The holiday season is a time of reflection,

joy and togetherness. It’s a time when we gather with friends and family to celebrate traditions, exchange gifts and create cherished memories. However, it’s also a time to express our gratitude for the wonderful communities that surround us. Our communities play a crucial role in shaping our lives and experiences. They provide us with support, friendship, and a sense of belonging that is invaluable, especially during the holidays. Being grateful for our community is an important aspect of celebrating the season.

One of the most beautiful aspects of this time of year is the way communities come together to support one another. Whether it’s through charitable acts, volunteering, or simply being there for each other, the holiday spirit tends to bring out the best in people. We see food drives, toy collections, and charity events that exemplify the compassion and generosity of our communities.

Learn more about Gig Harbor’s Downtown Waterfront Alliance and all they do for local businesses and the community, including their wonderful events. Then there’s Santa’s Castle, which aims to ease the holiday stress for our active military families by distributing toys, books, games, bikes and stocking stuffers in time for Christmas. Be sure to check out our holiday shopping pages, featuring some great local businesses to visit for all your holiday shopping needs. In a world that can sometimes feel increasingly disconnected, the holidays offer us a chance to reconnect with our roots, our communities, and each other. Let us take a moment this holiday season to be grateful for the incredible network of people who surround us, and to celebrate with an open heart the unity, diversity, and love that our communities bring into our lives. After all, it is this sense of togetherness that makes the holidays truly magical.

In this issue, you will find holiday-inspired articles to help prepare you for the season.

that forms every aspect of our business: Honor God through how we treat every customer. Act with integrity. Build to last. Never forget each project touches someone’s family.

Honest craftsmanship in a tradition of quality

“Fabulous company! Had them install a fireplace, replace a garage roof, replace an old door and electric wall heater, put in a hot tub outlet, and a bunch of other things. Fast, responsive. Stuff just gets done, and done well. Beautiful work, good eye for details. Able to adjust to changing requirements, provides great service without upcharges. Will DEFINITELY use again.” -Scott

he holiday season is a time of enchantment and camaraderie; a chance to gather with loved ones and revel in the magic of the festivities. Yet, amidst the flurry of extravagant celebrations and opulent feasts, there exists a distinct allure in embracing the art of simplicity. This is where the concept of hosting a small dinner party during the holiday season comes to the forefront—a delightful way to foster genuine connections and create lasting memories. In an age of extravagance, the charm of simplicity shines ever brighter. As the holiday season approaches, the allure of uncomplicated gatherings holds a special place in our hearts. Rather than being consumed by elaborate decorations and menus, we can find fulfillment in cultivating an ambiance of warmth and authenticity. The foundation of a successful small dinner party lies in the choice of guests. By keeping the guest list intimate, consisting of cherished friends and close family members, the stage is set for meaningful conversations and an atmosphere of genuine relaxation. Personalized invitations, whether handwritten notes or carefully crafted digital messages, communicate a sense of significance that resonates with each individual. When it comes to decorating for such an intimate affair, less truly is more. Simplicity extends to the table itself—a tastefully arranged setting with minimal embellishments, a scattering of candles casting a warm glow, and perhaps a touch of verdant foliage to infuse a hint of nature’s elegance. The aim is not to overwhelm the senses but to create an environment where heartfelt interactions take center stage. Culinary artistry can find its zenith in the simplicity of a thoughtfully curated menu. While the allure of an elaborate banquet looms large, a well-prepared selection of dishes can leave a more indelible mark. A seasonal menu, carefully crafted from the freshest ingredients, can evoke the essence of the holidays. A succulent roast as the centerpiece, flanked by a selection of thoughtfully chosen sides and crowned with a delectable dessert, can become a symphony of flavors that resonates in the memory.

LESS truly is MORE. 22

from ordinary to extraordinary. A PERSONAL TOUCH CAN ELEVATE THE EVENING

A personal touch can elevate the evening from ordinary to extraordinary. Place cards handwritten with care, sharing anecdotes about the dishes served, or even presenting guests with a small token of appreciation to take home. Weaving these gestures into the fabric of the gathering adds depth to the experience. It’s the attention to detail and the infusion of your personality that make the occasion truly unforgettable. Introducing interactive elements into the evening can transform it into a tapestry of shared joy. Engaging games, collaborative DIY projects or even a storytelling session can weave bonds that extend beyond the event itself. These activities unlock a realm of shared experiences, fostering connections that linger long after the evening draws to a close. Hosting a small dinner party during the holiday season is a finely orchestrated art. It begins with meticulous planning, 24

GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL november/december 2023

outlining the guest list and dispatching invitations in advance. This groundwork enables you to focus on the nuances that elevate the evening from ordinary to exceptional, ensuring every aspect is infused with thoughtfulness and intention. Central to the art of hosting is the menu. Instead of inundating yourself with an exhaustive spread, curate a selection of dishes that harmonize with one another and encapsulate the essence of the season. Accommodating dietary preferences and restrictions ensures everyone feels catered to and cherished. Timing is a silent conductor in this symphony of flavors and interactions. A well-structured timeline, guiding the presentation of each dish and the progression of the evening, maintains a harmonious flow. This foresight prevents lastminute rushes, allowing you to bask in the company of your guests and partake in the magic you’ve conjured.

Conversations are the threads that weave the evening into a vibrant tapestry. Carefully configuring the seating arrangement can spark dynamic exchanges, transcending small talk and delving into realms of shared interests and revelations. Mixing personalities ensures a kaleidoscope of discussions, enlivening the atmosphere. As the host, your demeanor paints the backdrop against which the gathering unfolds. Welcoming guests with warmth, facilitating introductions, and cultivating an environment of comfort and inclusion sets the tone. A gracious host makes every guest feel like an integral part of the celebration. While planning is imperative, embracing spontaneity injects an element of enchantment. Allowing the evening to evolve organically and adapting to unforeseen turns can lead to delightful surprises. The joy lies in observing connections deepen, witnessing laughter and camaraderie flourish in unexpected directions. As the holiday season beckons, consider the enchantment of simplicity in your celebrations. The art of a small dinner party beckons—a canvas upon which cherished memories are painted, connections forged, and the essence of togetherness celebrated. By thoughtfully curating your guest list, tending to décor and culinary delights, and imbuing each element with your personal touch, you master the art of hosting a small dinner party that resonates long after the festivities fade. Amid a world enamored with opulence, the elegance of simplicity shines bright in these moments of shared joy and authentic communion.

These warm hues not only visually envelop you but also infuse a sense of grounded comfort, cocooning you in a welcoming embrace.

04

Cozy Nooks Craft intimate pockets of warmth within your home by curating snug corners. Cluster plush seating adorned with textured throws near windows drenched in winter light or by the fireplace’s crackling warmth. These inviting nooks provide a sanctuary for relaxation, daydreaming, or simply basking in the beauty of winter landscapes.

Beverage Station Elevate your winter experience by curating a dedicated hot beverage station, where you line up an array of teas, coffees and indulgent hot chocolates and all of the accompaniments. This functional yet charming addition not only treats your taste buds but also infuses your space with the inviting aroma of winter comforts, evoking the ambiance of a rustic café.

06

Natural Elements Harness the serene energy of the outdoors by inviting nature’s elements into your winter cocoon. Incorporate rustic wooden furniture, arrange clusters of pinecones, and artfully display dried branches. These organic accents not only add textural diversity but also forge a connection with the natural world— even as you stay snug indoors.

Turning your home into a cozy haven for winter doesn’t have to be a daunting task. By embracing luxurious textiles, creating ambient lighting, using an earthy color palette, establishing cozy nooks, setting up a warm beverage station and incorporating natural elements, you can make your living space a warm and inviting retreat that helps you truly enjoy the beauty of the winter season.

uilty as charged for encouraging people to list their homes in the spring and summer markets. Homes are more beautiful when the sun is shining, flowers are blooming, windows are washed, and when the sun sets later in the day.

