HYALURONIC ACID IN THE TREATMENT ROOM Secrets to a Youthful Appearance by Janel Luu

Last month, we featured an introduction to the benefits of hyaluronic acid in Michael Pugliese’s article "Hyaluronic Acid: What is it?" This month, Janel Luu expands upon this topic to address exactly how it can be incorporated into your treatments and home care recommendations.

skin hyaluronic acid in the treatment room

Did you know that your skin contains its own fountain of youth? It’s called hyaluronic acid (a.k.a. hyaluronan, sodium hyaluronate), an essential water-binding component of skin's extracellular matrix (ECM), where growth factors and structural proteins such as collagen and elastin are located. The good news: Skin contains more than 50 percent of the body’s natural hyaluronic acid, a jello-like substance that attracts water and expands it up to 1,000 times, keeping skin plump, smooth and supple. The bad news: With age, the body produces less hyaluronic acid. Skin loses moisture, becomes thinner, less supple, and takes longer to repair itself. Collagen fibers become brittle and break down, leading to wrinkling, sagging and other signs of aging. 14

june2017

LNEonline.com

THE METAMORPHOSIS OF HYALURONIC ACID How can you use hyaluronic acid to help clients recover a more youthfullooking appearance? In the past, injectable facial fillers containing hyaluronic acid acted as an inflated cushion to fill out sagging, wrinkled skin. For clients leery of injectables, topically applied hyaluronic acid is a powerful humectant that plumps away wrinkles and helps protect skin against ultraviolet-induced damage. As an added benefit, HA is non-occlusive and ideal for all skin conditions, including oily, acne-prone, eczema-prone or sensitive skin types. However, in this age of scientific advancement, hyaluronic acid has completely changed. Old-school HA is made up of molecular chains too large to penetrate skin. This large molecular weight provides remarkable skin care benefits, but they are limited to sur-

face moisturizing. Thanks to advanced technology, HA has undergone a paradigm shift: lower molecular weights of HA have recently become available to the skin care industry. SIZE MATTERS (MOLECULAR, THAT IS) Not all hyaluronic acid is the same. Manufacturers offer high molecular weight HA, low molecular weight HA and various forms in between. The specific benefits are determined by the molecular size. High molecular weight HA (1,000 kilodaltons and above) is too large to penetrate skin, so it stays on the surface for a film-forming, moisturizing effect. Hyaluronic acid at medium and low molecular weights (under 1,000 kilodaltons) is small enough to seep into skin. Holding water in the extracellular matrix, low molecular weight HA promotes elasticity and repair. There, collagen and elastin fibers stiffen and

skin hyaluronic acid in the treatment room deteriorate over time, like aging rubber bands. Low molecular weight HA keeps those fibers moist to help maintain skin suppleness and elasticity on the inside. High molecular weight HA prevents loss of moisture on the outside. HYALURONIC ACID: THE RISING STAR IN THE TREATMENT ROOM For optimal benefits in the treatment room and for home care, it is important to use multiple molecular weights of hyaluronic acid to successfully address a variety of skin issues. From Dry to Dewy DRY, IRRITATED, ECZEMA-PRONE SKIN: Chronic dryness and dehydration are common concerns for clients, especially when seasonal changes wreak havoc on moisture levels. Treating this issue has two phases. On the surface, high molecular weight HA relieves dryness by adding moisture and then seals it in to protect skin from further dryness and damage. In the ECM, low molecular weight HA bathes collagen and elastin fibers in fluid, preventing them from drying out and disintegrating. Imagine hyaluronic acid as a soaked sponge underneath the skin surface, attracting moisture, holding it and continually providing moisture throughout the day. It's like giving skin a long, steady drink of water. In the treatment room: 1. Conduct a skin analysis. 2. Use a gentle, hydrating cleanser. 3. Prep skin with enzyme peel. 4. Perform extractions if needed, then apply toner. 5. Apply an even layer of HA to soothe. 6. Perform microcurrent, galvanic, ultrasonic or micro-needling procedure (optional). 7. Massage HA + growth factor serum into skin to rebuild and replenish. 8. Apply corrective mask (i.e., sheet

mask, modeling mask, hydrolyzed collagen mask, lifting mask). 9. After removing mask, massage HA + peptide + antioxidant + stem cell serum into skin to rejuvenate. 10. Apply HA to face and lips. 11. Apply moisturizer, eye cream and sun protection.

Anti-Aging: It's All About that Base MATURE SKIN:

"Break Out" the Bottle of HA

Retaining moisture is the basis of antiaging treatments. Collagen and elastin are vital for youthful-looking skin, but hyaluronic acid is necessary for strengthening these structural proteins. While we know that high molecular weight HA restores moisture, plumps, and smoothes out wrinkles, the latest research shows that low molecular weight HA regulates inflammatory response and assists in skin renewal, also essential in treating mature, photo-damaged skin.

ACNE-PRONE SKIN:

In the treatment room:

Medication for acne often contains harsh ingredients that dry skin out and leave it flaky, irritated and screaming for moisture. High molecular weight hyaluronic acid is an ideal moisturizer since it will not clog pores. Low m o l e c u la r w eight H A ha s a ntiinflammatory properties and assists in skin repair.

1. Conduct a skin analysis. 2. Use a gentle cleanser. 3. Prep skin with an enzyme peel or microdermabrasion. 4. Perform extractions if needed. 5. Apply even layer of HA to soothe. 6. Perform microcurrent, galvanic, ultrasonic or micro-needling procedure (optional). 7. Massage HA + growth factor serum into skin to rebuild. 8. Apply corrective mask (modeling mask, hydrolyzed collagen mask, lifting mask). 9. After removing mask, massage HA + peptide + antioxidant + stem cell serum into skin to rejuvenate. 10. Apply HA to face and lips. 11. Apply moisturizer, eye cream and sun protection.

For home care, layer HA with serums containing growth factors, stem cells, peptides and antioxidants, followed by an occlusive cream, oil or nighttime sleep mask.

In the treatment room: 1. Conduct a skin analysis. 2. Use a salicylic or mandelic acid-based cleanser. 3. Prep skin with salicylic or mandelic acid-based exfoliant. 4. Perform extractions. 5. Apply HA to soothe. 6. Perform blue LED procedure (optional). 7. Massage HA into skin to rebuild and replenish. 8. Add HA to corrective mask (clay or enzyme mask). 9. Apply HA to face and lips. 10. Apply eye cream and sun protection. For home care, keep acne-prone skin under control by using HA to restore moisture. Avoid using rich cream moisturizers, which can clog pores and prevent moisture from getting into skin, prolonging the vicious cycle of irritated, inflamed skin.

For home care, layer HA with serums containing growth factors, stem cells, peptides and antioxidants. Getting to the Point: Micro-needling VARIOUS SKIN CONDITIONS: Micro-needling treatments treat numerous skin concerns, including hyperpigmentation, sagging, lines and wrinkles, large pores and superficial acne scarring. Driving high and low molecular weights of hyaluronic acid into punctured skin helps promote collagen and elastin synthesis. In the treatment room: 1. Skin analysis. Explain length of treatment + post care program. Treatments

given once per week for four weeks, then once every two to three months. 2. Apply anesthetic product. Cleanse and disinfect. 3. Apply even layer of hyaluronic acid. 4. Perform procedure with consistent motion using needle tool. 5. Apply mineral-based recovery solution to soothe. 6. Apply HA and growth factor serums. 7. Apply sheet mask. Do not rinse. For home care, apply mineralbased solution, multi-weight HA and growth factor serum to promote re p a i r. C o m p l i a n c e w i t h h o m e care accelerates skin recovery and enhances results. *Check your state board for rules and regulations on micro-needling in your area.

CHANGING THE FACE OF SKIN CARE Don't limit yourself to the traditional form of hyaluronic acid now that lower molecular weight (LMW-HA) is readily available to the skin care industry. The key to increasing the efficacy and scope of all of your facial treatments is using HA in a variety of molecular weights, ranging from high to low. The more HA you introduce into the skin, the younger it looks. Ensure that there are multiple forms of HA in the products you use. Look for medium to low hyaluronic acid labeled as "MMW-HA" or "LMW-HA" on the packaging. On the ingredient list, check for hyaluronic acid, hyaluronan or sodium hyaluronate (high molecular weight above 1,000 kilodaltons), oligosaccharide HA (low molecular weight under 10 kilodaltons) and other innovative forms of HA. Finally, to truly elevate your anti-aging facial treatments, pair multi-weight HA with growth factors, stem cells, peptides and antioxidants. Don't miss out on this new generation of hyaluronic acid! You'll help your clients tap into their personal fountain of youth. ď Ž

INTENSIFYING

INGREDIENTS PRODUCT BOOSTERS FOR ENHANCING SKIN CARE TREATMENTS by Manuela Ferro and Adriana Rodriguez

skin intensifying ingredients

B

oosters are products designed to supplement, strengthen and enhance the results of a specific skin care treatment with potent active ingredients. They can come in various forms, including liquid, ampoule, gel and powder, and usually contain one or more ingredients with high concentrations that boost luminosity, hydration, even skin tone, enhance firming and give energy to the skin. Boosters essentially rebalance the skin to make it look glowing and smooth. Their methods of application vary, and are specific to each product. Some are applied to skin before other topical products, while others are directly mixed into the products they enhance.

