arin Wedemeyer was born and raised in Germany and lived and worked in California before moving to Sandpoint with her husband and family in 2006—a place that held the “joie de vivre” that she so loved. Her sense of pioneering and adventure manifested itself in the creation of the Music Conservatory of Sandpoint. Today, Karin still serves as director and founder of the conservatory, and if you’re lucky, you might just catch a glimpse of her pet parrot, Amadea, mimicking the most recent instrument to carry a tune or issuing a “Bravo” at the end of a performance. Q. What do you love most about Sandpoint and the community here? A. I think the joie de vivre—I found that here, and especially at the beginning I found it had a little bit of a bohemian touch—people from different areas with different perspectives. I hope we can hang on to the joie de vivre no matter what. Q. What inspired you to start the music conservatory, and what has been your ongoing vision/mission in regard to it? A. Artistically I am an opera singer, academically I am a historian and archaeologist. I grew up in Germany, and arts and music education is an integral part of the German school system. I am a bit held hostage by my DNA, and it expressed itself in my becoming an opera singer and creating the school. The work intensity and the sacrifices are noteworthy, yet there was the knowledge and understanding that if you have a larger dream it takes that level of commitment. To create excellence does not happen overnight—it takes perseverance, innovation and, really, endurance. I wanted to be sure that we laid a solid foundation, and that really takes time. Q. Can you tell us the story behind the bell and what you have planned for its future? A. We were able to purchase this building in

2019. It was our dream to restore this building and to find the [original] bell. It was [with the help of the museum]—I was on my way to Costco to buy toilet paper for the conservatory, and right after the [museum] article came out, two gentlemen came in and they knew where the bell was. It was in Spokane. We were able to negotiate with the owner to buy it, and on that day I didn’t buy toilet paper, I was able to buy a bell. It was a deeply emotional experience when I rang it for the first time. The next task was to bring it up here. It’s living right now in front of the museum in Lakeview Park so people can take a look. The goal is to lift the bell back up. We have to rebuild the bell tower and reinforce the roof—the bell will go up in its bell tower and look pretty much how it used to, so we can actually play full melodies, and we can announce our concerts. Q. What have been some memorable achievements of the conservatory over the years, and what are you most proud of? A. I think the bell definitely is one of the miracles. Also purchasing the building in 2019 with the help of the foundation—having our building helps us define our future and helps me realize my academic background and bring this building to what it can be and should be. We installed the old fire doors, and we can open them and share music with the community just by opening our doors. We just opened our doors to Little Carnegie—which I call our “Stage of Dreams”—into a real performance space. We started with eight students, and we are now teaching, including our group classes and orchestra, around 400 students. We have a wonderful faculty and staff, and we are very collaborative in our approach and philosophy. I see students and faculty thrive in that

environment, and that gives me personally a tremendous sense of satisfaction and joy. Q. How does the conservatory impact the local community? A. As a conservatory, we are accredited, we have a curriculum that is approved, and we can take a student from the beginning all the way to professional. Students can get grades in lieu of other extracurricular classes, and we have an honors program. We pay a lot of attention to excellence. What makes us unique is that we want to combine excellence with being inclusive and accessible, so that students, if they so desire, have access to the school and to excellence in teaching. For example, we’ve created the Music Matters! after-school program that we invite the community to participate in. Q. Is there any particular person or experience who has influenced you most and helped shape how you approach work and life? A. My parents in many ways. I grew up with a phrase: “You can.” It just never occurred to me that there was something I couldn’t do or pursue. There were no limitations to my pursuits and sense of adventure and pioneering. I want to share that with all of our students here, and even the staff and people I come in touch with—to eliminate “I can’t” out of your vocabulary. That was a true gift from my parents. In building the school there is a fine line between courage and madness, and somewhere in between is where beautiful things can emerge, but it takes that courage and sense of “I can” that I think we need to really celebrate in life and explore. We are not consumers, we are poets and painters, we are musicians and mathematicians, and we have to honor and celebrate that spirit and wonder in us—and we can conquer all.

