Preserve this Piece of Historic Public Art!

A recently uncovered Coca-Cola® mural represents one colorful stage in the century-long life of the historic structure once located at 201 N. Public Road. Originally constructed during the first decade of the 1900s, the building had served as a pharmacy and multiple bars and restaurants over the years. As the building was being torn down in June of 2015, crews discovered this exhilarating mural along the south wall.

Thanks to help from Boy Scout Troops 271 and 766, and many local volunteers, the wildlife habitat at Waneka Lake was significantly improved this winter during the outlet valve replacement project. Activities included spawning beds, floating wildlife perches, artificial reef construction, and the clearing of debris from the lake bed.

Mayor’s Corner In my role as mayor I have the opportunity to hear from citizens in the grocery store, library, on our public trails, or at one of our council events. Listening and learning from others about what makes Lafayette such a special place to live is inspiring. It always comes back to people’s sense of community. People talk Mayor Christine Berg, husband Zak, daughter Sunny about their being part of something larger, shared values and a desire to connect with their neighbors. How do you define community? During our city council strategic planning session in January, we discussed our vision for the community of Lafayette. We talked about placemaking which “capitalizes on a local community’s assets, inspiration, and potential, with the intention of creating public spaces that promote people’s health, happiness, and well being.” It also incorporates the planning, management and design of public spaces to meet these goals.

Bike Rodeo / Walk and Wheel Launch Event

u

On Saturday, June 11 children and parents alike will have an opportunity to learn about bicycle safety and the City’s new active transportation project – Lafayette Walk and Wheel. Kids under 12 can have helmets and bikes inspected, and take a spin through the obstacle course where they will learn safety skills from the Police Department. From 9am to 12pm participants can enjoy free food, exciting prize drawings, and lots of fun activities. Visit cityoflafayette. com/WalkAndWheel for location, additional event details, and information about the City’s Walk and Wheel bicycle and pedestrian program.

As we engage our neighbors, friends and family on a daily basis on what’s important to them, we define our sense of place. In an attempt to celebrate and identify these values, city council embarked on a mission to create a statement of values for our community. This is what we came up with in discussing why we love our town, and what we can do to make it even better for all of our citizens. Many thanks to staff who expertly assembled our thoughts into sentences: “We foresee a strong economy that is diverse and sustainable, attracts innovators, encourages a balance of big and small businesses, and meets the community’s needs. We intend to shape the future through strengthening our voice on environmental stewardship and social issues, taking an active role in sustainability and strategic planning development, and facilitating leadership development and fresh thinking. We strive to be a connected community that encourages cooperative relationships and inclusivity, expects accessibility and communication, nurtures resiliency, appreciates multi-culturalism, and humanizes physical and social interactions within the City. We support placemaking endeavors that stimulate historic preservation and the arts, encourage open space stewardship and networking of neighborhoods, and promote comprehensive planning and livability.” How do you define community? Let us know!

Because Colorado is one of the driest states in the U.S., the City’s stewardship as it relates to our water rights, storage, delivery, and treatment activities are of utmost importance to residents. Projects planned and currently in place have made it necessary to raise residential water rates 5% annually over the next six years. This additional funding will be invested to protect our water resources now and into the future. More information and a rate comparison chart can be found at cityoflafayette.com/WaterRates.
