, however with the newer eco-bulbs, one of the issues is that they sometimes flicker too much on dimmer switches. If necessary, consult with a lighting specialist. Colors. With respect to wall colors, avoid black, bright white or washed out pastel colors. Think of tones that are more natural. Although natural wooden flooring can be elegant, it allows for more sound, some of which can be muted by meditation and/or yoga pads and meditation cushions. Carpeting. If you choose to add carpeting, select a woolen or other natural fiber blend over synthetic carpeting, which can

generate static. Also, keep in mind that some people may be sensitive to glues that are used with carpeting, so use a non-toxic glue or allow the space to air out before you invite people in. Seating. People should be able to sit comfortably while meditating. Some may enjoy cushions on the ground, but it is prudent to also have a number of chairs within easy reach for those whose knees or backs do not allow them to meditate on the ground. Aroma. Then there is smell. Meditation is often associated with incense. Traditional incenses were formulated to support the mind to become calm and clear. Tibet and Japan are known for such inspiring smells. However many modern buildings have codes and alarm systems sensitive to smoke. Thus, the solution is essential oil diffusers, used with some of the more traditional incenses — frankincense, myrrh, sandalwood and cedar. Florals such as jasmine and rose, along with others that support calm, peace and clarity may also be considered. Focal point. Create a central focus area for your meditation room. This could be

o&w sacred spa

an altar with flowers, candles and inspiring images, whether they are pictures or statues. Start simple and embellish over time. Such a centralizing space may even have a T.V. monitor, as there is an ever growing number of digital formats for visual meditations. Beginning and ending meditations with Tibetan bells or gongs can be quite inspiring. Additionally, having a dedicated sound system for inspiring music or recorded guided meditations creates more opportunities for creating a meditative experience. Dedication. To properly “shin-jong” your meditation space, the space should be specifically dedicated to this activity. An even richer atmosphere can be created if you hold activities that support a meditative state of mind in the space. Consider Yoga or Tai Chi, or hold lectures or presentations on topics related to meditation. Conversely, it should NOT be a breakout space for parties.

Staff support. Lastly, a critical feature of creating such an environment is having a staff that either uses the space on their breaks, teaches meditation, or has their own meditation practice at home. In other words, you need living examples of a staff that respects the value of meditation. In this way, your meditation space is like the core of a transformational center and invites curiosity. Make it inviting. Although classes are always useful and scheduling such a good way to introduce and help sustain your clientele’s meditation experience, allowing customers and staff to take even a few moments to slip in, settle down and recharge at any time creates an openness that supports people getting a taste of meditation and learning to savor how it can enrich their lives.

THE BOTTOM LINE Finally, unless your income can carry such a space and its classes free of charge, your spa needs to generate income for offering meditation. Although the experience and practice is priceless, there are expenses associated, such as utilities used in the space, materials used specifically for the meditation and staff or teachers that need to be compensated. Thus, while I encourage you to allow staff and clients to drop in and be inspired when the spirit calls (as a perk for being a guest or staff member at your spa) — it is reasonable to charge for specific events. The ancient tradition of the spa allowed people to calm down through the benefits of a peaceful environment supported by those who knew how to use the natural elements therapeutically. Meditation was always a feature of such places. Today, in the chaos, distraction and emotional turmoil that many people are experiencing, reviving a strong meditation practice in the spa environment is indispensable. This makes for happier clients who are likely to return to enhance and support their lives made richer from their meditation experience, and creates ripples of peace and serenity for family, friends and communities. In this way, spas can be sources of inspiration

MAKING A MAKEUP STATEMENT The foundation of a successful retail area with Perry Nixdorf Owner of Paradise Salon, Spa & Wellness, Carson City, Nevada

SERVICE & RETAIL What is the best part about working in the esthetics industry?

Perry Nixdorf, Owner of Paradise Salon, Spa & Wellness

106

march2017

LNEonline.com

We have a name that we use to describe the way we make people feel at Paradise Salon, Spa & Wellness: The Paradise Effect. People come in and leave feeling amazing. I thrive off of the smiles we put on people’s faces because of our products and services. Why did you decide to implement makeup services into your spa menu? I had makeup services in my previous

salon. I brought those makeup services over to Paradise when I established it three years ago. It is important to have makeup services in your salon because it is a convenience factor for clients; it is a retail extension. We can introduce them to types of makeup they might not be familiar with at the same time they are coming to us for different services. What is the most difficult part about offering makeup services in your facility? Trying to balance makeup services with the demand of our regular services. Depending on the time of year, there