VITAMIN C

This key vitamin provides advanced environmental protection, prevents oxidative damage, participates in collagen synthesis, increases skin moisture and is clinically proven to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and promotes a natural skin tone by neutralizing free radicals. As a booster treatment, vitamin C can be added in the form of an ampoule, a mist or a serum to improve brightening of the skin and prevention of DNA damage. It also creates a great synergy when using retinol.

DMAE

D M A E (Dimethylaminoethanol) increases superficial firmness of the skin (firming action), stimulating muscular activity and generating a stretching and lifting effect (tensing e ff e c t ) , w h i c h i n c re a s e s s k i n ’s elasticity and aids in the reduction of wrinkles. DMAE can be used in moisturizing serums, creams or gels for daily use and as ampoules or masks for intensive care to boost the firming action of a facial or any other intensive professional treatments; they can even be added to conductor gels.

GLYCOLIC ACID

The moisturizing, regenerating and renewing properties of glycolic acid balance the skin, increasing collagen synthesis and elastin with a light exfoliating effect that improves signs of aging for smoother, more uniform skin with less imperfection. It is added to many anti-aging and hydration products for daily care and can be used during professional facials in the form of ampoules and serums for a deeper treatment.

HYALURONIC ACID

HA can trap 1,000 times its weight in water, making it essential for hydrating dry or dehydrated skins. It can be added to any moisturizer for daily care and also in ampoule form to boost any professional treatment. It is the ingredient used in fillers for rejuvenation. When added to retinol, HA helps boost the hydration, making the retinol more tolerable to the skin.

ATP

ATP (Adenosine triphosphate) is a powerful energy charger for skin cells. It is ideal for skins suffering from contamination, poor diet, smoking, physical or emotional stress. ATP activates cell metabolism, and can be added to any treatment to promote cellular energy. It can be added to moisturizers, serums or used in the form of a mist to boost any treatment.

FERULIC ACID

Ferulic acid is effective in the prevention and treatment of skin photoaging. It aids in lightening blemishes, preventing photoaging and protecting the skin from free radical damage. It can be used in combination with vitamin C to increase the antioxidant capacity of a product or alone as a booster to a moisturizing serum or cream. It can also extend the capacity of SPF in any product.

MAKEUP

Boosters can even provide a beautifying effect beyond skin care! Applying a vitamin C ampoule prior to foundation gives the skin an extra glow and luminosity. An ampoule of hyaluronic acid can add hydration to the look. ď Ž Manuela Ferro is the U.S. marketing manager at Sesderma, a European laboratory that specializes in the encapsulation of active ingredients using nanotechnology. corneotherapy UNDERSTANDING THE STRUCTURES AND FUNCTIONS OF THE STRATUM CORNEUM

A

s an esthetician, you are always working with the skin’s barrier, otherwise known as the stratum corneum. However you may unknowingly injure this top layer of the skin. In order to avoid this, it is important to understand a skin treatment approach known as corneotherapy, which refers to therapeutic interventions aimed at repairing stratum corneum barriers that have been damaged by skin disorders. Corneotherapy centers on corneobiology, an anatomy, physiology and biology of the stratum corneum-based science. The original masterminds behind this concept were Albert Kligman, M.D., and Peter Elias, M.D. In the latter half of the 20th century, Dr. Kligman conducted experiments that demonstrated that the stratum corneum was not only a barrier to the environment, but a biologically active

cellular tissue. These discoveries led to a whole new understanding of skin treatments. Dr. Kligman coined the term “corneotherapy” to refer to these therapies. Working with Dr. Elias, the two scientists identified an abundance of functions and qualities of the stratum corneum. (See sidebar below)

key qualities and functions of the stratum corneum Permeable Antimicrobial Psychosensory Antioxidant enzyme activity Cohesion and desquamation Mechanical Chemical Hydration Generates natural moisturizing factor (NMF) and the permeability barrier enables the skin to hold water Protection (against carcinogens and photoaging) Cytokine activation Regulates immunity Stores topical products

skin corneotherapy

Since an esthetician can work on the stratum corneum through a variety of modalities, it is essential that they understand these structures and functions in order to avoid harming the skin. From a holistic approach to skin care, the entire system is compromised when the barrier function is impaired.

STRUCTURE OF STRATUM CORNEUM Corneocytes Corneocytes are the “dead” cells on the skin’s barrier, the target of exfoliation. These are filled with keratin proteins that are key to maintaining the mechanical integrity of skin. More than 20 different proteins surround the cor-

neocyte, cross-linking through chemical connections. Their purpose is to resist the daily mechanical stress skin encounters. Corneocytes contain proteins that are digested by enzymes called proteases, which produce smaller molecules that provide the skin’s natural moisturizing factor (NMF) that attracts and binds water, which is essential to a healthy skin barrier.

Lipids Lipids, also known as lamellar membranes, surround the corneocyte. A healthy lamellar membrane has lipids in the correct ratio of sterols (cholesterol) to ceramides to free fatty acids (1:1:1). This ratio must be maintained for a healthy permeability barrier, which is essential to preventing water loss

as well as keeping pollutants such as free radicals and toxins from entering the skin. Despite containing "dead" corneocytes, the stratum corneum is metabolically active. Enzymes and signaling molecules called cytokines direct the epidermis to shed dead skin cells, reduce inflammation, increase lipid production and create new cells. The surface of the stratum corneum is the acid mantle. When the pH of the acid mantle is altered from its naturally acidic state, signaling processes activate the skin’s natural healing process. Chronic damage to the acid mantle results in chronic inflammation, as well as reduced UVB protection and waterholding capabilities.

skin corneotherapy

TREATMENT ROOM APPLICATION Translating the fundamentals of corneotherapy into the treatment room begins by identifying an impaired barrier, which can be indicated by inflammatory conditions or autoimmune diseases. Following the principles of corneotherapy can prevent further damage from chronic inflammatory processes that impact the skin. Consider the following treatment room applications:

Skin care. Maintaining the correct pH of the acid mantle is essential to preventing and repairing a disrupted skin barrier. A barrier repair cream should have the correct key species of lipids in a molar ratio of 1:1:1. Note that emulsifiers in formulations can disrupt the skin’s barrier and cause allergic reactions. Furthermore, although each barrier protection cream is different, many prevent the skin from stopping transepidermal water loss (TEWL), which can disrupt the stratum corneum function 24

june2017

LNEonline.com

and repair. Avoid highly alkalizing cleansers such as soap, as well as ingredients such as artificial fragrance, preservatives, colorants, mineral oils and other petroleum-based products.

Exfoliation. Exfoliation is a vital part of skin’s restoration. Not only does it help to improve the collagen production and cell turnover rate, it also eliminates lesions caused by acne, minimizes pore size and improves the epidermal density. Signs of excessive exfoliation and a compromised barrier include dehydration, skin tautness, redness, inflammation and increased sensitivity. Avoid harsher treatments such as dermaplaning and chemical peels on those with a compromised barrier.

Stimulating modalities.

Take caution when performing modalities designed to stimulate epidermal cells or promote inflammation. In particular, avoid microneedling, microcurrent, LED, laser, IPL and radiofrequency for clients who have a compromised barrier. These treatments may work

well for clients whose barrier has been repaired, however.

STAY TUNED… While the principles of this highly studied approach are clear, the sciences of corneobiology and corneotherapy are continuing to evolve, and their applications within the professional skin field are still advancing. 

