Sin embargo, Miguel Ă ngel Zotto siempre regresa a su origen, a sus raĂ­ces‌ Y esta vez, precisamente, para ofrecer su nuevo espectĂĄculo ²HVWUHQR PXQGLDO TXH EDXWL]y “RaĂ­ces Tangoâ€?. En el nuevo espectĂĄculo participa un elenco totalmente argentino: el Sexteto de Pablo Valle, el bailarĂ­n AtucĂĄ Indio Olegui, oriundo del Chaco y criado en la Selva misionera, pero radicado en Europa, el grupo de folclore de FabiĂĄn Serna y un grupo de parejas de bailarines. He has lived in MilĂĄan for several years now, where he has his school, his milonga and rehearsal space, along with his partner, Daiana GĂşspero, dancing partner and mother of his twin daughters, Lara y Brisa. Nevertheless, Miguel Ă ngel Zotto always returns to his origin, his URRWVÂŤ $QG WKLV WLPH PRUH VSHFLϧFDOO\ WR SUHVHQW KLV QHZ VKRZ ² ZRUOG SUHPLHUV ² ZKLFK KH QDPHG “RaĂ­ces Tangoâ€?. This coming 11th January it will open at the Teatro Lola Membrives, with just twenty SHUIRUPDQFHV :HGQHVGD\V WR 6XQGD\V WR WKHQ VWDUW RĎą RQ WRXU URXQG Italy, Greece and Spain. The new show has a totally Argentine cast: the Pablo Valle Sextet, the dancer AtucĂĄ Indio Olegui, originally from Chaco, having grown up in the Misiones rainforest, but settled now in Europe, FabiĂĄn Serna’s folk group and a group of dancing couples. Over twenty performers onstage. The dancer and choreographer takes a stand with, as always, what is ours, tango culture with the passion intact‌

You’ve settled in Milan, where you have your school, family, everything, but you always return to Buenos Aires, and this time to present a new show‌ The show is based on a little story and deals with that thing of uprooting, of the immigrant who arrives, and it’s called Roots because if I’m not with my land, with my roots, I can’t breathe‌ I have to return to be with my family, my friends, to charge the batteries‌ Here I have everything, I’m part of Buenos Aires!

El tango fue aceptado afuera y acå es algo cotidiano, de todos los días, no era un hecho DUWtVWLFR (VWD PLVPD KLVWRULD OH SDVy D *DUGHO D 3LD]]ROOD D %RUJHV a Yupanqui, y a tantos otros que emigraron‌ Esta es la historia de nuestra idiosincrasia. Todo lo que pase afuera, despuÊs es aceptado en nuestro país.

But your personal history is the opposite, that of the Argentine who emigrates‌ Yes, for a fundamental reason of work. But this story begins in practical terms with tango: at the beginning of the 20th century it was DFFHSWHG ϧUVW E\ WKH )UHQFK DULVWRFUDF\ 7DQJR ZDV DFFHSWHG DEURDG and here it was something mundane, in daily use, it wasn’t an artistic thing. This same story happened to Gardel, to Piazzolla, to Borges, to Yupanqui, and so many others who emigrated‌ It’s the story of our idiosyncrasy. Everything that happens abroad, afterwards is accepted in our country.

Artistically, how is it put together? Roots is a novel show, strong, with tango and folk interwoven, with absolutely new choreography, we dance zamba, milongas with percusVLRQ VRPHWKLQJ RI ϊDPHQFR WRR $QG WKH VWRU\ EHJLQV ZLWK WKH LQGLJenous people, it stars a Guarany who lives in Austria, he’s nearly 70 and I found him and brought him to Buenos Aires. Like I was saying, it’s the story of the Argentine people that is always repeated!

Daiana has evolved a lot in recent years‌ Daiana has grown artistically, she has developed fantastically, physically she’s a splendid mother, dedicated 100% to her daughters during WKH GD\ DQG ZH¡UH DW DQ LPSRUWDQW OHYHO DUWLVWLFDOO\ 7KHUH¡V D FRQϧdence between us, a considerable artistic complicity. Our choreography is absolutely the two of us, interwoven, there’s a lot of trust and love between us, and that is seen onstage.

