COLUMBUS CREW vs HOUSTON DYNAMO COLUMBUS CREW STADIUM, Columbus, Ohio April 21, 2012 (WEEK 7, MLS Game #57) 7:30 p.m. ET (FS-OH; KPRC-2) The next stop on the Houston Dynamo’s season-opening road show is Crew Stadium, where they meet the Columbus Crew in an Eastern Conference encounter. The Crew are coming off back-to-back losses, last a 1-0 defeat by Philadelphia Union at PPL Park. The Crew have won three of the last six meetings, with three draws.  The Crew had a three-game winning streak vs. Houston at Crew Stadium before the clubs played to a 2-2 draw in the second meeting a year ago.  The Crew’s win at Robertson Stadium last year was their first ever. The teams had played to draws in four of the first five encounters there; the Dynamo won 2-0 on Aug. 2, 2008.  Coaches record: Robert Warzycha vs. HOU: P6 W3 L0 D3 … Dominic Kinnear vs. CLB: P16 W4 L6 D6 COLUMBUS CREW The Columbus Crew lost for the second time in as many games, going to a 1-0 defeat by Philadelphia Union on Saturday afternoon at PPL Park. The Crew sit in a tie for fifth place in the Eastern Conference with 6 points from 5 games. LAST MATCH  The game's only goal came in the 38th minute. A shot from Philadelphia's Freddy Adu hit the hand of the Crew’s Eric Gehrig, and referee Michael Kennedy pointed to the spot. Gabriel Gómez then finished off the penalty kick.  Union goalkeeper Zac MacMath was called upon to make just one save on the afternoon behind a makeshift Union defense.  Crew head coach Robert Warzycha made two changes to the team that fell to a 4-1 defeat by the New York Red Bulls at Crew Stadium. Ethan Finlay came into the midfield for Bernardo Anor, and Aaron Schoenfeld started up top in place of Emilio Renteria.  COLUMBUS CREW (4-1-3-2): Andy Gruenebaum - Sebastian Miranda, Chad Marshall, Eric Gehrig, Shaun Francis (Nemanja Vukovic 73) - Kirk Urso - Eddie Gaven, Milovan Mirosevic, Ethan Finlay (Bernardo Anor 65) Aaron Schoenfeld (Emilio Renteria 68), Olman Vargas. The Crew suffered their second consecutive loss, and were shut out for the first time since the season-opening 2-0 loss at Colorado. “Whether they’re rookies or veterans on the team we have to match the intensity, especially away from home, and we did today,” head coach Robert Warzycha said. “I was pleased by that. You can always question the quality because sometimes you can have a better pass, you can have a better finish, but compared to the game against New York at home we were much better.” Rookie Aaron Schoenfeld was given his first MLS start, starting in place of Emilio Rentería. Schoenfeld had come on as a substitute in the last three matches. “Emilio is a good forward but the last few games he had no goals,” Warzycha said. “Maybe somebody else can get lucky and score goals.” Said Schoenfeld: “We definitely had chances. I had chances. If I put one away early maybe a couple of other chances would have gone in.” Rookie Ethan Finlay also made his first MLS start, coming into a wide midfield position in place of Bernardo Anor. Finlay had come on as a substitute in each of the first four games. “We weren’t very good,” Warzycha said. “I can’t remember too many good crosses from the sides. I’m not really happy with our flank.” Said goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum: “At times we were a little too direct. We need to sometimes just settle down and try to pick them apart.” Warzycha was expecting to make a change in central defense, but Danny O’Rourke was not deemed to have recovered from an ankle injury and Eric Gehrig maintained his place in the team. “It’s unbelievable that we have so many injuries at that one position,” Warzycha said. “We’d probably be much better if we had everybody healthy. We’d be going game-to-game with guys that really have some experience but unfortunately for us we have injuries.” The Crew learned goalkeeper William Hesmer will likely be out for the season after undergoing hip surgery last week. Hesmer has been the first-choice ‘keeper for the Crew for six seasons, the second-longest stretch with a single club among active MLS goalkeepers (behind New England’s Matt Reis). “It’s not easy for the guys in the back because every game is somebody different and trying to find the best fit,” Warzycha said. “Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn’t. It worked against Toronto [in a 1-0 win]. It didn’t against New York [in a 4-1 loss]. What can we do?”

