PUBLISHER Share Your Gratitude Thankfulness. It means many different things to many people. Ask a child what he or she is thankful for and you will get a variety of answers: their parents, a puppy or a new toy. For adults the answers can be just as varied. For many we are grateful to have a steady job, a home and food on the table. But there are many who struggle each and every day, not knowing where their next meal will come from or where they will lay their head down each night for some much needed rest. While we are blessed to live in a beautiful community, there are things about our town that are not visible to everyone. There are children who go to school each day hungry. Families who have faced unemployment, poverty and homelessness. This is the reality. It is easy to get engrossed in all of the holiday planning that we often forget to stop and be truly aware of those less fortunate. The good news is there are many ways in which each of us can help. Next time you are at the store, put a few extra items in your grocery cart and swing by the food bank on your way home. If you see one of the Salvation Army Red Kettles, stop and drop a few dollars into it. Better yet, if you have a child with you let him or her make the donation; it is never too early to teach the act of giving.

YOUR TIME IS MONEY

Whatever you choose to do, I guarantee one thing – your act of kindness will leave you feeling more fulfilled. We at Living Local would like to wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving and extend a heartfelt “Thank You” for letting us be a part of this very special community.

GOODNEWS

Grateful Giving Edmonds police department puts service before self By Kellie French Photos by Melissa Murdock

In a few weeks, Thanksgiving Day will be upon us. It’s the time of year where it’s difficult not to be reminded of what we have to be thankful for. It’s literally a day we pause and be grateful. It pulls at our heart strings and gives us perspective on how fortunate we are to live in a country of freedom and a country of plenty. It’s also a time we host events for those who may not have a place to go to for Thanksgiving.

The Edmonds Police Association hosts such an event that is a mirror image of their motto – service before self. The Association hosts a Thanksgiving dinner for members of the Edmonds Senior Center that do not have a place to go for Thanksgiving. Corporal Ken Crystals leads the endeavor and also coordinates volunteer police officers who help plan and come and eat dinner and visit with the seniors.

The mission of the Edmonds Police Department, “Service before Self,” reflects this belief of gratitude. The message from Chief of Police Al Compaan on the department’s website is especially relevant during the Thanksgiving holiday. “We place service before self, with an unwavering and unbiased commitment to public safety, improving the quality of life for our community. This Mission Statement, and our core values of Service, Integrity, Respect, and Stewardship, truly represents who we are as an organization and who we are as the professional men and women on our team – serving the city of Edmonds and our 40,000+ residents.”

Jennifer English, the office and volunteer coordinator at the Edmonds Senior Center, mentions the event is popular with the seniors and is one of the many annual events the Senior Center coordinates. The dinner is limited to 30 people. The senior center helps facilitate preparing for the event and getting the word out to those that may not have a place to go for Thanksgiving. It gives the seniors something to look forward to. The event is hosted at Arnie’s Restaurant, which is located near the senior center on Admiral Way.

Kelley, one of the managers at Arnie’s said the seniors really enjoy the dinner and Arnie’s is very happy to be a part of a process of making such a great event happen. The Thanksgiving menu includes a relish tray, appetizer dish and soup and salad. The seniors then have the option of a main dish of prime rib, salmon and of course, turkey. Kelley mentions she has seen officers accompany and escort seniors in who physically cannot make it into the restaurant themselves. The seniors are able to swap stories and give general life advice to those who are younger than them. The life lessons learned and joy passed on are priceless. The restaurant staff considers it a great honor to be a part of the event, and it helps to tie the community together with different generations. Detective Steve Morrison of the Edmonds Police Officer Association has attended this event in the past and said the police officers’ association is “happy to provide the service.” Detective Morrison and other officers have gone in and sat with the seniors and kept them company during the dinner, shared stories and

Corporal Crystals solicits and encourages other officers to help and to join in the event. It has a true community feel and involvement. Detective Morrison himself has immensely enjoyed taking part of this event in the past and looks forward to this year’s event. The Thanksgiving turkey dinner is truly a linked chain of events with a domino effect. It starts with a simple motto – Service Before Self. It continues with police officers coordinating with a community center

As we near Thanksgiving, many of us have a lot to be thankful for. Some people are thankful just to be physically and financially able to serve. It can be as simple as having a conversation, sponsoring a family for a turkey dinner, or donating to those organizations that sponsor such projects.

Easier Than a Root Canal ESTATE PLANNING DOES NOT HAVE TO BE PAINFUL

BY PEGGY SANDERS, ATTORNEY

One of my clients, after signing her estate documents, said, “I was at the dentist last week, and this was easier than my root canal.” For some people, thinking about an estate plan can be painful. A few just don’t like seeing a lawyer – and that’s okay. But In my law practice, I find that many people put off doing their estate plans due to misconceptions about the legal estate documents. “I don’t want to sign a power of attorney, because I don’t want someone else to make decisions for me. I want to make my own decisions.” The sad truth is that if you should happen to become incapacitated through illness or accident, someone will have to make decisions for you. If you sign a power of attorney, you decide who that someone will be. Even so, that person still cannot go against your wishes. Another thing I often hear when adult children come into my office to get a power of attorney or guardianship over their parents: “I need the guardianship so that I can make my parent leave her home and move someplace safe.” Not true. Even if you are unable to make decisions or manage your finances, the law states that the person you name in a power of attorney is required to make the decisions you would make if you were able. That means that if you tell that person that you never want to live in