Bamford’s signature treatment, The Ultimate Bamford Experience (90 minutes/$245), incorporates global traditions and healing therapies together to provide clients with a full body treatment that focuses on both the physical and spiritual elements of the body. The treatment begins with a cleansing foot bath ritual. A copper pedicure bowl is filled with warm water and Bamford bath salts made from Epsom and deep cleansing sea salts. Geranium essential oil is blended into the bath not only to soften the water and soothe the skin, but also to bring balance to the mind during the

beginning of the treatment. Following the footbath, the client’s muscles and energy channels are penetrated with a Meridian and Swedish massage using one of three Bamford oils: balancing, energizing or relaxing. The therapist performs this reflexology-inspired massage on the full body of the client to help encourage the positive flow of energy and to detoxify the organs. A pressure point massage is then performed on the client’s face, neck, shoulders and scalp to deeply relax and uplift the body. The treatment culminates with an assisted yogic breathing session to refresh the lungs and revitalize the client’s body. On a monthly basis, spa management and all employees have a departmental meeting to discuss any upcoming events, specials or additions to the spa menu. Spa employees also participate in daily rallies with the hotel staff where they communicate about happenings in the hotel as well as address any internal concerns, suggestions or recognitions. Staff performance at the Bamford Haybarn Spa will be reviewed on a yearly basis and follow the expectations of Forbes Five Star standards, which critique employees on top-notch customer service, genuine interest in

the industry of their work and their ability to exceed expectations of the company. To continue to incentivize employees to meet these standards, Stavnjak offers monetary bonuses as well as high commissions for all retail product sales. Employees of the spa are also given the opportunity to win free spa services if they exceed expectations for the year.

Special Events and Promotions The spa is in the process of planning an ongoing monthly event in which local clients are able to come to the spa and experience two 15-minute services, socialize with friends and meet new people for a few hours for $65. feng

shui TURNING YOUR SPA INTO A HEALING OASIS by Lisa Kyte If you are a spa owner, esthetician, massage therapist, acupuncturist or M.D. and you are seeking to enhance your practice by creating an environment that is healing, relaxing and rejuvenating, complementing your business with feng shui techniques is one way to help it become more financially productive, spiritually enriched and aesthetically pleasing.

WHAT IS FENG SHUI?

Feng shui is an ar tistic design method for arranging the interior of your environment in a balanced and harmonious way with the natural world around you. The words “Feng” and “Shui” literally mean “wind” and “water.” The principle can be incorporated into the designs of a spa to guide clients into feeling more cozy and comfor table and help staff members feel more relaxed and confident, both of which increase business success.

OUR ENVIRONMENTS AFFECT US ON THE MOLECULAR LEVEL

Dr. Masaru Emoto projected different types of thoughts onto glasses of water, froze them and examined the developed water crystals under a microscope. He discovered that the water crystals infused with higher vibrational thoughts like “love” or “joy” formed beautiful patterns, while those with negative thoughts like “hate” or “anger” were rough, opaque and in a state of chaos. Contemplate this: given that 75 percent of your body is water, how could YOUR environment be influencing it?

DOES YOUR ENVIRONMENT SUPPORT YOUR BUSINESS?

Feng shui is a powerful mechanism that can help alter an environment to support the needs of its inhabitants. The term is originally the Chinese name for an ancient and universal discipline

that analyzes and studies the influence of our environments on the well-being of its population. This technique was known as “Geomancy” in the West and has been practiced actively throughout history across the world. The great pyramids of Egypt, Mayan temples and even the great cathedrals across Europe honor certain dimensions and placements that support the purpose of these sacred places.

UNDERSTANDING FENG SHUI CHI AS ENERGY

Chi is the constantly moving and changing energy and life force around us that makes us feel either good or bad in a particular location. Chi can accumulate in the objects around us and in our homes or offices; it flows in through the door and out through the windows. The goal of feng shui practices is to keep the chi flowing gently throughout the environment,

rather than running straight through it. Chi can have a negative effect on your surroundings if it becomes stuck or blocked. Feng shui Bagua is one of the main tools used in feng shui to analyze the energy of any given space; it is an energy map of your space that shows which areas of your home or office are connected to specific areas of your life. Feng shui advocates believe everything in the universe belongs to one of the five elements: Fire, Earth, Metal, Water and Wood.

FIRE red, orange, pink, lights, candle flames, triangular shapes

CREATE AN ENVIRONMENT THAT IS HEALING, REJUVENATING AND FINANCIALLY PRODUCTIVE  Entrance: The entrance to your spa represents how the world encounters your spa and symbolizes the opportunities flowing inside your business. The main door should be attractive, easy to open, and uncluttered so it can open completely.  Reception Place mirrors, a small water fountain, and a ceiling fan in the space to create a flow and movement of positive energy for your clients. Decorate the area with landscape artwork, lush plants or an aquarium.  Waiting Area When using feng shui techniques in the design of a spa, it is important to create a space with soft edges so that nothing sharp or pointed is directed at your clients. This translates into soft chairs, gentle lighting in a clutter-free waiting area and plants placed in front of any harsh angles to diminish them.  Treatment Rooms When possible, position your client’s head so that she or he can see the door, and avoid placing them close to the room entrance. The most vulnerable position is lying with the feet facing directly at the door, which is considered the “death position” because it is the way coffins are carried out of the room in Asia. Placing the table at an angle and using a screen near the door can give your client a sense of comfort, privacy and power.  Colors Colors on the walls of your spa can make a huge impact on how clients experience your space and will

ultimately contribute to the success of your business. For both the waiting area and practice rooms, choose either soft “skin-tone” colors or muted shades of green, which is the color is associated with growth, healing and new energy. The administrative and office areas can be enriched with the color red.  Decoration and Art Place a bowl of smooth polished river rocks in the reception area in each treatment room to encourage grounding. Stones connect us to the earth and represent stability. Inside rooms without windows display landscape art and images of nature to create a connection to the natural growing world outside. Choose full, bushy plants with rounded leaves and avoid cacti as well as any plants with spiky leaves. Finally, keep in mind that just because things are unseen to the naked eye does not mean they do not exist. Tap into the right flow to enjoy the luck and prosperity brought by feng shui. The art and science of feng shui revolve around the goal of creating a harmonious environment w h e re f re e - f l o w i n g e n e rg y c a n improve a person’s luck, opportunities and attitude. 

The Beach House Spa is a beachthemed luxury day spa that offers a full menu of treatments including massage therapy, couples massage, facial treatments, body wraps, body scrubs and hair removal services. Everything our clients need to keep their beach body on point!

I understand that running a spa is a marathon, not a sprint. I meditate and go to the gym a few times a week, which is my Zen time to myself! I make it a point not to take any stress home with me.

FACILITY

We opened only about two years ago now. We are going through the normal growing pains that all new spas can expect. Finding people that share our vision for the spa was definitely one of our main struggles upon opening, but I have been blessed to accumulate a great team of employees!

cific needs. Our most popular scrub is the Sea Salt and Pearl Scrub, which is a very fresh and airy scent that reminds our clients of a day at the beach.

What takes most of your time every day? Massaging clients, making sure everything is running smoothly in the spa, taking care of any upsets and scheduling as many appointments as possible. I am always wearing the hat of the spa owner, head massage therapist and receptionist.

TEAM BUILDING

EXCEPTIONAL CLIENT CARE

How many employees do you have and what are their specialties?

them to set themselves apart and figure out what works best for them while still maintaining my expectations of a Beach House Spa employee.

I have two estheticians and three massage therapists, counting myself as a massage therapist.

How do you keep your employees happy and incentivized?

We have a client referral program that rewards clients one free service for every five referrals they send us. We also have a client loyalty program that rewards a client a free facial or massage for every 10 visits.

What is your hiring process? My prospective employees first have an interview via phone and if I feel like they could be an aspect to The Beach House Spa, I bring them in for a face-toface interview. After speaking with them in person, I decide to either let them go or ask them to follow up with a live demonstration of their particular service specialty. After a successful demonstration of their service, I invite them to our employee-training program.

How do you select the people that work with you? I look for people who are not only team players, but who are also extremely customer service oriented. We strive to make each client’s experience unforgettable and I will only hire someone whom I feel can provide that every single day.

How do you evaluate employees?

I take them out to lunch or dinner about every six weeks and share any news in the business and the industry and they offer their feedback. It is very important for me to listen to my employees so they know their opinions are important to me. This keeps them feeling like a crucial part of the company, which keeps them happy and incentivized to perform better.

RETAIL What are your retail goals? My goal is to double our retail sales by the end of the calendar year. We spotlight certain products each month, which helps us give our clients plenty of chances to try our products. We offer free samples and slight discounts on the products we feature monthly.

What incentives do you have for your staff to reach these goals?

I conduct employee evaluations annually. I pay attention to client retention and ability to continuously satisfy clients. My definition of a great employee is a self-starter who makes sure our clients are comfortable, satisfied and never neglected. If I feel my employees maintain that stature throughout the year, I reward them with bonuses.

When my employees sell any retail they receive 10 percent off the profit on top of what they receive for their esthetic work. If they reach their monthly personal goal, which they set at the beginning of each month, they are rewarded with cash bonuses.

How do you train your staff?

What is your best form of marketing?

