POST-SUMMER SKIN DAMAGE HOW TO ADDRESS CLIENTS’ POST-SUMMER SKIN ISSUES by Carrie Borzillo

You can advise your clients to lather themselves head-to-toe in sunscreen all you want, but inevitably they're likely to get a bit too much sun this summer. Help your clients heal their over-exposed skin after a summer of indulgence with services that treat issues such as mild sunburn, sunspots, hyperpigmentation and dehydration. Here are five treatments perfect for addressing your clients' post-summer skin damage.

skin post-summer skin damage

24-'HEAVEN' Bliss Spa at W Los Angeles offers their 24-'heaven' (60 minutes, $155) treatment, aimed to replenish, deeply hydrate and heal irritated or sunburned skin. It's not only good for post-summer skin damage, but for clients seeking relief from eczema and psoriasis as well. "Sun damage is one of the top causes of early aging. Overexposure can result in hyperpigmentation and early signs of aging, such as wrinkles, loose skin, and in some instances skin disease. This treatment combats those issues," says spa director Joshua Tims. The treatment features a custommade soothing mask of oatmeal, tea, honey, milk and the spa's own healing body balm, which is applied to the entire body. A scalp massage or hair treatment follows, and the service concludes with a Vichy shower with one of the spa's body wash scents and application of their moisturizer. "The oatmeal, tea and honey are calming, while the milk and healing 14

balm contain lactic acid, which gently exfoliates the skin,” says Tims. “For those with recent sun exposure, we do a body temperature wrap and for those who need deeper hydration, we do a warm wrap. It's okay for someone who has a slight first-degree burn, but if they have a fever or blisters, we cannot perform this treatment.”

CORAL CALM SOOTHING FACIAL While the Coral Calm Soothing Facial (60 minutes, $145) at Ocean Spa at Playa Largo Resort & Spa in Key Largo, Fla., can benefit any skin type, it's especially designed for those with sensitive skin conditions including sunburn, environmentally stressed skin (such as windburn from summer sailing) and rosacea. "The products used in this facial come from a sensitive skin care line, which is infused with a combination

of marine and active ingredients to combat dehydration, which is the cornerstone of all skin issues,” says spa director Gretta Bequer-Ramirez. “The key ingredients are specifically chosen to re-establish normal skin sensitivity levels by reducing excess heat stored in the skin after sun exposure." A few of the key ingredients are jania rubens, which is an ultra-moisturizing and re-mineralizing red marine coral used not only to soothe sensitive skin but more importantly to hydrate and nourish with trace minerals. Another key ingredient is coralline officinalis, a red coral rich in magnesium, iron and zinc. "This soothes and calms inflammation and strengthens the skin's defense capacities to restore normal tolerance levels," says Bequer-Ramirez. The serum also contains pikea robusta and golden chamomile, which not only soothes the skin, but also reduces redness and protects the skin from harsh external factors.

SENSITIVE SKIN/ TOO MUCH SUN FACIAL Because the Seaside, Florida-based Beach Ready Spa is set in a tourist hot spot in the Gulf of Mexico, they frequently see guests seeking relief from overexposure to the sun or wind, making their Sensitive Skin/Too Much Sun Facial (50 minutes, $125) a must-have for their facial menu. "It's a wonderful facial for guests to experience at the end of their vacation after a week in the sun to render the skin smooth, soothed and healthy,” says lead esthetician Lindsay Eberhart. “We incorporate local, aloe-based products to leave the skin clean, refreshed and calm." This treatment includes a skin analysis, customized gentle cleansing with lavender hydro-essential, raspberry fruit and vitamin B5. If appropriate, a gentle exfoliation with a rice enzyme based product is used. "A generous application of our locally-made soothing gel with aloe and evening primrose oil is penetrated into the skin with our signature chilled Tiger Clam shells,” she says. “A phytonutrient humectant gel mask deeply moisturizes and draws moisture into the skin. This is topped with an oatmeal mask, which helps boost the immune function of irritated, stressed skin. We finish with botanical hydrators, a barrier-repairing shield, and, of course, sunscreen to protect from future exposure."

ORGANIC SUN TAMER Kim Knapp, owner of Skin Apeel Day Spa in Boca Raton, Fla., says she added the Organic Sun Tamer (60 minutes, $125) to their menu this year because their year-round sunny location "makes this sun taming service essential to our clients’ comfort and well-being." "Organic Sun Tamer is a fast soothing solution to remedy over exposed sun-kissed skin,” says Knapp. “This

This recovery-based service helps defer free radical damage, hopefully minimizing after-sun repercussions such as loss of elasticity and/or hyperpigmentation." The service, which can be administered as a facial or body treatment, kicks off with a cool aromatic chamomile and lavender-infused towels used to gently compress conditioned water into the skin. This immediately cools and tames sun-heated skin. The client is then painted with a rich mineral-based green tea body mask chock full of nature's minerals to support healthy healing and skin elasticity. While the mask performs, the client has the option of an express scalp or foot massage. The service ends with a generous dose of an agave, sunflower and aloe radical repair recipe. "In addition to offering flash sun repair, a guest may reserve to benefit from deep hydration, improved texture and to reduce an inflammatory condition (dermatitis, psoriasis, eczema or allergic reaction)," adds Knapp.

simmon, which help to combat the effects of sun on the skin. Star fruit (a.k.a., carambola) is full of several B vitamins (i.e., thiamine, riboflavin, and niacin, among others) and minerals including magnesium, calcium and iron, while persimmons' zeaxanthin and betulinic acid do their part in fighting off sun damage. "While antioxidants like vitamin A and C protect your skin from the damaging effects of sun and protect DNA, vitamin B in star fruit (such as thiamine, riboflavin, niacin) and minerals like magnesium give the skin a boost of energy and combat signs of aging," explains owner Elizabeth Adam. Meanwhile the zeaxanthin, a carotenoid, found in persimmon provides a light-filtering function while a soothing effect of salmon oil (packed with omega 3s) decreases inflammation. "The skin feels refreshed, firm, and is protected from the sun. And, the betulinic acid present in persimmon helps to combat cancer as well," explains Adam. 

WHAT CAN AMINO ACIDS DO FOR THE SKIN? DISCOVER HOW AMINO ACIDS ARE KEY TO HEALTHY AND YOUTHFUL SKIN by Ben Johnson, M.D.

Amino acids are the building blocks of the skin, the human body and biological processes, so it’s no surprise that their role in the repair and rejuvenation of sun damage, acne, chemical peels and lasers is critical. Equally as important is the development of a strategy to increase their presence daily so that maintenance of a youthful appearance is more possible. Estheticians and physicians have the difficult task of deciding which peptides (combinations of amino acids), protein supplements (including collagen, an amino acid chain) and growth factors (complex amino acid chains) are most effective for skin health.

skin what can amino acids do for the skin?

Say you saw it in LNE & Spa and circle #248 on reader service card

First, let’s take a look at the most important amino acids in terms of skin health. The following partial list includes amino acids in their order of importance based on quantities found in human skin: lycine, proline, alanine, hydroxyproline, glutamic acid, arginine, aspartic acid, serine, lysine, leucine, threonine and phenylalanine. Collagen is made of (hydroxy) proline, lysine and glycine. Elastin uses the same group with the addition of valine and alanine. As with any protein combination, the secret to connecting amino acids is making them “sticky” so they can bond to each other through a process called hydroxylation. The main players in making hydroxyproline and the other modified amino acids is vitamin C and glutathione because it continuously restores the ascorbic acid after it oxidizes in the hydroxylation process. The skin is constantly utilizing amino acids for the maintenance and repair process by building essential proteins that go on to form the infrastructure of the skin. Proteins like fibrillin and tropoelastin are essential to making elastin. Collagen relies on tropocollagen as its building block and fibronectin and integrin for its transport. These larger molecules are comprised of several hundred amino acids

The skin is constantly utilizing amino acids for the maintenance and repair process. perfectly combined to operate within the complex network that is the skin’s immune system. It must be emphasized that the skin has jaw-dropping levels of complexity that are sensitive to shortages as well as excesses of particular substances/messengers in both maintenance and repair modes. Every year of one’s adult life the skin’s circulation declines by about one percent. By the age of 50, approximately 25 percent less nutrition is being delivered to the skin, which impacts how much repair collagen/elastin production is possible. Additionally, the shortage includes the critical protein messengers and building blocks that keep things operating at a high level. The solution to that is not burning, exfoliating or damaging the skin further (which logically leads to more scarcity), but rather to feed the skin with the needed amino acids and proteins that have become short in supply with age. The future of skin care relies on new innovations that restore lost nutrient delivery so the skin can operate at its most efficient levels. This is how permanent age reversal is possible, restoring immune function to youthful levels. One of the benefits of niacinamide is its vasodilation effect where it increases the food delivery, including amino acids, to the skin. Substances like VEGF Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) and Hepatocyte Growth Factor (HGF) increase new blood vessel formation, which helps create even more rejuvenation capacity. Amino acids in skin care products can go a long way toward accelerating the production of key proteins in the skin. Ideally, all three methods are used to achieve the greatest result. Topical use of amino acids is beneficial primarily because they have an average molecular weight of 110 Daltons, which is well under the 500 Dalton rule. This is a guide for formulators that essentially posits that molecules above 500 Daltons have a much harder time penetrating into the skin. A highly effective approach in formulations is zinc finger technology, which utilizes individual amino acids in combination with ascorbic acid and minerals to activate dramatic changes to the skin including DNA and scar tissue repair. This can be differentiated from the long list of peptides that struggle

skin what can amino acids do for the skin?

