A road renowned for its treacherous potholes and dastardly state for many years, was transformed into one of the smoothest in the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality thanks to a local mine’s social responsibility. “It was long overdue, but we welcomed it,” said Musa Mapoxe, a frequent commuter on the infamous 3km Selwane Road that Palabora Mining Company (PMC) handed over to the Department of Roads and Transport, Ba-Phalaborwa municipal mayor, and Selwane Traditional Authority. “The Roads Agency Limpopo (RAL) and Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality were at loggerheads seeking a resolution to meet the fair expectations of the Selwana Traditional Authorities and its disgruntled community, resilient in their protest, demanding for change in their quality of life,” said the PMC spokesperson, Abby Ledwaba. He said that PMC conceded to partner with the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality and RAL after they were convinced of the return on investment in constructing a road in Selwana could have. According to Ledwaba, the project partnership was beyond just ticking a compliance checklist to

secure the mining license for PMC. “It was equally motivated by the desire to unleash the projected potential that could transform the lives of the people in Selwana for the better.” According to him, once the partnership commenced, some benefits started flowing in immediately such as PMC being on track with their compliance to retain mining rights, municipality being on par with service delivery, and the Tribal authority prioritizing the interest of the people. The project is reported to have created job opportunities where employees were sourced locally ranging from elementary, skilled, and subcontracting levels and this propelled financial

An elderly blind woman in Mashishimale who stays in a dilapidated house with four of her grandchildren cried tears of joy, when Mopani TVET College officially held a sod-turning ceremony at her house on Monday, the 11th of July. The college principal, Dr Levy Baloyi, officiated the ceremony to mark the start of the construction of the house as part of its Mandela Day initiative. According to Given Sebashe, the spokesperson of the college, the campaign sought to support the objectives of Mandela Day which encouraged institutions and individuals to inspire change. It was through the assistance of the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality that the college selected the family of Letty Malatji, the destitute 86-year-old woman who stays in her run-down house with her grandchildren. The ward councillor, Sinah Shayi, commended the college for lending a helping hand to the family as “This family has on several occasions applied for an RDP house with no success. We are grateful as the municipality that the college came through to assist and we remain humbled by such an act of Ubuntu”. “The college saw it fit to assist the family as it has been identified as one of the most impoverished families in the area with no proper shelter, living only on social grants and whose safety and rights to dignity are compromised,” Sebashe told Bulletin. Dr Baloyi said that the project would be done through public-private partnerships and would be constructed by the college’s apprentices under supervision of their facilitators.

empowerment, boosting local economic activity within Selwana. Appreciative of how the road has enabled the potential to trade, allowed easy access into Selwana and nearby communities, and reduced travel time to the markets as well as wear and tear on vehicles, PMC decided to fund a further 3km.

Teacher sentenced ■ Jeff Jackson

A Phalaborwa detective was hailed as a hero after securing the conviction and sentencing of a primary school teacher who raped two minors in 2018 and 2019. Det Sgt Phionah Ndlovu of the Phalaborwa Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) was praised when a 54-year-old teacher was sentenced to two life sentences after being convicted of raping a 14 and 15-year-old pupil respectively. Hendrick Lepedi, a former schoolteacher, was sentenced by the Lulekani Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 11th of July, after being arrested on the 23rd of September 2019, following rape incidents, where he was convicted of having abused the very children he had to teach. Further reports suggest, that Lepedi showed his victims, school learners, pornographic videos before forcing himself onto them. The incidents were reported to the school principal, who notified the Police, and the Department of Social Development and cases of rape were opened and investigations activated. These cases were investigated by Ndlovu, who traced and arrested the accused for two counts of rape and also charged him with defeating the administration of justice after he had attempted to bribe the victims’ parents. His accomplice in the bribery, a 38-year-old woman, Adel Wisani Nkuna, was also arrested for assisting the accused during the bribe incident. Lepedi was found guilty of all the charges levelled against him and sentenced to two life sentences for the two counts of rape, and an additional five years without the option of a fine for defeating the administration of justice. His sentence will run concurrently, and he was further declared unfit to possess a firearm. Meanwhile, his accomplice, Adel Wisani Nkuna (38), was sentenced to three years imprisonment with an option of a fine of R6 000 for defeating the administration of justice and also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

Poachers arrested ■ Jeff Jackson The partnership policing and alert actions of the Endangered Species Unit, with assistance from Farm Watch members, led to the arrest of a suspected rhino poacher in the Gravellotte area on Friday, the 8th of July. This was after the units acted on a tip-off and investigations conducted on a local farm found one rhino shot and dehorned and another wounded with its horns still intact. The suspect was arrested soon after a report was received about gunshots heard on the farm. Two other suspects were arrested later after the motor vehicle the were travelling in, a Toyota double cab, was spotted on the Eiland Road near Letsitele and was pulled over. During the search, police recovered a high caliber hunting rifle, ammunition, two rhino horns and other hunting gear.

