A NOTE FROM PAM

You will find our Annual Survey for adult program participants on page 25. By conducting this survey, we are fulfilling one of the requirements for applying for the grants that enable us to continue to provide quality programs and services throughout the year. Thank you in advance for taking the time to complete and return the questionnaire. I want to thank Rabbi Amy Perlin of Temple B’nai Shalom, for leading our Annual Passover Seder for Adults 50+, and Iren Fertel of Chabad Lubavitch of Northern Virginia, for leading the Passover Seder for our New American group. Both Seders were lovely events and meaningful experiences for everyone who attended. As always, our amazing staff has planned a plethora of programs and trips for the summer, including our annual boat trip and outing to the Castleton Festival. You will want to attend our special event on July 26 when we will view the much talked-about humorous and poignant film, The Age of Love, followed by a professionally-led discussion, a deli dinner and piano music played by our own Shelly Rosenstein. Details about these programs can be found in this issue of The Voice. There is still time to register for our first-ever summer camp for adults, Camp Kef. We are offering golf, gardening, and ceramic sessions. All sessions will be held offsite and taught by professionals (see page 11 for details).

The Age of Love (78 min.) You are Never Too Old to Love!

Dinner and a Movie, Sunday, July 26, 4pm Love is in the air at the J this summer as we sit back and enjoy the new and much talked-about documentary, The Age of Love. This charming movie follows the humorous and poignant adventures of 30 older adults in Rochester, NY, who sign up for a firstof-its-kind speed-dating event exclusively for 70- to 90-year-olds. Recently widowed, long divorced, or never married, we watch as they prepare for the big day, meet their possible dates, and then anxiously await the results. Through comic and bittersweet moments, they reveal intimate confessions of what it is like to still yearn to be seen and understood, and how much or how little their hearts have changed over a lifetime. From The Today Show to The Huffington Post, this documentary has sparked conversations among professionals, educational groups, and people world-wide. After the film, we will have a short, professionallyled discussion followed by a light deli dinner with special desserts. If time permits, the program will end with some classic love songs played by Shelly Rosenstein on the piano. Young or old, single or married, this is great way to spend a summer evening! Please check individual listings for Outreach site details. Fee: $22/ $18 J member (includes movie, post discussion and dinner). Code: #6683 RSVP: Submit payment, with “7/26” in memo line, and registration form to the J no later than July 17.

McCarthyism and the Red Scare

Tuesdays, October 13–27 (3 weeks) 10:15am–11:30am Instructor: David Heymsfeld, J.D., retired public policy consultant and professional staff (Chief Counsel, Staff Director) of the U.S. House of Representatives Transportation Committee After World War II, the Red Scare led to drastic measures against suspected Communists, including firing thousands of federal employees deemed insufficiently loyal, banning liberal books from libraries, blacklisting actors and screen writers, and firing teachers and professors whose patriotism became suspect. The consensus today is that many of these measures went far beyond what was needed. Many of those whose careers were destroyed were guilty, at worst, of poor political judgment during the 1930s and World War II when the Soviet Union was not an enemy. The unsupported accusations of Senator McCarthy were the most extreme of the excesses. The course will include consideration of major events of the Red Scare including the Hiss case, the Rosenberg case, the Oppenheimer case, and the Army-McCarthy hearings. In addition, the course will explore the roles of major political figures including Eisenhower, Nixon, McCarthy and J. Edgar Hoover as well as the impact of groups and institutions including the courts, the Congress, the media, unions, religious leaders, and anti-Communist liberals. Fee: $36/ $24 J member Code: #6686

The Pope and the Rabbi in Conversation

Tuesdays, October 13–November 3 (4 weeks) noon–1:30pm Instructor: John Rybicki, Biblical scholar and historian Before becoming Pope Francis I, Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio (former Archbishop of Argentina) and Argentine Rabbi Abraham Skorka were promoters of interreligious dialogue on faith and reason. They had many conversations on a variety of theological and worldly issues, including God, fundamentalism, atheism, abortion, homosexuality, euthanasia, samesex marriage, and globalization. These conversations were compiled into a book, entitled On Heaven and Earth. This class will explore the views of the Pope and Rabbi Skorka on several of these very timely issues. Fee: $48/ $32 J member Code: #6687