Amino acids are essential to skin health and their presence does shrink with age. to penetrate into the skin, because in most cases they far exceed 500 Daltons. Growth factors are in short supply as we age. They contain thousands of amino acids in each molecule. Logically it can be assumed that a shortage of amino acids results in the production of fewer growth factors. Creating new blood vessel formation is one part of their impact, but they are also moderating collagen/elastin production, wound repair and most of the activities of the skin’s immune system. A recent, remarkable improvement in growth factor production using human stem cells and fibroblasts has now become available. With patent-pending methods of encouraging the most production out of

20

August2017

LNEonline.com

these pluripotent cells, we can now see a 350 percent increase in critical skin proteins like fibrillin, fibronectin, tropocollagen and tropoelastin amongst 600 other identified proteins. This is particularly exciting considering that to date, most of these proteins were not available. Even topical collagen is animal-derived and irradiated its largest form so penetration is impossible. Using stem cells allows us to access the most bioavailable human form of collagen and key proteins. In conclusion, amino acids are essential to skin health and their presence does shrink with age. Replenishing them with topical products is very beneficial to the skin. Amino acids in pep-

tide chains do not fare as well because their size prevents them from reaching the deeper layers of skin. By providing individual amino acids, skin is allowed to make the peptides it needs. Anything that can assist the skin in increasing circulation — whether it is niacinamide or growth factors — is going to improve amino acid delivery along with increasing repair and rejuvenation due to the increased new blood cell formation. 

Signature Treatments Since the spa’s renovation and grand opening this past March, new signature treatments combine an ideal mix of botanical herbs, rich sea minerals and essential oils that celebrate the vibrant Latin heritage of Miami. The spa’s Rhythm Massage is an energizing full body massage set to the rhythms of salsa, Flamenco and Spanish guitar that uses mojito or piña colada scented oils for a full sensory experience. The spa’s most popular treatment, however, is their Ultimate Body Experience (100 minutes, $295). This all-in-one full body treatment begins with an invigorating dry brush to increase lymphatic flow. The marine mud wrap consists of a vitamin and mineral-rich blend of volcanic muds and green clay from around the world, while the algae gel contains chlorella vulgaris extract, velvet horn, algae extract and spring sea water. While the client is cocooned in these warm, hydrating wraps, they receive a customized scalp massage with scalp mud, which is ideal for dry scalps, psoriasis and overall hydration due to its apricot kernel oil and red and white clay. After a quick rinse with the spa’s shower, the client then receives the finishing touch of a full body massage with their choice of the Relax and Soothe Oil, made of lavender and sweet or-

Team Incentivizing The management team at The Spa at Ritz-Carlton, South Beach is constantly preparing and motivating their staff for success. Spa Director Brandon Claypool holds two daily lineups for his spa staff — one in the morning and one in the afternoon. He mentions, “These brief 15-minute meetings help us as a team prepare ourselves for the remainder of the day. We encourage excitement within each other as we focus on the best possible ways to deliver nothing but the best services to our clients.”

Marketing & Special Events

Staff performance is reviewed on a constant basis. Claypool sets daily, monthly and yearly goals for his staff, as he is always motivating them to learn and grow both personally and professionally. To keep his employees constantly prompted and inspired, Claypool changes his employees’ incentives every few months. “Every one of my employees is motivated by something different, so we have to change it up regularly to keep everyone engaged and incentivized,” he comments. “When an employee’s goals are achieved, we celebrate both individually and as a team.” Employees are rewarded, for example, with dinners for two, spa treatments and retail credit.

To celebrate the spa’s recent grand opening after renovation, the staff at The Spa at Ritz-Carlton, South Beach performed a special sage-smudging ceremony to cleanse and purify the spa of its past and welcome in new, fresh energy. From its grand opening in March until this past June, guests were able to book some of the spa’s new packages, including overnight accommodations and top-notch customer service for a discounted price. Throughout previous years, The Ritz-Carlton, South Beach has hosted several other special and private event experiences for their in-house guests as well as for locals. Some of their special events include open houses, trunk shows with retail vendors and wellness days. The spa management and staff create special spa packages on a normal basis, based on the particular holiday or season. These packages are typically created months in advance and launch approximately three to six weeks before the specific event. The spa shares recent news regarding their latest offerings and spa treatments via their Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts, as well as on the official Ritz-Carlton, South Beach website. The spa is also in the process of generating a loyalty program, which encourages clients to return to the spa based on their specific treatment needs and desires. To ensure the spa receives the most out of its marketing techniques, the management staff evaluates promotions and events from the past and determines their level of success based mainly on attendance and revenue.

mine their needs and ensure the lines reflect what is in the most demand. In addition, the spa also considers efficiency of the products, packaging and presentation. Rather than incentivizing their clients to purchase their retail products with discounts and specials, the staff focuses on educating their clients about the product. Claypool mentions, “The goal is to have an informed guest and have them take retail home to re-live our spa experience in between their visits with us.” The Ritz-Carlton, South Beach staff is well versed in their product knowledge for all brands carried within the spa. “This allows them to assist and educate our guests to ensure they are choosing the correct retail option for their specific needs,” Claypool states. The spa also utilizes printed flyers inside the spa to highlight specific products and lines.

O

ur hands reveal a lot –– oftentimes too much. Despite our best attempts to keep the skin healthy, the hands tend to make us appear older than we actually are. Over time, collagen deteriorates, hyperpigmentation occurs, and the texture becomes coarser. Why does this occur? Constant exposure to environmental aggressors, UV rays, detergents, water and being in constant use makes our hands more vulnerable to thin, wrinkly skin, dryness and age spots –– all the visual signs of aging. While clients may be using hand cream or getting regular manicures, the fact is that hands need daily support and rejuvenating treatments, just as the face does. With the right blend of treatment room remedies and home care, esthetic professionals can help clients restore their hands’ youthfulness.

Pro-youth ingredients and treatments Bringing the skin on the hands back to optimum health starts with the right ingredients. Using science and nature, it is possible to actively restore and reform youthful skin tissue by stimulating collagen production and cell turnover, brightening skin tone, smoothing coarse texture and rehydrating the skin. Luckily, many of the ingredients that have proven effective for the face work for the hands. The following list includes a few among many: DAISY FLOWER (bellis perennis) EXTRACT. A gentle, natural skin lightener, daisy flower influences different pathways involved in melanin formation, counteracting age spots and balancing hyperpigmentation. TOCO P H E R O L ( D - a l p h a ) . T h i s f a t - s o l u b l e form of vitamin E protects against lipid peroxidation and cell damage, improves cellular respiration and supports mitochondrial functions. CASTICIN (vitex agnus castus) EXTRACT. A phytoendorphin complex from monk’s pepper, this ingredient plays an important role in healing skin tissue, reducing inflammation and supporting an overall radiant glow.

PEPTIDES. These chains of amino acids are active in very small doses, stimulating fibroblasts and signaling the skin to produce more protein — firming, toning and diminishing fine lines. Notable peptides include palmitoyl tripeptide-5, palmitoyl hexapeptide-14, palmitoyl oligopeptide and palmitoyl tripeptide-38. EPIDERMAL GROWTH FACTORS (EGFs). An oligopeptide and vital protein, EGF stimulates collagen production, cell renewal, circulation and the formation of new blood vessels. They also assist in wound healing and reducing wrinkles. SHEA BUTTER. Alleviates roughness and uneven patches while assisting with collagen production. Rich in vitamins A, D and E, as well as lecithin and squalene, which promotes antioxidant activity and normalization of lipid barrier. VITAMIN A. Increases the rate of cell turnover and collagen production, reduces wrinkles, smoothes s k i n t e x t u re , i m p ro v e s c i rc u l a tion and normalizes kertinization. It also repairs UVA damaged skin. ORGANIC STEM CELLS. Powerful in skin rejuvenation, plant cell cultures support the rebuilding of damaged tissues, increasing antioxidant activity and preserving lipids. Of course, selecting the right ingredients depends on each client’s skin and goals. With a customized approach to utilizing these ingredients as well as techniques in the treatment room, you can help clients remedy various challenges.

