Jackie Suarez REAL Market Update - Brought to you by Jackie Suarez, Associate Broker What is the current real estate market climate in North Idaho? With shorter days and colder temperatures, our market has gone into a slight “hibernation” in the past month. Residential sales volume is down 32% compared to the previous 30-day period and a urry of late-season waterfront sales resulted in an 8% increase in median sales price. Investors with ready cash have been rewarded for their patience. Mortgage rates are in a freeze-thaw cycle. The rising cost of nancing inc increases pressure on borrowers with marginal buying power. In this environment, more sellers are willing to nance their property sales and reap their gains in the form of interest over time. In the past 30 days in Bonner and Boundary Counties, 10% of home sales were owner--nanced and cash buyers accounted for 47% of residential sales. * Land sellers adjusted prices in anticipation of winter and cash buyers responded. 55% of Bonner and Boundary County parcels sold in the past month were cash transactions. A shining star is the Schweitzer Mountain market where 28% of residential units are in escrow with a median asking price in the range of $2,500,000. Current offerings range in price from $315,000 for a 320 sq. ft. studio unit to $4,625,000 for a new four-bedroom home. Is now the right time for you to buy or sell? Lower inventory translates into less competition for sellers and serious buyers are looking for property in the winter. This may be the right time for you to recognize opportunity in our four-season market. Three tips for navigating this market: 1. Get advice from full-time real estate professionals who are experts in your local market. 2. Sellers: Price, timing and marketing are important. Focus on your presentation, be aware of other competing properties and be ready to negotiate. Monitor the market – owners with too much “blue sky” in their expectations might need to reconsider their approach. Bu 3. Buyers, get familiar with your target area and be ready to recognize a good buy. Make sure you’re on solid ground nancially. If you’re borrowing, have a lender with a proven track record working for you. Thoroughly inspect any property you decide to purchase.

Our market is constantly changing. What is important to me remains the same - God, Family and Relationships.

Best wishes to all for good health, peace and prosperity in the New Year! Contact Jackie Suarez, your local expert for help with your real estate needs.

lanning a wedding is an exhilarating journey filled with endless decisions, from selecting the perfect venue to choosing the color scheme and floral arrangements. Among these decisions, the rehearsal dinner often stands out as a heartfelt and intimate gathering that sets the tone for the big day. Hosting a rehearsal wedding dinner at home can be a charming and cost-effective option, offering a warm and personal touch to the celebration. From the guest list to menu, seating and entertainment, it’s time to create a memorable rehearsal dinner that you and your guests will cherish for years to come. Invitations and Guest List. The first step in hosting a successful rehearsal wedding dinner at home is to create a guest list and send out invitations. Typically, the guest list includes close family members, bridal party members, and a few close friends. Sending invitations well in advance will ensure that your guests have enough time to RSVP and mark their calendars. You can choose to send physical invitations, digital invites, or even a phone call, depending on your preference and budget. Décor and Theme. Set the tone for your rehearsal dinner with a carefully chosen theme and décor. Whether it’s a casual backyard barbecue or an elegant sit-down affair, the décor should reflect your personal style and the ambiance you want to create. Consider table centerpieces, linens, candles and flowers that harmonize with your theme and color palette. Utilize your home’s existing charm and features to enhance the overall atmosphere. Menu Selection. The menu is a critical component of any rehearsal dinner. You can choose to cook the meal yourself, enlist the help of family and friends, or hire a caterer for a stress-free experience. Ensure that your menu caters to the dietary preferences and restrictions of your guests. Incorporate a mix of appetizers, main courses, sides and desserts to provide a variety of options.

Determine the seating arrangement to ensure that your guests are comfortable and able to

interact with one another. Beverage Options. Selecting the right beverages is essential to complement your menu. Offering a range of options is a good practice. Include non-alcoholic choices like sparkling water, fruit juices and soft drinks, as well as alcoholic options such as wine, beer and a signature cocktail. Make sure to have a designated area for a bar or beverage station where guests can help themselves or be served by a bartender if you have one. Seating and Layout. Determine the seating arrangement to ensure that your guests are comfortable and able to interact with one another. Consider the layout of your home and how you can optimize the space for dining. If the weather permits, an outdoor setup can be a beautiful option. Use tables, chairs and linens that match your theme and create an inviting atmosphere. Entertainment. Entertainment can take various forms depending on the atmosphere you wish to create. Background music is a must, whether it’s a playlist of your favorite songs or a live acoustic 20

SANDPOINT LIVING LOCAL january/february 2024

performance. Additionally, you could incorporate games, a photo booth, or even a short video montage celebrating your journey as a couple. These elements can help break the ice and keep your guests engaged throughout the evening. Personal Touches. One of the advantages of hosting a rehearsal dinner at home is the opportunity to infuse personal touches into the event. Display photos of the couple throughout their relationship, create a memory wall, or set up a slideshow showcasing cherished moments. These details add sentimental value to the celebration and help tell your unique love story. Lighting and Ambiance. The right lighting can transform your home into a magical setting for the rehearsal dinner. Consider string lights, lanterns, candles and fairy lights to create a warm and inviting ambiance. Soft, dimmed lighting can enhance the overall mood and create a cozy atmosphere that encourages conversation and connection among your guests.

Rentals and Equipment. Depending on the size of your guest list and the space available, you may need to rent additional equipment such as tables, chairs, dinnerware and glassware. It’s crucial to plan for these rentals well in advance to ensure availability and to avoid any last-minute surprises. Weather Contingency. Hire a photographer or designate a friend or family member to take photographs throughout the evening. he turning point of Troy Holt’s career came several years ago when he was an assistant under legendary Bulldogs Head Football Coach Satini Puailoa. Troy always wondered why Coach Puailoa’s athletes admired him so greatly, always giving their best effort on the field. Then it hit him. “It came down to one thing,” Troy remembered. “He cared.” Witnessing the way that Puailoa genuinely invested in his players and connected with them on a personal level, Troy aimed to emulate that coaching and teaching style in everything he has done since. Troy graduated from Sandpoint High School in the early 1990s and went on to earn an education degree at University of Idaho. Teaching mostly physical education (PE) and health classes, Troy began his career in January 1997 at the elementary school level before moving to junior high after three years. At one point he taught computer and graphic arts, and then moved to a full-time PE position, which he has held to this day. Troy eventually became interested in speed and agility training, implementing these aspects into his classes.

Students want teachers and coaches who will be there for them, care about them, and acknowledge them when they succeed, and that is exactly what Troy aims to embody each day.

“I kind of became a ‘movement specialist,’” Troy explained. “Even today, I teach regular PE, but I don’t do any volleyball or sports or games. All I teach is movement-based class.”

