My achievement has to do with my taking part in the school choir. When we went to Italy we were going to sing in front of judges. I was very anxious! When the time came, I did my best, focused on my aim and got over my fear. I made it! And with my peers’ help, we managed to have a very good result. We won! AGGELIKI

When I was little and my sister was still a baby in her pram, I saw an old lady and told my mom: “Mom, why don’t you help the old lady throw away her garbage?” Then my mom helped her while I looked after my baby sister. ATHENA

One summer day, I was with my friend. We were playing with my ball. Suddenly, a bad man came, took the ball and went away. I knew where he was hiding, so I grabbed a handful of soil and threw it at him. He left the ball and ran away. He didn’t bother us again. ALEXANDROS VAFIADIS

One afternoon I was playing in the yard with my friends. A little girl, Danae, was on a mantel and jumped up and down. Her mom told her to stop, but she wouldn’t. Then she tripped and almost fell, but I grabbed her and she didn’t hit herself. Everyone in the yard shouted “Bravo!” ΑΝΝΑ

Once in a small alley I saw a dog with a swollen liver and broken legs. As soon as I went home, I told my mom. She called the vets and they came and picked up the dog. They took it to a safe place. YIANNIS SOUBOUROS

My biggest achievement was when I got injured during a judo competition and still I managed to win a higher category. KONSTANTINOS DESPOTIS

Three years ago in summer, my parents, my brother and I went on vacation to Zakinthos. We rented a boat and went to explore caves. We entered a cave with deep, black waters. It was big and dark, and the bottom was full of strange fish and green seaweed. My mom dove with determination. I was trying to find the courage to follow her. I stood on the boat, wondering if I would make it. Getting over my fear, I took a deep breath and dove in the cold water. The experience was so intense, that I will remember it forever THEODORA BINIOU

My biggest achievement was when I was 7. This was when I finally managed to swim in the sea and this helped me do a lot of other things. For the first time I was so happy I could swim because I was no longer afraid of playing with the ball or diving far in the water. Now I can do what I wanted to: swim. MARIA KARAYANNIDOU

Last Christmas, my family and I went to the Elves’ Mill. It was wonderful there. There were candy houses, Santa’s home, clowns, stick walkers, trees decorated with colorful ornaments and lights, the Manger, an ice skating rink and other things. The landscape was snowy and it was very beautiful. We wandered around for a while, and then my sister had a great idea: “Let’s go for ice-skating!” Then she and I tried to persuade our parents and in the end we made it. As we were approaching the rink, I was very happy, but I was also anxious because it was the first time we would to this. When I stepped on the ice, I slipped right away, but I held on and didn’t fall. Soon I got used to it and went on without holding the rail. It was my first time and I managed not to fall! KATERINA PATERA

One of the achievements I’ve told my friends about was when I was learning to ride my bike. When I was very little I rode my bike with extra wheels. Later, my dad removed them but when I tried to ride without help for the first time I fell off. That happened for a long time until I was black and blue. I had hit myself over then times! One

afternoon, my dad told me to try again, in case I’d make it this time. I got on my bike but I didn’t fall this time because my dad was holding me. I started to pedal. Suddenly he left the handlebar and told me to hold it. Then he left the saddle and, without realizing it, I could ride on my own! Since then I ride my bike as often as I want. DEMETRA MANDALIDOU

My biggest achievement is trying to do well in school. My mom tells me to try as much as I can and that’s what I do. I try even harder. Sometimes my grandma also helps me with math. My parents always tell me to always feel well with who I am and everything will always be great. YIORGOS MIGDANIS

Hey children! Listen what happened to me yesterday. I was going home after my English lesson and heard a woman shouting form the elevator. I recognized the voice of Ms. Anna, who lives on the fourth floor. I ran to see what was going on. I asked her and she told me to get some help because she was trapped inside the elevator. I ran home, told my mom and we called the fir police. They told me they would be there in 7 minutes. Then I went to reassure Ms Anna. Soon I heard the sirens of the fire police approaching. Two fire policemen got off the vehicle and headed to the stairway. Soon Ms Anna was out. When she saw me, she called me a “small hero, because she was now out because of me. STEVEN

These passages were written by 4th grade children, apropos a chapter of the book Runaways by Kristin Butcher, in which a 12-year-old child narrates his achievement to his friends. This book was read during reading circles, school year 2013-2014 December 2013 Julie Kafetzi