However, as I approach all things in this industry, the answer to this question is very subjective. You need to buy or sell real estate when it makes the most sense to your family. Real estate is usually situational, and the reality is, just because we are experiencing seasonal changes here in the Pacific Northwest, they are not in Arizona or Florida. This leads me to the top reasons we see for selling during the holidays: 1. You are getting a job transfer. 2. Your family is growing or shrinking. 3. You’re relocating to another area and found the home you want to buy. Our local area has a very strong military community, and the military doesn’t wait for the Christmas tree to come down or the sun to come out for the perfect photos. When it’s go time, it’s go time. The flip to that is that it can be a very profitable time to purchase

during the holiday season. So, if you can tone down the holiday décor and keep your yard looking great for your listing, you may capitalize on the buying side that will far outweigh a perfect listing. Our advice to you … if you are eyeing a specific property or you are purchasing in a competitive price point, a way to eliminate competition is to shop in the winter months. If a new home is on your Christmas list, here are some pretty easy rules to follow! 1. Make sure your REALTOR knows the ups and downs of a seasonal market. 2. Keep your holiday décor neutral. 3. Cut back all landscaping. 4. Get those windows washed, even though it may be rainy outside!

$826,703

If a move is in your 2024 plans, the time is now to start researching REALTORS to ensure all of the necessary things are done to assure your home is the shiniest penny when that inventory load unleashes along with the spring springing and flowers blooming.

$2,550,000 $4,850,000

If the pressure of listing during the holidays is just too much, we get it, and typically the statistics show year over year we will get a surge in inventory and prices but a decrease in days on market come February and March. If a new home is on the list, what you should be doing during the holiday season is shopping for your REALTOR!

If you wait until February or March to start the interview process, you could be behind $826,703 the 8 ball for an early spring listing. Most winters we spend getting listings $4,850,000 prepped with $826,703 $826,703 $4,850,000 contractor visits, maintenance items repaired, mini remodels to enhance ROI. Developing. Growing. Learning. The Little Gym Gig Harbor provides a safe, nurturing space for children to explore and discover

S

eptember 11 of this year marked the official opening of The Little Gym here in Gig Harbor. With deep family roots and ties to the community, owner Robert Wiles wanted to find a way to give back to his community and other families within it.

“My family is from here. The house I live in, my daughter Parker is fifth generation to grow up in this house, on this property, in Gig Harbor,” Robert shares. “It’s a special location, a special piece of property, with a lot of tradition and history; a great sense of family just sitting where I’m sitting right now looking out the window. It invokes all the great memories of being a kid.” Robert was inspired to bring something new to children and families in the harbor after several conversations with his wife. “She was always looking for something to do with Parker, and there really wasn’t anything out there,” he recalls. “She had been to a Little Gym in Austin, Texas, and said a Little Gym in Gig Harbor would be amazing!” He started the process of researching The Little Gym franchise two years ago, quietly doing research, going through the process of getting vetted to be a franchisee of The Little Gym. “And here we are. I manifested the power of positive thinking, and we opened up a beautiful gym.” Robert dedicated his time searching for the perfect location. As a real estate Broker, he understands building codes, parking, traffic impact fees … and location. “Location is the number one factor whether residential or commercial real estate,” he states. “Location, location, location.” Situated on Borgen Boulevard in the Target parking lot with great access to everything, lots of neighborhoods, the YMCA and an elementary school, The Little Gym is ready to welcome those 4 months of age to 12 years old. “We’re really building something for the community, which is vital for child development and imperative for young parents, families, nannies,” he affirms. “We have a diverse crowd, and it’s such a community driven, growth-oriented, beautifully structured curriculum.” At The Little Gym, they are not only building growth in the children they serve, they are building growth within the community by introducing families to each other through the avenue of their children. “It’s a very non-competitive, nurturing, positive, loving, growth-oriented, milestone-creating environment with delightful advancements in all aspects of a child’s growth, whether it’s mental, physical, cognitive; that’s what three-dimensional learning taps into. And it’s pretty cool to witness,” Robert reaffirms. “We want people to leave knowing they had fun, they were safe, and they learned something.” The Little Gym offers different membership tiers, such as locking in as a founding member. Each membership is month-to-month. Choose from one class weekly … or two! From parent/child classes, gymnastics, movement-based curriculum and dance to enrichment clubs, there is something for every child to enjoy while learning and building confidence.

“Even children who are a little shy, maybe have a little separation anxiety, we see that changing within the first two to three classes,” he smiles. “All of a sudden there’s pure joy, interacting with the other kids. You don’t have to integrate into the curriculum at the outset. That’s the beauty of this curriculum. Here we promote a culture and an environment where no is not said. We let them explore. We let them integrate at their speed. It’s a safe place. Letting them develop, letting them grow, letting them learn.” In addition to the monthly memberships, The Little Gym is available for birthday parties, special events, and “Survival Night—which invites parents to drop off their kids on a Friday night for three hours. “We’re building a full environment and a point of destination where people can know they are going to be treated well and have a good time. To have that consistency with that spectrum of that specific age range we cater to, there’s nothing like this in the Gig Harbor,” notes Roberts. Because The Little Gym opened on 9/11, and due to Robert’s close affiliation with the fire department (his wife is a firefighter) and first responders, 10 percent of all memberships signed from opening day until the end of the year will be donated to Tunnels to Towers, an organization that builds modified homes for disabled vets. “I’m building a legacy for my daughter,” he adds. “As a parent, I’m trying to create something long lasting. Money and material things aren’t sustainable, and they’re not what is remembered or thought about. But impacting someone’s life is, that’s the culture we’re creating.”

teacher in the spotlight b y R A C H E L K E L LY

RICHARD MILLER Key Peninsula Middle School

M

r. Richard Miller teaches grades sixth through eighth at Key Peninsula Middle School. His story is a bit unique, as he began teaching at age 52 and now has been teaching chemistry, art, science, photography, Spanish, CTE classes, English and social studies for 11 years. Currently he is teaching art, photography and Spanish along with coaching volleyball. He has chosen to be actively involved with our children at an age when many have one eye on retirement. It’s no wonder then why Mr. Miller is this month’s teacher spotlight—he has a unique perspective. “One of my favorite things about teaching is seeing or hearing from my former students as they find their way in life. I love it when they excitedly tell me about their accomplishments and future plans,” he shares. “Teaching in a middle school, I have the privilege of watching my students transition from children to teens and then adults in our community. The transition is often a bit messy, but it is so rewarding when you see your students succeeding in life.” It’s a reward that all of us have the opportunity to actively support and celebrate. It is by Mr. Miller’s example that we see the unique opportunities available to us to impact the children in our community, especially in lowincome schools at this valuable transitional age. There is no shortage of opportunities to support our youth and no age at which we are unable to contribute in ways both small and big toward the health of our community.

“One of my favorite things about teaching is seeing or hearing from my former students as they find their way in life.” It is generally considered necessary to rephrase, lengthen or edit when writing articles to better present you, the reader, with something easily absorbed. The idea being that proper presentation will better reflect the idea. However, sometimes it’s more prudent to simply quote the speaker, and in this case, Mr. Miller says it best. “Quality public education requires a strong financial commitment from our community. I want to thank all the taxpayers who willingly support our local schools. Sadly, many great teachers are currently leaving the profession in unprecedented numbers. Find a good middle school teacher and take time to thank them / support them—it’s a harder job than you realize … and our children deserve the best.” Thank you, Mr. Miller, and all our teachers, for your diligent and valuable work. We support you.

STUDENT IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Sadie Jorgenson Eighth Grade Kopachuck Middle School b y R A C H E L K E L LY

adie Jorgenson is just 14 years old, but regardless of her age, she has big plans for her future! Right now she’s focusing on graduating from middle school, and next year she’ll be moving on to Gig Harbor High School. After that, she wants to go to college and already has some ideas on where she wants to go and what she wants to major in. “I want to study marine biology and someday become a shark conservationist. It seems like a silly dream to some people, but I have always been fascinated by sharks and other marine animals,” says Sadie. Naturally her goal is to go to the University of Hawaii in Honolulu, where there’s a lot of fantastic marine biology. This doesn’t seem like a silly dream at all! It sounds like a goal—a very well thought-out goal. However, right now Sadie has a few years more in school before she chases after her goals. For her eighth-grade year, she is in leadership, where her focus is to help her school become closer as a community. She is ASB president, and as such she helps her school solve problems through representation. In her free time, she loves to play volleyball at the Dakine Volleyball Club. With the volleyball club she has the opportunity to travel with her team to tournaments, which is especially fun. Other than that, she is just doing what someone her age should be doing: making new friends and exploring new opportunities.