CHALLENGE: Wrinkles and crepey skin A treatment aimed at correcting and rebuilding the skin helps improve texture and stimulate cell proliferation. Start with a pumpkin or L-lactic- and pineapple-based cleanser to remove surface lipids and stimulate rejuvenation. 32

Follow this with two acid applications, including a mask applied between the two. The first acid, an L-lactic acid, is brushed on and allowed to absorb for five minutes. This remains on the skin. A thin layer of a clay- and cactus-based mask to exfoliate and purify the skin is applied and worked into the skin for five minutes. Rinse thoroughly before applying the second acid containing a blend of salicylic, L-lactic, linoleic and oleic acids along with retinol. This supports tissue repair from photo-aging and skin deterioration. A heated compress may be applied for several minutes to further infuse the acid into the skin. To finish, work a combination of peptides, epidermal growth factors, goji berries and coffee extracts into the skin to replenish and stimulate the tissue. If it is daytime, apply a mineral-based SPF. Hands will be supple, luminous and youthful looking. Client may return every four to six months for this treatment. Approximate duration: 25 - 30 minutes Suggested cost: $45 - $75 Microdermabrasion is still one of the most popular, non-invasive modalities for rejuvenating the skin –– and it works well for the hands. To support its rejuvenating effects, enzymes and acids may be used before or after treatment, depending on desired results. Used prior to, they aid in loosening the cells of the stratum corneum to complete the lifting process, and more effectively

smooth and polish the skin. Using them after helps lift any cells that still adhere, prompting the enzyme or acid to work harder and enhance the rejuvenation. To enhance the regenerating effects of microdermabrasion, start by cleansing with an L-lactic and pineapple-based cleanser, perform the microdermabrasion and then follow with a hydrating, nutrient-rich mask containing milk proteins and grape seed extracts. Finish with a hydrating serum and a mineralbased SPF. Skin will be smooth, polished and rejuvenated. This may be performed every four to six months. Approximate duration: With an enzyme or peel, 25 minutes Suggested cost: $65 - $95

CHALLENGE: Skin in need of healing and repair. A light corrective treatment infused with wound-healing and antiinflammatory ingredients brings the skin back to optimum health. Start with an L-lactic- and pineapple-based cleanser and a bamboo scrub to prepare the skin. After rinsing, spray the skin with an energizing peptide formula and perform light tapotement to work ingredients into the skin. Blend an AHA-based enzyme formula with an age-reversal complex of EGF, organic stem cell, peptides and retinol to stimulate rejuvenation. Strengthen with a massage oil of omega 6 essential fatty acids, grapeseed oil and other essential oils, which further works the

spa hand rejuvenation enzyme mixture into the skin. Apply hot compresses to the skin for 10 to 15 minutes. Finish with a nurturing serum containing EGF, D-alpha tocopherol and soothing essential oils, along with the phyto-endorphin complex. Hands will be smooth, supple and buoyant. Clients may return every two to three months for this treatment. Approximate duration: 25 - 30 minutes Suggested cost: $45 - $75 Another highly effective procedure for clients needing additional healing, repair and firming is a combination LED (light emitting diodes) light therapy with a corrective treatment. The light intensifies the nutrients and corrective properties of certain ingredients to actively restore the skin to its youthful state. For instance, using LED along with mandelic acid boosts the firming, toning and rejuvenating benefits. LED also enhances the hydrating properties of ingredients like amino acids, hyaluronic acid, peptides and tocopherols, and helps heal the skin from the inside out. This may be performed every four to six months. Approximate duration: With an enzyme or peel, 25 - 30 minutes Suggested cost: $45 - $75

CHALLENGE: Age spots and hyperpigmentation. Whether from smoking or overexposure to the sun, a corrective treatment focused on respiration, rejuvenation and brightening helps diminish yellow discoloration and age spots. Start with a skin-brightening cleanser with natural daisy flower to cleanse and assist in the suppression of melanin. Next, a brightening enzyme with ingredients like salicylic acid, kojic acid and azelaic acid inhibits melanin synthesis, provides anti-inflammatory support and reduces pigmentation. Allow to sit for approximately five minutes, then rinse thoroughly and pat dry. Next, apply a blend of mandelic acid and vitamin C to rejuvenate and deliver antioxidant support. Finish with a min34

eral-based SPF. The final result is skin that is glowing, smooth and hydrated. Depending on the severity of the discoloration, clients may return in four to six weeks for a follow-up treatment. Approximate duration: 25 - 30 minutes Suggested cost: $30 - $50 IPL (intense pulse light), Fraxel or Pixel laser procedures are also great for lightening and resurfacing. To help support the skin in rebuilding and strengthening, consider pairing this treatment with growth factors or omega 6 fatty acids. This may be done every six to seven months. Approximate duration: With an enzyme or light peel, 30 - 45 minutes Cost will vary.

Hand-crafted home care Home care plans depend on individual skin goals as well as what the professional treatments received. For instance, following any resurfacing treatment, it is important to nourish, soothe, hydrate and strengthen the skin. For daily support, an age-diminishing hand cream with ingredients like shea butter, natural lighteners like daisy flower, as well as casticin and antioxidants like D-alpha tocopherol support healing, soothe and fortify the skin, and reduce the appearance of melanin formation. A mineral-based sunscreen should also be applied frequently throughout the day to protect against photo damage. A scrub with essential oils can exfoliate, replenish and stimulate the skin. This may be followed by a multiacid peel cream with AHAs to further support regeneration. This should always be followed with an SPF during the day and is also recommended for

a nighttime regimen. For dry or irritated conditions, recommend that clients apply a soothing, nurturing balm containing growth factors, cacao seed butter and sandalwood and lavender oils. This reduces dryness, irritation and inflammation while supporting wound repair. For a deeply hydrating overnight treatment, advise clients to also wear cotton gloves or plastic wrap over these treatments. 

TIPS FOR CLIENTS Even the best home care is only successful if the client understands how to protect their hands. The following are a few best practices to consider sharing with clients: • Apply sunscreen frequently throughout the day. • Wear gloves while driving to protect against UV exposure. • Rehydrate the hands after each wash. • Wear rubber gloves while doing dishes or cleaning. • Avoid harsh detergents, synthetic fragrances, preservatives, sulfates and dyes. • Avoid hot-air hand dryers.

NOTE OF CAUTION! The skin on the hands is fairly durable, however if conditions such as eczema or extreme dryness are present, focus on healing and soothing. Avoid overuse of scrubs and alcohol-based products as well as clay-based masks, which may further dry the skin. CONCEPT How would you define the concept of your spa? Our guests come to KindSpa for the cannabis experience! We create mobile spa parties that include massage, facials, catering and bartending, but cannabis is what sets us apart from other mobile spa companies and other spa treatments in general. We give our clients the opportunity to pair any of our spa treatments with a cannabis and food experience.

MARKETING

A one- of- a- kind

mobile cannabis spa! created by Belinda Guillory

How do you attract new clients and encourage them to revisit? In addition to our private in-home spa parties, we have monthly ticketed events at different venues where folks can buy a single ticket. That way, without investing in an entire party for several guests, someone can try out the KindSpa experience and have a massage, a facial, catering, bar and cannabis gift bag in a group setting for an affordable price. This gives individuals, couples and small groups the opportunity to try us out before committing and provides great referrals to in-home KindSpa events! What are your marketing techniques? KindSpa focuses on creating value for our social media community by posting content that’s not centered on promotion. We focus on educating our com-

munity on issues around the legalization of recreational cannabis and uses of cannabis in health, beauty and overall wellness. We have a website that informs users about the company and offers bookings and access to our social community. Do you partner with any local vendors? We have two caterers — a main caterer for most of our menus and a vegan caterer specifically for our vegan menus.

TRAINING How do you train your staff? Since we’re a mobile spa, we don’t have lots of opportunity to get all staff together for trainings and meetings. We rely on hiring licensed technicians with years of experience who have worked in other mobile environments. In the Los Angeles area, many technicians work “on set,” for events and shoots in the entertainment industry. Therefore, we have the opportunity to hire from a large pool of technicians who are accustomed to working for mobile companies! How do you plan to review staff performance? We are a very new mobile spa, opening only this past June. Our goal is to review staff performance at the 90day, six-month and one year marks. Performance goals in our company at this time are primarily centered on client satisfaction, the ability to satisfactorily perform in various mobile environments and reliability. As the company grows, we’re looking to select high-performing employees to lead spa parties and provide other managerial tasks. How do you incentivize your employees? We’re focusing on building a positive relationship with all of our employees! We thrive on treating them as the re-

sponsible independent contractors that they are and do not cultivate a strong hierarchy in our dealings with employees. We have a contract that strictly delineates our contractual relationship and the company rules. Other than that, our employees are treated with nothing but respect, as we strive to work as a team that comes together to create an enjoyable experience for our guests. We pay our employees on time and always do what we say we’re going to do. We cultivate an atmosphere of mutual respect and professionalism!

RETAIL AND REVENUE How do you select retail? At this time, we don’t retail any products. Our business model is focused on cannabis, and retailing recreational cannabis will not be legal in California until January 1st, 2018. For now, we are gifting recreational cannabis under California guidelines and working toward a recreational delivery license for 2018. We don’t intend to retail noncannabis products. What would you say is your spa revenue composition? Our revenue composition consists of approximately one-third spa treatments, one-third catering/bartending and one-third event service. This ratio is attributed to the fact that our packages are set up this way. Guests can create custom packages that are different than our pre-set package offerings, but we have minimums for spa services, catering and event service due to the costs involved with mobile spa party creation.

TELL US MORE! Tell us about your treatment equipment and facilities. As a mobile spa, we don’t have hard facilities. At this time, we have treatment equipment to service three massage

clients and three facial clients at a time while other party guests enjoy food and drink. Space is an issue in most California homes, so we can’t bring too much equipment to any one event. If you could give your younger self one piece of advice about being a business leader, what would it be? A piece of advice I’d give my younger self about business in general is to learn about the big things that hold women back in business and focus on overcoming those things! For example, women tend to fail to negotiate salary offers and accept the first offer given to them, which is usually a lowball offer. This is with an expectation that they will work hard and prove themselves at a job and earn a higher salary. This is not what happens at most jobs. Companies want to pay as little as possible, and the higher a salary you negotiate at the beginning as well as at the time of salary review makes a huge difference over the lifetime of your career.