Letsitele water is safe for consumption ■ Joe Dreyer Last month a proportional representative municipal councillor (PR) of the Democratic Alliance paid a visit to the clinic in Letsitele to follow up on allegations that the facility’s water supply was severely contaminated and unfit for human consumption. The DA’s PR Councillor for Ward 23, Chrisma Bredenkamp, was accompanied by the party’s shadow deputy minister of Health, Lindy Wilson, and the DA’s Political Leader for the Mopani District, Solly Malatsi. Following their oversight visit on the 28th of April, which was reportedly preceded by three previous visits by Bredenkamp, it was discovered that the water supply at the clinic was indeed infected with dangerously high levels of e-coli which rendered it unfit for human consumption. Bredenkamp claimed that the stench of the water during her first visit to the clinic bothered her, which is why she returned a second, and then a third time and requested the water be tested by an “independent laboratory”. Whilst the Greater Tzaneen Municipality (GTM) does have a supply point at the clinic, with fresh water through their own pipeline, the faucets are locked at the site and the clinic therefore uses a borehole and JoJo tanks for their water. The reason for this is because, according to Bredenkamp, the Limpopo Department of Health and the GTM were at loggerheads over the supply of water to the clinic. It is alleged that the Department of Health refused to pay the GTM’s connection and monthly fee for the use of the municipal pipeline. Bredenkamp went on to claim that the entire water supply network in Letsitele was not safe for human consumption after a resident near the clinic provided her with photos of a filter from his water filtration

system at his home. In these photographs, the resident showed that a over time.” The GTM also dismissed the claims made by Bredenkamp and in remustard-coloured sludge formed on the outside of the filter. Jetty 3 tender open Tourist hears gunshots ■ Joe Dreyer The very popular Jetty 3 facility at the Tzaneen dam has become a very sore point for residents and fishermen alike since its closure to the public in 2019 at the start of the Covid lockdown. The facility was used as a GTM temporary shelter for the destitute during the harsh lockdown and has since then never again been fully opened for use to the public. The reasoning by the GTM varied greatly during this time and ranged from excuses that the municipality did not have enough manpower to adequately control entry and safety in accordance with the Covid regulations, to the instituting of a permit system to allow entry. A group of local businessmen compiled a presentation and business plan which they presented to the GTM as a proposal to take over the management of the facility at no cost to the municipality, but their proposal was shunned. This even

though one of the businessmen, Muis Joubert, was extensively involved in the management of Jetty 3 for many years in his capacity as a member of the Lions Club. Joubert still holds the liquor license for the facility. This week, the GTM published a tender on their website for the management of the facility which is presented as a 60 month contract. Those interested in this tender, which is a 60 month contract, need to submit their proposals to the civic centre before the 29th of July 2022 for attention W Mabunda. Mabunda can be contacted on 015 307 8350.

■ Billy Sibuyi According to the South African National Parks (SANParks), on the morning of the 1st of July a tourist reported to the Malelane section Ranger that they had heard two gunshots whilst on the road between Malelane and Skukuza. In response, a helicopter, K9 unit, and rangers were immediately dispatched to investigate the report. The helicopter flew over the area and located a fresh rhino carcass and an injured rhino lying next to the carcass. Further investigations revealed two more rhino carcasses in the area. A second helicopter and rangers were dispatched to collect the free-running hounds, while the first helicopter deployed rangers and a K9 unit to locate the tracks exiting the scene. According to the park the rangers and K9 unit continued to follow the outgoing tracks for a few kilometres, after which the free-running hounds were released to continue with the follow up and they indicated a specific area where three suspects were found and arrest-

ed. The suspects, all Mozambicans, were reportedly in the country illegally and were found in possession of a high caliber hunting rifle, ammunition, horns from three rhinos, cell phones, and other poaching gear. The KNP Managing Executive, Gareth Coleman, congratulated all the anti-poaching teams on the success thanking the actions of the tourist which led to the arrests as them “being our ears and eyes is very important in this difficult anti-poaching campaign”. “The KNP is vast and Rangers cannot be everywhere therefore it is crucial for anyone who notices anything suspicious, to report it immediately to assist the Rangers in reacting swiftly. It is critical that such activities are reported directly to SANParks Ranger Services or management rather than reporting on social media.” According to SANParks the injured rhino had to be put down due to the serious bullet wounds it sustained.