“I want to study marine biology and someday become a shark conservationist. It seems like a silly dream to some people,

but I have always been fascinated by sharks and other marine animals,” She is inspired by her leadership teacher Ms. Blackburn and her school principal Mrs. Parke. “They have both taught me many lessons on how I can be a better leader, and just a better person in general to people.” It sounds like Sadie is learning from the best. Sadie is excited, inspired, encouraged, and surrounded by the support of her school and family. She, in turn, gives this same encouragement to others. She has room to dream and figure out her goals. Life can be a funny thing, with its ups and downs and unexpected turns. But it sounds like Sadie knows what she likes and has a framework on how she can get where she wants to go. She has a great foundation, and she’s off to a great start.

Santa’s Castle gives generously to active military and their families around the holiday season, providing gifts free of charge to service members’ families. “We at Santa’s Castle know that our service members sacrifice a lot for our country—and with that sacrifice

comes a lot of personal and financial stress. We feel that service members and their families should not have to experience any difficulty in providing for their children during the holidays,” says Donna Handoe, president of Santa’s Castle. Our active military put a lot aside to prioritize the safety and security for those of us home for the holidays. Their sacrifice is recognized as a significant and worthy one that puts them and their families under a lot of pressure. One thing they shouldn’t have to sacrifice is the precious time spent with their families during the Christmas season. “This is a small area that we are fully equipped to help with,” says Donna. And help they do! Santa’s Castle ensures that service members focus on family by putting their army of “elf ” volunteers to work, delivering the holiday fun without the stress. Santa’s Castle brings much-needed financial and emotional relief on the holidays for our service members. There are a lot of positives to Santa’s Castle, but one of the big ones is the support they receive. Santa’s Castle has functioned for 29 years as a completely volunteer-run organization. As such, there is very little

ear-round, or so the story goes, Santa is hard at work in his workshop. He’s making his list and checking it twice (or thrice); maybe adding some last-minute do-gooders and scratching off a few rock-throwers. He’s thinking and saving, building and collecting, just the right gifts for the children around the world. Aided by his loyal band of elves, sawing can be heard in the arctic, even in the summer months. He might take Mrs. Claus on a scenic sleigh ride here and there, hot chocolate in hand, and who could blame him? There’s lots of kids in the world. And yet, through tireless and continuous effort, Santa oversees the building of the toys. Stocks the stockings. Eats the Christmas cookies. On Christmas Day, we wake to his handiwork. This is how the story is told, but it’s just a fairy tale. But is it? While Santa may not be exactly the one doing all the work, there is one such organization that works tirelessly year-round to bring gifts to thousands of children. Its name is Santa’s Castle.

families they serve. overhead and no salaries to pay. This ensures that funds donated go directly to buying and stocking shelves with toys. With an 18-person Board of Directors and 150 volunteers (elves), Santa’s Castle works to ensure a successful toy distribution. Much like in Santa’s workshop, Santa’s Castle works yearround with precision, compassion and thought to the families they serve. Last year, during the 2022 Christmas season, Santa’s Castle searched for, bought, accepted, stocked and distributed $386,381 worth of toys to service members’ families. Families are recommended by chaplains and commanders; there is no need to volunteer or sign up. Recipients include the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine, Coast Guard and Reserve families—all active branches of the military. This amounts to somewhere around 1,023 service members and 2,311 children. Each family chooses the gifts that their children receive to ensure that children really receive what they’re looking forward to getting. As such, the value of the gifts that each family receives varies. However, each child generally receives $150 to $200 in toys, games, books, stocking stuffers and coats. Everything from the little to the big is taken care of, especially providing relief for families in situations with loved ones arriving last minute from overseas. While there are many similarities of Santa’s Castle to the classic tale, there is one big difference in that the difficult and special work they do isn’t reserved for the North Pole. The service that Santa’s Castle provides is made possible because of the many generous donations from the larger community, including local businesses, banks, and city-run organizations. In other words, without you, such a wonderful program would not be possible! For more information on how you can be involved (perhaps this year you’d like to be an elf?), check out JBLMSantasCastle.org and give JOY this Christmas! 44

Supporting Economic Vitality While Preserving the Historic Waterfront District Gig Harbor’s Downtown Waterfront Alliance by JILLIAN CHANDLER

F

ounded 15 years ago as a 501c3 nonprofit organization with a mission to support the economic vitality and preserve the historic character of the Waterfront District here in Gig Harbor, the Downtown Waterfront Alliance has been a steadfast support organization for many waterfront businesses over the years. “The Alliance is a geographically designed organization, so businesses who are in our district range from Anthony’s Restaurant to the new 7 Seas and up Pioneer, across Judson and on both sides of Harborview Drive,” notes Carrianne Ekberg, executive director for the Alliance. “For those who are not physically located in our district, we encourage community leaders and members to volunteer, become a sponsor or donate.” As an accredited Main Street organization (MainStreet.org), the Alliance is made up of a volunteer board of directors and four committees, which form the four points of the Main Street framework: Economic Vitality, Design, Organization and Outreach, and Promotions. In addition to hosting events and overseeing projects, the Alliance has built and maintained important relationships with other local agencies, city and government officials, and advocated for the importance of Main Street communities— not only in Gig Harbor but across Washington state. The Alliance is proud to partner with other local nonprofits and government agencies; work directly with business owners and property owners along the waterfront; and partner with the community through events such as the Farmers Market, Sip & Stroll, Girls Night Out, Restaurant Week and more.

“Events are a great way to bring the community together and also get people into storefronts they may have never visited,” states Carrianne. “For example, our Sip & Stroll this past October encouraged more than 500 people to stop at 28 locations along the waterfront; several of them new businesses who have opened in the last six months.” The goal of the Alliance is to raise awareness about the waterfront district and to encourage people to shop, dine and spend their time there, and the Alliance strives to become a main resource for residents and tourists as to what’s happening along the downtown waterfront. Come 2024, the Downtown Waterfront Alliance will be focused on ensuring their events align with their transformation strategies, with an emphasis on shoulder and off-season, not just the summer months. They will also be strategizing on how to make the events inclusive for all demographics. “We couldn’t do all the things we do without the support from our volunteers,” Carrianne affirms. “The Alliance is actively seeking volunteers to help with events and also additional programs throughout the year.” Those interested in learning more about volunteer opportunities are asked to visit GHDWA.org/volunteer. For those interested in staying in the know with all that’s happening along Gig Harbor’s waterfront, Carrianne welcomes you to sign up to receive their weekly email newsletter campaign at GHDWA.org/contact-8. 48

Where minimal meets whimsical: Local Whimsy bringing joy to people’s lives through their unique local makers shopping experience

T

here’s a new and wonderful shopping experience that awaits right here in Gig Harbor, thanks to entrepreneurs Salena Ausburn and Caasi Dickens. Owner operated, Local Whimsy is a collaboration of local makers for the Gig Harbor community. “We want our makers to chase their small business goals, and we want to support them along the way,” shares Salena. “We hope this space feels inviting and fresh. We hope you leave with your cup full, a new friend, and maybe with that something you didn’t know you needed.” Caasi, founder of Local Makers and owner of Caasi Lee Designs, always had the dream of a retail location for Local Makers, while Salena, owner of Wild Whimsy Plant Co., aspired to expand into a full-blown plant/gift shop. “Over the years of working alongside each other and in the same community, we learned who each other were as business women, and then the concept was born, a collaboration,” smiles Caasi. “Salena and I, along with our ambitious assistants Erin and Clare, began thinking about who we could serve, what their needs are, fresh ways to keep it interesting and engaging,” she goes on to reflect. “Local Whimsy brings together dozens of local small businesses and talents. Target hit! Our mission is to create a space that serves the community through offering locally handcrafted goods, a place to gather for hands-on projects or education, while keeping it fresh and interesting.”

