WALTZING WATERS: PECHERSK ALLEY OF FOUNTAINS

The last time the staircase connecting Landscape Alley with Gonchary-Kozhemyaki in Podil was reconstructed was about 50 years ago. In 2016, when a decision was made to make repairs, the wooden stairs were in a dangerous condition. They were dismantled and replaced with new wooden steps on a sturdy concrete base. The staircase is more than 200 meters long and consists of 247 steps. Under the reconstruction plan, the workers improved the adjacent landscaping, strengthened the slopes, installed CCTV cameras, equipped the Wi-Fi area, added observation platforms and LED lighting, installed new benches and bins, put in an alarm button and built a public toilet. Now, we`ve got one more cool place in Kyiv to relax and watch the world go by.

KYIV AUTHORITIES STIMULATE A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE!

www.kievcheckin.com

Besides the wonderful fountains on Maidan Nezalezhnosti and Rusanivska Quay, you can also enjoy splashes of light and music in an apartment complex that features the “Boulevard of Fountains.” This 150-meter alley of fountains, accented by light and music, is a unique custom-designed project for the housing complex. This year, the fountains were modernized with a computer program that allows the fountains to work both automatically or in an individually selected mode for each melody. For the second year in a row, the fountain ensemble is a recognized special feature of the Pechersk district. Worth visiting! 3 Saperne Pole Str. Medical experts prove that walking outdoors has many benefits. But due to laziness and lack of time, people often neglect these simple means of getting exercise. Since July 14, a trip on the metro, bus, tram, trolleybus, or funicular has risen in cost to UAH 8. Before, it was almost half that price, but public buses and underground trains are still overcrowded at rush hours. The increase in fares raised the ire of many Ukrainians, so they’re praying for a price reduction! But perhaps there’s a positive side to the higher prices. By raising the cost of a trip on ground transport or the metro, the Kyiv authorities encourage residents to follow a healthier lifestyle and hoof it some of the time. We may even become the world’s healthiest nation! One never can tell.

10 Exciting Ideas for Celebrating Independence Day 2018

AUGUST SEPTEMBER 2018

Glory to Ukraine!

10 Exciting Ideas for Celebrating Independence Day 2018 Soon, on August 24, the vibrant blue and yellow colors of the Ukrainian flag will adorn the streets of every Ukrainian city to commemorate an important national event: Independence Day.

It has been the main state holiday in modern Ukraine since the Declaration of Independence from the USSR was adopted in 1991. On August 24, 1991, Ukraine joined the family of Independent nations worldwide after a centuries-long struggle for sovereignty. Our country has come a long way from being a part of the USSR to independence and Euro integration. We are happy to congratulate all Ukrainians on the 27th anniversary of our independence. On this festive day, we invite our readers to get valuable insights into the colorful world of Ukrainian festive symbols and traditions, and to take an inspiring walk through the most prominent and historically important sights of our beloved capital.

Symbolism & Traditions

U

kraine has a unique and diverse culture based on ancient Slavic traditions and symbols. The national flag colors symbolize the blue, peaceful sky above and yellow wheat fields below. It reflects the special role agriculture has played in Ukraine (once known as the “bread basket of Europe"). Special attention in Ukrainian art is dedicated to the idealized woman (Berehynia) as a symbol of wellness and fruitfulness, and as the protectress of the home. In 2001, a column with a monument to Berehynia (also known as the Independence Monument) was con-

structed atop Independence Square. She holds a branch of the kalyna tree (the natural symbol of Ukraine) and is considered Kyiv’s defender. Ukrainian traditional dance forms and music mostly come from the Cossack era (15th-18th century). Fast-paced, energetic folk dances (hopak, cossachok) and sentimental songs often represent Ukraine at International festivals. Many people do not know that the world-famous Christmas song “Carol of the Bells” was written by Ukrainian composer Nikolai Leontovich (and is known in Ukraine as “Shchedryk”). www.kievcheckin.com

Grand Opening of the Museum of Ukrainian Song The beauty of Ukraine’s prolific song culture is recognized and appreciated worldwide. Ukrainian songs regularly take top place in various International contests. However, there was no institution devoted to this art until now. The new Museum of Ukrainian Song will set this straight on August 24. From 11 am to 2 pm you are welcome to participate in the grand opening of the museum at Ukrainian House. Among the exhibits are folklore collections, original scores, video archives (DVD recordings feature concerts by prominent Ukrainians artists), audio archives, a photo archive featuring portraits of famous Ukrainian singers, memorable concert posters, related books, etc. Ukrainian House (12 Khreschatyk Str.)

Kyiv Independence Day Parade Traditionally, on the morning of August 24, Ukrainians attend the annual military parade on Khreshchatyk Str. and Maidan Nezalezhnosti. Here you will have a chance to watch hundreds pieces of equipment and thousands of soldiers taking part in the parade.

Spiritual Depth of Ukrainian Art Dotted with beautiful churches, art galleries and souvenir shops, Andriyivsky Descent is a favourite spot for tourists in Kyiv. This extremely beautiful ancient street is adorned with numerous paintings by talented Ukrainian artists presented in the open air and offered for sale on the spot. You will be fascinated by the uniquely creative atmosphere developed by artists and craftsmen, the main inhabitants of these streets. As you go up the descent, just before Saint Andrew’s Church, turn to the left and you will find an alley fully packed with works of art.