When Troy is not teaching, coaching or cheering on his students at their extracurricular events, he enjoys taking his bass boat out on the lake to fish and spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren.

Troy has found his niche in movement training, and he is encouraged daily by the growth he sees in his students as they improve both physically and mentally.

Troy knows his career is nearing its final stages, but he is appreciating each moment and doing everything he can to give back to his students and his hometown.

One of Troy’s maxims is that “the day doesn’t end at 3:15,” and he has spent 66 total seasons—27 football, 26 basketball, seven

uring her time as a student at Sandpoint High School (SHS), Anna Woodward has learned some important life lessons about the value of facing challenges head on and working hard for what is hers. Anna not only participates in the Math Club and Business Professionals of America (BPA) at SHS, but she also helped establish a book club at the school, works 25 hours a week at Serv-A-Burger and helps her mom at the Farmer’s Market. “While food service jobs may not be particularly glamorous nor my intended career, I have grown to love my job there,” Anna explained. “I am a shift supervisor and able to work all positions.” “Both the Farmer’s Market and my job in food service gave me a greater admiration of hard work,” she continued. “I helped make the schedules for a few months and very quickly came to appreciate my manager more. Also, having money of my own certainly made me value it more.”

Anna possesses an even-keel, hardworking attitude that helps her to see the positives in life and stay down to earth. Many of Anna’s best high school memories come from opportunities she had to partner with her classmates, connecting with others and sharing her creativity. “Working with other students, especially in hands-on activities, like launching a two-liter rocket or decorating a skeleton for Día de los Muertos, makes for entertaining and lively learning,” Anna described. Anna has also learned the value of powering through her struggles and sticking with her academics when things are hard. “One of my favorite subjects is Spanish, but it does not come easily to me,” Anna examined. “I am now in Spanish IV, and Mrs. Imaz has taught

me since my second year of the language. Her commitment to helping me both with Spanish and personally has helped me grow into a more persistent person. I am forever grateful to her.” Outside of school, two of Anna’s passions are books and animals, both of which she owns many of. Her bookshelf is overflowing, and “the animals at my house are probably in similar numbers,” she added. A “sanctuary” is what she calls her home, which houses numerous ducks, including two sister geese named Banana and Ryan that Anna helped raise from the time they were born. Overall, Anna appreciates Bonner County, and she hopes to return one day if she can. She plans to pursue either finance or statistics after she graduates, although she is still uncertain about a specific career. One thing is for certain, however. Wherever she goes and whatever she does, Anna will always carry her conscientious, diligent spirit with her.

or the last several years, Sandpoint High School (SHS) senior Lucca Grillo has often found himself on the other side of publications such as this one. As the editor-in-chief of Monticola, the SHS school yearbook, and a talented freelance photographer and videographer, Lucca’s passion is capturing and telling the stories of others. “I spend a lot of time inside and outside of school working on making the best yearbook possible for the students receiving it at the end of the year,” Lucca emphasized. This time, however, it is Lucca’s turn to be on the other side of the lens, so to speak. Lucca has been Monticola’s editor-in-chief for the past two years, although he defers much of the credit to the “fantastic team of editors [he has] gotten to work with during [his] tenure.” The editorial team, which consists of seven students and faculty advisor Mindy Roget, collaboratively works together to lead a diverse group of student workers in the largescale, year-long project of putting together a yearbook. “Whether we’re designing, copywriting, or capturing photography, seeing everything and everyone come together to create under a unified vision is always exciting,” Lucca explained.

Deliveries Available

Lucca’s portfolio has expanded outside of SHS in recent years as well. He has worked on multimedia projects for Cedar Hills Church and has begun to expand into freelance work as well. “I’ve grown a lot over the last four years because of the myriad of opportunities I’ve gotten to create digital media,” Lucca described. “Through Monticola, Cedar Hills, and freelance jobs, I have gained experience with many different projects and mediums outside transitional photography.”

In addition to honing his photographic and cinematic skills, Lucca also appreciates the opportunities he has had to improve as a leader, noting that his dad has played a big role in modeling a leadership style that he tries to replicate. When he isn’t capturing photos or videos, some of Lucca’s hobbies include playing music, practicing cardistry, and perfecting his Onewheel skills. He also enjoys the diversity in weather and landscape that Sandpoint has to offer and all the outdoor activities that the terrain allows for. “Having Lake Pend Oreille and the mountains so close to each other is pretty awesome,” Lucca added. Although Lucca is undecided about his exact plans after he graduates this spring, he knows that he wants to continue pursuing his passion for photo, video, and graphic design. janurary/february 2024 SANDPOINT LIVING LOCAL

GRATITUDE Gala Unsung Heroes of the Heart Ball by DAMEN RODRIGUEZ

36

SANDPOINT LIVING LOCAL january/february 2024

n In the serene embrace of Sandpoint, where the whispers of winter winds entwine with mountain secrets, a saga of compassionate resurgence unfolds. The Heart Ball, an annual affair orchestrated by the Bonner General Health Foundation, is more than a gathering; it’s a tapestry woven with threads of history, dedication, and a commitment that resonates with Sandpoint’s very essence. Born in 2008, the Heart Ball isn’t just an event—it’s a rendezvous where generosity takes center stage. Picture a canvas of hope painted by the skilled hands of the Bonner General Health Foundation Board of Trustees. Their mission? Not merely fundraising but composing a melody that enriches services, renovates, and acquires crucial equipment for Bonner General Health (BGH). This soirée is more than revelry; it’s a cornerstone of community care, where more than 300 attendees become honored guests, partaking in a banquet where compassion is the main course, and generosity lingers like a satisfying dessert. Past Heart Balls have been architects of change, channeling proceeds to reshape Bonner General Health’s corridors, transforming emergency departments and fortifying trauma radiology. As the Heart Ball spreads its wings in 2024, a profound dedication steals the spotlight—Jack Parker, a luminary etched in BGH’s narrative. Jack, a visionary on the original Board of Directors, wasn’t just a health care steward; he believed in the synergy of education and health as the foundation of community success. In 1964, facing financial cliffs, Jack and his allies embarked on a determined journey. Their destination? A new hospital for Sandpoint.