HOUSTON DYNAMO The Houston Dynamo returned to action following a two-week layoff with a 1-1 draw with the Chicago Fire in a match shortened to 65 minutes because of inclement weather on Sunday evening at Toyota Park. The Dynamo are in fourth place in the Eastern Conference with 7 points from 4 games. LAST MATCH  The match was stopped for the first time in the 13th minute by referee Geoff Gamble because of a bolt of lightning and the peal of thunder. The game was halted for 70 minutes before it resumed.  In the 24th minute, the Dynamo broke through. Brian Ching peeled off the backline and sprung Will Bruin on a through ball that split the Fire center backs, and the second-year striker coolly beat Fire goalkeeper Sean Johnson inside the right-hand post.  Just three minutes later, the Fire found an equalizer. After Patrick Nyarko was taken down at the top of the box, a Pavel Pardo direct kick deflected off of the back of Logan Pause, curled over goalkeeper Tally Hall, hit the underside of the crossbar and down over the line.  After 20 minutes in the second half, which included no shots on target, another bolt of lightning was sighted and Gamble pulled the players off the field for a final time. Under MLS rules, a match abandoned after the second half has kicked off is considered official.  Dynamo head coach Dominic Kinnear made three changes to the team that suffered a 2-0 loss to Seattle Sounders FC at CenturyLink Field. Jermaine Taylor, Nathan Sturgis and Luiz Camargo came into the team, for the injured Brad Davis and the suspended Colin Clark and Adam Moffat.  HOUSTON DYNAMO (4-4-2): Tally Hall - Andre Hainault, Geoff Cameron, Bobby Boswell, Jermaine Taylor Je-Vaughn Watson, Nathan Sturgis, Luiz Camargo (Calen Carr 63), Corey Ashe - Will Bruin, Brian Ching. TEAM NEWS  The Fire-Dynamo game was the first since the 2000 season that was ended before the completion of 90 minutes and ruled an official game. The DC-KC game June 10, 2000 was stopped at halftime with the game scoreless, a result that stood.  “I thought the team was playing its best soccer when the second lightning delay happened, so it was unfortunate that’s when we started feeling our best,” said goalkeeper Tally Hall. “When Calen [Carr] came in and within a couple minutes he was very dangerous. We were on our front foot, game stops and so be it.”  With three first-choice midfielders out through injury and suspension, Kinnear opted to start Luiz Camargo and Nathan Sturgis in the center of the park, and moved Corey Ashe forward to the left of midfield.  Jermaine Taylor went back to left back, and Je-Vaughn Watson shifted out to the right of midfield.

“There was a lot of movement in the back and in the midfield, but the back four was pretty strong with Jermaine adding to the backline like he has before,” Dynamo head coach Dominic Kinnear said. “Overall I was pretty happy with the way we went about it.” A year ago, it took the Dynamo 11 games to reach the seven-point mark on the road. The best record with an extended road trip to open an MLS season is within view. The Columbus Crew took 11 points from their season-opening seven-game road trip to start 1999; the Chicago Fire took 10 points from 10 games in 2006. “Coming away with a result is a good thing, especially on the road and it’s another point for us,” Brian Ching said. “I always point to our record on the road last year and think we’re off to a great start this year.” Second-year striker Will Bruin collected his first goal of the season in Houston’s 1-1 draw in Chicago. The Dynamo’s first two goals this season were scored by a defender (André Hainault) and midfielder (Brad Davis). “The longer you go without getting goals the more frustrated you become in yourself and the harder it gets,” said Ching. “I think it’s extremely important for a striker to get that first one. I was extremely happy for him. You could tell with the look on his face how much it meant.” Brad Davis has not yet returned to full training and has been ruled out of this weekend’s match. “We were told it is going to be two or three weeks and that’s what we’re looking at,” Davis said. “I was able to push the workload a little bit more [Tuesday] but it’s one of those things where you’re walking a fine line with what you can do. I’m going to come back as soon as I can. [This weekend’s] possible but if I’m not available for this weekend I’m very confident I’ll be ready for the D.C. [United] game [on April 28].”