10

LIVINGLOCAL

a nursing home, they cannot use the power of attorney to move you into one. So, what happens if you don’t sign a power of attorney and you have an accident or get sick and are temporarily or permanently unable to manage things yourself? The alternative to a power of attorney is often a guardianship. A guardianship is a process where someone seeks to get a judgment that you are incapacitated and can no longer manage your affairs. You don’t get to say who that person would be. Guardianship is a court procedure that is expensive, and it’s public. If the guardianship is granted, your guardian must periodically report to the court on things like changes in your physical or mental condition, finances or residence. The guardian must get court permission and cannot, for instance, sell or mortgage real estate without going to court. A guardianship often takes away rights like your right to vote or the right to get married. One thing I love to hear is when the loved ones of an incapacitated elder come into my office and say: “Mom organized everything. We didn’t have to worry about a thing. She let us know exactly what she wants, and she signed documents that made sure we could do exactly what she wants.” They often proudly say that it is a gift to them from their elder loved one. Plan ahead. It can be smart and painless.

Create Your Own Personal Pension? Not as Crazy as it Sounds AS DEFINED BENEFIT PENSIONS DISAPPEAR, IT MAY BE UP TO YOU TO CREATE A GUARANTEED INCOME STREAM ARTICLE COURTESY OF THRIVENT FINANCIAL

First came pensions, or defined benefit plans, with their guaranteed income for life; then came 401(k)s with their focus on growth from the stock and bond markets. The two were meant to work together, but with defined benefit pensions quickly becoming a thing of the past, many people are left with only a 401(k) plan. While 401(k)s are an important piece of retirement savings, they were never intended to be a standalone retirement solution. The 401(k) was meant to provide supplemental retirement savings in conjunction with pensions, savings, and other income vehicles to paint a fuller retirement picture. Additional resources can be used to buttress your 401(k) and pension payments in order to build out a full retirement strategy. What could a soon-to-be retiree do about replacing that old defined benefit plan that offered guaranteed income? What if you’re one of the many people who are receiving a lump-sum from a retirement plan or have a windfall event where you are receiving a sum of money? One option could be a deferred income annuity. A deferred income annuity (DIA) allows you to set up a guaranteed income stream beginning later in life. Remember

that the guaranteed income is based on the strength and claims paying ability of your financial institution. DIA’s are traditionally funded with a lump sum payment and the contract promises to pay you a lifetime income stream starting with a date of your choice. For example, let’s say a DIA is purchased with a $50,000 lump sum. That money will then be held by your financial institution for a defined period where it will grow with interest. After a specified amount of time has passed, you can start receiving payments. This guaranteed stream of income can be used to supplement additional retirement savings.

Many options are available when it comes to retirement strategies. Cyber Security is Serious Business

We’ve seen the headlines dominate the news – hackers attack Target, Sony Pictures, Premera Blue Cross, Home Depot – the list goes on and on. In each case, personal information, social security numbers, even medical records of millions of people were exposed. In today’s world where nearly everything we do is accessed online, it’s unnerving to think just how vulnerable our information is if placed in the wrong hands. Whether you’re a business owner or simply use the Internet to pay bills, purchase goods, or connect with family and friends – all it takes is one stolen laptop, one hacked account and suddenly everything you do, everything you’ve worked so hard to protect is put at risk.

TIPS TO PROTECT YOURSELF, YOUR FAMILY AND YOUR BUSINESS ONLINE BY TREVOR CAMPBELL, INSURANCE SERVICES GROUP

Following the Sony hack last year, our agents started fielding more calls and questions from clients, especially business owners, about cyber liability insurance and the role it plays in the case of a cyberattack. One of the statistics that’s stuck in my mind is how much just one data breach can cost a business owner – an average of $5.85 million, according to security analysts.

What Is It? Cyber liability insurance is a tool that can be used to help cover costs associated with a cyberattack.

This is the world we live in and security experts say cyber attacks show no sign of slowing down. Knowing this it’s a good idea, if you haven’t already, to think about your own online security. As part of National Cyber Security Awareness Month, the

12

LIVINGLOCAL

U.S. Department of Homeland Security recently released some things every online user should know in order to keep your personal information safe year round. Online Safety Tips: • Set strong passwords and don’t share them with anyone. • Keep your operating system, browser and other critical software optimized by installing updates. • Maintain an open dialogue with your family, friends and community about Internet safety. • Limit the amount of personal information you post online and use privacy settings to avoid sharing information widely. • Be cautious about what you receive or read online – if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. From a personal standpoint, these safety tips make good sense. From a business standpoint, they are a good start but you can do more to ensure you, your employees and your clients are protected. In the Sony cyberattack the entertainment giant lost millions in film revenue, faced public embarrassment and criticism, and thousands of current and former employees filed lawsuits claiming the company failed to

protect their private information. This isn’t the kind of headline any business owner wants to help write. Cyber liability insurance is a tool that can be used to help cover costs associated with a cyberattack. Some of the benefits provided business owners include: • Covering costs your general liability policy doesn’t • Taking care of costs to notify customers • Handling legal expenses • Business interruption costs • Hiring a public relations firm to manage reputation concerns if needed If you handle client account information, employee information, you have basic business practices you want kept private, or banking information you can’t afford be made public, cyber liability insurance may be a good solution. As insurance agents, it is our job to provide information and guidance that can help protect your online safety and security. In some cases added insurance may be an option; but in all cases staying informed and aware about the information you store and share online is critical. For more information about cyber security visit the U.S. Department of Homeland Security website at: www.dhs.gov. Trevor S. Campbell, CIC, is the President of Insurance Services Group, an Edmonds based independent insurance agency serving auto, home, and business insurance clients throughout Washington and seven other western states. He chairs the Washington Education Committee for the National Alliance for Insurance Education and Research. Christmas Evolution LOCAL EXHIBIT WILL DISPLAY CHRISTMAS CARDS OF THE 1900S BY BETH BOND PHOTOS COURTESY C.A.M.