Securing an $800,000 grant through the Hill-Burton Act, they unlocked the doors of possibility. The hospital, rising like a phoenix from partial construction and naval floatation, opened in 1973—a testament to Jack’s unwavering dedication. For five decades, his baton conducted the melody of service on the Board of Directors. A charter member of the Rotary Club of Sandpoint, his words echoed wisdom: “If you take, you must give back.” Dedicating Heart Ball 2024 to Jack Parker is homage to a conductor whose foresight, generosity and wisdom resonate through grateful hearts. The Heart Ball’s focus extends beyond celebration—it embraces the battle against cancer in 2024. Dedicated to Jack Parker’s legacy, its mission is clear: acquiring a new endoscope. In the community’s fight against cancer, early detection is key. The endoscope, a versatile instrument, steps into the spotlight. It transcends colonoscopies, illuminating both men and women from age 45—an essential step in early colon cancer detection. Its melody doesn’t cease there; it resonates in detecting esophagus and stomach cancers, uncovering polyps, tumors, inflammation, ulcers, and various medical nuances. More than a diagnostic tool, it’s a virtuoso playing a pivotal role in BGH departments and surgeries. Navigating cancer detection with a lone endoscope shared among departments, BGH’s dedication to acquiring a second heralds a transformative crescendo. This isn’t an encore; it’s a promise of amplified efficiency. With two instruments in tandem, BGH staff can see and screen more community members while the other endoscope dances in another department—a synchronous healing across the hospital. It’s not just a logistical upgrade; it’s a promise of enhanced patient care janurary/february 2024 SANDPOINT LIVING LOCAL

and improved outcomes. Reduced wait times become staccato beats in a quicker, more responsive health care system. Ultimately, lives saved become the soul-stirring melody resonating through grateful families’ heartbeats. The Heart Ball, a collective opus of compassion, extends gratitude to unsung heroes—sponsors, donors and volunteers. In Keely Gray and Justin Dick’s words, “The success of the BGH Foundation and our Heart Ball is wholly related to our Foundation Trustees, Advisory Council, donors, sponsors, volunteers, and the BGH staff.” Every penny raised becomes a note in an altruistic composition, with no administrative costs dimming the brilliance of their tune. Together, they compose a symphony resonating beyond BGH’s walls, fortifying the very fabric of the Sandpoint community. The Heart Ball isn’t just an event; it’s a testament to collective benevolence, a resounding proclamation that health care is a language uniting us all. The new endoscope isn’t a practical upgrade; it’s a prologue to hope in the battle against cancer. Its dual role in detecting colon, esophagus and stomach cancers makes it a sentinel against the shadows of disease. In a community where a first colonoscopy age is 45 for both genders, it becomes invaluable for early detection—a linchpin in the overarching strategy against cancer. Beyond diagnostics, it symbolizes a commitment to proactive health care, emphasizing prevention and early intervention. In the cancer care narrative, it becomes a protagonist, a guardian of well-being, and a testament to the Heart

38

SANDPOINT LIVING LOCAL january/february 2024

Ball’s evolving role as a catalyst for positive change. As the second endoscope readies to join BGH’s medical orchestra, anticipation for enhanced efficiency reverberates. With one endoscope shared among departments, the addition of a second promises to harmonize the screening process— reducing wait times, increasing accessibility, and echoing the Heart Ball’s commitment to community welfare. This operational upgrade isn’t just logistical; it’s a commitment to swift and precise community care, a melody resonating with the Heart Ball’s ethos. The Heart Ball, with its rich history, dedication to Jack Parker’s legacy, and transformative initiatives like the new endoscope, embodies Sandpoint’s spirit. It’s a community giving back, acknowledging the inseparable connection between education, health care and prosperity. To sponsors, donors, volunteers, and every Bonner General Health community member, a resounding thank you. Your contributions create a legacy, setting the stage for a thriving Sandpoint heartbeat—a rhythm composed of compassion, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to all well-being. The 2024 Heart Ball takes place February 3 at the Bonner County Fairgrounds. For additional details, and to purchase tickets, visit BonnerGeneral.org/foundation/heart-ball.

ocated on the Cedar Street Bridge, Creations has served as an artistic community hub since 2010 and continues to attract a great number of visitors, which includes children, teens and parents, special needs, a variety of groups and clubs, and everything in between. You name the gathering; Creations has probably provided the need somehow in their welcoming space! Six years after founder Shery Meekins launched Creations, it already had more than 30,000 people visiting it each year. This increase came along with the addition of becoming a 501c3, partnering with Experience Works (a job skill program) to host Creations’ art workshops, as well as adding supportive board members and a grant writer. All visitors and locals can come to Creations anytime and enjoy the Drop-in Art Studio Stem Discovery Play—stocked full of every kind of crafting tool to paint and create art—between 10am to 6pm, seven days a week. The Discovery Play center is the perfect place to learn and an outlet for the young ones to expend their energy. Creations provides space for other organizations to teach youth STEM workshops, including Lake Pend Oreille Waterkeepers, Suzuki Strings Music, 4-H, and more!

This community hub has also generated many connections that are bridging a way for Creations to help beyond the Cedar Bridge site. Though Creations has already begun expanding into the community using its art skills, supplies and workshops to support local schools, nonprofits, foster care programs, senior and teen centers, and businesses, their next big step will be to execute their plan to build a science museum that provides hands-on learning through the help of partnering with local businesses and nonprofits. An Unparalleled Woodland Waterfront Wedding Experience

are so grateful and honored each and every time a couple chooses us to be a part of such an incredible moment in their lives. They become part of our story, our home and our family.”

Her daughter, Susan Radezky, came on board almost three years ago. Her background in recreation and resort management, combined with her experience at a 5 Diamond historic hotel as concierge supervisor, brings the venue to a whole new level of hospitality. “It is a joy and privilege to be able to work side by side as a mother/daughter team,” Peggy shares. “We share a passion for creating unforgettable moments for our couples and their loved ones. It is a heartfelt collaboration that combines family, business and love.”

The idea of Grand Pend Oreille Weddings was inspired more than a decade ago after Peggy’s son Rocky was married on their family property. “The response from the families and friends who attended was overwhelming about the beauty of the property for such a special event,” Peggy remembers. It grew from starting as a side business during the summer months to a full-time wedding venue open from mid-April to mid-October. “My love of working with people makes this a perfect fit for my personality. I love making people happy, seeing families and friends together, and welcoming people from all over the globe is something I truly enjoy,” Peggy says.

