WHAT’S NEW IN THE CITY ENTERTAINMENT

What’s New in the City? UKRAINIAN NAMED THE MOST HANDSOME MAN IN THE WORLD

It is a well-known fact that Ukrainian women are considered the world’s most beautiful. But Ukrainian men are no laggards in the eye-candy category. Ukrainian Bohdan Yusypchuk, a 29-year-old star of theatre and cinema, was named the world’s most handsome man in the Mister Sea World 2018 contest held in May in Peru. Bohdan won the title of Mister Ukraine in 2014, and in 2018 received the title of Mr. Congeniality as well as third place in the Mr. World extreme sports competition in London. We are proud!

NEW DIRECT FLIGHT KYIV – NEW DELHI

Since May 1, 2018, UIA has launched direct scheduled flights between Kyiv and Delhi four times a week. To celebrate, a series of events was organized at the New Delhi International Airport, as well as a press conference for Ukrainian, Indian and international media, with the participation of the Ambassador of Ukraine in India, the leaders of UIA, tour operators etc. Thanks to the liberalization of visa rules, tourist flow between India and Ukraine increased by 33% in 2017 over the previous year. With direct flights to New Delhi, significant growth in travel is expected, along with strengthened connections between the two countries. The annual Charity Viennese Ball, held April 21 at the Kyiv City State Administration, raised more than UAH 800,000 for children’s rehabilitation through the city’s rehab center for kids with disabilities. This year’s ball was dedicated to sports achievements, in honor of the upcoming Champions League final in Kyiv. The anthem of UEFA became the leitmotif of the ball, and famous football players surprised the guests ...with a themed version of the galop (traditional dance)! Among the sports guests honored at the ball were Andrey Pyatov, Alexander Shovkovsky, Alexei Mikhailichenko, and Grigory Surkis; the latter offered his own collection of rare balls to the auction and won it back for himself at the cool price of UAH 200,000! JUNE JULY 2018

Enjoy a glass of wine on the Kyiv Sea If you’re a sea-lover, but can’t afford to take a break at the moment, we have our own Kyiv Sea not far from the city. The Kyiv Sea is one of the six reservoirs in cascade on the Dnipro river within the Kyiv and Chernihiv regions, created with a dam by the Kyiv hydroelectric station. It’s not the type of sea with sun loungers and girls in bikinis, though. Swimming is forbidden, but it seems that this place was never destined for swimming, more for standing and staring, listening to nature and to your inner self. An interesting fact is that a stage of the Formula 1 Powerboat World Championship was held in the area of the Kyiv Sea in 2011. Some of the powerboats achieved a speed of more than 200 km/h. Today, there are also convenient tracks for cycling beside the sea, and scenic spots for picnics. Located near Vyshhorod (Kyiv oblast),     you can take a bus to Vyshhorod from     Heroiv Dnipra metro station (Blue line)

Catch Vitamin D on Trukhaniv Island

2

Uniquely occurring just in the city center, Trukhaniv Island is one of the best landscapes for riding a bicycle, roller-skating or just strolling. You can also find pitches for playing football and volleyball, a rope park, various cafes, and free-of-charge beaches where you can swim and sunbathe. If you prefer a more luxurious location, pick one of the private resorts available there and enjoy such facilities as swimming pools, tennis courts and banqueting halls. At night, Trukhaniv Island becomes a small State of entertainment with its nightclub, Southern Coast of Kyiv. It’s Kyiv’s own Ibiza, in brief! The island is usually full of people, enjoying cocktails and loud music, dancing and chatting with new friends. In summer, a variety of festivals happen here. Don't forget that you are near the Dnipro river, so take full advantage of the amazing views of Podil, the Pedestrian Bridge, illuminated so brightly at night that wherever you stand, its beauty is unmissable. Take a deep breath and enjoy the fabulous vista!

How to get there: walk from Poshtova Ploshcha metro     station (Blue line) to the Pedestrian Bridge, which leads    to Trukhaniv Island.

Get inspired by a spectacular sunrise near the monument honouring Kyi, Shchek, Khoryv and their sister Lybid This place in Kiev is considered majestic and inspirational with breathtaking views of the Left Bank of Kiev and the Dnipro River. It is perfect for watching the sun rise and feeling very tiny near this monument of historical figures who, according to legend, founded our capital. Take some snacks with you and be ready to start a new day with pleasure.