are months when we sell much more makeup retail than others. Around the holidays, especially Halloween, we have special promotions that help us generate more makeup revenue than other times of the year. For example, around Halloween we have a Zombie Crawl where we specialize in providing zombie makeup lessons. Once you sell a client on your makeup and services, most of the time they are more inclined to come back again. Which of your makeup services is the most popular? Our makeup touch-ups. A lot of the time guests come in for our other services and end up getting a quick makeup touch-up as well, which leads to sales because of the quality of the products we provide. The quality of makeup products you use is very important. Clients need to have that “aha” moment and from there the product sells itself. What kind of special treatments do you offer? We offer makeup analysis and instruction, makeup application, microblading and permanent makeup. For special events and even day to day, we do makeup for every occasion that the client would want to have their makeup done for. For example on Halloween, we offer zombie makeup and tutorials. We also do bridal and bridal party makeup.

MAKEUP AREA What is the size of your makeup area compared to the rest of your spa? Our makeup area is about 80 to 100 sq. feet of our 7,266 sq. foot facility. What prompted you to choose the size/design for each specific area? The building I bought for Paradise was

previously a physical therapist’s office. They had already created the basic structure of the building. I took the room that they had as their office, which is located right by the reception desk as you walk in the front entrance, and converted that to my makeup room. It is also located right next to where we have our retail area. Our clients come to the retail area and can see the makeup services we provide and the space we have dedicated to it.

TEAM MEMBERS How many makeup artists do you have? We have two makeup artists on staff. One of them helps with all of the makeup services and also works at the front desk. Our other makeup artist specializes in body painting and themed makeup. Both of them do a great deal of makeup retail sales. Where do you find new hires? Facebook and Instagram. A lot of the time, makeup artists are posting their best work on their accounts and from there it is just a matter of searching for the particular type of makeup artist you are looking for. What specific qualities do you look for in a member of your staff? They have to be genuinely nice people who are technology savvy. All of our appointments are kept in a computer software program that we use and our staff members need to be able to navigate that. How do you keep members of your staff incentivized? We give our employees a raffle ticket for each product they sell. At the end of the week we have a little mini raffle where employees can win something small such as an eye shadow or a lipstick. Once a month we do a raffle for

a larger prize or appliance such as a flat iron, curling iron or blow dryer. The more products they sell, the more opportunities they have to win these prizes. We also have partnerships with our distributors and they provide us with really nice gift packages that we also raffle off to our employees.

MARKETING How do you promote your makeup services? We use a software that tracks how many times people have visited the spa and how long it has been since their last visit. This system automatically generates emails that not only thank the clients who have recently visited our spa, but also automatically sends emails to clients who haven’t come in lately as a reminder. We also send out a monthly newsletter covering all of our upcoming promotions and specials for the month. As for the day to day promotion of sales and promotions, we use Facebook. Our makeup artists are very big on Instagram. They post fantastic pictures of their work and always tag Paradise, which is another successful way we promote our services and grab hold of new clients.

INSIDER TIPS What advice would you pass along to other spa owners who are thinking about adding makeup to their spa menu? Commit yourself thoroughly to the process. Treat retail as its own business. Have enough products to fill your retail space and make a statement. Just putting the makeup on the shelf isn’t enough. Make sure you have a properly trained staff and a high level of knowledge of the products you are intending to sell. 

perfection Becoming an Undertone PRO for All Skin Colors by Jaclyn Peresetsky

a

makeup application is a work of true art. It is an enhancement of a client’s beauty, and our ability to help them look and feel their best depends simply on our cosmetics and how we layer them. When you choose the wrong color of foundation, blush or concealer, you inherently know there is a total disconnect in colors harmonizing together. The perfect makeup look was in your head when you started, but one wrong misstep in color throws everything off. The key to starting off on the right color path is the undertone. Selecting the correct undertone for a client’s foundation is where the “foundation” of your makeup application really begins. It’s one of the key elements to perfecting the complexion, enhancing key features on the face and achieving a more natural look. Harmonizing the foundation shade with the skin sets the tone for the rest of the makeup colors applied thereafter. Ignoring the importance of the undertone makes makeup look fake and mask like, detracting from the beauty of your client’s face. Choosing the right foundation shade requires the following:

THE CORRECT UNDERTONE OF THE SKIN MUST BE IDENTIFIED CORRECTLY.

THE RIGHT UNDERTONE OF THE FOUNDATION MUST HARMONIZE WITH THE SKIN.