Their husbands also play a big part in grounds maintenance and upgrades, while Susan’s girls love to help set up and see the bride in her gorgeous dress on the big day. “Being a family affair is a big part of the authentic atmosphere we bring to the wedding experience—our goal is to make it feel like home for our couples,” Susan emphasizes. “We

in this beautiful corner of the world, adding that she couldn’t imagine a better place to raise their family. “Being on the waterfront is so special, and I try not to ever take it for granted,” Peggy states. Grand Pend Oreille Weddings sits on the Pend Oreille River shoreline in Newport, Washington, with more than 1,000 feet of pristine woodland waterfront bliss. It’s a perfect mix of forest, open lawn space, and gorgeous waterfront with breathtaking mountain views—offering a serene peace and tranquility. They offer their couples unrivaled hospitality, the best online planning tools available, adventure session opportunities by land, water and air, the chance to visit the venue multiple times throughout planning stages and an invitation to come back and relive the moment each year after, and much more. This is truly what Pacific Northwest wedding dreams are made of! “With all of the natural beauty in, on, and surrounding our venue, there’s not a lot you need to do to make it beautiful ... it already is! We love hearing from guests that they didn’t know that places like this still exist!” notes Peggy. Their Traditional Experience has a maximum of 150 guests; the Micro Experience has a maximum of 50; and their Minimony Experience has a maximum of 10. They have had couples book from Ireland, Hawaii, North Carolina, Texas, California and New York, and guests traveling from as far away as Sweden, New Zealand and Africa! “I can honestly say I still tear up at each wedding once the ceremony begins. So much thought and preparation has gone into making this day memorable, and we love being part of that. It’s truly an honor when a couple chooses our venue for the wedding day, and we treat it as such,” Peggy shares. “Working with other professionals in the wedding industry is also a privilege. Partnering with those who have the same passion to make a couple’s dream come true is an honor we don’t take for granted.” At Grand Pend Oreille, you’ll find your journey to “I do” flows like the river; the mountains bear witness to your love story; and your invitation to come back and relive the moment stands the test of time. It’s time to create a honeymoon that dreams are made of.

A

honeymoon is a cherished rite of passage for newlyweds; a time to revel in the joy of marriage and create unforgettable memories together. It's a journey that marks the beginning of a lifelong adventure. To ensure your honeymoon is nothing short of perfect, careful planning and selecting the ideal destination are paramount. It’s time to create a honeymoon that dreams are made of. Planning your honeymoon should ideally begin well before your wedding day. By giving yourself ample time, you can avoid the stress that often accompanies last-minute preparations. Determine your budget for the honeymoon. Knowing your financial limits will help you narrow down your options and plan accordingly. Decide when you want to go on your honeymoon. Some couples choose to depart immediately after the wedding, while others opt for a delayed honeymoon. Your choice will impact the destinations available to you. Make a list of what you both want from the honeymoon. Is it relaxation on a pristine beach, cultural exploration, adventure, or a combination of these? Prioritizing your desires will help you choose a destination that caters to your interests. Your honeymoon budget is a crucial aspect of planning, as it will dictate the scope of your trip. Allocate funds by dividing your budget into categories like transportation, accommodation, activities, meals, and miscellaneous expenses. This will help you keep track of your spending. All-inclusive resorts and packages can be costeffective, as they often cover accommodations,

meals and activities in one upfront price. If you’re concerned about the cost, consider setting up a honeymoon fund where guests can contribute instead of traditional wedding gifts. Monitor currency exchange rates if you’re traveling internationally, keep an eye on currency exchange rates, and consider exchanging money in advance to get the best rates. Once you've outlined your preferences and constraints, it's time to seek inspiration for your dream honeymoon. Consult travel magazines and websites, such as TripAdvisor, Travel + Leisure, and Lonely Planet, which often feature honeymoon destinations, providing valuable insights and ideas. Reach out to friends and family who have been on memorable honeymoons. They can offer personal recommendations and tips based on their experiences. If you prefer a stressfree planning process, consider enlisting the help of a travel agent. They can suggest destinations, handle bookings, and even create personalized itineraries.

Choosing the perfect honeymoon destination is a pivotal step in the planning process. Several factors should influence your decision. Consider your shared interests and hobbies. Are you both beach lovers, adventure seekers, history buffs, or foodies? Select a destination that aligns with your passions. Research the climate and seasons of potential destinations, and be sure to choose a time of year that suits your preferences, whether it's a tropical escape, a winter wonderland, or a springtime adventure. Keep an eye on any travel restrictions, visa requirements, or health and safety concerns related to your chosen destination, and stay informed about the latest updates and regulations. The best honeymoons are tailored to the couple's unique tastes and preferences. To customize your trip for a truly memorable experience, be sure to select your accommodations wisely. Whether you opt for a luxury resort, a charming boutique hotel or a cozy Airbnb, choose accommodations that reflect your style and comfort level.

You can embark on a journey that not only celebrates your love but also sets the stage for a lifelong adventure together.

Consider surprise activities or romantic gestures during your trip. This could be a couple’s spa day, a private sunset dinner on the beach or a hot air balloon ride at sunrise. Plan a loose itinerary that includes must-see attractions and activities but also leaves room for spontaneity. The balance between structure and flexibility is key. Invest in a good camera or hire a professional photographer to capture the special moments of your honeymoon. These photos will be cherished mementos for years to come. As your honeymoon approaches, pay careful consideration when packing, especially if you're traveling to a destination with specific weather conditions or cultural norms. Check the weather and pack accordingly, including appropriate clothing for different activities and temperatures. Mix and match clothing items to create multiple outfits. Ensure you have all necessary travel documents, including passports, visas and travel insurance. Make copies of these documents in case of loss or theft. And don't forget to pack essentials like medication, toiletries, chargers and travel adapters. Try to pack efficiently to avoid excess baggage fees and the hassle of carrying heavy bags. A honeymoon is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and planning it meticulously is key to creating lasting memories. With careful planning and a thoughtful approach, you can embark on a journey that not only celebrates your love but also sets the stage for a lifelong adventure together. So, start early, seek inspiration, and create a honeymoon that reflects your unique love story.

A

s the calendar turns a fresh page and the promise of a new year beckons, it’s the perfect time to embark on a journey of self-improvement. Year after year, many of us set ambitious resolutions, and at the top of the list, more often than not, is a commitment to better health. It’s time to make your health a priority, from setting realistic goals to adopting sustainable habits and seeking professional guidance. It’s a new year and time for a new you! The foundation of any successful health journey begins with setting clear and realistic goals. It’s easy to get carried away with grandiose resolutions like losing 50 pounds in a month or completely eliminating your favorite indulgence. However, such lofty ambitions can often lead to disappointment and frustration. Instead, start by identifying specific, attainable objectives that align with your long-term vision for a healthier you. For instance, if your ultimate goal is to lead a more active lifestyle, consider setting a realistic target like walking for 30 minutes a day or hitting the gym three times a week. These smaller milestones will not only boost your confidence but also make it easier to track your progress. The key to lasting change lies in creating a sustainable routine. It’s tempting to make drastic changes in January, but consistency is what truly counts. Whether it’s adopting a new workout regimen, overhauling your diet, or dedicating time to meditation and selfcare, the key is to make these changes a part of your daily life. Start by incorporating one new habit at a time. This gradual approach makes it easier for your body and mind to adapt, increasing the chances of long-term success. Remember, the new year isn’t just about quick fixes; it’s about building a healthier, more fulfilling life.