What else would you like our readers to know about KindSpa? It is the only mobile spa currently offering parties with cannabis gift bags, food, drink and spa treatments. We strive to create an environment where our guests experience something different and special!

We want to he ar from YOU!

DEALING WITH DIFFICULT SPA CLIENTS Top tips for managing challenging clients in the spa

by Louis Silberman

As any spa owner or technician knows, difficult clients come in every form — including those who are habitually tardy, notoriously rude, and just plain miserable. There’s no doubt you’ve encountered at least one client who walks through the door and makes you say under your breath, “Oh no, it’s her (or him) again.”

business Dealing With Difficult Spa Clients

Encountering a few difficult spa clients is simply unavoidable, and they’re a part of doing business. But like so many unpleasant things in life, your reaction to them is far more important than any inciting incident. You do have some control in these matters — you can either dwell on what isn’t going well, or use your energy to focus instead on everything that is. So you do need a few back-pocket strategies to turn those angry lions into little lambs. All it takes is a spoonful of sugar and a solid commitment to the highest level of customer service… no matter what.

Focus on Solutions, Not Problems I know you’re thinking, “But why should I bend over backward for a jerk?” Believe me, I know just how easy it would be to tell a difficult client to hit the road. But when I’m tempted to do so, I always remind myself that she or he is still human, and maybe has a few 48

friends and a family (even if it’s a family of dragons). There must be somebody out there who loves that person for who they are (or despite it). Even the biggest jerk deserves to be heard, and your obligation as a service provider is to remain professional in any circumstance. Regardless of who’s in the wrong, the client must walk away feeling good about their experience with you. Your reputation and your livelihood depend on it, and both are essential for staying in business. Your biggest challenge isn’t winning over lovey-dovey, easygoing clients. Of course, you appreciate them and how they make your life easier, but they don’t necessarily help you grow. Your job is to put on your game face in moments of adversity, turning negative situations into positive ones. Let’s review a variety of scenarios involving difficult spa clients, and some options for appeasing them — without letting them walk all over you.

Types of Difficult Clients and Strategies for Dealing with Them “I’m running 40 minutes late — but I still get my full service hour, right?” This is a tough one, and spa owners have different opinions about how to handle it. Yes, you could cancel the appointment and charge them for the full service time, or at least a penalty fee if you have such policies in place. Yes, you could also block them from making future appointments, but think twice before doing that. Many disgruntled clients take to social media, and one devastating review could cost you 10 potential new clients. The scenario of late clients requires you to be a good communicator. One option is to stop the appointment at its original ending time so that you stay on schedule, but offer to give the client extra time at their next appoint-

business Dealing With Difficult Spa Clients ment. If you have the time that same day, you can ask them to wait until you finish with your next client so that you can give them your full attention afterward. This way, even if the tardiness is 100 percent the client’s fault, they still feel like they’re getting the benefit of your time. For chronically late clients, consider telling them that their upcoming appointments begin 40 minutes before they are actually scheduled to begin to avoid the recurring issue. “Can’t you give me a quick eyebrow wax while you’re at it?” There will always be the client who tries to manipulate you to give them just a little more than what they paid for — in other words, free services or add-ons. The key here is to be fair to your business (and to your other clients who pay the fair price for these services) but end on a high note for the client. While you may not have time “today” to throw in a waxing, you’ll be happy to schedule extra time for it at their next appointment if they would like to book one. “Sorry to cancel again, but my hamster’s sick.” If a last-minute cancellation has only happened once, take the opportunity to reiterate your cancellation policy (if you don’t have one, make one), letting the client know you’re willing to make an exception just this once. If the client is a serial canceller, you may need to enforce the terms of your cancellation policy to protect your bottom line and your schedule. “I haven’t been in the sun, it’s just dark in here.” Pre- and post-treatment protocols are not only important to obtain optimal results, they also protect you from liability. This is especially true for clients who demand inappropriate services for their skin types and conditions. If it’s a safety issue, you MUST turn them down. 50

August2017

LNEonline.com

Maintaining a solid commitment to try to appease every difficult client speaks volumes about who you are as a business person. Yes, they will be upset. But you may be able to offset their disappointment by offering them something that is more appropriate at the same price of the service they requested. If the alternative service you recommend is normally more expensive, consider offering it to them at the same price as the service they requested as a goodwill gesture. This way, the client still benefits from the visit and doesn’t feel like they’ve wasted their time. “But this Groupon is only six years old.” This attempt to push the limits of a promotion happens frequently in today’s world of Groupon and Living Social. While I personally haven't seen a significant percentage of Groupon customers converting into loyal clients, I still believe, for the sake of your reputation, that it’s a good idea to make a one-time exception, honoring the expired deal. But make a note of it in the client’s file so history doesn’t repeat itself. “You ruined my face!” (Translated: “Nothing you do will make me happy.”) Perhaps you’re accused of creating “spots that weren’t there before the peel,” or the client tells you that “my chin is now sagging after that micro-current treatment.” While such complaints are occasionally legitimate, oftentimes they come from a client who just needs some extra TLC, and to be heard without you getting defensive. Try offering this client a special deal that either corrects the issue or enhances the result

they are seeking. On a side note, be sure to look for such complaints on your social media pages, and always offer an appropriate and timely response so others see that you’re engaged. “I left my manners in my car — that’s parked in another state.” Let’s face it — some folks simply get their kicks by being unpleasant to others. My advice? Ignore their prickly personalities and give them the same undivided attention you give every client. You may have to kill them with kindness and even then, it probably won’t change how they treat you. But, you never know! You just might be the person who melts their icy heart, if only for an hour or two. KEY STRATEGIES FOR MAINTAINING YOUR SPA CLIENTELE How to keep your clients coming back by Pam Stellema

One of the key elements of any successful business is gaining — and then keeping — new clients. Clients are the lifeblood of every spa, because it doesn’t matter how outstanding your products, services, décor or employees are if you don’t have enough clients to make sufficient sales. Let’s explore some low-cost proven strategies to help you gain valuable new clientele and keep those clients coming back!

ATTRACTING NEW SPA CLIENTS Every spa needs a steady flow of new clients to replace those who leave. However, gaining new clients can be very expensive so it’s important to ensure that your client attraction strategies are returning value on your investment. The following strategies deliver results.

1. Initiate Cross Referrals with Local Businesses. A quick way to gain new clients is to undertake cross referrals with other businesses in your trading area. Identify businesses that cater to your ideal client demographic and approach them to work with you to promote each other’s business. LNEonline.com

business Key strategies for maintaining your spa clientele

For example, a local gym may have loads of clients who would be interested in the services your spa provides. If the gym promotes your business to their clients, you can gain many new clients quickly. Create a special offer for their clients, such as a $10 to $20 spa voucher (depending on the price point of your services) for their first visit. This encourages people to try your services by facilitating a lower price-point for a service they’re interested in having, as opposed to giving them a voucher for one specific type of service that might not interest them. Naturally, you must promote the gym to your own clients so it is a win for both businesses. This type of cross-promotion can be done with multiple non-competing businesses in your trading area and can be for either a short or long duration depending on the business owner's needs.

2. Optimize Your Spa Website 2a. Keywords A great website is much more than pretty pictures on the landing page accompanied by a list of services and an “About” page. In addition to being attractive to your website visitors, it must also be attractive to search engines such as Google, Bing and Yahoo. Prospective clients turn to the Internet when searching for a new local spa, and it’s essential that your spa comes up on the first page of the search results to give you the edge over your competitors. To achieve this, you need to be aware of the search terms prospective clients might use to locate a spa and then work these terms into the copy on your website. For instance, if you’re located in Scarsdale, you want to be found for search terms such as “facials Scarsdale” or “hair removal Scarsdale” or “massage Scarsdale." Once you’re clear about what people are searching for, include the relevant search terms in the copy on your website to help the search engines identify you as the right spa to showcase to the person searching. It is also crucial to update your content frequently. Search engines look for websites that add fresh content regularly (at least monthly), as this indicates that up-to-date information is available

2b. Blogs Another aspect you can add to your website that isn’t costly is a blog. Blogs are simply a series of informative articles that focus on the information your prospective clients are looking for. A blog not only allows you to showcase your expertise, but also helps you to build rapport with the reader. This, in turn, makes them much more likely to do business with you. Your blog articles don’t have to be long — about 500 words is usually enough — but they should be rich in the keywords that prospective clients are likely to use when they do a search.

KEEP CLIENTS COMING BACK Many spa owners focus most of their marketing attention on acquiring new clients, but this can be a costly mistake. In fact, many spa owners are blissfully unaware of how many clients are slipping away from their businesses, as they don’t monitor these figures. Retaining existing clients is not only far less expensive than gaining new ones (around 80 percent less expensive!), but existing clients generally spend more money than new clients at each visit. Therefore, developing strategies to keep existing clients happy and returning is extremely worthwhile for business growth. The following strategies are highly effective to help keep your clients coming back.

1. Develop a Unique Point of Difference What makes your services stand out from your competitors’ offerings? It’s not enough to simply provide great customer service. Many spas do that, so that does not make you different from the pack. You need to make every service you provide unique in your marketplace. Ask yourself (and your employees) how you can transform each service into

business Key strategies for maintaining your spa clientele

Your business name is not a good search term, as prospective clients probably don’t yet know what it is, and won’t use it to find a new spa.