Absolute Must-try: Cabbage borsch If you are hungry for new dining experiences it’s time to head to Kanapa, an outstanding restaurant serving modern Ukrainian cuisine, is also famous for its excellent serving of dishes. Powerful Spirit of “Pechersk Hills”

Independence Day is a great occasion to scroll around the central Pechersk district, where the main governmental buildings are located. We advise starting your route at Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine (our Parliament), admire the beauty of the recently renovated Mariinsky Palace, located nearby, which serves as the official ceremonial residence of the President; then stop for a while at the observation deck, enjoying simply wonderful panoramic views on the left bank of Kyiv, cross the Lover’s Bridge, traditionally covered with many love locks, with its scenic panorama, and finish the walk at the picturesque Saint Volodymyr Hill Park, with its monument to Volodymyr, the king who Christianized Kievan Rus and, according to legend, observed from this spot the mass christening of Kyiv’s citizens.

Okean Elzy concert This is the only concert scheduled this year by the legendary, much-beloved Ukrainian band Okean Elzy, and the first concert after an almost year-long pause. The group invites everyone to celebrate Independence Day surrounded by friends enjoying memorable songs, amid an ocean of smiles and heartfelt tears of happiness. Nothing but the energy of Svyatoslav Vakarchuk, unison singing, thousand of flashlights, nothing but music. Entrance fee: UAH 550-3500. Vyshyvanka Style It’s hard to find anything more thoroughly Ukrainian than the vyshyvanka – an embroidered shirt that is part of the Ukrainian national costume. It is traditionally adorned with black, red or blue motifs and has its own distinctive design that varies by region. A vyshyvanka is a valuable souvenir that can reveal a lot about Ukraine, its culture, and traditions. Usually, the handmade vyshyvanka will cost $40-$50, rising to more than $600 for exclusive versions. Nowadays it is very popular and stylish to wear vyshyvanka on holidays, especially on Independence Day of Ukraine. Narodniy Dim Ukraine (4 Prorizna Str., Khreschatyk metro station)

Pottery Making Ukrainians rightfully claim to be among the best in the world at this ancient craft. Masterfully shaped and decorated pots became the symbols of the Cucuteni-Trypillian culture (6000-3500 BC), one of the earliest European civilizations. It’s said potters of that time used magic spells to make certain pots and used them in ancient rituals. Plunge your hands into fresh clay and share the pleasure of making pottery with many Kyiv folk-art lovers. relax.com.ua/master-class/pottery +38 063 443 99 09

Boost your creativity at Comic Con Ukraine

If festivals were rated on how many surprises they gave visitors, cosplay (“costume play”) events would surely top the charts. The superb creativity inspired enthusiasts apply to their costumes and the spectacular way they manage to bring to life characters from computer games, movies, comics, shows and cartoons would definitely rock your world! All over the world, it’s become hobby #1 with people of all ages. In Ukraine, where cosplay used to be art for art’s sake, cosplay conventions are made by fans and for fans. And this fall (Sept. 22-23) Kyiv will host a grand event – Comic Con Ukraine – that will bring together geeks and pop-culture fans, as well as newcomers who have never come face to face with cosplayers or role

www.kievcheckin.com

players. Comic Con will host one of Ukraine’s largest ever defile shows, equipped with all sorts of technology, to make the stage look like a gloomy dungeon, or a spaceship - whatever cosplayers need. It will also mark the first time role-playing enthusiasts will be full-fledged participants of a cosplay forum. And that’s a tribute they deserve, because role-playing was a predecessor of the cosplay boom in Ukraine. Experienced in reinvention and using all sorts of makeup, role players share a strong rivalry, and their participation makes a contest really challenging. Meanwhile, comics fans are already queuing to get festival tickets. The festival program includes a number of quests and a series of wrestling

competitions. The upcoming Comic Con Ukraine will provide a separate venue for a comics fair, featuring opportunities to meet artists and listen to novelty presentations. One of the most highly anticipated events is the presentation of Ukrainian comics dedicated to Witcher – a protagonist of a popular fandom rooted in the fantasy books of Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski. Comic Con Ukraine might be a great chance to show off your hidden talents, make friends with creative and friendly folk, and to entertain your family, even if they know nothing about cosplay and couldn’t tell a Jedi from a Sith! comiccon.ua

Portals to another reality are finally available in Kyiv for people with a thirst for new adventures. Virtual reality clubs are new to Ukraine. The capital is usually the first to develop a taste for new amusements, but even here VR clubs have only been around for about a year. However, their popularity is rising, thanks to enthusiastic response on social media by Kyivans and visitors to the city. Club owners say that many of their guests are curious but skeptical about the whole idea. Once they’ve entered a virtual reality room, however, they find themselves so engaged they end up spending hours trying to complete the game they emerged into. Among the most popular VR games offered in Kyiv VR clubs are a zombie hunt (Arizona Sunshine) and a rhythm game called Beat Saber, where you slash the beats with something very similar to a lightsaber. It’s particularly popular with

Star Wars enthusiasts. This may sound strange, but another hit of the season is a skiing simulator. Either summer is too hot, or the game is too immersive. People sometimes can’t keep their feet on the ground while skiing down the virtual slope. But of course, nothing bad happens! Venues for virtual games are equipped in such a way that people won't harm themselves. There are also attendants who follow your progress in a game and offer help when needed. For instance, they warn when you’re blindly approaching a room’s wall, or give a lift to a kid who is too small to press a virtual button above their head. Kids and adults often enjoy VR clubs in groups. Many of the games can be played in pairs or small teams of up to four people, which means fun opportunities to share a virtual trip with your family, friends or colleagues. According to club owners, some of their clients

VR games, especially sport simulators, provide them with intensive physical activity that can be compared to real training. Some time ago, virtual boxing was rather popular with VR club guests. Professional boxers came to check whether the simulator was as good as rumors had it. In 20 minutes they left the game sweating and panting. “I couldn't believe it would be so realistic,” one of them confessed. Kharkiv from above

In this festive issue, we want to share some of the secrets of Kharkiv, a city famous for a vibrant student life, abundance of wonderful parks, and remarkable architecture. Kharkiv was the capital of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic from 1919 to 1934, after which the capital was relocated to Kyiv. This is a great time to visit this spectacular city, as on August 23, the eve of Ukraine’s Independence Day, Kharkiv celebrates City Day, dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Kharkiv from Nazi invaders. Parades will fill the streets, flags will be proudly flying, and fireworks will create a nighttime spectacle.