After bringing them on board, I ask them to explain and show me their specific techniques and then, if needed, I critique them to what I believe should always be offered at The Beach House Spa. It is very important to me that I let my employees have their own signature style within each service. This allows

Right now our best and most efficient marketing technique is word of mouth. We are always walking around the area and talking to local businesses about promotions or specials we have coming up. YOUR

SEO CAMPAIGN Creating a strategy, optimizing your skin care and spa business by Lance Bachmann

T

he digital landscape is a competitive environment. In order to stand out and attract more clientele to your spa or skin care-based business, you must have an online presence. It starts with getting your website found in search engines, and setting up a basis for a search engine optimization (SEO) campaign.

business your seo campaign

Search engine optimization helps you hone in on your target audience and drives converting traffic to your website so that visitors can call and make an appointment, sign up for an email list or inquire about a service or product that your business offers. Ninety-one percent of products or services bought or found online start with a search engine, and more than 93 percent of online experiences begin with a search engine, so the need for SEO is crucial. Your target consumers are searching for your products or services online. Don’t let your competitors earn these consumers’ business! Set up an SEO campaign to drive traffic to your website and increase your clientele. The concept of SEO and optimizing the pages on your website may seem like a difficult task to accomplish. It’s important to understand that the digital landscape continues to change, but setting a strong foundation today

will lead to positive results that grow your business.

Starting an SEO Strategy The goal of any campaign is to improve your brand awareness, rise to the top of search results for relevant queries to your products and services, and strengthen the credibility of your company. You can make that happen by taking the proper steps. Start by analyzing your competition; determine who your biggest competitors are. You can search relevant terms to see which queries they are being found through search, and you can also use analysis tools such as SEMRush, SpyFu and Majestic SEO. A competitor analysis reveals the following:  

Which Search Terms Your Competition is Ranking For The Strength of Their Domains

 

Which Websites are Linking to Your Competitors How Ad Campaigns Complement Organic SEO for Your Competition

This first step determines how you ultimately start your campaign. Then you can move on to the actual setup and optimization of your website, leveraging it over your competition.

Optimizing the SEO for Your Spa and Esthetics Business Once you learn what your competitors are doing and how their websites are performing online, it’s time to dive deep and get your strategy underway. For local SEO, it is essential to target the locations that generate most of your customers and clients. Before starting the SEO process, make sure your

business your seo campaign

business listings are set up accurately and consistently across directories. From Google My Business to Bing Places for Business and other local directories, keep a consistent business name, address and phone number across the board; this helps your business stand out. Listings are important for local SEO, and once you have a Google My Business profile set up, your business will start appearing in the Knowledge Panel and local pack on Google’s search results pages. While there is no one-size-fits-all formula to improve your rankings, focus on these areas to increase your online visibility:

In your initial research, don’t just target the most searched queries. There are three distinct types of search queries, classified as navigational, informational or transactional. Target the transactional queries, where users want to learn more, view products, buy something or download something. For transactional queries, think about where your customers are located and the core keywords they’re searching. Through research, you can see an approximation of monthly search queries for a given keyword. Consider terms like “health and wellness spa + your city,” “esthetician + your city,” “Swedish massage + your city,” “tinted moisturizer,” “anti-aging treatments + your city,” etc. Think about the services and products offered and what your customers are looking for from your company.

Focus on going after the converting terms. Informational and general queries, such as “skin care products” or “beauty products,” are nearly impossible to rank for when you’re setting up your SEO campaign. Check queries on Google Trends and also manually check them in the search bar to see which websites are shown. Look for opportunities to leverage your website over theirs and win for that search term. The more search terms you can leverage, the better your website will perform, but it takes a concerted effort. It’s much more than selecting keywords; they have to be implemented correctly onto your website and seen as relevant to display in search results.

On-Page Optimization and Site Functionality Always keep user experience in mind. The more users have to click and navigate, the more frustrated they become and the more likely they are to end up on your competitor’s site. Map keywords out to particular landing pages. For example, your core keyword of “health and wellness spa” should be directed to your home page where you talk about your spa. In contrast, you should have a separate landing page for “Swedish massage” and direct users searching for that particular massage to the appropriate page, discussing the benefits and values of a Swedish massage. Include a unique title tag and meta description on each page of the site as well, as these are seen on a search results page.

On-page optimization also includes:  Optimizing images.  Including internal links from one page to another on your site (both for simpler navigation and improved SEO).  A healthy amount of content (avoid thin and overly stuffed copy).  Open Graph (OG) title and description for social media shares.  Heading tags (and subheadings – H1, H2, etc.) with supporting content. Even with all of these aspects optimized correctly, think about how the site functions. Is it mobile friendly? How is the page load speed? Problems in these areas can deter a potential client from navigating through your site. Mobile traffic has surpassed desktop, so make sure you’re optimizing for mobile users and presenting your information as quickly as possible.

Earning Links and Auditing Ensure that there are no technical problems or issues with the website by conducting audits to ensure everything is in place. Set up a Google Analytics account to understand which pages are performing and which need adjustments. Within the platform, you can see the average amount of time spent on each page, where you have a high bounce rate (those clicking off your site within three seconds), and your highest exit pages. Analyze your backlink profile to see which sites are linking to you. This is where you’ll have to build or earn links from authority sources to your site. The higher your trust and domain authority, the better your site will perform for relevant queries. Set up your website in Google Search Console to identify any

underlying issues. Find out which search queries are leading to your website and build on those. Determine which third-party sites are linking to your content, and whether Google is having any problems crawling your website. Google Search Console gives you valuable insights into the audit process to see if anything needs to be modified on your website. The SEO process is lengthy and ongoing. After you set a solid SEO foundation you must continue to monitor and build off of it.

The Metrics to Follow-Up and Tracking Your Campaign When you’re just starting your SEO strategy, you must look into all aspects of your site for best performance. How are you going to leverage your brand over the competition without understanding what it is that they’re targeting and the traffic they’re driving to their website? Throughout the process, continue to dive into the metrics and track your campaign. There are always adjustments to be made and tweaks that can go a long way into solidifying your brand as a trusted spa and esthetics company. To strengthen your brand awareness and entire online presence, be active on social media, run paid digital campaigns, send emails to your customers and potential clients, and establish a content marketing strategy. With increasing competition, it takes an integrated, multi-faceted approach to get the most of your SEO and digital marketing. Putting all the pieces together effectively grows your business.  Lance Bachmann is the founder and president of 1SEO.com Digital Agency, a full-service global digital marketing firm based in the Philadelphia, Penn., area. SUMMER CRAZE GUIDE

LEMONADE When just about anyone thinks of summer — especially their childhood summers — lemonade stands often spring to mind. That nostalgic memory is what inspired Sage Springs Club & Spa at Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Ore., to serve up two lemonade-themed treatments: Spiked Lemonade Massage (50 minutes, $115) and Warm Oil Massage and Spiked Lemonade Scrub (75 minutes, $175). "Lemon has always been one of my favorite scents in the spa. I can close my eyes and almost hear the sounds of my friends splashing their feet in the water while sipping a refreshing glass of lemonade,” says Tifany LeGuyonne, spa manager and spa wedding specialist at Sunriver Resort Sage Springs Spa at Sunriver Resort. “We really love our seasons here in Sunriver and we love finding unique ways to celebrate them." The Spiked Lemonade Massage uses lemon in the essential oil for the customized massage, as well as in the body butter applied as a finishing touch on the feet. "The lemon essential oil is the refreshing foundation of the scent, but the organic whiskey [i.e., the "spiked" part of the treatment] is what gives life to product," says LeGuyonne. For the Warm Oil Massage and Spiked Lemonade Scrub, the scrub is made with lemon peel, organic lemon essential oil and organic whiskey. "The skin definitely needs the exfoliation after braving the cold harsh winters and it's a perfect way to prepare the skin for a spray tan,” she adds. “Even self-bronzers will perform better after an exfoliation. It's a great way to get your summer tan to really glow in the summer."

HIBISCUS & COCONUT Another staple of summer are brightly colored and sweet-smelling flowers, such as Hibiscus, the flower often seen behind the ears of Hawaiian hula dancers. Hualalai Spa at Four Seasons Resort Hualalai in Kailua Kona, Hawaii has combined this flower with one of summer's favorite snacks, coconut, for their popular Hibiscus and Coconut Milk Water Cure (50 minutes, $160 / 80 minutes, $240). "Combing the earthy smell of coconut with the tangy and sweet Hibiscus is really what the aroma of Hawaii is all about,” says spa and sports club director Crystal PoeCabatbat. “The coconut is very grounding and together the scent is calming and relaxing for the body and mind." The treatment begins with dry brushing with a boar bristle brush to aid circulation and rid the body of tired skin cells, followed by a massage on the head, neck, shoulders and feet before soaking in the tub. The bath itself is filled with water, moisturizing vitamin-rich coconut milk (which helps to soften and replenish the skin), tea bags filled with coconut flakes and dried hibiscus flowers for the aromatherapy aspect of the treatment, and a dash of rice powder, which helps to exfoliate and brighten the skin.