by JILLIAN CHANDLER

More than Just Retail

Offerings will continue to evolve as Caasi and Salena engage with various local makers and artists. “That’s what is delightful about our design,” Caasi states. “One thing you can rely on is that we offer just the right gifts that speak to our great Gig Harbor and Pacific Northwest.” From specialty items to pamper a new mom, items to keep children’s hands busy, to a one-of-a-kind piece of functional art, and so much more, Local Whimsy has it all. And with laser cutting and an engraving machine onsite, they can make just the right gift that expresses your care to a client or loved one—just in time for the holiday season. Caasi and Salena enjoy this opportunity they manifested to be able to walk beside fellow creatives and lend a hand or idea that will help to elevate their businesses. “It’s not about competition; life is about collaborating and lifting one another up,” the pair agrees. “Creating and organizing the opportunity for others to fulfill their passions and serve their purpose.” Since their foundation is built on supporting small businesses, their whole mission is to give back, coaching and assisting local small businesses in every way they know possible. happiness: A Key to a Healthier Life

The science behind the connection BY DREW JOHNSON

GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL november/december 2023 GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL november/december 2023

I

n the pursuit of a healthier life, we often focus on the physical aspects—regular exercise, balanced diets and sufficient sleep. However, a growing body of research has revealed that happiness, that elusive and subjective emotion, plays a pivotal role in our overall well-being. Beyond its emotional benefits, happiness has been scientifically linked to improved cardiovascular health, healthier eating patterns and exercise habits, a stronger immune system, and more. This intriguing connection underscores the importance of nurturing our emotional state alongside our physical efforts. It might come as a surprise, but a joyful heart isn’t just a metaphor. Scientific studies have established a strong link between happiness and cardiovascular health. When we experience happiness, our bodies release hormones like endorphins and oxytocin, which promote relaxation and lower stress levels. Reduced stress directly translates to a healthier heart by lowering blood pressure and reducing the risk of heart disease. A study conducted by the American Heart Association

found that individuals with positive emotional well-being were less likely to develop coronary heart disease. This highlights the tangible impact of happiness on our cardiovascular system and emphasizes the need to prioritize our emotional health. Have you noticed that you tend to make better food choices when you’re in a good mood? This phenomenon isn’t coincidental. Researchers have discovered a significant correlation between happiness and dietary habits. When we’re happy, we’re more likely to opt for nutritious foods that nourish our bodies. On the flip side, negative emotions often lead to comfort eating, where unhealthy, high-calorie foods are consumed as a coping mechanism. By fostering happiness, we can consciously influence our food choices, contributing to long-term health. Moreover, the connection between happiness and exercise is a reinforcing cycle. Engaging in physical activities releases endorphins, often referred to as “feel-good” hormones. These endorphins induce a sense of happiness and euphoria,

promoting regular exercise. Simultaneously, when we’re happy, we’re more inclined to engage in physical activities that we enjoy, leading to increased motivation and adherence to workout routines. This synergy between happiness and exercise underscores the importance of integrating joyful movement into our lives. In the era of health concerns, bolstering our immune system has never been more crucial. Emerging research reveals that happiness has a direct impact on the immune system’s efficacy. The stress hormone cortisol, which can weaken the immune response, is regulated by positive emotions. When we’re happy, cortisol levels decrease, allowing our immune system to function optimally. Furthermore, studies have shown that happier individuals tend to recover faster from illnesses and have a reduced susceptibility to infections. This connection serves as a compelling reason to prioritize activities that bring us joy and cultivate an emotionally positive environment. Delving deeper into the physiological realm, happiness has been linked to cellular health and longevity. Telomeres, the protective caps on the ends of chromosomes, play a crucial role in cellular aging. Shortened telomeres are associated with age-related diseases and a decreased lifespan. Remarkably, a study conducted at the University of California, San Francisco, found that individuals reporting higher levels of happiness had longer telomeres. This suggests that happiness may contribute to slowing down the cellular aging process, leading to a longer and healthier life. Stress is an omnipresent adversary in today’s fast-paced world, taking a toll on both our mental and physical health. Enter happiness as a potent stress buffer. When we’re happy, our bodies release chemicals that counteract the effects of stress hormones. This not only helps us manage stress more effectively but also translates to a healthier body. Chronic stress is linked to a plethora of health issues, including cardiovascular diseases, compromised immune function and mental health disorders.

By cultivating happiness, we equip ourselves with a powerful tool to mitigate the harmful effects of stress. The interplay between happiness and physical health is undeniably intricate. As we strive for a healthier life, we must recognize the symbiotic relationship between emotional and physical well-being. Nurturing happiness involves a multifaceted approach that includes practicing gratitude, nurturing social connections, engaging in regular exercise and pursuing activities that spark joy. By integrating these practices into our lives, we set the stage for a harmonious coexistence of happiness and health. It is plain to see that the scientific evidence is resounding: Happiness is far more than a fleeting emotion. It’s a powerful force that directly influences our physical wellbeing. From enhancing cardiovascular health and encouraging healthier eating patterns to boosting the immune system and promoting cellular health, happiness is an essential ingredient for a healthier life. As we navigate the complexities of modern existence, let us remember that fostering happiness is not only a pursuit of emotional fulfillment but also a proactive investment in our long-term health.

hether you are a newly separated or divorced parent or have been navigating two-household holidays for a while, it’s that time of year again to think about how best to help your kids, and you, enjoy this festive time of year as you learn to establish new traditions. Here are three tips for seeing yourself sanely through to the new year: 1. Plan the schedule as far in advance as possible with the other parent. If you already have a parenting plan, you probably have a guideline for who gets the kids for which holiday. However, have you designated exchange times? Many parenting plans are vague and only assign the actual holiday, leaving exchanges up for interpretation (and potential conflict). For example, does “Mom gets Thanksgiving” mean from 9am to 7pm on Thanksgiving Day, or does it mean from Wednesday night until the following Friday morning? Does “Dad gets Christmas Eve” mean a return time of 10pm on December 24 or does it extend until 9am Christmas morning? Better to get those exchange times ironed out now to alleviate last-minute chaos and potential upset when emotions may already be running high. 2. Build in time for the kids to relax with each of you. Too often, I see parents emphasizing how to maximize their own holiday time with the children by trying to fit in too many activities (Zoolights! Nutcracker! Holiday movies! Gingerbread houses at Grandma’s!) because they feel they have to experience all these things with their kids apart from the other parent in limited time. This can lead to exhausted kids who may end up spending their holiday sick, or just run down and grumpy, especially if all the activity occurred during one parent’s time and the other parent has to deal with the after-effects (or with the expectation that they now have to also compete with the activity level).

64 64

GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL november/december 2023

Try to coordinate with your co-parent ahead of time regarding what activities you’d each like to enjoy with the kids, and spread joy for them among both of you. Then incorporate some “downtime” for all of you. (Yes, sometimes you have to actually schedule downtime.) 3. Set a budget and establish gift lists with your co-parent. This one can’t be stressed enough. Particularly for couples who are newly separated, I often see each parent trying to overcompensate for disrupting their prior family holiday traditions by overbuying, overspending, overdecorating, over-everything! You also don’t want to be competing with the other parent as to who will give a major gift to a child that the child requested. One solution for major gifts is to say it is from both Mom and Dad. Maybe have one major gift for each child at each household that you can say is from both of you, thereby avoiding any appearance of favoritism. With a little planning, communication and understanding, you and your co-parent can successfully navigate these next couple of months smoothly if you let yourselves acknowledge that this can be a time for establishing new traditions while teaching your children that you are all still “family,” regardless of whether they spend their holidays in one home or two. radiant smile is often considered a reflection of good oral health and enhances one’s self-confidence. In recent years, cosmetic dentistry has gained significant popularity, offering various solutions to improve the appearance of teeth and gums. Among the most sought-after treatments are veneers, lumineers, teeth whitening, snap-on smiles, and even the use of Botox for facial aesthetics. It’s time to explore these different procedures and their benefits. Veneers and lumineers are two effective solutions for correcting imperfections in teeth. Veneers are thin shells made from porcelain or composite resin that are bonded to the front surface of teeth. They can cover gaps, chips, stains, and even misalignments, resulting in a naturallooking, flawless smile. Lumineers, on the other hand, are ultra-thin veneers that require minimal tooth preparation and offer a reversible option. Both options provide long-lasting results with proper care and maintenance. Teeth whitening is another popular cosmetic dentistry treatment that can transform a dull smile into a dazzling one. Over time, teeth can become stained due to factors like age, diet, tobacco use, and certain medications. Teeth whitening procedures, whether done in-office or at home with dentist-prescribed kits, effectively remove stains and brighten the teeth, helping you achieve a whiter smile. Snap-On Smiles are an innovative option for those seeking a temporary smile enhancement. These custom-made, removable dental arches fit over the existing teeth, instantly improving their appearance. Snap-On Smiles can be a great solution for special occasions or as a trial before committing to permanent procedures like veneers or lumineers. They are comfortable, affordable, and offer a wide range of design options.