14

It is reported that the first Christmas Cards were brought to England by Queen Victoria’s husband, Prince Albert, who was German. Prince Albert also is credited with the Christmas tree tradition, and their large family must have really enjoyed decorating it with homemade ornaments. Those first Christmas cards were initiated as annual greetings to friends and family about the same time. Using pieces of lace and net fabric, and even small jewels, the first cards were lavish and undoubtedly cherished by the recipients. Later, when children were included in this exchange, they jumped in with “primitive” art, ink sketches and wax-type crayons. And so, the exchange of greetings at Christmas has continued to evolve. Arguably, the advance of technology has influenced advancements in

LIVINGLOCAL

design and commercial production. Siennatoned, tintypes of family members increased in popularity, and by the time Kodak processing became financially feasible, annual holiday cards were on their way. All too soon, Christmas cards took on a commercial trend, and businesses thanked their customers for a year of profit and encouraged them to continue patronage. Hallmark got on the bandwagon early and mass production of scenic holiday cards and jovial Santas, elves and snowmen appeared. Soon families, wishing to avoid the mundane greeting, added pre-printed names, and cards became personalized with addresses and characters. The fascinating story of the evolution

WWW.EDMONDSLIVINGLOCAL.COM NOVEMBER 2015

of Christmas cards by Northwest artists of the 1900s can now be seen in all its glory at the new Cascadia Art Museum on Sunset Drive. From November 12 through January 10, 2016, you can see a great exhibit of these small and uniquely personal cards in oils and watercolors by our own Northwest artists. It is only because these early artists exchanged samples of their crafts with other artists that we are able to display these items from private collections today.

Trade It is only because these early artists exchanged samples of their crafts with other artists that we are able to display these items from private collections today. The vintage Christmas Cards exhibit also features impressive silk-screen prints. We tend to think of a screen print on a souvenir T-shirt, often with a cartoon character or humorous saying on the front. But silk screen printing actually began in the 1900s, and they were both elaborate and extremely delicate in the creation process. The technique from the artists’ design to the finished product required highly skilled craftsmen whose message here was more ethereal and abstract. After all, they were creating to impress other artists and perhaps a sale to a private gallery. One unusual attraction in the exhibit is the display of block prints. This is an old technique requiring artistry and precision with a chisel and carving tools. Wood block printing probably dates back to ancient China where it was used primarily for printing designs on textiles. The artist creates a design in relief (raised up from the block of wood) and then presses it into pools of colored ink.

Cat in the Moon

The youngsters today would call this using a stamp and ink pad, then pressing down on cards and envelopes. At this point, I hope you realize this exhibit is far from a mundane display of a “Ho Ho” Santa or the roly-poly snowman on cardstock that we exchange today at Christmas. In fact, early holiday themes featured angels and the Nativity scene. Or a Gothic-looking Father Christmas might appear on European holiday greetings, offering a diversion from the holy or sacred-themed cards.

Photography

Paul Horiuchi is one of the artists represented in the show, and his modern collages are certainly dynamic. He wants his art to elicit feelings of serenity and inner harmony. He uses color and lines to achieve this effect for us.

Everyone deserves a beautiful photograph of themselves.

Danny Pierce was a prolific painter, printer and also contributed pieces of sculpture to this exhibit. He also lived here in the Northwest and died at the age of 93. His pieces relating to Christmas are varied and evoke feelings of nostalgia. And finally, be sure to see the works by Michael Spafford, a Seattle artist who produced his major works in 1935. His theme is “myths and metaphors,” and he has some great works depicting the “Trials of Hercules.” His medium is vibrant oils and bold pen and ink drawings of abstract figures. These are only three of the more than a dozen artists who have contributed nearly 100 unique items on display for the “Vintage Christmas Cards by Northwest Artists, 1909 to 1990” at Cascadia Art Museum that begins November 12. So save room on your calendar this holiday season to take the family out for an old-fashioned experience and get in the right mood for Christmas. Natural

Neutral

Decorate for the holidays using materials you already have By Jesse Wurm, Project Coordinator at Selle Valley Construction, Inc.

F

or me, the holidays are not complete without the festive decorations of the season. And as much as I love to shop and see the stores stocked with goodies, I’ve made a habit the last few years to skip pricey ready-made décor in favor of more natural materials. This not only saves me time and money, but it allows me to refocus the holidays on what is most important to me: spending time with the people I love. The perk to this is that decorations in neutral colors and natural materials establish a good base that can take you from Thanksgiving all the way to Christmas. This year, why not challenge yourself to use what decorations you have and create the rest? Get the kids and family involved and turn it into a fun activity for everyone. If you find that you are still in need of some staple items, look for them locally. Some of the best places to find unique vases, frames, and decorative bowls are at your local thrift and antique stores. This is where you can find the classic (and sometimes even blue-colored) Ball mason jars, funky vases in greens and purples, and other decorations you can guarantee no one else will have. Here are some decorating ideas for each holiday using materials you can find around the house or yard, that are inexpensive and fun to create. Thanksgiving Decorations: Thanksgiving is all about bounty, the horn of plenty overflowing with squash and vegetables, long tables covered with turkey and pie and families gathering together. It is also a celebration of fall, the changing of the colors,