Zamkova Gora (Castle Hill) is 80 meters above the Dnipro River, which makes it possible to admire the magnificent picture of Podil, Andriyivskyy Descent, rainbow houses of Vozdvizhenka. ZABOROVSKY GATE AND ARTS CENTER LOKATSIYA

2

These two are situated in little-known Heorhiivskyi Lane. The Lokatsiya arts center is a mix of gallery, workshop studio, exhibition hall and cafe, housed on the second floor of building 7. The cherry on top at this location is its incredible view of the famous Saint Sophia Cathedral, with an unusual angle that may surprise citizens and Kyiv tourists alike. Just a few dozen steps from the building, you will find the hidden main entrance to the grounds of the former residence of the Metropolitan of Kyiv, in the area of Cathedral-Zaborovsky Gate (in Ukrainian, Brama Zaborovskoho). Built in the 18th century, the building is one of the most brilliant samples of Ukrainian baroque style. www.location-art.com

ARTPRYCHAL

ArtPrychal (Art Pier) is a creative arts space that hosts a variety of concerts, exhibitions and performances, located in the city center on the bank of the Dnipro River. Whether it’s morning or evening, its location and art gallery always make it worth a visit. Nearby you can sit and enjoy views of the Dnipro River, feast your eyes on Trukhaniv Island and the Pedestrian Bridge, greet the professional fishermen who frequent the area while meditatively waiting for a great catch, and relax. Before your visit, I recommend checking the event poster on ArtPrychal’s Facebook page (www.facebook.com/pg/artprichal1).

KYIV’S ALLEY OF ARTISTS

As you walk down the descent just past Saint Andrew’s Church, turn right and you’ll find a recently renovated alley adorned with numerous paintings by talented Ukrainian artists. Most of the open-air art is available to purchase on the spot. The alley goes from Andriivskyi descent to Saint Vladimir Hill. My favorite location here is the lovely arbor where you may sit and enjoy charming views of the Dnipro River.

The cozy and very atmospheric Lypynskoho Street is near the city’s Golden Gate (accessed via Zoloti Vorota metro station). It leads to a picturesque area once known as Kyiv Switzerland. You will be amazed by the brilliant local architecture here, infused with many unusual facades, columns and statues. In this area, you’ll also find a center of sports life, the Kyiv Velodrome. Opened way back in 1913, it is one of the oldest bicycle tracks in Europe still in operation. (Hours: 7 a.m.– 9 p.m.; bicycle rental is available). Photo: afisha.bigmir.net www.kievcheckin.com

The Reitarska Str. neighborhood, which has many interesting backyards, is famous for a pair of unusual inhabitants: two black crows that have been cared for in a large cage there for many years, ostensibly because they were injured and unlikely to survive in the wild, and who absolutely love attention. On the grounds of the famous Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, there is an art space developed by students, located in the left tower of the main building (37 Peremohy Ave.) This is a venue for many free lectures and cultural events that includes well-kept lounge zones. You will be amazed by this cozy and unusual campus and the educational institution housed there, whose architectural atmosphere may put you in mind of Hogwarts. There are charming views from the balcony of the tower, which is open from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays, and noon to 8 p.m. on Saturdays. If this is your first visit, it’s better to ask a guard or a student to show you the way.

INDIA & UKRAINE Breathing in the benefits of yoga

JUNE JULY 2018

Breathing in the benefits of yoga:

In conversation with H.E. Manoj K. Bharti, Ambassador of India in Ukraine

O

n 21 June, the fourth International Day of Yoga will be observed by millions around the world. Since its inception in 2015, the Indian Government has been active in promoting events and activities worldwide to mark the day: from special events at the United Nations exploring the role of yoga as a tool for achieving sustainable development goals to mass practice gatherings in towns and cities and attempts to establish Guinness World Records. This year, India's embassy in Kyiv will be hosting a "Yoga Marathon" on Khreshchatyk Street on 23 June, which the embassy hopes will set a record for the largest mass yoga gathering in Europe to date. Kiev Check-in sat down with His Excellency Manoj J. Bhari, India's Ambassador to Ukraine, to discuss the value of yoga, as well as his thoughts on Ukraine's growing ties with India.