"A water cure is just another name for a therapeutic bath experience,” adds Poe-Cabatbat. “The dry brushing and massage helps with the body's lymphatic system, allows for really nice exfoliation, and assists in increased energy and blood flow. And then the bath helps to relieve an achy body, reduce stress, calm the mind, allows to naturally induce sleep."

CITRUS & FRUIT Fresh fruit and citrus trees are what make the Citrus Pa'akai Scrub (50 minutes, $185/80 minutes, $245) at Hualalai Spa a popular summer treat. Pa'akai is the Hawaiian word for salt. This treatment blends together local lemon salt, lemon and orange peel, and passion fruit extracts for an invigorating and exfoliating body scrub, which finishes with a passion fruit and lemon body butter for ultra hydration. "The citrus scent really invigorates the senses, waking up the body and mind,” says Poe-Cabatbat. “It's very uplifting and energizing, gets the circulation moving, and brightens up your body and mind as well as your skin." Poe-Cabatbat says this treatment is popular year round with women, but mostly in the summer, for clients who want to show off a youthful skin. "The more you exfoliate the healthier and more vibrant your skin appears," she adds.

SUMMER CRAZE GUIDE

NIGHT BLOOMING JASMINE

HONEY & ROSES

Night-blooming jasmine is the star ingredient of Sun & Moon (60 minutes, $205) at Kohanaiki Spa at Kohanaiki Golf & Ocean Club in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii due to its bold, floral fragrance. Billed as an after-sun treatment, this cooling, relaxing service includes a soothing body wrap featuring aloe, lavender and cucumber, as well as an aloe and cucumber face mask that hydrates and refreshes and a comforting head, neck and foot massage using wild crafted massage oil containing nightblooming jasmine. "Our night-blooming jasmine scent is reminiscent of a garden full of blossoming summer flowers,” says spa manager Karen Cosgrove. “But, besides being extremely fragrant, it's also a relaxer and it has antiseptic properties that help keep skin infections at bay. It's wonderful for the scalp and hair because it moisturizes the hair and scalp, strengthens the hair root, and treats dry and brittle hair, which adds luster and smoothness to all hair types."

Honeybees buzzing around the garden are another staple of summertime, which is why honey treatments are a perfect fit for the season. The Honey Rose Body Treatment (80 minutes, $200/105 minutes, $260 Monday-Thursday or $225/$285 on weekends) at Glade

Spring Spa at Suncadia Resort in Cle Elum, Wash. The treatment begins with an inhalation of a rose neroli oil blend to relax and introduce the guest to the aromatic scent of the products being used. Next comes a full body exfoliation using unscented bath salts mixed with the rose neroli oil, which is immediately followed by an application of warm honey (mixed with a small amount of water and rose neroli oil to reach a smooth consistency). During the 10-minute wrap in an insulated blanket, guests receive a face and scalp massage using organic calendula oil. After the wrap, the guest showers off and returns to the massage table where the therapist finishes the treatment with a light massage application of the rose neroli oil.

"We use raw honey (unprocessed) from a local farm for its anti-bacterial properties and high content of antioxidants,” says spa director Karen Erickson. “Honey does wonders for the skin because it acts as a moisturizer and anti-aging agent. Since honey doesn't really have a distinctive scent, we add just a little of the rose neroli oil to it for the continuation of that aromatic smell throughout the treatment." 

Places Treatments for the Back, Butt and Feet by Carrie Borzillo

Summer's here and that means that clients will be showing more skin than any other time of year. From bikinis and backless dresses to open-toed shoes, the areas of the body that have been hibernating all winter will be getting their day in the sun. That's why it's imperative for spas to remind clients that skin care goes beyond facials and body scrubs. The back, fanny and feet need some extra tender loving care too! Here are three great treatments to give your clients a glow all the way down to their toes.

SUMMER CRAZE GUIDE

1

The Back For a time, back facials were mostly popular with men who suffered from back acne. Today, more women are realizing that their back is just as important as their face when it comes to showing off glowing, radiant skin for the summer. "Clients are realizing that to look great in their bikini or backless dress, they have to pay attention to the whole body,” says Chrysse Preonas, spa director at the Spa at Four Seasons Hotel Denver, Colo. “When you get a back facial, you're revealing that glow and radiance that everyone wants. And, whether you're getting a tan from the sun or from a spray tan, when you exfoliate your entire body, including the back, your tan is more even and stays on longer." The Four Seasons’ Back Facial Bliss (50 minutes, $150) begins with a creamy alpine cleanser followed by a refining exfoliation with rhassoul clay and fine silica crystals. A calming mist and balancing mask comes next, followed by a warm herb-infused oil that's drizzled up and down the spine to prepare it for an energy-balancing massage. It also features a honey and algae gel base with Chinese wild pearl powder. "The rhassoul clay helps to pull out impurities and it's great for hyperpigmentation. We use rosemary in the oil for its detoxifying properties, and the honey and algae gel is for softening and detoxification. The wild pearl powder helps to lighten and brighten the skin," says Preonas.

2

The Butt The P3 Treatment (40 minutes, $99) at ESSpa Kozmetika in Pittsburgh, Penn., stands for “Perfectly Polished Posterior,” which is — as co-owner Scott Kerschbaumer says, just a "nice way of saying 'butt buff'." "We launched it for Valentine's Day because we were looking for a unique

women are realizing that their back is just as important as their face when it comes to showing off glowing, radiant skin for the summer. and fun treatment to cut through the typical clutter, and it was so popular we're keeping it on the menu," he explains. "By targeting an overlooked part of the body that many clients consider to be an issue that they can do nothing about and packaging it as a 'treatment for your significant other' to share the benefits of, we created a service that was at once out of the ordinary, solved a problem, delivered lasting results in a unique way and allowed us to enhance our reputation as a place that thinks outside the box when it comes to proper skin care." Here's how it works: The therapist uses an orbital massage machine to thoroughly knead the client's butt and upper thighs. Then, they change the pad to an ultra-fine grit sandpaper to gently and thoroughly exfoliate the butt. The pad is changed again and the therapist massages in an ultra hydrating moisturizer that the spa makes using raw shea butter and coconut oil. "Your butt never felt so soft and smooth after this treatment! For those clients who need a bit more polishing, we use physical exfoliants, such as salt or sugar or with natural AHA (alpha hydroxy acid), BHA (beta hydroxy acid) or other acids, all of which can be adjusted to meet the requirements of the client,” Kerschbaumer adds.

3

The Feet Heal Your Heels (60 minutes, $75) at Voda Spa in West Hollywood, Calif., takes the pedicure far beyond the typical scrub and polish routine.

The treatment begins with a healing soak, followed by a peppermint foot polish for exfoliation, and hot stone massage for the client's feet, ankles and calves. This is followed by a lavender and peppermint clay wrap. Upon conclusion, the service is completed with a grapefruit-peppermint lotion to rejuvenate the skin, and, of course, nail polish if desired. "This treatment is beyond a pedicure and really addresses the tired, weary and worn feet,” says spa manager Dale Howard. “Often after winter, as summer approaches, you want to get your feet in shape with a mini makeover. The treatment improves circulation, soothes muscle tension plus utilizes clay to draw out impurities." Although the service is primarily enjoyed by women (about 75 percent), Howard says more men are coming in to heal their heels. "Twenty-five percent of clients who come in for this are male, which is still a high number for a unique signature service," he says.

SUMMER CRAZE GUIDE

Caffeine Wrap for Cellulite Wraps that contain caffeine have a multitude of benefits for the skin and the body. Caffeine has the ability to effectively unclog the tissues that have been affected by cellulite and fatty deposits. Because caffeine is a decongestant, incorporating it into a body wrap treatment enables the stimulation of lipolysis (fat burning), targeting fat directly at its storage source. The breakdown of lipids causes a cascading action, which helps with the retrieval of fat cells, inhibits glucose storage and slows the growth of individual fat cells. Within the very deep layers of the skin, adipocytes (fat cells) are located at the epidermis. When this layer is vascularized, the cells accept penetration and absorb a percentage of the caffeine into the blood to promote a faster metabolism. Following a caffeine wrap, the appearance of cellulite is visibly reduced and the tissues are effectively unclogged, resulting in skin that is smoother, softer, firmer and a physique that is noticeably slimmer.

Recommended frequency:

The body naturally begins to re-toxify in 30 to 60 days, so clients should receive treatment no more than twice within that time period.

Post care:

• Drink a pint of water immediately to flush out toxins. • No bathing or swimming for 24 hours. • Wait at least three days before waxing or spray tanning.

Contraindications:

Varicose veins, dizziness, kidney disease, cardiovascular failure, diabetes, hypertension, pregnancy.