THE VALUE OF THE FOUNDATION MUST MATCH THE VALUE OF THE SKIN.

defining

“undertone” What exactly makes up the skin’s undertone? Undertones can be complicated because each person has their own unique undertone coded into their DNA, but it can be slightly altered by factors such as one’s phase of life, hormonal fluctuations, illnesses, diet, stress, sun exposure or the natural aging process. Essentially, the undertone is made up of three basic components. »»

HEMOGLOBIN (A SHADE OF RED), KNOWN AS OUR BLOOD.

CAROTENE (A SHADE OF YELLOW),KNOWN AS YELLOW PIGMENTS OR CAROTENOIDS.

Undertone is not entirely uniform across one’s skin, so it is essential to test foundation in multiple areas of the face such as the jawline and forehead.

identifying undertone Correctly identifying the primary undertone is the key to selecting the right color family for your makeup application, and it makes the application look less contrived and very natural. Identifying a color category for the foundation that matches the skin makes choosing the right shade quicker and easier. The simplified categories of foundation colors include yellow (golden undertones), peach (red and yellow mixed undertones), pink (fair with pink undertones), olive (light green undertones) and beige (tan or brown undertones). The goal is to determine which color category harmonizes with the unique blend of colors (melanin, carotene and hemoglobin) in your client’s skin, so the

image foundation perfection

foundation shade blends uniformly on the skin. Start by categorizing your foundation into the color categories, then start swiping it on different areas of the skin. Allow 30 seconds to dry and analyze how the foundation sits on the skin. The ideal outcome is for the foundation to perfect the complexion but barely be visible. Blend along the jawline to eliminate telling lines. There are primary undertones and secondary undertones, and the secondary undertone can throw you off if it is considerably present. For example, a client may have a lot of yellow in their skin, but maybe they also have a secondary olive undertone, and so both colors need to be present in the foundation so it blends flawlessly with their skin. Identifying a secondary undertone can be more challenging than a primary undertone. Clients with a strong secondary undertone are always more difficult to match in pre-made foundation because they don’t fit in the basic foundation undertones: yellow, peach, pink, olive or beige. These clients actually need a combination of more than one of these foundation colors, and often struggle to find the right match. Blending multiple shades is the key to getting the foundation undertone correct for this client. Once you nail the shade, tell your client which shades you blended to create their perfect combination. They are likely to buy those two or three shades from you on the spot. It is also essential to ensure that the value of the foundation is correct. The value is a measure of how light to dark a shade is on a scale. The value does not change the inherent undertone. The

most common foundation values are extra light, light, light medium, medium, medium dark, dark and extra dark. When choosing the right value, consider the lightest and darkest color of the face (such as an age spot or freckle), then choose something in between those shades. If you match just one part of the face, such as the lightest area, the disconnect is easily visible, and looks like a mask once the light foundation shade is applied all over the face.

deciding factor The industry standard when deciding on undertone consists of two main dividing categories: warm and cool. This method is still valid as long as the light used to identify the undertone is full spectrum so all color is seen in the skin. I always prefer full spectrum light when doing makeup. Natural light is the best, but when indoors, specialty bulbs can be used to create full spectrum color. Yellow is the dominant undertone of warm skin, and cool skin has beige or pink undertones. Olive skin can be either warm or cool because it can fall into yellow-olive or beige-olive, which again is a secondary undertone.

color analysis When relying on warm and cool categories, take it a step further to truly understand the color depth of the skin through a color analysis service. The newest color analysis services identify warm, cool, warm neutral and cool neutral; as well as other color characteristics. This is a great add-on service to offer at spas, salons and image consultants. A color analysis reveals undertone by simultaneously draping different colors to see a comparison of which shades look

best. Not only does this give you a good understanding of undertone, it also helps you identify the colors that look best on your client, which makes choosing makeup shades easy. Also, you can give your clients a palate of their best colors as a guide for buying clothes.

tying it all together Foundation is only one of the different complexion perfecting products you need to choose for your client when doing makeup. It is important to keep primers, concealers, highlighters, bronzers and powders in the same tone as they are layered upon each other. Organize your cosmetics by color categories (yellow, pink, peach, beige and olive) as well as by value. This makes selecting your color harmonizing products very easy, and trains the eyes to see undertone. Swiping the colors on a neutral white background such as an artist’s palette is a quick way to help you see which color is prevalent, and what goes with which undertone. Selecting the right undertone in the very beginning of your application saves time and makes your work look flawless. Become an expert in identifying all skin undertones and your diverse client base and retail sales are sure to grow exponentially!  Jaclyn Peresetsky is not only the owner of Skin Perfect Spas in Ohio and Florida, she is also a noted color expert, makeup artist, master esthetician, author and speaker.