Nutrition is a cornerstone of good health, and the new year is an ideal time to reevaluate your eating habits. Instead of fad diets or extreme restrictions, focus on mindful eating. This means paying attention to what you eat, savoring each bite, and making conscious choices. Consider incorporating more whole foods into your diet, such as fruits, vegetables, lean proteins and whole grains. Keep in mind that small changes can yield big results. Swap sugary drinks for water, reduce portion sizes, and limit processed foods. Remember, it’s about progress, not perfection. In the pursuit of physical health, it’s essential not to neglect your mental well-being. Stress, anxiety and burnout can take a toll on your overall health, so make mental wellness a priority this year. Practice stress-reduction techniques like meditation, yoga or deep breathing exercises. These practices can help you find balance in your life and cope with the challenges that may arise. Don’t hesitate to seek professional help if you’re struggling with your mental health. A therapist or counselor can provide valuable support and guidance as you navigate life’s ups and downs. Remember, taking care of your mind is just as important as taking care of your body. Exercise is a fundamental component of a healthy lifestyle. Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or new to physical activity, finding a fitness routine that suits your interests and goals is crucial. Start by exploring different activities until you discover something you genuinely enjoy.

Setting short-term fitness goals can also help keep you motivated. Consider signing up for a 5k run, a dance class or a weekly hiking group. Having an event or goal to work toward can make exercising more enjoyable and purposeful.

is a step closer to becoming the best version of yourself. Whether it’s fitting into those jeans you haven’t worn in years, achieving a personal best in the gym, or simply feeling more energetic, take a moment to acknowledge and appreciate your accomplishments.

Embarking on a health journey is often more successful when you have a support system in place. Share your goals with friends and family who can offer encouragement and accountability. Sometimes, achieving your health goals may require professional guidance. Consider partnering with a registered dietitian, personal trainer or physical therapist who can tailor their expertise to your specific needs.

f you want to make a big purchase, such as a new car or a piece of property, or you were faced with a large, unexpected expense, such as a major home or auto repair, would you have the funds readily available? If not, you might look at what may be your biggest pool of money—your 401(k) or IRA. But should you tap into these accounts well before you retire?

contributions—but not earnings—at any time, for any purpose, without incurring penalties. Given these issues, how can you avoid dipping into your retirement accounts when you’re faced with a financial need?

One possibility is to take out a loan from your 401(k). Unlike a 401(k) withdrawal, a loan is neither taxable nor subject to tax penalties. Also, the interest you pay on a 401(k) loan goes back into your account. Still, a 401(k) loan has its drawbacks. If you leave your job, you’ll likely have to repay the loan in a short period of time, and if you don’t have all the money to repay it, the loan will be considered in default, so you’ll owe taxes and the 10 percent penalty if you’re younger than 59 ½. But even if you don’t leave your job and you do repay the loan, you’ll still have taken away money that could have potentially kept growing within your tax-deferred account. As mentioned above, as your money compounds, you’ll want to minimize disruptions.

Edward Jones - It’s Time for Investing Maybe not—and here’s why:

• Less money in retirement - The more money you invest in your retirement accounts, and the longer you keep it invested, the more you’ll probably have when you need it most—when you’re retired. Consequently, taking out sizable amounts from these accounts before you retire could be costly, as it would disrupt the benefits of compounding that can be achieved by holding investments for the long term.

money you take out from your traditional IRA and 401(k) is taxable in the year of withdrawal. So, if you withdraw a significant amount of money at once from your traditional IRA or 401(k), you could be pushed into a higher tax bracket, at least for one year.

Penalty-free withdrawals can be made for several reasons, including for education and medical expenses, first-time purchase of a home (up to $10,000), after the birth or adoption of a child (up to $5,000) and more (see IRS.gov/taxtopics/ tc557). Building an emergency fund is another way to gain access to cash. Such a fund should contain at least six months’ worth of living expenses, with the money kept in a liquid, low-risk account. It can take time to build a fund of this size, so it’s never too soon to start putting away money for it. To avoid the temptation of dipping into your emergency fund, you’d ideally keep this fund separate from your daily spending accounts. Explore all your options before tapping into your IRA or 401(k) early. Keeping these accounts intact as long as possible is one of the best moves you can make to help build your future retirement income.

Cervical Cancer Awareness Month a r t i c l e p r o v i d e d b y B O N N E R G E N E R A L H E A LT H

Screening and education can make all the difference

I

n recognition of Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, we asked Bonner General Family Practice Provider Dr. Tessa Reinke to share her expertise on this invasive yet preventable disease.

Dr. Reinke, tell us about cervical cancer and its cause. Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women worldwide, but the majority of those cases happen in resourcelimited settings. In parts of Africa and Central America, cervical cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death in women. The human papillomavirus (HPV) is a causative agent in the vast majority (99.7 percent) of all invasive cervical cancers. Most sexually active women (estimated 70 to 80 percent) will have had a genital infection with HPV before the age of 50, but thankfully, most of these are brief, and the body clears the infection. The big concern comes when the virus is persistently present, and the body can’t clear it. This viral persistence is what is associated with the development of cancer over the years. The time from initial infection to invasive cancer, on average, is about 15 years, although the timeline can be much faster. There is a lot of time when the virus is detectable and causes cells to be abnormal on the cervix before the abnormalities become actual cervical cancer. The HPV virus can also cause other types of genital area cancers, including vaginal and penile cancers, as well as genital warts. What are the best preventative measures for women to decrease their risk of cervical cancer? Since HPV primarily causes cervical cancer, the first layer of protection we have is being vaccinated with the HPV vaccine prior to first sexual contact. The vaccine helps to establish immunity to the most oncogenic (cancer-causing) HPV subtypes and makes it

66 66

SANDPOINT LIVING LOCAL january/february 2024

easier for the body to clear the virus when it is exposed and prevent persistent infection. Since HPV is a sexually transmitted virus, other preventive measures include delaying sex and limiting the number of sexual partners. Along the same line, avoiding other sexually transmitted infections is an essential preventive factor, since co-infection with some STIs appears to be associated with a higher risk of HPV persistence. Also, there is a recent study that showed cigarette smoking is correlated with an increased risk of cervical cancer development, although the reason for this has not been established. Regular screening is also an important prevention method. Since cervical cancer takes so long to develop, if we screen regularly, we can detect and treat a persistent HPV infection before it becomes actual cancer. At what age should women begin cervical cancer screenings? Additionally, is there an age you no longer need to worry about screening? The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends starting cervical cancer screening at age 21, and it’s generally accepted that the screenings can end after age 65. However, if the individual is healthy and has a longer-than-average life expectancy and new risk factors, like a new sexual partner, it may be prudent to continue screening after age 65. Talk with your Primary Care Provider about cervical cancer screening and when you should start. For a complete list of services offered by Bonner General Health, visit BonnerGeneral.org.