Kharkiv From Above

Amazing Monuments

By the way, Kharkiv is known as the city where the first monument of Taras Shevchenko was installed, and it’s considered to be one of the best monuments of Kobzar in the world. The total height is more than 16 meters, and it is located in beautiful Shevchenko Park, which also merits attention. Also, there is an interesting monument of Mikhail Bulgakov on a bench with a cat Behemoth (a character from his novel The Master and Margarita) that can be found in the courtyard of Maksimilianivska Street.

The best of culture The biggest square

Begin your cultural program at Freedom Square, which is the city’s central biggest and widest square in Ukraine, and the second largest in Europe! Previously, the large monument of Lenin stood here, which was demolished during the “Leninfall’ in 2014. For a Queen concert in 2008, the square hosted about 350,000 people!

Back in the U.S.S.R

As Kharkiv was the capital of Soviet Ukraine, you will find unique examples of Soviet architecture: have a look at Derzhprom, or the Palace of Industry, which was the first Soviet skyscraper, while The Building with a spire will amaze you with its bewitching Stalinist Empire style and mysterious night illumination.

Sacred areas

Among the tourist attractions becoming more and more famous are Kharkiv’s ancient churches. We recommend starting with Intercession Cathedral. It is the oldest preserved building in Kharkiv. Then climb the hill next to the Dormition Cathedral, which dates to the 17th century and, if you’re lucky, pop in to listen to a concert of organ music. At the end, visit Annunciation Cathedral. The cathedral is huge and displays an unusual combination of several styles.

Entertainment Bucket List Ukrainian Disneyland

For those who are serious about fun, we recommend starting with one of the largest outdoor entertainment centers in Europe: Maxim Gorky Park. According to the tourist website TripAdvisor, the park is recognized as one of Europe’s Top 20 best amusement parks. Here’s you’ll find the biggest observation wheel in Ukraine. The 55-meter-high attraction offers guests a stunning 360-degree city view! The famous Kharkiv cableway, which is 1.5 kilometers long, connects the main street of Kharkiv, Sumska Street, with the Pavlovo Pole area. During your trip, you will experience the true beauty of the amusement park, the V.N. Karazin Botanical Garden, the center of Kharkiv and the Forest Park right from your cabin! Besides these highlights, the park is full of crazy attractions, sports playgrounds, autodromes, and curious squirrels tame enough to feed by hand!

Romantic vibes

One of the most romantic places in Kharkiv is Strilka Square, on Netechenska Quay. Strilka Square is perfect for romantic evening strolls along the quay; afterwards, you can hang your “love lock” on the bridge. You may also hire a boat and enjoy an amorous evening together on the river.

MEDICAL TOURISM IN UKRAINE

For many people in need of medical assistance, the last thing they want do is to travel. However, Ukraine is lucky to have a convenient geographical position, rich recreational resources, and low-cost healthcare services, which together have made it one of the most popular destinations for medical tourism. In particular, our country has long been an attractive place to seek improved health among European, American, Israeli, and UK patients. In recent years, the Ukrainian healthcare system has demonstrated a significant leap in quality of service and advances in patient comfort.

T

he medical system in Ukraine includes both public and private clinics, offering a range of related services. Under Ukrainian legislation, the state medical system is provided free of charge to all Ukrainian citizens and permanent residents. However, the quality of service in public clinics is rather poor due to insufficient state financing, which keeps doctors’ salaries low and medical facilities less than optimal. Therefore, there is a growing market for private clinics (over 30,000) that promise high standards of service and equipment in line with international standards. Additionally,

32 Kiev Check-In

numerous cost-effective recreational spa complexes are located throughout the country. The price of treatment at such private clinics and spas is significantly lower than in the rest of Europe. According to the Ukrainian Association of Medical Tourism (UAMT), nearly 50,000 foreign patients a year seek treatment in Ukraine. We decided to highlight key branches of healthcare services in Ukraine that are offered to the international community at a high level. Some of the most popular medical services in Kyiv (Ukraine) include:

R S Reproductive medicine

This is one of the key sectors that attracts foreign clients to Ukraine. Over the past 20 years, Ukrainian reproductive clinics have not only implemented modern innovations in the field of IVF (In vitro fertilization, or “test tube babies”) but have taken pride in their own progress in this area. As an example, Ukrainian doctors from the private clinic Nadiya helped pioneer the revolutionary “three-parent baby” technique, which enables a woman with a disease-causing mutation to give birth to a healthy child. “The cost of medical services in Ukraine is 30-70% lower than in other countries, whereas the quality of treatment in many clinics is on the same level as overseas,” says Violetta Yanyshevska, president of the Ukrainian Association of Medical Tourism (UAMT). The average price of an IVF cycle in Ukraine is about €3,000-5,000.

Dentistry

D

Ukraine’s modern clinics can be proud of their highly qualified dentists who specialize in well-tested methods of dental treatment. Dental clinics in Ukraine offer such services as aesthetic dentistry, implant treatment, prosthodontics, endodontics, dental surgery, orthodontics, and periodontology. Dental care in Ukraine will cost you 70% less than in the UK or the USA. Take a look at the approximate prices in USD for some dental services in Kyiv: fillings, $14-$250; implantation, $390-$890; prosthetics, $17-$430.