2 1

Thank you so much for taking the time to talk to us. Could you tell us what the main purpose of the Yoga Marathon is, and what message you would like to communicate to Ukrainians wishing to participate? In the past three years, International Day of Yoga has grown increasingly popular in Ukraine. The day helps people to feel motivated to get involved in yoga, and this year, we would like to reach even more Ukrainians and demonstrate that practicing yoga is not difficult—in fact, anyone can get involved. You don't have to have any specific religious beliefs, and you can be any fitness level. It's a practice session so you can come and try it out for free, and start to appreciate the real meaning of yoga.

38 Kiev Check-In

Why do you think practicing yoga is so important? There's a famous Sanskrit verse which says that the purpose of yoga is to control deviations of the mind. According to Indian philosophy, the mind and body are intimately connected. If the mind is not healthy, the body will suffer too. Yoga trains you to control the mind so that your body remains healthy. I like to refer to it as providing an instruction manual for the human body. If you buy a piece of technology, you will generally need to refer to an instruction manual. The human body is probably the most complicated piece of equipment ever made, but do we know how to operate it? No. But yoga provides you with that instruction manual. Of course, it takes a lot of practice to reach the point where you can truly focus the mind.

3

The terms "yoga" and "meditation" seem to be thrown about interchangeably these days. Could you explain how they differ? To understand the difference, you need to look at Indian philosophy – the essence of which is the search for an absolute truth. But the truth is not limited to a three-dimensional world, and so meditation is the only way to reach it. But one can't simply sit down and meditate – try it, and you'll quickly find your mind wandering. Yoga is the means through which you can ensure your body is fit and your mind focused. So in other words, yoga is the vehicle through which you can reach a meditative state, and meditation is the vehicle through which you reach the absolute truth. www.kievcheckin.com

4

Are there any particular locations in Kyiv – or Ukraine in general – that you think are suitable for yoga? For a beginner, you need somewhere quiet. If you can find quietness in your bedroom, nothing can be better than that. Otherwise, I feel there are many places in Kyiv which would be wonderful locations for yoga. There is such a beautiful river with islands and warm, sandy beaches right in the heart of the city – they can really help take your mind away from the noise and buzz of the city and help you focus. But really, once you are able to focus your mind, it doesn't matter where you practice. I think the main thing to remember is that it takes time. In today's world, we are all in such a hurry, but focusing the mind doesn't happen immediately. It won't happen immediately – but don't give up! This is why having a good guide is important, as they can help keep you on the path. According to Indian philosophy, you won't find your guide – or guru -, your guru will find you. A time will come when everything will fall into place.

6

Since the days of the Soviet Union, India and Ukraine have enjoyed the cultural and economic exchange. How have recent developments such as the introduction of visa-free travel, and the recent launch of direct flights between Kyiv and Delhi, affected these exchanges? Already, we are observing a significant growth in the number of visitors to Ukraine. In 2016, 19,500 Indian visitors were recorded. In 2017, the year that visas on arrival were introduced, the number of visitors reached 29,400. Now, with the arrival of direct flights, I would venture a guess that in 2018, Ukraine

www.kievcheckin.com

will receive close to 40,000 Indian visitors. And of course, the number of Ukrainian nationals visiting India will continue to rise, not just those seeking sun and sea, but many seeking to deepen their understanding of Yoga and Ayurveda. On top of this, there is a growing number of Indian students studying here. In fact, this is the largest body of foreign students studying here, and annually, Ukraine is earning nearly $55 million just by providing education to Indian nationals. But these students bring more than money, they have brought diversity to city life. Recently, I was in Kirovograd where