EMPOWERING WOMEN

Overcoming urinary incontinence with HIFEM treatments b y B R I W I L L I A M S , W H N P- B C , R E F I N E D A E ST H E T I CS M E D S PA , P L LC

U

rinary incontinence, though often considered a taboo topic, affects millions of women worldwide. It is a condition characterized by the involuntary loss of urine, causing embarrassment and distress. However, there is hope. Thanks to advances in medical technology, highintensity focused electromagnetic (HIFEM) treatments have emerged as a game-changer in addressing urinary incontinence. Let’s explore the prevalence of urinary incontinence among women and how HIFEM treatments can provide a newfound sense of confidence and freedom. Understanding the Prevalence of Urinary Incontinence: Urinary incontinence is more common than one might think, affecting women of all ages. According to studies, approximately 25 to 45 percent of women experience urinary incontinence at some point in their lives, and up to 85 percent of women postpartum. It can be caused by various factors, including pregnancy, childbirth, menopause, obesity and aging. Despite its prevalence, many women suffer in silence, unaware of the available solutions. HIFEM Treatments, A Non-Invasive Solution: High-intensity focused electromagnetic technology has revolutionized the treatment of urinary incontinence. This non-invasive procedure uses focused electromagnetic energy to stimulate and strengthen the muscles responsible for bladder control. By targeting the pelvic floor muscles, HIFEM treatments effectively restore muscle tone, reducing or eliminating urinary incontinence. How HIFEM Treatments Work: During a HIFEM treatment session, a specialized device is used to deliver electromagnetic pulses to the pelvic floor muscles. These pulses induce deep and intense muscle contractions, far beyond what can be achieved through regular exercise.

The contractions help to strengthen and rejuvenate the weakened muscles, improving bladder control and reducing leakage. The Benefits of HIFEM Treatments: 1. Non-Invasive and Painless: HIFEM treatments are non-surgical, non-invasive, and require no downtime. The procedure is painless, with most patients describing it as a comfortable and tolerable experience. 2. High Success Rates: Clinical studies have shown that HIFEM treatments can significantly improve urinary incontinence symptoms. Many women have reported a reduction in leakage episodes and an improvement in overall bladder control after just a few sessions. 3. Quick and Convenient: Each HIFEM treatment session typically lasts around 30 minutes, making it easy to fit into a busy schedule. With no recovery time required, women can resume their daily activities immediately after the procedure. 4. Long-lasting Results: The benefits of HIFEM treatments are not temporary. Continued improvement can be seen even months after completing the recommended treatment sessions. Maintenance sessions may be advised to ensure sustained results. Urinary incontinence is an issue that affects countless women, often impacting their quality of life. However, with the advent of HIFEM treatments, a new era of hope and empowerment has emerged. If you or someone you know is struggling with this condition, consider exploring the possibilities of HIFEM treatments and regain control over your life. Remember, you deserve to live free from the limitations of urinary incontinence.

Sustaining Your Healthy New Year’s

RESOLUTION PRACTICAL TIPS FOR REALISTIC AND LASTING SUCCESS

T

o achieve and sustain a healthy New Year’s resolution, it’s crucial to set realistic and specific goals. Start by identifying a clear objective that aligns with your values and priorities. Whether it’s improving your fitness, eating habits, or reducing stress, break down your goal into smaller, manageable steps. For example, if your resolution is to exercise more, commit to working out three times a week initially, gradually increasing the frequency. Consistency is key. Create a schedule and stick to it, but be flexible enough to adapt when life throws curveballs. Tracking your progress can also provide motivation. Keep a journal or use a tracking app to record your workouts, meals, or other relevant data. Celebrate your milestones, no matter how small, to stay motivated and reinforce positive behaviors. Surround yourself with support. Share your resolution with friends or family who can encourage you and hold you accountable. Consider seeking professional guidance if your goal requires specialized knowledge, such as a registered dietitian or personal trainer. Most importantly, be kind to yourself. Setbacks are a natural part of any journey, so don’t be discouraged by occasional slipups. Learn from them and use them as opportunities for growth. With patience, determination and a realistic approach, you can achieve and maintain your healthy goals throughout the year.

LIGHT UP YOUR WEDDING

photos

Skin Rejuvenation: The Foundation of Bridal Beauty Healthy, glowing skin is the canvas upon which all other wedding day beauty enhancements are built. To achieve that coveted bridal glow, consider treatments such as facials, chemical peels and microdermabrasion. Regular facials in the months leading up to your wedding can work wonders. They cleanse, exfoliate and hydrate your skin, leaving it looking refreshed and radiant. For a deeper skin renewal, chemical peels are an option, as they remove the outer layer of skin, reducing fine lines and wrinkles, and uneven pigmentation. Opt for a gentle peel to avoid excessive downtime. If you’re seeking a quick rejuvenation, microdermabrasion, a noninvasive procedure that exfoliates the skin, can improve its texture and tone. Botox and Dermal Fillers: A Youthful Boost If you’re looking to smooth out wrinkles and add volume to certain areas of your face, Botox and dermal fillers can be your best friends. These non-surgical treatments can help you achieve a youthful, refreshed appearance without the need for invasive surgery. Consider them for forehead lines and crow’s feet, where Botox injections can soften these lines, giving you a more youthful and relaxed look. Dermal fillers, on the other hand, can plump up your lips for that perfect pout. They can also enhance your cheekbones, giving your face a more defined, sculpted appearance. The results are natural looking and can last for several months, making them ideal for pre-wedding preparations. Body Sculpting: Achieve Your Dream Silhouette A wedding gown can accentuate your figure, but a little extra help in the form of body sculpting can ensure you feel confident and beautiful on your big day. Non-surgical fat reduction treatments like CoolSculpting and SculpSure can target stubborn areas of fat, helping you achieve your dream silhouette. These procedures are safe and effective, and they require minimal downtime. Whether you’re looking to slim down your waistline, thighs or arms, these treatments can be customized to address your specific concerns. It’s essential to consult with a qualified practitioner to determine the best approach for your needs. Teeth Whitening: Your Smile, Your Confidence Your smile is one of your most powerful assets on your wedding day. It’s the expression of your happiness and love, and it deserves to shine as brightly as possible. Consider professional teeth whitening treatments to ensure your smile is as radiant as an be. While over-the-counter whitening products are available, professional treatments performed by a dentist can deliver quicker and more dramatic results. Teeth whitening can lift years of stains and discoloration, leaving you with a dazzling smile that will light up your wedding photos. Start this process well in advance to ensure your teeth are at their brightest on the big day. janurary/february 2024 SANDPOINT LIVING LOCAL 73

Hair Transformations: Locks that Dazzle Your hair is your crowning glory, and it deserves special attention as you prepare for your wedding. Schedule a consultation with a skilled hairstylist who can recommend treatments and styles that will complement your overall look. Consider hair extensions if you want to add length or volume for a more dramatic hairstyle. These extensions can be seamlessly integrated into your natural hair for a stunning effect. If you’re dealing with frizz or unruly hair, a professional keratin treatment can work wonders, leaving your locks smooth and manageable. Lastly, don’t forget to book a trial session for your wedding hairstyle to ensure it’s exactly what you envisioned. Nail Care: Polished to Perfection While your hands and nails might not be the first thing people notice, they’ll still be on display during the ring exchange and countless photos. Make sure your nails are polished to perfection with regular manicures in the weeks leading up to your wedding. Consider classic neutral shades that complement your overall bridal look. If you want a touch of glamor, opt for a subtle shimmer or glitter accent. Gel manicures can provide long-lasting results, ensuring your nails look flawless throughout the festivities.

