On Tuesday at the University of Pretoria faculty of veterinary science, surgeons inserted two titanium plates into the leg of a Cheetah that was rescued from horri c conditions. The operation was successful and the animal is recovering well at a private nature reserve. Bulletin will have the full story in next week’s edition.

Woman endures horrors of state health

It’s the old tale of the government’s failure to provide even the most basic of health care to its citizens, and this last few months it very nearly ended in disaster for one local woman.

Adelle Dey was diagnosed with breast cancer in July 2022 after a visit to a local doctor led to the discovery of an abscess in her left breast.

After a scan was done, a mass was detected in her right breast as well and she was referred to Letaba hospital for a biopsy. She was told that the waiting period for this would be three months. “It was terribly frightening and I just couldn’t wait that long for my results, so we went back to Tzaneen and scheduled a biopsy at the local lab. After the biopsy we did a mammogram as well, because the mammogram machine was out of order at Mankweng hospital.”

Incidentally, Mankweng hospital is the only state-owned healthcare facility that has a breast cancer centre in the province which is why patients are referred there.

Adelle had to return to Letaba hospital where she handed in the samples from her biopsy to be sent away to the state laboratory. It was a six week wait. Upon receipt of her results she was referred back to Letaba hospital to arrange an appointment at Mankweng hospital. After a four hour wait at Letaba, the doctor finally saw her and an appointment was scheduled at Mankweng.

On the 29th of September she arrived back at Mankweng expecting to be operated on the following day. This would not be the case as she was then told that she needed to go to Polokwane for nuclear x-rays done at Polokwane rst. She was also not allowed to go home for the weekend and had to remain in Mankweng hospital until the following week. No explanation was given.

“On Sunday a water pipe burst and there was no water in the hospital until Wednesday. The bathrooms were absolutely disgusting and there were no cleaning crews. The nurses do the cleaning, serve the food and see to patients!” she said.

That Monday Adelle, accompanied by another patient whom she befriended whilst in the ward over the weekend, travelled back to Polokwane.

“We sat the whole day waiting for just one scan. The lady with me was experiencing leakage from her breast. We went back to Mankweng after the Polokwane ordeal and I expected to be done that following day (Tuesday) so I was told that I was not allowed to eat or drink before surgery. Come Tuesday morning, I wait and wait and wait only to be told that I was not going to get surgery that day as the theatre was closed and so they would do me the next day. I still couldn’t eat anything before the surgery.”

Thankfully it was stage 1 Cancer, so my breast did not have to be removed. The other lady however, was not told what they were going to do, she woke up from surgery and noticed her breast was gone!”

A week later she went back for a check-up as she was instructed. Arriving at Mankweng she met with a di erent doctor.

“This guy was arrogant and extremely unprofessional. He was laid back in his o ce chair behind the computer and shoo’d me away without even an inspection and said I must come back in January for radiation. I thought, what the heck, why radiation? But was not given the time of day and so I raised my concerns with the head of surgery at Letaba hospital, Dr David Ntsoane. What a wonderfully caring man!” Dr Ntsoane made a few phone calls and Adelle received a message a week later instructing her to be back in Polokwane for radiation with immediate e ect.

“The lady said I must go through to Polokwane, they can print my results there.”

Arriving back at Polokwane, Adelle went straight to the Radiation Department as instructed.

“The nurse there told me I should go to the Chemo unit rst to get a doctor to refer me to the radiation department. I get to the chemo unit, and they ask me why I’m there, I should go straight to Radiation. Get to Radiation and I’m sent back to Chemo. This carried on for nearly an hour. Finally a doctor sees me and prescribes me hormone medication which I am told to drink for the next five years. No explanation given.”

She nally gets back to Radiation and there she waited to be helped. Eventually she is given an appointment card and told to return on the 23rd of February because the hospital’s machine was out of order and had not been working for three months.

Adelle will keep us updated on the 23rd of February and we will run a follow up on this disastrous tale. We will issue a media inquiry to gain some form of comment on this situation from the Limpopo Health department.

PNHF remove more illegal field snares

During January, the Phalaborwa Natural Heritage Foundation (PNHF) teamed up on a mission with members of the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) and the South African Hunters Conservation’s (SAHGA) Mopani branch, to rid the local wildlife of the dangers of snares.

The team, amidst sweltering heat and lots of thornbushes, conducted a total of nine snare sweeps and removed a staggering total of 312 snares. They managed to rescue one impala from a snare. This was just for January.