16

the harvest of a season’s hard work, and the gentle reminder that the year is almost over. My favorite decorations for Thanksgiving incorporate natural materials. I like to fill my home with reminders of the changing season: orange pumpkins, fall leaves in yellows and reds, and wheat centerpieces. Here are some great ways to decorate your home and Thanksgiving table that you can find in your own backyard. Pine cones: A bowl full of pine cones as a centerpiece on the table is one of my favorites, or you can tie labels to them to use them as name tags for your Thanksgiving seating arrangement. If you have more time on your hands string them into a garland and display them on your fireplace mantle, or wrap them around your stair railing. Pumpkins and Seasonal Squashes: Pumpkins don’t always have to be carved and set out on the front porch. Try gathering an assortment of various sizes and colors (don’t forget to incorporate squash!) and display them on a table at the entry of your home, or use them as a centerpiece for your table. Miniature pumpkins are great for decorating the table for Thanksgiving. Each place setting can include a mini pumpkin on the plate and can even double as a name card. Fall Leaves: Spread out colorful leaves on your table for a natural table runner, or press them between wax paper, cut them out and display them in windows. You can also use leaves as a base to your favorite candle assortment, arrange them around the base of a large Mason jar or vase then prop up a colored votive candle on pebbles or river rock.

LIVINGLOCAL

Branches: Whether the branches are barren or still have some colored leaves on them, they will make a beautiful and natural addition to your décor. Grab medium-sized branches, aspen, oak, maple or manzanita and throw them in a tall vase to make a statement. Larger branches in a floor vase strung with white lights are a great visual option. Red winterberry branches are an excellent find as well, the bright red berries add a beautiful pop of color and the arrangement can easily transition into Christmas. Flowers: Glass vases, bowls, and rustic wood planters look gorgeous with fresh (or dried) fall flowers in arrangements of yellow, orange, red and purple colors. For a unique arrangement, cluster herbs and seasonal vegetables. Some of my favorites include hops, kale, green hollyhocks, artichokes, rosemary, beet greens, purple basil and chard. Christmas Decorations: When I think of Christmas decorations, I think of my old family home lit up with candles spiced with scents of ginger and pine, oozing comfort and warmth. For me, Christmas is all about creating a cozy environment for family and friends to gather. Think of ways to create warmth with lighting and candles. Include scents into your décor with pomander balls (oranges pierced with cloves and dried) or cinnamon sticks tied with ribbon and hung on the tree. Go beyond the Christmas tree and mantle too, window sills, bookcases, bedside tables, and entry sideboards are great areas to set up smaller trinkets like Santa Claus figurines, jars of holiday candy, and handmade goodies from the kids. Here are a few other ways to deck your halls this Christmas.

WWW.EDMONDSLIVINGLOCAL.COM NOVEMBER 2015

Silver and Gold: Christmas doesn’t have to be all about red and green. I have always liked how silver and gold bring in the beauty of the wintery landscape. Spray paint branches or pine cones with silver or gold and throw them in a decorative bowl or vase. Or line the mantle or table with a collection of metallic vases or tchotchkes. Candles: Winter holidays are all about nights by the fire, consider illuminating your home with candles to give a more intimate feel. They also can dress up a room and make the place appear fancier. Try topping your holiday table with candle sticks and candelabras, or an arrangement on a decorative metallic plate.

Garlands and Wreaths: Add your surname to a wreath on the front door with a glittered or colored letter and ribbon to welcome guests. Still have that Costco-sized bag of bows? Stick the bows in a circle on hard backing like cardboard and cut out the center for a homemade shimmery wreath. Evergreen garlands easily set the tone for Christmas, whether you adorn your mantel, kitchen cabinets or railing. Try a nontraditional material like your holiday cards, hung with clothespins and string along a mantle or wall.

IN FOCUS A TIME TO HONOR

Giving back to those who served By Beth Bond “You served your country, now let your country serve you!” It used to be called Armistice Day. It’s called Remembrance Day in England. But regardless of what you call it, the date, November 11 has special significance. The Treaty of Versailles was signed by France, England and Germany, ending the bloodiest of all conflicts — World War I. It was agreed upon in 1918 on the 11th day of the 11th month, and no shots were fired after 11am. In Great Britain, citizens young and old begin sporting a red poppy on their shirt or lapel in early November. The small, handmade poppy symbolizes the massive sacrifice made by allied troops on the field of Flanders. Retired war veterans sit outside grocery stores and banks handing out the poppy pins. Their prized medals, worn on the uniform or displayed in a case, cause nearly everyone to stop and put a donation down for a red poppy. They are always eager to tell you a story or two and love to answer the questions of the youngsters. Through the years, returning soldiers have not always had a warm welcome home. No conflict is popular with the masses. And the high toll of death, trauma and loss — for sometimes vague political reasons — can cause society to be bitter for years. But steps have been taken, often by those returning veterans, to make it possible for returning men and women to get long-term medical help, return to higher education, find a job and even buy a house. Such is the case right here in Edmonds. Dick Bennett, a former Marine and local Realtor, advises there are a raft of benefits out there to help a veteran buy a house. Veterans may be entitled to advantages such as no money down and interest breaks. Like many, Bennett said his dream is to have an “army” of volunteers reaching out to the homeless vets on the street and help them get the government resources that are out there. Mentoring a fellow veteran who is going through hard times is very rewarding to a fellow service man or women. At vapp.com (the Veterans App) is an all-inclusive site for veterans. Powered by the foundation Operation Military Family that is based right here in Edmonds, it is the one place a veteran can go to and get all his or her questions answered — often by another veteran. Sources for job training, education and civilian transition is all right at your fingertips. A grateful society wants our veterans to take advantage of the practical and emotional help at vapp.com and other agencies. Thank you for your service and sacrifice.