In Ukraine, yoga it is still in the early days of gaining popularity. What would be your advice to Ukrainians who wish to explore setting up Yoga studios in our country? I would always advise those interested in becoming yoga instructors to get a really strong understanding of the practice first, ideally in India. There's much more to yoga than simply following different exercises. You need to understand the philosophy and the deeper meaning of why you're doing what you're doing. Sure, there are a lot of "new" types of yoga – hot yoga, hanging yoga, you name it! – but if you can't understand the essence or the roots of the practice, you are only half-engaging. In India, there are a large number of ashrams where courses are offered. Different ashrams will provide you with different journeys, so you need to find the one that suits you best. If you can't go to India though, there are a lot of materials available online these days, and printed publications too. The Ukrainian Federation of Yoga has translated some key books into Ukrainian and these can be an invaluable source. But one book, or one website, will never be enough: even once you are a teacher, you should continue to learn and continue to grow.

there are about 800 Indian students. I met with the governor and mayor who expressed their joy that the city seems to have become an "international" city – Ukrainians are taking part in Holi and Diwali celebrations! And Ukrainians also have the opportunity to study in India. Every year, the Indian government offers 20 scholarships to Ukrainian professionals. The ITEC Scholarships (Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation Scholarships) allow professionals to attend shortterm training courses – from office management to electronic governance and diplomacy.

7

2017 saw a significant increase in trade between Ukraine and India. Which business sectors benefited the most from this gain? Very few people in Ukraine realise that bilateral trade between India and Ukraine in 2017 was as high as it was: $2.8 billion in fact. This makes India the ninth largest trading partner for Ukraine. Out of this, nearly $2.25 billion worth of goods were exported from Ukraine to India, making India the 5th latest export destination for Ukraine. On top of this, India is the second country with which Ukraine has a trade surplus - at a level of $1.65 billion. Last year, almost $1.9 billion dollars' worth of sunflower oil was exported to India. Then there were also agricultural products, chemicals, and engineering products such as pumps and compressors. In the future, I think that products such as solar panels will start to be exported too.

8

Where do you see interesting business opportunities between Ukraine and India? What resources are available for entrepreneurs from both countries who wish to explore them further? Today, there are so many business and investment opportunities available in India. The "Make In India" programme, for example, which was launched by

JUNE JULY 2018 the government in 2014, has resulted in India becoming a top destination globally for foreign direct investment. The Indian government's plan to develop 100 "smart cities" by 2030 also provides an opportunity for companies to be involved in the development of transport, housing, telecommunications, underpass development… there are so many things happening and I would encourage Ukrainian companies to go to India and to get involved! Of course, there's also huge scope for Indian companies to work here in Ukraine – I know of several that are already doing so, such as one which is manufacturing prosthetics – and I am always working to encourage investors to come here. Personally, I think there should be more Indian restaurants, so I'm inviting Indians to invest in this. The future is certainly bright for Ukrainian-Indian cooperation!

9

Speaking of Indian restaurants, what food would you recommend to a Ukrainian visiting India for the first time?! That's a tough one! India is such a large and diverse country, it means that it really depends on the region you are visiting. In some regions, it's very spicy. In others, it's less so. So I would suggest that you try whatever dishes are local to where you are staying, and to relish each and every one and start to appreciate the regional differences.

10

Do you have any advice for Ukrainians thinking of visiting India? Well, if you are looking for sun and sand, head to Goa or Kerala. Those who want to see "Modern India" and the world of Bollywood should go to Mumbai. If you want to see history, visit Delhi, Agra and Jaipur. If you want to go hiking or to see the mountains, concentrate on the north of India and experience the Himalayas. If you want to concentrate on spiritual growth, then visit areas such as Rishikesh, Varanasi, Haridwar, Puri and Cuttack. We have Ukrainian-language brochures in the embassy for all regions, and anyone is welcome to come and pick them up so they can start planning their visit! There are few things I would emphasize though. Firstly, don't drink the tap water – always buy it. You should also avoid eating cold food. India is such a populated country that you might find yourself surprised by the different way of life, but stick to these, and you will have a fantastic visit!

INDIA & UKRAINE Healing Secrets of Ayurveda

JUNE JULY 2018

Healing Secrets of Ayurveda In the modern era, when factors such as air pollution, stress and a sedentary lifestyle significantly influence people’s lives, more attention is being paid to ways of achieving good health and a high quality of life, as well as effective treatment methods. There are obvious disadvantages to modern medical practices, which often address only the symptoms of a problem rather than its roots, and treat illnesses with incredibly costly drugs that cause huge problems of their own with side effects and addiction. Taking that into account, many people are interested in pursuing non-traditional treatment methods. That’s why Ayurveda, one of the world's oldest holistic (“whole-body”) healing systems, has sparked interest around the world. Ukraine is no exception. Kiev Check-in decided to take a closer look at Ayurveda and investigate whether it’s a type of treatment to consider.