Mineral Wrap for Inch Loss and Radiance A mineral wrap is an ancient therapy that promotes lymphatic drainage while nourishing the body with much needed minerals. Mineral wraps are known to nourish the thyroid and restore electrolytes in the body to increase overall energy levels. Although they can create a slightly thinner appearance, they are typically used for loss of water weight, not fat. Once a mineral wrap is applied, the fat cells in the body are compressed as the water weight is removed. The main reason clients seek this mineral wrap therapy is for temporary inch loss — typical results usually last about one week and consist of about one inch all over the body. A mineral wrap is a great option for helping a client to fit into a dress or suit that is too tight for a special occasion. Most people’s bodies are too acidic at the cellular level due to mineral

deficiency, and the pH balance of the body is very important. Mineral wraps aid in cellular respiration and oxygen transportation, making the client look and feel more radiant.

Recommended frequency:

Once a week until achieving client’s desired level of radiance. For maintenance, client should return for wraps several times per year.

Post care:

• Immediately drink a pint of water to offset any dehydrating effects. • No waxing or shaving for four hours. •No bathing or swimming for four hours.

Contraindications:

Open wounds, skin diseases, low blood pressure, epilepsy, pregnancy.

SUMMER CRAZE GUIDE

A unique advantage of offering wrap treatments in your spa is their ability to be easily incorporated into other services. They can be included as part of a package with treatments that complement their benefits, such as a bath, massage or body scrub service. They can also be administered at the same time as a service on an area of the body not treated in the wrap, such as a facial, scalp massage or manicure/ pedicure. This is a win-win situation, saving time for the client while maximizing revenue for the spa!

Caviar Wrap for Skin Firming Once solely known as a decadent and tasty food, caviar has now become a popular ingredient in skin care. Although not designed to help clients shed any inches, a caviar wrap is exfoliating, detoxifying, firming and relaxing for clients. Caviar extract is extremely high in protein and amino acids such as arginine and asparagine, which slow down the aging process while hydrating and firming the skin. Caviar wraps speed up the natural production of collagen in the body and are very rich in vitamins A, D, B1, B2 and B6. Studies have shown that including caviar in your wrap therapy treatments improves skin’s mitochondrial functions and provides anti-inflammatory benefits.

Recommended frequency: Once a week for ideal results.

Post care:

No bathing or swimming for the remainder of the day.

Contraindications:

Skin diseases, open wounds, pregnancy.

Chocolate Wrap for Antioxidant Power Chocolate is not just a treat for the sweet tooth; it is also a powerhouse of nutrients, vitamins and minerals. Packed with cocoa beans and hundreds of coveted nutrients and substances, chocolate has copious amounts of vitamins B1, B2, B3, C and E. Chocolate is also filled with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory phytonutrients, and contains great amounts of flavonoids, which prevent oxidative damage. Compounds of flavonoids, known as catechins, help to prevent cell degeneration and provide anti-cancer properties. The abundance of nutrients in a chocolate body wrap provides exceptional beautifying benefits: Moisturizing lipids plump out wrinkles, polyphenols delay the aging process, and trace minerals such as calcium, iron, phos-

Clay & Mud Wraps for Purifying It may just be dirt to many people, but in the spa industry, mud and clay rank high among the most beneficial ingredients in skin care. Clay and mud wraps target inch loss, tighten, smooth, firm and contour the body. The warmth provided by a clay body wrap improves circulation and relieves aches and joint pain. Wraps made with red clay are especially effective for improving circulation. Clay body wraps can also be made with herbs that are meant to reduce inflammation and pain, such as aloe vera and chamomile. Clay is absorbent, making it efficient in absorbing excess water from skin and creating empty pockets between tissue layers. The pressure of a clay or mud body

wrap compacts the layers of the skin’s tissue, resulting in toned skin and temporary inch loss. Clay and mud wraps also target detoxification by drawing toxins out of the skin. Bentonite clay particles hold a negative electrical charge, while toxins have a positive charge. The negatively charged particles draw the toxins out of skin through the pores. Epsom and sea salts, which are commonly used in clay wraps, also assist in removing toxins from the body. Recommended frequency: Once or twice per week for up to six weeks. Post care: • Drink a pint of water immediately to flush out toxins.

• No bathing or swimming for 24 hours. • Wait at least three days before waxing or spray tanning. • Apply topical contouring products to maintain results. Contraindications: Pregnancy.

Seaweed Wrap for Detoxification Seaweed wraps help to increase circulation, detoxify the body, break up fatty deposits, firm skin and help reduce the appearance of cellulite. BIKINI WAX BOOM Summer’s latest intimate hair removal trends

by Tiely Araujo Bikini waxing is big business. It is no secret that women have long flocked to the spa to tidy up their nether regions, particularly at this time of year in order to be bathing suit-ready in time for beach season. Today’s concept of bikini waxing has evolved far beyond the standard goal of keeping things neat downstairs — it now has become a fashion statement with a variety of styles, and a new expression of individuality on an intimate level. Going bare and getting playful with pubic hair has become so mainstream that men have jumped on the bandwagon as well, adding a new component to manscaping services. As you get ready for the bikini wax boom in your spa this summer, get acquainted with the latest trends in intimate hair removal. LNEonline.com

SUMMER CRAZE GUIDE

FOR HER • The touch up Despite the growing inclination toward more original styles in bikini wax, one that stands the test of time is the traditional tidying up of the panty line area. For this style, hair is removed from anywhere close outside the panty line, near the top of the thighs and bottom of the navel. • Full bikini line Going one step beyond the traditional touch up, a full bikini line wax removes hair around the top and sides of the pubes in addition to the areas right around the panty line, leaving behind a smaller amount of hair. • French For clients who want to go more (but not completely) bare, the French way is a popular option. For this style, the hair on the front and sides of the bikini area is removed, but the hair on the labia and around the back (butt and crack) is left in place. The hair left on the front can be shaped according to the client’s preference. Popular choices include the landing strip, postage stamp shapes and small triangles. • Brazilian Like a French wax, the patch left behind in a Brazilian wax can be made into any shape according to the client’s preferences, and it can be large or small. It differs from the French style in that in addition to taking all the hair off the top and sides of the bikini line, it is removed all the way under and around the back. Essentially, it is like a bikini line wax except that it includes the hair on the labia and back. One popular look is the sparse “deserted island” concept, in which a mini triangle is left on the pubic bone. Another variation of the Brazilian style leaves a larger triangular patch, also known as a “Bermuda Triangle” Brazilian.

74

june2017

LNEonline.com

• Full Brazilian/Hollywood More clients are opting to go completely bare. This style entails the removal of ALL the hair on the bikini zone and beyond. Every last hair is waxed away from the front, middle and behind. Another variation of a full Brazilian entails removal of all the hair from the front, without any hair being removed from the back. • Heart Some clients are choosing to go beyond the clean and sexy and actually getting romantic with their bikini waxes, requesting a patch cleverly shaped into a heart.

* Note that with more complicated shapes such as the heart, you may need to wax in the opposite direction of hair growth, which can lead to ingrown hairs. Advise clients of this risk beforehand and recommend applicable home care.

FOR HIM • Basic bikini line Just like the female version of this style, all the hair that shows around the edges of a bikini or speedo style bottom is removed, leaving the hair of the genital area in place. • Strip and bikini This style is similar to the bikini line wax, but more hair is removed, leaving only a landing strip behind. For this style, the remaining hair is also generally trimmed down to approximately a quarter inch. • Bro-zilian Hair is removed from the shaft and scrotum. An optional addition to this style can include hair removal on the area between the scrotum and butt crack. Some men who request this service also prefer to leave a patch of hair above the shaft in the shape of a square.

more clients are opting to go completely bare. • Full Bro-zilian For this style, ALL genital hair is removed, front to back, including the butt and butt crack. This style can remove hair up to the “speedo line” or it can go further up to the navel. Some men who choose this style opt to go hair free on their entire back as well. • BSC (Back, sack and crack) This is the most all-encompassing bikini wax for men, in which hair is removed from the butt, crack, shaft and scrotum as well as the tops of the arms, shoulders and back.

ALWAYS ASK…

While the terms described in this article are the ones commonly used to refer to specific bikini wax styles, realize that your clients may have a different understanding of what they mean and may even be embarrassed to ask for clarification. Avoid any misunderstandings by asking each client to explain upfront what they envision for their bikini wax. This will avoid any embarrassment on your clients’ part and sidestep the possibility of a bikini blunder! Tiely Araujo is a licensed paramedical skin care specialist. Ashwagandha in the Spa A Supplemental Powerhouse for Radiant Skin by Aurora Solis

june2017

LNEonline.com

o&w ashwagandha in the spa

Ashwagandha is one of the most revered plants in Ayurvedic medicine. Native to the Asian countries of India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, it has been used for health purposes for more than 3,000 years. Ayurveda classifies ashwagandha as a “Rasayana” herb, or an elixir that works to increase human health and longevity. The reverence for this wonder herb is well deserved, as it is packed with health properties that enhance both well-being and skin radiance. The antioxidants, choline, fatty acids and amino acids found in ashwagandha earn it a reputation as both a powerful nutritional supplement and a potent topical remedy.