Amanda Paavola For senior Amanda Paavola, athletics has provided her with many life lessons — including time management. “One of the biggest challenges I’ve discovered has been determining what it truly means to be a yearround student athlete,” said Amanda, who has received several honors as a volleyball player. “Doing well in school has always been important to me but can sometimes be challenging when sports has such a prominent presence in my life as well. Maintaining a healthy balance between athletics and academics has always been difficult, but I’ve learned that to be successful, I’ve had to discover my limits and learn how to acknowledge them.” And it appears she has been quite successful. With a 3.7 GPA, Amanda is a Full-IB Diploma Candidate, a member of the National Honors Society, and past president of the Key Club. She hopes to play volleyball for a Division 1 or Division 2 school and plans to major in chemical oceanography and minor in marine biology.

After volunteering with the Seattle Aquarium Youth Ocean Advocates this past summer, Amanda said her passion for oceanography blossomed. “I’m considering becoming a marine chemist, which basically means that I want to study how the oceans were formed and what chemicals and such determine their composition today,” said Amanda.

him along the path to success. “Just like in athletics I have had many teachers who have served as role models, and I feel extremely fortunate to have been supported by so many people,” said Spencer who plans to pursue a degree in criminology with the ultimate goal of becoming a police officer, detective or FBI agent.

Reflecting on her years as a volleyball player, Amanda is grateful to have been a member of her school’s team these past few years. “I’m beginning to realize just how much this sport, this team, and these coaches mean to me and am looking back at the past three years with absolutely no regret.”

Whatever path Spencer chooses, he is sure to be a success. “Wrestling and football have taught me the value of competing, especially when you find yourself on your back and the only way to change that is by fighting off it,” said Spencer.

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 19

As a football player and a wrestler, senior Spencer Schultz has learned that it is important to lead by example — a philosophy that has earned him the role of captain on both teams this year. “People sometimes want different things out of playing a sport than what you want out of it, and if your goals don’t line up it can be frustrating,” said Spencer. “I have had to learn to focus on taking care of my own responsibilities so that I can lead by example.”

13 Musical Fun CASCADE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA PROVIDES HOLIDAY ENTERTAINMENT AND MORE BY BETH BOND PHOTO COURTESY VERONICA HO Nothing puts you in the mood for Christmas like hearing holiday music, and there will be a great opportunity to kick off the holiday season with our own Cascade Symphony Orchestra. The Cascade Symphony Orchestra is beginning its 54th year at the Edmonds Center for the Arts. We are so fortunate to have such a quality group right here locally and in a lovely venue that offers reasonable prices. The Cascade Symphony Orchestra is under the expert musical direction of Michael Miropolsky, and he has put together a tantalizing array of talent for the 2015 and 2016 season. Each of the five concerts has a beginning introduction about that night’s’ production presented 30 minutes before the curtain goes up. This permits the audience to have a better understanding of the music and allows latecomers to get seated quickly. Tickets can be purchased for single concerts or

for the five concert series. The full program can be found online at www.ec4arts.org or from the Edmonds Center for the Arts box office at 425.275.9595. Adult tickets are $115 and seniors are $95 for the entire season. Single concert tickets are $27 for adults, $22 for seniors, students with school I.D. are $15, and youth 12 and under are $10. These are certainly reasonable prices for the high standard of musical entertainment you will experience. The symphony organization uses some of its income to provide scholarships for worthy students, intent on furthering their education in the musical arts. Although not the first in the series, the concerts of December 13 and 14 are particularly popular with families. Entitled, “Holiday Pops” this presentation truly has something for everyone. Children will enjoy the selections from “Babes in Toyland,” and no one can be unmoved by the “Hallelujah Chorus” from the Messiah. What a

great holiday treat for the whole family right here in Edmonds to have classic music of such high caliber. Looking ahead, on February 20, 2016 at 3pm is the always popular Children’s Concert. One feature of this favorite concert is the narration of “Peter and the Wolf ” by Dave Dolacky. Solos by the young “Rising Stars” competitors will also be on tap. The finale is the Cascade Percussion Ensemble with some rousing renditions of the loud and noisy variety. If you’ve never been to see a production at the Edmonds Center for the Arts, then this is your chance to start a wonderful and enriching tradition for your family.

COVER STORY SHOP SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY! Support Local Economic Growth Article and photos by Mark Preising

Saturday, November 28, 2015 is Small Business SaturdayŽ. It is an important opportunity to support local businesses with patronage. By supporting local business on this date, we demonstrate as consumers how important local businesses are to our community, and we support the growth of job development within the community. American Express helped launch Small Business Saturdays on November 27, 2010. The U.S. Small Business Association also provides advertising and marketing support for the event. The idea was originated to offset the massive spending by consumers on Black Friday and Cyber Monday at big box retailers and online outlets. In 2011, the date was officially designated with huge support from Washington D.C. to Washington state, including the governors, mayors, congress and the President. Local consumers across the nation supported their neighborhood businesses in 2014 by spending an estimated $14.3 billion at small businesses. When one chooses to shop in his or her locally owned stores, they are not only saving themselves time by not travelling to other destinations, but they likely are also saving money. Traveling out of town for one’s shopping needs requires the cost of gas, time away from home or work and, depending upon where you go, could also mean a higher sales tax. If you are an Internet shopper, you may save time, but not always money. After all, those shipping costs can quickly add up. Why not make a conscious effort to do as much

local shopping as possible? The benefits to you and your community are many. Small business owners are known for their contributions to the many nonprofit agencies that in turn help our friends, neighbors and colleagues. In fact, statistics show those locally owned and operated stores are two and half times more likely to donate to nonprofit agencies than the large chain stores. Small business owners are the ones who take the money they earn and reinvest it into their community with their own purchases of goods and services. Can the same be said for the “big box” stores? By shopping at locally owned stores you are not only helping to stimulate the local economy, but you may likely be helping other people in the community who rely upon several of our non-profits during the down times in their lives.