Mind and Body Wellness: Inner Beauty Shines Through Beauty treatments aren’t just about external transformation; they should also focus on your well-being. In the hectic months leading up to your wedding, it’s crucial to take time for self-care and relaxation. Consider incorporating mindfulness practices like meditation and yoga into your routine to reduce stress and boost your inner radiance. Additionally, a healthy diet and regular exercise can enhance your physical and mental well-being, contributing to a more vibrant, confident you on your wedding day. As you embark on this exciting journey, remember that the ultimate goal of pre-wedding aesthetic treatments is to enhance your natural beauty and ensure you radiate confidence as you walk down the aisle. 74

since 2005 in diverse areas of medicine—neurology, intensive care, pre- and post-surgery, nephrology, internal medicine, urgent care, and wellness and aesthetic medicine. He joined the practice in 2017, becoming Signature Aesthetics’ medical director in 2021. As a nurse practitioner, Graham is able to diagnose, treat and prescribe independently in the state of Idaho. His diverse medical background working in various medical fields allows him to create personal and individualized treatment plans with his patients. Examples of treatments he performs, in addition to aesthetic treatments, are Botox for migraines, bioidentical hormone replacement, and PRP joint injections for arthritic joints. Signature Aesthetics specializes in neurotoxins, dermal fillers, body contouring, skin rejuvenation, lasers, vascular treatments, PRP treatments, skin peels, bioidentical hormone replacement, and medical weight loss. You can visit their website to explore all of the services and techniques they offer. What truly sets Signature Aesthetics apart is not only Nancy and Graham’s experience in the field, and the holistic approach they take when treating their patients; add in their state-of-the-art equipment and the fact that they and their clinicians are always staying current with evolving medical procedures, techniques and education. As the practice has continued to grow over the last decade, so has the need for larger accommodations for their expanding clientele. Nancy and Graham are elated to share that Signature Aesthetics is making a new home in the

building they purchased at 1202 North Division Avenue. The new office location provides better accessibility for clients—including more parking! The patient waiting area is now larger, allowing the accommodation of more clients, as well as making the check-in/check-out process seamless. In addition, their treatment rooms will provide a very peaceful and relaxing atmosphere as they are remodeled to better suit Signature Aesthetics’ services that they provide. “We strive to address every patient’s unique health and wellness goals, giving us the opportunity to have a positive impact on people’s lives in a meaningful and fulfilling way,” Graham explains. “Whether that’s improving someone’s confidence with prescription skin care or treating a patient’s chronic migraines with neurotoxin, our patients often tell us that we have given them their life back.” As Sandpoint natives, Nancy and Graham give back to this beautiful place they call home. Signature Aesthetics has been a proud sponsor of many local events and supports groups like the local 4-H group, the Festival at Sandpoint, Sandpoint High School boys’ basketball, and many others. Internationally, Nancy has traveled overseas to aid the S.M.I.L.E. organization in Africa, which helps provide dental care for underserved people. “We are so excited for this new and thrilling chapter with the practice!” Nancy smiles. She invites you to follow Signature Aesthetics on Instagram and Facebook, where you can stay up to date with the practice, including monthly specials and events.

Many wineries have great restaurants to try, and downtown has an eclectic dining scene. There is such a variety of places to dine in the Walla Walla area. Many wineries have great restaurants to try, and downtown has an eclectic dining scene. Brasserie Four is a classic French-style country restaurant with simple food that is so satisfying. Make sure to try the PommesFrites with mayo. It is hard to believe French fries can taste so good. The Vichyssoise, a potato leek soup, is a showstopper—especially when sopped up with a slice of baguette and paired with a good glass of white wine. Each day there are daily specials that highlight fresh local ingredients such as the recent heirloom tomato salad. The Waterbrook Winery and Tasting Room is outside of town and makes a good spot for lunch and touring the other wineries in the area. Chef Sarah Perry works her magic incorporating farm fresh produce from the on-site garden and local farms into her cuisine. Try the Chef ’s Board and other shareables with a flight of wine that allows guests to experience different flavor profiles. The menu also offers a flight of house-made sauces, which is a nice addition to any of the sides.

Walkable downtown Walla Walla has plenty of shops and boutiques to explore. Don’t miss the Showroom at Colville, which is like stepping into foodie heaven. Marguerite offers a variety of gourmet foods from France and Italy. Cookbooks and home décor round out the offerings. Stop for a tasting at the Bergevin Lane Vineyards tasting room to try any of the Passion Project Collection, a limited case production of small-batch wines. These big, bold reds have a cult following. Insider Tip: In the alley behind the showroom is a speakeasy culinary shop. Look for the door, as there is no sign for Foodscape, which offers fresh local produce, seafood, cheese, charcuterie and gourmet groceries. For those seeking outdoor adventure, head out to Ski Bluewood, a popular ski and snowboard resort about an hour from Walla Walla that has undergone recent updates. Waitsburg and Dayton are two darling small towns worth a visit. Take a stroll through Pioneer Park, the oldest in town established in 1902. Walking paths will take you past large shade trees and beautiful ponds, in-season flower gardens and an outdoor aviary. Nothing says romance like sparkling wine. Winemaker George-Anne Robertson leads the sparkling wine program at the Yellowhawk Resort and Sparkling House. This 84-acre hilltop retreat is just gorgeous. Keep an eye out for the namesake hawks as you drive onto this pastoral property. For a fun activity, book an “Experience the Art of Sparkling Wine Disgorgement and Dosage.” This hands-on experience will have guests learn about creating sparkling wine and then have the opportunity to disgorge their own bottle of sparkling wine. Super fun activity!