Quality and effective client attraction and retention strategies are essential to the success and growth of your spa. Monitor these areas regularly to stay on top of any issues that may affect your business growth.

2. Create a Worthwhile Loyalty/Reward Program I see many poorly designed loyalty programs within the beauty industry. So poor, in fact, that they’re probably doing more harm than good. A well-constructed loyalty program keeps your clients coming back, and to get this right you must focus on delivering the right reward at the right time. Any rewards provided must be client-centric — not spacentric. In other words, it shouldn’t be about what you want to give as a reward but rather what your clients want to receive. The most successful rewards are those that are valued by the client. If they aren’t, there’s little incentive to remain loyal to your business and your loyalty program will fail. Another key point to keep in mind is that too little delivered too seldom leads to failure and too much generosity on your part negatively impacts your profits, so put some thought into these aspects of your loyalty program.

Have you ever been to a restaurant where the food was divine and the customer service was first class only to return a month later and have exactly the opposite experience? In most instances, people don’t return when this happens, as the inconsistency makes them feel uncertain about their next experience. The same thing happens in spas. No matter how fantastic their first, second or even third experience, if the quality doesn’t remain consistent and the client is disappointed the next time for some reason, they may not return again. To avoid this occurring with your clients, ensure that all your team members are delivering the same treatment by having written treatment protocols in place and providing training on a regular basis. Note that even simple oversights, such as not offering a drink to a client when she is accustomed to receiving one at your spa can really disappoint her. If you deliver your services and customer service in a consistent manner, you’ll never have to worry about disappointed clients looking elsewhere for their treatments.

With the growing popularity and legalization of recreational marijuana, it’s high time that cannabis seeps into other aspects of life… Naturally, wellness and therapeutic experiences are two of its first stops. The health benefits of marijuana aren’t new. Nine states already allow the personal use and possession of cannabis for adults, with an additional 18 states allowing it for medical use. The buzz (pun intended) is now becoming louder than ever. Wellness centers, yoga studios and cafés around the country are offering experiences infused with cannabis. Their innovation serves as the perfect inspiration for spas to offer this ultimate complement to traditional services.

CANNABIS, YOGA & MEDITATION While many people may feel that cannabis and exercise do not go hand-inhand, there is an emerging group of individuals who claim that the two actually pair quite well. In fact, they claim that practicing yoga and receiving the 60

therapeutic benefits they so desperately need would be all but impossible without the relaxation and pain relieving qualities cannabis offers. CannaYoga, an exploration based cannabis yoga studio in Las Vegas, Nev., offers a one-hour “Smoke and Stretch” class that provides a variety of experiences to benefit clients physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. This slow-style Yin yoga class begins with approximately 10 minutes of social time in which participants discuss their personal health experiences with THC and cannabis. Because recreational marijuana is legal in Nevada and CannaYoga is located on private property, participants are free to administer the THC however they wish in the safe space. The class continues with a series

of simple, relaxing poses that provide physical pain relief and also allow for meditative and introspective relief. Ren Jacobson, owner of CannaYoga, states on the benefits of her cannabis-infused yoga sessions, “As my clients learn to control their mind from wandering, I am able to guide them into relieving any stress, tension or pain they are holding in the body with simple mat-based poses that we hold for about three to six minutes each.” She continues, “My clients have reported to me both physical ligament and muscle pain relief as well as an overall easier time sleeping.” After class, Jacobson offers her clients a variety of refreshments. Each class is priced at $25 and is comprised of a wide demographic of clients, including men, women, athletes, workingclass individuals and even those cur-

More than ever, cannabis is being incorporated into a plethora of gourmet goodies and food options. Chris Sayegh, head chef at The Herbal Chef in Los Angeles, Calif., has created a euphoric experience for his customers via a 10-course tasting menu consisting of a variety of THC-infused appetizers, meals, snacks and desserts. Planned to perfection, Sayegh serves each course with an appropriate amount of herb to assure a relaxing and delightful experience. Sayegh states, “We have mastered how to keep our customers in this euphoric zone so that they are able to enjoy the entirety of the meal and not become overwhelmed at any point during the dinner.” He continues, “Because of the body’s endocannabinoid system, the brain and nervous system allow us to receive cannabinoids from cannabis and hemp plants. When this system is running smoothly and is well nourished, the whole body itself is able run more smoothly and calmly, which is why ingesting cannabis-infused foods is stimulating for us mentally, physically and emotionally.” A 10-course tasting menu can range anywhere from $100 to $500 per person, depending on the ingredients used in the meal. Participants must be at least 21 years of age and sign a waiver prior to the meal. The Herbal Chef also partners with spas and wellness centers to create weekend getaways for couples. CANNABIS-INFUSED ACUPUNCTURE Cannabis is known as “ma” in Chinese, which means “help” and “numbness,” as well as being the word for the plant itself. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) the body is viewed as a balance of two opposing forces: yin and yang. Yin represents the cold, slow or passive principle, while yang represents the

Marijuana Spa Connection guide

hot, excited or active principle. TCM philosophy presupposes that health is achieved by maintaining the body in a “balanced state” and that disease is due to an internal imbalance of yin and yang. This imbalance leads to blockage in the flow of Qi (aka chi, or "vital energy"), and of blood along pathways known as meridians. TCM practitioners typically use herbs, acupuncture and massage to help unblock Qi and blood in patients in an attempt to bring the body back into wellness. The process itself uses the herb’s smoke as it is burned close to the skin (but not touching it) in a small cup or “cigar.” The smoke creates suction and the pressure and heat from both the “cigar” and the needle allow blocks in chi to be released. Through chemical signaling between the two, evidence suggests that endocannabinoid binding can create an overall reduction in both pain and reduction of an inflammatory response, which is also thought to be one of the main triggers of chronic diseases and conditions of all kinds. John Mini, acupuncturist, herbalist and author of “How to Balance and Optimize the Effects of Cannabis with Traditional Chinese Medicine,” believes that acupuncturists and herbalists are the most important alternative-medicine healers. He states, “Acupuncturists and herbalists have the ability to ob-

serve directly and understand the effects of marijuana in clinical practice. Marijuana is an herb. It has qualities just like any other herb. Exploring the effects of marijuana falls within the scope of what we already do in this industry.” Cannabis-infused acupuncture treatments are usually recommended at twice per week for up to four weeks ($300/week). Treatment is offered only to those over the age of 21 and all participants must sign a waiver treatment. The Rise

of Hemp and Cannabis in the Spa

Topical treatments buzzing onto the spa scene by Aurora Solis

Several states are expected to legalize marijuana this year, and the spa industry is getting in on the action by incorporating it into their products and treatments! But before thinking about implementing this potent plant into a spa menu, it is important to understand the difference between cannabis and hemp.

Hemp and cannabis are both derived from a Cannabis Sativa plant, but are identified differently based on how the plant is grown. When cannabis is fertilized, it lowers the concentration of THC – the main active chemical that creates psychoactive effects. Ideal concentrations of THC in cannabis range from 10 percent to as much as 30 percent. Usually grown indoors so that it can be monitored closely, cannabis is bred for its potent, resinous glands. These glands contain high amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is the cannabinoid most known for its psychoactive properties. Hemp, on the other hand, is grown naturally and is typically bred for oils and topical ointments. Hemp contains a max THC level of 0.3 percent, essentially making it impossible to feel any psychoactive effect. Rather, hemp contains high cannabidiol (CBD) content that acts as THC’s antagonist, essentially making the minimal amount of THC useless. 66

Peep our “Cannabis in the Spa” article in this month’s Guide for more skin care and health benefits of THC, hemp and CBD! Spa treatments containing THC properties are only starting to be offered, and are still extremely rare. There is great potential for spas to incorporate hemp and cannabis-based treatments into their menu, and we have the inside scoop on some of the most stimulating products and treatments already on the market!

HEAVENLY HASH BATH Dahila Mertens, a massage therapist based in southwest Colorado, discusses the beneficial properties of a heavenly hash bath. She recommends a cannabis-infused hash formula blended with key herbs, which can include relaxing ingredients such as lavender, chamomile, peppermint and grapeseed oil.

“These herbs work together to create a very soothing therapeutic soak that not only treats hypertension, insomnia and general aches and pains, but also leaves the skin hydrated, moisturized and glowing,” she explains. During this treatment, a cannabis herb sachet is dropped into a very hot bathtub and allowed to steep like a big cup of herbal tea for a soak lasting approximately 30 to 60 minutes ($65 recommended for a private tub soak). The soak itself does not produce a cerebral high, however, it is very effective at promoting a deep sense of relaxation, and the body can experience some pleasant tingling sensations. The THC in the bath does not enter the bloodstream, but the plant’s powerful healing properties help soothe sore muscles, relieve stress and even aid with hangovers and PMS symptoms. Regarding how to implement this particular treatment into a spa, Mertens states, “The spa would need to create a relationship with a dispensary, allowing

Marijuana Spa Connection guide

clients to pick up the product to bring into the spa. In order to sell cannabis products at this time, you must be a licensed dispensary and cannot have on-site consumption, meaning the spa could not sell the hash bath treatment directly to the consumer.” Mertens offers this treatment to both men and women over the age of 21 and reports nothing but positive feedback from her clients, especially those suffering from insomnia. This treatment can be performed alone or in collaboration with a cannabis-infused massage treatment. A waiver should be signed by the client prior to each treatment.