Beyond the realm of traditional dental procedures, Botox has also found a place in cosmetic dentistry. Dentists trained in facial aesthetics can use Botox injections to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines and facial asymmetry. This minimally invasive treatment complements other cosmetic dental procedures by enhancing the overall aesthetics of the smile and face. When considering any cosmetic dentistry procedure, it is essential to consult with a qualified and experienced dentist. They will assess your oral health, discuss your goals and recommend the most suitable treatment options. It’s crucial to have realistic expectations and understand the potential risks and benefits associated with each procedure. Maintaining good oral hygiene practices is crucial—even after cosmetic dental treatments. Regular brushing, flossing and dental checkups are essential to ensure the longevity of the results. Additionally, avoiding habits like smoking and excessive consumption of staining foods and drinks can help preserve the brightness of your smile. Cosmetic dentistry offers a range of solutions to enhance your smile and boost your self-confidence. Whether you opt for veneers, lumineers, teeth whitening, snap-on smiles, or even Botox, these procedures can help you achieve the smile you’ve always desired. Remember to consult with a dental professional to determine the best course of treatment for your specific needs and maintain good oral hygiene for long-lasting results. Your dream smile is just a dental visit away!

Teaching Teens about Money Lessons for Healthy Financial Habits a r t i c l e C o u r te s y o f N A N C Y H A R R I S , C M F C , C D FA P R E S I D E N T, L P L F I N A N C I A L P L A N N E R , N E W FO U N D AT I O N W E A LT H G R O U P

A

s families gather for the holidays, you may find opportunities to discuss healthy financial habits with children and teens.*

Teens are becoming more independent but still need plenty of advice. With more money to spend and more opportunities to spend it, teens can easily get into financial trouble. Let’s teach them a few financial lessons. With our help, teens will soon develop the self-confidence and skills they need to successfully manage money in the real world. Lesson 1: Handling Earnings from a Job Encourage your teen to get a part-time job that will enable them to earn money for expenses. Here are some things you might want to discuss before they begin working: • Agree on what the pay should be used for. • Talk about taxes. • Introduce the concept of paying yourself first: Deposit a portion of every paycheck in a savings account before spending any of it. Lesson 2: Developing a Budget Developing a written spending plan or budget can build accountability. Here are some ways you can teach budgeting: • Consider giving out a monthly, rather than weekly, allowance. • Encourage thoughtful spending decisions and waiting at least 24 hours before making purchases. • Suggest ways they can earn more money or cut back on expenses to resolve a budget shortfall. • Teach how to modify a budget by categorizing expenses as needs and wants. • Resist the temptation to bail your teen out. Lesson 3: Saving for the Future Teens are ready to focus on saving for large goals such as a new computer or a car and longer-

term goals such as college. Here are some ways you can encourage them to save for the future: • Write down savings goals to make them more concrete. • Set goals that are based on values, not on FOMO (fear of missing out). • Offer to match savings for a long-term goal. • Offer praise when they reach financial goals. • Introduce the basics of investing by opening an investment account for them. Work with a financial professional who wants to teach good investment habits. Lesson 4: Using Credit Wisely Don’t ignore the credit card issue, as many teens today use credit cards. You can take some comfort in the fact that credit card companies require an adult to cosign a credit card agreement before they will issue a card to someone under the age of 21. And you can ask the credit card company to assign a low credit limit (e.g., $300). Here are some things to discuss with teens: • Set limits on what the card can be used for (e.g., emergencies, clothing). • Review the credit card agreement to understand how much interest will accrue on the unpaid balance, what grace period applies and what fees will be charged. • Agree on how the bill will be paid. • Demonstrate how long it will take to pay off a credit card balance if he or she only makes minimum payments by using an online calculator or by reviewing the estimate provided on each month’s credit card statement.

BUILDING SOLID FINANCIAL FOUNDATIONS We develop & review strategies, plans & solutions, as well as work to create a safe & caring environment where everyone can discuss their financial concerns, dreams & goals.

Optimize Your Immune System Immune health is metabolic health AIM TO REVERSE DISEASE, RECLAIM YOUR HEALTH, AND LOVE YOUR BODY AGAIN.

mmune health is intimately tied to overall health. The recent pandemic reminded us of this immutable fact by exploiting the concurrent pandemic of poor metabolic health. Here are several important metabolic factors:

respiratory infections. Evidence from COVID-19 demonstrated that individuals with lower fitness levels were more likely to be hospitalized and that muscle strength and muscle mass predicted length of hospitalization.

Glucose Tolerance Individuals with hyperglycemia (elevated glucose) face a 7-fold higher risk of mortality from COVID-19 compared with individuals who have well-controlled glucose levels.

Seed Oils Though polyunsaturated fatty acids are still promoted by the US Dietary Guidelines, the high omega-6 fatty acid content of seed oils is associated with decreased immune cell function.

There is an immediate negative effect on the immune system from consumption of carbohydrates, which increases blood glucose. Ingesting 100 grams of various forms of carbohydrates (glucose, fructose, sucrose, honey, and orange juice; not starch) caused a 40 percent decrease in the effectiveness of neutrophils (a type of white blood cell) against bacteria. Overfat It has long been known that obesity is associated with the following in regard to Influenza A: • Increased severity of infections • Prolonged transmission of virus • Increased viral load in exhaled breath Obesity is associated with a 3-fold increase in severe COVID-19 disease, particularly with the presence of visceral obesity. In the setting of obesity, there is increased viral replication and prolonged viral shedding. Furthermore, obesity decreases the efficacy of vaccination. Thus, an overweight/obese population will suffer increased disease burden. Physical Inactivity Exercise is associated with less frequent

GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL november/december 2023

Vitamin D Low levels of vitamin D are associated with increased risk of infection, including respiratory infections, colds, influenza, and COVID-19. The seasonal surge in influenza cases correlates well with reduced vitamin D levels in the winter months, indicating a decrease in natural defenses. Sleep Not only does sleep deprivation have shortterm negative effects on immune system functioning but also impacts overall health, including worsening insulin resistance. Strategies to Improve Immune Health 1. Reduce body fat, especially visceral fat. 2. Eat nutrient-dense, real foods. 3. Prioritize quality sleep. 4. Exercise regularly. 5. Ensure adequate vitamin D levels, preferably via exposure to natural sunlight. These interventions collectively will help you to bolster your immune system to protect yourself against the inevitable exposure to pathogens. There’s not a single intervention that can protect you quite like a healthy immune system.

n the wondrous realm of sight, our eyes play an intricate symphony, allowing us to perceive the world in its full three-dimensional glory. However, for some, this symphony doesn’t always play in perfect harmony. Glitches in this system can lead to discomfort. For individuals with binocular vision dysfunction (BVD), this phenomenon can be particularly challenging. Binocular vision dysfunction refers to the misalignment between both eyes. At least 20 percent of people suffer from it; 50 percent who have had a TBI or concussion. Symptoms can be mild or debilitating and cause issues like double vision, eye strain, dizziness, anxiety, difficulty focusing and motion sickness. Imagine being in a moving vehicle. If your eyes don’t work together due to binocular vision dysfunction, conflicting signals are sent to your brain. This discrepancy between sight and the inner ear’s motion sensing can confuse the brain, causing motion sickness and its associated discomfort and nausea. The visual inconsistencies caused by misaligned eyes can disrupt the brain’s ability to accurately perceive motion and spatial orientation. This discrepancy between what the eyes perceive and what the body experiences can lead to a feeling of motion sickness and nausea. Activities such as reading, using digital devices or even moving

GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL november/december 2023

in visually busy environments can trigger these symptoms. Remember, it’s not just motion sickness that can be caused by BVD. Are you bumping into things? Feel like your depth perception is off? Have difficulty in open spaces or large stores? Avoid crowds or driving because you can’t handle the movement around you? Popping pill after pill for headaches or neck pain? It’s important to note that while these issues can be associated with BVD, there are various other potential causes that should be considered and ruled out by a health care professional. If you or someone you know experiences any or all of these symptoms, it’s essential to seek evaluation by an optometrist trained in binocular vision dysfunction to determine the underlying cause and recommend appropriate management. A standard vision exam will NOT be adequate to diagnose and treat BVD, nor will a Neurolens machine be capable of finding subtle misalignment. A fast, free, simple quiz can tell you if you or someone you love may be suffering from binocular vision dysfunction. Take your quiz at CoulditBeMyEyes.com/eye-candy-optical. We will contact you and help you figure out your next steps.

Want More Zest in Your Life? Let go of your energy vampires b y J E N N I F E R ‘ TA Z ’ VA ZQ U E Z

W

inter is a great time to reassess your energy (zest) levels. Are you feeling stressed, drained or overwhelmed? Do you have trouble finding time to manage your “to dos,” let alone relax? Maybe you feel emotionally exhausted or are constantly reacting to people and events in your life. What if there was a way to give yourself a quick energy boost to feel more present and engaged? You can. Simply ask yourself, “How can I minimize or release the energy vampires in my life?” Energy vampires are people, places, things, and even our own habits and negative thoughts, that drain our emotional energy. They leave us feeling annoyed, apathetic, exhausted, fatigued, overstimulated, overwhelmed, reactive and / or stressed. This continuous drain on our energy can have a negative impact on our well-being. Over time, excess stress can lead to anxiety, depression, heart disease, and other health and relationship issues. Ready to boost your energy? Here is a simple and effective three-step exercise: 1. Make two columns on a piece of paper (or electronically). In the first column, list what revitalizes and motivates you (personally, professionally, socially, spiritually, etc.). Focus on: • What brings you joy, peace, calm, fun, satisfaction, fulfillment, and gratitude? • What is serving and helping you? • What is most important to you now?

• What is helping you achieve your goals, intentions and purpose? • What is helping you be present and healthy? 2. In the second column, list what drains you. Think about: • What are you tolerating? • What uncomfortable conversations are you ignoring? • Who or what are you resenting and / or avoiding? • Where do you have a fixed mindset (“can’t,” “won’t,” “must,” “should”)? • What are you doing to please others? • Who or what are you reacting to (internally or externally)? • What are you procrastinating on? • What are you doing that someone else could be doing? • What is out of alignment or balance (personally, professionally, socially, etc.)? • What is impacting your fundamental habits (sleeping, eating, meditating, moving, mindfulness)? 3. Lastly, get curious and creative! How can you turn those energy vampires into energizers, reduce or eliminate them? Focus on the things you can change, what is most important to you now, health and well-being, setting boundaries, and saying no.

Resort-Style Living for Wellness and Health It’s time to discover Kensington Gardens by JILLIAN CHANDLER

F

or more than a decade, Kelly and Mark Watson have been providing personalized care to their residents at Regent Park at Kensington Gardens. Its founding was brought about by their personal experiences with their own aging family members and the disappointment with the care and housing options that were available at the time. Out of those experiences came the notion of providing residents the highest level of personalized care, so that each day can be the best day, no matter what stage a person is in his or her life. So, they created the Personalized Care Resort Community TM (PCRC) model. Kensington Gardens Resort Living Community is a fresh, new concept for retirement, developed in Gig Harbor by the Watsons. It is a boutique Resort Community residence that offers a uniquely personalized model of luxury living in Villas. It is a place where you can continue to travel, play tennis and pickleball, engage with your new friends while aging gracefully, in a gorgeous stately home, surrounded by gardens and beautiful landscapes, with chef-curated meals daily—and should your needs change, the peace of mind that comes from knowing you will be well taken care of. “We are family, and that is our main focus,” smiles Kelly. “And life should continue to get better!” Inspired by grand European estates, the Watsons intentionally designed Kensington Gardens to provide a resort-like lifestyle, all set in the picturesque Gig Harbor countryside, surrounded by manicured gardens and walking trails, where members can easily enjoy their best days, and everything is taken care of for them. Imagine this: You wake up to the sounds of birds chirping outside your window. You open your patio door, smell the fresh air and watch a deer stroll by while you have your morning cup of coffee. You think, “What should I do today?” You decide on a walk around the grounds, then lunch with a friend downtown at your favorite place on the picturesque Gig Harbor waterfront. Maybe in the evening you’ll have happy hour with some of the neighbors and friends who live in your Villa—after all, you’ve been

wanting to try that new cocktail, so you pick up the ingredients to make it for everyone. After happy hour, a dinner that will delight your taste buds is delivered. You take it to your patio to enjoy. You didn’t have to clean today because Kensington Gardens’ cleaning crew has been through already. You don’t have to mow your lawn because the grounds are maintained for you. You didn’t have to make your dinner or even grocery shop because you have dinner brought to you every evening. “Kensington Gardens takes on the work so you can do more of the playing,” says Kelly brightly. A few months ago, Kensington Gardens celebrated the grand opening of Hawksworth Villa—the first of five Villas for independent living to be built on the 27-acre estate. Each thoughtfully planned Villa offers eight spacious suites (ranging in size from 1,160 to 2,200 square feet) that enter from a large shared great room—a gathering space for the Villa’s residents to have movie nights, family dinners, happy hours, and more. Each private suite is well-appointed with a large living space, a beautiful floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace, expansive windows with views of the landscaped grounds, a large ensuite bathroom with heated floors, a walk-in closet, and a generous private balcony or patio. Members enjoy a maintenance-free lifestyle with chef-curated meals and complimentary events. In addition to the five Villas, as Kensington Gardens expands, there are plans for an indoor pool house, pickleball courts, and a separate gathering location called the Conservatory. “Independent living in the Villas at Kensington Gardens means you move in healthy, and as you age and may need some assistance, you will receive that necessary care and assistance from our award-winning staff in your suite,” affirms Kelly. “Should the time come that you need full-time care,

Glamorous Hairdos for the

Holiday Season Your ultimate guide by ELIZABETH RAY

T

he holiday season is upon us, and with it comes a whirlwind of parties, gatherings and festivities. Whether you’re attending an elegant soiree or a casual get-together, we’ve curated a list of the best hairdos to make you the star of every holiday event. When it comes to timeless elegance, the chignon takes the spotlight. This sophisticated updo exudes class and complements any formal holiday event. Embrace the allure of old Hollywood with glamorous waves that exude confidence and sophistication.

Capture the magic of the season with a braided crown that adds a touch of whimsical romance to your holiday ensemble. This ethereal hairstyle works wonders for both long and medium-length hair. Begin by parting your hair down the center, then create two braids— one on each side of your head. Cross the braids over the top of your head and secure them with bobby pins, forming a crown-like effect. Loosen the braids slightly to achieve a soft and dreamy look that pairs beautifully with any holiday outfit. Embrace the allure of old Hollywood with glamorous waves that exude confidence and sophistication. Perfect for a glamorous holiday gala, these waves are achieved by using a curling iron to create soft curls that flow away from your face. Brush out the curls gently to achieve the iconic Hollywood wave pattern. To ensure your waves stay in place all night, use a strong-hold hairspray and consider adding a decorative hairpin for an added touch of sparkle. Inject some festive fun into your holiday look with a glitter ponytail that’s perfect for more casual gatherings. Start by styling your hair into a high or mid-height ponytail and securing it with an elastic. Then, take a fine brush and apply hair gel or hairspray along the length of the ponytail. Gently sprinkle glitter onto the product, ensuring an even distribution. This playful and eye-catching style is sure to make you the life of the party.

