Special Announcement

NV Rides The Adult Services Department is very excited to announce the launch of NV Rides, a program that will create a network of service providers to enhance and improve volunteer assisted transportation throughout the region. In partnership with Fairfax County and The Jewish Council for the Aging, the J is administering this community-wide initiative so that more non-driving older adults will be able to get where they need to go, and “age in place” for as long as possible. We know this project will be successful, and will serve as a model of practices for effective transportation solutions and meaningful volunteer engagement for other communities to follow. This is a special opportunity for the J to expand our reach within the wider community as we help older adults, Jewish and non-Jewish, have access to additional services in Northern Virginia. Jennifer Kanarek, will oversee the NV Rides program from the Adult Services Department. Jennifer recently transitioned into her role as NV Manager from the Community Engagement Department here at the J. She has an MSW in management and community practice, with a focus in gerontology and more than 15 years of experience in programming, marketing, public affairs and outreach for non-profit organizations. She is delighted to have the opportunity to launch this very important, and much needed program in our community.

Pictures That Satisfy: Irma Stern and Jewish Identity in South African Modern Art

Monday, January 12 9:45am‒11am Instructor: LaNitra M. Berger, Ph.D., Honors College, George Mason University Dr. Berger will discuss the life and work of GermanJewish South African artist Irma Stern (1894–1966) and her contributions to modern art in South Africa and beyond. Despite being virtually unknown outside of her native South Africa, Stern’s work is crucial to our understanding of modern art because she demonstrates how artists living outside of Western Europe addressed race, religion, and gender boundaries in different cultural contexts. Stern’s paintings of black South Africans were later labeled “degenerate” by the Nazis. After World War II, as South Africa searched for ways to reconnect culturally to Europe, Stern became known as South Africa’s most famous modern artist. Fee: $18/ $12 member Code: #5754

Azerbaijan: From 5th Century Jewish Migration to a Strong Modern-Day Partnership with Israel

Tuesdays, January 20–February 3 (3 weeks) 12:15pm–1:30pm Instructors: Diana Cohen Altman, Executive Director of the Karabakh Foundation; and Rauf Mammadov, MBA, head of US operations for the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) In 1992, within one year of Azerbaijan’s gaining independence from the former Soviet Union, Israel and Azerbaijan (a predominantly Muslim country bordering Iran and the former Soviet Union) established diplomatic relations, and the two countries began forging increasingly important strategic ties and alliances in trade, economic development and defense. For political reasons, those ties operated largely in the shadows for many years, but recently have become much more open and have grown even stronger. Azerbaijan has a centuries-old Jewish history, tracing back to the 5th century C.E., when the Persian Mountain Jews migrated to Azerbaijan. Due in part, perhaps, to this well-established Jewish presence, there is a very close relationship between Azerbaijan’s Jewish and Muslim communities, which is relatively rare in this hostile region. The first class will address the migration of the country’s ancient Mountain Jews, and community traditions and beliefs about their origins and affiliation. In addition, it will cover the later-arriving European professional community that exists mostly in the capital of Baku. The second class will emphasize Jewish

participation in Azerbaijan’s development over the past century. Jews played a role in the Azerbaijani Democratic Republic, the first parliamentary republic in the Muslim world, which was in place from 1918 until 1920, when Azerbaijan became part of the former Soviet Union. They also were instrumental in the growth of Azerbaijan’s oil technology and culture. The third class will cover the burgeoning investment opportunities and business partnerships between Israeli and Azerbaijani companies. Fee: $36/ $24 member Code: #5755

Special Author Event: Lincoln’s Lessons Learned with Jared Peatman, Ph.D., Author of The Long Shadow of Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address

Monday, January 26 9:45am–11am Instructor: Jared Peatman, Ph.D., Director of Curriculum at the Lincoln Leadership Institute at Gettysburg Abraham Lincoln’s brief (272-word) remarks at the formal dedication of the National Cemetery of Gettysburg In Pennsylvania on November 19, 1863 (later known as the “Gettysburg Address”), constituted one of the most important, powerful and influential speeches in American history. Although Lincoln stated that “[t]he world will little note, nor long remember” what was said there, that was most certainly not the case. The speech has a monumental legacy that is meaningful even today, over 150 years later. Jared Peatman has studied the long-ranging impact of the Gettysburg Address, winning several awards for his scholarly research and writings on the topic. He also leads leadership development seminars, helping organizational professionals in diverse fields apply the lessons of Gettysburg to present-day situations in management, human resources, conflict resolution, and more. Dr. Peatman will share with us some of Lincoln’s broad themes and how they still resonate today. Books will be available for sale and signing. Fee: $18/ $12 member Code: #5756

