T

hom Shepherd originally hails from St. Louis, Missouri, but the former CMA of Texas Songwriter of the Year, writer of two number one country hits—“Riding with Private Malone” and “Redneck Yacht Club”—three Texas Music number ones, and over 100 songs recorded by other artists now makes Sandpoint his home with wife and fellow musician and writer Coley McCabe. The duo has spent years performing and touring the world, making their home in Nashville and Texas, but in 2019 they moved to Sandpoint to be closer to Thom’s children, just shy of 30 years from the first time Thom visited Sandpoint in 1992 with his first wife. This September, the musical duo is the face behind Sandpoint SongFest to benefit the Music Conservatory of Sandpoint. The threenight event features nationally recognized hit songwriters performing their original music, as well as songwriters and artists from the Inland Northwest. It’s a one-of-a-kind opportunity to hear the stories behind the hits, and to benefit an incredible organization that helps drive a passion for music in our community and our youth.

Q. How did you first get involved with the Music Conservatory, and what led you to Sandpoint? A. In 2019, after living in Nashville and then Texas and touring the world, my second wife Coley and I decided to make Sandpoint our home so that we could see the kids a lot more. It has been so great; we really love the community. I was planning a songwriter’s seminar and stopped off at the conservatory to ask if I could post a flier about it there. I met with Karin Wedemeyer, the director of MCS, and she told me they were planning on expanding their curriculum to add a contemporary music element and that a songwriting class would fit into that perfectly. I gave the first songwriting class there for six weeks in the spring of 2020.

Q. What influenced your passion for music and sharing it with others?

Q. What inspired you to start SongFest, and what are you most excited about?

A. I know how music makes me feel and wanted to be able to share that feeling with other people. When I moved to Nashville, I wanted to be a performer because it was so much fun, but everyone told me you need to write songs too. Being able to touch people emotionally with something you created is the most incredible feeling. My favorite setting to hear music is the singer-songwriter type of show. The intimate story behind the song, just one singer, one guitar, the audience hanging on every word—it’s magic. I love being the performer in that setting, but I also love witnessing it. Coley always says, “We’re fans first,” which is true, and that’s why we pursued music as a career.

A. I have always thought Sandpoint would be the perfect place for a songwriters festival. I really felt like the community would “get it.” And I can’t wait to see the reaction. We have done two sneak preview shows for the SongFest so far, and both have been very well received.

My first big hit, “Riding with Private Malone,” was a number one song. I always hoped I’d write a song one day that people would say, “Oh yeah, I know that one!” but with “Private Malone” I got so much more. That song has touched so many people in the military and their families. It makes people cry. I met one man who said he joined the military because of my song—that is powerful stuff. Q. What do you love about Sandpoint and its community? A. Sandpoint has such a vibrant, creative community that you just don’t see everywhere. Plus the beauty of North Idaho is breathtaking. I am hooked on skiing and getting out on the lake, and we love being able to ride our bikes everywhere in the summertime. But the best part of living here is when my son calls and says, “Let’s go to Pie Hut” or “Let’s go fishing” or “Let’s go get an ice cream at Panhandle Cone & Coffee” or “Are we skiing today?”

Q. Why is sharing stories and uniting people through music such an important thing, and what do you hope to bring to the community through SongFest this year? A. We love doing something that affects people on an emotional level. There is no better feeling than connecting with people through shared experiences and making them laugh or cry. And having that experience benefit others who are following in our footsteps is the icing on the cake. Q. How would you encourage aspiring musicians to get involved and pursue their passion? A. The main thing I always tell aspiring musicians is to do it because you love it. Because it makes you feel good. Don’t chase it for money. At the same time, be smart with your time and choices. It’s a marathon, not a sprint—doing music is a lifestyle. You can purchase tickets to this year’s SongFest and find out more about being a sponsor at SandpointSongFest.com.