Surrogate Maternity

Unlike in many other countries, where surrogate maternity is either not regulated by law, restricted on a commercial basis, or inadmissible for religious reasons, it has been legal in Ukraine since 2004 and is thought of here as morally acceptable. Since surrogacy is a big decision, in Ukraine the required genetic material is taken from both future parents or third-party donors. Therefore, a surrogate is never the biological mother of a baby. Still, a woman who agrees to take part in the program as a surrogate mother is required to pass a thorough medical check-up. The cost of these services ranges from $35,000 to $45,000.

Ophthalmology

O

With a focus on laser surgery, Ukrainian ophthalmology clinics apply the latest advances in the healing of cataracts, glaucoma, and severe myopia. On average, you will save 35%–40% on eye treatment in Kyiv. For example, eye laser surgery costs about $400-$850, making it a quite popular procedure in Ukraine.

S C O C Stem-cell therapy and banking

Nowadays, this type of healing is in high demand among medical tourists in Ukraine. Stem cells are widely used by specialized Kyiv clinics for nervous system care, treatment of hematological diseases, diabetes mellitus, and autoimmune diseases. Additionally, they are used in various innovative anti-aging programs. As an example, family cord-blood bank HEMAFUND provides storage of stem cells for about $130 per year.

Oncology

The system of hospital cancer care in Ukraine has become rather similar to that in Europe, offering varied services and world-class patient care. Cancer treatment in Ukraine functions within specialized oncological health centers that cooperate with medical universities and get state funding. Such centers provide diagnostics, prevention, treatment, supervision, and support for the client using the latest developments in nuclear medicine and molecular biology in Ukraine. Recently, the Ukrainian private health-care sector has become actively involved in this sphere, offering a range of high-tech treatment methods for their patients, including CyberKnife, stereotactic biopsy, and positron emission tomography (PET). These procedures are performed by doctors with no less than 10 years of experience working with the most advanced treatment technologies. In most cases, oncological centers are actively oriented toward international patients, providing interpreters and English-speaking staff within state (public sector) hospitals in Ukraine.

Cosmetic Surgery

You will find plenty of beauty and wellness-spa salons in Kyiv, in different price categories. Due to the high demand for these services in recent years, their number has increased by 20%. Prices for these services usually are 30% lower compared to European countries and the USA. As an example, the approximate price for botox injection varies from $150 to $400, liposuction $150-350, rhinoplasty $800-$3,000, and breast augmentation $900-$5,600. We strongly recommend dealing with only reputable medical centers that are officially licensed for carrying a certain type of cosmetic surgery, with professionally certified staff.

Cardiology

Ukraine is famous for the great contribution in the field of cardiology made by Soviet heart surgeon Nikolai Amosov, one of the first doctors practicing surgical intervention in the treatment of heart diseases, who thus made important breakthroughs in cardiological surgery methods. Modern cardiological clinics in Kyiv are specialized in heart disease prevention, diagnosis, therapy, surgery, anesthesiology, and rehabilitation. Ukrainian cardio rehab centers are typically reminiscent of forest retreats located in the Kyiv suburbs, the Transcarpathian region, Kherson and Dnipro. Certified staff, fresh air, and a friendly atmosphere provide a pleasant setting in which to recover. www.kievcheckin.com

Medical Tourism in Ukraine

MEDICAL TOURISM

Apart from comparatively low prices for Ukrainian medical services, the absence of long queues or waiting lists is a significant advantage for medical tourists. You will be able to get timely service, though you should note that a preliminary appointment with doctors in private clinics is still required. However, you may face certain challenges while using medical services in Ukraine: Unnecessary costs. As in some other countries, private clinics work on a for-profit basis, so they may order lots of lab work that is not always actually needed, and you may bear the extra costs. Imperfect legislation. Ukrainian legislation doesn’t always fit European standards and practices when it comes to medical law. To avoid misunderstandings, it’s a good idea to have a lawyer’s assistance when making any serious decision. Fraud. It is essential to focus on reputable clinics or organizations when choosing medical providers in Ukraine, especially those related to surrogate maternity. Since surrogate services are among the most expensive in Ukraine, it is important to carefully check all legal aspects and request a legal advisor’s assistance to avoid financial losses. Language barrier. English is still not widespread among doctors, and even the websites of medical centers often do not have an English version. Therefore, if you don’t speak Ukrainian or Russian, make sure the chosen clinic targets an international customer base, has an English-speaking clientmanager, or hires a local interpreter for better assistance.

FAMILIA DENTAL CLINIC “Yes, we really care” For more than twelve years Familia Dental Clinic has been providing its patients with various dental services and emergency dental surgery of highest quality in accordance with the European standards. In order to provide a safe, fast and painless dental treatment, we use Swiss, German and American latest technologies and the state-of-the-art methods of treatment. Our doctors regularly attend all most important exhibitions, lectures and symposiums on the innovations in the world of dentistry. MARINA EVTUSHENKO MBA, CEO of Familia Dental Clinic

arina Evtushenko, MBA, CEO of Familia Dental Clinic explains what kind of dental treatment Familia Clinic provides:

Sirona Cerec 3D computer dental restoration:

To ensure the highest quality treatment in Familia Clinic, we use Cerec technology for orthopaedic treatment and only the latest materials of the world-renowned European and American producers. This high-tech procedure allows us to make crowns, inlays or ceramic veneers after just one visit, instead of two or three visits it used to take. How do you do it? Let’s say you arrive at your dental appointment with a problematic tooth, where very little remains of your original tooth. After a thorough examination and a decision to

36 Kiev Check-In

place a crown, we will perform an intraoral camera scan. There is no need to make a physical mold of the tooth, because the computer creates a three-dimensional virtual model of your crown. After accurate modelling of the tooth, taking into account individualized shape and colour designed to blend with your own teeth, the data is transmitted from our computer to a CEREC 3D Milling Unit, where a 3D printer creates a perfect crown for you using a ceramic block. Once this is done, the dentist places and firmly attaches the crown. Now, your new crown looks natural and aesthetically appealing.