With its Art Walks, the next one of which is scheduled for November 19, many travel to our locally owned stores. There are also several networking breakfasts one can take advantage of to learn more about the locally owned businesses and meet their owners. The Edmonds Chamber of Commerce is also sponsoring a Preferred Business Directory booklet for Friday November 6, to help advertise local businesses.

for the Arts, Edmonds Family Medicine, Chermak Construction, The Edmonds Yacht Club, The Driftwood Players, The Little Gym, Heritage Bank, the Edmonds Conference Center, Panera Bread, the Rusty Pelican, Wells Fargo Advisors, My Edmonds News, the Woodway Influence, Hometown Values Coupon Magazine and Chase Bank. The Downtown Edmonds Business Association and the Edmonds Area Chamber of Commerce both support ShopSmall. Last year 100 small business in Edmonds participated. Some of the highlights included: free cookies and coffee at Citizens Bank of Edmonds, Paint Your Art Out offered 20 percent off on artist samples, Sacred Heart Gifts offered items at 50 percent off, Sterling’s also offered 50 percent off fall items and 30 percent off Christmas items; Silver Leaf Gems offered customers free holiday earrings with a $25 or more purchase.

The idea was originated to offset the massive spending by consumers on Black Friday and Cyber Monday at big box retailers and online outlets.

Locally here in Edmonds, the Chamber of Commerce and The Downtown Edmond Business Association are actively promoting major events to help drive shoppers to its downtown business core.

The city also plans a seasonal Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, complete with a visit from Santa, (with free pictures with the jolly ole soul for the kiddies), snacks, and carols on November 28 at downtown’s Centennial Plaza, on the corner of Fifth Ave. N. and Bell St. The event is sponsored by Shooby Doo Catering, Dewar, Meeks, & Ekrems, the Edmonds Center

In 2014, American Express states that 88 million people shopped small on Small Business Saturday®. They are encouraging local small businesses across the country to participate, expecting an even greater turnout this year. American Express provides free marketing collateral and materials from their website including: printable signs, “Save the Date” cards, e-mail templates and social posts, Shop Small logos, Shop Small Merchandise, (including tote bags, buttons, balloons, a poster and a pennant), while supplies last, and Event Guides. Small businesses can also sign up to receive free ads throughout the year and be posted on the Shop Small Map hosted through the website. The ads and a listing on ShopSmall.com are free for participating small businesses. ShopSmall.com also provides ideas for the event in their “Small Business Event Kit” online. So, let’s all get together this holiday season and support our local businesses who help keep our communities vibrant with growth and economic opportunities. Tips to Keep You Healthy

What is Your Goal? MAKING THIS NEW YEAR’S FITNESS RESOLUTION STICK

BY SUSAN MOORE, BETTER GYM, GIG HARBOR

32

Every year millions of people make getting in shape their New Year’s resolution. It’s the “I’ll start Monday” mentality that we battle the rest of the year but on a much larger scale. But what exactly does getting in shape mean to us? What is our motivation? What are our goals exactly? Asking the why is probably the most important question to think through in order to optimize success. Learning the how to facilitate the why and subsequently devising a productive plan could turn this year’s resolution into next year’s reason to be thankful. It’s actually easier than you could have ever imagined. First, you need to write down your goals and how you think you can accomplish them. Spend some time researching people who have

done what you plan to do and how they did it. What were their struggles? One of the most crucial things to consider is safety. You need to make sure that the exercises you decide on are not inherently dangerous. Are you going to be using a video, going to a class, hiring a trainer or even buying a piece of equipment? Do your due diligence. I don’t typically recommend any videos that have strength training exercises in them like push-ups, pull-ups, lunges or squats. If you haven’t been exercising regularly, chances are your body needs a refresher on the proper mobility, flexibility, strength and reflexes to do these movements under qualified guidance. If professional guidance is absolutely off the table, video yourself doing the movements and watch the videos. If anything about the movements doesn’t look right, it isn’t.

We were all born with the ability to know what right or wrong looks and feels like, but unfortunately we all have to sit for long periods of time in our society so we tend to lose the ability to know what right or wrong feels like. Thankfully, we never lose the ability to know what right or wrong looks like. If when you watch the video and it doesn’t look like the movement you were trying to do, do some more research and continue to work on these movements like you would if learning any new skill. This is the skill of strength. Keep videoing and keep refining. You should eventually learn how to do the movements correctly and in the process get stronger, healthier and burn some calories. If you feel like you would have more success in a group setting (my personal favorite) or are wanting to join a class, make sure the instructor is a subject matter expert in what they are teaching. If you don’t feel comfortable asking for their qualifications, Google is a beautiful thing, and you can usually get all the information about your instructor you are looking for. I’m pretty good with instructing TRX and if your go to their website you’ll find that I can back that up with the amount of education I have in it. Most instructors don’t know what they don’t know, and just because they look fit doesn’t mean they know

how to instruct, correct, modify or when to refer people to a medical professional. I teach a lot of professional education around the country to health and fitness practitioners and approximately 80 percent don’t know how to properly teach or even do a squat themselves. The main reasons people don’t stay motivated is they lack direction or get injured. If you are in a class, make sure quality of movement is more important than quantity. EFFECTIVE POSITIVE DISCIPLINE STRATEGIES FOR CHILDREN