CANNA-BLISS BODY TREATMENT Topical benefits of cannabis can be applied to the entire body and work handin-hand with relaxation body wraps, scrubs and massage treatments. Shelby Palmieri, owner of Serenity Spa and Salon in Keystone, Colo., offers a fullbody cannabis-infused treatment to both locals and tourists over the age of 21 with the completion of a waiver. Palmieri states, “This signature body treatment was developed specifically to allow them to better absorb the healing cannabis oils for anti-inflammatory and relaxation purposes.” The cannabis body treatment (150 minutes/$245) begins with a full-body sugar scrub infused with cannabis, organic brown sugar and grapeseed oil to exfoliate dead surface cells, tone the skin and awaken the body’s senses. The client is then cocooned in a warm steam tent as they continue to absorb the components of the scrub for 30 to 40 minutes. The client is then rinsed in the spa’s basic stand up shower and returned to the treatment table where they then receive a full 90-minute massage infused with both cannabis and CBD-infused creams. Although marijuana is legal in Colorado, it requires a special license to sell within an establishment. “We have products that contain only CBD, not any psycho-active THC,” Palmeri states.

“This is how we are able to use these products within our spa environment and not be licensed to retail marijuana.” A steam tent or room is required to offer this specific treatment in a spa. This body treatment typically stands alone, however, a cannabis-based cream can be added to any massage treatment upon a client’s request.

MILE HIGH MASSAGE This signature service, offered exclusively at LoDo Massage Studio in Denver, Colo., includes techniques from a variety of therapeutic methods based on the client’s needs: deep tissue, sports massage, neuromuscular therapy, myofascial release and Swedish massage. Clients over the age of 21 may choose to have their massage enhanced with a cannabis-spiked lotion that contains THC and CBD properties as well as arnica, peppermint and juniper. The client experiences soothing, cool sensations as they are immediately relieved from pain and inflammation during this massage. “When combined with a cannabis-infused lotion, this treatment can ease muscle soreness, increase mobility, even lessen the achiness that develops after deeptissue work,” states Alexi Atkins, a mas-

sage therapist at LoDo Massage Studio. Because the THC does not enter the bloodstream, the client does not experience any psychoactive effects.

HEMP HAND AND FOOT TREATMENT This treatment offered at Spa del Mar in Santa Barbara, Calif., is the ultimate method for renewing and revitalizing both the hands and feet using hempbased products. The treatment begins with either a salt or sugar scrub (based on the client’s skin) utilizing a seaweed glycolic exfoliation to remove dead skin and allow the skin to better absorb the following hand and foot treatment. Julie Rose, owner of Spa del Mar, states on the treatment, “After the scrub, using an all-natural hemp-based hydrating lotion, the client’s hands and feet are massaged using reflexology techniques to gently relax the client and ease any pain or irritation caused by dry or cracked skin.” The strictly hemp-based lotion does not contain THC and the client does not experience any psychoactive effects during the treatment. This specific hand and foot treatment is only available as an add-on to the spa’s facial menu. There is no age limit for this treatment and no waiver required.

THE LATEST

ON SKIN CARE AND

CBD

Skin care’s latest powerful cannabis gem

by Jenna Musgrave

CBD (cannabidiol) is a voluminous, naturally occurring phytoactive cannabinoid, prevalent in both the hemp and cannabis plant, along with more than 100 other cannabinoids. Yet, CBD is not psychotropic, so consuming CBD by itself isn’t going to send one on the cerebral adventure associated with THC (tetrahydrocannabinol, the only cannabinoid found in either plant that generates psychoactive effects). Simply put, when CBD alone is extracted from the hemp plant, it does not get a person high! The true efficacy of CBD is topical — as it penetrates deeply into the skin it triggers the cellular communication responsible for numerous positive, physiological responses in the body.

Cannabinoids 101: The Body Makes Them!

CBD is the most prevalent, non-psychoactive cannabinoid found in the hemp plant, yet most people are unaware that the body itself creates cannabinoids. This is done through what is called the “endogenous cannabinoid system” (ECS), which controls and regulates many biological processes. The self-made cannabinoids of the ECS are referred to as “endocannabinoids,” which are a sequence of indigenous chemical compounds dispersed throughout the entire body and recognized for helping to regulate neurological and immunological responses and oil production of skin. CBD, like other cannabinoids, is able to work its magic through the internal ECS, which consists of both CB1 and CB2 receptors found just beneath the skin, concentrated around the face and brain. The ECS creates a positive effect for overall wellness of the body, while also establishing and facilitating the necessary pathways for CBD to work synergistically!

ANTI-INFLAMMATORY Many cultures across the world have embraced CBD and its anti-inflammatory properties for decades, recognizing that it has the power to permeate into even the deepest layers of skin. Scientific research signifies the efficacy of CBD and fellow cannabinoids, as being highly anti-inflammatory — and it is growing daily! CBD has been proven to contain potent anti-inflammatory properties, as it works to suppress the body’s inflammatory response through multiple cellular pathways. In the world of beauty and skin care, this is a major A+ for CBD, as inflammation is always a perpetrator behind skin conditions, accelerated aging and other imperfections. 70

ACNE While inflammation accentuates blemishes, an excess in sebum can prompt breakouts in the first place. Some individuals suffer from overactive sebaceous glands that cause their body to excrete too much oil. Tamas Biro, M.D., of Hungary, researched the regulatory role of the endocannabinoid system, as well as the closely related family of the transient receptor potential (TRP) ion channels in the formation and establishment of the complex barrier of the human skin. He conducted a study on the efficacy of CBD in fighting acne, and found that it could penetrate the skin readily through a transdermal path and succeed in pacifying overactive sebaceous glands while impeding lipid synthesis. Such studies show that CBD appears to be able to stop the excess oil that causes acne in the first place.

ECZEMA/PSORIASIS According to research, if CBD is applied topically to areas of the skin affected by eczema and psoriasis (skin conditions characterized with a dry, itchy rash), it cuts the inflammatory response and ultimately encourages the skin’s natural restoration to good health! Such skin conditions are the result of both environmental and genetic stimulants. Hence, due to the immuno-suppressant properties of CBD, the inflammatory

responses triggered so often for those suffering from various forms of atopic dermatitis (eczema, psoriasis, rosacea etc.) are lessened. Consequently, skin that traditionally overreacts to numerous stimuli is no longer as intensely affected.

MELANOMA As our general knowledge and understanding of CBD continues to grow, so too do the possible remedies for even the most destructive skin care diseases, such as melanoma. Recent studies have revealed that cannabinoids, when applied topically or in-vitro to melanoma cells, lead to their apoptosis, or death. Notably, these continued discoveries have significant potential for those who desperately seek a viable, alternative approach to that of traditional cancer treatments!

ANTI-AGING The copious amounts of chemicals, pollutants and toxins emitted daily into the air people breathe — and that which the skin absorbs — continues to grow. Consequently, unless one takes action through skin care, these impurities begin to generate physical repercussions on the way skin appears and ages. According to Raj Gupta, Ph.D.

Marijuana Spa Connection guide (chief scientific officer of Colorado Springs–based Folium Biosciences, a company that produces ultrapremium, THC-free, phytocannabinoid-rich hemp oil), “Because our skin has its own endocannabinoid system, just the superficial application of CBD by itself is extremely helpful. CBD is an antioxidant, so you can see the changes in skin pattern, such as a reduction in hyperpigmentation,” he explains. Bottom line: CBD demonstrates the power to combat the overwhelming free radicals in the environment that promote the proliferation and appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and has the ability to jump-start the rejuvenation of damaged, dull and dry skin, making it a powerful anti-aging agent.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR: CBD is poised to play a significant role in future skin care treatments, routines and regimens. The skin is the largest organ in the body and absorbs anything applied to it, so it is very important to know what to look for when choosing products containing CBD oil. The amount of CBD oil within a given skin care or beauty product traditionally ranges from 2 to 150 milligrams. While higher amounts of CBD oil are intended to serve in a more medicinal approach as a clinical treatment, lesser

amounts are found in traditional skin care and beauty products. Always check the Ingredient Deck associated with each product; a product is best when CBD oil appears in the beginning to middle portion of the deck.