Implantation

Nowadays, implantation is the most reliable and convenient way to restore the missing tooth. The implant is a functional substitute for the dental root, small titanium fixture that interfaces with the bone

of the jaw. Implantation is accompanied by the process called osseointegration when an implant integrates into the bone tissue, allowing the restored tooth to have completely the same functions as the natural tooth. In Familia Clinic we use only worldwide known systems such as Swiss NobelActive by Nobel Biocare and Israelian Mis. How does the final result of the implantation differ from the ordinary prosthetic structure? - Provides comfort in a daily life and confidence in communication. You will never have to hide your smile or worry about the stability of your prosthetic denture. - Provides functionality. You will hardly feel any difference between the implants and your natural teeth. - Provides durability. With proper care the implant ensures lifetime service. In some cases an osteoplasty procedure will be performed before implantation.

FAMILIA DENTAL CLINIC

In our clinic we can perform osteoplasty under local or general anaesthesia depending on specific indications.

Maxillofacial surgery

In our maxillofacial surgery department, we treat patients with different maxillofacial pathologies, either inherit defects, or acquired defects resulting from an accident or a disease. Our highly qualified surgeons perform operations on bone tissues and transplantations as well as fix fractured bones using the latest materials.

Osteoplasty

Osteoplasty is used when the volume of the bone tissue is not enough for a reliable and durable fixation of the implant. Artificial materials as well as human tissues received from the patient can be used as materials for bone shaping. In some cases implantation may be performed just after osteoplasty, but in general it requires a healing period of four to five months. www.kievcheckin.com

Networking in Kyiv: An Expat Guide EXPAT CORNER

AUGUST SEPTEMBER 2018

MEET OUR EXPATS

1

ANDERS OSTLUND (SWEDEN) Founder of Fryday: I came to Ukraine as I saw many opportunities here compared with Sweden, where I lived before. Living in Ukraine has been a fantastic journey, with so many great emotions and experiences. Doing business in Ukraine can be, as everywhere, a challenge, but with the right attitude and some healthy risk management, Ukraine has a lot to offer.

2

GEORGE LUPASCU PRUNA (ROMANIA) InterNations Ambassador: I have been living in Kyiv for the past six years, so I’ve been able to experience the wide range of political issues this country has been dealing with. I decided to move here after falling in love with the city from the moment I first visited it, being guided by my future wife. As my profession and credentials allow me to work almost anywhere in the world, moving here was a fairly easy step, and since 2015, I’ve been working as an accredited consultant on intercultural management and organizational change management. In Ukraine, I`ve been a business advisor to companies in various industries including companies from the retail and logistic sectors, helping them to drive initiative taking or solve the communication issues between their departments. I’ve joined InterNations in 2012, in search for English speaking new friends and in 2015 I was selected as the Ambassador for the Kyiv community, continuing the tradition of interconnecting the expats who are choosing Kyiv as their new home. In Ukraine, I particularly like the InterNations networking events as people are very friendly and if you understand the local cultural elements you can create a cozy atmosphere in which people can connect at a deeper level, developing stronger relationships.

3

JOHN JONES (USA) Former InterNations Ambassador, co-founder of MultiNations: I came to the Soviet Union when I was a university student. I moved to Irkutsk (Russia) in the late ’90s. However, I did not enjoy the winter cold, so I decided to move to Kyiv. Kyiv is close to my business and has a good airport hub. Currently, my primary business is environmental services, health and safety. Also, I am the director of business development for a solar startup called Focal Line Solar, which aims to build a factory that will export CSP panels in Ukraine and all over the world. Additionally, I cooperate with business development for the Frishberg & Partners Law Firm to provide legal services for companies dealing with migration issues to Ukraine and the USA. I was an InterNations Ambassador for a few years. Later, my two partners and I founded a new free expat community networking group called MultiNations. I also accepted the presidency of the Kyiv Lions Club for one year in July 2017.

TELL US ABOUT AN EXPAT COMMUNITY YOU REPRESENT Anders Ostlund: I founded Fryday in 2010 as a platform where the local and international business communities can meet in a nice setting and socialize for private or professional purposes. That mission has not changed since the very beginning. Today, the business communities keep coming and they pursue that mix of social and professional agendas. George Lupascu Pruna: I organize events for the InterNations community in Kyiv, and www.kievcheckin.com

I’ve chosen this platform because I travel a lot and InterNations is mostly designed for such professionals. The advantage that InterNations brings is the opportunity to join an event in a different part of the world every week (or even every day), if your job enables that for you. One event that I particularly enjoyed was InterNations’ 10year anniversary celebration, which started in Auckland at what was for Kyiv 10 a.m., then continued in Sydney, further in Jakarta, and so on, until our turn came in Kyiv to con-

tinue with the celebration. After us, it went all the way to London, New York and then Honolulu, while keeping us connected with the other Ambassadors. That was an event that really made you feel global and connected. Our events are joined mostly by foreigners, but we also have our local members who have lived in different parts of the world and know what it is like to be a foreigner. They are willing to give a helping hand or advice in any challenging situation.