For 3-5 year olds A unique literacy-based learning program

BY MIRIAM DRESSLER, DIRECTOR OF LEARNING & EDUCATION, BLOOM EARLY EDUCATION

Children are constantly exploring and testing both the world and you to see what works and what doesn’t, learning what’s right and wrong, safe and dangerous, appropriate and inappropriate, and so on. In fact, children are supposed to be doing this in order to learn anything at all about the world and the people in it. As the parent, you are the “guardian” of the boundaries, limits and rules, so naturally will be put in the position of enforcement and giving consequences. There are two kinds of discipline — negative and positive. Both are effective in their own way, and both have long-term consequences for your child. Negative discipline, like yelling, spanking and other punishments, is effective in the moment because it almost immediately stops the misbehavior. In the long run, children who experience a lot of negative discipline learn to lie, be underhanded, pass blame and work very hard at not getting caught! Being honest becomes difficult for these children. The fear of the negative punishment will cause them to look for a way out of trouble. Positive discipline is a longer process and takes focus, intention and patience. The longterm goal is to teach children self-discipline by getting them to understand and experience the consequences of their behavior. This is quite a task! Positive discipline is not for the faint-hearted. It takes calm and patience. Your focus is on “breaking” your child’s misbehavior, and not your child. Effective positive discipline needs to be consistent, predictable for the child, and handled in

Mon-Fri, 8am-12pm

the same way by all the adults in the home. If there are too many inconsistencies, your child will quickly figure out how to act out to get what they want. Try these two techniques and note the positive changes in your child: Natural Consequences are things that just happen because children are being careless, not listening to warnings, or just being children. It’s often far more beneficial to let it happen than not, as these experiences are powerful teachers, provided these consequences are not physically harmful, of course. Your role is to explain to your child what has happened and then pause to let them think. Example, “Michael, your cup fell over because you’re not sitting still at the table. Now your clothes are wet and there’s no more milk.” Pause, and then take the next step.

Language Studio Classes for young learners 3-12 years old Spanish, German, English, Russian, Mandarin, Sign Language and more...

Parent Education Workshops • Webinars Support groups Family events resources Annual memberships available

Logical Consequences are consequences that are attached to specific actions or misbehaviors. The trick here is that they need to be logically connected. If your child makes a mess, the logical consequence is to have him clean it up. Everything stops for the child until clean-up has happened. It’s a simple act of “Do and Undo.”

Now Enrolling for Fall 2015

These two simple strategies give you, the parent, a starting point to handling challenging behaviors and can help you rein in your own emotional response. Both of you will be happier and calmer for it in the long run!

Mindful Eating

Eating mindfully means to be 100 percent conscious and aware of the foods we’re eating and why. It’s about being present with our food. This can take a lifetime to learn and some of us may never get it. But, eating mindlessly can truly be detrimental to our physical and emotional health. Therefore, it’s vital, especially during the busy, stressful holiday season to attempt to pay more attention to what goes into our bodies simply for the sake of our health.

TIPS TO MAINTAIN PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL HEALTH THIS HOLIDAY SEASON BY DARCI BARMAN, MSN, RDN, LD, REGISTERED DIETITIAN NUTRITIONIST

This is not a holiday diet plan; it will not deprive you of the things you truly enjoy every holiday season. It’s not meant to help you lose weight or to eat more healthfully this season. It approaches food in a more thoughtful manner, asking ourselves “why” we’re eating something in attempts to reduce dangerous emotional and overeating. Eat off a plate

LIVINGLOCAL

Location! Be strategic about where you stand at holiday gatherings. If you can’t control yourself around all the candied nuts, peanut brittle and cookies, don’t socialize near the dessert table. Instead, find a cozy place next to the fire or on the couch. Be honest and true to yourself Would you feel guilty if you threw away the ginger molasses cookies your great aunt went through all that trouble to make? Don’t! You owe it to yourself to respect what goes in your body and to eat only the things you love. Ask yourself, “Am I enjoying this?” If the answer is no or maybe, put the fork down. Save what you consider an “indulgence” to be truly satisfying to you. Leave the grumbling at home

Every diet book says this, but there is so much truth to it! When we eat off a plate, we are tuned into the amounts of food we are consuming. Pacing around eating a little of this and a little of that can sneak in a whole meal’s worth of food! Whenever appetizers are out, pick up a plate,

you’ll be surprised at how quickly it adds up!

Don’t show up to a holiday party with a grumbling stomach. This sets us up to overeat by overcompensating for our hunger. Have a light snack just before you arrive and you’ll automatically eat less.

Let others learn from your mindful ways. We all have those people in our lives that want to feed us with love. If you’re not hungry or don’t desire something, firmly say “no thank you.” No one will disown you for being strong.

Provider For Most Medical Plans

Before heading to a get together, pinpoint one thing that you know will be there and that you really want. Desire makes it taste that much sweeter. Listen to your body If we pay attention to when we are hungry, or full, we tune into the “other” reasons we may be eating such as boredom or stress.

It approaches food in a more thoughtful manner, asking ourselves “why” we’re eating something in attempts to reduce dangerous emotional and overeating.

Always have a game plan At the end of the day, the main thing you need is a game plan. Before every gathering, have an idea of what you’re planning on eating, drinking and how you’re going to say “no” if you have to. Make a plan to check-in with yourself from time to time and to feel good about your decisions.