Where is CBD legal? CBD is one of many non-intoxicating cannabinoids found in cannabis plants. Naturally, there are many questions about the legality of CBD due to its origins. Many products are made from agricultural hemp, such as hemp protein and hemp seeds, which are legally produced and shipped to all 50 states. This also includes a thriving hemp-based CBD industry, including hemp based CBD oil used in skin care. CBD is a naturally occurring chemical compound, much like lycopene in tomatoes, resveratrol in wine, and polyphenols in chocolate. While CBD doesn’t officially claim to cure or prevent any disease, consumers are drawn en masse for many different reasons to these hemp based oils that contain cannabinoids. In the 28 states where medical marijuana is legal, CBD products from cannabis have legal protections. Sixteen states have passed CBD-only laws, which legalize the possession and use of cannabis based CBD

Pearls IN Skin Care

Topical and internal skin care benefits of fresh and saltwater pearls by Bella Schneider While most people think of pearls as nothing more than a fancy accessory, those rare, lustrous beads from the sea actually offer numerous skin care benefits when used either topically or internally. Ancient royalty such as Cleopatra, the Queen of Egypt and Chinese Empress Wu Zetian are known to have utilized pearls to maintain their youthful beauty. Today, this precious substance is used in classical Chinese medicine and Ayurveda to strengthen bones, as a skin rejuvenator and brightener. Pearls are also a well-known beauty ingredient in many skin care products throughout Latin America, Europe and Asia. Pearls in skin care are a powerhouse because they contain dozens of important amino acids as well as many beautifying minerals, including calcium, magnesium, zinc, iron, strontium, copper, selenium, silicon and titanium. Best of all, these precious nutrients are easily assimilated and utilized by the body, providing a wide range of beauty support, especially to the skin. Both fresh and saltwater pearls can be ground into a fine powder and used for a multitude of benefits.

What Exactly are Pearls? To understand the “how” and the “why” behind the power of pearl extract in skin care, it’s important to understand the science behind pearls. A natural pearl begins its life inside an oyster's shell when an intruder, such as a grain of sand or bit of floating food, slips in between one of the two shells, and the protective layer that covers the mollusk's organs, called the mantle. In order to protect itself from irritation, the oyster quickly begins covering the uninvited visitor with layers of nacre — the mineral substance that fashions the mollusk's shells. Layer upon layer of nacre, also known as mother-of-pearl, coat the grain of sand until the iridescent gem is formed. In essence, a pearl is a self-created panacea to damage, which explains why pearl essence is so potent.

Skin Benefits and Properties Anti-inflammatory Pearl essence is packed with antioxidants and boosts the efficacy of superoxide dismutase, a strong antioxidant enzyme in the body, which helps diminish inflammation. Pearl also contains polysaccharides, 17 amino acids, more than 30 trace minerals, a high concentration of calcium and signal proteins. This includes conchiolin, a fibrous protein that forms the iridescent inner layer — which helps regenerate the skin’s natural collagen.

Healing Pearl essence accelerates collagen and elastin renewal, repairs damaged cells and improves the overall health of our circulatory, endocrine and immune systems. It boosts superoxide dismutase, which reverses dull, uneven skin tone and supercharges the body’s power to reverse free radical damage. Powdered pearl's chief ingredient is calcium carbonate, which is easily absorbed by the skin. This absorption stimulates fibro78

blasts and accelerates skin healing from injuries such as wounds, burns, redness, rashes and even rosacea.

killing bacteria. Also a great exfoliator, pearl speeds up the skin's natural process of shedding dead cells and creating new ones.

Elasticity Pearl essence promotes elasticity in the skin, making it softer because it strengthens the internal structure of the cells responsible for skin nutrition and density. With such a high concentration of amino acid — the building blocks of collagen — pearl helps skin to maintain its youthful plumpness.

Luminous Conchiolin is the property that provides pearls with that iridescent sheen. When applied onto the skin, it brightens the complexion, imparting a rainbow-like luminescence that adds vitality, radiance and a youthful glow. Pearl essence also promotes the growth of new skin cells, smoothing fine lines and wrinkles.

Disinfectant Here’s a little known fact: pearl essence is used in surgeon’s gloves during operations to help prevent the spread of infection. Yes, pearl has incredible sterilizing properties. Its antiseptic ability also works wonders on acne and blemishes by absorbing excess oil and

Sun Damage Pearl’s abundance of minerals such as calcium, magnesium, iron and conchiolin help prevent the development of melanin (which causes age spots, freckles and dark patches on the skin — a.k.a. sun damage). It reduces pigmentation and lightens uneven skin tone by inhibiting tyrosinase, an enzyme responsible for melanin production. It also acts as a natural filter of UV rays. By stimulating natural collagen production, it helps skin protect itself against melasma, age spots, dark patches and sunspots creating radiant, more youthful-looking skin.

Rosacea Packed with fortifying minerals that strengthen skin, pearl essence is very effective at combating rosacea conditions. Its soothing and healing properties reduce the redness, burning and irritation caused by this condition. And, because it is also a disinfectant and natural bacteria fighter, pearl extract dries out harmful moisture and bumps.

Pearl Skin Care Products & Services Pearl essence can be found in anti-aging, brightening and nourishing facemasks, facial moisturizers, or in a pure powder form. In your spa, you can offer a pearl facial that focuses on healing, anti-aging, brightening and nourishing by incorporating the powder into your mask, moisturizer and final finishing powder. Opt for pearl powders sourced from clean, pure waters that are free from pollution and metals and are not hydrolyzed or chemically treated. Note that powder with a finer consistency is more easily absorbed into the skin.

Oral pearl supplementation slows down the aging process by promoting cell building, thanks to its high concentration of amino acids. Pearl protects

tates repair of damaged skin cells and enhances peripheral circulation. As many women are deficient in calcium, magnesium, amino acids and trace minerals (the core components of pearl), it makes sense to start incorporating this gift from the sea into the beauty and health regime you offer your clients. While it may sound out of the norm, people have been using pearls in skin care for thousands of years. It seems they were onto something! 

VEGAN

SKIN CARE, PLEASE!

Catering to animal-friendly clients in the spa by Carrie Borzillo

As more spa clients seek organic, all-natural and holistic treatments, the next logical step in their wellness journey is heading toward vegan skin care services. Whether it's for the love of animals or the sheer fact that people are realizing that what they put into your body is just as important as what they put on it, ecofriendly spa goers are asking for vegan services more than ever before. Here are four ways to turn your typical wraps, facials and beauty applications into vegan treatments.

SUPER DELUXE FACIAL Mouna de Laine, owner of the Moroccan Spa in North Hollywood, Calif., says that being a vegan spa is not just about avoiding products with animal parts (such as collagen and gelatin) or products tested on animals. It's also about catering to the vegan client's lifestyle, which typically includes being chemical-free and eco-friendly. "We have everything we need in nature," says de Laine. "We're always searching for vegan alternatives to solve our clients' skin issues. So for acne, we would use willow bark instead of salicylic acid. For hyperpigmentation and melasma, we use lemons and papaya. To exfoliate, we use papaya and orange peel enzymes." One of the spa's most popular vegan skin care treatments is the Super Deluxe Facial (60 minutes, $77 or 90 minutes, $145), which uses a vibrating brush and customized vegan mask with citrus, papaya and pumpkin enzymes to exfoliate, rose or orange blossom mask for tightening, and jasmine or sandalwood for toning. HIMALAYAN SALT DETOX BODY WRAP The Himalayan Salt Detox Body Wrap (50 minutes, $180) at Elizabeth Adam Salon and Spa in Chicago, Ill., uses a seaweed vegan gel in lieu of the typical gelatin used in many spa treatments. Regular gelatin contains collagen obtained from various animal body parts, including connective tissues. "The seaweed vegan gel contains klamath blue-green algae that hydrates and detoxifies the skin,” explains owner Elizabeth Adam. “The active moisturizer base includes willow bark extract, aloe vera oil, vitamin E, rosehip seed oil, lavender and a touch of fragrance to lift the spirits. The second ingredient is agar-agar." The gel-like solution is made from a species of seaweed known as agarophytes, which is incredibly nutrient rich, and its jelly-like consistency means it helps to thicken and hold other ingredients in products. "The agar-agar is an alternative to regular gelatin, which comes from animals. The seaweed that agar-agar is made from is packed with iron, magnesium, copper and calcium, and many other nutrients,” adds Adam. “Beside having a remineralizing effect on the skin, when topically applied, it has an anti-inflammatory effect."

PHOTOTHERAPY ORGANIC FACIAL Vida Organic Wellness, an eco-friendly vegan day spa in Seal Beach, Calif., opts for gels made from raw herbs and plant oils, such as rosehips and stonecrop, for their PhotoTherapy Organic Facial (75 minutes, $120). Some of the custom organic masks used contain vegetarian "gelatin" derived from fruits and vegetables as well. "When using products that are natural and well-received by the skin, the results will always be better,” says Julia 84

August2017

LNEonline.com

Donovan, who co-owns the spa with Rosana Oliveira. “Think of it this way — when you eat something that isn't natural and is full of chemicals, you tend to not feel well. Digestion and absorption is poor. So, choosing the organic, pure and natural route with no animal products or bi-products may give better results welcomed by the skin and body." Donovan adds that part of being a vegan spa is also using ingredients that are not tested on animals, and that are eco-friendly, which means organic, natural, sustainable and with no GMOs or chemicals. "We've definitely seen a huge increase in people looking for organic, natural and vegan therapies," she says.

VEGAN MAKEUP & NAILS Makeup and nail polishes are often chock full of hidden animal products. For instance, tallow (cow fat) is used in many lipsticks and guanine (crushed fish scales) is used in many nail polishes, eye shadows and blushes. "We have clients that will drive 30 to 45 minutes simply because we offer vegan treatments,” says Nancy Reagan, owner of Bella Reina Spa in Delray Beach, Fla., which offers a variety

of vegan makeup applications (natural application is 30 minutes, $45) and manicures and pedicures (40 minutes, $33). “When vegan makeup choices first came out, it wasn't the best as far as application and staying power. Those days are long gone. Hands down, I will put our face primer and foundation out there against anything on the market for long-lasting wear and application." A few of the key vegan ingredients for the makeup application are carnauba and candelilla waxes, mineral pigments for color, gluten-free vitamin E, organic shea butter, and jojoba seed and grape seed oils. "With a foundation that has 11 percent pigment versus a drugstore or department store brand four to six percent pigment, the vegan foundation is going to cover, correct and outlast longer and better," Reagan says. 