TODAY’S MATCH The Columbus Crew returns home tonight to host Eastern Conference rival Houston Dynamo at Crew Stadium. It is “Dollar Night” at the stadium as the ever-popular Bob Evans’ Buck-a-Brat returns as well as Dollar Draft night. All Fans will be able to enjoy juicy, full-size Bob Evans Bratwursts for just $1 throughout the game and those of legal drinking age will be able to enjoy Bud and Bud Light on draft for $1 at different locations throughout the stadium. This is the first of two meetings between the clubs as the Crew (2-3-0, 6 Pts.) looks to regain footing and bounce back from the recent setbacks against New York (4-1 loss on April 7) and in Philadelphia (1-0 loss on April 14). The Black & Gold holds the all-time advantage against the Dynamo with a 4-2-6 record, highlighted by last year’s historic first win in Houston (2-0, June 18) in which then rookie midfielder Bernardo Anor tallied a goal and an assist earning MLS Player of the Week honors. The Black & Gold added another point on Sept. 14 when the Dynamo visited Crew Stadium in a 2-2 draw. The Houston Dynamo (2-1-1, 7 pts.) enters the match on the heels of a 1-1 draw at Chicago last Sunday, April 15. They are in the midst of a seven-game road trip to start the season as they prepare to open their brand new BBVA Compass Stadium on May 12 against D.C. United. After opening with back-to-back 1-0 wins at Chivas USA on March 11 and San Jose on March 17, Houston suffered a 2-0 loss in Seattle on March 23 and drew Chicago. The Dynamo may be without 2011 assist leader and MLS MVP runner-up Brad Davis after he suffered a calf strain in training on April 7. Former Crew midfielder Adam Moffat will be available for selection as well as Dynamo stalwart Brian Ching. Houston coach Dominic Kinnear will also be able to rely on the fire power of second-year forward Will Bruin and Calen Carr. Next, the Crew continues its homestand on April 28 as it hosts the Vancouver Whitecaps at 7:30 p.m. at Crew Stadium. BLACK & GOLD CONTINUES ITS RUN AT MLS RESERVE LEAGUE TILE WITH 4-0 WIN AT PPL The Columbus Crew strengthened its lead atop the East Division of the MLS Reserve League with a 4-0 win over the Philadelphia Union at PPL Park on Saturday night (April 14). Crew forward Emilio Renteria tallied a hat-trick and an assist, while Cole Grossman added a fourth goal before halftime. The Crew is now 3-1-0 with nine points in Reserve League Eastern Division play and returns to the field on Sunday, June 10 as it hosts the New England Revolution at Crew Stadium at 10 a.m. OLMAN VARGAS CELEBRATES FIRST INTERNATIONAL CAP WITH GOAL Crew forward Olman Vargas had been summoned by the Costa Rica National Team for its friendly against Honduras on Wednesday, April 11. Vargas started the match and proceeded to score the game-tieing goal in the 1-1 draw just before halftime. APPEARANCE BY SWANSON, 14, HIGHLIGHTS CSA PRODUCTS SHINING IN RESERVE LEAGUE MATCHES Several Crew Soccer Academy players have been called in to play in the Crew’s recent MLS Reserve League matches. Three games into the Reserve League campaign, defender Alex Crognale, midfielders Omar Mohamed, Rhodes Moore and Ben Swanson, and forward Brett Elder have all seen action to date. Moore, who will be attending Xavier in the fall, leads the CSA products in minutes played, having appeared in all three matches with a total of 144 minutes. At just 14 years of age, Swanson became the youngest player to ever appear in a reserve match for the Crew, coming off the bench in the 89th minute of Saturday’s (April 7) win over New York. Per MLS Reserve League rules, each club may use up to five academy players per Reserve League game. Academy players must appear in each club’s Homegrown Protected list that is submitted to the League Office.