Healing Secrets of Ayurveda INDIA & UKRAINE

JUNE JULY 2018

Just like your grandparents in Ukraine might have their own traditional remedies to cure coughs and colds, Ayurveda is India's traditional medical system, which comes from centuries of practice. Unlike most traditional methods, though, Ayurveda was codified many centuries ago and has even been accepted by the World Health Organization as a system of medication. At the root of the practice is the understanding that nature has the unique ability to provide all that the body requires. If one is ill, it stems from a disequilibrium in the body's chemical composition — the deficient material can be sourced in nature and will, therefore, address the imbalance.” — H.E. Manoj K. Bharti, ambassador of India in Ukraine.

We addressed these questions to the ambassador of India in Ukraine and experts from Kyiv’s leading Ayurvedic centers. Here is what they shared with us. Alla Dmitrieva, Ukrainian Doctor of Medicine, the expert at the Kyiv center of Vedic medicine called Rasayana, commented:

Ayurveda emerged as a full-fledged health care system some three or four thousand years ago. It included a number of branches, such as ophthalmology, otolaryngology, podiatry and others. In ancient India, there was no alternative to Ayurveda as a health care system. Ayurvedic methods could cope with all known diseases of that time. For example, surgery, including methods of plastic reconstruction of the face and body, was known to Indian healers from the Sarasvati valley some 3,000 years BC.

Accurate diagnoses, nontoxic treatment and a wide variety of methods aimed at maintaining your health for decades — these Ayurveda advantages are mentioned by many. The main tool for defining an illness is, actually, the skill and experience of a doctor. He or she pays attention to the physical condition of a body and the state of a soul. A human pulse is, for instance, one of the most important sources of information.

A pulse wave tells everything about an innate body tympanum, the condition of all the organs and body tissues, nervous control and humoral regulation, adaptation ability and, most importantly, allows us to determine the real reason behind a disease’s development,

said Dmitrieva. And Ayurvedic treatment never focuses on the symptoms of particular diseases, but offers a comprehensive approach to health care.

According to Ayurveda, illness is a sign of imbalance existing on a spiritual, mental or physical level. Those who practice Ayurveda believe that each person is born with a unique mixture of three substances, or three doshas. They are Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Each dosha is a combination of the five basic elements, such as space, air, fire, water and earth. A healthy condition is a balance of all these elements. But if one of the doshas becomes stronger than needed, the suppressed doshas flare up, and this causes an illness. Thus, the doctor’s major task is to find out what the ideal dosha combination is for this particular person, and how to return his or her body and soul to a state of harmony. This healing system provides an individual approach to every patient, and that explains why the same disease can be treated differently in each particular case.

What is Ayurvedic treatment and what are its benefits? What are its pros and cons compared with traditional medicine? What severe modern illnesses can be cured by means of this ancient health care system?

A

yurveda dates to the time of the Vedas, the ancient holy books of the Aryans (“noble ones”). According to Indian myths, the knowledge of healing was given to mankind by Brahma himself. All four Vedas, written about 3,000 to 5,000 years ago, contain medical knowledge based upon the principles of Ayurveda. However, religion doesn’t play a key role in Ayurveda practices. The concept of balance is more important for this system of healing than religious dogmas.

According to Dmitrieva, the Ayurvedic system of treatment remains the most creative and flexible health-care system in the world. Present-day Ayurvedic doctors successfully adapt classical Indian herbal treatments and procedures to presentday needs. However, in the words of the ambassador,

It's true that Ayurvedic medicine is not of use in emergencies — it will not help you if you break your leg, for instance — but for all other instances, it should be the first stop.