It is gratifying to see a guest walk out feeling beautiful and poised. Makeup application is an art and I have fun expressing my artistic talents as I create a unique look for each guest! When did you decide to add makeup services to your spa menu? Day one! I would never have opened a spa without incorporating makeup services into the menu. Makeup is one of my biggest passions and has played huge role in my career development. What approaches did you take to implement your makeup services? The main approach was educating

myself about the different types and brands of makeup available. I met with various makeup companies in order to feel out their products. I carry products in multiple brands in order to suit all skin types. What is the most difficult part of offering makeup services in your facility? Working with a guest who never wears makeup. It is sometimes hard to get a client to open up to something new and feel comfortable and confident while doing so. What kind of makeup treatment specials do you offer? A standard one-time makeup application as well as a makeup lesson and application. Our makeup lessons teach

the client how to apply their makeup, which products to choose, and which color combinations to select based on their skin type. During the session, the esthetician applies makeup to half of the face and the client applies makeup to the other half. For brides, we offer packages for trial runs, allowing them to customize and make changes to the application before the day of the wedding.

MAKEUP AREA Please describe your makeup area. Our makeup area is in the front of our spa and is set up to catch the eye of those passing by. We have a beautiful makeup vanity, makeup chair and mirror with special makeup lights. Our makeup is kept in the vanity drawers to make the area always look clean and crisp. Our retail is displayed on shelves in the front of the spa by the reception desk, and takes up almost all of the wall space in the area. Do you tweak the area for events or promotions? The dĂŠcor of our makeup area is constantly changing for any upcoming holidays or special events. If we hold a special event at the spa then we rearrange and decorate the waiting area accordingly. We like to offer upgraded refreshments and snacks for parties like bachelorettes, baby showers, birthdays and anniversaries!

TEAM MEMBERS How do you select your makeup artists? Based on their knowledge and experience. I require that they come in for two interviews and provide two to three references that can comment on their assets and work ethic. During the first interview, I determine whether they have a qualifying background and personality that fits with the nature of the spa. During the second interview, they

are required to bring a model and perform a basic makeup application. I then determine if their skills are right for the position or not. I look for people who are self-motivated, creative, knowledgeable and have a drive to learn! How do you keep members of your staff incentivized? All employees receive perks such as free services, 30 percent off products and the opportunity to earn cash bonuses if they exceed their weekly sales quota. My employees are also provided with free education on new products, treatments or makeup services so they can keep up with the skin care industry as it evolves.

MARKETING How do you promote your makeup services? Our biggest promotion is new clients receive 20 percent off their first treatment! In addition, we have limited time only promotions that change every few months. We especially like to target promotions to certain holidays such as Mother’s Day or Christmas. We also attend several wedding expos in the Boston area to attract brides-to-be, and occasionally meet with managers of local businesses such as hair salons and bridal shops to extend our services to their clientele. Finally, we are lucky to have satisfied clients who spread the word and even voted us in the top 5 on Boston’s A-list for makeup! Are your makeup artists trained to promote different services after each treatment? We only recommend products to clients that we believe will truly benefit them individually. If a guest has a question about a product, we love to educate them and introduce some of our other services or products. If a guest just wants to come in for a one-time treatment, we respect that.

Arlene Maserejian

How do you use social media and email platforms for promotion? We post on our Facebook and Instagram accounts three times a week. We include live videos, before and after pictures and new promotions and specials in our posts. Clients can receive 10 percent off their treatment if they “check in” to Blush Spa on Facebook. Additionally, we keep a database of email addresses of all our guests and send out email blasts when we have a new promotion or special.

Extra Tips and Tricks What trends are you currently seeing in the industry? Thick, arched eyebrows are the new trend! For those who have thin or light colored eyebrows, many have been getting their eyebrows microbladed to avoid filling them in with a pencil each day. Eyelash extensions, bold lips and

cut-creased eye shadows have also become extremely popular. Do you have rituals or methods to create positive energy in your spa? Yes! We always turn on our essential oil diffuser so a relaxing aroma fills the spa. We have candles lit in both the treatment rooms and reception area to accentuate the tranquility of the spa. We play soothing music in the background to promote relaxation and provide cold water with lemon slices. What advice would you pass along to other spa owners or those thinking of offering makeup in their spa? Make sure you have the time and dedication! You must put 100 percent of yourself into running a spa to be successful. You cannot solely rely on social media for marketing — be prepared to attend events and self-promote your business. Stay on top of new trends, and stand out in your own unique way!

NO MASCARA MAKEUP

The Ultimate Alternative for Clients with Little to No Lashes by Ami Mallon

Thick, long lashes have always played a large role in beauty regimens, which is why many may find the emergence of one of today’s newest trends —the “no mascara” makeup look — so shocking. However, this alternative is long overdue, based on the reality that there are always going to be some clients who have few or even no lashes at all, due to health issues such as thyroid conditions, infections, cancer treatments and more. But what does a no mascara makeup application look like? With so many lash growth and enhancement serums, conditioners, extensions, lifts, falsies and coatings on the market and used in the spa, makeup application has always emphasized the eyes — with specific focus on the lashes. So what happens when mascara is taken out of the equation? Nothing makes a woman feel more naked, right? Fear not, the mascara free look is a legitimate new alternative in beauty, even for clients with healthy lashes — and it actually eliminates a few common makeup hassles.

Techniques for a Gorgeous No Mascara Look Setting the mascara aside provides an opportunity to play up other features of the face. With the right technique, a no mascara makeup application can be bold and edgy.

The Biggest of Brows Bigger brows have been on the rise for the last few years. The bold brow could just be the new long lash. Brows tend to frame the eyes as lashes do, but when a bold brow is combined with a whole lotta lash, the face becomes a palette overly dominated by the eye area. Instead, skip the mascara and keep the brow game strong with a colored brow gel. Fine, feathery strokes create the illusion of additional hairs and leave the brows looking big and beautiful.

Amp up the Eye Color One of the biggest summertime trends accompanying a no mascara makeup application is bold color on the eyes. Bright colors draw attention to the colored portion of the eye and create the illusion of more depth. Select the best color by revisiting the color wheel! Any color opposite the eye color complements them best:

The Morning Butterfly Print

No matter how hard we work at perfecting and blending eye shadow, sometimes all it takes is that final touch of mascara to ruin the entire eye makeup application. Eye makeup application without mascara eliminates the chance of eye shadow or liner being ruined by the “butterfly print” from freshly painted lashes post mascara application.

Line ‘em Anyway

92

LNEonline.com

MESSES BE GONE! Getting creative with makeup without mascara has the added advantage of eliminating certain common makeup problems.

Who says that no mascara means no liner? I recommend doing just the opposite! One of the biggest secrets on the runway is creating a black smoky eye so dark and deep that no one even notices the models aren’t wearing mascara or lashes. To recreate this look, line the eye all over with a smudgy kohl pencil: lid, bottom lid, upper rim and water line. Blend with a small brush or q-tip for an eye catching sultry look.

This look can best be achieved by enhancing the liner with eye shadow. Never underestimate the power of a daring shape such as a wash of color all over the eye or a brightly colored wing!

something matte. Any matte lip color can be made shiny with the addition of a gloss on top. For a long-wear application, simply apply a bright matte lipstick, blot, lightly dust with powder and repeat. Finally, top with a clear or lightly colored gloss for a smooch that won’t stop!

The Mid-day Under Eye Smudge Effect

Pair it With a Bright Lip The obvious alternative to playing up the eyes is livening up the lips! Bright colors on the lips can create the effect of being polished even with minimal or no makeup on the eyes. Keep it fun and playful by going for a more glossy, boldly colored lip rather than

In the heat of mid-summer (or year round if your client’s skin is oily), it is not uncommon for people to walk inside from the outdoors looking as though they’ve sobbed through a sad movie, spent the last hour in a steam room or been sucker punched in the eye. Not pretty! No mascara means no midday smudge, and hence a more refreshed looking face even at the end of the day.

Pump up the Cheeks and Perfect That Skin Cream cheek color is hot this year and a great addition to a no mascara makeup application. A cream or liquid blush is gorgeous on the skin and can create that sought after “ethereal glowing from within” look. Playing up the skin is the perfect way to create a no makeup look that best accompanies a naked lash. It is essential that the blush blends in perfectly with the skin. The best way to do this is to mix a small amount of cream or liquid blush into a foundation, tinted moisturizer or liquid highlighter, and apply with a synthetic brush. Finish the application by stippling with a sponge over the area, which blends all three products together seamlessly!

Minimal Mascara For clients who have some lashes and want to experiment with less mascara, start with a clear mascara for definition and to keep lash hairs in place (run it over brows to keep unruly hairs from straying as well). Another way to start slowly is to keep the rest of the makeup minimal at first, which makes it less apparent that mascara is missing from the equation.

These protocols are the perfect enhancement to any mascara free look, and a great way to grow your income as an esthetics professional. 