How This Night Is Different Part I: The Evolution of the Passover Haggadah

Tuesdays, February 10–17 (2 weeks) (make-up date Feb. 24) Noon–1:30pm Instructor: Gilah Goldsmith, J.D., retired government attorney and leader of Beth El Hebrew Congregation’s weekly Torah study group In any given year, more American Jews participate in a Passover seder (festive holiday meal) than any other Jewish ritual or observance. The haggadah is the manual for conducting the seder and recounting the story of the Exodus from Egypt. It contains a collection of prayers, songs, stories and biblical quotations, designed to enable each participant to experience the Exodus. More than 5,000 different versions of the haggadah have been published. We will explore what we can learn about the social, intellectual and religious life of the Jewish people from the many iterations of the haggadah. Fee: $24/ $16 member Code: #5757

Jews in the American Military: Field Trip to the National Museum of American Jewish Military History with Pre- and Post-Visit Presentations Mondays, February 23–March 9 (3 weeks) 9:45am–11am Instructors: Michael Rugel, Program and Content Coordinator, National Museum of American Jewish Military History (NMAJMH), and Lt. Colonel Sheldon A. Goldberg, Ph.D., NMAJMH Museum Historian Although they are only a small percentage of the American population, Jews have answered our nation’s call in a big way, proudly serving with distinction in all branches of the U.S. military. The National Museum of American Jewish Military History in Washington, D.C. commemorates the contributions and sacrifices made by Jewish men and women in the military. The museum had the grand opening of its first comprehensive permanent exhibit on Veterans Day, November 11, 2014. The exhibit examines the roles Jews have played in the American military from 1654 to the present. The instructors will lead a guided tour of the museum’s new exhibit.

At the first class meeting, an overview and orientation will be presented which will prepare the class for the museum visit. The field trip to the museum will take place on Monday, March 2, with bus pick-up at the J at 9am and a return time of approximately 1pm. There is no café at the museum, so please bring a bag lunch. At the class meeting following the trip, the instructors will lead a discussion of impressions, reflections and key takeaway points from the exhibit. Tuesdays, March 3–10 (2 weeks) (make−up date Mar. 17) Noon–1:30pm Instructor: Gilah Goldsmith, J.D., retired government attorney and leader of Beth El Hebrew Congregation’s weekly Torah study group This course, Part II of the “How This Night Is Different” course, focuses on the evolution of the Passover seder, the festive Passover holiday meal. Over more than 2,000 years, the ritual meal has evolved from an animal sacrifice at the Temple in Jerusalem to a communal meal. The seder has been repeatedly adapted to reflect the concerns of the Jewish people and their communities. We will examine how the seder has evolved, with emphasis on the historical context of that evolution and the concerns that continue to motivate it. Note: Part I of this course is not a prerequisite. Jews in Sports

Tuesdays, March 3–17 (3 weeks) 2pm–3:30pm Instructors: Don Budowsky, retired IT specialist and lifelong sports fan; George Solomon, Director, Shirley Povich Center for Sports Journalism, University of Maryland and former “Washington Post” sports editor; Philip Hochberg, J.D., sports lawyer representing professional and college sports leagues, conferences and teams, and former press box announcer for the Washington Senators, Washington Redskins and the University of Maryland football team The history of sports in America reflects our values, our culture, challenging social issues, and change. Don Budowsky will lead off this three-part course with an introduction and overview, covering the history of Jewish involvement in professional and amateur sports. In the second session, George Solomon, wellknown former sports editor for The Washington Post, will discuss Jews in sports media, such as Post icon Shirley Povich, who Richard Nixon once said was the only reason he read the Post. Finally, in the third session, Philip Hochberg, sports lawyer and a former, “Voice of the Senators,” will highlight several Jewish major league baseball players, a small but elite group that includes two MVP winners (Hank Greenberg and Al Rosen), and perhaps the greatest lefty pitcher of all time (Sandy Koufax). He’ll also talk about how baseball, our national pastime, helped immigrants lose their “greenhorn” status, and become “real” Americans. This is a unique opportunity to learn about Jews in sports from some all-star experts with lifelong careers in the sports industry. Fee: $36/ $24 member Code: #5760