JUNE JULY 2018

However, a doctor is not omnipotent and a patient himself should make efforts to recover and then maintain his health. The best reward in this case is good health, and quite often a new life to be brought to this world. Dmitrieva cited a recent example from her practice, when her patient, a woman suffering a complicated kidney disease, was able to give birth to a child. That would have been impossible without proper Ayurvedic treatment. She believes practicing Ayurveda is good for all ages, and there are special programs that assist would-be parents to prepare their physical condition and state of mind for pregnancy and childbirth. For those who are healthy, Ayurveda offers a variety of methods to clear their bodies of toxins that have accumulated for years. Panchakarma — the Ayurvedic process of purifying the body — is said to be the best way to do it. This 5,000-year-old practice relieves illness, if there is any, and promotes health. It also identifies the root cause of your health problem and balances the three doshas in the body. According to Viktor Matsyshyn, an experienced neurologist and ayurveda expert, founder of Ayurveda 192 center in Kyiv, panchakarma is the best way to detoxify the body and calm the soul.

As an orthodox physician, I would not recommend Ayurvedic treatment. It is not based on internationally accepted research methods and protocols. It uses substances that have sometimes been shown to contain toxic heavy metals such as lead and mercury. Its other danger is that it may deny the patient effective orthodox treatment. However, most patients have health beliefs — ideas of how they should

be treated — and if these ideas include a strong belief that Ayurvedic treatment may help them, then such an approach could be considered, Styles said.

As for the use of herbs in Ayurveda, this tradition is thousands of years old, Ayurvedic supporters say.

The Ayurvedic teaching is an ancient one, but a number of Western doctors are not yet familiar with its prescriptions. Ayurvedic medicines do not have medical constraints, if used properly. They are certified in the same way as traditional pharmaceuticals, said Dmitrieva.

said Matsyshyn.

Representatives of orthodox medicine often criticize Ayurveda for the lack of scientific evidence proving the effectiveness of its methods. They often call it a “traditional medicine” and treat it as a pseudo-science. We asked Dr. Richard Styles, the Medical Director of American Medical Centers in Kyiv, to comment.

With the flow of time a human body accumulates harmful metabolism products. They make you feel heavy, weak, and tired. The problem is that a human body often cannot drive them out in a natural way. The purifying methods of Panchakarma allow for cleaning these out of your body and bringing a human physiology back to its natural condition. Ayurveda also pays attention to the state of mind. Our body is managed by a brain, and cleaning it from any negative influence is another task for an Ayurvedic doctor. This balance of body and mind can be achieved through Transcendental Meditation, a technique promoting a state of relaxed awareness without being distracted by thoughts and emotions,

Interest in Ayurvedic healing methods is on the rise.

Manoj Bharti adds that

there are actually distinct advantages to developing Ayurvedic medicine in Ukraine — particularly because it is a much cheaper form of medical system than the Western system. The government spends huge sums of money on costly medicines from Europe and America, so for a country such as Ukraine, which is an emerging economy, the use of Ayurvedic medicines would see substantial savings! There is already one Ayurveda clinic here in Kyiv called Rasayana, which is doing a wonderful job, and I would like to see more clinics opening up. We are currently working on bringing some Ayurveda teachers from India to deliver lectures at universities and to help train practitioners. Ayurveda has successfully started to develop in countries such as Germany, Switzerland and Hungary — so why not here?”

www.kievcheckin.com

Ayurvedic doctors, in turn, always treat their “orthodox” colleagues as equal partners. The European and Indian health care systems may successfully interact, believes Yulia Pitenko, the governing partner of the Ayurveda 192 clinic network.

An Ayurvedic doctor sees the arising imbalance of body functions, while present-day medicine focuses on treating already existing diseases. in addition, modern methods of first aid are indispensable in urgent cases when there is an immediate threat to life. Ayurveda, in its turn, focuses mostly on health restoration and re-creation methods. Its re-creation program is the world fastest developing system of alternative medicine. Its efficiency was confirmed by more than 600 scientific investigations conducted in 220 medical institutes from 27 countries, said Yulia Pitenko.

In the late 20th century the World Health Organization recognized Ayurveda as the most promising health care system to push the development of medical science in the 21st century. However, there is still no single coordinating, educational and health center to guide the global development of Ayurvedic teaching. Unfortunately, most of the Ukrainian Ayurvedic centers practice SPA and wellness procedures without proper diagnosis. But this is only a small part of the Ayurveda healing methods,” said Dmitrieva.