The 2015 Virginia Elections: Why They Matter

Mondays, October 19–26 (2 weeks) 10:15am–11:30am Instructors: Toni-Michelle Travis, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Government and Politics, George Mason University; Darcy Hirsh, Jewish Community Relations Council Director of Virginia Government and Community Relations Local elections matter — this will be a banner election year in the Commonwealth of Virginia! On November 3, the entire Virginia General Assembly (state legislature) will be up for re-election. Virginia is a critical swing state and a bellwether for the 2016 presidential election, so the rest of the nation will be watching the Virginia races closely. Also, the Virginia General Assembly passes laws on a variety of critical issues which have a large impact on us here in Northern Virginia. This course will cover the basics of Virginia government, including the General Assembly’s legislative authority and Virginia’s state constitutional guarantees of freedom of religion and separation of church and state. In addition, the curriculum will include discussion of several important issues which may be before the General Assembly in the next term, such as separation of church and state, funding for the Virginia-Israel Advisory Board (which helps Israeli companies grow their businesses in Virginia), immigration, voting rights, and Medicaid expansion. Come learn about the issues so you can make an informed decision when you vote. Fee: $24/ $16 J member Code: #6688

The Jews of Spain

Mondays, November 2–9 (2 weeks) 10:15am–11:30am Instructor: Jeffrey Gorsky, attorney, diplomat, author This course covers the dramatic one-thousandyear history of Jews in Spain, which is dramatically recounted in this instructor’s book, “Exiles in Sepharad.” Twenty percent of Jews today are descended from Sephardic Jews, who created significant works in religion, literature, science, and philosophy. They flourished under both Muslim and Christian rule, enjoying prosperity and power unsurpassed in Europe. Their cultural contributions include important poets; the great Jewish philosopher Moses Maimonides; and Moses de Leon, author of the Zohar, the core text of the Kabbalah. But these Jews also endured considerable hardship, culminating in the Spanish Inquisition, forced conversions, and expulsion from Spain. By the end of the fifteenth century, what had been the most populous and prosperous Jewish community in Europe ceased to exist on the Iberian Peninsula.

Comparing Jewish and Christian Existential Religious Philosophers: Martin Buber and Paul Tillich

Tuesdays, November 10–24 (3 weeks) noon–1:30pm Instructor: John Rybicki, Biblical scholar and historian Jewish and Christian religious philosophers of the same era use remarkably similar language and methodologies. In our own time, Martin Buber (1878-1965) and Paul Tillich (1886-1965) are perfect examples of thinkers who critically examined elements of their own traditions much as the ancient prophets did. This class will compare Buber’s and Tillich’s perspectives on topics such as the nature and attributes of God, how God is made known, creation, scripture, symbolism, and the relationship between God and humankind. Mondays, November 30–December 14 (3 weeks) 10:15am–11:30am Instructor: Linda Blair, Ph.D. in American Literature; retired Fairfax County high school English teacher; English Department Chair; and International Baccalaureate Diploma Program Coordinator Immigration, our shared cultural experience, permeates American literary studies most often emphasizing the conflicts surrounding the acculturation process with its associated tension and ambiguity. The retelling of similar experiences by ethnically diverse writers reiterates a fundamental fact about American literature in general: the expression of American cultural identity emerges from the process of becoming American by subsuming the immigrant self in terms of the cultural other. This course will examine three works about immigration in the early twentieth century. Two of these, Jews Without Money by Michael Gold and Call It Sleep by Henry Roth, explore Jewish life in the slums of the Lower East Side. In the third, 97 Orchard, Jane Ziegelman looks at the ethnicity of food and shared recipes as the delicious blending of the old country and the new world. Participants are encouraged to read the books prior to class, but it is not necessary in order to follow along and take part in the discussion. Instruction will be based on selected excerpts from the books, copies of which will be provided and read aloud in class. Fee: $36/ $24 J member Code: #6691