The Phillips Collection – Neo-Impressionism and the Dream of Realities

Wednesday, January 7, depart the J 10:30am; return 3:15pm Contact: Michele.Endick@jccnv.org, 703.537.3095 “Neo-Impressionism and the Dream of Realities presents more than 70 works that reflect the Neo-Impressionist’s preoccupation with the idea, emotion, or the synergy of senses, particularly from 1888 to 1895, when adherence to the group was at its height and relations with Symbolist writers were especially fruitful. Featuring 15 artists — including renowned artists such as Georges Seurat, Paul Signac, and Camille Pissarro alongside their lesser known contemporaries — the exhibition welcomes to the Phillips works that have rarely or never before been exhibited in the United States. Wednesday, January 21, depart the J 10:30am; return 3:15pm Contact: Michele.Endick@jccnv.org, 703.537.3095 This trip will honor the memory of our dear friend Al Kaufman who volunteered at the museum and had led several tours for our group in the past. “[The] Museum sponsors onsite and traveling exhibitions, educational outreach, and Holocaust commemoration ... The Center for the Prevention of Genocide works to educate, engage, and inspire the public to learn more about past genocides. . . and to consider what [one] can do to prevent these atrocities in the future ... and [the Center] works to galvanize policy makers both in the US and around the world to create the tools and structures needed to avert the next crisis.” After touring the permanent exhibit, you will have time to view on your own the special exhibits including: Some Were Neighbors: Collaboration & Complicity in the Holocaust. This exhibit “addresses one of the central questions about the Holocaust: How was it possible? The central role of Hitler and other Nazi Party leaders is indisputable. Less well understood is these perpetrators’ dependence on countless others for the execution of Nazi racial policies. Within Nazi Germany and across Germandominated Europe, circles of collaboration and complicity rippled throughout governments and societies wherever victims of persecution and mass murder lived.” Relax and eat lunch in the adjacent kosher café – “on your own” and optional. Wednesday, February 18, depart the J 11:45am; return 2:30pm Contact: Michele.Endick@jccnv.org, 703.537.3095 It is very unusual for an artist to have a museum permanently dedicated to his work during his lifetime and then sharing it with other artists. Internationally known artist Phillip Ratner has successfully and wonderfully done just that. His fascinating museum features sculptures, paintings, tapestries and children’s books depicting characters and stories of the Hebrew Bible. The museum itself is a rarity, one of only a few in the world devoted to portraying biblical characters. Phillip Ratner is an internationally known artist whose works are on display at the US Supreme Court, the National Zoo, the Smithsonian, the Library of Congress, the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island (40 sculptures) and other locations around the world. The heart of this collection is a series of sculptures created by Phillip Ratner to convey the stories of such biblical characters as Noah, Jacob, Miriam, Cain and

February 6: The Known World by Edward P. Jones

Meatballs and Matzah Balls—the Best of Both Worlds! What do you get when you mix the best of Jewish and Italian cuisines? The JCCNV/Leesburg Area Active Adults found out just how out-of-this-world delicious that combination could be, thanks to Marcia Friedman, author of a fabulous cookbook entitled Meatballs and Matzah Balls: Recipes and Reflections from a Jewish and Italian Life. Raised Italian, but choosing to convert to Judaism when she married, Marcia Friedman embraced both cultures through her creative, mouth-watering recipes. Along with her recipes (including one for meatballs tucked inside matzah balls), the cookbook also includes personal stories about Marcia’s family, the inspiration for her recipes, the many ways in which Jewish and Italian cooking are similar, and the important role food plays in both cultures.

“Eager to escape life on her family’s farm, Alice Barrow moves to Lowell in 1832 and throws herself into the hard work demanded of ‘the mill girls.’ The hours are long and the conditions are bad, but Alice soon finds a true friend in Lovey Cornell, a saucy, strong-willed girl who is outspoken about the dangers they face in the factories . . . and about Alice opening her heart to a blossoming relationship with Samuel Fiske, the handsome and sympathetic son of the mill’s owner.” — Amazon.com

“The Known World tells the story of Henry Townsend, a black farmer and former slave who falls under the tutelage of William Robbins, the most powerful man in Manchester County, Virginia. Making certain he never circumvents the law, Townsend runs his affairs with unusual discipline. But when death takes him unexpectedly, his widow, Caldonia, can’t uphold the estate’s order, and chaos ensues. Jones has woven a footnote of history into an epic that takes an unflinching look at slavery in all its moral complexities” – Amazon.com

Creative Writing Group Writing Your Life Story

Mondays (monthly), January 12, February 9 11am–12:30pm, the J Coordinator: Carol Backman Contact: Pam.Wiener@jccnv.org, 703.537.3061 Write your life stories as a legacy for family and friends. If it’s important for you to tell your children, grandchildren, and friends who you are and what you did, this group will help you write, organize and selfpublish your life story as a legacy for those you value. Fee: $3/ Free J member No RSVP — Just come!