welve years ago, a nonprofit toy store opened in the back of Sandpoint’s Cedar Street Bridge. Created as a way to help support the children’s craft and play area that had been started in the Bridge shortly before, it was the realization of Shery Meekings’ dream to provide an art and play space for the community of Sandpoint. “I just kept seeing a vision for this beautiful arts space. A space where it was community friendly and under one roof, and weatherproof,” she recalls. At the time, Cedar Street Bridge was practically empty, and Creations was a bright space that drew people into the iconic bridge. For eight years, the Meekings and a volunteer staff ran the nonprofit store and art space, until eventually the store turned into Sandpoint Toys, Shery purchased Carousel Emporium with the help of her husband Scott, and the staff of five volunteers grew to today’s staff of 29 people and two AmeriCorps employees between the two stores and Creations. The Meekings’ story is truly a story of Cedar Street Bridge—an iconic space that has seen the ups and downs of economies, local growth and much change, but has remained the bright light at the heart of a community centerpiece. Today, the bridge is at the pulse of a beautiful, thriving downtown scene, and in many ways, it’s the Eiffel Tower of this town, our own personal landmark at the end of Cedar Street and First Avenue. Anyone who’s been in Cedar Street Bridge in the last several years knows of the bright space brimming with activity that pulls together so much talent, creativity and joy into one unique space. If you have a pulse on the town, you’ll also know that the bridge recently came under new owners, and while change can often be awkward and difficult, the heartbeat of Cedar Street Bridge is still well and alive. Businesses have changed, some have moved, new ones are poised to take their place, and the ones currently in business are navigating the challenges of change—and that story of ups and downs is ingrained in the history of the bridge itself. Spanning 400 feet across Sand Creek, Cedar Street Bridge holds the title as the only marketplace on a bridge in the U.S. Built atop the old 1930’s pedestrian and auto bridge, which at the time was derelict and in danger of being torn down, the bridge was the brainchild of Scott Glickenhaus and inspired by the famous Ponte Vecchio public market bridge in Florence, Italy.


First opened in 1983, the bridge has gone through many ups and downs—at one time serving as the retail space for Coldwater Creek. As economic times ebbed and flowed, so too did the bridge, changing hands several times over almost four decades. “Over the years, I’ve heard this building go from having a bad stigma to this beautiful, happy place. Our customers love it, our stores still carry it for sure,” explains Shery. Over the past several years, the Public Market grew to include 24 vendors in the bridge. While several of those have since relocated as change once again comes to the bridge, the heart of the space lives on. “We still have that heartbeat going, all we can do now as tenants is to encourage these new owners to create that same vibrancy that was here, and to maybe even do better. I can only be hopeful that it will be better than what it was,” she adds. The Meekings have managed Cedar Street Bridge for the past 13 years through thick and thin (the past seven of which Scott managed on his own). As the new owners recently took over this year, it seemed the right time for Scott to retire from management, but the couple is still an active part of the community in the bridge—many of whom they’ve enjoyed watching start in business, bringing their passion, creativity, spunk and personality to the space. Like Fifth Element Hair Studio, a holistic hair salon, started in Cedar Street Bridge about six months ago by Sarah Marshall. “I have always been in business for myself and love creating inspiring spaces. The Cedar Street Bridge offered an affordable downtown location with a bustling community of other businesses,” she explains. “The bridge is a sunny, happy place, with a supportive community of other business owners and patrons, which is what makes it such a great place.” The bridge has been a community place for families and friends to gather, for visitors to get a taste of Sandpoint, and for businesses owners to unleash their creativity and entrepreneurialism. Children have grown up in the space, customers have become like family, and so many locals have found employment they not only rely on but love. “We just have to look upward, and we have to move onward and encourage people with that awesome community heartbeat to come in, and if they want to create a business to bring their professionalism and come and join us,” says Shery. While currently over 50 percent of the bridge is still occupied, there is news of more businesses to come, including potentially a farm-to-table restaurant. “Change can be hard, and sometimes the best new directions in life can come from the hardest times,” adds Sarah. “I have a positive perspective on things to come, and I am hopeful that once the dust settles there will be improvements and positive growth for everyone.” While change is being navigated, the Meekings and Sarah understand that the vital thing is to continue the

legacy of the bridge, and to continue to create relationships and navigate change with a positive and forward-thinking attitude. They look forward to building a relationship with the new owners. “I admire anybody who would take on this endeavor,” says Shery. Shery also serves as president of the downtown business group, which represents 35 local businesses on Main, Second and First. She understands firsthand the importance of small businesses, not only in creating community jobs and beautiful spaces for locals and visitors to visit, but also in shaping the community and relationships of the town. Together, as a downtown group, the businesses employ almost 3,000 locals. “Small businesses are vital for local economies because they are where local people work and spend their money,” explains Sarah. “Without thriving local business, there is no sense of community.” So, while change may be in the air, the heartbeat, community spirit and hometown feel of Sandpoint remains, and businesses at the bridge remain open, eager to welcome all to the sunny, warm space that has delighted visitors for decades, and continues to remain a place for businesses of all sizes to become part of a unique downtown community. “Keep shopping in the bridge and supporting all your local businesses! Without us, Sandpoint wouldn't be as charming and welcoming as it is,” encourages Sarah. “We are here to stay. We love our family,” adds Shery.