WHO AMONG OUR READERS MIGHT BE INTERESTED IN JOINING YOUR COMMUNITY? Anders Ostlund: I think most of your readers fit the profile of local and international professionals, with an interest in socializing because they are new in Kyiv, or in networking professionally because they are running a company in Kyiv. Fryday has no official criteria for joining; anybody with an interest in our community and who shares our values can join. All it takes is

to come to a Fryday event or subscribe to any of our online channels, and you are a part of Fryday’s community. George Lupascu Pruna: The InterNations platform can be joined by anyone who travels a lot, has a passion for foreign languages, or simply wants to enjoy the company of foreigners. Enjoying such events is the most impor-

tant criterion. In general, in expat networking events it is crucial to understand that the world is full of diversity, of people who hold different and sometimes opposite values than yours. To join the community, go to the website and apply to be accepted. In München (InterNations’ headquarters), the application is evaluated and a response goes out fairly quickly.

WHY SAY “YES” TO NETWORKING IN UKRAINE? George Lupascu Pruna: Ukraine is the biggest country in Europe with a great economic potential. The Ukrainians are closer in values to the Western world than the people from other developing countries, so doing business here is easier. Ukraine is a tourism and entertainment mecca, offering almost all the services and

possibilities one could wish for. Having trustworthy friends and acquaintances will help you get the best service or deal. John Jones: Kyiv is the “Biggest Little Capital in Europe.” People are more relaxed and open to meeting in Ukraine. This country is small

enough to be relaxed and friendly, and big enough to have everything a company needs. It is one of the few places where expats can live side by side with all other nationalities and ethnic groups. Ukraine offers great opportunities for business, especially in IT, engineering, ag, medicine, shipbuilding.

IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT ARE THE GREAT NETWORKING PLACES IN KYIV? John Jones: There are many options for networking in Ukraine, at all levels and fields. Some good ones are the British Ukrainian Chamber of Commerce (my personal favorite), the Ukrainian-Austrian Association, the Rotary Club, CouchSurfing, Language Exchange Club Kyiv, the American Chamber of Commerce, and America House. There are numerous groups

40 Kiev Check-In

that require an entry fee to their events, but I feel this is unnecessary and the commercial nature of it detracts from networking with locals. In addition, the Art Zavod Platforma venue as well as the Irish/ English pubs are great for events, networking and friendships. The Caribbean Club and Habana are good places for dancing and meeting the international community.

Anders Ostlund: Fryday is the only one, of course. George Lupascu Pruna: There are many places to connect with other people and foreigners in Kyiv, but I’ve chosen to join InterNations because this platform best fits my worldwide travel needs.

EXPAT CORNER

WHAT MAKES NETWORKING IN UKRAINE SPECIAL? WHAT ARE THE CULTURAL CHARACTERISTICS OF UKRAINIANS TO KEEP IN MIND WHILE SOCIALIZING IN KYIV? John Jones: Ukraine is special; it is very open to foreigners. Ukrainians are genuinely interested to know about other peoples and cultures and to improve their knowledge of languages and business. When Ukrainian attend a networking event, they tend to dress well: suit & tie, dress. So Westerns who prefer casual style tend to feel underdressed. But Ukrainians (especially younger people) are pretty relaxed about this. Anders Ostlund: Networking in Ukraine does not differ so much from other places as to warrant special behaviour. It is worth keeping in mind for a foreigner that Ukrainians are fairly direct and will ask you for benefits very soon after you meet. You might also face a tendency to “fire and forget” with referrals. Often, people don’t think with a long-term perspective. These characteristics can be found everywhere in the world, though, so it’s worth keeping in mind wherever you are. One interesting local point I would like to share is nicknames. Ukrainian nicknames are like a mystery—and a jungle. While in Sweden Oskar is Oskar and it would be very strange if someone called him something else, in Ukraine, you might hear five or six variations of the same name, and it’s good to be aware of that. George Lupascu Pruna: As I am a licensed practitioner on cultural differences I could tell you a lot about this, but I’ll try to be as brief as the article allows us to. There are six cultural dimensions in Prof. Hofstede’s model, that capture the different central tendencies in most of the societies: power distance (PDI), individualism (IDV), masculinity (MAS), uncertainty avoidance (UAI), long term orientation (LTO) and indulgence (IVR). Going briefly through these dimensions for Ukraine will give us the following. On PDI, Ukraine scores 92—very hierarchical—which has the impact that nationality matters for Ukrainians. For example, Ukrainians will treat foreigners coming from Western Europe or the U.S. much better than their co-nationals. Age and function matter as well, so you will find it difficult to start a conversation with someone visibly older than you or who considers himself/herself of a higher position, unless of course it is obvious that you’re a foreigner. On IDV, Ukraine scores 25—quite collectivist—which means that it will take you a long time to earn the Ukrainians’ trust, unless you are already good friends with one or two Ukrainians, which in that case means their friends will become your good friends in no time. It is doubtful that anyone will achieve a trusting relationwww.kievcheckin.com

EXPAT CORNER Networking in Kyiv: An Expat Guide ship just from an official networking event, so if you get the feeling that’s happening, better think twice. On MAS, Ukraine scores 27— quite a feminine society— which explains why ensuring a pleasant life is more important than improving the business. Pushing for a deal might get you the opposite result, so allow time to build the re-

lationship. On UAI, Ukraine scores 95—very uncertainty avoidant— which explains why the Ukrainians express their emotions easily, be it happiness, anger or frustration. Join in that expressivity, as that is a good sign. On LTO, Ukraine scores in the middle, 55, explaining why, in business, Ukrainians will mostly look for fast wins and not really

AUGUST SEPTEMBER 2018

care to invest in long-term business relationships. If you feel the opposite, take some more time to think things through. On IVR, Ukraine scores a low 18, explaining why there are so many people who believe that life is hard and work is even harder and that they should better learn to get used to that, versus trying to change something.