The astonishing Mr Bill Tooley

Mc’Not open yet (with cheese)

■ Joe Dreyer Renowned local author, David Hilton-Barber, has published a new book “The Adventures of Bill Tooley” which is available to order at www.footprintpress.co.za and Amazon. The book details the life and times of Hilton-Barber’s father-in-law, Bill Tooley who arrived in South Africa in 1898 and served as a scout for the British forces during the Matabele Rebellion. In his notes on this particular book, the author explained that whilst he drew much of the facts from historical research into the life of the remarkable Tooley, much of the story is intertwined with fictional accounts. “Bill Tooley was my father-in-law and the account of his ancestry and historical background is indeed correct. It is also true that he was recruited into Milner’s South African Constabulary and was posted to what was then the Northern Transvaal. He bought his discharge from the police force and purchased the farms mentioned in the narrative. His success in farming, his marriage to Muriel Hesketh-Jones, and the family they raised is true to life, as is his second marriage to Elsie Dickson. Tana, the only daughter from this union, was my wife for 56 years. However, his experience as a member of the Pioneer Column to Mashonaland as a land surveyor in the Transvaal is fictional. I have drawn much of this from the writings of Ingvar Schroder-Nielsen, a Norwegian land-surveyor who worked in the Transvaal prior to the Anglo-Boer War and subsequently joined the Boers forces. The latter days of Bill Tooley’s life are also fictional but based on actuality. I have interspersed chapters from my own historical research to give context to the narrative. To help the reader distinguish between the two, the historical material is in bold type and the source

■ Joe Dreyer of this material is provided.” Hilton-Barber is a fourth generation South African. He was born in Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape and holds a BA Honours degree from Rhodes University. He then trained as a journalist, following in the footsteps of his maternal great-grandfather Frederick York St Leger, founder and first editor of the Cape Times. He has published a number books focussed on the history of especially the Tzaneen and surrounding areas. Most notable titles include Footprints: On the trial of those who shaped Tzaneen’s history, Matabele Rising, The Baronet and the Savage King and The Infamous Malaboch War.

There was some confusion created over social media this past week regarding the opening of the new McDonalds restaurant and Café situated next to the Sasol fuelling station along the R71 in Tzaneen. Bulletin spoke to the manager of the new, as yet unopened, restaurant yesterday morning and according to Malolo Maluleke, there is still no word on the exact date when the store will open its doors to the over-eager local public. “We don’t know exactly when the doors will officially be opened to the public as the store still needs to be handed over to us by our head office and this

has not yet been done,” he said. “We are very aware that the local public just cannot wait to sink their teeth into our delicious burgers, but unfortunately at this time there is no official date announced.” Bulletin has attempted to contact the group’s head office but at the time of going to print were unable to do so. We will keep our readers updated on this development over social media on our Facebook page at far North Bulletin. What are your thoughts on the McDonalds franchise and the new store set to open on our doorstep in the coming weeks? Do you know the red bakkie driver? ■ Jeff Jackson A motorist from Tzaneen was flabbergasted when two vehicles she noticed on her way home from work on Wednesday evening seemingly disappeared right before her eyes as they turned into Boundary Street. “I was driving down Voortrekker Street approaching the intersection with the R71 at around 21:45 on Wednesday evening. When I approached the intersection, the light turned green for me, but I noticed two vehicles speeding into town from Letsitele’s side and it seemed as though they would not stop, so I slammed on the brakes.” According to the motorist the two vehicles seemed to be racing one another and both skipped the red light and sped through the intersection, turning down towards Tiger Wheel. The witness stated that it was a red double cab bakkie and a grey sedan. “The two were travelling at extremely high speed

and one of them turned right into Boundary whilst the other sped ahead past Avbob and took the next right turn into Loop Street past Welmart Electrical.” She explained that she also turned right into Boundary a few seconds later, but there was no sign of either of the vehicles. They had seemingly disappeared into thin air. “There is no way that those two vehicles could have rounded the corner at Boundary Street without me seeing them after I took the turn myself. I drove up the street and they were nowhere to be found!” The driver’s experience mirror that of a similar report by another motorist at the same intersection a month earlier. In that instance, the vehicles described by the motorist were a red double cab bakkie and a Fortuner. Could it be the same vehicle spotted by these two motorists at the same intersection a month apart? Let us know in our comments section on our Facebook page at Far North Bulletin.