t’s been one incredible summer full of sun, water, adventure and more, but it’s time to exchange the heat for some crisp fall weather and the fall activities we look forward to every year. Once September hits and the digits start to drop, it’s time to start thinking about going back to school, apple picking, and the arts and entertainment scene that keeps this season alive and fresh. Live music, festivals, workshops and more don’t stop after boating season on the lake is over. With the start of September, Sandpoint kicks into action with a slate of activities and shows that reflect the creative, artistic spirit of our town. From fall festivals to live music events, music and art workshops and even studio tours, this town knows how to embrace autumn with spirit. And come the fall equinox on September 22 this year, we’re just getting started with the activities calendar. Here’s just a sampling of what to look forward to this fall in Sandpoint. Schweitzer Fall Fest 2021 kicks off the fall season this year with four days of beer tasting, live music and fun from September 3 through 6. The village will be host to over 80 beers, ciders, seltzers and some wines, with live music all weekend long. This year’s souvenir glasses (always a hit) are already on sale, and for the kids there will be a fun soda station. Fall Fest also marks the last weekend of summer operations before Schweitzer closes until snow season, so it’s your final opportunity to hop on the lift and head on up to the Sky House for some epic views of the valley below in all of its seasonal beauty. The Spot Bus will be running to and from Schweitzer throughout the weekend for those who don’t want to drive. Visit Schweitzer.com/event/fallfest-2021 for a full concert lineup, chairlift and bus times, and to pre-purchase your glassware and beer/wine packages. The Artists’ Studio Tour of North Idaho connects the community and visitors with the working studios of painters, sculptors, photographers, jewelers, potters, glass artists and more in our area. Set for September 3 through 6 this year, you can set your own schedule and enjoy the scenery as you drive from place to place to discover the talented artists who live and work in North Idaho. Enjoy a glimpse into working studios, and stop off for a bite or drink along the way in one of the local restaurants or cafés. For a route map and to explore the various local artists who are on this year’s tour, visit ArtTourDrive.org. Set over Labor Day weekend, it’s the perfect time to take in North Idaho’s breathtaking scenery while gaining some firsthand experience of our local art scene. The Pend Oreille Arts Council brings top-name national and international artists every year to its performing arts series, and the 2021-2022 lineup is now live! From world music to classical, comedy and drama, each season is full of unique performances at the historic Panida Theater and Heartwood Center. This fall, get ready for two special performances at the Panida from Okaidja Go Sandpoint Magazine

Afroso and Barrio Manouche. The performing arts series continues through winter, spring and summer with exciting new events every season, so make sure to stay up to date and purchase tickets at ArtinSandpoint.org, and get out to enjoy a rare opportunity to hear exceptional artists perform in our beautiful and intimate downtown venues. Sandpoint SongFest will make its first appearance this year on September 16 through 18, bringing a weekend of songs and stories to the community. In partnership with the Music Conservatory of Sandpoint, hit songwriters Thom Shepherd and Coley McCabe Shepherd are bringing a unique songwriters festival to the community. Experience nationally acclaimed songwriters performing their hits and sharing the story behind the music, as well as local favorite musicians and songwriters from our own town. “We have some great Nashville writers coming to perform,” shares Thom. “Wil Nance, Leslie Satcher and Steve Azar are all hit songwriters with incredible songs and stories. We are also featuring some excellent local talent including Ben Olson, Sam Leyde, Hannah King and Ben Vogel.” Various venues throughout town will be hosting events over the three-day event, so take time to stop in and experience a whole new scene behind the music with some Nashville legends. Proceeds go to benefit the Music Conservatory of Sandpoint, helping to keep music education affordable and accessible for all ages and abilities. For tickets and event information, visit SandpointSongFest.com. The Kaniksu Folk School launched this year to help enrich lives and foster an ethic of stewardship through its offered series of traditional crafts and music workshops. “Initially piloted in the spring of 2021, the program provides nature-based educational experiences for adults while also supporting area craftspeople and artisans through paid instruction,” explains Marcy Timblin, director of communications for Kaniksu Land Trust. Modeled after renowned folk schools like the North House Folk School in Grand Marais, Minnesota, and the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, North Carolina, the school offers a variety of classes and workshops each season. “Kaniksu Folk School is the only folk school of this kind in our area. Like the aforementioned folk schools, KFS draws upon the highest quality talent as its instructors,” says Timblin. Classes typically last six to seven hours, and are sometimes held as two- or three-part series. Past topics have included basket weaving, leather tooling, birch bark knife sheath crafting, edible and medicinal plant processing and other nature-based arts. Keep an eye out for the fall 2021 schedule released this September at Kaniksu.org/ Kaniksufolkschool. The Follies is back this fall! Get excited for a return to the beloved adult variety show that has delighted Sandpoint audiences with its racy, risqué and sometimes ridiculous performances for years. Tickets go on sale Labor Day, so grab yours before they sell out! The theme for this year’s Follies, to be held October 1 and 2, is Studio 54: 70s Baby. IDAHO? It’s a Seller’s Market