SUPPLEMENTAL POWERHOUSE Historically, ashwagandha was ground into a fine powder and mixed with milk and honey to make an herbal tea. Today, ashwagandha powder can be incorporated as a nutritional supplement in the form of tea, in addition to more modern delights such as smoothies and juices, served up in the spa as a refreshing complement to topical treatments.

Beauty begins from within, and ashwagandha provides an abundance of nutritional properties that ultimately deliver a boost of radiance: Enhances Sleep Studies have demonstrated ashwagandha’s effectiveness in the management of sleep loss and associated oxidative stress, which produces an imbalance between the production of free radicals and the ability of the body to counteract their harmful effects. Deep sleep is essential to many skin health functions such as repair of damaged cells and restoration of collagen, elasticity and moisture.

Reduces Cortisol Levels Ashwagandha consumption significantly decreases cortisol, the body’s stress hormone. Cortisol is known to contribute to numerous skin issues such as wrinkles, dryness, overactive oil production and even redness. Controls Blood Sugar Ashwagandha can help control blood sugar, which is beneficial for those with Type 2 diabetes. Better blood sugar also serves to improve memory and reaction times. In addition, controlled blood sugar indirectly helps with cortisol management and its associated skin problems. Stimulates Collagen Production Ashwagandha consumption helps increase estrogen and DHEA levels in the body via steroidal compounds. These properties help stimulate production of collagen as well as the skin’s natural oils.

TOPICAL TREASURE As with most supplemental elements that deliver radiance from within, ashwagandha can pack a powerful beauty punch when applied in topical treatments. Incorporate this ingredient into your client services and home care recommendations for the following benefits:

Wound Healing The leaves of ashwagandha plants work to relieve skin sores, reduce swelling and effectively heal wounds. Treats Coarse, Dry Skin Ashwaghanda intake can be used to directly treat the skin from within! Ayurvedic medical practitioners prescribe intake of ashwaganda to treat keratitis, a skin condition characterized by dry, rough skin. Fights Infection The abundant antibacterial and antifungal properties found in ashwaganda root provide protection against and treatment for infection, particularly fungal infections in the top layer of skin, the stratum corneum. Scalp Saver The anti-inflammatory properties of ashwagandha are useful for treating scalp conditions like dandruff, scalp psoriasis and eczema. Give your supplemental and topical treatments a boost with the extraordinary properties of ashwagandha, and treat your clients to the beautifying benefits of this renowned historic herb! 

Antioxidant Power Ashwagandha is packed with antioxidants that fight free radicals, helping to reduce cellular stress and its inflammatory responses. This works against the development of unsightly wrinkles, dark spots, fine lines and blemishes. Clears Pores Unique flavonoid compounds in ashwaganda, called withanolides, help cleanse dirt and impurities, inhibiting the clogging of pores.

Drawing the line on stress and anxiety by Kristina Mazzenga Clients look to you as their wellness resource, and more than likely, they book treatments to minimize the effects of stress. Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy in which clients, facilitated by an art therapist, use the creative process to reconcile emotional conflicts, foster self-awareness, manage behavior and addictions, develop social skills, reduce anxiety and increase selfesteem. The intention of art therapy is to improve or restore a client’s overall functioning sense of well-being through visual art such as painting, coloring and collaging, as well as other forms of art.

o&w art therapy in the spa

Art therapy isn’t new — it’s been used for hundreds of years but wasn’t actually formalized until the twentieth century. It is now a facet to the spa and skin care industry because of its ability to showcase to clients a unique form of meditation that is expressive and mindful to the body’s spirit.

WHAT IS AN ART THERAPIST? The role of an art therapist is to not only facilitate an art therapy session, but to provide a springboard for clients to articulate their feelings, fears, thoughts and insights in a supportive healing environment. Taking on the role of an art therapist requires an accumulation of art materials for clients as well as the confidence to act not only as a witness, but also as an aid in the process of each participant’s growth. An art therapy degree requires the completion a two year graduate-level program with educational requirements including theories of art therapy, counseling and psychotherapy; ethics and standards of practice; individual group and family art therapy techniques; human and creative development; multicultural issues; and internship experiences in both clinical and community settings.

WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM ART THERAPY? The versatility and customization ability of art therapy makes it accessible to a wide variety of different people. This special style of therapy guides those involved to look at their troubles in a different light and can help tap into emotions that have been previously buried. Many people have expressed

that with art therapy, they feel as if they have a greater sense of control and choice when compared to traditional forms of mental and emotional therapy. Art therapy can be particularly beneficial to those with mental health problems, learning difficulties, dementia, and chronic and terminal illness due to its ability to improve awareness, clarity, balance, motivation, strength, discipline and pain.

MODES OF ART THERAPY Painting on a canvas Putting paint to paper is one of the purest forms of art and allows the participant an immense amount of freedom, but can also be very intimidating for those who have a hard time expressing themselves.

If you hear a voice within you say you cannot paint, then by all means paint and that voice will be silenced.” -Vincent Van Gogh

With appropriate direction from an art therapist, a client can be steered into using bright, vivid colors or muted, dark colors to help represent what they are trying to convey. Jennica Klemann, owner of Spa Daze in Tuscan, Ariz., offers this specific type of art therapy in her spa and states on the topic, “Most of my clients come in unsure or critical of their artistic abilities. My art therapist and I reaffirm to each of these clients that the experi-

ence we offer is not about the outcome of the art, but about the emotions that the art allows you to express.” Art therapist at Spa Daze and owner of Arte Bella Painting, Jen Christiansen, states, “The clients come in and sit down at tables that have everything they need to begin their art. I express to them that what they are putting together is a puzzle. I remind them often throughout the session that there are no mistakes in art, just happy accidents.”

Spa Daze offers these open-to-thepublic art therapy sessions the second Saturday of every month for approximately two hours ($40), depending on the theme of the session and how social the group is. “We have had teens 12 and up, but typically our main demographic are groups of females ages 21 to 65,” Klemann mentions, “Last year we added a second event each month because our classes were too full.” The spa promotes their art therapy sessions

on Facebook, sharing posts generated by the art therapist. Christiansen encourages clients to modify the themes of her classes, “Ultimately, they can paint whatever they want," she says. "The most unique part about these classes is that I give basic, step-by-step instructions, but inevitably clients end up each drawing something unique to them.” Spa Daze’s intent with offering art classes in their spa is to allow people to explore resources for stress reduction other than our typical “hands on” treatments. “Clients are able to unwind with friends and make new ones for a few hours. Socialization and creativity decrease depression by releasing endorphins and serotonin… It’s an overall positive experience!” Klemann states.

Collaging is a simple activity meant to help clients make sense of their inner thoughts and feelings. Cutting out pictures or words and sticking them onto a collage board can offer a safe form of expression that offers control and structure for someone who is not familiar working with art materials. Comer Rudd-Gates, registered art therapist at Essex Wellness Center in Essex Village, Conn., and licensed professional counselor for more than 25 years, comments on this specific method of art therapy, “Collaging is a safe and structured approach in which one can select images and/or words and overlap them, giving the client a chance to showcase how they feel and what they are most passionate about through the images and words they select.” Rudd-Gates offers individual collaging sessions varying from 60 to 120 minutes ($125-$200), depending on the needs of the individual. Essex Wellness Center promotes both RuddGates and the art therapy program on their website and reports only positive feedback from participating clients.

Coloring with crayons has proven to be a successful mode of art therapy because of its ability to create unique effects with a large variety of easily accessible colors. Crayons have the tendency to instill happy memories in clients because they often represent experiences from childhood.

Spa Serenity in Baraboo, Wisc., offers a very casual, but unique approach to art therapy in their spa. The spa offers a variety of coloring options in their peaceful relaxation area for guests to explore at their own leisure while they wait for their services. The idea came from Spa Serenity’s facilities manager and resident artist, Anna Krause, who believes art therapy is “a great way to help guests decompress and separate themselves from the business of their everyday life.” Spa owner Lacey Steffes agrees and adds, “We encourage guests to put their phones away and create something beautiful or add to a page that a prior guest has started. The pages evolve into a form of community art. It’s not uncommon for several guests of all ages to work together to complete one design.” The art therapy program at Spa Serenity is free, available to clients as the spa is open and targets the general demographic of the spa. The spa staff encourages clients to color in one of the many coloring books they have available as a means of escape from not only technology, but also from their daily stresses, muscle aches and pains. This technique helps to relax clients’ minds prior to their spa treatments. Krause works part time with the spa and visits periodically to maintain the art supply in the spa as well as add new trends and developments to the art program. The spa utilizes social media as an outlet for promoting their art therapy program and also highlights the program on their website as part of their total spa experience.