s a real estate investor for over 20 years and a realtor for seven, Dave Spencer has the knowledge and expertise of a highly experienced real estate agent. For all your summer/fall housing market tips, Spencer has agreed to share his expertise. “I feel that the current housing rental shortage will continue,” Spencer said. “This shortage of rentals, along with the increasingly higher rental prices, will lead some renters to consider purchasing and owning their own homes.” While renters will potentially be priced out and forced to look deeper into the possibility of purchasing a home, existing homeowners will look to rent out rooms at competitive prices with the goal of paying the mortgage. “Existing owners will continue to rent out their homes, mother-in-law units, apartments and vacation rentals,” Spencer said. “Other homeowners will consider building or adding a unit (or units) onto their properties. Investors will continue to purchase residential, residential income and commercial real estate. Sandpoint will continue to be a sought-after vacation area, and those with available real estate to rent out will continue to do well with their real estate investments. As Will Rogers said, ‘Buy land. They ain’t making any more of the stuff.’” For those feeling pushed to purchase a home, is it even possible in this climate to afford one? Are the days of buyers mixing in massive bidding battle royales, paying well above asking prices for homes sight unseen, seemingly ending? “I believe the ‘feeding frenzy’ is over,” Spencer said. “I felt that the housing market was beginning to get a bit unhealthy previously. Some folks were waiving an inspection on the home they were buying, just to make their offer look more attractive and easier to the seller than the other multiple offers they had received. Out-of-town folks were making offers on properties sight unseen. Folks wanted exorbitant prices for their home because they heard that their cousin’s brother’s sister’s friend got an incredible offer for her house, and they were going to do the same.” While Spencer has instructed his clients to stay away from practices as described, it’s sometimes “out-of-towners” who see what’s really happening. That’s why it’s

important to hire a trusted agent like Spencer who knows the market and which direction it’s swinging to make an informed decision. “The market is making a much-needed self-correction, and that correction will create a much healthier market, and be better and safer for buyers and sellers in the long run. I believe that the housing market will continue to flourish throughout the summer,” Spencer said. “Folks still find Sandpoint and the surrounding areas to be a wonderful place to work, play and live, and people still long for fresh air, wide open spaces, and a place to call their own to plan, build, grow, laugh and dream in and on.” While rising mortgage interest rates continue to rise, Spencer said that “it’s the only investment that you can live in, enjoy and improve.” Thus, real estate continues to be a viable option for investment if one is looking to capitalize their investment with hard work and an interest in home improvements. For homeowners looking to increase the value of their home, Spencer suggests that small improvements can make a big impact on curb appeal, increasing the likelihood to pique a buyer’s interest. “Inexpensive things

such as mowing and edging the lawn,” Spencer said. “Also pulling weeds from flower beds and planters, pruning and trimming the bushes and trees, washing the windows, window screens and front door, or repainting the front door if needed, power washing or scrubbing the driveway and walkways, adding some inexpensive shrubs, flowers, and bark will all give your home a facelift and some much-needed curb appeal.” Buyers are also looking for clean and simple on the inside and outside of the home. The idea of “presentation” can sometimes be overlooked when living in the home you’re selling. It’s important to clean up the clutter. “Decrease the amount of ‘stuff ’ that’s inside your home,” Spencer said. “That includes giving it a good cleaning and removing lots of the extra furniture and belongings that we all love to have. Comedian George Carlin wasn’t kidding when he said that we buy our home so we have a place to put our ‘stuff.’ We just don’t want all of that ‘stuff ’ in our home when we are showing it to prospective buyers or appraisers. Professional home stagers make the furniture in each room very sparse and small, so copy their example, or consider hiring a professional home staging service.”

During this two-day event held at 2nd Avenue and Main Street in downtown Sandpoint, the local community and visitors to town are treated to artist booths, food vendors, and a youth art arena. For Where the Bell Tolls

I

n spring of 2021, a long-lost bell made its way back to its hometown of Sandpoint. Originally perched in a cupola atop the old Sandpoint City Hall finished in 1911, the bell was used as a fire signal for the building, which housed the police station, jail and fire station. The bell was removed in the winter of 1951-52, sold, and then forgotten. Until 2019, when the Music Conservatory of Sandpoint purchased the old City Hall and began plans for the restoration of the building, including a dream of returning the bell to its former space. But where was the bell? With help from the Bonner County History Museum, the search began. After an article published by the museum, two men came forward with news of a potential hit. There was a bell in Spokane, at Way Out West Antiques. The director of the music conservatory was on her way to Costco to buy toilet paper for the conservatory when she got the call. She ended up purchasing a bell instead. Today, the one-ton bronze bell sits in the yard of the museum, awaiting its return to the top of the historic Sandpoint City Hall building, where it will continue to alert the community— this time for music.
