J

ennifer Stapleton grew up in Helena, Montana, but like many people, fell in love with Sandpoint the first time she visited, which was during her senior year of college at Gonzaga University. She and her husband Greg shared a goal of moving to a smaller community where they could raise their kids and spend weekends on the water, and Sandpoint called their name. A driving force behind Sandpoint’s new Master Plan, Stapleton is dedicated to her work for our community. When she’s not focused on making our city the best possible community it can be, you’ll find her with family and friends, or maybe even participating in a local cornhole tournament. Q. Is there a specific memory, story or person that has greatly influenced who you are today? A. My family, definitely, has been very influential. I was raised by my parents, Tom and Marilyn, who both have a strong work ethic that was undoubtedly passed on to me. I started working in my dad’s veterinary clinic when I was 9 or 10. It started with cleaning the kennels and quickly evolved into receptionist and veterinary assistant. I assisted with many of his after-hours calls and have helped pull porcupine quills out of a dog more than once! I have worked ever since that time—through high school and college, until today.

and neighbors downtown, at the Panida, and generally out and about. One of the things I have missed most during COVID is music. We are so fortunate to have such great local artists and others who want to perform here. The silence has been deafening. Beyond this, we are a small community that has a fascinating mix of people and diversity of thought from places all over the world. That provides a richness to our community fabric that I haven’t seen elsewhere. We have had the most interesting conversations with strangers who became friends. We regularly have moments with our small group of close friends where we look at one another and just say, “We live here.” Nothing else needs to be said. Q. What are you most passionate about in your role as city administrator?

Beyond that, I was raised with a love for community and a commitment to community service and family that is deeply rooted in loyalty.

A. It’s a simple answer—serving this community and all who live, work, recreate and visit here. I am passionate about community involvement and going beyond the walls of City Hall by reaching out and listening, respecting and really hearing all voices and perspectives. I am also passionate about the city team. Our community is truly fortunate to have such dedicated, talented and innovative city employees. They work hard, and most go far above and beyond to serve this community.

Q. What makes our town such a special, unique place to live?

Q. Is there a specific vision or dream you have for Sandpoint in the future?

A. The beauty of Sandpoint is breathtaking, and the sense of community is on par with the best. The recreational opportunities and open spaces are constantly calling, and we answer as often as we can. We appreciate and attend nearly all of the events and look forward to seeing friends

A. I don’t allow myself my own vision of future Sandpoint because, if I did, it would cloud my ability to hear and represent the collective community vision. Growth is here—more than I think people even realize—and it is important, more than ever, that we come together and define

what aspects of our community and our history we value most and which define our place and who we are so we can stay focused on protecting and preserving them. That is why all of our master planning is so important. Q. How will the Master Plan benefit and advance our community as a place to live and visit? A. These planning efforts are important because they define our community priorities, needs and vision based on community input, benchmarking and best practices and technical expert reviews, analysis and recommendations. I have never seen another community take on as many Master Plans at one time as we are doing. That said, this is how it should be done. I credit our elected officials for their insight and vision in this regard. Usually, governments tackle one Master Plan at a time and, as a result, resources get prioritized based on the most recent planning effort and don’t take into account the needs and visions across all service areas. Without that broader effort, governments inevitably allocate funds to one need at the expense of others. Prioritization can only really happen when all things are considered. Q. What has been a piece of advice or experience that you’ve carried with you and that has impacted your life for the better? A. I had a conversation with a very close friend of mine, Dean Lueck, when I was considering the job opportunity at the city and agonizing over the impacts of a move on my family. Dean was 77 at the time, and he said to me, “You know, Jennifer, one of the regrets I have when I look back on my life is that I did not take enough risks.” Dean’s words have stuck with me to this day, and I’m still fortunate to benefit from his wisdom and friendship. I appreciate him beyond words. Go Sandpoint Magazine

The Panida Theater:

SANDPOINT’S DOWNTOWN GEM

A STORIED PAST AND A BRIGHT FUTURE B Y A B IG A I L T HO R P E

“P

eople often ask about ghosts in the theater—and yes we have some—but we also have the spirit of all who have performed there, been entertained there, and all who have cared for it over the many years,” says Patricia Walker, executive director of the Panida Theater. For more than 90 years, the Panida has served as the heart of the downtown community and arts scene. From film festivals and dance recitals to the yearly Follies, concerts and even a wedding or two, it’s brought joy, fun and a sense of community engagement to our small downtown—and there are more memories to be made. So named for the PANhandle of IDAho, the Panida first opened its doors in 1927. Built by F.C. Weskil, it was designed in the Spanish Mission style and intended as a multi-use vaudeville and movie house. In its early years, a sign hanging backstage reminded people how to pronounce Panida: like Canada instead of with the long sound of the “I” in Idaho, and on opening night, patrons marveled at the intricate architecture and interior, unlike anything else seen in Sandpoint then, or to this day. “The marquee has continued to light up even when times were bleak over the years, and people would save up to come to the theater and escape and be carried away and see friends,” muses Walker. “More than one young man stole his first kiss in the balcony, and you sense the spirit of community pride when you walk in.” Today, an event at the Panida draws people from all over the area, as well as neighboring states and even Canada (during normal time when travel is permitted). The ornate theater can seat up to 500 people, with great acoustics and clear views from every seat. A state-of-the-art sound system and digital projector system has brought the Panida into the modern age, but its historic character remains, the result of no small effort. “Decades of glory faded into years of neglect before major fundraising and restoration efforts by the Sandpoint community reopened the Panida as a nonprofit organization in 1985,” explains Walker. “Today, it still takes continued fundraising and tremendous effort to keep it preserved, protected and serving the community, and it is still worth all the effort.” The Panida is a cornerstone of cultural activities for Sandpoint and contributes significantly to the local economy, but as a nonprofit it relies on community support. “The Panida is the heart of the community, and it takes everyone to keep it beating,” adds Walker. Its mission remains simple: To share and protect the historical integrity of the Panida, providing a space to enrich the community culturally and economically through entertainment, education and community involvement.

As an arthouse, the Panida isn’t just a typical commercial movie theater. During an average year, patrons can enjoy local and global film festivals, movies and presentations, concerts from local and touring artists, dance performances, comedy, live theatre, educational speakers and presentations, and even private events like weddings. But keeping a historic building preserved and functioning as an ongoing cultural hub of the community is no small task. Throughout the years, large projects have been ongoing to keep the Panida in its original beauty. Currently, the Panida team is working on gathering bids to repair the original marquee. Parts have broken over the years, and there are several inoperative neon components. Efforts are underway to restore it to its original functionality and look while utilizing more energy-efficient LED lights behind the letters. They are also looking to continue the restoration of the interior with repairs to the proscenium, a continuation of Greg Marsters from Custom Plaster’s painstaking work to restore the ceilings. As a result of the many efforts over the years, the Panida Theater, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, has received special recognition from the governor of Idaho, the Idaho Commission of the Arts, the Idaho Centennial Commission and the U.S. Department of the Interior, and has even been honored with “Take Pride in Idaho” and “America” awards, and received the coveted Orchid Award for historic preservation from the Idaho Historic Preservation Council. While the theater has been shuttered due to the pandemic, they have made an effort to still offer films and new virtual theatrical performances online to continue bringing arts and culture to the community—even the ever-popular Banff Film Festival was held online. In a typical year, 52 weekends offers ample opportunity to present a diverse range of events and performances, including the widely popular Banff Film Festival, The Oscar Shorts, Panida’s selection of A-list Oscar contender films, the Manhattan Short Film Festival, Panida Playhouse Player live theatre shows, and the beloved Follies burlesque from Angels Over Sandpoint. Typically, The Follies takes place in March, packing the Panida with tickets sold out in advance, and local performers practicing for weeks and months in anticipation of the adult variety show. This year The Follies has been postponed, but Angels Over Sandpoint and the Panida still hope to bring it to Sandpoint in early October, health conditions permitting. In addition to featuring national talent, the Panida also highlights the achievements of local talent in film, screenplays, musicals and acting through events like the Hearthside Stories, Festival of the Bards, Sandpoint Filmmaker Network events and more. The community is invited to rent the space for local fundraisers and community offerings. The Pend Oreille Arts Council holds seasonal concerts there with artists from around the world, and local performers from the Music Conservatory and Sandpoint High School have frequently graced the stage.

