People with disabilities continue to be seen as obstacles by their own communities, and as a burden to their families and friends. So said Ms Sevengwane Nkuna, the chairperson of the health and social development cluster of the Greater Tzaneen Municipality. Nkuna was addressing delegates at the Disability in Tzaneen. She said challenges facing people with disabilities persist despite government efforts. “Although government has put legislation, policy and programmes to champion the right of people living with disability, there are still obstacles.“ She added that the majority of people with disabilities could live independent and productive lives. “However, this can only happen if disabled people have access to resources, accessible environments and information. Assisting disabled people should not be seen as a privilege.

“Let it be known and understood that facilitating access to opportunities for people with disabilities and promoting their rights, is not an act of charity nor a humanitarian gesture. It is a constitutional responsibility and economic imperative,” she said. The event was attended by different disability formations. Delegates also elected the disability council to act as an umbrella body. The council will interact with government institutions to ensure that the needs of disabled people are not overlooked. Mr Jonas Mathebula was elected unopposed as the chairperson of the council. Mr Headman Mkharhi, the youth, gender and disability officer in the office of the GTM’s mayor, urged

It is alleged that Tshebo Cleaning Company manager Ms Mmathapelo Makoro hired four cleaners and told them that if they volunteer for four days, they will be hired permanently.

According to one of the volunteers, she volunteered for four days in April and thereafter she kept on working for about five weeks. The volunteer then went to Ms Makoro to inform her that she will not be able to report for duty, because she does not have money to buy a bus icket. She added that Ms Makoro also told them that after four days of volunteering some of the cleaners will be transferred to Phalaborwa Mediclinic. However, Ms Makoro told the Bulletin that the volunteers

came to her office looking for a job and she told them that the company does not have money to pay them. The volunteers then told her that they just wanted extra training. “We only allow people to volunteer for four days, and we never promised any of the volunteers that they will get a job.” Tshebo has been rendering a service to the Mediclinic Tzaneen over the past three years and their contract will be extended in July. The Mediclinic Tzaneen’s hospital manager, Mr Zane Fanie, explained that the company has been providing a great service to the hopsital. He added that Ms Makoro conveyed to the volunteers the situation about working for four days very clearly. Unfortunately it was a verbal agreement and Fanie urged Tshebo to a have written agreement to avoid such situations. Martina Jege martina@bulletin.us.com