For those who appreciate a minimalist and modern look, the sleek bob is a sophisticated choice. This style is characterized by its clean lines and sharp angles, making it perfect for both formal and semi-formal holiday events. Whether you have a short bob or long bob (lob), ensure your hair is straight and sleek. Use a straightening iron and finishing serum to achieve a polished appearance that exudes confidence and chic charm. If you’re aiming for a hairstyle that strikes the perfect balance between elegance and casual charm, the half-up half-down twists are an ideal choice. Simply take sections of hair from both sides of your head and twist them toward the back, securing them together with bobby pins. Leave the rest of your hair flowing freely for an effortlessly beautiful look that’s perfect for holiday brunches or daytime gatherings. For an enchanting and regal appearance, the crown braid bun reigns supreme. This hairstyle seamlessly combines a crown braid with a low bun to create a look that’s fit for a queen. Start by creating a Dutch braid along your hairline, encircling the top of your head like a crown. Gather the remaining hair into a low bun at the nape of your neck. This intricate yet stunning style will have you feeling like royalty at any holiday event. Put a holiday twist on the classic fishtail braid by incorporating festive elements like ribbon or tinsel. This versatile braid can be styled into a side-swept fishtail or a centered one, depending on your preference. To add a touch of holiday flair, intertwine a strand of ribbon or tinsel with the sections of your braid. The result is a captivating hairstyle that captures the spirit of the season. The holiday season is a wonderful time to experiment with hairstyles that reflect the joy and merriment of the festivities. From classic elegance to modern chic, there’s a hairdo for every occasion. Whether you’re attending a formal gala or a cozy gathering with loved ones, these hairstyles are sure to make you shine brighter than the holiday lights. So, go ahead and embrace the spirit of the season by adorning yourself with these glamorous and enchanting hairdos.

ACHIEVING A RADIANT HOLIDAY

Glow Unveil a luminous complexion for the festive season by Patrice Allen

T

he holiday season is a time of enchantment, marked by laughter, joy, and countless memories captured in photographs. As

you prepare to bask in the warmth of festivities, there’s no better accessory than a radiant, healthy complexion that exudes confidence and allure. Achieving that coveted holiday glow requires more than just makeup—it begins with a thoughtful skincare regimen. Let’s unveil six essential tips to help you prepare your skin for that luminous holiday glow that will leave you looking and feeling your best.

82 82

GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL november/december 2023

TIP 1

Cleansing and Gentle Exfoliation

Your journey to a holiday glow commences with a clean canvas. Choose a gentle cleanser that effectively eliminates dirt, makeup and impurities. A fresh start allows subsequent skin-care products to penetrate deeply and work their magic. Follow cleansing with gentle exfoliation to remove dead skin cells that can make your skin look dull. Consider a mild chemical exfoliant, such as a glycolic acid-based product, for a radiant complexion devoid of rough patches.

TIP 2

Hydration, the Ultimate Glow Enhancer Well-hydrated skin is the cornerstone of a glowing complexion. Invest in a quality hydrating serum enriched with hyaluronic acid. This moisture-binding ingredient quenches your skin’s thirst, lending it a plump and youthful appearance. Beyond instant gratification, consistent hydration minimizes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles over time, laying the foundation for a flawless holiday glow.

TIP 3

Targeted Treatments for Specific Concerns

Address individual skin concerns with targeted treatments. Whether it’s combating acne, tackling hyperpigmentation or smoothing fine lines, incorporating specialized products can make a remarkable difference. Integrate a vitamin C serum into your routine for its brightening prowess, or introduce retinol for skin rejuvenation. A key takeaway here is patience—gradual progress is more effective and sustainable than expecting immediate transformations.

TIP 4

Shield with Sunscreen, Always In the holiday excitement, don’t overlook the importance of sun protection. UV rays can mar your glow and accelerate aging. Prioritize a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30. Apply it liberally every morning, ensuring comprehensive coverage for all exposed areas, including your neck and hands. By safeguarding your skin against the sun’s harmful effects, you’re paving the way for an enduring holiday radiance.

84

GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL november/december 2023

TIP 5

Embrace Holistic Wellness

Radiant skin goes hand-in-hand with a holistic wellness approach. Fuel your body with a nutrientrich diet abundant in fruits, vegetables and antioxidants. Staying hydrated by drinking ample water throughout the day ensures your skin remains supple and luminous. Exercise regularly to boost blood circulation, lending your skin a natural flush. Lastly, prioritize quality sleep, as it facilitates skin repair and regeneration, leading to a refreshed and revitalized visage.

TIP 6

Plan Ahead with Nourishing Masks As your calendar inches closer to the holiday festivities, indulge in a pre-event skin-care ritual with nourishing masks. Whether you opt for store-bought sheet masks or craft a DIY concoction using natural ingredients, the results are equally delightful. Masks provide an infusion of nutrients, offering an instant boost of radiance. Beyond the physical benefits, this self-care practice also offers a relaxing experience, helping you unwind before stepping into the holiday limelight.

In the symphony of holiday celebrations, your skin deserves to take center stage. By integrating these six essential tips, each contributing to a harmonious melody that orchestrates your skin’s transformation, you’re embarking on a journey toward achieving the luminous holiday glow you’ve always desired. As you embrace the festivities with a radiant and confident aura, your skin will be a testament to the joy and happiness that define the holiday season.

omewhere in the world, a HydraFacial is performed every 15 seconds. Don’t even try to do the math: This essentially amounts to 2 million treatments done globally last year alone. This is a facial, people. A FACIAL.

spiralized treatment tips equipped with “vortex technology”—the whirling force that both giveth and taketh away. The HydraFacials can be helpful for all skin types and work to boost radiance, hydrate, plump and brighten the skin.

Sure, everyone loves facials. Getting one is not only a nice treat for your skin, but it is also loaded with skin benefits. So, what makes a HydraFacial so special and different from the rest? Most facials target very specific skin concerns, and some are too harsh for those with any sort of sensitivity. The HydraFacial, however, is tolerable on most, if not all, skin types. And the risk of experiencing any negative side effects after the treatment is very low.

Generally, there are three main steps to a HydraFacial: First, the skin is cleansed and exfoliated to loosen dead skin cells. Next, the extraction. During this step, a practitioner uses a suction tool to unclog pores and reduce congestion. Finally, a serum blended with antioxidants and collagen is applied, and the device infuses them into the skin. The end result: plumped, hydrated and glowing skin.

HydraFacial took things to the next level and came out with their newest device, the HydraFacial Syndeo. Gig Harbor Aesthetics took this opportunity to get the newest device—and people absolutely love it! We hear patients say all the time, “My skin is so hydrated and absolutely glowing!” It’s a great monthly treatment to keep the pores clean and the skin hydrated. The HydraFacial involves the use of a medical-grade hydradermabrasion device that carries out a patented three-part regimen—cleansing, exfoliating, and then infusing skin with intensive serums. Back up. Hydradermabrasion? Yep. Rather than blasting the skin with grit via traditional dermabrasion, this gentler approach vacuums out pores while simultaneously pushing in potent actives that moisturize, brighten, plump and protect. The machine’s handpiece holds patented

You want to ensure you are going to a reputable clinic for your treatment. Make sure they have the brand device and the provider has experience. There is the risk of getting a “knockoff ” HydraFacial. There are many HydraFacial spoofs on apps like Groupon, so you will need to ensure you are going to a reputable place, and source, for this patented facial. Oftentimes, the med spas on coupon sites aren’t legitimate, don’t have the patented HydraFacial technology, and have outdated equipment that they purchased—so you don’t receive the most optimal treatment. The HydraFacial is a great gift, as it can benefit everyone who wants glowing, hydrated skin. Overall, HydraFacial Syndeo is an excellent skin care treatment that can help to improve the look and feel of the skin. It’s a safe and effective way to achieve a brighter, smoother and more even complexion.