SHARE YOUR TIPS ON HOW TO OVERCOME NERVOUSNESS AND SHOW YOURSELF IN THE BEST LIGHT DURING SUCH EVENTS Anders Ostlund: Easy. Prepare yourself for the event in advance. Ask yourself: Where is it? Who will be there? Can I bring a friend or colleague to support me? The best way to overcome fear is to practice visiting such events. No theory will help, I think. Keep mingling until you find people you like, or ask the host who might be a good fit for you. Try to make a person feel comfortable, try to find the common ground. No magic here.

42 Kiev Check-In

George Lupascu Pruna: This is one of the reasons why InterNations has such a thorough selection process for its Ambassadors. As an Ambassador you’re constantly watching to see whether a newcomer has joined the event and needs introductions, so that we make it easier for the new members to attend our events and become quickly integrated. In InterNations, you can simply approach a group, say “hi,” and mention that you are new. Our members will take care of the rest.

John Jones: Everyone attending a networking event is there to meet people. Ninety-nine percent are open and friendly. Look for people who are smiling and look relaxed. While trying to make conversation, work the room. One by one, greet people and introduce yourself, and you will quickly find a connection to someone. Remember, most networkers are happy to help a sincere and honest person. Don’t be shy. Smile and walk with a spring in your step.

www.kievcheckin.com

EXPAT CORNER

AUGUST SEPTEMBER 2018

ARE THERE ANY SPECIAL DO’S AND DON’TS WHILE NETWORKING IN UKRAINE? Anders Ostlund: My first observation about networking in an international community is that there is no “normal.” Don’t assume the other person has the same references or knowledge or awareness that you have. When avoiding the presumption of normal, you also open up a whole series of topics to be discussed. Different countries have their own different styles, and they all have their different normals. For example, for me it was a challenge at the beginning to deal with the Ukrainian temper. The same person can be furious at the beginning and then very cool and smiling two minutes later. Versus in Sweden, we have this mellow temper, so that when a Swedish person is angry and upset with you, he is gonna be angry for a long time, it could be forever almost. It is also very important to succeed in making a positive lasting impression. Often, people say the same things as all the others, and thus, people often forget them. So the most important thing is to be remembered in a positive way; that’s what we want to achieve. When you are finishing the conversation, try to come up with something positive and add value for that person — there might be something that’s easy for you to do. After the event, the best thing is to write a short note saying that it was nice to see you at that event and express hope that you can touch base soon again. Then it’s a great idea to connect on social media. Also, write a thank-you note to a host. These messages don’t have to be essays; keep it short — thanks, and keep in touch. If you received such a message from somebody else, reply nicely. Overall, keep your promises, and stay in touch over time. Thus, they will remember you and you will be top-of-mind, the first one they think of in your field. George Lupascu Pruna: As Ukraine is a collectivistic society, people pay attention to all the details related to a conversation, from the tone of voice to the word choice and all the way to the whole interaction history between the two of you. Also being too direct might come off as offensive. John Jones: • Be polite • Speak clearly. Avoid foul language. • Be open and approach people in good faith. • Remember you are an ambassador of your country and your culture. • Smile, be open and honest. • Don’t take advantage of naiveté or inexperience. • Remember: any expat community is diverse, uniting people with different goals and world views, and there is no reason to trust everybody. Don’t accept everything as the truth. Verify everything if it is something important. The biggest danger to an expat is another expat. We tend to trust other expats too easily, as we think they must be like ourselves. • Most important is to have fun networking and make new friends from around the world. www.kievcheckin.com

DOING BUSINESS IN UKRAINE Tips for Foreigners 2018

Following the recent reforms and closer ties with West, Ukraine is gradually becoming an attractive, albeit still difficult, place to do business and invest for the foreign business community. Regardless of still weak political, legal, and financial climate in the country, Ukraine has an excellent geographic location, the largest territory in Europe, rich natural resources, and a low cost but skilled workforce. Ukraine’s confusing regulatory regime, ever-changing regulations and significant red tape can cost foreign investors significant money and time. In our experience, every day we encounter front-facing government staff, bank representatives, private consultants, and notaries who are not aware of the latest changes and provide incorrect information. But these challenges are by no means insurmountable, the savvy entrepreneur can easily find his/her way past to make some great investments. Here’s a list of business tips for any foreign individual exploring doing business or investing in Ukraine. Note that law and regulations change frequently, therefore always consult for the latest updates before making any decisions! PERSONAL BANK ACCOUNTS As a foreign national (resident or non-resident), you are allowed to open the following types of personal bank accounts in Ukraine: •Regular current and savings accounts in the local currency UAH and selected foreign currencies. •An Investment Account that allows foreigners to make investments into Ukraine and subsequently repatriate profits and capital out of the country. Keep the following points in mind when opening and operating your bank account in Ukraine: •Rules for bank accounts vary depending on the type and are strictly regulated by Ukrainian Banking law. For example, you are not allowed to withdraw cash from your investment bank account (whereas it is possible from a regular current bank account). Therefore, use the type of bank account that corresponds to your planned purpose and transactions. •In order to deposit any amount of cash on your bank account in Ukraine, Ukrainian Banking law requires that

44 Kiev Check-In

you provide the bank with a document, evidencing origin of the cash (e.g., customs declaration). Therefore, if you bring cash to Ukraine and plan to deposit it on your bank account, you should declare at customs control such amount even if you bring to Ukraine amount which is less than equivalent of EUR 10,000. •You can use your debit card (linked to your regular current account) when making purchases overseas as well as withdraw cash, subject to certain limits. STARTING A COMPANY While there are a number of different business structures available in Ukraine, the most suitable limited liability structure for a small- to midsized business in Ukraine is a Limited Liability Company (LLC). Both resident and non-resident foreigners are free to incorporate an LLC and can be 100% shareholders of the company. Points to note when opening an LLC: •The process of incorporating a company is fairly straightforward and can be completed in 1-2 working days