And unlike our ancestors, we no longer need to travel as far as India to enjoy these fantastic healing methods. A number of experienced Ayurvedic experts can be found right in Kyiv.

It’s possible to check out the catacombs of the Cathedral of the Jesuits, the Church of Transfiguration (the largest in the city), the Dominican Cathedral and underground parts of the Lviv Pharmacy Museum. Some of these underground sites may be visited only on a tour, so if you are interested, don't forget to book one in advance. There you can see the royal chambers and the precious exhibits of the Lviv History Museum and take a break surrounded by Italian atmosphere. According to the citizen survey, if the topic is places to enjoy the best coffee in Lviv, we should mention not just Lviv Coffee Mining Manufacture and Lviv Handmade Chocolate, both popular with tourists, but also resident favorites Svit Kavy, Medelin and Lviv Coffee Manufacture. All have a wide selection of quality coffee and a cozy atmosphere.

Explore the mysterious side of the city

On your way from the city centre to the High Castle you can find a mystic place called the “yard of lost toys.” It’s a simple residential building with a yard full of old toys and mirrors. This is not a typical attraction, though lots of visitors try to find it. Nobody knows for sure the history of this somewhat creepy spot, but there are different stories. You can ask locals to tell you their versions. www.kievcheckin.com

The Les Kurbas Theatre is the most popular one in Lviv, featuring an extraordinary repertoire and professional improvisational acting that you'll enjoy even if you don’t understand the language. Don’t forget to buy tickets in advance — normally they are sold out even a week before a good performance (en.kurbas.lviv.ua). The Solomiya Krushelnytska Lviv State Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet is one of the most beautiful theatres in Europe. It was designed by Zygmunt Gorgolewski and built in just three years. The famous theater’s exterior is readily recognized even by Ukrainians who haven’t been to Lviv yet. But going inside to enjoy the breathtaking interior and one of the performances here is definitely worth it! Check here for tickets: opera.lviv.ua. For those who really want to experience the city, we suggest trying out some cultural events or parties. BUSINESS Permanent Residence in Ukraine through Investment

JUNE JULY 2018

A Dream Come True:

PERMANENT RESIDENCE IN UKRAINE through Investment

Are you one of those people who came to Ukraine and, right from the start, fell in love with the country? Or are you thinking of relocating to Ukraine and ready to invest here? Here’s a quick guide to how you can obtain a permanent residence permit through investment in Ukraine. Foreigners who want to live in Ukraine indefinitely and are prepared to invest USD $100,000 or more in the Ukrainian economy are eligible to apply for a permanent residence permit (PRP). The key benefits of the PRP are as follows: • right to reside in Ukraine for an unlimited period; • right to work with no need to obtain a work permit; • right to do business in Ukraine as a private entrepreneur with very favourable taxation rules via the Simplified Tax Scheme (unified tax is up to 5% from receivables), which can lead to considerable tax savings for foreigners from “high tax” countries; • can simplify the process for obtaining visas to EU countries (for citizens who need such visas). Similar to investment-based permanent residence schemes in many other countries, such as the USA, Canada, and Singapore, Ukraine offers permanent residence to foreign investors subject to the following conditions: 1. investment is made in a foreign convertible currency; 2. the amount of investment is not less than USD $100,000; 3. payment for the investment was made in accordance with Ukrainian investment and banking law; 4. the funds are invested into the Ukrainian economy. Note: not all types of investments are considered eligible for this scheme. Simply buying a property in Ukraine for

48 Kiev Check-In

the required amount does not allow a foreign national to get an immigration permit (and, as result, the PRP). In practice, the laws require injecting funds into the share capital of a company registered in Ukraine, or joint investment activity in the territory of Ukraine. After the company with foreign capital is duly registered in Ukraine, it can perform any type of business activity not prohibited by Ukrainian law and indicated in the statutory documents of the company (including investment activity, trade, services, export/import business activity, etc.). The share capital of the company can be used for buying property (including real estate, other assets or commodities) as well as for current operations of the company. Therefore, if, for example, you wish to buy real estate in Ukraine and reside in Ukraine permanently, you can set up a company in Ukraine, inject the respective amount of share capital (not less than equivalent of USD $100,000) and buy property in the name of the legal entity. After the required investment has been made, the foreign national can apply for an immigration permit, and following that a permanent residence permit.

