Your summer is about to get a whole lot cooler! This summer, join us at the new Great Outdoors Waterpark, featuring an exposed timber-frame architectural style, and bringing a mountain resort feel to Lafayette. The most notable and visible amenity is the 21 foot high, doubletrouble flagship slide! These two colorful slide tubes weave together to take aquatic explorers on a high-speed, exhilarating trip into splashy run outs. The two-story Grand Eagle Dump Bucket playfully spills water on visitors every few minutes, and perches high atop the fully accessible, zero-depth-entry leisure pool. This interactive play area features frisky trout, a colorful flower water garden, and an exciting padded log slide. All ages will enjoy taking a relaxing float around the lazy river where voyagers can leisurely ride on tubes and soak up majestic mountain views. Here visitors can also attempt to swing across the Aqua Arch, a first of its kind cargo net destined to challenge the climber in you. The 4,000 square foot bathhouse includes changing areas, inclusive changing rooms, and free lockers. Your crew can cool down and fuel up with a tasty treat from the concession stand and enjoy seating and picnic tables outfitted with shady umbrellas. A secured spot can be reserved by renting a cabana for the day or half-day. Check out page 6 for more information. The original 3,400 square foot pool continues to be an amenity at the waterpark offering dedicated lap lanes, diving boards, aqua basketball, and a large open pool area for unstructured play. Cool off in the region’s coolest new destination waterpark – conveniently located right in your backyard! Join us on May 11 for a ribbon cutting ceremony or on May 28 for the Grand Opening. Find details, admission information, and hours of operations on page 6 or at www.theGOWP.com.

water walking Water Walking introduces new exercise variables such as buoyancy, water resistance, and heat exchange between your body and water that may add to the benefits you get out of exercising in water. • Buoyancy in water - this is the floating part about being in water and helpful in building better balance. • Water pressure and resistance - just being in water can improve circulation and burn fat. • Temperature of water - due to difference in your temperature and that of water you burn more calories. This class is available at your own pace without an instructor. Come 4 days a week or water walk as a cool down to Bootcamp or other classes. Special discounts available to participants registered for bootcamp or water fitness only*. Location: Great Outdoors Waterpark, 500 S. Boulder Rd. code

Lafayette Recreation offers full day camps when BVSD is out of session from 7:30am–6pm. There are opportunities to register for extra add on programming. All add on programs will be marked with the BASE logo throughout the brochure.

YOUTH

LAFAYETTE EXPLORERS For young children, meaningful and long lasting learning requires active thinking and experimenting to find out how things work. This is best accomplished through purposeful play facilitated by highly intentional teaching practices. THE GOALS OF OUR CURRICULUM The most important goal of our early childhood curriculum is to help children become enthusiastic learners and form friendships. This means encouraging children to be active and creative explorers who are not afraid to try out their ideas and to think their own thoughts. We strive to help children become independent, self-confident, inquisitive learners. We’re teaching them how to learn, not just in preschool, but also all through their lives. The activities we plan for children, the way we organize the environment, select toys and materials, plan the daily schedule, and talk with children, are all designed to accomplish the goals of our curriculum and give the children a successful start in school. We provide opportunities for them to learn at their own pace and in the ways that are best for them.

SOCIAL: to help children feel comfortable in school, trust their new environment, make friends, and feel they are a part of the group.

Emotional: to help children experience pride and self confidence, develop independence and self-control, and form a positive attitude toward life.

Cognitive: to help children become confident learners by letting them try out their own ideas and experience success, and by helping them acquire learning skills such as the ability to solve problems, ask questions, and use words to describe their ideas, observations, and feelings.

Physical: to help children increase their large and small motor skills and feel confident about what their bodies can do.

► All participants must be potty trained by the first day of class. ► nutrition policy: We provide a valuable foundation for children to learn healthy habits. Our program encourages

nutritional snacks and incorporates activities that promote large motor movement, which are critical components in children’s development.

If you have questions about the Lafayette Explorers Preschool, please contact Sarah Cleland at 303661-1480 or by email at sarah.cleland@cityoflafayette.com. For more information, please visit our website at www.cityoflafayette.com/preschool.

water walking Water Walking introduces new exercise variables such as buoyancy, water resistance, and heat exchange between your body and water that may add to the benefits you get out of exercising in water. Boulder Rd. code

general interest classes The Industrial City Under Your Feet: Mapping Lafayette’s Long Abandoned Coal Mine Passages Coal production from Lafayette’s mines peaked about 1909. Simpson Mine, at the time the largest coal mine in Northern Colorado, produced over 200,000 tons of coal in 1906. The Simpson’s underground passageways also connected to the Cannon, Strathmore, Mitchell, Excelsior and Gladstone mines and allowed miners to travel underground from one end of town to the other. Larger passageways, called haulage ways, had their own names — Wabash, Timberline and Broadway. Discover the history of the long gone tunnels under your feet, and the formerly thriving industrial city of sorts under Old Town Lafayette.

Age Well Lafayette - Community Conversation Date: Tuesday, June 5 5-7PM Location: Lafayette Senior Center, 103 S. Iowa Ave. In 2014, the strategic plan for aging well in Boulder County was published. Age Well Boulder County was the result of information and feedback gathered from hundreds of people in Lafayette and across the county. It is time to refresh the plan, gather input for our four year plan, and focus on action steps that individuals and communities can take to ensure that we age well into the future of our aging community. Do you care what our community has to offer as you age? We invite you to participate in an interactive Community Conversation for you to share your vision of the future and offer your opinions, concerns, and suggestions. Please join us! Contact Lafayette Senior Services for more information: 303-661-1492. COMMUNITY SUMMER PROJECT: This is Aging in Lafayette – Breaking Down the Stigma of Aging Older Adults are an active, vibrant part of life in Lafayette. From hikers and skiers to artists and entrepreneurs, older adults make up many pieces of the puzzle that makes Lafayette a wonderful place to live, work and play. Help us demonstrate this by designing a puzzle piece that shows what “Aging in Lafayette” means to you. Blank puzzle pieces will be available to pick up at City Hall, Bob L. Burger Recreation Center, Lafayette Senior Center and other city locations and events between June 8 and August 10. Submissions should be returned to the Lafayette Senior Center or Bob L. Burger Recreation Center no later than Friday, August 31. The assembled puzzle titled “This is Aging in Lafayette” will be on display at the final Art Night Out on Friday, September 14 and afterwards at the Lafayette Senior Center at 103 S. Iowa Ave. and other City buildings. All art mediums are allowed, but must fit on the provided puzzle pieces. Submissions from artists of any age are accepted and should feature what “Aging in Lafayette” means to the artist. Kids can design one for their grandparents, older adults can create something that is personal to them. Use your creativity!