Gold for Limpopo boxers at Nationals ■ Roelof de Jonge

The youth and elite boxers from the Limpopo team outperformed their predecessors of the previous year when they returned home with an unanticipated medal haul. In total Limpopo brought back 11 medals, of which three were gold, two silver and six bronze medals. This was after the team’s return from the 2022 South African National Boxing Organisation’s (SANABO) Youth and Elite National Championships. This momentous event was held from the 5th until the 10th of July in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth). Under the guidance of Limpopo Boxing President and coach, Gerhard ‘Soutie’ Rossouw, who toured with the team, boxing in Limpopo has been reignited and it is just a matter of time until Limpopo once again delivers a boxing great - like former world champion Casious Baloyi. Rossouw, who is also the owner and trainer of Champs Boxing Academy in Tzaneen, said that although none of his club’s boxers competed at this year’s SA championships, because they had literally only started boxing this year, they are set to compete next year. The three boxers who won their bouts were Tshepo Machebele (57 kg, youth male division), Zandile Mothabela (63,5kg, youth male division) and Khorommby Tshikunyulu (80kg, elite male division). Limpopo actually had another boxer who won gold namely Mkatekho Sithole, but she

fought for Team RSA in the 81kg division for elite women. Mothabela also received the award for the Best Youth Male Boxer of the Tournament. In his quest to reach the final bout, Tshikunyulu came up against a former elite SA champ, Elton Gabuza, who he beat in the semi-final bout. The two silver medalists from Limpopo were both female fighters, Mienkie Ngobeni who fought in the over 81kg heavy weight division and Ella Sebola who fought in the 63kg division for youth female fighters. Bronze medals were awarded to Ponani Mathebula (54kg, youth male), Ntshorel Baloyi (67kg, youth male), Lindo Rando (57kg, youth female), Kgagiso Diale (60kg, elite female), Beverly Mmadu (60kg, elite female) and Gift Chauke (75kg, elite female). Rossouw extended his gratitude towards the management of Tzaneen Lifestyle Centre and Tzaneng Mall who supported the squad with 15 pairs of cross trainers ahead of their trip down to PE. The youth and elite boxers are now done for the season, with the Kadets (7 to 14 years) and Junior fighters (15 to 16 years) readying up for the start of their season. First up will be the Mopani District Championships which will be held in Phalaborwa next weekend, the 23rd of July at Impala Park stadium. Local boxing fans will be able to watch the bouts live over the Bulletin’s Facebook page courtesy of Far North Broadcasting Corporation. Details to be announced.

Soutkaskenades ■ Ben Theunissen Luisteraarsbetrokkenheid was vir my ‘n baie belangrike faktor in my uitsaaidae. ‘n

Lekker was toe werklik ‘n lang lag lank...

“Speel jou kolf eers in.

SOUTHERNERS TAKE HOME GOLD ■ Joe Dreyer

After a week of intense inter-provincial competition on the world-class Astro at Merensky High, the U/18B Regionals for girls in the Northern Region came to a head last week Friday. After three consecutive days between the nets, it was local goalkeeper, Lyla de Bruyn for team Limpopo who was nominated the “Most Valued Keeper” of the tournament. Despite her sterling performance which warded off some of the harshest attacks by some of the country’s top strikers, Limpopo just missed out on the medals when they took fourth place overall. It was the girls from Southern Gauteng who took the gold after a top-class display throughout the tournament. In second place was Mpumalanga B with the North Westerners taking bronze. Limpopo settled for a very narrow fourth place after they were edged out in the final battle against the fierce Northern Free State side. The Top Scorer for the tournament award was handed to the lightning quick Southerns forward, Kyra Freeman who scored six goals in six matches to end the aspirations of many an ambitious keeper. The Most Valuable Forward of the tournament award went to fellow Southerner, Erin Esterhuizen. In total, Southern Gauteng scored 24 goals in the tournament. The Most Beneficial Defender title was afforded to Northern Free State’s Juané Kotzé

for her amazing defending against South Gauteng, KZN Inland and Mpumalanga B. All of the seven teams which competed in the tournament played two matches per day over the course of the three days of play. A total of 64 goals were scored during this period of which Southern Gauteng recorded more than a third. Limpopo’s girls held their own and netted eight goals. “This tournament showcased the amazing talent on offer in our region and during this past week it was delightful to experience the comradery and good sportsmanship brought to the game by all the teams. The future of the sport of hockey looks bright and we welcome all the teams back to our turf for the next tournament,” said Anne Beech during the closing ceremony.