CREW TO FACE OHIO STATE IN 11TH ANNUAL CONNOR SENN MEMORIAL MATCH ON MAY 1 The Crew and Ohio State Buckeyes will once again meet on the field Tuesday, May 1, in the 11th annual Connor Senn Memorial Match, which raises awareness for sudden cardiac arrests in athletes. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium on the campus of Ohio State. Tickets for the event are $5 for adults and $3 for children and can be purchased online at OhioStateBuckeyes.com and at the Crew Stadium Box Office, all central Ohio Ticketmaster retail locations and via Ticketmaster phone at 1-800-745-3000. Proceeds will benefit the Dorothy M. Davis Heart & Lung Research Institute. In addition to the exhibition match, the event features a silent auction that consists of a wide array of Ohio State and Columbus Crew memorabilia, including autographed items, as well donations from a variety of Columbus businesses and organizations. Senn collapsed during Ohio State’s match at Akron Sept. 26, 2001, and died that night from a congenital heart defect. A native of Granville, Ohio, Connor was a freshman walk-on defender who had earned a starting position for the 2001 season. A plaque honoring Connor hangs outside the Buckeyes’ locker room door and Connor’s chair hangs in the locker room, which all the players on the 2001 team signed with personal messages to Connor, who was known for his tremendous work ethic, positive attitude and selfless play. The following week, on May 8, Crew President & General Manager Mark McCullers and defender Danny O’Rourke, a childhood friend of Connor’s, will speak at The Connor Senn Memorial Symposium on Sudden Cardiac Arrest, a new program devoted to the topic of sudden cardiac death, educating the medical community and the general public on the scope of the problem, sharing the latest advancements in diagnostic imaging and testing and promoting proper training in the interpretation of young adult electrocardiograms. The symposium will take place from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Ohio Union (1739 N. High St.) and there is no fee for members of the community to attend. CSA STANDOUT WIL TRAPP SHINES IN U.S UNDER-20 NATIONAL TEAM CAMP University of Akron midfielder and Crew Soccer Academy product Wil Trapp returned home after participating in the U.S. Under-20 National Team camp held in Portland, Ore., April 9-16. The team trained for a week before edging the University of Washington 1-0. Trapp started the match playing 83 minutes and according to Crew technical director Brian Bliss, who serves as an assistant coach on the U20s, he was one of the top guys throughout the camp. DYNAMO VS. COLUMBUS CREW - HOUSTON ATTEMPTS TO REVERSE FORM AGAINST CREW The Houston Dynamo and Columbus Crew duel at Crew Stadium on Saturday night as the Dynamo continue their seven‐game road trip to begin the 2012 season. Houston has struggled against Columbus since 2009, with a six‐game winless streak (0‐3‐3) since they last defeated the Crew in 2008. The meeting with Columbus marks the second of five consecutive games against Eastern Conference opponents for Houston. The Dynamo ended a 22‐ day layoff with a 1‐1 weather‐shortened draw in Chicago on Sunday. The match included two lightning‐related delays before it was ultimately abandoned in the 66th minute. Houston seized a 1‐0 lead in the 24th minute on a nice sequence between the forward pair of Will Bruin and Brian Ching. Bruin capped the play with his first goal since Sept. 17, 2011. The assist was also Ching’s 25th for the Dynamo in all competitions. The Dynamo were unlucky four minutes later, as a free kick from Chicago’s Pavel Pardo deflected off the upper back of Logan Pause and deflected past an off‐balance Tally Hall for the equalizer. Houston vs. Columbus: The Dynamo have had a tough time against the Crew in their first six years, compiling a 2‐4‐6 record in 12 meetings. Houston is winless in its last six meetings (0‐3‐3) with Columbus since it defeated the Crew 2‐0 on Aug. 2, 2008 at Robertson Stadium. In 2011, the Dynamo lost to Columbus 2‐0 at home on June 18, as Andres Mendoza scored minutes before halftime before Bernardo Anor, who assisted on Mendoza’s goal, tallied his own in the second half after Lovel Palmer was ejected. Sept. 14 at Crew Stadium, Je‐Vaughn Watson put Houston ahead in the 34th minute before a pair of second half penalty kicks from Mendoza gave Columbus a 2‐1 lead. Calen Carr equalized in the 86th minute for a 2‐2 draw after the Crew played the final 79 minutes with ten men following a red card to Emmanuel Ekpo.

DYNAMO NOTES  Moffat Back: MF Adam Moffat was suspended for the match against the Fire and will return against the Crew. MF Brad Davis was listed as “Out” on Tuesday’s injury report due to a left calf strain and is doubtful for Saturday’s match.  With Davis missing the game against Chicago, he broke a streak of 45 consecutive regular season games started. The last time Davis did not start a regular season game was 8/28/10 at Colorado. Tally Hall now leads the Houston with 38 consecutive regular season starts.