Tip a Glass Brewery, winery, distillery—take your pick. Many favorites were born here in the harbor, and tastings are a great way to preview local libations. Drop in for a cocktail at Heritage Distillery, or try a local brew from favorites 7 Seas Brewing or Wet Coast. Share a Plate Inventive eateries vary from casual grab-and-go spots to fine dining and top-rated seafood shacks. Walk on the Wild Side Grab a set of wheels and glide on the Cushman Trail, which winds through the harbor and connects to the Narrows Bridge. Nearby Sehmel Homestead Park offers hiking trails, play areas and gardens to explore.

Take a Look Back Gig Harbor has a rich maritime history, showcased through gems like the Harbor History Museum or guided tours on the harbor’s Prohibition days. Tee Up Hit the greens at several courses, including Madrona Links, the Canterwood Golf & Country Club or the Gig Harbor Golf Club. Capture the Moment In one of America’s most picturesque towns, photography options abound—choose from an array of backdrops: a lighthouse framed by Mount Rainier and the Puget Sound, sailboats dotting the harbor, or a beach set against the Narrows Bridge.

FAIRBANKS Aurora Season in Alaska is a magical time when tourism slows down and serenity reigns in the backcountry. There is no better way to experience this than on the Aurora Winter Train, which travels between Anchorage and Fairbanks. For the ultimate experience, fly into Anchorage and spend a day or two. Board the Aurora Winter Train on a full day trip to Fairbanks. Along the way, enjoy the winter wonderland of Alaska’s backcountry. Guests will enjoy the comfort of a warm train car with comfy seats and picture windows to view the incredible scenery. Keep an eye out for wildlife, which are easier to spot against the pristine white snow. Riding the rails along the Susitna River is even more spectacular on a clear day when it is possible to see Mount Denali. Arrive in Fairbanks and spend a few days to experience the Aurora Borealis. Alaska Airlines offers flights from Fairbanks and Anchorage to Seattle with easy connections to other cities. Pro Tip: If you don’t want to invest in heavy winter gear for outdoor activities, many outfitters in both cities offer clothing and boot rentals.

STAY

The Marriott Anchorage Downtown is a perfect base hotel for your time visiting Alaska’s capital city. The location is so convenient, and guests can walk to the Alaska Railroad Depot or the bus station. It is also easy to walk to shops and restaurants. Enjoy city and mountain views from the hotel. The hotel underwent a complete renovation with vibrant colors that really brighten things up during winter’s extremely short daylight hours. This full-service hotel has a lovely indoor pool and fitness center. If you want to see the Aurora Borealis, then the Chena Hot Springs Resort is the place to stay. It is a scenic 60-mile drive from downtown Fairbanks to the very end of the Chena Hot Springs Road. Lodging ranges from dry cabins (no running water and outdoor restrooms) to nice hotel rooms. On-site is a pool house with access to the outdoor hot springs and an Ice Museum constructed of ice. Pro Tip: Book a shuttle through the Chena Hot Springs Resort, and it will pick you up from the train station. MARRIOTT ANCHORAGE DOWNTOWN Marriott.com CHENA HOT SPRINGS RESORT ChenaHotSprings.com

EAT

Alaska food is hearty but also has an emphasis on fresh seafood. For local color, try Humpy’s Great Alaskan Alehouse in downtown Anchorage. It is super fun—and the food is really good. Order Humpy’s Famous Halibut and Chips paired with a local brew and discover why they’re famous. Gwennie’s Old Alaska Restaurant has been around for more than 50 years. Visit for a hearty breakfast and the interesting décor that is like walking into a time capsule. Dining is limited at the Chena Hot Springs Resort to the snack bar and the Chena Hot Springs Restaurant. It is famed for its “Chena Fresh” salads that locals drive from Fairbanks to enjoy. Lettuce, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and herbs are grown fresh in the on-site greenhouse and state-of-the-art hydroponic garden. This super fresh salad is part of the resort’s commitment to a sustainable community and renewable energy. The dining room is cozy with a roaring fire in the stone fireplace. The menu is surprisingly extensive and offers everything from steaks and fresh seafood to curries. DO

Downtown Anchorage is very walkable, and you can access quite a few attractions right from the Marriott Anchorage Downtown. A must see is the Alaska Museum, an eclectic place with both art, culture and history. Allow plenty of time to tour this gem of a museum. Alaskans get outside in the winter and visitors should too. Visit the Downtown Bicycle Rental and take out a fat tire bicycle on the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail. Access the trail not far from the shop and bike 11 miles on Anchorage’s most popular trail. On a clear day you may even see Mount Denali. Interpretive signs along the trail highlight the natural and human history of the area. There is so much to do at the Chena Hot Springs Resort during the winter. A must do is the Aurora Viewing Tour. It is a 30-minute drive from the resort to Charlie Dome. Hang out in a Mongolian yurt until the Northern Lights appear. Warm clothing is available if you don’t have your own. The Geothermal Energy and Greenhouse tour is fascinating. Guests can also enjoy quintessential Alaskan activities such as dog sledding or ice fishing. The Activities Center is the hub at the resort for booking tours and activities. This pumpkin pumpkin cheesecake cheesecake This is sure sure to to be be aa hit hit at at your your is Thanksgiving and and Christmas Christmas Thanksgiving gatherings. Enjoy! Enjoy! gatherings.

For the topping: 1 cup sour cream 2 tbsp. granulated sugar 1 tsp. vanilla extract

Method • Preheat your oven to 325°F. • In a mixing bowl, combine the graham cracker crumbs, sugar and melted butter. Press the mixture into the bottom of a 9-inch springform pan to create an even crust. You can use the back of a spoon to press it down firmly. • In a large mixing bowl, beat the cream cheese until smooth using an electric mixer. Add the sugar and vanilla extract, and continue beating until the mixture is well combined and creamy. • Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Then, add the pumpkin puree, cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves. Mix until everything is fully incorporated and the batter is smooth. • Pour the filling over the crust in the springform pan. Tap the pan gently on the counter to release any air bubbles. Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for about 50 to 60 minutes, or until the edges are set but the center is slightly jiggly. • While the cheesecake is baking, prepare the topping by mixing together the sour cream, sugar and vanilla extract in a small bowl. • Once the cheesecake is done baking, remove it from the oven and carefully spread the sour cream topping evenly over the surface. Return to the oven and bake for an additional 10 minutes to set the topping. • Remove the cheesecake from the oven and let it cool to room temperature. Once cooled, refrigerate the cheesecake for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight, before serving. This will allow the flavors to meld and the cheesecake to fully set. • Before serving, carefully remove the sides of the springform pan. Slice the pumpkin cheesecake and enjoy the delightful flavors of the holiday season! november/december 2023 GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL

One-of-a-kind events can be found along the downtown waterfront by JILLIAN CHANDLER

is the season for holiday excitement, as wonderful seasonal community events return to brighten the spirits of the local community, as well as visitors who come to visit this special place we call home.

‘T

Event tickets (priced $30 each) are in the form of event bags and are on sale now. For more details and to purchase your event ticket today, email specialprojects@ghdwa.org or visit GHDWA.org/girls-night-out.

Girls Night Out returns Thursday, November 9. This is your chance to grab a friend and kick off the holiday season by shopping and dining along Gig Harbor’s picturesque waterfront. Presented by the Downtown Waterfront Alliance, this is one of their most popular events!

The Downtown Waterfront Alliance is also excited to announce a new holiday event—There’s Gnome Place Like Home. Partnering with Stitch-O-Roo and Heritage Distilling, this family friendly gnome hunt in businesses along the waterfront is free to participate and allows those young and old to “hunt” for gnomes throughout downtown businesses and complete a passport.

From 10am to 9pm, it’s time to explore all the wonderful shops, restaurants and businesses right here in the heart of Gig Harbor. “It’s a great way to kick off the holiday shopping season and shop local,” smiles Carrianne Ekberg, executive director of the Downtown Waterfront Alliance. In addition to all the shopping to be had, the day will include fun selfie stops, live music at select locations, and a whole lot more!