Sadly, the team discovered 16 bu alo, three elephants, one hippo, one gira e, seven zebras, four impalas, one warthog and one spotted hyena which did not survive the deadly snares. The members of PNHF would like to pay their gratitude to each and every volunteer for their dedication in this mammoth task. This association is a Non-profit environmental conservation organization.

Wisani Burial Society was established in 1995, operating from a small o ce in Trichardtsdal.

As our client base grew, we saw the need to expand further into Limpopo, starting with Tzaneen and then moving to Soekmekaar and Giyani and finally, in 2006, to Phalaborwa. The building was small and intimate, exactly what we needed at the time. We worked on building a strong relationship with the community over the years following the establishment of our brand in Phalaborwa.

This lead to a continuous growth and after 17 years of loyal support from the Phalaborwa community, it was time to give back by building a brand new, modern o ce building with a mortuary, where our families can experience a digni ed, top-quality service. This new building o ers a spacious open plan reception area, two private arrangement o ces, two view rooms with a comfortable waiting area, a large showroom featuring the Halston Range, only available at Wisani and NLA, among other beautiful caskets and tombstones, and nally, our state of the art mortuary.

We celebrated the establishment of our new building with a very successful opening ceremony, held in Phalaborwa on Sunday, 5 February. We were graced by the presence of Makhushane Tribal Council, Mashishimale Tribal Council, Maseke Tribal Council, Majeje Benfarm Tribal Council, Selwane Tribal Council, Phalaborwa SAPS, Lulekani SAPS, Namakgale SAPS, Provincial Tra c O cials and the Ba-Phalaborwa Mayor, Cllr Meriam Malatji, along with her delegates.

The day was led by Mr Sam Modiba, with whom Wisani has had a long standing relationship, and broadcasted live by the wonderful team from Phalaborwa FM.

Entertainment was provided throughout the day

by our famous band, as well as a few traditional dance groups: Xigubu xa Chajara Traditional Dancers, Makatekele Traditional Segubhu, Ncino wa Xigaza Traditional dancers. The ribbon cutting ceremony was held at the office, lead by our own Mr Michael Moagi, with Cllr Meriam Malatji by his side, followed by a tour of our new building, where after the guests returned to the main event. As a nal gift to our guests, we had a lucky draw where we gave away three tombstones and the lucky winners were Ms Victoria Ngobeni, Ms Moketi Meriam Malatji, Mr PT Mangena, a hearty congratulations to them!

The day ended on a high with a delicious lunch provided by Ms Beatrice Malatji from Ma Bee Decor & Catering, who was also responsible for the beautiful setup in our VIP tent.

Wisani and NLA would like to thank all our invited guests for attending this special day as well as the service providers who made this day possible. Thank you to the wonderful dancers who kept like to thank possible,

delicious everyone entertained. We would also our loyal members, without whom our service in Phalaborwa will not be and nally, our treasured employees for their hard work and dedication.

Volgens Ula Schoeman, bemarkingsbestuurder en woordvoerder vir Larries, sou die A-span se atlete by Laerskool Drakensig deelgeneem het, maar gure weer het egter ‘n stokkie daarvoor gesteek.

Die Larrie-atleet, Pomolo Thipe, was na a oop van die byeenkoms as die wenner van die Junior Victrix Ludorum aangewys. Die B-span het hul baie goed van hul taak gekwyt deur sewe eersteplekke, 10 tweedeplekke, 24 derdeplekke en nege vierdeplekke behaal.

Pupils from Stanford Lake College travelled to Polokwane on Friday the 27th of February to defend their title as the Independent Schools’ Athletics Champs. Which they dually did. “It had been some time since the whole school went together to this event and the spirit and support from the stands, led by the Spirit Committee, was incredible”, said Beth Coetzee, marketing manager at Stanford Lake College.

The Stanford athletes had to work exceptionally hard against some good competition from PEPPS and Curro Heuwelkruin in particular.

Zayd Moosa broke the U/17 boys shotput record, and Isabella Brett set a new discus record for girls U/15.

Nanaki Kgopong put together an amazing

performance on the day, scoring more points than any other athlete, which earned her the accolade of the Senior Victrix Ludorum. Despite these great individual performances, it was a real team e ort, especially in the relays where Stanford scored 86 points ahead of Curro’s 80 points. Dié span wat altesaam uit 23 boogskuts bestaan het, het aan die eerste been van die African Bow Hunting (ABO) se trippelkroontoernooi deelgeneem wat by die Wildcrete Boogskietbaan beslis is.