FOR MORE THAN 90 YEARS, THE PANIDA HAS SERVED AS THE HEART OF THE DOWNTOWN COMMUNITY AND ARTS SCENE.

“With an emphasis on bringing in a broad variety of arts and entertainment, the Panida continues to be the heart of our downtown, our community and the gem of North Idaho,” says Walker. As a nonprofit, the Panida relies on the donations and fundraising it receives, as well as the income generated through programming to survive. In addition to ticket sales, revenue comes from concessions like beer, wine and other items to help offset expenses to keep the theater running. In addition to the main theater, the Panida also operates two storefronts on either side of the main theater, as well as the Little Theatre, which offers dinner theatre, comedy shows, presentations and workshops, and has even served as a dressing room for large productions like The Nutcracker. “Where the main theater is more limited in what can be done there, the Little Theatre can be conformed to fit the needs more easily, making it a tremendous asset,” explains Walker. “The Panida also has a large group of volunteers, and the income they save the theater by their efforts keeps much-needed revenue in-house.” Once programming resumes, the Panida is excited to offer a new loyalty card program for loyal patrons who want to make the most of the exciting events and programs the theater offers. For those who would like to stay updated, there is a fantastic weekly newsletter you can subscribe to on the website at Panida.org, and if you’d like to help support continuing efforts to keep the Panida as a thriving heart of our downtown community, online or mailed donations are always welcome. For many, the Panida Theater is at the heart of the community and cultural spirit we so treasure in downtown Sandpoint. Here’s to many more memories to be made at our Sandpoint playhouse, vaudeville and movie house.

MARCH fun fact

From Farragut to Sandpoint

O

nce, not so long ago, Farragut was the largest town in Idaho, with a population over 50,000. World War II had caused the area to grow overnight, as the U.S. Government established the Farragut Naval Training Station in 1942. Just several years later, what was once the world’s second largest naval training station was nearly nonexistent. Most of its 776 buildings were sold or removed—some of which made their way to Sandpoint. In 1949, buildings from the former naval training station were floated across Lake Pend Oreille to Sandpoint to replace the Page Hospital. The land along the southern tip of Lake Pend Oreille that had made up the station was put up for sale, and so began the beginning of today’s Farragut State Park.

REAL Market Update - Brought to you by Jackie Suarez, Associate Broker What is the current real estate market climate in North Idaho? Our market continues to favor Sellers. Good news for Buyers – as Spring approaches, more properties are entering the market and mortgage lenders are still offering extremely low rates. Is now a good time to buy or sell? I always say when the time is right for you, the time is right. Sellers, you currently have the advantage of high demand and relatively low supply. Rely on professionals, price cur your home or land accordingly and know your next step. Buyers be ready. Cash offers tend to take priority in this market. Approach your home search with proof of your purchasing ability and keep an open mind to a property’s long-term potential. One thing is certain - our market is constantly changing. What is important to me remains the same. God, Family and Relationships.

Contact Jackie Suarez, your local expert for help with your real estate needs. What Jackie’s clients are saying “Jackie is a pro hands down. Very clear and good communicaaon. A wealth of knowledge that makes a difference! We highly recommend Jackie for any real estate transacaon. You will not be disappointed! Steve and Kim R., Sandpoint “Buying a vacaaon property in a different state from where we reside was a new experience for us, and Jackie Suarez made it so easy! I would recommend her to anyone looking to buy in beauaful Sandpoint, ID.” Pam R., Dover, ID "Jackie Suarez with Century 21 RiverStone provided excellent, professional service in choosing and purchasing our new home. Jackie is knowledgeable, friendly and always ready to help in any way possible. With the ‘paaence of Job’, Jackie was willing to show us anything and everything that we were interested in seeing. She’s also a preey good counselor as well - haha! I wouldn’t think of using anyone other than Jackie Suarez for our next real estate transacaon - she did a fabulous job for us and she’ll do the same for you!” Steve and Gloria S., Sandpoint, ID “Thank you for everything and all your awesome work.” Scoe K., Clark Fork, ID