T

hat’s what most people think of the current state of Idaho Realty, especially in Sandpoint. When are housing prices going down? When will the market flip? How does anyone afford to live here anymore?

Well, the truth is that although the housing market in Sandpoint is not as hot as Boise’s housing market, Sandpoint’s housing market is still on fire. With a flood of transplants and new homeowners, the current demand is at an all-time high. Idaho is one of the fastest-growing states in the U.S. and has seen a huge number of new residents migrating from other states around the country. So, who exactly is moving to Idaho? Of the nearly 80,000 people who moved to Idaho in 2018, the largest portion of them, 21,018, moved here from California. Another significant chunk of 14,955 came from Washington state. According to state-to-state migration data from the U.S. Census Bureau, nearly 80,000 people moved to Idaho in 2018 alone. The state of Idaho experienced the largest percentage of population growth from 2018 to 2019 compared to other states, with a 2.1 percent increase in population. The next highest states for population growth, Nevada, Arizona and Utah each saw a 1.7 percent increase. According to Realtor.com (as of July 2021) the median Sandpoint house listing is set to $585,000, with a median listing home price of $364 per square foot, making an “affordable” home in Sandpoint hard to come by. Will the housing market ever come down? To speculate on that possibility, we look to new and incoming residents to eventually fall short of living in the area long-term. Whether it be harsh weather conditions or the allure of accessibility that is offered by larger towns and cities that offer many amenities that small town living typically does not, one may speculate that housing pricings will eventually fall and will most likely become more “affordable” at some point within the next three to five years.

Will the housing market ever come down? One may speculate that housing pricings will eventually fall and will most likely become more “affordable” at some point within the next three to five years.

One thing we can be sure of is that resort living, including condos on Schweitzer or homes on Lake Pend Oreille, will always be in high demand, just as those looking for a winter cabin on the mountain or a nice condo or lake property will always indeed pay for it. Several subdivisions will see new homes in the spring of 2022. We will see many new homes designed for the remote worker—a trend that will continue to rise. If you’re looking to sell your home, what are you waiting for? With bidding wars accumulating to well above asking prices, there’s no better time to sell than now. Just be sure to set the asking price at an appropriate level so the house can sell quickly. The bottom line is that the current state of the housing market may seem ludicrous to some, while those moving from other areas like

California or Arizona see the housing market as an opportunity to start anew. While the housing market may seem to be a strong investment, only time will tell if the housing market prices drop. If nothing else, we know that the Boise housing market continues to boom, and the Sandpoint housing market is climbing slowly after it. For all your realty, be sure to rely on the advice of your local real estate agents, insurers, appraisers and lenders. Your real estate agent has the insights to water systems, community rules and regulations, road maintenance, topography and mail delivery details that professionals outside of your area may not understand. Your real estate decisions may be the most expensive decision of your life.

SEPTEMBER fun fact

A Community Hot Spot with History

C

hances are, if you live in Sandpoint or have visited at least once, you’ve made your way over to what is now termed the Granary Arts District, sandwiched between Church and Oak streets just west of the downtown core. On any given weekend morning (and weekdays for that matter), you’ll find locals and visitors lined up to get their favorite coffee from Evans Brothers, while Matchwood Brewing, Murphy’s and Charles Mortensen’s Syringa Cyclery are other popular hot spots scattered around the district. But this area has more to its story than coffee and beer. The now popular social district was once the old Co-Op Gas & Supply Company, constructed in 1934. The old grain elevator that once ground grain for many local farmers still stands tall presiding over the area. In 1999, Steve Holt and John Edwards purchased the property, transforming the area into a now bustling art, business and social district with an identity all its own.