Rouxné Schnettler en Henk Meyer het beide met hulle algehele eersteplekke hul teenstanders met hul skietvernuf op hul neuse laat kyk.

Merensky Landbou Akademie met ‘n span van 13 swemmers het Saterdag en Sondag die 4de en 5de Februarie van Limpopo se voorste swemmers aangedurf en met ‘n vrag medaljes teruggekeer.

Die O/14-seuns het hulself onderskei van hul teenstanders met hul uitstekende vertoning in die 100m vlinderslag item deur al drie die podiumplekke in te neem. Christiaan Janse van Vuuren het eerste die wal geraak gevolg deur Ruan Leykauf in die tweedeplek en MJ Pohl in die derdeplek.

Leykauf het verder die 100m vryslag, 200m vryslag asook die 50m vryslag items gewen en tweedeplekke in die 50m vlinderslag en

100m vlinderslag behaal. Hy het in die 200m individuele wisselslag in die derdeplek geëindig.

Janse van Vuuren het afgesien van sy oorwinning in die 100m vlinderslag item ‘n hele rits podiumplekke vermag. Hy het ‘n aantal tweedeplekke in die 100m en 50m vryslag bewerkstellig en in die 100m vryslag en 200m rugslag items het hy beide in die derdeplek geëindig.

MJ Pohl het ‘n reeks van bronsmedaljes geneem vir die 50m borsslag, 100m borsslag, 100m vlinderslag en 200m borsslag items waaraan hy deelgeneem het.

In die afdeling vir meisies O/14 het Carmé Louw in die 100m borsslag geseëvier en dit opgevolg met tweedeplekke in die 50m borsslag en 200m borsslag items. Liné Brits het in die 50m rugslag ‘n derdeplek behaal.

In die ouderdomsgroep vir O/15 meisies het Simoné Schonken in

die 200m borsslag met die silwermedalje weggestap en ‘n bronsmedalje vir haar derdeplek in die 100m borsslag item ontvang. Aeden Anderson wie in die afdeling vir O/15 seuns geswem het, het die tweedeplek in die 100m borsslag geneem.

Mignon Smit, in die O/16 meisies ouderdomsgroep, het vir nog ‘n gouemedalje gesorg met haar oorwinning in die 100m borsslag. In die korter 50m weergawe van hierdie item moes sy egter met die tweedeplek tevrede wees.

Larike Joubert het met haar tweedeplek in die 200m borsslag item vir meisies O/17 die silwermedalje geneem. Sy het verder twee brons medaljes ontvang vir haar derdeplekke in die 100m en 50m vlinderslag items.

Donia Smit het met die gouemedalje in die 400m vryslag item gepronk en in die 200m rugslag item moes sy egter met die tweedeplek tevrede wees.

Roux het beide tweedeplekke vermag. Hul spanmaats, Jonah Altenroxel en Dian Schnettler, was met derdeplekke beloon. Die boogskutspan van Merensky Landbou Akademie het sodoende in die algehele derdeplek na a oop van hierdie trippelkroontoernooi geëindig.

Buffels span saam vir Limpopo swemkroon

Die swemspan van die Hoërskool Ben Vorster met altesaam nege lede in die span, het Saterdag en Sondag die 4de en 5de Februarie swemmers van regoor Limpopo die stryd aangesê.

Dit was tydens die Limpopo Skole Swemkampioenskap, vir hoër- en laerskole, en dit is by die Tzaneen munisipale swembad aangebied.

Dit was veral Jason Loucao wie in die afdeling vir seuns O/17 sy stempel afgedruk het en met ‘n rits eersteplekke sowel as tweede- en derdeplekke gespog het. Inteendeel, Loucao het ‘n medalje opgeraap in elk van die items waaraan hy deelgeneem het.

Dié kraninge swemmer het eersteplekke in die

100m rugslag, 50m borsslag, 100m borsslag, 50m rugslag, 200m borsslag en 200m rugslag verower.

Hy het verder tweedeplekke in die 200m vryslag en 200m individuele wisselslag behaal wat aan hom twee verdere medaljes besorg het.

Hy het ook die Senior Victor Ludorum toekenning ontvang vir sy prestasies, maar hy het egter die beker met sy teenstander, Junior Pheea van Polokwane English Preparatory School and College (PEPPS), gedeel.