Marcia brought samples of two recipes from her cookbook — challah bread pudding with apples and mascarpone cheese and hummus with toasted garlic — for the group to try. Volunteers John Riley, Sharon Solomon and Helen Ganster prepared samples of additional dishes, including stuffed strawberries with chopped cashews; stuffed eggs with Parmesan, smoked salmon and dill; eggplant caponata; almond mandelbrot biscotti with white chocolate; and rich flourless brownies. Sound amazing? They were! We all did our part, tasting the various dishes, and going back for seconds, thirds, and possibly even more. Every dish was a flavorful delight and garnered rave reviews. We had a wonderful morning, enjoying Marcia’s warm, personal discussion about her book and her life, eating delicious food, enjoying each other’s company, and

PROGRAMS New Year, New You – Let’s Get Fit!

Dr. Kuland has been involved in the local community teaching aging adults how they can remain active using light calisthenics called “motos,” which can be done at any age and mobility level — in a chair, standing, or woven into an ordinary walk. Some of the motos take advantage of common objects such as chairs, walls, and counters. But most importantly, they promote clear thinking and can help ward off dementia. Suddenly his luck runs dry when he is arrested and thrown into the Mauthausen concentration camp. Presented by: Sheila Budoff, JCCNV Adult Group Coordinator Monday, January 19, 10:30am–noon Come in out of the cold, have some hot chocolate, and join us to be part of Loudoun County Public Library’s countywide reading program! The program “promotes community dialogue and understanding through the shared experience of reading and discussing the same book.” This year’s book is Out of My Mind by Sharon M. Draper. A professional educator and writer, Ms. Draper has been honored as National Teacher of the Year, is a five-time winner of the Coretta Scott King Literary Award, and a New York Times best-selling author. The book is about a very bright, spirited and determined 10-year-old girl, who is very much like other children her age, except that she is unable to speak due to a physical disability. There is much in the book for all ages to explore, discuss and learn from. Copies are available at all branches of the Loudoun County Public Library. Please read the book beforehand so you can participate in the discussion. All of Loudoun County is reading this book, so let’s get in on it, too! RSVP: Sheila.Budoff@jccnv.org, 703.537.3068

Russian Jews in Israel: A Force of Change

Monday, February 16, 10:30am–noon Presented by: Dana Kalishov, JCCNV-JAFI Community Shlicha As a nation of immigrants, Israel has absorbed several major waves of immigration, each with its own separate contributions to Israeli society. Most recently, in the 1990s, following the collapse of the Soviet Union, close to a million Russian Jews came to Israel, presenting many issues and challenges Israel has faced before,

but also distinguishing themselves in many ways from prior groups. Unlike earlier immigrants, the Russians largely have kept to themselves, living in their own communities, continuing to speak Russian, reading their own Russian newspapers and wielding significant influence on the Israeli political scene. The Russians have made their own mark on Israeli society, culturally, politically, economically and linguistically. They’ve even made their way into the annals of Israeli humor, with their own distinctive caricatures and ethnic jokes. Dana Kalishov will discuss and compare the recent Russian immigrants with several earlier groups and their impact on Israel. RSVP: Sheila.Budoff@jccnv.org, 703.537.3068

PROGRAMS Personal Health Care Records

Tuesday, January 27, 10:30am–noon Presented by: Marie Woodard, R.N., Thrive at Home Empower yourself! The Fairfax County Long Term Care Coordinating Council (LTCCC) is encouraging everyone to be proactive about their health by learning how to maintain a personal health care record (PHR). A PHR collects all your important medical information, such as medical history, current medications, surgeries, procedures and tests, in one place. It can be a paper record, online, or whatever method works best for you. Marie Woodard, a nurse with Thrive at Home and a member of the LTCCC, will teach us how to create and update a PHR. Please attend this very important session! Having a PHR could help save your life in the event of an emergency, prevent problems with medications, allergies and certain procedures, and save you money and time by preventing duplicate tests. Turning the Tide: The D-Day Landings of June 6, 1944

Tuesday, February 24, 10:30am–noon Presented by Jim Lewis, local historian The D-Day landings of June 6, 1944 were one of the most significant moments of the Second World War, and marked the point when the combined military force of the Western allies was finally fully brought to bear against Germany. The landings were the largest single-day amphibious assault in history; by the end of the day, 156,000 men had landed in Normandy. Support for the operation was also massive, including 11,590 aircraft making 14,674 sorties in a single day and 195,700 men manning nearly 6,000 ships of all sizes. Facing them was a supposedly impregnable sea wall of fortifications and the formidable German army. Mr. Lewis will discuss the incredible obstacles faced by “our boys” at this critical turning point of the war. RSVP: Sheila.Budoff@jccnv.org, 703.537.3068