Special ALI Event! Taste of the Tenement

Monday, December 14, 11:45am–1:45pm Instructor: Susan Barocas, culinary writer and teacher; entertainment coach; founding director of the Jewish Food Experience The Lower East Side brought together an amazing mix of cultures and cuisines. Susan Barocas brings it to life through stories and anecdotes from her own family members and the foods of some of the families who lived at 97 Orchard Street between 1863 and 1935. In dark, cramped quarters that often served as their workplace as well as their living space, with little money, no cold food storage, and no running water, families learned to adapt their recipes from the “old country” to their limited circumstances and to the food available around them. Outside on the streets, pushcarts and restaurants offered some of the incredible variety of foods brought to the U.S. by the different immigrant groups. These new Americans learned and borrowed from each other while The Voice • jccnv.org • 703.323.0880 • Page 10

This year we will see a performance of Charles Gounod’s five-act opera Roméo et Juliette (Romeo and Juliet) which will be performed at the Castleton Festival Theatre with a full cast and chorus. As you explore this museum on your own, be certain to view the wonderful exhibit, Our Lives, which reveals how residents of eight Native communities live in the 21st century. Another interesting exhibit is Meet the Native Peoples of the Chesapeake Bay Region which tells about their lives through photographs, maps, and ceremonial and everyday objects. Then, try out some Native American lunch specialties in the Mitsitam (“Let’s Eat!”) Café, ranked one of the best museum cafés, or have your “usual” lunch. fight against segregation in the 1960s. The program began with the documentary “An Ordinary Hero,” a film about Joan’s courageous life as a white girl from the South. The audience was riveted by her story, which included how she participated in over three dozen sit-ins and protests by the age of 19, and was imprisoned in Mississippi’s notorious Parchman Penitentiary with other Freedom Riders. Joan was also involved in one of the most famous and violent sit-ins at the Jackson, Mississippi Woolworth lunch counter. She also helped to plan and organize the March on Washington in 1963. After a panel discussion featuring Joan, her son Loki (the film’s producer), author Michael O’Brien, and two Freedom Riders, Reverend Reginald Green and Dion Diamond, the emotional event concluded with everyone in the auditorium standing up, joining hands and singing “We Shall Overcome.” It was an extremely moving, thought-provoking and still relevant program that many people will long remember.

Workhouse Arts Center and a Stroll through Occoquan

Wednesday, August 12, depart Beth El 10:30pm; return 3pm The Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton is the perfect place to spend a summer morning. Built in 1910 and formerly a medium security prison, it not only housed short-term male prisoners, but once held more than 70 suffragettes demanding the right to vote. By the 1980s, overcrowding and disrepair had become major problems and it was closed after 80 years of operation. Fairfax County took over the land and in 2008 the prison was transformed into the Workhouse Arts Center. Now you can stroll through the campus and admire the many artists working on-site in their open studios. Enjoy the nine galleries full of beautiful ceramics, paintings, fiber art, etc. that you can not only admire, but also purchase. After you browse a bit, we will drive a short distance to the lovely town of Occoquan. Enjoy lunch and shopping on your own in this town full of charming little shops and restaurants. Monday, August 17, 10:30am–noon When Monika Hertwig was 11, she learned that her father, who had “died in the war,” was Amon Goeth, Nazi commandant of the Plaszow concentration camp (portrayed by actor Ralph Fiennes in Schindler’s List). Known as “the Butcher of Plaszow,” Goeth was convicted of war crimes and executed in 1946, when Hertwig was an infant. Throughout her life, Hertwig struggled with this knowledge and her “inheritance” from her father. After seeing Schindler’s List, Hertwig sought answers from Helen Jonas-Rosenzweig, who as a teen had been enslaved by Goeth as his personal servant. Inheritance is the deeply moving story, told by Academy award-winning director James Moll, of the meeting of these two women, both victims in their own right, and their efforts to confront the evil in their past so they could reclaim their future. A discussion of the film will follow. RSVP: Sheila.Budoff@jccnv.org, 703.537.3068
