The Activate Lafayette mobile phone app allows users to experience Lafayette’s art, history, and outdoor spaces while engaging with interesting and informative content. One of the many interactive tours available through the app is the 2018 Art on the Street Tour which allows users to take an in-depth look at the City’s public art collection, learn about the artists, check in at each site, and share content with friends. In order to “unlock” the full capability of the app, users need to be present at the specific point of interest. Couch surfers don’t have access to all the available information! Message from the Mayor u A History
Lesson on Imbibing in Lafayette Former town historian Bill Hutchison said the founder of Lafayette, Mary Miller, “was famous for her dislike of liquor”. The deeds of every property she owned included a clause that outlawed the sale or consumption of alcohol. George Miller, the first mayor of Lafayette and son of Mary and Lafayette Miller, contested his mother’s tradition. In 1893, George platted the Lafayette West Subdivision, located on the west side of Public Road between Geneseo and Cleveland, intentionally omitting the provision to prohibit the sale or consumption of alcohol.
Soon after, saloons and taverns began sprouting up on the west side of town. One of the first establishments was the Elkhorn Saloon at 101 S. Public Road, the site of present-day Anspach’s Jewelry. What would Mary Miller think of having Odd13 Brewing Company on the east side of town? Mr. Hutchinson surmised in a Daily Camera article that, “She’d definitely be out there with her ax.” Fast forward to 2018 – we are now the home to six breweries, a distillery, and a cidery. We have a whiskey and bacon restaurant, and coffee shops offering music and drinks. Lafayette’s social establishments likely conduct themselves very differently than the saloons of Mary Miller’s day. Our refined gathering places foster a sense of community and provide a social outlet for friends and neighbors – some even offer a welcoming spot for families. If you haven’t yet visited these fine establishments, make a point to support our local businesses. And perhaps raise a toast to George Miller for having the foresight to break tradition. Encourage Additional Community Engagement During Planning Processes
Modifications to Lafayette’s Development Review Process have been implemented in order to expand public engagement opportunities and allow more time for consideration. These changes came about in an effort to create more thorough procedures and will extend the review process for new developments by approximately five to six months.
In addition to this new review process, Planning Commission has recently expanded their public comment policy to include the “pooling” of time during public hearings and items from the public not on the agenda. Two to four speakers may choose to pool their allocated comment time by designating one speaker. This, too, will result in a more beneficial and engaging process for both citizens and the commission. Community Pavilion Available at Waneka Lake
A new community picnic pavilion was installed in May at Waneka Lake Park and is available without a rental fee on a firstcome, first-served basis. Electricity, a bbq pit, and benches are amenities users can enjoy when gathering with friends and family at the park. The pavilion was paid for as part of a Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) grant. Road Strategic Corridor Plan

Conservation Ordinance & Property Maintenance Reminders
After 6 months of public processes, the Public Road Strategic Corridor Plan will be presented to City Council on August 21 for approval. Lafayette residents and business owners applied to participate on the Friends of Public Road Working Group and provided guidance on the development of a corridor plan intended to 1) address aging infrastructure/traffic signals 2) Facilitate safe travel for all modes of transportation and 3) Accommodate the existing land uses while keeping in mind the anticipated land use changes.
• Grass and weeds on a residential property – including the area between the sidewalk and street – are required to be cut and maintained not to exceed 12 inches in height. • Tree limbs, branches, and shrubs should be trimmed so to not impede sidewalks or any traffic signs. • The City’s permanent, year-round water conservation ordinance includes: – No watering of outdoor landscaping between the hours of 10am and 6pm except: 1) Watering by hand with a hose equipped with an automatic shut-off valve 2) City-owned golf course, athletic fields, and commercial agriculture – Excessive overrun of water onto any area not covered by vegetation such as sidewalks, curbs, driveways, streets and other paved areas is prohibited. – Washing down paved areas, such as driveways, with a hose is not allowed. Farmers Market Moves to
The City’s exciting collaboration with Boulder County Farmers Markets (BCFM) is back again in 2018 offering a weekly, producer-only farmers market every Thursday from 4-8:00pm through September. This year’s new location, along the historic 400 block of East Simpson Avenue, celebrates the roots of Lafayette’s agricultural past and provides an expanded, communitycentric location. You can purchase locally grown produce and packaged products while joining your friends and neighbors to enjoy live music, a beer garden, chef demonstrations, kids’ activities, and more! Puzzle Project – Breaking Down the Stigma of Aging
Older adults are an active, vibrant part of life in our community. Help the Lafayette Senior Services demonstrate this by designing a puzzle piece that shows what “Aging in Lafayette” means to you.