TRAVELANDLEISURE

A TROPICAL PARADISE

Kauai, Hawaii offers both serenity and adventure By Colin Anderson & Stephanie Krebs-Anderson There is a lot to be thankful for living in the Northwest, but November weather is not one of them. The days are short, the temperatures are chilly, and gray drizzle makes things just wet enough to mess up your day. On these days we remember the wonderful islands of Hawaii where it’s almost always 80 degrees and sunny. As a couple that has a serious travel bug, it’s rare we visit the same place twice. But after our first trip to the island of Kauai, we were back again this past May, less than two years later. There are slices of paradise on each of the Hawaiian Islands, but for those looking to step out from behind the all-inclusives, dinner shows, and crowded Waikiki and add some

adventure to your vacation, the north shore of Kauai simply can’t be beat. In and around Hanalei Bay you will find some of the most spectacular beaches and scenery in the world. You can surf, snorkel, scuba, hike, bike and fly. This truly is a remarkable island, and your visit will bring you a new found appreciation for nature. His Perspective As a traveler, I like to see and experience as much of an area as I can because who knows if I’ll ever be back again. Relaxing on the beach is always part of the trip, but I can only lounge for so long before wanting to find the next

experience. This might be my favorite thing about Kauai. You can drive up and down the North Shore, find plenty of places to explore, and if you feel like a little beach time, just pull over and plop down your chair and towel. Kauai is known for adventure both by sea and land. One of my favorite excursions we’ve taken is something you wouldn’t likely come across at the concierge desk. Our group of four hired a local by the name of “T” to take us into the center of the island and float down a centuryold irrigation canal originally created to bring water from the mountains to the taro fields and pineapple plantations in the valleys below. The drive was on one of the roughest and craziest

roads I have ever been on with washed out sections the size of a Mini Cooper. We passed through the area where they shot the entrance to Jurassic Park, and we were soon riding boogie boards down a 2-mile canal. We passed through several pitch black tunnels and ended at a beautiful swimming hole.

year to camp out at Kalalau Beach — one of the most beautiful beaches and backdrops you will ever see. The trail is steep and rocky, and you traverse streams that can swell at a moment’s notice. Both times we’ve done this hike it has down poured for a short time making for an even wilder experience.

Another great land adventure is hiking the first 2 miles of the Kalalau trail. This trail begins where the road literally dead ends. It’s an 11mile hike that wraps around the famous Na Pali Coast which you can also tour by sail boat, zodiac, kayak or helicopter. This hike is rated a difficulty 9.5 out of 10 by the Sierra Club, but the first 2 miles are doable if you are in decent shape and have hiking experience. Permits are needed to go further than 2 miles, but thousands of people make the 11-mile trek each

Back in the water, you’ll find a colorful array of fish snorkeling at Ke’e beach, excellent surf and boogie boarding waves in the picture perfect 2-mile crest beach of Hanalei Bay, and will more than likely come across giant sea turtles snorkeling at Anini Beach. Having such an immense turtle swimming just feet away from you is really an amazing experience.

upscale fine dining, and shops carrying trinket souvenirs to fine art. You’ll notice that only a couple bars stay open past dinner, but after a day of exploring and sunny beaches, most retire early instead of seeking out the nightlife. If you get the chance to visit this island, enjoy the beaches, but don’t be afraid to step out and find your own adventure. Her Perspective When my husband and I settled on a vacation to the island of Kauai and began to talk to friends and colleagues about our trip, one of the most common things we heard from other visitors of the island was “Kauai is incredible.” After having visited the island twice, I agree. The Hawaiian island of Kauai is one of the

WWW.EDMONDSLIVINGLOCAL.COM NOVEMBER 2015

In and around Hanalei Bay you will find some of the most spectacular beaches and scenery in the world. You can surf, snorkel, scuba, hike, bike and fly. most beautiful places on earth. The island has natural presence that truly must be seen to be believed. Kauai served as the backdrop to many famous movies (Jurassic Park and Blue Hawaii for example) so you likely have seen this spectacular place before without even realizing it. If you are in search of a tropical paradise that comes complete with stunning, high lush green mountain peaks that seem to always be draped in a shroud of mist and that are contrasted against a coastline of white sand beaches and rolling turquoise blue ocean waves, look no further than Kauai.

The “Garden Island” is the perfect backdrop for burying your toes in the sand and your nose in a book while the ocean crashes to the shore. You can boogie board, surf and drink beer from your cooler while you get far too much sun and apply too little sunblock. You will probably have more than one encounter with some of the most colorful chickens you have ever seen, as they inhabit the island and seem to be its most numerous residents. These free-range creatures will probably be your morning alarm clock too. They seem to be lurking everywhere, including outside your window. Impressive sunrises on the island make for a perfect excuse for getting up early for a run, taking a yoga class on the beach, or walking down to the nearby beach to stand in the ocean and watch the sun come up for the day.

Northwest farmer’s market (hello papayas!). Is creating your adventure just not your style? There are also tons of resources and companies that will ensure your vacation has just the right amount zip-lining, surfing, fishing, snorkeling or whatever you enjoy. If you are looking to have a rocking party where you stay up late and hop from club to club, this is not the place for you. And no one is going to walk up to you and try to sell you some trinket you don’t need. Kauai’s charms are much more natural and serene – and when you leave you’ll find yourself planning the next trip before you get home.

Opting for a vacation rental by owner over a hotel will usually include the perks of having a little more privacy, a lot more space, and typically a cache of beach gear to let you create your own experience. Plus, if you have a kitchen, it can easily be stocked. The island boasts multiple farmers markets, with one happening most nights of the week. The markets are a great chance to be amazed at how much better things grow in the tropical climate (hello giant onions!) and to find and try fruit not typically found at your regular Pacific
