November–December 2014

A Note from Pam I hope you have had the opportunity to meet our intern, Elyse Warren, a graduate student in the Experiential Education and Jewish Cultural Arts joint master’s program at George Washington University. She is interning in the Adult Services Department for the Adult Learning Institute (ALI) through December. She has been sitting in on various adult education and fitness classes here at the J in order to get to know the participants; and will be designing and teaching a class for ALI in the near future. See page 6 for details. The Adult Services Department will hold its annual Used Book Sale Sunday–Wednesday, March 8–11, 2015. Please help us make this fundraising event a success by donating your gently used adult and children’s books. See details on page 4. As you read The Voice, please take note of the businesses that advertise in the newsletter, and consider patronizing them when you have a need for such services. Their support contributes to our ability to produce this publication. I wish you and your family a happy, healthy and peaceful 2015.

“As the surviving flag-raisers reluctantly play their public roles as ‘the heroes of Iwo Jima’ during an exhausting (but clearly necessary) wartime bond rally tour, Flags of Our Fathers evolves into a pointed study of battlefield valor and misplaced idolatry, incorporating subtle comment on the bogus nature of celebrity, the trauma of battle, and the true meaning of heroism in wartime. . . . richly satisfying, impeccably crafted film that manages to be genuinely patriotic (in celebrating the camaraderie of soldiers in battle) while dramatizing the ultimate futility of war....” – Jeff Shannon on Amazon.com Coffee, tea, and dessert provided. “Chailights”

Israel: Prospects for Peace Developments involving Israel and its regional neighbors have been very fast-moving and dramatic in the past months. With so much happening, it’s been quite difficult to get an accurate picture of what’s really going on behind the headlines. Fortunately, the JCCNV/ NVHC Reston Active Adult group already had Bob Budoff scheduled to come and talk to us on August 26 and bring us up to date. Bob is a board member of the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Washington, founder and chair of the Temple B’nai Shalom Israel Committee, founder and leader of the “IsraelTalk” discussion group and a former vice president of the MidAtlantic Region of the Association of Reform Zionists of America. When this program initially was planned, it was intended to be an update on the status of Secretary of State Kerry’s “framework for peace” initiative, discussions of which were subsequently terminated. This was long before three Israeli teens were kidnapped and murdered, before a Palestinian teen was murdered, before rockets were being launched from Gaza into many parts of Israel, and before Operation Protective Edge began. This left Bob with a great deal of ground to cover! To put the events of the past few months in proper context, Bob first discussed Israel’s relationship with each of its neighbors, rivals and enemies, evaluating the particular challenges Israel faces and the likelihood of peace with each one, including Egypt, Syria, Jordan, ISIS, Lebanon, Hezbollah, Iran and Hamas. He then covered Kerry’s “framework for peace” initiative, its failure, and possible reasons for that outcome, as well

as the formation of the Palestine Authority/Hamas unity government and its ramifications. He also talked about the recent conflict in Gaza, analyzing Hamas’ goals and strategies, Israel’s response, and the consequences for Israel and the Palestinians, including possible future developments and options for resolving the conflict in Gaza, as well as the conflict with the Palestinians in general. Following Bob’s presentation, the participants posed excellent questions and engaged in a spirited discussion, reflecting their deep interest, passion, and high level of knowledge about Israel and the Middle East. People attending the program were gratified to have gained further insight into Israel’s overall situation and to express their views.

Programs Off to China and the Silk Road: A Travelogue Wednesday, November 5, 10:30am–noon (rescheduled from March) Presented by: Sandy Cohen, World Traveler What better way to experience a far-away place without getting on a plane than by joining experienced traveler Sandy Cohen for another one of his popular travelogues. Sandy and his wife Gail have documented their travels throughout the world. Our arrival destination will be the Xinjiang Autonomous Region in the far northwest of China on the Old Silk Road, an ancient international trade route between China and the Mediterranean. According to Sandy, this region is populated by Uighurs, a Muslim Turkic ethnic group. The Uighurs have frequently exhibited their unhappiness with domination by the Han Chinese, who have infiltrated the region and have threated the Uighur culture. The region is very scenic, ringed by picturesque mountains. Leave your passport at home, save some money and come join us for a wonderful trip abroad!

Footnote – Israeli Movie (2011, 107 mins, English subtitles) Wednesday, December 17, 10am–noon (note earlier start time) Film critic Roger Ebert wrote that the award-winning Israeli movie Footnote “is one of the smartest and most merciless comedies to come along in a while.” Footnote is the story of the rivalry between father and son Eliezer and Uriel Shkolnik, both eccentric professors who have dedicated their lives to their work in Talmudic study. Eliezer is a stubborn, unpopular scholar who is bitter that he has never been recognized for his lifetime of research. His son, Uriel, on the other hand is a popular, up-andcoming star in the academic world. The movie revolves around a misunderstanding that occurs when one of the men is awarded the Israel Prize, the most valuable honor for scholarship in the country. It is a story about an intense competition and the complicated relationship between a father and son. This film won the Best Screenplay Award at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for an Academy Award® in the category of Best Foreign Language Film in 2012. This will be our last program of the year, so be sure to join us. RSVP: By Friday, December 12 to Shelly.Rosenstein@jccnv.org, (703) 537-3062

Programs Chanukah Celebration with Belly Dancing at Nora Taste of Lebanon Restaurant Wednesday, December 17, 6pm–7:30pm Nora Taste of Lebanon Restaurant 14674 Lee Highway, Gainesville, VA Contact: Sheila.Budoff@jccnv.org, (703) 537-3068 It’s Chanukah — let’s party! We’re planning a really fun Chanukah celebration, complete with dinner, Chanukah candle lighting, Chanukah treats, and yes — belly dancing! Unconventional? A bit, perhaps, but dance is well-documented in the Torah, Mishnah and Talmud as an important ritual activity and expression of joy with no description of the way in which the dancers actually moved, so why not? We’ll have a professional belly dancer entertain us, but you’re most welcome to join in any time! Come help us rock Nora Taste of Lebanon Restaurant for Chanukah! Fee: $36 (includes dinner, tax and tip, belly dancing, and Chanukah treats) Code: #5586 RSVP: Send checks, payable to JCCNV with “12/17” in the memo line to Sheila Budoff, JCCNV, 8900 Little River Turnpike, Fairfax, VA 22031.