TETIANA YAKOVENKO Director of ContactUkraine LLC www.contactukraine.com after all the necessary documents are ready. •Prior to registration of an LLC, foreign shareholders need to obtain a Ukrainian tax number. •There are no minimum requirements to share capital amount of LLC company. •The director of an LLC can be only an individual who has a right to reside in Ukraine (a citizen of Ukraine, or a permanent citizen or foreign individual who has obtained a work and residence permit in Ukraine). Corporate directors are not permitted. •A Ukrainian company must have a local registered address. •Foreign entrepreneurs who wish to relocate to Ukraine to operate their company can apply for relocation visa (work permit & residence permit), which is subject to approval by authorities. It’s important to work with a knowledgeable and competent corporate services provider that knows the latest regulations to ensure the accuracy and timeliness of the work done. WORK AND RESIDENCE PERMITS Work and residence permits are two different permits issued to foreigners. With the exception of few situations, www.kievcheckin.com

AUGUST SEPTEMBER 2018 both permits are required when relocating to operate or work for a company in Ukraine. Keep in mind the following: •Foreign entrepreneurs who have opened their LLC company in Ukraine will need to apply for both permits if they wish to relocate to Ukraine (as an exception, those shareholders who invested EUR 100,000 in share capital of a company can get temporary residence permit without being employed in Ukraine and work permit application). The same is true when the company in Ukraine is hiring other foreign staff. •Certain categories of foreign citizens (such as permanent residents of Ukraine, employees of representative offices and permanent establishments of foreign companies, representatives of foreign mass media, professional athletes, artists and some others) do not need to apply for work permits when working in Ukraine (but they still need to obtain residence permits). However, in most other cases, a valid work permit is required before commencing work. •There is no «general» work permit in Ukraine. Work permit is issued for the specific job with Ukrainian company. Work permit can be issued up to 3 years. The processing time for a work permit application is 7 working days. •After the work permit application has been approved, the permit holder must obtain a temporary residence permit. Family members are also eligible to obtain the temporary residence permit. Obtaining a residence permit takes up to 15 days upon application. BUYING REAL-ESTATE Due to attractive prices in the current Ukrainian real-estate market, foreign investors are increasingly interested in purchasing residential property here. However, the real-estate market in Ukraine is not very mature and therefore often fraught with significant difficulties and risks at almost every step of the transaction. It’s extremely important to work with a knowledgeable and trustworthy legal advisor when dealing with real-estate in Ukraine. Here are some basic guidelines: •It is important to perform the deal and payment strictly in accordance with Ukrainian Civil, Banking and Investment law to avoid future difficulties with the repatriation of investments and investment income. www.kievcheckin.com

Doing Business in Ukraine •Proper due diligence as well as proper legal planning and examination of real-estate transactions are crucial while investing in real-estate in Ukraine due to risk of fraud. •The commission of real-estate agencies is typically around 3–5% from the real-estate purchase price, payable only if the deal is concluded. Real-estate agencies are not regulated and do not require a license to operate. Therefore, we highly recommend that you also use an independent real-estate legal lawyer to assist you with proper advice when concluding your transaction. PAYING FOR INVESTMENTS Foreign nationals are allowed to pay for their investments in Ukraine (opening a business, buying real-estate or other type of investment) in two possible ways: •Directly from their account overseas (in this case, payment is made in foreign currency); -or•By opening an investment bank account in Ukraine. In this case, the foreign national must transfer money in foreign currency to the investment account, convert it to local currency hryvna (UAH), and then pay for the investment in the local currency. Note that an investment account is the only type of bank account in Ukraine for foreign individuals that allows them to make settlements for their investments. TAXES Tax rate in Ukraine depends on the type of taxpayer and his income. The base tax rates are listed below: •Corporate tax rate: 18% •Individual income tax rate: 18% plus 1.5% military tax •Social security tax: 22% (applicable as part of payroll tax) •VAT: 20% •Individuals registered as Private Entrepreneur (similar to Sole Proprietorship in other countries) and listed under the Simplified Tax Scheme (3rd Group): 3–5% Note that the Ukrainian tax code defines specific rates for certain types of income or transactions which can be different from the ones mentioned above. In addition, some types of income/transactions are exempt from taxation. Therefore, to define applicable tax rate for each specific case, it is important to get professional advice.

BUSINESS

GETTING A UKRAINIAN TAX NUMBER As a foreigner, if you are planning to work, invest, or start a business in Ukraine, most likely you will need to obtain a Ukrainian tax number. Therefore, it’s usually a good idea to get this done as soon as possible. If you are overseas, the application for tax number can be filed by your representative in Ukraine under a Power of Attorney. The application processing time is about 3 working days. HIRING STAFF In Ukraine, a company can hire people either under labour agreement (i.e. as a salaried employee) or under civil services agreement (i.e. as a freelancer, provided the person being hired is registered as a Private Entrepreneur (PE)). If hired as a salaried employee, the company should assume roughly 40% tax overhead on top of the salary in-hand to the employee. On the other hand, in a freelancing arrangement, the salary tax burden is approx. 5%. As a result of this anomaly, many companies tend to reduce their costs by arranging staff as a mix of freelancers and full-time staff. However, such a structure requires careful tax and legal planning in order to avoid getting on the wrong side of the law. MISTAKES IN DOCUMENTATION This is the last tip we have for you today, but it is certainly not the least! Unfortunately in Ukraine, you will often find that important agreements and documents that are prepared for you may contain misprints and errors. This can be caused by a number of reasons including lack of professional quality controls, lack of use of computer technology and automation or overworked staff. What should you do? A simple solution is to presume that the documents may contain errors and have them double-checked by your trusted local professional advisor.