Tesame met Loucao se medaljeversameling het die Vossies se swemmers altesaam sewe goue-, 14 silwer- en 15 bronsmedaljes ingepalm. Chelsea Snyman het in die ouderdomsgroep vir meisies O/15 geswem waar sy in die 200m borsslag item in die derdeplek geëindig het.

Elné Haynes het ‘n aantal medaljes in die afdeling vir meisies O/16 verower, maar die goue edelmetale het haar telkens ontwyk. Sy het nietemin steeds ‘n medalje vermag in elk van die items waaraan sy deelgeneem het.

Haynes het tweedeplekke in die 100m rugslag, 50m rugslag, 100m vlinderslag, 50m vlinderslag en 200m rugslag behaal. Sy het verder bronsmedaljes in die 100m vryslag, 200m vryslag en 50m vryslag items verower.

Yvonne Botha wie in die ouderdomsgroep vir meisies O/18 meegeding het, het in die 200m borsslag item haar teenstanders getroef om met die gouemedalje weg te stap. Sy het silwermedaljes vir haar deelnames in die in 100m rugslag en 100m borsslag ontvang. En ook ‘n aantal bronsmedaljes vir haar derdeplekke in die

50m borsslag, 100m vryslag, 50m rugslag en 50m vryslag items.

Wessel Joubert het in die afdeling vir seuns O/15 geswem waar hy twee silvermedaljes vir die 50m borsslag en 100m vlinderslag ingepalm het en het verder twee bronsmedaljes vir sy derdeplekke in die 50m vryslag en 50m vlinderslag items ontvang.

Joszua Joubert het in die afdeling vir seuns O/17 geswem en hy was ook een van die Vossie swemmers wie ‘n medalje in elkeen van sy items verower het.

Joubert het die tweede trappie op die podium beklee vir sy tweedeplekke in die 100m rugslag, 50m borsslag en 50m rugslag items. Hy het verder brons medaljes vir sy deelnames in die 100m vryslag, 100m borsslag, 50m vryslag, 200m-borsslag en 50m vlinderslag items ontvang.

Loucao and Zhang share top awards

Tzaneen hosted the Limpopo Schools Swimming Championship this past Saturday and Sunday the 4th and 5th of February. This event which hosted both primary and high school swimmers, set the tone for the rest of the season, which is expected to produce some close races between some of the province’s best senior swimmers.

A fierce battle raged between Jason Loucao of Ben Vorster High, and Junior Pheea from Polokwane English Preparatory School and College (PEPPS) as both had their eyes set on the Victor Ludorum. After the points were tallied however, Loucao and Pheea landed tied on 158 points each, which saw them share the coveted cup.

Loucao who competed in the U/17 age group, was victorious in the 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke and in the 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke items. His medal run did not stop there as he basically earned a medal for every item he entered for. He added silver medals to his gold collection for his second places in the 200m-freestyle and 200m individual medley.

The contest between the senior girls’ swimmers was just as fierce with Stanford Lake College’s Jenny Zhang facing o against her rival from Pietersburg High (PHS), Chignet Davel. Both swimmers accumulated the exact same amount of points, also 158 each, to share the Senior Victrix.

Zhang who competed in the 17 to 18 years age group, took gold in the 50m, 100m and 200m back and further claimed gold for the 100m and 200m free as well as for the 100m butter y. She settled for second place in the 50m breaststroke and a host of third places for her other events.

Juan Randell from PHS was the swimmer to beat in the boys junior division and his 165 points in this championship earned him the Junior Victor trophy. The Junior Victrix found its home at Hoërskool Piet Potgieter in Mokopane,

courtesy of Carmi Schoeman who amassed 166 points to claim this title.

Joshua Bekker from Tzaneen Primary set the tone amongst the primary schools entries and was duly awarded with the Starfish Victor Ludorum for his excellent score of 158 points.

The Starfish Victrix Ludorum was awarded to Ineke van Maarleveld from Laerskool Pietersburg-Oos (Oosskool) with a tally of 156 points. The award for the Best Male Swimmer (Hy Tek) with a total of 766 went to another Oosskool swimmer, Reghard de Beer.

The performances of Mari Zanne Nortje from Ben Viljoen High from Groblersdal earned her the title of the Best Female Swimmer (Hy Tek), with a score of 583 points. Nathan Struwig, a disabled swimmer from Ben Viljoen, was rewarded for his determination and courage to compete and he received the award for the Best Disabled Swimmer.