After graduating from Sandpoint High School, she found herself eager to attend an out-of-state university and travel the world “for life inspiration.” After college, Katie volunteered internationally for three years, living on a ship and sailing to Antarctica to protect endangered whales.

and lunch (8am to 3pm seven days a week), Heart Bowls specializes in açaí bowls, smoothies, coffee and espresso drinks, rice bowls and salads, breakfast sandwiches, avocado toasts, and delicious gluten-free baked goods. “Our classic Açaí Bowl, Loaded Avocado Toast, and Southwest Rice Bowl are the most popular dishes; however, our smoothies, dairyfree milkshakes and coffee are also big hits,” Katie smiles.

“It was during this period of my life that I also learned the ins and outs of plant-based cuisine from top-level chefs and cooks, and ultimately fell in love with plant-based foods,” she remembers. It was during these adventures that she also fell in love with her now husband Gwen Le Tutour.

Heart Bowls prides themselves on being the only establishment in Sandpoint that is 100 percent dairy-free, egg-free and plant-based, and everything they serve can be made gluten-free.

The couple would make the move to Sandpoint in 2016; Katie inspired to show Gwen all of the amazing wonders this area has to offer. “It didn’t take us long to fall in love with life in Sandpoint,” Katie recalls. “As trail runners, we are in paradise.” But something was missing for Katie—one big piece of the “perfect life” puzzle—a vibrant café that makes eating healthy plant-based foods fun and exciting. “I was imagining one like all the many I had frequented while traveling the world, and nothing in Sandpoint was hitting the mark, so I decided I would create it!” During her travels, Katie was exposed to many different, beautiful plantbased cafés, all of which inspired the design and vibe of what Heart Bowls has become. Katie initially introduced Heart Bowls to the community in July of 2019 as a food truck. Less than three years later, in June 2022, Heart Bowls would settle into its brick-and-mortar café on First Avenue and Pine Street in Sandpoint, where Katie and the rest of the Heart Bowls family have been serving up real food, real energy, with a mission to build healthier, happier communities. “I want to share with the community the food that has changed my life,” notes Katie. “I want people in Sandpoint to have access to plant-based foods that taste amazing, are fun and exciting to eat, and that ultimately become a part of their life and transform their health; to heal our planet by creating a healthy, happy culture around food.” Serving up smiles, island vibes and healthy, happy food for both breakfast

“My team and I believe that we have the opportunity to serve and heal our community every day with the foods we serve,” shares Katie. “We see food and hospitality as medicine, and we actively work toward creating a safe, loving and inclusive space for all people.” Katie is proud that she has built a team of passionate people who work together to achieve a common mission; a work culture and environment where the team genuinely enjoys showing up to a job where they are happy and thriving. In return, they are able to serve their guests with that same level of love and enthusiasm that they have amongst their team. Katie aims to utilize her voice and knowledge of nutrition and cuisine to transform the way people see and experience healthy food. She is proud that Heart Bowls is a business that speaks up for causes they believe in and are not afraid to bring politics and beliefs into the business. “It brings me so much joy knowing that we are doing something that has so much intention and is mission-focused,” she adds. Katie and the team at Heart Bowls actively participate in local and social campaigns supporting human rights, women’s rights and animal rights, donating to the Bonner County Human Task Force and various animal welfare groups. “I cannot wait for you to come eat with us for breakfast or lunch. I know that you will love it, and who knows, it might just change your life,” Katie smiles. HEART BOWLS 102 South First Avenue, Sandpoint, Idaho 208.304.7631 | HeartBowls.com

Simple and Healthy Baked Eggs in Avocado Ingredients: • 2 ripe avocados • 4 large eggs • Salt and pepper, to taste • Optional toppings (such as chopped fresh herbs, diced tomatoes or grated cheese)

Method: • Preheat your oven to 375°F. • Cut the avocados in half lengthwise and remove the pits. If necessary, you can slice a small piece off the bottom of each avocado half to make them stable and prevent them from tipping over in the oven. Use a spoon to scoop out some of the flesh from each avocado half, leaving enough room for an egg to fit comfortably. Sprinkle a pinch of salt and pepper over each avocado half. You can also add any other seasonings you like, such as paprika or garlic powder. • Carefully crack one egg into each avocado half, placing it in the hollow you created. If you're concerned about the egg whites spilling over, you can crack the eggs into a small bowl first and then pour them into the avocado halves. Season the eggs with a bit more salt and pepper, to taste. • Place the filled avocado halves on a baking sheet or in a baking dish. Bake in the preheated oven for about 15 to 20 minutes, or until the egg whites are set and the yolks are cooked to your liking. Keep in mind that the yolks will continue to cook slightly after you remove them from the oven, so take them out just before your preferred level of doneness. Let cool for a minute or two before serving. • Sprinkle your choice of toppings over the baked eggs and avocados. Chopped fresh herbs, diced tomatoes and grated cheese are popular options. • These baked eggs in avocado make for a delicious and nutritious breakfast or brunch. You can customize them with various toppings and seasonings to suit your taste preferences. 90

Putting the ‘Fun’ in Fundraising The Follies, presented by Angels Over Sandpoint, hits the stage March 1 and 2

by JILLIAN CHANDLER

F

or more than two decades (since 2003), Angels Over Sandpoint has been presenting some of the best talent Sandpoint has to offer during its annual show—The Follies.

“This is our 20th anniversary of a sold-out show,” smiles Kate McAlister, the producer of The Follies. “This funds the Angels Over Sandpoint to continue their great works in the community of helping those in need.” When it comes to what makes this an event one not to miss, Kate shares it’s the “laughter, the costumes, the fun of just letting go for a few short hours and enjoying life,” adding, “It is right at the time when we are all a little ‘shacky wacky.’ It’s not really winter, and it’s not really spring; it’s the in-between time when we need to get out of the house and let loose.” The Follies, which is a non-political “naughty” show not intended for the easily offended, highlights incredible local talent. “The talent on the stage is amazing, and first-time attendees are always amazed at what a great show it is,” Kate affirms. The Follies 20th Anniversary show takes place March 1 and 2 at the historic Panida Theater. Tickets (450 available for each

94 94

show) go on sale February 2 at EventBrite.com. Those who purchase VIP tickets get in 30 minutes early (at 6:30pm) to select their seat. General admission ticket holders (a limited number of tickets will also be available at Eichardt’s) will be let in at 7pm. The show begins promptly at 8pm, with this year’s theme “Circus.” Kate encourages you to purchase your ticket early, as they usually sell out within the first eight hours! Since 1997, Angels Over Sandpoint has raised more than $1.5 million and contributed money, time and a helping hand to hundreds of local people in need. The Follies has become their most popular fundraising event, with funds used to further Angels Over Sandpoint’s mission. “I have been a member of the Angels for 25 of the 27 years, and I have loved every minute of it,” Kate shares. “Our mission is ‘to honor the memory of the angels who have gone before us by helping those in need in our community.’ And we certainly live up to our mission.” You can find out more about Angels Over Sandpoint by visiting AngelsOverSandpoint.org.