Soy el mismo Zotto de siempre, con el mismo entusiasmo, la misma locura, lo poquito que ganĂŠ allĂĄ en Italia lo estoy invirtiendo otra vez acå‌ ÂĄMe quedarĂŠ pelado de vuelta! Hacemos una milonga los dĂ­as viernes, prĂĄctica los domingos y los sĂĄbados organizamos eventos especiales, con artistas que llevĂŠ de acĂĄ para Italia, como por ejemplo Juan Carlos Copes, Gloria y Eduardo, Lorena y Pancho‌ Daiana hace el festival de la mujer y tambiĂŠn participan muchos artistas argentinos. La nuestra es una casa argentina, de 400 metros cuadrados, de lunes a lunes, todos los dĂ­as tango. Todo el dĂ­a. She’s not just a dancing partner‌ No, no. We’re 50-50. A tango couple in every sense. And what about Zotto, today in your 50s‌? I’m 58. I’m the same Zotto as ever, with the same enthusiasm, the same craziness, what little I’ve earned over there in Italy I’m investing again here‌ I’ll end up skint again! And I’ll start over again‌ (He laughs). How’s the school in Milan doing? Very well. Tango has grown considerably in Italy. We have some 400 pupils. We run a milonga RQ )ULGD\V SUDFWLFH VHVVLRQV RQ 6XQdays and on Saturdays we organize special events, with performers I’ve taken over to Italy from here, like Juan Carlos Copes for H[DPSOH *ORULD DQG (GXDUGR /RUHQD DQG 3DQFKRÂŤ 'DLDQD GRHV the women’s festival and many Argentine performers take part. Ours is an Argentine house, 400 square meters, every day of the week tango. All day. What advice would you give the young dancers who are just starting to get into tango? Nowadays in the milonga that thing of rotation is getting lost, of IROORZLQJ WKH GLUHFWLRQ URXQG WKH GDQFH ĎŠRRU DQG WKH \RXQJVWHUV have to learn that. The kids that dance well, unfortunately they don’t dance: they go to a milonga to do networking and PR. The FRXSOH WKDW VWDQG RXW DUH WKH H[DPSOH IRU WKRVH ZKR DUH VWDUWLQJ ZH VD\ WKH\¡UH DW WKH VKDUS HQG WKH H[DPSOHV :H KDYH WR IROORZ WKH H[DPSOHV 3XSL 7HWp 7RWRÂŤ <RX KDYH WR ZDWFK WKRVH SHRSOH who’ve been dancing all their lives because they leave you something, little secrets... I don’t mean copy, but rather absorb how we handle ourselves and move around. We have to pass on the baton from one generation to another, to the new generations, but they have to be open. The old codes mustn’t be forgotten, they created the people at grass roots level. The dancing is being done YHU\ XSULJKW PDNLQJ ϧJXUHV RQ WKH VSRW EDFNZDUGV <RX FDQ¡W GR that‌ Surely it can’t be that you go to a milonga in Europe and the people are rotating properly and not here‌! Tears and smiles‌ As the old vals says, it was an unforgettable homage that moved everyone to tears and smiles. Juan Carlos Copes, throughout his long performing career, has received many important tributes, however on 27th November last the great dancer, teacher and choreographer was the star of a very special one, because it was given by his own colleagues, many who worked with him or learned from his teaching. It was part of the “Bailemos Tango Festivalâ€?, organized by his daughter, Johana Copes, as a central event in the milonga held that night at the /HyQ 5HJLRQDO &RPPXQLW\ &HQWHU 7KH WHDFKHUV WDNLQJ SDUW LQ WKH )HVWLYDO JDYH DQ H[KLELWLRQ LQ KRQRU RI WKH 0DHVWUR -RKDQD &RSHV and Alejandro BerĂłn, Alejandra Armenti and Daniel JuĂĄrez, and Magdalena Valdez and Roberto Zuccarino. Para *XLOOHUPR 0RQWHOHRQH el camino de la fotografĂ­a empezĂł en los aĂąos 80 con un largo recorrido que lo llevarĂ­a primero por la moda y el mundo fashion, pasando luego por distintas aristas del arte y la estĂŠtica, siempre con la sensualidad como sello, hasta que el tango llegĂł a su cĂĄmara cuando le pidieron que retratara un espectĂĄculo que hacĂ­an en el Teatro Margarita Xirgu, con el que querĂ­an KDFHU XQD PXHVWUD IRWRJUiϧFD (VH GHVSHUWDU DO WDQJR OR OOHYy D LQYHVWLJDU desde la mĂşsica al ambiente de escenarios y milongas, para poder atrapar, como ĂŠl cuenta, “ese mundo Ăşnico que es cada pareja de tangoâ€?. Lo que me llevĂł mĂĄs tiempo fue entender los compases y el “tempoâ€? de la mĂşsica, tuve que anteponerme a lo que iba a suceder en el prĂłximo compĂĄs. Cuando empecĂŠ escuchar la mĂşsica, empecĂŠ a encontrar instantes muy especiales de esta danza. ¢7X LPDJHQ HV ϧHO WUDWD GH FDSWDU HO PRYLPLHQWR ORV FXHUSRV OD P~sica? Algo asĂ­. Siempre les digo a las parejas que todas son distintas, trato de LGHQWLϧFDU ODV IRUPDV TXH D HOORV PiV OHV SHUWHQHFHQ \ HVR WLHQH TXH YHU con esos cuerpos particulares, con ese abrazo, con ese sentimiento. Trato GH FDSWDU HVH PRYLPLHQWR \ GH VHUOH ϧHO D HVR TXH FDGD SDUHMD WLHQH &DGD uno tiene algo especial y hay que buscarlo, sea en estudio, en un show, un escenario o la pista de una milonga.

First it was fashion... Advertising campaigns with iconic images, then dance, drama, murals and stage-sets. For *XLOOHUPR 0RQWHOHRQH the path of photogUDSK\ EHJDQ LQ WKH V ZLWK D ORQJ URXWH WKDW ZRXOG OHDG KLP ϧUVW WKURXJK WKH ZRUOG RI IDVKLRQ SDVVLQJ WKHQ WKURXJK GLĎąHUHQW VLGHV RI DUW DQG DHVWKHWLFV always with sensuality as a hallmark, until tango reached his camera when he was asked to take shots of a show being done at the Teatro Margarita Xirgu, for a photographic display that was to be mounted. QuerĂ­a hacer una muestra que hablara, por un lado, de las parejas que estĂŠticamente me dan una imagen, un instante robado en esas exhibiciones maravillosas que hacen en Canning. Son parejas que se me cruzan por delante y con su movimiento y belleza me dan una imagen sĂşper estĂŠtica. Por otro lado, hay ciertos momentos robados de lo que pasa cotidianamente ahĂ­ dentro. Imagino que la gente que va la milonga tiene el anhelo de estar ahĂ­ dentro, y esa sensaciĂłn se convierte luego en un abrazo, y ese anhelo saciado, a los pocos dĂ­as se vuelve a sentir y vuelven a la milonga para reencontrarse con ese abrazo y ese momento‌ tan anhelado.