Step-by-Step Procedure:

Step 1 — Setting up a Company in Ukraine

In most cases, LLC is the most suitable business structure in Ukraine, as it is simple to register and maintain. The registration process takes only one working

TETIANA YAKOVENKO Director of ContactUkraine LLC www.contactukraine.com day. Before registering the company the foreign national must: • obtain a Ukrainian tax ID, which will take three working days; • fill in an application form, and draft and sign the company’s charter and minutes of incorporation. Because all the documents need to be in the Ukrainian language and because of the complexity of Ukrainian regulations and registration processes, it is highly advisable to engage the services of a professional legal adviser to complete the above steps.

Step 2 — Injection of Share Capital

Once the company is registered, you as the company shareholder will need to inject share capital in the amount of no less than USD $100,000 or the equivalent. You can send funds to the corporate bank account of your company either directly from your overseas account OR by opening an investment bank account with one of Ukrainian banks, transfering funds to this investment bank account from overseas, and then transfering funds from the investment bank account to the corporate bank account of your company. After the investment has been made, you need to get a certificate from the bank confirming your investment.

Step 3 — Application for Immigration Permit

Once the investment has been made, a foreigner can file an application to the State Migration Service of Ukraine (if the foreigner is present in Ukraine) or a Ukrainian Embassy in the foreigner’s country of residence of a foreigner (if the foreigner is overseas at the time of application). www.kievcheckin.com

JUNE JULY 2018 Along with the application, you will need to file the following documents: 1. passport and its notarized translation into Ukrainian; 2. 8 matte photos 3.5 by 4.5 cm; 3. certificate from the bank confirming your investment; 4. charter of the Ukrainian company and extract confirming registration of the company; 5. a document confirming your address (can be a driver’s license, utility bill etc.); 6. A “no criminal record” certificate with an apostille; 7. information about your close relatives (a marriage certificate if you are married); 8. medical certificate confirming a person is not addicted to illegal drugs, opioids, or alcohol, and has no infectious diseases as listed in law. The timeline for obtaining an immigration permit is up to one year as defined by law (although, in practice, it can be done within approximately six months).

Step 4 — Application for Visa “D”

After obtaining an immigration permit, a foreign individual who is present in another country has to obtain a visa type “D” at a Ukrainian embassy or

www.kievcheckin.com

Permanent Residence in Ukraine through Investment BUSINESS consulate before arriving in Ukraine. The foreigner must apply for a permanent residence permit within five working days upon arrival to Ukraine. If the foreign national is in Ukraine already, the visa “D” is not required, and this step can be skipped.

Step 5 — Application for a Permanent Residence Permit

The Permanent Residence permit will be issued based on the immigration permit within one week upon application to the State Migration Service of Ukraine. As the procedure for obtaining permanent residency in Ukraine takes time, if you wish to relocate to Ukraine earlier, you can get a temporary residence permit (issued for up to three years and renewable). For that, the Ukrainian company founded by you can employ you as a director and get a work permit for you, which is legal grounds to obtain the temporary residence permit. Alternatively, if the investment is made for an amount of no less than EUR 100,000, a temporary residence permit can be issued without employment in Ukraine.

How Can You Use the Share Capital Funds of your company in Ukraine? Once your company is registered in Ukraine and you have injected share capital, you are free to use these funds for various needs: 1. To finance the company’s business activity, paying salaries of employees, etc. 2. You can buy a property in the company’s name (in this case, the legal entity will be registered as the owner of the real estate). After you get the PRP, you can liquidate your company and register title for the real estate in your name as an individual. 3. Once you get PRP, you can liquidate your company and transfer the funds to your own bank account in Ukraine. Summing up, foreign nationals are allowed to get Ukrainian permanent residency through an investment in the economy of Ukraine for not less than USD $100,000 or its equivalent. To complete all the steps properly for obtaining Ukrainian permanent residency, it is highly advisable to hire a local professional consultant to advise and assist you with the application process.