IMPLEMENT ART THERAPY INTO YOUR SPA Art therapy’s alignment with the mission of a spa is due to their simultaneous focus on holistic healing. Taking the risk of adding art therapy to your spa not only sets you apart from the competition, it also allows you to create an atmosphere that makes it easier for your clients to focus on introspection and exploration of their mind, body and spirit. Here is a list of all materials you’ll need to get started: • Blank canvases • Tables/chairs • Aprons • Paints • Water brushes • Markers • Pencils/colored pencils • Crayons • Various sizes and colors of paper, clay, feathers and magazines A room suitable for the use of art therapy sessions should be soundproofed with storage for both materials and completed artwork. (Keep in mind that this space should be one that is allowed to get a little messy!) All art

therapy records and artwork should be stored safely in a drawer or cabinet to ensure the confidentiality and trust of clients. Seeking out an art therapist is the next step! Consider connecting with local schools that offer art therapy programs to find an art therapist suitable for your spa. Both the American Art Therapy Association (ATTA) and the British Columbia Art Therapy Association (BCATA) also have an online directory of art therapists to make it easily accessible for you to find an art therapist in your specific region. Contemplate bringing an art therapist on board in your spa first as a freelancer or part time. Start with one day per month for art therapy sessions and as you see fit, get ready to grow and expand your art therapy program! 

EXPERT ADVICE

FOR BEAUTY

PROFESSIONALS A one-woman makeup show with

Amanda Banghart, co-owner, esthetician and makeup artist at Spa De Da in Lincoln, Neb.

92

june2017

LNEonline.com

What is the best part about working with makeup in the spa industry? I get to be creative! I love being able to work outside the box and show someone how they can easily enhance their natural beauty with just a few products. I overall enjoy making women feel more confident about how they look! When did you decide to implement makeup services into your spa menu? I decided once I graduated and started to work on my own that I wanted to learn how to do airbrush makeup. There were only a handful of artists in Nebraska offering airbrush makeup at the time and luckily many brides were willing to take a chance on me and let me use them to build my portfolio. What approaches did you take to implement these services? In order to get the ball rolling with makeup on my menu I offered really good discounts to brides and also worked with family and friends who let me take photographs of them for my portfolio.

Which of your makeup services is the most popular? My most popular makeup services are my airbrush bridal makeup and my lash lifting and tinting services. I was one of the first people in Nebraska to offer these services and for the last year our success has been phenomenal. Lash lifting and tinting is a great and easy service that is really profitable! It only takes about 45 minutes per client and the results are immediate and dramatic. It truly is a game changer in the beauty industry.

MAKEUP AREA Describe your makeup area. When we originally signed the lease on our space it was a car wash! We converted the three bays of the car wash into three different suites. My makeup area is located inside the room where I also perform esthetic services. I set up all my makeup supplies and equipment at the back of the room where I have access to two large windows. Natural light is a must! On gloomy days I make sure to set up my glamour light. My esthetician/makeup room is actually half of the whole spa so I am fortunate enough to have a large space.

TEAM MEMBERS How do you select your makeup artists? I am a one-woman show when it comes to makeup artistry in my spa. I occasionally hire independent makeup artists to join me during wedding season. What specific qualities do you look for when bringing a makeup artist on board? When hiring makeup artists I really focus on how punctual they are. They can execute a flawless, fierce contour, but if they can’t show up on time and ready to go then none of that matters to me. Personality is also very important! I need to know that our clients can be comfortable talking to our makeup

artists about any concerns they may have. Finally, they must be confident! If you don’t believe in yourself, you can’t expect anyone else to either. How do you keep members of your staff incentivized? An incentive I offer my makeup artists is a guaranteed 20 percent tip of the total amount they earned while doing makeup. That may seem like a no brainer to some makeup artists, but in the Midwest we don’t always get tipped. I also provide mileage pay if my makeup artists are traveling from out of town.

MARKETING How do you promote your makeup services? I promote my services on Facebook, my website and by using a few online advertising companies. Because I have been doing makeup for awhile now, word of mouth is also a great method of promotion for me! I am sure to talk to each of my clients about our other services that may interest them after each appointment. To promote my services directly in the spa, I hang up flyers to showcase our makeup services that not all of our clients may know about.

INSIDER TIPS What trends are you currently seeing in the industry? Eyebrows and eyelashes are really in right now! Most of my brides are going for a softer romantic feel, which I think is timeless. I have also noticed people are starting to be more experimental with trying bold lip colors. How do you perform consultations? I make sure to set a few minutes aside to perform consultations prior to each of my appointments. I ask my clients to bring in pictures of ideas they may have and we discuss what is best for them from there.

Do you have rituals or methods of creating positive energy in your spa? I think in order to exude a positive energy into the spa, you must be the main source of the positivity. No matter what is going on in your personal life you must make that environment and experience amazing for each and every client. If you are distracted it can be very obvious and off-putting. What does your business do that is UNIQUE from the competition? I pride myself on spacing my clients out so nobody ever has to wait in the reception area for me. I also make it a point to remember key things about each of my clients, which makes them feel more comfortable and connected. What advice would you pass along to other spa owners or those just starting to offer makeup services in their spa? My advice to anyone wanting to offer something new is to just do it! You will never know until you try. Also, it is a must to make sure everyone is properly trained for the service they provide and to follow the laws in your particular state. Overall, I see so many people that don’t have enough confidence in themselves to try new things, but how will you ever be great at something if you don’t first give it a try?

image glitter lips

S

crolling through social media, it’s hard to miss the latest lip trend sparkling all over everyone’s favorite pages: Glitter lips! This technique is rapidly gaining popularity thanks to numerous beauty influencers. Rocking a bold, glittery lip may sound outrageous to some, but to others it is a streamlined statement — just a swipe of sparkle against clean skin, and makeup is complete! There are many ways to wear a glitter lip, from chunky disco ball glitter to a subtle shimmer. Here are some exciting ways to achieve this trend and make it your own signature treatment.

Prep Exfoliate and condition lips prior to any glitter application with a scrub and lip plumper. This creates a smooth canvas and allows the products to deliver long-lasting wear. A brown sugar scrub gently whisks away any pesky dead skin cells, while a plumper or balm made with nourishing ingredients like shea butter moisturizes and hydrates the lips.

APPLICATION Now, time to get glittery! It will require some practice to keep this look neat and under control.

that your adhesive of choice is safe to ingest and won’t dry out or cause irritation to the lip area. A lip-safe alternative to conventional adhesive is a clear lip gloss or a gloss similar to your client’s lip color of choice. • Once the adhesive is evenly applied, hold a tissue under the bottom lip, as though to line it. Begin to apply the glitter above the tissue barrier by gently pressing the glitter into the lip. Use the tissue to catch any fall out and save your client from a chin full of glitter. • Once you have pressed glitter all over the lips, gently blow over the tops of the lips to remove any excess. Voila, glitter lips!

especially daring, add a touch of the same glitter to the center of the eyelids to create a fun flash of light every time she blinks!

For a more subtle look:

Maintenance

• If the previous technique is intimidating for your client, another option is to create more of a shimmer, rather than using chunky glitter. • Start off with the desired lip liner and lipstick to fill the lips with color. Then select a shimmery or iridescent eyeshadow, or an eyeshadow with glitter in it. Using a small eye shadow or lip brush, gently sweep the shadow over the lips, or simply press into the center of the lips to create a central pop of shimmer and color.

Advise your clients that while they are sporting the glitter lips look, they must practice caution when eating and drinking. Using a straw is a must! It is likely to require some touch ups throughout the day or night. Help your client take the perfect selfie before leaving your chair, and send them out with the gloss and glitter used in the application. Glitter is fun, so let it go with this trend! From the runway to everyday to a girls’ night out, step outside your comfort zone and encourage clients to do the same. 

For an avant-garde, full glitter lips look: • Begin by color blocking the lips. Select your base color of choice. With glitter lips, you can go for creamy pink neutrals, as seen recently on Fendi runways, all the way to bold shades like deep berry, red or plum. • The next essential step is to create an adhesive on the lips to prepare for loose glitter application. There are many options for this, including glitter primers and glitter glues. Make sure

• Top with clear gloss to add to the shine and create a longer lasting shimmer. For an even easier play on the glitter lip trend, simply apply a lip gloss that has a high glitter content. A clear gloss with visible glitter in it looks amazing on every color and even on its own! Whichever version of glitter lips you choose to create, keep the rest of the makeup generally subtle and soft. A glitter lip is a major focal point, so let the lips do the talking! If your client is