 Reserves: The Dynamo Reserves conceded their first goal of the season and lost their first game, 1‐0, against the Chicago Fire Reserves on Monday morning at Toyota Park. A seventh‐minute goal from Uruguayan forward Federico Puppo sealed the victory for the home team. The goal was set up after Adam Moffat’s clearance was knocked down by the outstretched arm of Puppo. With no whistle, Puppo played on and finished past Deric to put the Fire up 1‐0. The match was played in gusting winds of up to 40 mph. With the loss, the Dynamo Reserves fall to 3‐1‐0 on the year.  Run of Play Perfection: The Dynamo have not conceded a goal in the run of play this season. All three goals allowed have come off set pieces (corner kick and penalty vs. Seattle and free kick vs. Chicago).  Possession: Despite playing their first four games on the road, the Dynamo have won the possession battle in three of four games on the season. Houston had a 53‐47% advantage vs. Chivas USA, a narrow disadvantage (52‐48%) at San Jose, 56% possession vs. San Jose and 55% at Chicago Fire.  Onside: The Dynamo have not been called offside in either of their last two games. In its first two games, Houston was called offside six times.  Good Form: The Dynamo are (6‐1‐3) in their last nine regular season games. Before the loss at Seattle on March 23, Houston’s last regular season defeat was a 2‐0 setback at Sporting Kansas City on Sept. 10, 2011.  First Road Win of 2012: Houston’s 1‐0 win over Chivas USA erased bad memories of the 2011 road schedule. Amazingly, it took Houston 16 games to record its first road win of the 2011 campaign. After a 0‐ 6‐9 start, the Dynamo defeated FC Dallas 1‐0 at Pizza Hut Park on September 24 on Geoff Cameron’s goal in the 87th minute. The win started a road‐roll for the Dynamo, which won its final two road regular season games (at Dallas and at Portland) before winning two road playoff games (at Philadelphia and at Sporting KC). That stretch included a 7‐1 record against Western Conference teams. Houston went 9‐6‐4 in 2011 against its former conference.  Well‐traveled Jamaicans: Midfielder Je‐Vaughn Watson and defender Jermaine Taylor had a chance to settle in for the three‐week break after plenty of time in the air. The Jamaican internationals played three games in seven days in three different locations in March, including 3/17 at San Jose, 3/21 vs. Costa Rica in Kingston, Jamaica and 3/23 in Seattle. The pair also played in two friendlies for Jamaica in February while the Dynamo participated in the Disney Pro Soccer Classic in Orlando.  Dynamo sign Oscar Recio: The Dynamo signed Mexican defender Oscar Recio on loan from Mexican first division club C.F. Monterrey on April 13. Recio joined the Dynamo at the beginning of preseason and has seen significant minutes in both preseason and reserve matches. The left back has played all 270 minutes of reserve league action in 2012 and has helped anchor a defense that has posted three shutouts in three matches. Before joining the Dynamo, the 22‐year‐old defender spent time with CF Monterrey, Merida FC, Atlante FC and most recently Club de Fútbol Indios.

 First: Houston recorded its first opening day win on the road on March 11 at Chivas USA. It was also the Dynamo’s first season‐opening win since 2006 (home or road).  Clutch: Hainault’s game‐winner two minutes into stoppage time at Chivas USA continued a run of late goals for Houston in 2011. Last year, the Dynamo scored 14 goals in the final 15 minutes of games, second best in MLS (Seattle).  Late Winners: Hainault’s goal at Chivas USA was the first Dynamo goal in extra time since Alex Dixon scored a dramatic stoppage‐time goal to give Houston a 3‐2 win over Real Salt Lake at Robertson Stadium on Aug. 20, 2011. Three days earlier, Bobby Boswell earned a 1‐1 tie at New England with a 90th‐minute equalizer.  Sarkodie’s U‐23 Time: Dynamo defender Kofi Sarkodie started in two of three games for the U.S. U‐23 team in the CONCACAF Men’s Olympic Qualifying tournament. Sarkodie played 90 minutes vs. Cuba and El Salvador.  Offseason additions: The Dynamo’s offseason consisted mostly of moves to add depth to a core of returning starters. Houston acquired three players via draft (F‐Colin Rolfe, D‐Warren Creavalle and M‐Brian Ownby), three via trade (D/M‐Nathan Sturgis, F‐Macoumba Kandji and F‐Brian Ching), and two trialist signing (GK‐Erich Marscheider, D‐Oscar Recio).  Preseason: Forward Will Bruin led the Dynamo offense in the preseason with four goals, including the club’s lone goal in four matches in the Disney Pro Soccer Classic in Orlando, a header goal versus Montreal. Brian Ownby (3) Colin Clark (2), Colin Rolfe (2) Nathan Sturgis (2) rounded out the Dynamo scoring leaders.  With construction continuing at BBVA Compass Stadium, the Dynamo’s new downtown facility, the club is forced to begin its season with seven games on the road. After road games with Chivas USA, San Jose, Seattle, Chicago, Columbus, DC United and New York, Houston opens its new stadium against DC United on May 12.  Nearly six years after the club’s first‐ever match on April 2, 2006, only two players remain on the Dynamo roster: Brian Ching and Brad Davis. Defender Eddie Robinson retired in January and joined the front office as an assistant coach with the Youth Academy and a color analyst on TV broadcasts.

UP NEXT: TWO MORE ON ROAD IN EAST BEFORE FIRST MATCH IN DOWNTOWN HOUSTON Houston will continue its franchise‐record seven‐game road trip with more Eastern Conference competition. After Columbus, the Dynamo will make trips to D.C. United (4/28) and New York (5/9) before the May 12 opening of BBVA Compass Stadium in downtown Houston.
